Iran unleashes hundreds of missiles, drones in first direct attack on Israel

Iran has initiated an unprecedented attack on Israel, launching hundreds of drones and missiles in retaliation to an Israeli raid on the Iranian consulate in Syria two weeks ago.

The overnight escalation occurred amid Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of over 33,000 Palestinians and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory. Tensions have further heightened in the region, extending to confrontations with Lebanon and Syria, and prompting long-range attacks on Israeli targets from as far as Yemen and Iraq.

According to the Israeli military, the Iranian onslaught included more than 300 “killer drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles,” with 99 percent intercepted with assistance from France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The launches, originating from Iran, Iraq, and Yemen, triggered air raid sirens across Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, with the sound of explosions echoing as air defenses thwarted incoming projectiles.

Medics said a girl in southern Israel was wounded by shrapnel from an intercepted drone, while the military said “a small number of hits were identified, including at [an Israeli military] base in southern Israel, where minor damage was caused to infrastructure”.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack, stating that it launched the drones and missiles as part of Operation True Promise in retaliation for what they termed “the Zionist entity’s crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Syria” on April.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the attack, stating it launched the drones and missiles under Operation True Promise in retaliation for what they termed “the Zionist entity’s crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Syria” on April 1. The raid in Damascus resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including two senior generals in the IRGC’s elite Quds Force.

Following the missile and drone attack, Iran’s mission to the United Nations declared the matter “concluded” and issued a warning to Israel of a “considerably more severe” response should the “Israeli regime make another mistake.” Additionally, it cautioned the US to refrain from involvement in the conflict.

Concerns regarding a broader escalation arose. Prior to the Iranian attack, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon announced temporary closures of their airspace. Syria also heightened alert levels around Damascus and major bases, deploying Russian-made Pantsir ground-to-air defense systems, according to Reuters.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian armed forces seized a container ship linked to Israel near the Strait of Hormuz.

Western nations, including the US, the UK, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Norway, condemned Iran’s missile and drone assault. Egypt and Saudi Arabia called for restraint, while the UN Security Council scheduled an emergency session to address the issue at Israel’s request.

US President Joe Biden shortened a weekend stay at his Delaware beach house to convene with his national security team at the White House on Saturday afternoon. He also held a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reaffirming Washington’s “ironclad commitment” to Israel’s security.

Biden stated he informed Netanyahu that “Israel demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks,” sending a clear message to adversaries that they cannot effectively threaten Israel’s security.

Netanyahu, in a brief post, asserted Israel’s determination to achieve victory.

We intercepted, we repelled, together we shall win,” he added.

The Pentagon meanwhile reported that defence chief Lloyd Austin had spoken with his Israeli counterpart “to discuss urgent regional threats … and made clear that Israel could count on full US support to defend Israel against any attacks by Iran and its regional proxies”.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned Iran’s attack, saying he was “deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation”.

Russian Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy said on the Telegram social media app that in addition to a letter from Israel, the UNSC had received one from Iran asserting its attack was within the UN Charter framework governing the right to self-defence.

“The latter warns that if Israel responds, Iran will respond in a more powerful and decisive manner,” Polyanskiy said.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on all parties to “exercise calm and restraint”, describing the situation as the “latest spillover of the Gaza conflict”. It said it was deeply concerned by the escalation and said Israel’s war on Gaza “must end now”.

Analysts described Iran’s attack on Israel as carefully calibrated to prevent further escalation.

“What the Iranians are trying to do is to come up with a measured, calculated attack in order to regain deterrence and not to be seen as weak in front of their own proxies,” said Hassan Barari, professor of international relations at the University of Qatar.

However, he expressed worry that the attack could worsen the situation in Gaza.

“I know some right-wing politicians in the government will see this as an opportunity because the world’s attention has shifted onto Iran-Israel and then they can do something probably horrendous in Gaza,” he said.

Ethiopian authorities repatriates 70,000 stranded migrants from Saudi Arabia

On Friday, Ethiopian authorities initiated the repatriation of stranded migrants from the oil-rich kingdom of Saudi Arabia, facilitating the return of 842 individuals through flights.

The objective of the third phase of this program is to repatriate 70,000 people within four months, achieved through the operation of 12 flights per week.

According to the government, the migrants faced dire circumstances, with many being undocumented and enduring incarceration in prisons and detention centers within Saudi Arabia.

However, there remains a significant risk of these individuals returning to Saudi Arabia, given the annual migration of thousands seeking improved living conditions.

Earlier this week, Ethiopian officials reported the tragic loss of 38 migrants, including children, in a shipwreck off the coast of Djibouti, prompting speculation that they may have been en route to Saudi Arabia.

Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia hosts approximately 750,000 Ethiopian migrants, with more than half believed to have entered the country unlawfully.

Jackie Chan addresses concerns over appearance in recent photos

Renowned actor Jackie Chan has reassured his fans following concerns raised about his looks in photographs released earlier this year.

The stuntman, famous for his roles in movies such as Police Story, Rush Hour, and Who Am I?, was photographed with graying hair, sparking speculation about his well-being among fans.

Chan has now addressed these concerns on social media, marking his 70th birthday this week by sharing a series of photos reflecting on his career.

He explained that his aged appearance earlier in the year was actually for a character in an upcoming film.

Addressing his 6.2 million Instagram followers, the star stated, “Recently, many friends saw some new pictures of me online and expressed concerns about my health. I want to assure everyone, there’s no need to worry! It’s simply a character appearance for my latest movie. The role requires me to have white hair, a white beard, and an elderly look.”

“Throughout my career, I’ve always been open to trying new things for a film, whether it’s a challenging stunt or a transformative appearance for a character,” he added.

Chan gained fame starring in over 30 martial arts films in Hong Kong before achieving global recognition with Rumble In The Bronx in 1995.

He subsequently appeared in numerous Hollywood blockbusters, including the Rush Hour trilogy, Shanghai Noon and its sequel Shanghai Knights with Owen Wilson, Around The World In 80 Days, and the Kung Fu Panda series alongside Jack Black.

Although he did not specify which movie required the aging appearance, Chan currently has multiple films in production, including reprising his role as Mr. Han in the upcoming Karate Kid sequel alongside Ralph Macchio, the star of the original 1984 film.

Reflecting on his 62 years in the entertainment industry, Chan expressed gratitude for every moment and contemplated turning 70, remarking, “Am I really 70 years old? After the initial shock, I’m reminded of a saying from my dear friend Sammo Hung: ‘Growing old is a blessing.’ Especially for us stunt performers, we often overlook the blessing of growing old.”

He said there was “nothing that we are aware of at the scene that would indicate any motive or any ideology.” When asked whether officials were ruling out terrorism, he said: “We’re not ruling anything out.”

  • Man from Palestine killed amid search for missing teenager in West Bank village

Man from Palestine killed amid search for missing teenager in West Bank village

One Palestinian killed and 25 injured in West Bank clash amid Israeli search for missing teen

Amid an Israeli search for a missing teenager, a Palestinian man has been killed and 25 others injured in clashes as dozens of Jewish settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli troops intervened as settlers armed with guns and stones entered al-Mughayyir village.

It remains unclear whether the deceased, 26-year-old Jehad Abu Alia, was shot by an armed settler or an Israeli soldier.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that at least eight people were hit by live fire.

Meanwhile, 14-year-old Benjamin Ahimeir, who went missing, has not yet been found, prompting a large-scale search effort.

Local media sources have indicated that the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s disappearance remain unclear, and the military has not confirmed if the incident is related to terrorism. Military personnel have established roadblocks in the vicinity.

According to Israeli media reports, Benjamin Achimeir left the “Gal Farm” in the Malachei Shalom settler outpost early on Friday and has not been seen since.

He was grazing sheep at the time, and the sheep returned to the farm without him, according to police. His sister Hannah, as quoted by AFP news agency, mentioned that he was familiar with the area.

In a separate incident, Israeli forces fatally shot two Palestinians in the West Bank.

One of them, identified by Hamas as a local commander of the group, was reportedly killed in a shoot-out with Israeli troops, according to the Israeli military.

Videos posted on X by the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din depict scenes of unrest in al-Mughayyir, with dark smoke rising from burning vehicles near an olive orchard and the sound of gunshots in the background. Social media images also show a group of masked settlers gathered in the area.

Afif Abu Alia, the father of Jehad Abu Alia, the 26-year-old who was fatally shot, spoke from a hospital in Ramallah, expressing sorrow over his son’s death. “My son went with others to defend our land and honor, and this is what happened,” he said.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claim that their troops, not settlers, fired at Palestinians who were throwing stones as “violent disturbances erupted at several points in the area.” The IDF reported that they successfully removed the settlers who had entered the village.

“The violent riots have been dispersed, and there are no Israeli civilians present within the town at this moment,” the IDF stated.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa has condemned the attack.

Foreign governments, including Israel’s closest ally, the US, have expressed concerns about the surge in settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank since Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza began.

Israel has constructed approximately 160 settlements housing around 700,000 Jews since occupying the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war. While the vast majority of the international community considers these settlements illegal under international law, Israel and the US dispute this.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 460 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since October 7th. Israeli sources report at least 13 Israelis killed by Palestinians in the same period.

The recent escalation of violence in the West Bank has led the US, UK, and France to impose sanctions on some settlers for the first time.

However, the casualties in the West Bank are overshadowed by the death toll in the Gaza war, with over 33,600 Gazans, mostly civilians, killed during Israel’s campaign, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

On October 7th, gunmen also took more than 250 people hostage. Israel reports that at least 34 hostages are confirmed dead out of the 130 still held in Gaza.

This latest violence occurs as Israel remains on high alert following US warnings of a potential Iranian strike against Israel. Iran has vowed retaliation for a deadly airstrike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria, in which several senior Iranian military figures were killed. While Israel has not officially commented, it is widely believed to have carried out the attack targeting the elite Quds Force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Bobrisky to serve 6-month jail term in male prison

One of Nigeria’s well-known celebrities, Bobrisky, has been sentenced to six months in jail for “spraying” naira banknotes at a movie premiere.

The judge ruled that Bobrisky, who per reports, is a trans woman, must serve his sentence in a male prison, with no option for paying a fine instead, according to local media reports. This is after Bobrisky identified as a male in court, reports say.

Throwing money in the air as a gesture of appreciation is common at Nigerian weddings and celebrations. However, it’s technically considered an offense as the banknotes can fall to the ground and be stepped on.

Rights groups highlight that LGBTQ individuals often encounter harassment and discrimination in Nigeria.

In a similar incident, cisgender, heterosexual actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin received a comparable sentence for the same offense in February.

During the trial, Bobrisky mentioned she wasn’t aware of the ban. Prosecutions for this action have been rare until now.

I dare you to make prove of accusations against Nacee – Charterhouse to Brother Sammy

The organization overseeing the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), Charterhouse, has issued a firm challenge to gospel singer Brother Sammy, urging him to provide evidence to support recent accusations he leveled against fellow artist Nacee and the TGMA board.

In a prior interview, Brother Sammy alleged that Nacee’s involvement on the nomination board resulted in his exclusion from award nominations, implying bias against him and even suggesting that he would only be considered if Nacee were no longer alive.

In response to these allegations during a live interview on Hitz FM, Charterhouse’s Public Relations Officer, Robert Klah, countered Brother Sammy’s claims.

Klah clarified, “With respect to the board, I can confidently say that Nacee is not part of it. The Bible commands us to tell the truth. And Brother Sammy is a gospel musician, which means that he should be aligned with the tenets of the Bible.”

Issuing a direct challenge to Brother Sammy, Klah dared him to present any evidence substantiating Nacee’s connection with the board, advising him to refrain from disseminating misinformation.

“I dare him to prove, to submit any form of evidence that clearly shows that Nacee is on the board because this doesn’t sit well with us,” Klah emphasized. “And it’s inappropriate for him to say that. If you suspect it, that doesn’t mean that it is.”

Klah reassured that all artists’ submissions, including Brother Sammy’s, would undergo fair assessment for award nominations if presented in accordance with the guidelines.

“If he submits his work just like any other person, at the end of the day, it will be reviewed,” Klah explained. “And once it is reviewed and there is any merit to it in any of the categories, it will be certainly put in there.”

He wrapped up by urging everyone to prioritize truthfulness and steer clear of potential legal consequences arising from unfounded accusations.

Shatta Wale’s manager supports him for verbally assaulting Stonebwoy

Sammy Flex, the manager of Dancehall sensation Shatta Wale, has defended his artist’s recent verbal altercation with Stonebwoy, citing the ongoing rivalry between the two stars.

Addressing the backlash surrounding Shatta Wale’s remarks about Stonebwoy’s disability, Sammy Flex shrugged off the issue as typical banter within their competitive industry.

He highlighted Stonebwoy’s past jibes at Shatta Wale during album launches as evidence that such verbal spats are par for the course between the two.

Sammy Flex clarified that Shatta Wale’s outburst was triggered by Stonebwoy’s absence at an event where they were both slated to perform together, alleging that Stonebwoy declined to share the stage with Shatta Wale.

According to Sammy Flex, these exchanges are merely part of the game played by both artists and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Fire destroys late Krachi East MCE’s office

A fire erupted on Thursday night, causing significant damage to essential documents and assets at the office formerly occupied by the late Krachi East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in Dambai.

Although the cause of the fire is currently unknown, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has initiated an investigation into the incident.

Mr. Bernard Aborkugya Mensah, who served as the MCE of Krachi East Municipality, passed away on April 5th of this year, having held the position for just one year.

Appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to succeed the late MCE, Francis Kofi Okesu, who passed away in September 2022, the deceased’s tenure was brief.

Assistant Divisional Officer 1 (ADO1), Stephen Agortor of the Dambai Fire Command, confirmed the occurrence to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He stated that at approximately 10:00 PM last night, a passerby alerted the Service to the situation.

The Information Ministry reports that there have been no updates from the police regarding the investigations.

In a statement released by the Information Ministry on April 5th, the government, represented by the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Interior, and the Greater Accra Coordinating Council, affirmed its dedication to probing the issue and deciding on the necessary steps forward.

We will deal with the police traditionally if anything happens to Naa Okromo – Nungua Traditional Authority

The Nungua Traditional Authority has delivered a firm caution to the Ghana Police Service concerning Naa Okromo, the 12-year-old girl purportedly wedded to the Gborbu Wulomo, a 63-year-old priest.

In an urgent assembly convened to address the ongoing protective care of the girl, the traditional authority asserted Naa Okromo’s status as their queen.

Reports have surfaced indicating the girl’s pivotal role in the forthcoming Homowo Festival, prompting apprehensions among traditional leaders regarding her incapacity to fulfill her responsibilities while under protective custody.

In an interview with JoyNews, Rev D.N Gyasi Ankrah, the Director of Administration at the Office of the Gborbu Wulomo, emphasized that the police would bear accountability if any harm befalls Naa Okromo.

“This young lady who is our queen is under police protection. Therefore if the police have remarked that she is under police protection, where again do you want to find her? We are telling the world that she is our royal and if the police are saying they are taking care of her, then the police must be reminded that whatever happens to her, traditionally, we will deal with the police.

“If Gborbu has, through divine intervention taken our lady who is our queen, then it is the deity who has something to do with the queen, not Gborbu Wulomo as a person like people are speculating,” he said.

The statement highlighted that the Ministry of Gender has implemented essential measures to guarantee the safety of the child concerned.

“The child has been taken by the Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to a place of safety. She is doing well and has been visited by the Minister Designate and other officials from the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

“The Social Welfare Department under the Gender Ministry has made available counseling and other resources including the provision of a medical doctor and two caregivers to ensure the wellbeing of the child. One case worker has been assigned to the case to, among other things, ensure that all protocols regarding the maximum protection of the child are strictly adhered to,” part of the statement read.

“Those days, those our actors were good, these days things have changed even the journalists have changed, we’ve become celebrities,” Avle remarked during the show. “Things are not the same anymore. Those days, those who were in the journalism profession, they were professionals, they were even working at other places and they were doing part-time. Of course, you can’t do part-time anymore, and media people were role models. We need purity; we need to accept that things have changed.

We need to have some puritans in the media, people who will have to stick to what they have to do and do it “.

Avle underscored the significance of preserving journalistic integrity despite the temptation of fame and the allure of social media metrics.

“A young journalist now, the thing they are now being told about what the profession needs, influencers, and all those things. Fitch Solutions forecasts Ghana’s economy to recover by 3.5% in 2024

Fitch Solutions projects a strong recovery for Ghana’s economy in its April 2024 Sub-Saharan Africa Macroeconomic Update, following two challenging years.

While the World Bank forecasts a 2.9% growth rate, the UK-based firm predicts a more optimistic 3.5% expansion for Ghana in 2024.

Senior Country Risk Analyst at Fitch Solutions, Mike Kruiniger, observed that signs of economic revival are emerging, attributing the rebound to increased consumer spending driven by easing inflation.

He highlighted the growth experienced in the final quarter of 2023, fueled by improvements in the agriculture sector and heightened services activity.

Looking ahead to 2024, Kruiniger expects continued growth, although still below pre-pandemic levels. He emphasized the potential impact of the election year on government spending, anticipating increased efforts to improve public welfare before the December 2024 polls.

Despite the Bank of Ghana’s initiation of a monetary easing cycle with a 100 basis points rate cut in January 2024, followed by a rate hold in March 2024, Kruiniger suggested that further interest rate cuts could be on the horizon to stimulate economic activity. However, he cautioned that subdued credit uptake might lead businesses to temporarily postpone expansion plans.

GNPC to face collapse after 2026 in the absence of govt aid – PIAC cautions

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has cautioned that the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) could encounter financial difficulties after 2026 if it loses government backing, as required by the Petroleum Revenue Management Act (PRMA).

The PRMA specifies that GNPC will cease to receive funding from the Petroleum Holding Fund (PHF) after 15 years from the commencement of commercial oil production.

PIAC stressed the necessity for GNPC to achieve financial independence, urging the government to avoid imposing further financial strains on the corporation.

In its report titled “The Role of GNPC in the Upstream Petroleum Industry: Challenges and Prospects,” PIAC suggested that GNPC collaborate with various stakeholders to align expectations and secure support. Additionally, it recommended revising GNPC’s strategy to adapt to the post-2026 financial landscape.

PIAC underscored GNPC’s substantial financial obligations, which include guarantees and receivables amounting to $1.14 billion as of 2022. These commitments involve payments made on behalf of the government, state-owned enterprises, and outstanding debts linked to infrastructure projects and gas supply to the Ghana National Gas Limited Company.

Furthermore, PIAC voiced concerns arising from public feedback regarding apprehensions about political interference in GNPC’s activities, resulting in quasi-fiscal spending and advances to other government entities.

The Ghana International Trade and Finance Conference (GITFiC) has initiated extensive stakeholder consultations on its innovative project theme, “A Call for a Global Debt Initiative.”

During a joint press conference at the World Bank office in Accra, supported by the World Bank and the European Union, two research papers were unveiled to the public. These papers, titled “Unravelling the Global Central Banks’ Losses (Africa and Europe)” and “Global Debt to GDP Post Covid-19 (Sub-Saharan Africa),” were presented in November 2023.

According to a press release, the Position Paper for the Global Debt Initiative garnered responses from key global stakeholders, including the African Development Bank and the United Nations.

In a response dated January 30, 2024, signed by the Chief Economist and Vice President of the African Development Bank, GITFiC’s proactive approach to finding lasting solutions in collaboration with stakeholders was commended.

Similarly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, in a letter dated April 3, 2024, lauded GITFiC’s efforts to mobilize stakeholders in Ghana, across Africa, and beyond to identify and advocate for innovative solutions to global debt challenges.

The statement also highlighted discussions with officials from Fitch Ratings, Ghana’s public debt head, and the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ghana on the importance of cooperation and inclusivity in addressing global debt issues.

Ethiopia govt to launch national sex offender register in 2025

Ethiopia is gearing up to launch its inaugural sexual violence registration system, slated to commence operations next year, as announced by the government.

The system’s primary objective is to combat and address sexual violence against women and children, aiming to address a significant challenge in a nation where prosecuting gender-based violence remains problematic.

Statistics from a 2016 survey reveal that 23% of Ethiopian women have encountered physical violence, with 10% experiencing sexual violence.

However, due to underreporting, the actual figures are likely higher.

The forthcoming system seeks to hold perpetrators of sexual offenses accountable even after serving their sentences.

Once operational, it will prohibit registered sex offenders from employment in schools, orphanages, and other child-centric institutions, according to Seleshi Tadesse, the women’s rights and protection executive at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, as reported by BBC News Amharic.

With an allocated budget of approximately 10 million birr ($176,000; £140,000) sourced from various institutions, the national sex offense crime registry is envisioned to comprise three categories of pages, including a public page.

Cheddar explains why he chose Ashanti Region for his ‘sea to Kumasi’ promise

Presidential hopeful and leader of The New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, has explained why he promised to extend the sea from Ghana’s coast to the landlocked Ashanti Region.

Affectionately known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar, the business magnate sees dredging sea in Kumasi as a crucial step towards unlocking the potential of Ghana’s Eastern and Western Corridors to boost international trade.

But for the reason he specifically choose Kumasi, Cheddar said, “first of all I choose Kumasi because the Ashanti Region is the only region that has the best of sensitivity in terms of the issue of water dredging and water transportation.”

Bediako outlined his strategy, inspired by his observations of other nations extending maritime transport routes into inland areas.

He highlighted Dubai’s transformation from a desert to a coastal city as a prime example of what could be accomplished.

“Why are we still transporting individual containers by road when the sea could offer a faster and more efficient means?” Bediako questioned.

He highlighted the current system’s inefficiencies, where goods transported by road often arrive damaged or spoiled after the six-hour journey from Tema Harbour to Kumasi.

“I want to open up the East and Western Corridor infrastructure,” Bediako emphasized.

“I want to build power stations, energy stations, connect the gas, create industries, and bring technology.”

Ghana’s tourism sector appeals to finance ministry for tax relief to foster growth

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, together with the Ghana Tourism Authority, is pushing for tax relief for businesses in the tourism industry, with the goal of increasing its contribution to the country’s GDP.

They have proposed a plan to the Ministry of Finance, asking for a flat tax rate system to help support the sector’s growth.

At the Public-Private Partnership Forum in Koforidua during the first quarter of 2024, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyemang, talked about how the tourism industry has stayed strong despite challenges. He mentioned a significant increase in both local and international tourism.

Mr. Agyemang stressed the importance of the government dealing with the burden of multiple taxes and fees. He presented a plan to the Ministry of Finance to consider during the mid-year budget review.

“We have seen some resilience and growth, and we have seen that we are making some strides, but we cannot do it all alone, and we need the issue of the multiplicity of levies and taxes paid to various agencies to be addressed. So, we have presented a paper to the Ministry of Finance, and we are hoping that those taxes and levies will be addressed in the Mid-year Budget,” he said in an interview with Citi News.

South African electoral authority contests decision permitting Zuma’s candidacy

The South African Electoral Commission has taken its case to the country’s Constitutional Court following a recent decision by judges to overturn a ban preventing former President Jacob Zuma from running in the upcoming election.

The commission had initially disqualified Zuma’s candidacy, citing constitutional provisions that prohibit individuals sentenced to more than 12 months in prison from holding public office.

Zuma had received a 15-month sentence for contempt of court in 2021, though he served only three months behind bars.

However, earlier this week, South Africa’s electoral court overturned the ban without providing detailed reasoning for its decision.

In response, the Electoral Commission has sought legal clarification from the nation’s highest court on this matter. Officials emphasized the significant public interest in obtaining clear guidance on the interpretation of relevant laws.

The appeal to the Constitutional Court underscores the importance of resolving this issue to ensure transparency and adherence to constitutional principles ahead of the upcoming election.

Probe begins as Liberian ex-president George Weah’s asset papers leaks without his consent

Liberia’s House of Representatives Launches Probe into Leak of Former President George Weah’s Asset Declaration Documents

In a recent development, Liberia’s House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the unauthorized release of former President George Weah’s asset declaration papers to the public.

As per the country’s regulations, all high-ranking government officials, including presidents, are required to disclose their assets to the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) upon assuming office.

This measure aims to prevent conflicts of interest and the accumulation of illicit wealth among public officials. However, it is not obligatory for these declarations to be made public.

The alleged leakage of the former president’s asset declaration documents to the public has raised concerns, as it is claimed to have occurred without his consent.

“Weah’s asset declaration form is now all in the public space and on various platforms,” Frank Saah Foko, a local legislator, said.

He stated that publishing the former president’s declared assets without his permission was against the law.

The source of the leak remains unclear, but lawmakers have called upon senior officials from the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) to provide explanations regarding the breach. They are scheduled to appear before the legislators on Tuesday.

In February, President Joseph Boakai, who emerged victorious in the November presidential run-off election, defeating Mr. Weah, publicly disclosed his assets, pledging to combat corruption within the nation.

During Mr. Weah’s presidency, accusations of corruption were rampant, and his administration faced criticism for the misconduct of senior officials.

Following Mr. Boakai’s inauguration in January, he urged former officials to promptly return any government assets they possessed “without hesitation or delay.”

Mali political parties, civil society defy Junta’s ban on activities

Several political parties and civil society organizations in Mali have rejected the ruling junta’s decision to halt political activities and have vowed to organize protests against it.

Ismael Sacko, the president of the African Social Democratic Party (PSDA), criticized the junta’s action, calling it illegal and a violation of Mali’s constitution. He promised to lead demonstrations against the decision.

The coordinator of the 20 February Appeal to Save Mali coalition also condemned the ruling and urged people to resist it through civil means.

Meanwhile, Mali’s press watchdog, the House of the Press of Mali, expressed worry over the country’s media regulator’s directive to prohibit media outlets from covering political parties’ activities. It called on media organizations to defy this order.

The High Authority of Communication (HAC) instructed media outlets to cease reporting on political parties’ and associations’ activities. This came a day after authorities issued a decree suspending all political parties’ and groups’ activities until further notice, citing the need to maintain public order.

Since assuming power in 2020, the junta has progressively restricted critical reporting on Mali’s political transition and security situation.

Recently, over 80 political parties and civil groups demanded presidential elections “as soon as possible” and the end of military rule following the expiration of the extended transition period last month.

GCB Capital predicts 1.0% inflation decline in April 2024

A Research Group, known as GCB Capital predicts that inflation will go down again in April 2024 after going up in March, which was the highest in four months.

The group indicates that inflation will drop by 1.0% in April 2024, but it will still be higher than it was in February 2024. They say this drop is mainly because of lower food prices.

In March 2024, inflation went up to 25.8%, which was a big increase. GCB Capital thinks this increase is temporary, but there are still risks that inflation could go up more, especially because of higher petrol prices and possible increases in transport fares.

They also say that if the price of Brent crude oil goes up to $100 per barrel, it could make petrol prices go up too, which would increase inflation.

Additionally, because there is not enough foreign money coming into the country and the local currency is losing value, this could also make inflation go up in the future.

Singapore Scandal: $2bn laundering case that shook the nation

A Singaporean court has commenced the sentencing phase in a high-profile case involving 10 Chinese nationals accused of laundering $2.2 billion (£1.8 billion) obtained from criminal endeavors abroad.

This scandal implicated several banks, property agents, precious metal traders, and a prestigious golf club, triggering extensive raids in affluent neighborhoods. Authorities seized billions in cash and assets, including 152 properties, 62 vehicles, luxury bags and watches, jewelry, and thousands of bottles of alcohol.

Recently, Su Wenqiang and Su Haijin became the first to receive sentences in the case. Su Haijin attempted to evade arrest by leaping from a second-floor balcony. Both individuals will serve slightly over a year in prison before deportation and a ban from reentering Singapore. The fate of the remaining eight defendants is pending.

Despite nearing its conclusion, this case, the largest of its kind in Singapore, prompts crucial inquiries. Prosecutors assert that the funds sustaining the defendants’ lavish lifestyles originated from illicit activities overseas, such as scams and online gambling. The ability of these individuals, some with multiple passports from various countries, to reside and conduct banking operations in Singapore for extended periods without detection has sparked scrutiny. Consequently, policies are under review, particularly regarding clients holding multiple passports, with banks tightening regulations.

Above all, this case underscores Singapore’s challenge in attracting the ultra-wealthy while preventing the inflow of illicit wealth.

    Show me the money

Often hailed as the “Switzerland of Asia,” Singapore embarked on a campaign to attract banks and wealth managers in the 1990s. The dividends of economic reforms in China and India, coupled with a stable Indonesia in the 2000s, propelled Singapore into a haven for foreign enterprises. Offering investor-friendly legislation, tax breaks, and other inducements, the city-state swiftly became a magnet for international businesses.

Today, the ultra-wealthy can jet into Singapore via its private terminal, indulge in opulent waterfront districts, and engage in speculation at the world’s premier diamond trading exchange. Adjacent to the airport lies Le Freeport, a high-security vault offering tax-exempt storage for fine art, gems, wine, and other treasures, often likened to Asia’s Fort Knox due to its $100 million facility.

According to Singapore’s market regulator, the country’s asset managers attracted S$435 billion from overseas in 2022, nearly doubling the 2017 figure. More than half of Asia’s family offices, which oversee private wealth, are now based in Singapore, as reported by consulting firm KPMG and family office consultancy Agreus. Among them are offices linked to luminaries like Google co-founder Sergey Brin, British tycoon James Dyson, and Chinese-Singaporean entrepreneur Shu Ping, head of the world’s largest chain of hotpot restaurants, Haidilao.

Authorities suspect that some of the individuals implicated in the money laundering case may have ties to family offices that received tax incentives.

“There is an inherent contradiction for a place like Singapore, which prides itself on clean and good governance but also wants to accommodate the management of massive wealth by offering advantages such as low taxes and banking secrecy,” says Chong Ja-Ian, a non-resident scholar at Carnegie China.

“The risk of also becoming a banker for individuals who earned their money through nefarious or illicit means grows.”

Analysts warn that Singapore’s appeal to the ultra-wealthy isn’t without its risks. For affluent Chinese individuals, Singapore stands out as a preferred destination due to its renowned governance, stability, and cultural ties to China. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the influx of Chinese capital into Singapore.

One of the ten suspects implicated in this case had been sought by Chinese authorities since 2017 for his alleged involvement in illegal online gambling. Prosecutors assert that he chose Singapore as his refuge because he sought a secure haven away from Chinese law enforcement.

    Hiding in plain sight

Singaporean banks have found themselves embroiled in yet another financial scandal, echoing previous incidents like their involvement in the infamous 1MDB debacle, where billions were siphoned from Malaysia’s state investment fund through cross-border laundering schemes. Additionally, Singapore has been a nexus for individuals with dubious financial ties, exemplified by the arrest of Dan Tan in 2013, once labeled by Interpol as the head of the world’s most notorious match-fixing syndicate.

Despite Singapore’s stringent regulations targeting white-collar crimes and its active participation in global initiatives like the Financial Action Task Force aimed at combatting money laundering and terrorist financing, loopholes persist. While banks have invested significantly in bolstering compliance measures, such as stringent customer screening and advocating for stringent reporting protocols, detecting suspicious activities remains a formidable challenge.

Josephine Teo, Singapore’s second minister for home affairs, acknowledged the complexity of identifying illicit transactions amid a deluge of high-value financial dealings, likening it to searching for “one needle in several haystacks.”

Notably, Singapore’s thriving property market has emerged as an attractive avenue for laundering illicit funds, according to experts. Moreover, the allure of casinos, nightclubs, and luxury retailers provides additional avenues for criminals to launder money.

Kelvin Law, an accounting professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, underscored the vast sums of money coursing through the city-state’s banking system daily, highlighting the potential for criminals to exploit this volume and obscure their illicit activities amidst legitimate financial transactions.

Singapore also does not limit the amount of cash that can be carried in and out of the country, only requiring a declaration if the sum exceeds S$20,000. And that is an advantage, says Christopher Leahy, the founder of Singapore-based investigative research and risk advisory firm Blackpeak.

“If you want to move lots of money, you hide it in plain sight and Singapore is a great place for that. There is no point putting it in the Cayman Islands or the British Virgin Islands, where there is nothing [to spend money on],” he said.

When asked for a response to analysts’ comments that Singapore’s advantages as a financial capital are also a draw for dirty money, authorities pointed the BBC to the law and home affairs minister interview in a local newspaper last year.

“We can’t close the window, because if we did that, then legitimate funds will also not be able to come. And legitimate business also can’t be done, or becomes very difficult to do. So we have to be sensible,” K Shanmugam said.

“When you are successful, you are a major financial centre, a lot of money comes in, some ‘flies’ will also come in,” he added, referring to an oft-repeated quote of the late Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping.

Singapore has to decide how far it will go in accepting “money with varying shades of grey”, says Dr Chong of Carnegie China.

While increased regulation will help, he says transparency poses a bigger challenge: “Transparency goes against the very model of discretion that allows many wealth management hubs to thrive.”

Some analysts say this may well be the price Singapore is willing to pay to retain its position as a financial hub.

“The vast majority of the funds are legitimate, after all,” Mr Leahy says. “But there is an inevitable cost to being a major financial centre.”

World Bank attributes Africa’s slow growth to structural inequalities

The World Bank’s chief economist for the region, Andrew Dabalen, emphasized deep-rooted inequalities as a major obstacle to Africa’s economic progress.

In an interview on Citi TV’s The Point of View, he highlighted the absence of critical infrastructure and limited intra-African trade as primary factors impeding growth.

“The speed at which Africa’s growth reduces poverty is only half than what we see in the rest of the world. East Asia is much higher.

One of the major reasons for that is what we call structural inequalities in this report.

“There are many reasons why Africa’s growth is low, part of it is that we don’t have infrastructure in terms of energy, water and sanitation, and we don’t really trade a lot with each other.

“We have lots of shocks from either commodity prices, conflict or climate disasters. One of the important determinants of this low growth and this ability of low growth to convert to poverty reduction is inequality and structural inequality.

Andrew Dabalen, further explained that inequalities are often caused by circumstances beyond an individual’s control.

And things like where you were born, your skin color, or whether you’re a man or a woman can greatly affect your access to education, healthcare, and food.

“They are inequalities because of circumstances an individual cannot control. You don’t have control over where you were born and who you were born to, your skin colour, or the fact that you are a man or a woman. These circumstances that you are born into account for almost 70% of all the differences you see between children’s access to education, health or nutrition.

“That is what we call structural, it’s not something you can change with your ability or something that the market can correct, it requires social policy action,” he told host Bernard Avle.

In the April 2024 Africa Pulse Report by the World Bank, there were forecasts for Africa. It predicted that Ghana’s economic growth would slow down in 2024, even though there were expectations of more economic activity.

In the video, Alesha congratulated Sarah on her fourth book and commended her for her charitable efforts, including donations to two UK charities and the refurbishment of a school library in Ghana.

“I read your story in the newspaper and it was very touching – it is because of people like you that I do what I do, and hearing your stories validates that and motivates me to keep going,” she said.

Alesha said her dream is to inspire the next generation, and for that, she was thrilled that her book – “Lightning Girl,” inspired Sarah to dream and do great things because “that was the intention of that book.”

Sarah’s father, Albert Kittoe, who joined her on the show, expressed his astonishment at his daughter’s decision to donate all proceeds from her book to charity at such a young age. He attributed her philanthropy to the family tradition of donating to charity every Christmas.

“I saw the joy on her face any time we went out to donate food and other items to homeless people during Christmas, and I believe that is where she took the inspiration from,” he said.

Performance tracker will not meet standards for undergraduate projects – Professor Kobby Mensah

Political marketing analyst Professor Kobby Mensah has voiced criticism against the government regarding the launch of the Performance Tracker platform.

According to the lecturer, there are numerous deficiencies in the platform, which he believes was inadequately designed.

The government introduced the Performance Tracker on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at GIMPA in Accra, with the objective of ensuring transparency and accountability in infrastructure project execution nationwide.

Officials believe that the tracker will help address longstanding concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of project presentations, especially concerning the use of artists’ impressions to depict outcomes.

The platform is intended to serve as a dependable mechanism for showcasing the progress and impact of infrastructure projects, fostering trust and confidence among citizens.

However, Professor Kobby Mensah expressed skepticism about the tracker’s efficacy, stating that it would not meet the standards of an undergraduate project. He highlighted the lack of evidence and reliance on unsubstantiated numbers and percentages for settings.

He further suggested that anyone who finds the platform functionally and aesthetically satisfying should be dismissed from their position, as their ability to judge quality would be questionable.

He posted on Facebook saying “The performance tracker won’t even pass for an undergraduate project. No evidence, only unsubstantiated numbers and percentages for settings. No logic function and terribly designed UI to pass for CX. This is coming from a govt of Ghana ooo, not a student assignment ???? you can have a look for yourself here. Anyone who finds this functionally and aesthetically satisfying must be fired from their work because then your quality judgment is nonexistent performancetracker.gov.gh.”

4-year-old boy drowns after falling into a well at Kwahu Tafo

A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, in Kwahu Tafo, Eastern Region, where a four-year-old child drowned in a well during the afternoon hours.

Local sources reported that the young boy was fetching water from the well when he was unexpectedly pulled into its depths by the bucket he was using.

Witnesses described the heartbreaking scene as other children who were present at the time rushed home in tears to alert the family about the distressing incident.

Following the retrieval of the boy’s body from the well, police were yet to transport it to the morgue at the time of the report filing.

Given the tender age of the child, concerns were raised about the parental supervision, as it appeared negligent to allow him to fetch water unattended.

The Children’s Act 560,(1998) states that “Every parent has rights and responsibilities whether imposed by law or otherwise towards his child which include the duty to: protect the child from neglect, discrimination, violence, abuse, exposure to physical and moral hazards and oppression”.

“The VAT structure is also a major concern. The import substitutions that have been coming back and forth are also a concern. So we have a whole lot of things that we are discussing, how to even industrialize the nation moving from trading to manufacturing and all that.”
