FLASHBACK: ‘Wee’ could surpass cocoa and oil as Ghana’s top foreign exchange earner – Ras Mubarak

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu Constituency, Ras Mubarak, expressed on April 9, 2021, his belief that the cultivation and commercialization of marijuana could elevate Ghana to become the leading foreign exchange earner.

“In Ghana, we have large tracts of land which support the growth of marijuana and promise higher yields. It will also create jobs for our farmers who after harvesting their food crops have to wait till another planting season, leaving their lands fallow. But if we can plant marijuana during that fallow period, it’ll be a huge source of revenue to the country”, he said.

Ras Mubarak, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kumbungu Constituency, advocates for Ghana to recognize the significant economic potential of marijuana instead of persisting in categorizing it as an illicit substance. He contends that legalizing and regulating the substance for commercial purposes could potentially elevate it to surpass cocoa and oil, emerging as the country’s primary foreign exchange earner.

Drawing parallels with Canada and the United States of America, where the commercialization of marijuana generates billions of dollars annually, he urges Ghana to consider a similar approach.

“We need to dissuade the minds of people. We’ve depended so much on cocoa and soon we will have to stop relying on oil too and we will not be gaining any revenue from that. So we need to look at generating revenue from our other resources”, he stated.

He believes Ghana has arable farmland to produce and compete if not surpass the multi-billion dollar marijuana industry of Canada and the US. “In Ghana, we have large tracts of land which support the growth of marijuana and promise higher yields. It will also create jobs for our farmers who after harvesting their food crops have to wait till another planting season, leaving their lands fallow. But if we can plant marijuana during that fallow period, it’ll be a huge source of revenue to the country”, he mentioned.

Ras Mubarak appeared on the Happy Morning Show, hosted by Raymond Nyamador and broadcasted on e.TV Ghana and Happy98.9FM.

Amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19 and the country’s economic struggles, the politician expressed his belief that Ghana would benefit from legalizing the use and sale of marijuana exclusively for industrial and medicinal purposes.

Although he asserts he has never intentionally consumed marijuana, Mubarak acknowledged using products such as eye drops and hair creams derived from the substance.

“The closest I have ever come to taking marijuana was when someone gave me ice cream which I did not know was made from weed”.

In recent times, there has been a growing push to legalize marijuana in Ghana, spearheaded by celebrities, Members of Parliament, and other advocates.

However, in March 2020, the Ghanaian Parliament passed the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, which permits the use and cultivation of marijuana for medical and industrial purposes. It’s important to note that this legislation only allows for the cultivation of hemp, a specific variety of marijuana.

Under the new law, there are strict regulations regarding the allowable concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana. The permitted THC concentration in the plants is limited to not more than 0.3%.

Recreational Marijuana use remains illegal in Ghana.

3% GDP growth rate for Ghana in 2024 – World Bank predicts

The World Bank anticipates Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow by approximately 3% by the end of 2024, as outlined in the April 2024 edition of the World Bank Africa Pulse report.

This growth rate signifies a deceleration compared to previous years, despite indications of economic activity and stability following challenges experienced in 2022 and 2023.

The World Bank also predicts a slowdown in Ghana’s growth trajectory for 2024, aligning with the government’s announced target of 2.8% GDP growth rate.

However, there is optimism for the future, with the report forecasting a significant rise in Ghana’s GDP to around 5% in 2025.

In terms of regional contribution to economic growth among the largest economies, Ghana’s GDP growth is expected to be approximately 0.10%, indicating a relatively modest impact on the overall regional economic landscape.

Nevertheless, the Africa Pulse report presents a positive outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa, with economic growth projected to accelerate to 3.4% in 2024 and further improve to an average rate of 3.9% in 2025 and 2026.

The report also offers recommendations for policy measures aimed at fostering equitable economic growth.

These include restoring macroeconomic stability, promoting intergenerational mobility, facilitating market access, and ensuring that fiscal policies do not disproportionately burden the poor and vulnerable segments of society.

  • 58% hike in cocoa farmgate price a rip-off – Asunafo South MP criticizes govt

58% hike in cocoa farmgate price a rip-off – Asunafo South MP criticizes govt

Member of Parliament representing the Asunafo South constituency, Eric Opoku, has strongly criticized the government’s decision to implement a 58 percent increase in the producer price for cocoa beans, labeling it as a blatant exploitation.

Expressing his bewilderment, Opoku questioned the rationale behind the government’s strategy of dividing the world market price into four parts, retaining three for itself and allocating only one portion to the cocoa farmers, who are the primary producers of this vital commodity.

During an appearance on Citi TV’s Point of View program, Opoku emphasized that no previous administration in Ghana’s history had ever allocated less than 40 percent of the world market price to cocoa farmers prior to the decision made by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

“The argument we are canvassing is that, in the history of cocoa in Ghana, no government has ever given cocoa farmers less than 40% of the world market price, it has never happened. Because COCOBOD is not the producer of the cocoa, it’s just the regulator of the sector,” the MP for Asunafo South said.

He added that, “The producers are there. Why should the government divide the world market price into four, take three and then give one to the cocoa farmers? What’s the rationale behind it? It’s a complete rip-off and it has never happened in the history of cocoa.”

The price of cocoa beans saw a significant hike, climbing from GH¢20,928 per tonne to GH¢33,120.00 for the remainder of the 2023/2024 cocoa season.

COCOBOD stated that the increase aimed to bolster the income of cocoa farmers while simultaneously discouraging the illicit smuggling of cocoa beans to neighboring countries.

This adjustment in pricing came into force on Friday, April 5, 2024.

  • Domelevo criticizes scholarship secretariat’s inefficiency and poor management

Domelevo criticizes scholarship secretariat’s inefficiency and poor management

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo has criticised the Scholarship Secretariat for being inefficient when it comes to its role.

According to him, it is worrying that the Secretariat lacks guidelines to determine who deserves scholarships and who does not.

This follows a report by The Fourth Estate uncovering instances where scholarships designated for financially disadvantaged students were awarded to successful politicians and their relatives.

Notably, the daughters of the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a former Inspector General of Police were listed among the beneficiaries.

Speaking on JoyNews on April 8, 2024, Mr Domelevo said leadership could have used its discretion wisely.

“Remember, you are occupying a public office. You do not exercise discretion capriciously, and anyhow, you must make sure that you are doing your work and that you are objective in the delivery of your work.

“They should be able to look at a guideline or a manual that they have formulated after consulting the various stakeholders to say, ‘well, from our point of view, if you say you are gifted and needy, you must meet these conditions’,” Mr Domelevo added.

Mr. Domelevo stressed that even if the children of the rich and powerful are being provided for, it should not be at the expense of state funds.

“In our audit report, one of our concerns was that according to the law, the monies should be given to the Scholarship Secretariat for them to administer, but then GETFund was administering it themselves.

“I am told that has changed, so the money has been given to the Scholarship Secretariat, who, from my point of view, is administering scholarships 24/7.

“But if this is how they are administering scholarships, then they are a complete waste. It is better if we scrap it. Not just waste; they are useless.

“I wish I had a harsher word for them, because 24/7 that is what they do, and they have not been able to come up with any guidelines to determine who qualifies for this to ensure they are within the remit of the law,” he stressed.

This comes after the Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, advocated for swift legislation to streamline the distribution of scholarships in the country to address numerous misconceptions about the scheme.

He highlights the current challenge faced by officers in making decisions due to the absence of clear legislation defining who qualifies as a needy individual for a scholarship.

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, has criticized the Scholarship Secretariat for its inefficiency in fulfilling its role.

He expressed concern over the lack of clear guidelines within the Secretariat to determine eligibility for scholarships.

Domelevo’s remarks come in the wake of a report by The Fourth Estate, revealing instances where scholarships intended for financially disadvantaged students were instead awarded to successful politicians and their relatives.

Notably, the daughters of the former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a former Inspector General of Police were among the beneficiaries.

Mr. Domelevo emphasized that while it’s acceptable to support the children of the wealthy and influential, it should not come at the cost of public funds.

“In our audit report, one of our concerns was that according to the law, the monies should be given to the Scholarship Secretariat for them to administer, but then GETFund was administering it themselves.

Suspend scholarship secretariat registrar – Minority demands

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate suspension of Dr. Kingsley Agyemang following the scandalous revelations exposed by the Fourth Estate.

The investigation points to irregular and biased practices in awarding scholarships by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat.

NDC MPs assert that the Fourth Estate’s findings have been corroborated by concerned citizens, both domestically and internationally.

They argue that such actions are unfair to deserving Ghanaian students who depend on the Secretariat for assistance.

In a press release issued on Monday, April 8, and endorsed by Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, minority members are urging for Dr. Kingsley Agyemang’s immediate suspension. They call on the President to address the issue promptly to prevent further misappropriation of public funds.

“We call on President Akufo-Addo to act swiftly in this matter in order to protect the public purse from further abuse.”

They have also called on the Special Prosecutor to promptly commence a forensic audit into the operations of the Secretariat.

“The Special Prosecutor must order an immediate forensic audit of all scholarships awarded since January 2017,” the statement added.

“I think a scholarship legislation is so eminent and that will set out everything that we need to do or how the funds need to be managed.”

“It’s been managed over the years by the dexterity of leaders. What I think is so important – so in conjunction with maybe National Development Planning Commission and DPC to really identify priority areas that as Ghanaians, we need to.”

  • Expose persons suspected with money laundering and unexplained wealth – BoG urges public

Expose persons suspected with money laundering and unexplained wealth – BoG urges public

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has urged the public to subject themselves to scrutiny regarding unexplained wealth and to report any suspicious financial transactions for investigation.

According to the BoG, this initiative is a part of the efforts to combat money laundering within the country.

These guidelines were outlined in the BoG’s notice concerning money laundering in Ghana.

“Sudden unexplained wealth could be as a result of money laundering and you could be prosecuted. Be sure to be in a position to satisfactorily explain your sources of wealth”, BoG cautioned.

The central bank urged the general public to collaborate with financial regulators by providing information regarding the source of funds used in various financial transactions across the country.

Additionally, the BoG cautioned bank customers against allowing their accounts to be used by friends for transactions that lack independent verification.

Money laundering involves the process of legitimizing money obtained from illegal activities like drug trafficking and corruption through complex transactions, a process known as ‘cleaning’, to conceal its illicit origin.

Both the illegal activities generating ‘dirty’ money and the act of money laundering to legitimize these proceeds are subject to legal penalties.

According to the BoG, money laundering not only undermines the credibility of financial institutions but also has wide-ranging implications for the economy, businesses, and society as a whole.

To combat money laundering and terrorist financing, individuals may be required to disclose and substantiate the source of funds utilized in transactions across all BoG licensed and regulated institutions.

In 2016, Ghana’s anti-money laundering, counter-financial terrorism, and proliferation financing regime were flagged for significant deficiencies during a mutual evaluation, resulting in greylisting by the Financial Action Task Force.

Ghana was only removed from the grey list in 2020 following extensive reforms aimed at fortifying the regime.

To sustain these achievements, the BoG cautioned that unexplained sudden wealth could be indicative of money laundering, potentially leading to legal action.

Furthermore, it advised the public to be capable of satisfactorily explaining the sources of their wealth, reminding them that assets and properties acquired through money laundering activities are subject to confiscation, with individuals involved facing prosecution.

This initiative forms a key part of his vision, aiming not only to address current health issues but also to proactively identify potential risks, ultimately promoting a healthier population nationwide.

Under this plan, individuals in Ghana who are not yet registered with the NHIS will be enrolled when they visit the hospital for their annual check-up.

During an exclusive interview with JoyNews’ Raymond Acquah, which is set to air soon on Upfront, Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, formerly the Director of Health Promotion at the Ghana Health Service, outlined the fundamental principles guiding this initiative.

At the core of his vision is the conviction that preventive healthcare is not merely a privilege reserved for a select few but rather an essential entitlement for all individuals.

“By shifting the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, Ghana can significantly reduce the burden of disease, improve overall well-being, and enhance productivity across all sectors of society,” he told Raymond Acquah.

The introduction of annual medical check-ups will act as proactive measures, enabling healthcare providers to identify health issues early when they are most manageable.

Additionally, these check-ups offer opportunities for health education and lifestyle guidance, empowering individuals to make informed decisions that support long-term health and well-being

French media conglomerate Canal+ has put forth a $2.9 billion (£2.2 billion) offer to acquire full ownership of South African broadcasting firm MultiChoice.

Kenyan doctors maintain strike despite president’s appeal

Kenyan doctors employed in public hospitals have pledged to remain on strike, disregarding President William Ruto’s plea to conclude a prolonged strike that has disrupted healthcare services nationwide.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) initiated the strike on 14 March, citing issues such as unpaid salary arrears and government delays in deploying medical interns, among other grievances.

President Ruto appealed to the striking doctors on Sunday, acknowledging the government’s inability to fulfill their demands due to escalating wage bills.

“I recognize the challenges facing our doctors and medical interns in Kenya. However, I urge them to understand that as a nation, we must live within our means,” Mr. Ruto stated.

Responding to President Ruto’s plea, KMPDU secretary general Davji Atellah emphasized that compromising their salaries to address wage bill concerns would amount to exploitation.

“The doctors’ wages are as vital as any other Kenyan’s salary,” Mr. Atellah affirmed.

Ex Nigerian Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele pleads not guilty to fresh charges

Godwin Emefiele, Nigeria’s former Central Bank Governor, pleaded not guilty to 26 new charges filed against him by the country’s financial watchdog.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused Mr. Emefiele of violating exchange rate regulations during his tenure as the head of the central bank.

He stands accused of improperly allocating $2 billion (£1.5 billion) in foreign exchange without adhering to proper procedures.

On Monday, the court in Lagos directed that Mr. Emefiele be held in the custody of the watchdog until the case resumes on Thursday.

Mr. Emefiele is already facing trial on 20 separate charges in a court in the capital Abuja, which include allegations of unlawfully withdrawing $6.2 million from the Central Bank.

He is the most prominent former official to face corruption charges since President Bola Tinubu assumed office last May.

His suspension came shortly after Mr. Tinubu criticized a major policy led by Mr. Emefiele during his presidential inauguration address in May, which involved the redesign of the currency, the naira.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Niger’s junta expressed dissatisfaction with the US military deal, describing it as a “fool’s bargain” that failed to benefit the nation.

The junta accused the US of exploiting Niger, meddling in its internal affairs, and attempting to control its foreign relations.

The statement questioned the sincerity of US interests in Niger, citing the failure to provide coordinates of terrorist bases and the absence of financial compensation for hosting US forces.

While the US State Department and Pentagon downplayed Niger’s rejection of the military agreement, they noted that ongoing discussions between the two countries persisted.

Initially displaying a positive attitude towards the US, Niger’s military junta has shifted towards Russia after severing ties with France last year.

Fatal ambush by South Sudanese army claims 3 lives – Officials

Local officials reported that a convoy was ambushed by the South Sudanese army, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuries to five others.

Nyinkwany Aguer Bol, the acting Minister of Information in the Abyei Special Administrative Area, characterized the attack, which occurred in Agok on Sunday, as an “attempted assassination” targeting key officials within the Abyei government.

Among those targeted were the Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agencies, and the Commissioner of Rum-Amer County, who were part of the convoy.

The South Sudanese army did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment.

Mr. Aguer condemned the incident and highlighted the presence of South Sudanese soldiers in schools in Agok as well as Sunday’s attack as evidence of the South Sudan army’s efforts to undermine the Abyei Administration’s existence.

Abyei is jointly administered by South Sudan and Sudan, both of which claim ownership of the region, contributing to a long-standing dispute unresolved since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.

Mr. Aguer urged the South Sudan army leadership in the capital Juba to promptly relocate its troops stationed along the border of Abyei and Twic County of Warrap State.

In February, two armed youth groups from Warrap State in South Sudan launched a raid on Abyei, resulting in the deaths of at least 50 individuals, including two UN peacekeepers.

  • “I don’t take any of my friends to any shrine and take their shine” – Salma Mumin

“I don’t take any of my friends to any shrine and take their shine” – Salma Mumin

Given Hajia4Reall’s recent challenges, many online have pondered why two of Salma Mumin’s close friends, Moesha and Hajia4Reall, seem to be facing turmoil while Salma continues to flourish.

Hajia4Reall is currently entangled in legal issues in the US concerning a $2 million romance scam, while reports suggest Moesha is grappling with a stroke, prompting a wave of questions among netizens.

When news of Moesha’s illness surfaced, concerns arose over Salma’s apparent silence on the matter, juxtaposed with her extensive travels and business ventures.

Shortly after Hajia4Reall’s arrest, Salma launched her ‘Lure by Salma’ clothing line, secured ambassadorial roles, and showcased her luxurious lifestyle online without acknowledging her friends’ challenges.

Recently, she acknowledged a falling-out with Moesha, and rumors circulated that she had also distanced herself from Hajia4Reall prior to her arrest.

Deloris Frimpong Manso (Delay), who came across such speculations online, took the opportunity to probe Salma for answers during Salma’s appearance on The Delay Show.

Delay, halfway through her conversation with Salma Mumin asked, “There have been claims that whenever you befriend someone, they fall into serious trouble that end up destroying their lives. They said you like juju (black charm) a lot, and you usually take them to shrines to destroy their lives while you flourish. They said that is exactly what you did to Moesha and Hajia4Reall.”

Salma who maintained her calm composure responded: “The day I saw such comments, I cried. I asked myself that if I were the one who was caught in an unfortunate situation like Moesha and Hajia4Reall, would people have said the same things about them? I can never do that. It hasn’t crossed my mind.”

Salma added, “I don’t consult any deity; I don’t take any of my friends to any shrine and take their shine. God is the one I look up to. Maybe such things happened to them coincidentally.”

Delay further quizzed: “But isn’t it too coincidental?”

Salma responded: “Too coincidental? That I took two of my closest friends to the shrine to destroy their lives? They were fabricated stories by people online. Everyone can just sit somewhere and fabricate lies.”

Asked why she is fond of keeping too many friends, Salma replied, “All my life, I have walked alone. I didn’t experience the kind of love usually gotten from siblings because I didn’t live with my parents. I never had a lot of people living with me as a family. So, growing up, when someone shows me little love, I draw them close.”

The strategy you are using to promote your upcoming Indigo O2 concert is childish – Arnold Asamoah tells Medikal

Ghanaian entertainment commentator Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has denounced award-winning rapper Medikal for what he deems as “unnecessary stunts” employed to promote his upcoming London concert at the Indigo O2 on May 3, 2024.

Arnold voiced his disapproval during his appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz show on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

Expressing his disappointment, the seasoned commentator highlighted that Medikal, being a prominent figure in the Ghanaian music industry, should have moved past the need for such attention-seeking maneuvers.

He stressed that Medikal’s stature in the industry should suffice to draw crowds to his concert without resorting to sensationalist tactics.

Arnold underscored the importance of strategic promotion, asserting that a well-executed marketing campaign would ensure a successful turnout at the concert, particularly considering the venue’s capacity of accommodating 2800 standing and 1800 sitting attendees.

In recent weeks, Medikal has been embroiled in various public controversies, including altercations with former AMG family member Showboy, nearly escalating into physical altercation.

The “Ronaldo” artist distanced himself from the AMG Business family and issued threats of physical harm against anyone associating him with the group.

Furthermore, Medikal announced his separation from his wife, actress, and entrepreneur Fella Makafui, clarifying that they are now co-parenting their daughter, Island Frimpong.

Speaking about the changing meanings attached to the term “slay queen,” she expressed regret over its transformation from symbolizing women of elegance and wealth to those linked with transactional connections.

“When slay queen started, it was women who could dress well and live a good life, but with time, the definition changed to girls who were into runs, so I just had to refrain from it,” she explained.

The actress also revealed that she’s been blessed with beauty that attracts wealthy men who favour her in many ways.

  • Noodles are unhealthy and dangerous, here is why

Noodles are unhealthy and dangerous, here is why

Instant noodles are easy to cook but have numerous health risks and dangers.

Instant noodles, comprising pre-cooked noodles crafted from flour, starch, water, salt, kansui, palm oil, and seasoning packets, were introduced in Japan in 1958 by Taiwanese-Japanese inventor Momofuku Ando.

Since their inception, they have garnered popularity as a convenient, easy-to-prepare meal.

Despite their widespread appeal due to convenience, affordability, and flavor, instant noodles pose various health risks. Although they are low in calories, they lack adequate fiber and protein, rendering them unsuitable for weight loss diets.

Regular consumption of noodles may fail to satiate hunger or support healthy gut bacteria, potentially leading to digestive issues and weight gain. A study conducted in South Korea revealed a heightened risk of metabolic syndrome, including obesity, among individuals consuming instant noodles more than twice a week.

Moreover, instant noodles are notorious for their high sodium content, with a single serving containing 397–3678 mg. Research from Pub Med Central suggests that the consumption of processed foods like instant noodles can elevate the risk of stomach cancer, heart disease, stroke, and hypertension.

Maintaining a healthy sodium intake, as per the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 2 grams per day, becomes challenging with just one pack of instant noodles, let alone multiple packs, which can result in excessive sodium intake.

  • IES proposes 3-pronged strategy for stable, affordable petroleum prices in Ghana

IES proposes 3-pronged strategy for stable, affordable petroleum prices in Ghana

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has suggested a three-pronged approach to ensure stable and affordable petroleum prices in Ghana.

This involves maintaining a strong currency, establishing a viable domestic oil refinery to decrease fuel imports, and achieving a delicate balance between the downstream and upstream petroleum sectors.

Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of IES, presented this proposal during an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Friday, April 5.

This recommendation follows the recent surge in fuel prices in Ghana, which have surpassed GHS14 per litre, marking the highest level in approximately 14 months. The last time fuel prices reached such levels was in February 2023, when they peaked at GHS15.

“A more sustainable approach is to have a very strong Cedi, make use of our indigenous crude oil, and build a synergy between the upstream and downstream petroleum sectors.” Nana Amoasi VII said.

He elaborated that the nation had experienced a 14-month period of elevated fuel prices and indicated that a significant decrease before December 2024 was improbable. Instead, he suggested that what was foreseeable would be a degree of stability.

“Between February 2023 and now, we still have been dependent on oil export; our refinery capacity continues to be low since the coming of Sentuo, which is also having erratic production due to power outages, exposing us to international market risks,” he said.

He also said: “Our cedi stabilised for a while, however, over the last month, there’s been a consistent decline in the value of the cedi against the importing currency – the Dollar, leading to a forex exposure, which is also working against us.”

The Executive Director of IES observed that the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy on petroleum products had proven ineffective in stabilising fuel prices. Therefore, he emphasized the necessity for substantive efforts to address the sector’s challenges.

He asserted that addressing these issues would contribute to stabilizing the prices of petroleum products in the country, especially petrol and diesel, which currently average almost GHS15 per unit.

“Let’s work at bringing back our Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) and ensure that we’re refining some of our crude domestically, and that could give us some savings from the forex,” he said.

Nana Amoasi VII remarked that fuel importation incurred additional expenses. However, with a well-integrated connection between the upstream and downstream petroleum sectors, taxes would be minimal, leading to reduced production costs.

“If the Sentuo Oil Refinery is working efficiently, we’ll get 45,000 barrels, and if we bring back TOR, we will get another 45,000 barrels. With this, we’ll be able to meet more than 90 per cent of our domestic demand of petroleum,” he said.

Potential buyers eye Newmont’s Akyem gold mine amidst rising gold prices

Newmont’s plan to sell the Akyem gold mine in Ghana has stirred interest among potential buyers, including Chinese mining companies, amid the uptrend in gold prices.

Following Newmont’s announcement of its intent to divest the mine, Australian miner Perseus Mining has also expressed interest in acquiring it. Newmont has enlisted Citigroup Inc. to oversee the sale process and has initiated discussions with prospective bidders.

Shandong Gold Mining Co. and Zijin Mining Group Co. are among the entities eyeing the asset, with Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining Co. also contemplating participation.

Negotiations are at an early stage, and interested parties may opt out of submitting bids. Newmont, Citigroup, Shandong Gold, and Zijin have refrained from commenting on the matter.

The divestment of Akyem forms part of Newmont’s strategy to raise $2 billion through asset sales following its acquisition of Newcrest Mining Ltd. in November. Alongside Akyem, Newmont plans to offload four gold mines in North America and one in Australia.

Akyem mine, which produced 420,000 ounces of gold annually as of 2022, holds significant value amid the recent surge in gold prices, which recently breached $2,200 per ounce. Newmont aims to shed non-core assets and streamline its workforce to alleviate debt stemming from the Newcrest acquisition.

Despite divesting Akyem, Newmont remains committed to its Ghanaian operations. The company recently disbursed GH¢184.6 million in dividends to the government for its stake in the mine’s operations and has lent support to the government’s gold-buying initiative.

Perseus Mining, already operating the Edikan Mine in Ghana, sees the potential acquisition of Akyem as a chance to double its gold output. Newmont anticipates Akyem’s production to reach 170,000 ounces in 2024, down from 295,000 ounces the previous year, while Ahafo South and Ahafo North mines will continue operations.

Newmont’s CEO, Tom Palmer, emphasized that the divestiture stems from the assets not meeting the company’s Tier-1 asset criteria.

Despite reporting a net loss attributable to impairment charges and reclamation costs, Newmont generated significant cash flow and dividends for shareholders in 2023.

  • New farmgate prices an insult – Cocoa farmers to COCOBOD

New farmgate prices an insult – Cocoa farmers to COCOBOD

The recent rise in cocoa farmgate price by the government has drawn criticism from the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association, who deem it insufficient.

On April 5, 2024, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) declared a 58.26 percent increase, establishing the price at GH¢33,120 cedis per ton for the 2023/2024 crop season. This adjustment aims to equitably allocate the benefits of the escalating global cocoa prices and discourage cocoa bean smuggling.

However, Stephenson Anane Boateng, President of the Ghana National Cocoa Farmers Association, argues that cocoa farmers are being treated unjustly.

In response to COCOBOD’s decision, Anane Boateng stated, “Cocoa has been raised globally to $10,000 per metric ton. So if you compare, and you convert to our currency, it is running into over GH¢9,000. We totally disagree with them. We pay our labour, we buy inputs for the farm, and then we also pay ourselves.”

“So in a nutshell, we get only GH¢600 for that while COCOBOD also gets GH¢7,000. So what work did COCOBOD do and give us that money? It’s an insult!” he asserted.

Plan International Ghana, World Vision Ghana NGOs denounce child marriage, calls on govt to step in

Two non-governmental organizations, Plan International Ghana and World Vision Ghana, have strongly denounced the reported marriage between a minor and a 63-year-old fetish priest in Nungua, Accra.

Expressing profound concern over the alleged union, the organizations rebuked any attempts to justify it under the guise of cultural practices. This sentiment was articulated in a joint statement signed by the Country Director of Plan International Ghana, Constant Tchona, and the National Director of World Vision Ghana, Laura Cristina del Valle, dated April 5.

Characterizing the act as repugnant, the organizations emphasized that there is no justification for marrying off a child, asserting that a girl child is not a bride. They underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the child in all situations and condemned child marriage as a form of gender-based violence and a serious violation of human rights.

Drawing attention to the grave implications of child marriage, particularly on the girl child’s health, education, and overall development, the organizations referenced the Children’s Act of Ghana, 1998 (Act 560), which prohibits the marriage or betrothal of children under the age of 18 years.

The statement also affirmed the organizations’ commitment to international conventions such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which obligates the state to eradicate child marriage and protect children from exploitation and abuse.

While commending the Ghana Police Service for swift intervention and providing protection to the child and her mother, Plan International Ghana and World Vision Ghana called for concrete actions from the government.

They demanded the enforcement of laws to deter similar acts, collaboration with law enforcement agencies and civil society organizations for swift justice, prevention of parental support for such marriages, and the abolition of harmful traditional practices.

Additionally, the NGOs urged the release of the 12-year-old girl to continue her education in a safe environment, protection from victimization and stigma, and extensive public education to raise awareness about harmful traditional practices.

Reaffirming their commitment to promoting gender equality and ending Child Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM), the organizations declared that it has no place in society and must be eradicated.

They pledged to continue providing resources to protect, fulfill, and promote children’s rights, especially those of the girl child, in accordance with international frameworks.

  • You are a witch if you put pressure on your financially unstable lover – Felicia Osei to women

Well-known TikToker in Ghana, Felicia Osei, has criticized women who persistently ask for money from their partners despite knowing their financial struggles.

In her view, such demands are illogical and lack sensitivity towards the partner’s situation. Felicia went as far as labeling such women as “witches” for their lack of empathy towards their partners.

During a live session on TikTok, monitored by GhanaWeb, Felicia advised women against making financial demands from their partners when they themselves are not financially stable.

“Any woman who is dating a guy and is aware that he is not financially stable yet pressure him for money is a witch. There is no explanation to this because you know the guy is not in good financial condition, so why would you force him to give you money?”

She also urged men to avoid entering into relationships if they do not have sufficient income to support the associated expenses.

“To the men, I would advise that if you don’t have money, don’t go into a relationship,” she added.

Ghana boosts Cocoa farmgate price by 58.26% for 2023/2024 Season

Ghana has announced a significant increase in the farmgate price paid to cocoa farmers, raising it by 58.26% to GH¢33,120 per tonne for the 2023/2024 crop season.

The new price will come into effect from April 5, 2024.

Sources indicate that this adjustment aims to distribute profits from the surging global cocoa prices and discourage farmers from engaging in bean smuggling.

Over the past year, cocoa prices have surged dramatically, more than tripling, due to disease outbreaks and adverse weather conditions in Ghana and neighboring Côte d’Ivoire, leading to a third consecutive deficit in the global market.

Presently, Ghana’s state-guaranteed cocoa price stands at GH¢20,943 cedi ($1,574.66) per tonne or approximately GH¢21 per kilogram.

Following suit, Côte d’Ivoire also raised its farmgate price to 1,500 CFA francs ($2.47, or about GH¢33) per kilogram for the April-to-September mid-crop of the 2023/24 season, up from 1,000 CFA francs last season.

“I may attend your funeral” – Professor Adei to netizen forging his death

Professor Emeritus Stephen Adei, a distinguished economist, administrator, and writer, confidently asserts that he might be present to attend the funeral of an accuser who insinuates that his demise is imminent.

In a statement refuting allegations that he made a malicious claim against President Akufo-Addo, which were falsely attributed to him via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prof. Adei cites his accuser’s suggestion of his impending death. He affirms that he does not fear this fate, as a Christian.

“My attention has been drawn to an X (formerly Twitter) post by one @nyavorx on Friday, March 29, 2024 which purports that I Stephen Adei have said, “If we do not REVIEW this CONSTITUTION and in the unlikely event we get another power drunk and autocratic man like Nana Addo, as for me I’d have visited my grave.

“I want to state categorically that this is false news. I have never made such a statement.

“The statement is by an individual with malicious intent trying to cause mischief and stir up disaffection. Worse still the one envisages my death soon, which as a believer in Jesus I have no problem with, even though I may attend the funeral of such an evil person,” he said.

Professor Adei, who recently stepped down as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), refutes the claim attributed to him, asserting that he has never made such a statement and deeming it untrue.

Professor Adei, who recently resigned from his position as the Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), denies making the claim attributed to him, emphasizing its falsehood. As a former international diplomat and public servant, he states that he would not use terms like “power drunk” and “autocratic man” to describe the President of Ghana.

Bawumia expresses desire for Ghana to become leading pharmaceutical center in West Africa

Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, addressed the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, revealing his plans to establish Ghana as a pharmaceutical hub in the West Africa sub-region by next year.

In a meeting held in Accra on Monday, Dr. Bawumia engaged with key stakeholders to elaborate on his vision for the industry and the country.

He emphasized his goal of leveraging Ghana’s comparative advantage to position it as a leading pharmaceutical hub in West Africa.

“The gains will be huge for Ghana and we have to do it because we have a comparative advantage,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“But first we need to support it with financial resources,” added the NPP flagbearer, stressing the need for strong political will and significant funding.

The NPP flagbearer also explained how his proposed tax reforms, including tax amnesty and flat tax rate for businesses, will help the industry.

In his quest to transform the pharmaceutical industry under his government, Dr. Bawumia identified the development of human resources, as one of the key areas he will focus on.

“There are many aspects if we want to be the best and human capital is one. Without that, we cannot be the best so we also have to invest in the training of pharmacists in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It should be possible for us to establish a pharmaceutical training centre to focus on training more pharmacists, which will impact positively on our quest to be the best in West Africa.”

As part of his government’s vision to support the training of pharmacists, Dr. Bawumia said his government will prioritise scholarships for students pursuing pharmacy.

The NPP flagbearer also spoke of the need for a pharmaceutical park in Ghana to boost the industry.

On the operations of pharmacies in Ghana, Dr. Bawumia gave an update on e-pharmacy – the nationwide online platform for pharmacies in Ghana, which he spearheaded its creation.

  • Causes and signs of depression you should know

Causes and signs of depression you should know

Clinical Psychologist, Jude Richwell Menokpor, outlines common causes of mental health disorders like depression and educates on signs indicating a potential onset of depression.

He emphasizes biological and psychological factors as triggers for depression and various mental health issues. Providing in-depth insights on GhanaWeb TV’s Lowdown program, Jude elaborates further, stating:

“With mental health disorders, the causes are…we have a myriad of causes, a lot of them and it stems from; like I mentioned earlier in the part one that the biopsychosocial model where the biological causes could either be hereditary. So, you could have inherited the condition from a parent, a first-line family member or someone. It is genetic. Your genetic makeup could determine your vulnerability to this condition.”

He continued, “Coming to psychological, it could be issues regarding things that can disrupt your psychological well-being or state. So, something with regards to your relationship not working out well, your expectations for something and then it not happening and maybe having low self-esteem, not understanding the reason why certain things are happening and also importantly, having a pessimistic mindset. So, people tend to attribute whatever happens to them to negative things,” he told GhanaWeb’s Daniel Oduro.

Additionally, the Clinical Psychologist mentioned that individuals experiencing difficulty conforming to societal norms may also undergo mental or psychological distress.

“For instance, you get an accident, a minor accident not a major road accident and then you assume that you are not lucky enough; you are not worthy enough to have been favoured by God to avoid such an accident happening to you.

“Also, we mentioned earlier that issues regarding the society, you not being able to conform with societal norms can cause you to have mental or psychological distress or mental health issues,” he said.

Jude also highlighted that issues within the family structure can contribute to depression, citing family size as a potential factor.

“Maybe you grew up in a large family size where attention wasn’t particularly given to you because of the number of people in your family and that could also lead you to have mental health issues,” he concluded.

On the same show, Priscilla Armah who is also a trainee Clinical Psychologist said Menopause has been identified as a cause of some mental health disorders.

She asserted that during menopause, there are hormonal changes which can cause depression as well as low self-esteem.

“So, menopause can also cause depression because at that age, the hormonal changes and all that, because you are no more menstruating and the hormone that is causing it has stopped, it can lead the person into depression.

“So, if I have a problem with my shape, I think any dress I wear doesn’t fit, I think when I pass by and people are even laughing, I think they’re laughing at me, I’m not having that confidence and all that. I think about all that, it makes me feel sad and that one causes depression and then the postpartum depression we talked about and then also the family history.”

“So, if an uncle was diagnosed with depression or anxiety and you ask and you are told your grandfather too was diagnosed, the probability of you also getting it is very high,” she said.

  • GRIDCo analyzes why Ghanaians are experiencing dumsor currently

GRIDCo analyzes why Ghanaians are experiencing dumsor currently

The following analysis by GRIDCo delves into Ghana’s power supply situation spanning from March 27 to April 2, 2024, shedding light on the factors contributing to the recurrence of dumsor or load management.

Since the onset of March 2024, GRIDCo has been diligently monitoring Ghana’s power generation crisis, acknowledging the hurdles in meeting the nation’s electricity demands. The decision to curtail power exports as of March 27 underscores the severity of the situation, signaling an urgent need for proactive measures and strategic planning.

Ghana’s peak electricity demand has surged to 3,618 MW, surpassing the available capacity of 3,251 MW by a significant margin. Despite having an installed capacity of 5,626 MW, the country is utilizing only around 58% of its total capacity, resulting in a substantial deficit of 2,375 MW. This deficit is further compounded by a 740 MW shortfall attributed to ongoing maintenance activities, placing additional strain on the electricity supply infrastructure.

Amidst the maintenance-related challenges, uncertainties loom over the restoration timelines for 330 MW of capacity, adding complexity to the grid’s stability. Moreover, the absence of 4 thermal plants, collectively capable of generating 595 MW, due to inadequate fuel supply exacerbates the situation. Additionally, a fault in the TICO unit 3 plant has rendered 120 MW unavailable until December 2024, impacting the entire year’s power generation by that capacity.

As a result, Ghana grapples with a significant 1,455 MW shortfall in electricity generation capability, with limitations in gas supply further exacerbating the challenge. Despite efforts to reduce power exports by 40% during peak hours to prioritize local demand, the gap persists.

The hydroelectric landscape presents a mixed picture, with the Akosombo dam maintaining stable electricity generation owing to its sufficient water levels. However, declining water levels at the Bui dam raise concerns. If this downward trend persists, the Bui dam’s ability to generate power could be compromised, necessitating its restricted usage to peak hours only.

If you don’t win, you won’t come to power! It is a fact – A Plus to political parties

Entertainment pundit, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has criticized detractors for misinterpreting Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong’s remarks about withholding power from the NDC.

Acheampong recently restated his position from 2023, firmly stating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not cede power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a health walk in Kwahu, the Abetifi MP emphasized his skepticism about the NDC’s electoral prospects and questioned their relentless pursuit of power despite their inability to secure victory in elections.

“Last year I stood here in Mpraeso and said that whether NDC likes it or not they will never win the 2024 polls. If you don’t win an election, will power be handed over to you? We will not hand it over to them today or tomorrow,” Mr. Acheampong was heard saying.

His remarks have ignited widespread criticism from the public, with many arguing that they pose a threat to the country’s peace as the elections approach.

However, A Plus holds a different perspective.

Taking to Facebook, the social commentator defended Bryan Acheampong’s statements, providing a detailed explanation of what he believes the minister actually intended to convey.

“What is wrong with this statement? ‘You won’t win and if you don’t win, we won’t hand over power to you.’ What is wrong with it? Did he say if you win, they won’t hand over power? Have you seen or heard that a party came to power because they lost the election before? Work hard and win,” he stated.

A Plus continued, “When you are allocated money for the grassroots who are working tirelessly for the party make sure it gets to them. Don’t engage in the same 4ckry that went on in some places during the 2020 elections where some accept banku and tilapia, fried rice and chicken, etc on election day and allow their opponents to rig the election. If you don’t win, you won’t come to power! It is a m@da4kn fact!! Thank you!!”

Road Minister assures Bono East community of govt’s commitment to infrastructure development

As part of his official tour of the Bono East region, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, paid a visit to the Asueyi Chief Palace in the Techiman North constituency.

During the visit, the Minister reassured Chief Nana Oti Panin and the local community of the government’s dedication to improving their road network.

Prior to the Minister’s arrival, there had been unrest among some of the youth in the community, who threatened to boycott the upcoming elections if the road issues were not addressed.

In his speech, Chief Nana Oti Panin emphasized the urgent need for action regarding the incomplete Asueyi and Buoyem road project. He highlighted the detrimental impact of the inadequate road infrastructure on the daily lives of the community members.

Additionally, the Chief drew attention to the lack of access to clean water, which further compounded the challenges faced by residents. He expressed concern over the political implications of neglected roads, citing the loss of the Techiman North seat by the NPP party in previous elections.

However, he urged the Roads Minister to prioritize road repairs to avoid additional electoral setbacks and enhance the residents’ quality of life.

Bawumia urged to set up scholarship scheme for Pharmacist to pursue specialization

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has called on the government to create a scholarship program aimed at enabling more individuals to pursue specialization.

Dr. Samuel Donkor, the President of the Society, highlighted that while there is an institution for specialization, the lack of financial resources prevents many individuals from furthering their education. Consequently, the Society suffers from a shortage of specialists.

“We need specialists in pharmacy. We have oncologist specialists in pharmacy, we have cardiovascular training specialists, and in a whole lot of fields. The government has established Ghana College, yet our pharmacists going to Ghana College are not being sponsored and that is on our agenda – human resource empowerment.

“Please look into it and let us get the sponsorship for pharmacists to be able to go to college for specialization,” he said.

He shared these remarks during a stakeholder engagement session with the Pharmaceutical Society on April 4, chaired by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

In response, the Vice President vowed to elevate the pharmaceutical industry to excellence within the sub-region.

He pledged to replicate efforts to enhance infrastructure for training pharmacy students, akin to the support provided for the construction of the hostel at Trinity Theological Seminary through the GETFund.

“We are also doing that even for Kayaye. Yes, we have skilled training centres that I would be commissioning next to train Kayaye. We build these things.

“So why can’t we build a major pharmaceutical training center for our pharmacists who would deliver the goods to us? So, I fully agree to this,” he added.

  • Alan Kyerematen and Abu Sakara Foster unite to establish coalition for 2024 elections

Alan Kyerematen and Abu Sakara Foster unite to establish coalition for 2024 elections

Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (M4C) and Dr. Abu Sakara Foster’s National Interest Movement (NIM) have jointly announced the successful completion of discussions with various political entities to establish a grand alliance for the upcoming 2024 General elections.

According to a press release issued by M4C on Thursday, April 4, the alliance aims to challenge the entrenched dominance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The statement underscores that both major parties have failed to adequately address the fundamental developmental issues confronting the nation.

It highlights the recurring lack of continuity in government projects, a trait associated with the NDC-NPP duopoly, as a pressing concern that needs to be tackled.

The alliance contends that such shortcomings cannot be allowed to persist, emphasizing the imperative of a fresh governance approach that prioritizes sustained national development and progress.

“The Alliance seeks to end the dominance of the duopoly, the NDC and the NPP, in Ghanaian politics, two Parties which after 32 years in government, have failed to address the fundamental challenges of development in our beloved country. The divisiveness in Ghanaian politics, the ‘Winner takes all’ syndrome as well as the lack of continuity in the execution of government projects which have been associated with the duopoly, have brought untold hardships on the good people of Ghana.

”The Alliance will work towards forming an all-inclusive Government of National Unity with representation from Political Parties, the Business Community, Farmers and Fishermen, Labour Unions, Faith-Based Organizations, Traditional Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, Academia, Media, and other Stakeholder Interest Groups. The Alliance will also mobilize consensus towards a National Development Plan which will go beyond Party Manifestoes and constitute the Blueprint for Ghana’s economic transformation,” they indicated in a statement.

Bobrisky arrested for spraying cash at Eniola Ajao’s ‘Beasts of Two Worlds’ movie

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detains crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for Naira Mutilation.

In accordance with Nigerian law, tampering with the Naira note or coin constitutes an offense punishable by law.

The crossdresser was caught on video spraying bundles of Naira at the premiere of Eniola Ajao’s ‘Beasts of Two Worlds’ movie on March 24, 2024.

Premium Times Nigeria reported that the EFCC’s investigation revealed additional instances where Bobrisky allegedly committed the same offense at various event centers and parties.

The EFCC disclosed on Thursday that Bobrisky was arrested at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on April 3, 2024, and is currently being held at the EFCC facility pending legal proceedings.

Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, announced the arrest, “Bobrisky is with us. He was arrested last night in Lagos, and he is at our Lagos command. We arrested him for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among others.”

“We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the naira. Though our investigation is still ongoing, but he will definitely be charged to court soon,” Mr Oyewale added.

Just two months ago, Nigerian actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin faced conviction for spraying and stepping on new Naira notes during an event.

  • There is nothing Ablakwa can do about increase in passport fees – Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister

There is nothing Ablakwa can do about increase in passport fees – Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Reintegration has firmly stated that there will be no reconsideration of the recent adjustments made to passport application fees.

This declaration comes in response to remarks made by Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament and MP for North Tongu, who criticized the new fees as draconian and urged for their reversal.

As of April 1, the ministry implemented an increase in application fees for passport services, establishing them at GH¢500 for a 32-page standard booklet and GH¢644 for a 48-page standard booklet.

Furthermore, expedited services now come with fees of GH¢700 for the 32-page option and GH¢800 for the 48-page option.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mr. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, reiterated that the fees would remain unchanged despite calls for a review.

Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong emphasized the importance of the fee adjustments for investing in and improving service delivery, asserting that any attempts to contest the decision would be unsuccessful.

He told journalists: “With the support of the majority of Ghanaians, it has come to stay”, adding: “There is nothing he [Mr Ablakwa] can do about it. He can make his noise out there. If he wants to bring it to Parliament, we will meet him on the floor of Parliament, we will discuss it and will debate it; and at the end of the day, I can bet my last cedi he will fall flat on his face”.

“The reason why we are introducing this, like I said, principally, is the fact that we need to invest and improve service delivery”, he explained.
