    O’Reilly SHS murder suspect arrested

A final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of his classmate during a violent altercation on the school campus.

The tragic incident has left the school community in shock and mourning.

The altercation, which took place on Monday, September 2, began as a heated argument between the two students and escalated into a physical confrontation. Reports indicate that the suspect allegedly used a sharp object to stab his colleague three times.

The victim was immediately rushed to the LEKMA hospital by fellow students but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Enoch Sackey, the father of the deceased, recounted the tragic events leading to his son’s death. “What happened was yesterday [Monday, September 2] I saw my boy off to come to school and I also went to work. So I was at work and my niece called me that Edward was having a misunderstanding, one of the students was having a misunderstanding with Edward so I should come,” Sackey said.

Despite his niece’s urgent plea, Sackey was dismayed to learn that the teachers were not intervening in the situation. As he rushed to the school, he received another call informing him that Edward had been stabbed and was lying on the school premises. By the time Sackey arrived at the hospital, his son had already succumbed to his injuries.

“The doctor said Edward has passed away. So when they showed me the body, he had been stabbed three times on his chest,” he recounted.

Sackey expressed frustration over the lack of response from both the school authorities and the police. He criticized the school for its failure to provide immediate information and support.

“The school authority has not said anything from yesterday up till now. The police have not called, the school authority has not called, even the boy who killed my son, neither the family have even reached me. That is why we are here to seek justice for my son,” Sackey lamented.

His call for justice was further fueled by the presence of police officers blocking the school gates, preventing him from entering the premises.

“They have brought policemen to block every gate stopping us from going in…So that is why we are here,” he added.

O’Reilly SHS to be dragged to court over death of student stabbed thrice

Father of Edward Sackey, an 18-year-old General Arts student from O’Reilly Senior High School, Enoch Sackey, has announced his intention to sue the school following his son’s tragic death.

Edward was fatally stabbed during an altercation with a classmate from the Visual Arts Department on Monday, September 2.

According to reports, the altercation that led to Edward’s death was reportedly sparked by a dispute over personal wealth. Edward was stabbed three times in the chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect, Godwin, has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service.

In an interview with Accra-based CitiNews, Enoch Sackey expressed profound frustration and demanded accountability from the school for the circumstances leading to his son’s death.

“We have to sue the school, we have to hold the school responsible,” Sackey asserted. “We want the school authority to come out and explain why such a thing would happen on school premises, where the teachers, nobody tried to interfere… they were all unconcerned until my son passed away.”

Sackey further criticized the school’s teachers for negligence, noting that his niece had called him to the school due to the fight but he did not understand why the teachers did not handle the situation. “I went to the school in Accra to understand the happenings, but sadly, I found my son covered in blood,” he said.

On Tuesday, Sackey and other family members, dressed in red and black, picketed the school to voice their dissatisfaction. They have expressed disappointment that neither the school administration, the attacker’s family, nor the police have contacted them regarding the incident.

Sackey emphasized, “We want answers from the school authority, and the parents of the boy and the police. We want justice, and we want the school authority to explain to us if the teachers were not at the school when it happened, or they were there, or they did not care.”

Free, fair, credible and peaceful elections are hinged on trust – Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has underscored the essential role of trust in ensuring free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections in Ghana.

Speaking at the annual Speaker’s seminal lecture at the University for Development Studies in Tamale, he emphasized that good governance and credible elections are not the sole responsibility of any single individual, institution, or group. Instead, they require the collective effort of all stakeholders working together to build and maintain trust.

The lecture, held under the theme “Working Together: Building Trust for a Free, Fair, Credible, and Peaceful Election: The Role of Stakeholders,” saw Speaker Bagbin highlight the diminishing presence of trust in society. He warned that without this key ingredient, achieving the electoral integrity that Ghana aspires to would be impossible.

“We cannot achieve free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections without trust,” he stated, urging all stakeholders—citizens, institutions, and political actors alike—to collaborate closely and foster trust within and among state institutions.

The event featured contributions from prominent figures, including security consultant Prof. Emmanuel Kwesi Anning, Mr. Kofi Bentil of IMANI Africa, and Mr. Samuel Tettey of the Electoral Commission.

The gathering brought together a wide range of participants, such as chiefs, academics, religious leaders, civil society organizations, political parties, local government officials, security services, students, and youth groups, all focused on the importance of trust in achieving successful elections in Ghana.

Quality of fuel top-most priority for Ghanaian consumers – COPEC

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) Ghana has revealed that the quality of petroleum products remains the top priority for consumers in the Ghanaian market.

This preference for high-quality fuel surpasses other considerations such as pricing and quantity, underscoring the importance consumers place on fuel that ensures the longevity and performance of their vehicles.

The recent surge in market performance by the indigenous oil marketing company, Star Oil, highlights this trend. Star Oil has risen to become the second-largest seller of petroleum products by volume, surpassing industry giants like TotalEnergies and Shell, with only GOIL maintaining a higher market share.

Star Oil’s success has been largely attributed to its competitive pricing, but COPEC’s Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, emphasized that quality is the primary factor driving consumer choice.

“The number one concern as far as the consumer preference is concerned is always about the right quality. When you move from the right quality parameter, they will now look at the right price, and the third most essential is the right quantity,” Amoah explained during an interview with Joy Business. He further noted that even when other oil marketing companies (OMCs) offer lower prices, many consumers prefer brands like Star Oil and GOIL due to the assurance of quality, which protects their engines from potential damage.

Amoah described Star Oil’s rise as a positive development for the industry, as it fosters competition that ultimately benefits consumers. He also advised OMCs to prioritize fuel quality to maintain and strengthen their market positions.

Abusing Parliament’s Orders to recall Parliament could turn into horror movie – Bagbin warns Majority

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to the Majority in Parliament, criticizing their decision to recall the House from its break, which he described as acting in bad faith.

The recall was prompted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs to address several urgent matters, including the approval of loans and taxes.

The recall was initiated by Majority Leader, Afenyo Markin, who invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Order 53(2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament. However, during the session, Speaker Bagbin expressed his disappointment, noting that many of the items listed for consideration were not of an urgent nature.

“Despite the efforts of the House, some businesses could not be completed, and I indicated to the House my no objection to the House being recalled to mid-September under Article 112(3). To exercise this option immediately a day after this adjournment is, to say the least, unfortunate and in bad faith,” Bagbin stated.

While acknowledging that he is obligated to summon Parliament once Article 112(3) is triggered, as per the Constitution, Bagbin raised concerns about the frequent use of this article by a section of Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin cautioned against turning this article into a tool for keeping Parliament in continuous session, warning, “A frequent revocation of Article 112(3), particularly in a House such as this 8th Parliament, could pose challenges to the governance of the country. The good intentions of the drafters of the Constitution could be turned into a horror movie.”

He emphasized the need for broader consideration of the context in which these provisions operate, suggesting that Parliament should legislate preconditions under which Article 112(3) could be applied.

Alan Kyerematen promises legal private firms for youth engaged in galamsey

The leader of the Movement for Change and a presidential aspirant for the 2024 general elections, Alan Kyerematen, has pledged to create legal private firms for young people involved in illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

Speaking to the media during his campaign tour, Mr Kyerematen emphasized the need for a new approach to the issue, which has plagued many communities across Ghana.

He noted that in many mining centres, just as in areas where agriculture or fishing is dominant, mining is considered a primary livelihood by the locals.

Mr Kyerematen proposed that the government develop “a new business model to create a legitimate framework” for young people to engage in mining activities legally.

He stressed that his administration would organize and mobilize the youth engaged in galamsey into legal private entities, ensuring they operate under proper regulations.

“Under my presidency, we will organize and mobilize them, and the government will support them to have legal private entities,” he said.

Mr Kyerematen further stated that these entities would be licensed and provided with the necessary financial support to acquire the appropriate machinery, enabling them to mine according to environmental standards.

The devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment is well-documented, with rivers like the Bonsa in the Western Region and the Pra in the Ashanti Region suffering from severe pollution due to the harmful chemicals used by illegal miners.

Forest reserves such as the Tano Nimiri in the Western North Region and the Draw River in the Western Region have also been heavily impacted.

The management of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region has reported significant disruptions in water services to Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas due to this pollution.

Presently, the government’s efforts including deploying security agencies to affected areas and arresting culprits are yet to nib the menace in the bud.

Several shops in Kasoa destroyed by fire

A devastating fire swept through Kasoa on Monday evening, destroying multiple shops and structures at Ghana Flag Junction.

The blaze, which broke out around 5:30 pm, has left significant damage in its wake, with property worth tens of thousands of cedis lost.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were promptly called to the scene and have been working tirelessly to bring the inferno under control.

Despite their efforts, several businesses, including carpentry shops and drinking spots located along the Kasoa-Obom road, have been completely gutted.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported at this time. However, the fire has sparked concerns among local residents, who fear that the proximity of power lines and nearby filling stations could lead to an even more dangerous situation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Defunct DKM microfinance owner is a financier of Bawumia – Mahama claims

Flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has claimed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is being financially sponsored by the founder of defunct DKM Financial Services, Martin Dele

He believes funds meant for customers of the defunct financial institution are being used to sponsor the Vice President’s campaign. He noted that his claim was corroborated by Defence Minister Ambrose Dery who said “the DKM owner is an NPP member”.

In 2015, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) suspended the operations of DKM Diamond Microfinance Company Limited for violating the Banking Act.

Also, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze five accounts of the company, directing an immediate freeze of all debit transactions on any of the five accounts.

A letter signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the FIC, Mr S.T. Essel, listed the accounts as DKM Mining, Transport, Shea Butter, Cement Depot, all limited liability companies, and DKM Gas Filling Station, all under the DKM Group.

But in a swift rebuttal, the company denied any such actions by the two institutions, insisting that “we are a genuine financial institution registered under the Banking Act of Ghana and under no circumstance should we carry out any activity which is contrary to the approved regulations by the BoG”.

In July this year, Martin Dele was sighted in the company of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia during a campaign tour in Nandom.

  • “We might not have water” – GWCL on imminent devastating effect of galamsey

“We might not have water” – GWCL on imminent devastating effect of galamsey

There is an imminent water crisis if immediate measures are not taken to curb the destructive impact of illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, according to the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr. Clifford Braimah.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr. Braimah issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of ongoing water treatment inefficiencies exacerbated by rampant pollution from galamsey operations.

Dr. Braimah expressed deep concern over the escalating volumes of water loss during the treatment process, which have far surpassed acceptable levels. He explained that while the ideal water loss in treatment plants should be around 5%, current losses range between 35% and 50%, a situation he described as “very harmful to our health.”

“The process losses that we are supposed to have on our plant should be 5% or less, but now we are having between 35% to 50% process loss,” Dr. Braimah stated.

He warned that if the situation persists, Ghana could face a future where access to safe drinking water is severely compromised. “We might not even have water,” he cautioned, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

The impact of galamsey on water treatment is profound, with Dr. Braimah highlighting that instead of 95% of treated water reaching customers, only 50% to 55% is currently being delivered. This reduction in water supply is compounded by the increased costs associated with maintaining even this diminished output.

“To even get this 50% or 55%, you have to use more chemicals—more expensive chemicals—to achieve that,” he noted, stressing the unsustainable nature of the current approach.

Dr. Braimah emphasized the critical need for immediate action, urging both citizens and authorities to move beyond political rhetoric and confront the reality of the situation. “Our rhetoric needs to go beyond the political jargons to the reality that citizens must take control over their lives,” he asserted.

While the current water treatment process remains effective in removing harmful elements, Dr. Braimah warned that the continued accumulation of pollutants from galamsey could eventually overwhelm the system.

“It does not mean that once it continues to accumulate, we are not going to get to the levels that we might not be able to do professional treatment to work,” he explained. The ongoing pollution, if left unchecked, could lead to levels that the treatment system cannot handle, posing a dire threat to the nation’s water supply.

Dr. Braimah called on Ghanaians to take the situation seriously and work collectively to prevent further pollution. “The caution is very critical for us to take up and ensure that we do not continue to pollute, so that we will get to levels that are not tolerable to the system, that can create problems for us,” he urged.

When questioned about how long it might take for the situation to reach a critical point, Dr. Braimah admitted it is difficult to predict, noting that detailed analyses have yet to be conducted. He suggested that the Water Resources Commission might have more specific information on the timeline for potential disaster.

In a related development, the GWCL has provided clarification on the ongoing water shortages in the Central and Western regions, pointing to the compounding effects of pollution and treatment inefficiencies.

GWR confirms Ghanaian, Abdul Hakim Awal, as new record holder for “tree-hug-a-thon”

Abdul Hakim Awal, a 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, has officially been recognized by the Guinness World Records (GWR) as the new record holder for the longest “tree-hug-a-thon.”

In a post on the X platform, GWR announced that Abdul’s record-breaking attempt took place outside the Kumasi Cultural Centre, where he embraced a tree continuously for an astonishing 24 hours and 21 minutes.

This feat surpasses the previous record of 16 hours set by Ugandan environmental activist Faith Patricia Ariokot earlier this year. Abdul undertook this challenge to draw attention to the critical issue of nature conservation in Ghana. As part of his commitment, he pledged to plant a new tree for every minute of his record attempt, resulting in a promise to plant 1,461 trees.

Throughout the entire 24-hour duration, Abdul was not permitted any breaks; he remained standing with his arms wrapped around the tree, demonstrating extraordinary endurance.

His effort was so remarkable that GWR has now classified the record as the “longest marathon hugging a tree,” allowing future challengers to take breaks—up to two hours per day—to mitigate the risks associated with sleep deprivation.

Abdul’s motivation for this challenge is deeply rooted in his personal experiences. Having witnessed the effects of desertification on his family’s hometown of Garu, he hopes to inspire a nationwide tree-planting initiative in Ghana.

He expressed his concerns, saying, “We know how trees, an essential resource which the entire human race depends on, are becoming scarce in Ghana. Though we have been taught about preservation of trees since the early years of our lives, the contribution from everyone is not as significant as it should be. This attempt for the longest time to hug a tree, to me, spells out an important task to preserve human life by preserving trees.”

Interestingly, Abdul is not the first Ghanaian to set a tree-hugging world record this year. Forestry student Abubakar Tahiru previously made headlines for setting the record for the most trees hugged in one hour, with a total of 1,123 trees.

In a related note, an individual cork oak tree in France also claimed a Guinness World Records title this year, standing as the world’s tallest cork oak tree at a height of 21 meters (68.9 feet).

  • Zongo lane fire erupts again after portion of affected structure collapsed

Zongo lane fire erupts again after portion of affected structure collapsed

The eastern part of the affected structure at the Accra Zongo Lane fire has just collapsed, causing a protracted fire.

Efforts are under by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officers to douse the flame.

According to the GNFS, no firefighter or civilian casualties have been recorded. Fire erupted at Zongo Lane near Rawlings Park in Makola, Accra, causing damage to several shops and likely leaving traders devastated on Sunday, September 1.

According to the Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex Nartey, the fire began as a small blaze but quickly intensified due to the inaccessibility of the area and the presence of highly flammable materials stored in many shops.

“The fire that started little has quickly spread as a result of inaccessibility and highly flammable materials found in the affected shops,” Nartey explained.

Firefighters arrived on the scene promptly and undertook a rigorous effort to control the flames. Despite their intense work, the fire caused considerable destruction before it was brought under control.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service. Authorities are currently working to determine how the blaze started and to assess the full impact on the affected businesses.

No one has proved that I did anything unlawful – Disputed Walewale NPP candidate

Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, the disputed New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Walewale, has expressed his dissatisfaction with a recent court ruling that nullified his primary victory and ordered a rerun in the constituency.

Despite the setback, Dr. Kabiru remains firm in his belief that he has done nothing unlawful throughout the electoral process.

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Kabiru voiced his disappointment with the High Court’s decision on Monday, September 2, which annulled the results of the January primary.

“I am in this contest. I was proposed by the people to participate in this contest. I never engaged in any act that would give me undue advantage. And up to today, they have not been able to prove that,” he stated.

He further emphasized his innocence, saying, “Even one single act that I did to procure undue advantage. Nobody has accused me of having done anything wrong. Except to say the politics of it.”

The January primary saw Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, narrowly defeat the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu, with 345 votes to her 338. The election was closely monitored, with heavy security presence and the participation of regional and constituency executives.

However, Hajia Lariba disputed the outcome, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court. She accused Dr. Kabiru, the party, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities.

In the primary, two other candidates, Tahiru Sham-Una and Jangdoo Mahama, received 145 and 1 vote, respectively. The NPP, acting as the third defendant in the case, initially sought to have it dismissed, arguing that Hajia Lariba had bypassed the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms.

The court, however, refused this request, and instead, in March, fined the party GH¢8000 while granting a plea for an out-of-court settlement.

Before the recent ruling, NPP supporters in the Walewale constituency had called for the intervention of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to resolve the ongoing dispute. They warned that failure to address the issue swiftly could jeopardize the party’s chances in the upcoming general elections.

Despite the court’s decision, Dr. Kabiru remains adamant that his conduct during the primary was above reproach. His supporters continue to rally behind him, questioning the need for a rerun when no unlawful actions have been proven against him.

  • What EC did wrong while compiling provisional voter register

What EC did wrong while compiling provisional voter register

The Electoral Commission (EC) has admitted to a significant error in compiling the provisional voters’ register for the 2024 elections, acknowledging that a technical glitch led to the inclusion of incorrect data.

During a press briefing on Monday, September 2, Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, addressed the issue, explaining the root cause and the steps taken to rectify it.

Dr. Asare revealed that the provisional voter register shared with political parties included both a “transfers voters list” and an “absent voters list” for each polling station. The transfers list was meant to capture voters who had been moved from one polling station to another, while the absent voters list accounted for those who had either transferred their votes or were involved in special voting.

However, the EC encountered a technical issue during the preparation of the 2024 exhibition, which mistakenly incorporated all transfers made since 2020. This error resulted in a higher-than-expected number of voters being classified as transferred or absent, raising concerns among stakeholders about the accuracy of the register.

Dr. Asare assured the public that the EC has corrected this anomaly and will provide the amended transfer and absent voters lists to the political parties.

“The final voters’ register for the 2024 elections will be both robust and credible,” he stated, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to delivering a transparent electoral process.

This clarification comes in the wake of allegations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency of the Central Region. The NDC accused the EC of inflating the voters’ register in collaboration with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming that over 3,000 names were added without proper authorization. Galahad Alex Andoh, the NDC’s Communications Officer in the constituency, voiced his party’s determination to resist any attempts at electoral manipulation.

The EC’s mishap also prompted a response from former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, who called on the Commission to rectify any inaccuracies in the voter register to prevent confusion during the elections.

In light of these concerns, the EC has reaffirmed its commitment to making all necessary corrections to ensure the integrity of the final voters’ register.

EC will lead Ghana into destruction if we aren’t careful – Nyaho-Tamakloe warns

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) actions, which he believes could destabilize Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking at an anti-corruption event at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday, September 2, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed grave concerns about the EC’s conduct ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“I am saying at the moment, the greatest threat to our democracy is the Electoral Commission, and if we are not careful, they will lead this country into destruction, mark my words,” he cautioned.

He highlighted recent actions by the Commission that he perceives as threats to the nation’s democratic stability.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, who has witnessed and been involved in coup d’états in Ghana, emphasized the seriousness of his warning by referencing his past experiences.

“I’ve seen coup d’etat in this country, I have been part of coup d’etat in this country, and I know what I’m talking about. I spent almost five years of my life in prison,” he stated, highlighting the potential dangers of the current situation.

He pointed to specific incidents, including the alleged unauthorized transfers of voters from one constituency to another, as examples of the EC’s mishandling of the electoral process.

“How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of others? These are facts,” he questioned.

This comes at a time when the Electoral Commission (EC) has admitted to a significant error in compiling the provisional voters’ register for the 2024 elections, acknowledging that a technical glitch led to the inclusion of incorrect data.

During a press briefing on Monday, September 2, Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, addressed the issue, explaining the root cause and the steps taken to rectify it.

This error resulted in a higher-than-expected number of voters being classified as transferred or absent, raising concerns among stakeholders about the accuracy of the register.

Dr. Asare assured the public that the EC has corrected this anomaly and will provide the amended transfer and absent voters lists to the political parties.

Final voter register will be credible after amending errors – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public that the final voters’ register for the 2024 elections will be both robust and credible, following the correction of errors identified during the recent exhibition exercise.

Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, provided this assurance during a press briefing on Monday, September 2.

Dr. Asare explained that the provisional voter register, which was prepared for the exhibition and shared with political parties, included a “transfers voters list” and an “absent voters list” for each polling station.

The transfers list comprises voters who have been transferred out of a particular polling station, while the absent voters list includes those who have transferred their votes and those participating in special voting.

However, during the preparation for the 2024 exhibition, a technical issue caused the inclusion of all transfers made since 2020, leading to a higher-than-expected number of absent and transferred voters. Dr. Asare emphasized that the EC has now corrected this anomaly and will distribute the amended transfer and absent voters lists to the political parties.

This clarification from the EC comes in response to allegations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency of the Central Region.

The NDC accused the EC of unlawfully inflating the voters’ register in collaboration with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Galahad Alex Andoh, the NDC’s Communications Officer in the constituency, over 3,000 names were allegedly added to the voters’ register without authorization.

Mr Andoh further stated that the NDC would resist any attempts by the EC to manipulate the upcoming elections and would take necessary actions to prevent electoral fraud. The EC, however, has stood by the integrity of the voter register, reiterating its commitment to delivering a credible and accurate final list.

The EC released the provisional voter register to political parties on August 19, following demands for timely access for review. Since then, the NDC has raised concerns about discrepancies in the document, including missing names and incorrect placements of qualified voters. The party has requested an emergency meeting with the EC to address these issues.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has also urged the EC to rectify any inaccuracies in the voter register to avoid confusion during the elections. The EC has responded by affirming that all necessary corrections will be made, ensuring that the final voter register reflects the true will of the electorate.

  • EC suspends Pusiga Electoral Officer over alleged illegal transfer of votes

EC suspends Pusiga Electoral Officer over alleged illegal transfer of votes

The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended the Pusiga District Director over alleged involvement in the illegal transfer of voters without their knowledge.

Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC, Samuel Tettey, confirmed the suspension, highlighting that the district director is considered the main suspect in this case. The EC has launched an investigation into the matter.

Tettey explained that voter transfers typically require the individual’s presence at the district office, where their biometrics are taken and a new voter ID card reflecting their new polling station is issued. However, in the Pusiga case, voters reported that they were unaware of the transfers, yet their names appeared on the Pusiga constituency register.

In response, the EC has established a committee to investigate the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that the photographs on the voter ID cards of the affected individuals were used to facilitate the transfers without the voters’ consent. Tettey assured that any EC officials found to have participated in the illegal transfers would be dismissed.

The incident was discussed during the 2nd Speaker’s Seminal Lecture held in Tamale, where Tettey also addressed the commission’s preparedness for the upcoming December elections.

The lecture, themed “Working Together, Rebuilding Trust for Free, Fair, Credible and Peaceful Elections: The Role of Stakeholders,” featured Security Consultant Professor Kwesi Aning and Imani Africa’s Senior Vice President, Kofi Bentil, as key speakers.

Both speakers emphasized the importance of collaboration among election stakeholders to ensure credible elections. Mr Bentil, in particular, criticized the EC’s perceived autocratic approach in recent years and urged the commission to engage more with stakeholders.

In response, Tettey stated that the EC remains open to consultations and welcomes recommendations that would contribute to successful elections. He reassured the public that the EC is committed to conducting the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in a manner that reflects the will of the Ghanaian people.

Some OMCs selling a litre of petrol for GHc14.16

Several oil marketing companies (OMCs) have started lowering the prices of petroleum products at their pumps, effective today, September 2, 2024.

Market analysts attribute the recent price reductions to a combination of factors, including the slowing depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar over the past two weeks, as well as a continuous decline in crude oil prices on the international market.

Crude oil prices have dropped from $82 per barrel last week to $76 per barrel as of September 2, 2024. Some analysts believe that if this trend continues and the cedi remains relatively stable against the dollar, consumers could see further price reductions at the pumps in the near future.

Among them, market leader GOIL is now selling a litre of petrol at GH₵14.16, reflecting a 6 pesewas decrease per litre and a 0.42% reduction in the price of petrol.

GOIL has also reduced the price of diesel, which is now selling for GH₵14.70 per litre, down from GH₵14.90. This 20-pesewa decrease represents a 1.34% reduction in the price of diesel.

Star Oil, the second-largest oil marketing firm based on half-year industry data, has followed suit by reducing its prices. The company is now offering petrol at GH₵13.65 per litre, marking a 10 pesewas reduction and a 0.73% decrease from its previous price. Diesel prices at Star Oil have also been lowered to GH₵13.85 per litre, down from GH₵14.02.

In addition, Star Oil is running promotions at select stations nationwide, where petrol is available at an even lower price of GH₵13.31 per litre, and diesel at GH₵13.57 per litre.

Energy analyst Dr. Yusif Suleman, in a recent interview with Joy Business, commented on the ongoing competition among OMCs, noting that consumers are becoming increasingly price-sensitive. He suggested that GOIL and Star Oil are likely using price adjustments as a strategy to maintain their market share.

  • Virgin Atlantic to resume operations in Ghana after 12 years

Virgin Atlantic to resume operations in Ghana after 12 years

Virgin Atlantic has announced new flights from London Heathrow, adding two new destinations Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Accra, Ghana to its network for summer 2025.

Virgin Atlantic will return to Ghana for the first time since 2013, with daily flights to Kotoka International Airport in the nation’s capital, Accra, from May 2025.

Virgin Atlantic suspended its operations between London Heathrow and Accra, Ghana, from 22nd September 2013 due to exceptionally high fuel costs, a challenging wider economic environment and an inability to operate morning arrivals from Accra due to scarcity of slots at Heathrow. The last flight from Accra to London will depart on 23rd September.

Next year, the airline will provide much-needed competition on the route, which currently lacks a choice of routes between the two countries.

The UK is home to the third largest Ghanaian diaspora in the world and the new service will respond to demand to visit friends and relatives. Around 10% of customers are also expected to connect through London onto Virgin Atlantic’s New York JFK service.

Launching on 1 May 2025, the daily service will operate on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft boasting the airline’s Upper Class, Premium and Economy Delight, Classic and Light cabins, as well as an onboard bar. Accra is expected to be a very strong cargo route and Virgin Atlantic will offer 30 tonnes of capacity on each flight carrying goods, such as fresh produce, between Ghana and key markets in the UK and US.

Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer, Virgin Atlantic, said “Riyadh and Accra join Toronto as new routes for summer flying in 2025 and we see huge opportunities to connect friends, relatives and businesses with our new services. We’re also delighted to build on our codeshare with SkyTeam partner Saudia, further strengthening connectivity in the region, and beyond, and bringing new benefits to our loyal customers.”

He added, “We look forward to launching these new routes in 2025, introducing the iconic, inclusive Virgin Atlantic brand, award-winning experience and our amazing people to new customers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ghana and Toronto.”

    Saudi Arabia

For the first time, the airline will launch a daily service to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The service aims to participate in the growth expected from Saudi Vision 2030. In 2023, annual trade between the UK and Saudi Arabia was worth £17.1 billion with an ambition to reach £30 billion of trade by 2030. Accordingly, air travel between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia is forecast to grow 24% between 2019-2035.

Riyadh is in growth mode, with an expanded downtown business district, F1 circuit, theme park, shopping and entertainment complexes. The city is also the perfect base to explore cultural attractions across this vast country including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of historical Jeddah, the gateway to Mecca, Al Ula, Al Ahsa, and the stunning Rock Art in Hima.

Saudi Arabia is world’s 20th largest economy, the largest in the Middle East with a population of 37 million. The market is expected to have a predominantly Saudi Arabian point of sale, which will see customers visiting the UK, as well as seamlessly connecting to twelve destinations throughout North America, on Virgin Atlantic and Delta networks, including Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, Boston and Detroit.

Alongside business travellers, the route will serve the ‘visiting friends and relatives’ (VFR) market, which has seen a fivefold increase in Saudis living in the UK between 2000 and 2018.

Flights to Riyadh will operate daily on the airline’s state of the art A330neo, the newest aircraft in Virgin Atlantic’s fleet, with the first flight departing London Heathrow on 30 March 2025. Virgin Atlantic will offer 30 tonnes of cargo capacity on each flight for companies looking to export and import goods, such as fresh produce and specialised goods, including pharmaceuticals, between Riyadh and prime markets in the UK and US.

Riyadh is also home to the airline’s SkyTeam partner, Saudia. The partnership will offer onward connections to Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, with further destinations within Saudi Arabia and to Bangladesh and China to follow as the airline continues to grow its strategic partnership with Saudia. Flying Club members will earn and redeem Virgin Points across Saudia’s flying programme, alongside SkyTeam partners. All Saudia operated flights from London Heathrow and Manchester to Riyadh and Jeddah are already marketed by Virgin Atlantic, and on sale across all sales channels, offering multi-daily departures between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Unauthorized lending platforms will be clamped down – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on unauthorized lending apps that employ unethical practices to recover debts, including the illegal publication of defaulters’ personal information.

Addressing participants at the MTN Ghana Mobile Money @15 Fintech Stakeholders’ Forum, Kwame Oppong, the Director of Fintech at the BoG, underscored the central bank’s zero-tolerance policy towards activities that destabilize the financial sector.

He made it clear that the Bank of Ghana is determined to root out these illegal operations, which have been associated with extreme consequences, including suicides by those unable to repay loans.

“It is a crime to threaten loan defaulters with the publication of their pictures and confidential data,” Mr Oppong stated firmly.

He warned that no product or service should be introduced into the Ghanaian financial space if it poses a threat to the sector’s stability or jeopardizes the livelihoods of individuals and businesses.

In recent months, a troubling trend has emerged where unauthorized lending apps resort to extreme measures, such as publicly shaming borrowers by sharing their images and private information.

Mr Oppong condemned this practice, questioning how such methods could be justified. “How is this a way of making a living—by putting people on suicide watch, threatening to announce to the world that they owe you?” he asked.

To combat these illegal activities, the BoG is collaborating with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other security agencies to take action against offenders.

“This is why the Bank of Ghana, in partnership with EOCO and security agencies, conducted a raid that led to the arrest of over 200 individuals, including foreigners,” Oppong recalled.

At the same forum, Shaibu Haruna, the Chief Executive of Mobile Money Limited, reiterated MTN’s commitment to enhancing safety measures and increasing education on mobile money fraud. He emphasized that building trust among customers is a top priority as the company continues to develop its services.

The MTN Mobile Money @15 Fintech Stakeholders’ Forum, held under the theme “Building Trust and Cooperation Among Stakeholders: How to Maximize the Impact of Emerging Technologies for the Promotion of Financial Inclusion,” brought together key players in the financial technology sector. The event focused on the impact of new technologies on the financial industry and the importance of strong regulatory frameworks to foster trust among users and stakeholders.

  • Bonsa River in Tarkwa invaded by galamseyers

Bonsa River in Tarkwa invaded by galamseyers

A recent video circulating on social media shows the destruction of the Bonsa River in Tarkwa of the Western Region by activities of illegal miners.

These illegal workers, per the video, dredge machines to extract gold sediment from the river.

The waterbody is presently brown in colour- highlighting the intense pollution currently taking place.

This video surfaced briefly after a footage shared by Media General journalist, Berla Mundi, highlighted the government’s inability to rid the country of illegal mining activities that continue to plague the country – destroying water bodies and taking human lives, as promised by President Akufo-Addo, who put his presidency on the line.

The footage shared on August 31, 2024, shows the Pra River’s water appearing deep brown, indicating high levels of contamination.

The video also depicted numerous chamfan machines—used for processing ore—lined up along the river, confirming their use by illegal miners.

The pollution of the Pra River due to illegal mining activities is causing severe repercussions that extend beyond the immediate destruction of the water source and the lack of potable water for nearby communities.

  • “Who are you?” – NDC’s Mintah Akandoh stopped from inspecting faulty Korle Bu elevator

“Who are you?” – NDC’s Mintah Akandoh stopped from inspecting faulty Korle Bu elevator

Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital prevented the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, from inspecting the facility’s faulty elevator that is presently hindering the smooth process of work.

At Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), elective surgeries have been suspended and emergency cases temporarily relocated due to persistent issues with the lifts at the hospital’s surgical block.

On Monday, Mr Akandoh visited the facility but was stopped by an official who questioned the authority in which Mr Akandoh was relying on to inspect the faulty elevator.

“Have we met? Who are you,” the Korle Bu official asked the MP.

The challenges at KBTH have severely affected the hospital’s operations. According to a statement from Professor J. E. Mensah of the Surgical Department, the issues with the lifts have hindered the movement of patients between floors in the surgical tower, directly impacting the ability to perform surgeries.

“Given the current situation, we have decided to suspend all elective surgeries until further notice. During this period, we will focus solely on emergency cases to ensure that critical care is not compromised,” the statement noted.

The statement also outlined temporary measures, including carrying out emergency surgeries at alternative locations within the hospital, such as the Ground Floor Surgical (Neuro), Accident Centre, Pediatric, and Gynaecology theatres. Patients requiring surgery will be admitted to Ward G, Ward N, Ward A, and Ward B.

KBTH assured the public that efforts are underway to replace one lift and refurbish the other, with the procurement process currently in progress.

The hospital says it is working to complete the necessary repairs as quickly as possible to minimize disruption and resume normal operations.

I am fit and strong – Napo quashes ill health rumours

Mathew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims by the opposition suggesting that the former Energy Minister is unwell.

Abroad-based podcaster Kelvin Taylor has been vocal about his concerns, suggesting that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo is not fit to campaign and should rather focus on his health over political ambitions.

In reaction to these concerns, Dr Opoku Prempeh has clarified that he is not unwell but in good health. He urged his supporters to disregard such rumours.

“No one should listen to them because I’m not sick, I’m fit and strong,” he is quoted to have said by Opera News in a report.

A Pro-NDC user on X (formerly Twitter) by the name Uncle Paa Kwesi has claimed that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has traveled to Germany for medical treatment.

According to the page, “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), running mate for NPP flys to Germany for medical treatment. Ghana is with you in our prayers”.

Although close sources within the NPP’s running mate campaign have refuted the claim, this X user has refused to back down on his unverified claim.

This assertion comes after some Ghanaians suggested that Dr Opoku Prempeh may be ill due to the recent change in his physical appearance.

Photos of the politician in recent times show a loss in weight.

  • How Ghanaian journalists busted activities of Asian ‘galamsayers’ in Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve

How Ghanaian journalists busted activities of Asian ‘galamsayers’ in Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve

Two Ghanaian journalists, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah and Kwame Appiah Kubi, along with their team, successfully apprehended three Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey,” in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve within the Samreboi district of the Western North Region.

On August 30, 2024, Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah disclosed that their presence in Takoradi was initially for unrelated business in an exclusive interview with a GhanaWeb journalist.

However, upon receiving information about ongoing illegal mining operations in the forest reserve, the team decided to take immediate action.

Afrifa-Mensah recounted the scene upon their arrival at the forest reserve, where the extent of environmental destruction compelled them to make a citizen’s arrest under Section 12 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act.

“When I saw the level of destruction they had caused, I decided to rely on citizens’ arrest. I arrested them and handed them over to the police,” he explained.

The operation was not without its challenges. Afrifa-Mensah mentioned that the culprits resisted arrest and even attempted to block access to the site by locking the main gate leading to the forest.

“They tried to sabotage the process by locking the main gate that leads to the bush, so we couldn’t get access to the place,” he said. However, the team, determined to see the mission through, used minimum force and managed to arrest the individuals.

The arrested Chinese nationals were identified as Li Zhengang (51 years), Li Derui (35 years), and Li Baosheng (55 years).

They were apprehended without any assistance from local security forces. Afrifa-Mensah questioned the role of Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited, whose premises are close to the illegal mining site. “Samartex, which is a company that deals with timber and has a football club, made noise about certain Akonta mining. How come now people have free access to your forest and mine without raising an alarm?” he questioned.

The journalists and their team faced further obstacles after making the arrests. Upon returning from the forest reserve, they discovered that the gate they had previously entered was now locked with chains.

Afrifa-Mensah described how they managed to bypass this hurdle. “We are militants; we have to move. If we decide to do something, nothing gets in our way. If you get in our way, you will be hit with something devastating. So, when we got there, I took out a pump-action gun and had to open the gate with a combustion,” he asserted.

The local Ghanaian workers involved in the illegal mining operation were spared, while the three Chinese nationals were handed over to the Asankragua Police Division Command for further investigation. Following their arrest, the men were remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Afrifa-Mensah noted that the suspects could not produce any valid documentation to justify their presence in the forest reserve.

“Upon inquiries, with their documentation, they could not provide any or show that they had been permitted to enter, so we handed them over to the police to investigate and prosecute them,” he said.

The site, located near the Samartex Timber & Plywood Company Limited, had been operating with both Chinese nationals and local laborers involved in the illegal activities. Superintendent Ntori of the Asankragua Division Police Command declined to provide further details when contacted, directing the news team to headquarters, where they are yet to receive additional information.

  • Transparency, integrity necessary in recovering proceeds of crimes – Dame

Transparency, integrity necessary in recovering proceeds of crimes – Dame

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has emphasized the vital role of transparency and integrity in the global battle against economic and financial crimes.

Speaking at the 41st Cambridge Economic Crime Conference at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, UK, held from September 1st to 8th, 2024, Dame highlighted the importance of collaboration and ethical practices in tracing and recovering assets gained through illegal activities.

Addressing a gathering of Attorneys-General, senior judicial officers, politicians, and prominent figures in law enforcement from across the globe, Dame underscored that the key objective in prosecuting economic crimes should be the identification and recovery of assets obtained through criminal means.

He argued that the success of global efforts to combat economic crimes depends on fostering cooperation between justice partners and ensuring that criminals do not retain the proceeds of their illicit actions.

“In my respectful view, plea bargaining should be grounded in a clear acknowledgment of guilt, especially in cases involving financial and economic crimes that impact public funds,” Dame stated.

He stressing the need for integrity in legal proceedings and cautioned against compromising professional ethics for the sake of asset recovery, warning that such actions could erode public confidence and the credibility of law enforcement agencies.

Mr Dame also discussed the challenges of tracing assets across borders, particularly in the context of Africa’s regional integration initiatives.

He noted that while the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents significant economic opportunities, it also brings new challenges for law enforcement, including issues related to corruption, money laundering, and environmental crimes. These challenges, he argued, require stronger international cooperation to effectively combat financial crimes and recover stolen assets.

“Law enforcement on both sides must work together to ensure that illicit funds are returned to their rightful countries of origin. International data sharing is crucial in the fight against cross-border economic crime,” Dame emphasized.

He further advocated for greater collaboration between nations to prevent criminals from exploiting legal loopholes and differences in regulations.

Reflecting on Ghana’s domestic efforts, Dame highlighted the importance of key legislation in promoting transparency and accountability. He pointed out that laws like the Economic and Organised Crimes Office Act, 2011 (Act 804), the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), and the new Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) have equipped institutions with the tools needed to trace and recover assets while ensuring transparency in financial dealings.

“The requirement to disclose beneficial owners and the verification processes serve as a strong defense against money laundering and corruption in general, ultimately boosting investor confidence in Ghana’s economy,” Dame remarked, emphasizing the significance of these measures in fostering ethical business practices and reducing opportunities for financial crime.

In conclusion, Dame reiterated that the driving force behind economic and financial crimes is often the pursuit of illicit wealth. By effectively tracing and recovering these assets, law enforcement agencies can disrupt criminal activities and make significant contributions to national development. He called for continued vigilance and ethical conduct in the global fight against economic crimes, asserting that transparency and integrity are crucial to ensuring justice and safeguarding the public interest.

  • Salah’s deal at Anfield to expire next summer

Salah’s deal at Anfield to expire next summer

Mohamed Salah has revealed that his contract with Liverpool is set to expire next summer, and there have been no discussions about a renewal.

The 32-year-old forward, who played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, hinted that this season could be his last at Anfield.

Speaking after the match, Salah reflected on the possibility of leaving Liverpool, saying, “I was coming to the game, I was saying, ‘look, it could be the last time’. Nobody in the club talked to me yet about contracts, so I was just like, ‘OK, I play my last season and see at the end of the season.’ I feel I am free to play football – we will see what happens next year.”

Salah’s comments have sparked speculation about his future, especially considering the Egyptian forward’s impressive form. He has already scored in each of Liverpool’s opening three games this season, further solidifying his status as one of the club’s most influential players.

When asked about Salah’s remarks, Liverpool manager Arne Slot downplayed the situation, emphasizing Salah’s current importance to the team. “It’s a lot of ‘if’.

At this moment he is one of ours, and I am really happy with him being one of ours, and he played really well. I don’t talk about contracts from players, but I can talk for hours about how Mo played today,” Slot said.

Salah’s current contract, signed in July 2022, made him reportedly the highest-paid player in Liverpool’s history, with a weekly wage exceeding £350,000. Despite this, Liverpool rejected a £150 million offer from Al-Ittihad for Salah last September, signaling the club’s commitment to keeping him.

Salah’s record-breaking performances at Old Trafford further underscore his value. He has been involved in 17 of Liverpool’s last 23 Premier League goals against Manchester United, with 11 goals and six assists. Salah’s ten goals in nine appearances at Old Trafford make him one of the most prolific visitors to the stadium in Premier League history.

Sunday’s victory over Manchester United propelled Liverpool to second place in the Premier League standings, trailing only Manchester City on goal difference. Reflecting on the result, Salah said, “A great result. Everyone knows the derby is important for the fans and the city. We need to carry on, and if you want to fight for the league, you have to win each game.”

Ayawaso West Wuogon women wail after Dumelo accuses Lydia of killing her husband

The Women Caucus of the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency has chided the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, over his recent allegation against the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Lydia Alhassan.

John Dumelo during a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” implied that Alhassan may have been involved in her husband’s death to gain political power.

His remarks came after NPP supporters taunted him with references to the “V8 saga” during his speech. Dumelo has since retracted his statements and expressed regret for his unfounded claims.

He said, “I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP.”

His comment has been met with criticism and disappointment by Women Caucus of the Ayawaso West Wuogon, who in black and red, wailed over the injustice done against the widow, Lydia Alhassan.

“We are wailing, we are crying, because today, John Dumelo has opened a wound, something we suffered five good years ago. For a man who was born from a woman to open his mouth to make such an utterance that a widow, single mother of five children who haven’t even attained the age of 18,” a spokesperson said.

  • Fuel prices to remain stable for next 2 weeks – IES predicts

Fuel prices to remain stable for next 2 weeks – IES predicts

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has forecasted that petrol and diesel prices are likely to remain stable over the next two weeks, offering some relief to consumers amid recent economic fluctuations.

However, Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) may see a slight increase in price, with a projected adjustment of around 2% in the coming days.

The IES’s projection is based on a combination of factors, including the recent depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and a marginal decline in the global prices of liquid fuels. According to the institute, the prices of gasoline and gasoil on the world market have dropped by 1.95% and 1.02%, respectively. In contrast, LPG has seen its price rise for the second consecutive pricing window, with an increase of 2.88% recorded.

“Following the marginal decline in the price of liquid fuels on the world fuels market for gasoline (-1.95%) and gasoil (-1.02%), the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has recorded its second consecutive increase in the past two pricing windows, presently rising by 2.88%,” the IES stated. The institute also noted the ongoing depreciation of the cedi against the U.S. dollar, which stood at 0.47% at the close of the trading window.

    Global Fuel Market Trends

An analysis of the global Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Platts data, which tracks petroleum product prices on the world fuel market, reveals a continued decline in the prices of petrol and diesel during the second pricing window of August 2024. Conversely, LPG prices have experienced an upward trend during the same period.

Data from the second pricing window of August 2024 shows that petrol was priced at $779.10 per metric tonne, diesel at $712.88 per metric tonne, and LPG at $559.95 per metric tonne. These figures reflect a 2.88% increase in LPG prices, while petrol and diesel prices declined by 1.95% and 1.02%, respectively.

    Local Fuel Market Performance

On the local front, the second pricing window of August 2024 saw Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) slightly reducing the price of liquid fuels. The price per litre of gasoline and gasoil dropped by an average of GH₵0.10, according to data compiled from OMCs operating in the local market.

The IES’s analysis of national average prices for the first pricing window of August 2024 indicated that petrol and diesel were sold at GH₵13.91 and GH₵14.40 per litre, respectively, while LPG was priced at GH₵15.10 per kilogram.

With the IES predicting stability in petrol and diesel prices and only a slight uptick in LPG costs, consumers can expect some consistency at the pump in the coming weeks, despite broader economic challenges.

  • Man Utd loses to Liverpool; Ten Hag mounts defense

Man Utd loses to Liverpool; Ten Hag mounts defense

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended his team after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford, insisting that it’s too early to lose hope in the season.

Despite the loss, Ten Hag remains confident that his side can still compete for silverware, dismissing any notion that quick fixes or “magic” solutions exist.

Liverpool dominated the match, with Luis Diaz scoring twice within seven minutes in the first half. Mohamed Salah added a third goal shortly after the break, sealing a comfortable victory for the visitors.

The defeat was particularly disheartening for United fans, who feared a repeat of the 5-0 thrashing Liverpool handed them in the same fixture back in 2021.

Ten Hag’s starting lineup included six of his signings, making the loss even more frustrating for the Dutch manager. Among them was his latest acquisition, Manuel Ugarte, a £50.5 million midfielder from Uruguay. Although Ugarte was introduced to the fans before kick-off, he was not eligible to play, having been registered after Friday’s deadline.

United’s poor start to the season has seen them slip to 14th place in the Premier League, with just three points from their first three games. However, Ten Hag refused to dwell on the negatives, stressing the need for patience and time to integrate new players into the squad.

“It is not like I am Harry Potter,” Ten Hag remarked, emphasizing that expectations of instant success are unrealistic. “For three players it was their first start of the season. Manuel Ugarte did not play one minute—he needs to build his fitness. Then we have to build him into the team. I am sure he will contribute to our team. It will take a couple of weeks, maybe even a month. That is the same for a lot of players.”

One of the key issues during the match was the performance of striker Joshua Zirkzee, who had a mixed game. While he managed to create United’s best chances, his finishing left much to be desired, with one attempt going wide and another brilliantly saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Matthijs de Ligt, another of Ten Hag’s signings, struggled at the back alongside Lisandro Martinez, while young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was often outplayed by Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch.

Tensions flared during Ten Hag’s post-match press conference when the manager clashed with a journalist who suggested that United had been making the same mistakes for two years. Ten Hag defended his approach, asserting, “I have a different vision, otherwise we wouldn’t win trophies and beat bigger opponents.”

Acknowledging the pain of the defeat, Ten Hag said, “I don’t want to talk about positives today. This defeat hurts for us and our fans. It is the third game of the season. We have to build a new team. We will be fine but it is clear we have to improve.”

One of the most controversial moments of the match came when Ten Hag substituted veteran midfielder Casemiro at half-time, after the Brazilian was at fault for two of Liverpool’s goals. Casemiro’s errors led to Liverpool’s first goal when he gave the ball away to Gravenberch, and he was outmuscled by Diaz for the second. Ten Hag replaced him with 20-year-old Toby Collyer in an attempt to inject more energy into the midfield.

Rumors circulated on social media that Casemiro had left Old Trafford early, but Ten Hag was quick to dismiss these claims. “He didn’t leave the stadium at half-time,” the manager clarified. “I met him in the dressing room after the game. I took him off because we were 2-0 down against an opponent like Liverpool. We had to take risks because we wanted to bounce back and needed players in midfield who can cover the ground.”

Despite the setback, Ten Hag remains optimistic about the season ahead. “He [Casemiro] won everything in his career. I am sure he will keep contributing to our team,” Ten Hag said, expressing his confidence in the team’s ability to recover and challenge for trophies as the season progresses.

My development agenda can’t be truncated – Suhum MP after ‘abandoning’ NPP

Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kwadwo Asante, has officially announced his decision to contest the upcoming December 7th, 2024 general election as an independent candidate.

This move follows his defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary earlier this year.

Asante, widely known by his moniker “Boafo,” lost the January 2024 NPP primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as “Protozoa,” by a margin of 179 votes. Protozoa secured 496 votes against Asante’s 320, making him the new NPP parliamentary candidate for Suhum.

Despite his defeat, Asante’s supporters have rallied around him, insisting that he is the preferred choice for the constituency. Over the weekend, during a Health Walk at Suhum Amponsah Market, Asante addressed his supporters and officially declared his intention to run as an independent candidate. He cited the overwhelming support from his constituents as the driving force behind his decision.

“I am the helper this constituency needs,” Asante said, emphasizing that his decision to contest is in response to the calls from the people.

“My developmental agenda for Suhum cannot be truncated abruptly,” he added, reinforcing his commitment to continue his work for the area.

The announcement comes despite efforts by high-ranking NPP officials, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, to persuade Asante to stay within the party. Sources indicate that Asante had previously given assurances that he would not run independently, but the events of the past weekend have upended those plans.

Tensions within the Suhum NPP have been simmering since Asante’s victory in the 2020 general election, which saw him unseat then-MP Fredrick Opare Ansah in the party’s primary.

The rivalry between Asante’s followers and those of Protozoa has led to several confrontations, with some resulting in violence. The Suhum Constituency has a history of political unrest, dating back to the 2008 election cycle.

Asante has since launched his independent campaign under the slogan “Oboafo Toaso” (Oboafo Continue), distributing posters and T-shirts to solidify his position.

His supporters believe that his independent candidacy will resonate with the broader electorate, who view him as the true representative of Suhum’s interests.

The address is being broadcast live on national television and social media platforms.

The upcoming policy announcement is expected to focus on critical areas such as infrastructure, energy, technology, and the growth of local industries.

At the heart of this vision is the ambition to build a strong manufacturing sector, which aims to create jobs and position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s industrialization.

  • Stop the bias, provide independent presidential candidates 2024 voter register – Abu Sakara to EC

Stop the bias, provide independent presidential candidates 2024 voter register – Abu Sakara to EC

Dr. Michael Abu Sakara Foster, a member of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), has expressed serious concerns over the inability of independent presidential candidates to access the 2024 voter register.

He argues that the current situation, where the Electoral Commission (EC) has provided the provisional voter register exclusively to political parties, unfairly sidelines independent aspirants in the lead-up to the general elections.

The EC had earlier released the provisional voter register to political parties on August 19, following pressure from various political actors who demanded timely access for review. However, Dr. Abu Sakara, in an interview on JoyNews, described it as “unfortunate” that independent candidates have been excluded from this crucial process.

According to Dr. Abu Sakara, it is essential for the electoral field to be levelled, ensuring that all candidates, whether independent or representing political parties, have equal access to critical electoral information. He called on the EC to rectify this imbalance by providing the voter register to independent candidates by Monday, September 2.

“Everybody should have the same opportunity for slotting in the ballot box,” Dr. Abu Sakara emphasized. He pointed out the growing public distrust in the bipartisan system, evidenced by the increasing number of independent candidates. “The Electoral Commission being the referee should ensure that it adapts its processes to give all the contestants a fair chance,” he added.

Since the provisional voter register was made available to political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has flagged several “very serious discrepancies” in the document, including missing names, incorrect placements of qualified voters on exception lists, and instances of disqualified voters appearing on the main register.

These concerns have led the NDC to request an emergency meeting with the EC, although the Commission has maintained that the voter register is both robust and credible.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has also expressed caution, urging the EC to address any inaccuracies to avoid confusion during the elections.

In light of these issues, Dr. Abu Sakara, who has formed an alliance with independent presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement For Change, insists that independent candidates must be given the same access to the voter register.

This, he argues, is essential to ensuring that all candidates can fairly participate in the upcoming elections without any bias or undue advantage for any particular group.

  • Ghana Police Service’s communication style not illegal – IGP defends

Ghana Police Service’s communication style not illegal – IGP defends

Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has firmly defended the current centralized communication strategy adopted by the police, dismissing appeals for its reversal.

The centralized approach has faced criticism from various stakeholders in the media, who argue that it hinders the timely and effective dissemination of information.

During his address at JoyNews’ event focused on media protection and freedom on August 30, Dr. Dampare emphasized that the Police Service’s communication practices are fully compliant with the law. He acknowledged the concerns raised but reiterated that the centralized system is not in violation of any legal provisions.

“At least no one has said the police has breached any law. We are within the law in all our actions,” Dr. Dampare stated. He further noted the importance of addressing the issue in a constructive manner, saying, “All these concerns are appeals, and with appeals, how they are made is how we receive them.”

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has been vocal in its opposition to the centralized communication mechanism. In a 2022 statement signed by its President, Albert Dwumfour, the GJA urged the Police Administration to reconsider its stance, citing potential risks such as speculation, misinformation, and disinformation.

Dwumfour reiterated these concerns at the event, expressing disappointment that despite previous assurances, the Police have not revisited their decision.

“We raised the issue again and received assurances that the matter would be considered. To date, we have received no positive response. We are once again urging the Ghana Police to decentralize information, thereby facilitating easier access to it,” Dwumfour asserted.

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure also weighed in on the matter, warning that the slow dissemination of information under the centralized system could lead to the spread of fake news.

“If we have to go to the Police headquarters to get that information, the fake news would spread, and by the time the national headquarters comes out with the truth, nobody may really remember what happened,” Azure cautioned.

Addressing earlier discussions on the subject, Dr. Dampare explained that the previous decentralized communication approach had become problematic for the service. He highlighted issues such as the release of incomplete or inaccurate information, which, in his view, was damaging the service’s reputation and creating public disaffection.

The decision to centralize communication was therefore taken after extensive consultations with regional commanders and Public Relations officers across the service.

UG champions replanting initiative to save endangered cotton tree

The University of Ghana is actively leading efforts to replant and conserve the endangered Kapok tree popularly referred to as the ‘silk-cotton tree’ by collaborating with the Forestry Commission.

The Kapok tree, scientifically known as Ceiba pentandra, a large tropical tree native to the rainforests forms part of their endangered tree species including Baobab (Adansonia digitata), Dawadawa (Parkia biglobosa), and Shea (Vitellaria paradoxa).

There are only four Kapok trees in the lush ecosystem of the Univeristy of Ghana, which is home to plant speciaies such as the Mahogany tree, Rainbow tree, Flamboyant tree, Moringa Tree, The Tree of Life, among others.

In an interview with The Indpendent Ghana, Senior Curator of Grounds and Environmental Health at the University, Mr Philip Quaye, stated that presently, the areas where the Kapok trees are planted are off limits to individuals without authorisation.

“They are highly protected. It is a soft wood, it is highly priced. We have seedlings from the Forestry Commission that periodically we will be planting,” Mr Quaye said in response to actions that will be undertaken to ensure the plant does not go extinct.

Kapok trees are among the tallest trees in tropical rainforests, capable of reaching heights of up to 60-70 meters. The fibers inside the seed pods are used for stuffing pillows, mattresses, and life jackets due to their lightweight, buoyant, and water-resistant properties.

Its wood can be used to make canoes, carvings, and lightweight furniture. It is believed to be the home of spirits or a playground for witches.

Despite the potential of the Kapok tree, Ghana has failed to have a vibrant cotton sector since it collapsed in the 80s, and efforts to revive it have so far been unsuccessful. The collapse of the cotton sector may also have affected raw material supplies to the textile sector .

To revive the sector, a Cotton Development Authority (CDA) has been established but is poorly resourced and with limited powers. Support for the cotton research sector is also poor, according to the Ghana Invement Promotion Centre.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to revamp the cotton industry in northern Ghana to create more jobs for the teeming unemployed youth if elected in the 2024 election.

“Cotton is the easiest cash crop to cultivate because it doesn’t like much rain and also doesn’t affect other crops’ cultivation. With a deliberate investment, the cotton industry, which has now virtually collapsed, will be revitalised to boost the economy,” the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said at a town hall meeting in Tamale in February 2024.

  • Health safety at risk as farmers feed crops with water from polluted Pra River

Health safety at risk as farmers feed crops with water from polluted Pra River

The pollution of the Pra River due to illegal mining activities is causing severe repercussions that extend beyond the immediate destruction of the water source and the lack of potable water for nearby communities.

Recent developments reveal that the contaminated river water is now being used to irrigate crops, putting public health at significant risk.

A cocoa farmer from Twifo Praso in the Central Region disclosed this concerning practice during an interview with TV3’s Berla Mundi. He explained that the scarcity of clean water has compelled farmers to use the polluted Pra River as their only water source for both domestic and commercial purposes.

The harmful chemicals from mining operations, which have seeped into the river, will now contaminate crops. These crops, which are to be used for domestic consumption and export, are being tainted with toxic substances such as mercury, arsenic, and lead—elements used in mineral processing that are dangerous to both aquatic life and humans.

A video shared by Berla Mundi on August 31, 2024, highlighted the severity of the pollution. The footage shows the Pra River’s water appearing deep brown, indicating high levels of contamination. The video also depicted numerous chamfan machines—used for processing ore—lined up along the river, confirming their use by illegal miners.

The impact on local water supply is dire. The management of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region has reported a significant disruption in water services to Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas.

Residents in these communities are facing severe shortages, with taps running dry for days and forcing them to endure increasingly challenging conditions due to the disruption of their once-reliable water supply.

Presently, there is pressure on the government to relieve local authorities within this area of their duties as part of the government’s commitment to combat illegal mining.

This comes after Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II destooled Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene for their involvement in illegal mining. Stakeholders want the president to emulate the Asantehene and sanction guilty government officials.

Fire breaks out at Zongo lane near Rawlings Park

Fire has ravaged Zongo Lane, located near Rawlings Park in the Greater Accra Region, leaving behind extensive damage to several shops and their contents.

The blaze reportedly originated from a small shop and rapidly spread, engulfing surrounding stores and sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky. The swift escalation of the fire prompted an urgent response from the Ghana National Fire Service.

Firefighters arrived on the scene promptly and undertook a rigorous effort to control the flames. Despite their intense work, the fire caused considerable destruction before it was brought under control.

As the smoke began to dissipate, it became clear that the fire had caused severe damage. Numerous shops were left in ruins, with valuable items such as clothing, electronics, and other goods completely destroyed.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service. Authorities are currently working to determine how the blaze started and to assess the full impact on the affected businesses.

You will hand over if the people decide they no longer want you – Speaker to gov’t elected officials

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a firm reminder to government officials who may be contemplating holding onto power beyond their term.

He emphasized that the Ghanaian Constitution unequivocally places power in the hands of the people, and their decision at the polls must be respected by all.

During an engagement with journalists in Tamale, Speaker Bagbin made it clear that those who express intentions to disregard the election results and cling to power will have no option but to step down if the people choose otherwise.

“Those who make utterances that they won’t hand over power will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people,” he stated emphatically.

The Speaker’s comments came in response to questions from journalists during a session with the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

The discussion focused on Parliament’s role in ensuring peaceful elections and addressing legislative challenges ahead of the December elections. Speaker Bagbin assured the journalists that Parliament is fully committed to supporting a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

This engagement with the GJA was part of a broader initiative, preceding a public lecture organized by the Office of the Speaker to commemorate 30 years of Ghana’s Parliament and the country’s democratic journey.

During his address, Speaker Bagbin also touched on the complexities involved in passing significant legislation, such as the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill.

He highlighted the extensive scrutiny, stakeholder consultations, and budgetary considerations that accompany the passage of such bills, underscoring the importance of considering diverse perspectives in the legislative process.

In his remarks, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, praised Speaker Bagbin for his unwavering support for press freedom and his commitment to ensuring that journalists can carry out their duties without fear. He also urged journalists to prioritize the country’s peace and contribute to a peaceful electoral process by reporting responsibly.

The Speaker’s comments come at a time when concerns have been raised by various individuals and groups, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society organizations, about veiled threats from certain members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to retain power at all costs.

Notably, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong has made several public statements suggesting the government’s determination to remain in power after the 2024 general elections.

Former Leeds defender Bamba dead at age 39

Sol Bamba, the renowned Ivorian centre-back who graced the fields of clubs like Leeds United, Leicester City, Cardiff City, and Hibernian, has tragically passed away at the age of 39.

Bamba, who began his professional football journey with Paris Saint-Germain, also had notable stints at Dunfermline and Middlesbrough. His career was marked by resilience and determination, particularly when he overcame non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2021 while playing for Cardiff City.

Bamba was most recently involved with Turkish club Adanaspor as a technical director. The club announced the heartbreaking news on Saturday night, revealing that Bamba had fallen ill before a match against Manisa on Friday and was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he sadly lost his life. “Our condolences to his family and our community,” Adanaspor expressed in their statement.

Cardiff City, where Bamba made a significant impact, described the news as a moment of “deepest sadness.” The club honored him as a “legend,” highlighting his immeasurable contributions both as a player and coach. “Sol was a hero to all of us, a leader in every dressing room, and a true gentleman,” Cardiff City stated, mourning the loss of a figure who was adored by fans and respected by teammates.

Leeds United, where Bamba served as captain from 2015 to 2016, also paid tribute, expressing their devastation at the news. “Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts,” the club stated, underscoring the deep connection Bamba had with the Elland Road faithful.

Bamba first gained prominence in British football while playing in Scotland for Dunfermline and later Hibernian. He then joined Leicester City in 2011 under the management of Sven-Göran Eriksson. Following Eriksson’s recent passing, Bamba had posted a heartfelt tribute, calling the Swedish coach “not just an exquisite person, but also the best coach I’ve ever had.”

After spells with Trabzonspor in Turkey and Palermo in Italy, Bamba joined Leeds United, where his leadership on the pitch was quickly recognized. However, it was at Cardiff City where Bamba left an indelible mark. Signed on a free transfer by Neil Warnock in 2016, Bamba quickly became a fan favorite. He scored on his debut against Bristol City and played a crucial role in Cardiff’s promotion to the Premier League the following season.

Bamba’s battle with cancer was a chapter that defined his remarkable character. In January 2021, Cardiff announced that Bamba was undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Despite the diagnosis, Bamba made an inspiring return to football just four months later, declaring himself cancer-free after undergoing chemotherapy.

After being released by Cardiff, Bamba reunited with Warnock at Middlesbrough, where he continued to display his tenacity on the pitch. His memorable season with the club included a crucial penalty scored during a FA Cup shootout victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in February 2022.

Bamba returned to Cardiff in 2023 as an assistant manager to Sabri Lamouchi, helping the club retain their Championship status. He was linked with the managerial role at Cardiff, having completed his coaching badges with the Football Association of Wales.

Bamba’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football community. Clubs like Dunfermline, Middlesbrough, and Hibernian have all expressed their devastation, with Dunfermline stating they were “shocked and saddened” by the news.

Payroll monitoring exercise, de-activation of ghost pensioners saved Ghana GHC895m – Minister

The Government of Ghana successfully saved a total of GHC895 million in 2023 through a nationwide payroll monitoring exercise and the deactivation of nearly 19,000 ghost pensioners from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) payroll.

This achievement was announced by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, during a news briefing in Accra.

The savings included GHC345 million recovered from a comprehensive payroll monitoring exercise conducted by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) across 120 public sector institutions. Additionally, GHC550 million was saved through the SSNIT’s deactivation of non-existent pensioners.

Mr. Baffour Awuah emphasized that these efforts reflect the government’s dedication to improving the management of public funds, particularly in the area of pensions. He highlighted the importance of these savings in strengthening the financial health of the government and supporting ongoing development initiatives.

“The government remains unwavering in its commitment to improving the welfare of workers while maintaining a peaceful labor front,” the Minister stated, commending various stakeholders, including Parliament, the Ministries of Finance, National Security, Education, and Health, the Ghana Employers’ Association, Organised Labour, and development partners for their collaboration in resolving labor-related issues.

The Minister also announced the development of the Ghana Labour Market Information System (GLMIS), an online platform designed to improve the services of the Labour Department. The GLMIS will provide valuable data on job vacancies, skills in demand, and training opportunities, helping to reduce job mismatch, unemployment, and underemployment. The system is part of the third component of the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project, funded by the World Bank, aimed at enhancing skills development and job creation.

“The GLMIS will enable employers to declare job vacancies and allow job seekers to upload their CVs for job matching, facilitating a more efficient labor market,” Mr. Baffour Awuah explained. He expressed optimism that this platform would support the government’s efforts to address challenges in the labor market and improve policy interventions for sustainable economic development.

West Ham loses to Man City as Haaland scores hattrick

Erling Haaland continued his blistering form with another hat-trick, leading Manchester City to a decisive victory over West Ham United at London Stadium.

The Norwegian striker’s clinical performance ensured the defending champions maintained their perfect start to the season.

Haaland opened the scoring in the 10th minute, latching onto a precise pass from Bernardo Silva and calmly sliding the ball into the net. However, West Ham quickly responded when Ruben Dias inadvertently turned Jarrod Bowen’s cross into his own net, leveling the score.

City regained control when Haaland struck again midway through the first half, unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner, leaving West Ham’s goalkeeper with no chance.

The Hammers, who had struggled to assert themselves in the game, found renewed energy in the second half and nearly equalized when Mohammed Kudus hit the woodwork following a swift counter-attack.

Despite a period of pressure from West Ham, they failed to seriously challenge City’s goalkeeper, Ederson. Haaland, who had been relatively quiet during the second half, sealed the win by beating the offside trap late in the game to complete his hat-trick and secure all three points for City.

The victory propels Pep Guardiola’s team to the top of the Premier League table, with a perfect record after three games. Meanwhile, West Ham find themselves in 14th place, having collected just three points from their opening fixtures.

  • Sack DCEs, MCEs in areas where galamsey is rife – Ken Ashigbey tells Akufo-Addo

Sack DCEs, MCEs in areas where galamsey is rife – Ken Ashigbey tells Akufo-Addo

A leading voice in the fight against illegal mining and a convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has sharply criticised Ghana’s leadership for its failure to address the widespread illegal mining activities that are devastating the nation’s water bodies.

He attributes this crisis to a lack of effective leadership across all levels of government, accusing both national and local leaders of neglecting their responsibilities.

Dr. Ashigbey’s critique extends from top-tier leaders down to District and Municipal Chief Executives (DCEs and MCEs), whom he claims have allowed illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey,” to thrive openly without adequate intervention.

In an interview on JoyNews, he said, “It’s basically leadership failure, all the way from the top to our local leaders. So the DCEs, the MCEs, the Police Commanders, the intelligence teams that are at the areas where these things are happening,” Dr. Ashigbey stated.

He questioned why those responsible for overseeing areas like the Pra and Tano Rivers, which have been severely polluted, remain in office.

“Why are they still at post? The regional ministers who are coordinating these DCEs, what is happening to them?”

Dr. Ashigbey urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to follow the example of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who has taken decisive action by destooling chiefs involved in illegal mining activities. He suggested that similar accountability measures be applied to local government officials who have failed to curb the menace in their jurisdictions.

He further highlighted the long-standing water pollution crisis that has burdened the Ghana Water Company, stressing the dangers it poses to the public.

Dr. Ashigbey expressed concern over the safety of even treated water, cautioning that it may still contain harmful metallic substances.

“Even you who is living in Accra and you think you are drinking some bottled or sachet water – how are we sure that those heavy metals are being treated out of them?” he asked.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Dr. Ashigbey called for renewed efforts from the media coalition, including legal actions against those who have failed to act.

“The time has come to start getting lawyers to help us, go to court and start suing people who have to take actions for the things that we are doing to ourselves and to the generation yet unborn,” he asserted.

  • Ghana is sick, we can’t take care of citizens’ health needs – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has declared that Ghana is in a state of illness due to its inability to adequately care for its sick population.

He argues that a nation that cannot address the health needs of its citizens is itself in poor health.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Gyamfi emphasized the NDC’s commitment to addressing these critical issues under a potential future administration led by John Mahama.

He revealed that the NDC plans to abolish fees for students with disabilities from levels 100 to 400, ensuring that no physically challenged student will have to pay fees under a Mahama-led government.

Gyamfi further highlighted the “Mahama Cares” initiative, which aims to provide support to individuals suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney failure. These individuals, he noted, often struggle to afford the expensive medications required for their treatment.

“Chronic diseases account for the highest percentage of mortality in the country,” Gyamfi stated, pointing out that many of these deaths are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He added, “A nation that does not take care of its sick is itself sick. The deaths recorded in this country are not covered by health insurance.”

Gyamfi explained that the ‘Mahama Cares Initiative’ Fund would work in tandem with the free primary health care initiative. This would ensure that all individuals, regardless of their health insurance status, receive free treatment when they visit community clinics, polyclinics, or health centers.

Through these measures, the NDC hopes to improve the nation’s healthcare system and ensure that no Ghanaian is left without access to the necessary medical care.
