  • Agric sector records positive gains despite coronavirus – GAWU calls for more attention

The General Secretary of the Ghana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Edward Kareweh has stated that the agriculture sector continues to be robust despite the existence of COVID-19.

Speaking to Graphic Business, he said the growth in agriculture is an indication that it would remain the most resilient in the near future.

According to him, the sector was able to withstand the shocks of the pandemic since it is largely insulated from external factors.

“If you look at the general agriculture production in the country, 80 percent of domestic production is in the hands of smallholder farmers, and these farmers are not largely exposed to the global economy directly. Their production is not dependent on the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain factors in the global economy.

“They have their own seed and have control over it, have control over their production needs, and depend largely on themselves to consume and market their produce. Agriculture is largely insulated from external factors,” he explained.

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) showed that the agriculture sector has for the second consecutive quarter emerged as the only sector which recorded positive GDP growth in the country.

The sector in the third quarter of 2020 recorded a GDP growth of 8.3 per cent. This comes after it recorded a GDP growth of 2.5 per cent in the second quarter.

“I want to thank the people of Ghana for maintaining their confidence in the leadership of the nation, especially the over 6.7 million people who voted for me. But in singling them out, I want to also assure the 6.2 million people who did not vote for me, that I will have their interests at heart and in mind in all that I do,” he noted.

The president said the time has come for Ghanaians to collectively uphold the peace and tranquility of the country after the 2020 polls.

He believes that the biggest lesson of the recently held presidential and parliamentary election is the shunning of actions that have the propensity of throwing Ghana into a state of disarray.

“We have to take the lead in bringing to fruition, the main teachings of this election which is that all persons of goodwill, no matter their political affiliation have to work together to secure the peace, prosperity and progress of our nation”, he stated.

He said the NPP, following the elections, possesses a renewed commitment to ensure the success of Ghana’s democracy noting that all hands must be on deck to forestall post-election tensions that may derail the economic and social development which has been achieved over the past years.

“This occasion enables us of the NPP to renew our commitment to the promotion of democracy and good governance in our nation and also recommit ourselves to work for the rapid development of our nation and its economy so we can bring prosperity to all the people of Ghana without discrimination. This is a tough task but one that is at the centre of this noble political tradition to which we belong and it is one that calls us to duty, service, and sacrifice”, he said.

Barring any last minute changes, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today file a petition against the 2020 Presidential result declared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, December 9.

The Herald is informed that the party’s lawyers led by Tsatsu Tsikata, will be focusing on the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensa to justify the numbers and percentages she mentioned, as having been obtained by the various Presidential candidates.

This is not to overturn the Presidential results as declared but to establish the actual votes obtained by the two frontrunners in the election; Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the NDC.

After the filing, Mr Mahama will address a press conference at a location yet to be announced.

The NDC Legal team is made up of Tsatsu Tsikata, Nana Ato Dadzie, Fui Tsikata, Dominic Ayeni, Tony Lithur, Dr. Bassit Bamba, Samuel Cudjoe, Marietta Brew Appiah- Oppong, Victor Kojoga Adawudu, Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, Dr. Abraham Amaliba, Dr. Rainer Akumperigya and Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region.

Some of the lawyers, hold the view that per Jean Mensa’s numbers, the worst-case scenario for the just-ended election was a runoff between Akufo-Addo and John Mahama, but not an outright victory for the NPP candidate.

In this regard, Jean Mensa, like Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan in 2013 in the election petition, will be the focal point of the NDC’s legal team, hoping to extract as much information from her as possible to buttress the claims by both mathematicians and statisticians that Mrs Mensa’s mathematics was wrong.

The many times she changed the figures she declared but kept saying the changes were not affecting the overall percentages obtained by the 17 candidates who took part in the race, has heightened the suspicions that something sinister took place behind the scenes ahead of the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as president-elect.

The Herald’s information from the NDC legal team is that, while some of the lawyers felt that the party should go with the audited results by focusing on various infractions noted at the polling stations and collation centres, others believe that the time allotted the hearing is too short to traverse that path, hence Jean Mensa should just be made to justify her numbers.

The lawyers pushing for the infractions to be placed before the Supreme Court judges insist there had been ballot box stuffing and over voting in certain parts of the country, particularly the Ashanti Region, and this must be dealt with by the apex court.

The group has results from over 18,000 polling stations to push their case, however, those against the infractions are arguing that the Supreme Court, had in the 2013 election petition, filed by Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obtsebi-Lamptey, made a determination on that, saying it is not enough ground to overturn the declared result.

For now, all attention is on Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, as to whether he would allow cameras into the courtroom as happened in 2013, when the then Chief Justice Georgina Wood, made history by opening the doors of the courtroom to TV cameras to enable Ghanaians to follow the proceedings presided by the now retired, Justice William Atuguba.

Meanwhile, a member of the NDC legal team, Dr. Amaliba, has intimated that the party would make a request to the Chief Justice Anin Yeboah to repeat the 2013 scenario.

Dr. Amaliba said such a request would be in the interest of fairness.

Chief Justice Wood, in 2013, allowed cameras into the courtroom, following a demand made by Gabby Asare-Otchere Darko of the NPP for a live broadcast of the proceedings of their petition contesting the 2012 general elections result.

Last Saturday, the NDC’s Lawyer, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, formally announced that the petition would be filed this week Wednesday, but The Herald has picked up a report that the party has decided to do so a day ahead of time.

Also on the bill, is the parliamentary results of the Techiman South Constituency, where the results declared in favour of Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsa, has been challenged by the NDC, which is demanding some documents as proof that the NPP candidate had won the seat at a place where its Presidential candidate John Mahama, beat Akufo-Addo with 52,034 as against 46,379 votes.

The NDC insists that its candidate, Christopher Bayere, won the seat by 293 votes, but the EC is yet to release the document to the NDC to clear its doubt over that constituency.

Dr. Amaliba told Citi News “We expect to be treated fairly, this is a national issue. We also expect that if we are able to make our case beyond a reasonable doubt, I am sure that the Supreme Court will hold that Nana Akufo-Addo, did not attain the required 50 +1 votes.”

“Indeed, we also expect that the petition will be telecast live. Any attempt to hinder that will create the impression that the hearing is not going to be fair, so we will put in the request to have it telecast live,” he indicated.

The NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, has refused to accept Akufo-Addo’s election victory.

He described the election results announced by the EC as “fictionalised.”

“I stand before you tonight unwilling to accept the fictionalised result of a flawed election,” Mr Mahama had said at a press conference.

“What we witnessed across the country from Monday 7th December 2020, exposed a deliberate plan to manipulate and predetermine the results of the election in favour of the incumbent candidate Nana Akufo-Addo,” he added.

The EC announced President Akufo-Addo, as the rightful winner of the December 7 polls on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, despite concerns raised by the NDC.

President Akufo-Addo won with 6,730,587 (51.302%) of the total votes cast.

Mr Mahama came second with 6,213,182 votes representing 47.359%.

  • Performance of police in dealing with crime has been abysmal – Expert

Security expert and lecturer at the Centre for Peace and Security Research of University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Yaro Kasambata has opined that the ability of the police to deal with murder cases in the year under review has been abysmal.

He says the general justice system has to respond to the needs of the people.

However, that is something Ghanaians lacked this year.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he noted crime will never be erased from any society, however, the ability of the security agencies to deal with them must be effective and efficient.

The insecurity in the country he stated has increased because of the failure of the police administration to properly investigate and deal with the offenders this year.

He admonished the police to put in measures to ensure that crime management becomes effective through training and proper gathering and preservation of evidence.

On the issue of intelligence gathering on planned crimes, Yaro Kasambata called for a collaboration between the police and other security agencies.

The intelligence gathering of our agencies he added is not the best and should be improved.

Using the Togoland invasion as an example, he said if our security agencies managed the intelligence well, it would have prevented the act of lawless.

He spoke against the political interference in dealing with crime, a situation he lamented emboldens party supporters to be lawless.

According to him, depending on who is power, the political government in power takes advantage of the system and allow people to go off the hook when they offend the law.

On the issue of the recent market fires, Yaro Kasambata said the approach to the problem has not been the best especially when the two major parties are blaming each other.

He called for a holistic approach in dealing with the matter irrespective of the political figures involved.

  • Let’s forgive and live at peace with others – Rev. Amfo-Akonnor

Reverend Dr Kofi Amfo-Akonnor, Koforidua District Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), has urged all Ghanaians to forgive and live in peace with others, to reflect the meaning of the birth of Jesus Christ, the saviour.

He indicated that Christmas signified the gift of forgiveness and entreated all to be kind, tender-hearted and forgiving towards one another just as God, through the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, forgave man.

The District Pastor who was delivering a sermon on the theme “Peace” at the Ascension Congregation in Koforidua, said begrudging others led to pain and bitterness which did not promote peace in society and the nation at large.

He said, in order to be at peace with God, human beings must be at peace with each other and called on all Ghanaians to reflect on the goodness of God despite the COVID-19 pandemic this year use the Christmas as an opportunity to make peace with each other.

He said God had been gracious unto Ghanaians and it behoved on us all to be thankful to God by forgiving each other and reminded Ghanaians that salvation and Christianity was not only about going to church but living a life devoid of greed and wickedness.

  • Police open investigations into lynching of alleged cat thief

Police are looking into the stoning-to-death of a middle-aged man alleged to have stolen a cat at Jerusalem, a suburb of Tema Newton in the Greater Accra Region.

Thirty-seven-year-old Abdullah Gedo, popularly known as Duley, was stoned to death by some unknown residents on Sunday dawn for allegedly stealing a cat with an accomplice who is currently on the run.

Reports said some young men who were on a community patrol chanced on the Gedo and the alleged stolen cat and started hitting him with concrete slabs and other materials, causing him bleeding to death.

The suspect was found in a pool of blood with the dead cat and concrete slabs beside him.

But as a follow up to the story, Acting Public Relations Officer of the Tema Police Command, Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, told Graphic Online that police investigators who arrived at the scene took photographs of the crime scene and later conveyed the body of the deceased to the Tema General Hospital where the body was examined and officially pronounced dead.

“She said the body was later deposited at the Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Chief Inspector Dzakpasu advised the public to desist from lynching and called on residents who witnessed the lynching or have any information about the incident to that contact the Tema Police on 0542719093 to assist the police in their investigation,” the Graphic Online report stated.

Residents say the stealing of cats has become rampant in the area, with almost 10 of such cases being recorded in the area every week.

However, police are yet to confirm if Gedo was lynched for stealing a cat.

Cat meat is a delicacy among a section of the Ghanaian population.

Cats are particularly reared and killed for food among families in the Volta and Oti regions of Ghana.

  • Politics and Chieftaincy polarisation retarding development – Paramount Chief

Kuoru Osman Deiwia Nankpa III, the Paramount Chief of the Gandawii Traditional Area in the Sissala West District, has identified political polarisation and chieftaincy disputes as major causes of disunity among Ghanaians.

The situation, he said, was retarding the development of the country including the Sissala area and urged the people to close their differences and forge ahead for development.

Kuoru Nankpa III made the observation at Tumu over the weekend during the annual Sissala Youth Forum congress, which was anchored on the theme: “Fostering Unity and Bridging the Infrastructural Gap in Sissala Land: The Role of the Youth”.

He said Chieftaincy and political polarisation has derailed the peace and unity of the people to the extent that, Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) and Unit Committees could no longer function effectively and that teachers could no longer instill discipline in schools.

“Key community stakeholders can no longer genuinely act to insist on the right things to be done for the course of educational development without being tagged of either doing the bidding of a particular political party or a chieftaincy faction.

“This negative trajectory must change in order to put our educational development back on tract, harness the potential of our very young ones and rescue the future of the Sissala land,” the Paramount Chief stated.

Kuoro Nankpa III therefore entreated the youth to actively play their role in the society to help achieve the development needs to the traditional area.

He appealed to the government to work to give a facelift to the deplorable roads in the area, as that negatively affected the economic and agricultural activities of the people.

“I have joined many of our compatriots in a number of occasions, called on government to work on our roads, including the completion of the Bolga-Tumu-Hain-Wa highway, which had always been on contract since time immemorial but never gets completed, and the Tumu to Gwollu, Gwollu-Jeffisi and Gwollu Zini road,” Kuoro Nankpa III said.

He advised the youth to hold leaders accountable to the people as that would help solve the current infrastructure challenges in the area.

Mr Issifu Napuna, President of the Sissala Youth Forum, commended executives of the forum for working to ensure that the forum chalked remarkable successes amidst the coronavirus pandemic, including supporting the Sissala East Municipal and Sissala West District Health Directorates with COVID-19 essentials to fight the virus.

Also, the Forum organised a Parliamentary debate for the Sissala East Parliamentary candidates ahead of the just ended 2020 general elections.

  • Seek regular antenatal care to prevent complications – Pregnant women urged

A midwife at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital (SMH), Ms. Vincentia Amponsah Nyarko has advised pregnant women to seek regular antenatal care from the early stages of their pregnancies to the delivery period to avoid complications.

She stressed that regular antenatal care would help to detect and prevent early complications that may occur during pregnancy and delivery hours.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, Ms. Nyarko reminded pregnant women and nursing mothers to ensure proper personal hygiene in order not to contract the COVID-19 disease and prevent its spread.

She asked pregnant women to frequently eat the right proportion of balanced diet to boost their immune systems to enhance the health of their unborn babies.

She said the SMH between the midnight of Thursday, December 24 and 0600 hours of Saturday, December 26 of the Christmas festive season recorded 10 deliveries of which four were males and six were female.

Ms. Nyarko explained the delivery of a set of twins (male and female), and four other male babies were through caesarean sessions.

The remaining babies were through normal deliveries. The ages of their mothers were between 16 and 40 and the babies were in good health.

At the Sunyani Regional Hospital, a staff on duty told the GNA that six males and four females were delivered within the same period.

Six of them were through CS while four were born through deliveries. The ages of their mothers were between 19 and 35.

  • NDC will not present 12 lawyers in court for election petition – Amaliba

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied claims that it will assemble 12 lawyers as it prepares to petition the Supreme Court over their stance on the outcome of the polls.

A member of the legal team of the party lawyer Abraham Amaliba told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the NDC will not assemble so many lawyers as circulated on social media.

The names of 12 persons that have come up as NDC legal brains are Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata, Lawyer Nana Ato Dadzie, Lawyer Fui Tsikata, Lawyer Dominic Ayeni, Lawyer Tony Lithur and Lawyer Dr. Bassit Bamba.

Others were; Lawyer Samuel Cudjoe, Lawyer Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Lawyer Victor Kojoga Adawudu, Lawyer Edudzi Kudzo Tamakloe, Lawyer Abraham Amaliba, and Lawyer Dr. Rainer Akumperigya and Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi.

But Abraham Amaliba says the list is not an official one from the party.

According to him, the party will only present a few lawyers like it did in 2012.

He insisted the polls were rigged in favor of the incumbent and the NDC will emerge as winners after the case is presented.

He said their evidence is watertight and Ghanaians will appreciate their allegations that the polls were rigged.

Abraham Amaliba was hopeful the petition will expose the rigging schemes used by the EC to declare the incumbent NPP winners of the polls.

Meanwhile, he announced the NDC will seek live coverage of the polls like it was done in 2012.

  • Desist from predicting election outcomes – Apostle Onyinah to pastors

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, the immediate past chairman of the Church of Pentecost, has called on the clergy to refrain from prophesying outcomes of general elections.

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah said this at the thanksgiving service organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Sunday, December 27, 2020, in Accra to thank God for a successful election.

Delivering a sermon at the Thanksgiving Service, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah noted that such prophecies have the tendencies of causing tension in the nation.

“Unfortunately, one of the women prophetess mentioned in the bible called Noadiah followed money and gave a false prophecy about one leader called Nehemiah. It is my plea to those who call themselves prophets in our country that they will exercise patience and wisdom and not to prophesy on who is becoming President and who will not, and not to prophesy on the evils that some people are going through, whether they are going to die or not but give us the mind of God that will grow our economy and grow our nation. May the Lord have mercy on us,” he said.

According to Opoku Onyinah, one of the offices which have been abused from ancient days to contemporary times is the office of the prophet.

He noted that there are true prophets, but the true prophet must be an epitome of wisdom such that his or her ministry must not bring confusion into a nation.

“Why should even GUM have over 100,000 votes to place third, it appears that some people were saying that they were tired of the politics that some members of the NPP and NDC were playing… The NDC also needs to take this into consideration. With the draw game that we have now, the Lord is saying the two parties need to work together,” he said.

  • Stop insulting my Ledzokuku folks – Okoe Boye replies Afia Akoto, others

It appears the brouhaha surrounding the inability of Dr Okoe Boye to win the Ledzokuku parliamentary elections is not ending anytime soon as the MP has urged friends within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put an end to the use of “unsavoury comments” directed at the Ledzokuku people.

This swift response comes after the party’s Deputy Communications Director, Afia Akoto and Charles Nii Teiko Tagoe, a presidential staffer, belittled the Ledzokuku constituents for voting out their hard-working MP.

In a Facebook post, these two leading members of the NPP took a swipe at Teshie people, describing them as backward thinkers who have little appreciation for development.

“So my Teshie people who voted for Dr Bernard Okoe Boye out, will they still go to the LEKMA on Mondays for the same Okoe Boye to attend to them for free? You let me end here before the “s” comes out of my mouth.” said Nii Teiko Tagoe.

In reaction to the said post, Afia wrote, “They no get shame bro. Do you know last week some went there just to see if he was really around? Backward behaviour”

But in response, Dr Okoye Boye appeared unenthused with the development and urged his NPP friends to exercise restraint with their “unsavoury comments”.

“I have read some news in the media that seek to draw attention to some unsavoury comments from friends within NPP, towards my Ledzokuku folks. I would like to urge all, who feel pained by my inability to retain the seat, to exercise restraint when it comes to expressing an opinion on the recent Parliamentary elections in Ledzokuku.” He wrote on Facebook.

He continued, “It is ok to be disappointed in the results but no need to be despondent. It is ok to be sad momentarily but no need to be sour. These are my people and I am their son. I am committed to making the world a better place and that commitment will remain sure with or without anticipated support from my own.”

He added, “When the game gets tough, the best way out is to lace your boots and not to be so occupied with the attitude of your opponent.

The reason for the season remains JESUS”

  • Cameroon authorities launch investigation into grisly road accident, death toll hits 37

Investigation has been launched into the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 37 people on Sunday morning in Cameroon.

  • In the Congo rainforest, the doctor who discovered Ebola warns of deadly viruses yet to come

Showing early symptoms of hemorrhagic fever, the patient sits quietly on her bed, wrangling two toddlers desperate to flee the cell-like hospital room in Ingende, a remote town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
They are waiting for the results of a test for Ebola.

The patient can only communicate with her relatives through a clear plastic observation window. Her identity is secret, to protect her from being ostracized by locals fearful of Ebola infection. Her children have also been tested but, for now, show no symptoms.

There is a vaccine and a treatment for Ebola, which have brought down the rate at which it kills.

But the question at the back of everyone’s mind is: What if this woman doesn’t have Ebola? What if, instead, she is patient zero of “Disease X,” the first known infection of a new pathogen that could sweep the world as fast as Covid-19, but one that has Ebola’s 50% to 90% fatality rate?

“Disease X” is hypothetical for now, an outbreak that scientists and public health experts fear could lead to serious disease around the world if and when it occurs, according to WHO. “X” stands for unexpected.

This isn’t the stuff of science fiction. It’s a scientific fear, based on scientific facts.

“We’ve all got to be frightened,” the patient’s physician, Dr. Dadin Bonkole, said. “Ebola was unknown. Covid was unknown. We have to be afraid of new diseases.”

Humanity faces an unknown number of new and potentially fatal viruses emerging from Africa’s tropical rainforests, according to Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, who helped discover the Ebola virus in 1976 and has been on the frontline of the hunt for new pathogens ever since.

“We are now in a world where new pathogens will come out,” he told CNN. “And that’s what constitutes a threat for humanity.”

As a young researcher, Muyembe took the first blood samples from the victims of a mysterious disease that caused hemorrhages and killed about 88% of patients and 80% of the staff who were working at the Yambuku Mission Hospital when the disease was first discovered.

The vials of blood were sent to Belgium and the US, where scientists found a worm-shaped virus. They called it “Ebola,” after the river close to the outbreak in the country that was then known as Zaire.

The identification of Ebola relied on a chain that connected the most remote parts of Africa’s rainforests to high-tech laboratories in the West.

Now, the West must rely on African scientists in the Congo and elsewhere to act as the sentinels to warn against future diseases.

In Ingende, the fears of encountering a new, deadly, virus remained very real even after the recovery of the patient showing symptoms that looked like Ebola. Her samples were tested on-site and sent on to the Congo’s National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) in Kinshasa, where they were further tested for other diseases with similar symptoms. All came back negative, the illness that affected her remains a mystery.

Speaking exclusively to CNN in the DRC’s capital, Kinshasa, Muyembe warned of many more zoonotic diseases — those that jump from animals to humans — to come.

Yellow fever, various forms of influenza, rabies, brucellosis and Lyme disease are among those that pass from animals to humans, often via a vector such as a rodent or an insect.

They’ve caused epidemics and pandemics before.

  • Niger: Vote counting underway, results expected in a few days

Niger began counting the votes Sunday from an election that is expected to lead to the West African nation’s first transfer of power between two democratically elected presidents.

The voting process went on smoothly on Sunday and were no reports of widespread disruptions.

The West African country, unstable since gaining independence from France 60 years ago, is ranked the world’s poorest country according to the UN’s Human Development Index.

Around 7.4 million people were registered to vote in the presidential ballot, which coincided with legislative polls.

“I expect the Nigerien president to put security, health, progress and democracy first,” Aboubakar Saleh, a 37-year-old launderer, told AFP in the capital Niamey without revealing his choice among the 30 candidates.

Issaka Soumana, a 52-year-old lorry driver, said he wanted change.

“Niger is not moving forward. Our country must rise,” he said, brandishing his ink-stained thumb to show he had cast his ballot.

President Mahamadou Issoufou, who was elected in 2011 after the country’s last coup in 2010, is voluntarily stepping down after two five-year terms.

“It is a special day for Niger which will experience for the first time in its history a democratic transition,” Issoufou, 68, said after voting at the Niamey city hall.

He noted that Sunday’s vote was the first in which he did not take part in three decades in the predominantly Muslim country.

At some polling stations in Niamey, voters saw to it that men and women formed separate queues to vote.

The frontrunner is Issoufou’s designated successor, Mohamed Bazoum, 60, a former interior and foreign minister.

“It is a great source of pride that this date of December 27 has been respected,” Bazoum said after voting.

He campaigned on promises of emphasising security and education, especially for young girls in a country with the world’s highest fertility rate — 7.6 children per woman.

  • Nigerian Prisons Service failed to release 65 soldiers granted presidential pardon in April – Lawyer

A senior lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, has accused the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) of failing to release 65 convicted soldiers who were granted a presidential pardon by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari had in April 2020 approved an amnesty for 2,600 inmates in different custodial centres, including the army officers.

    Femi Falana (SAN)

He said, “For instance, 65 convicted soldiers who have met the conditions outlined in the Presidential Amnesty granted to certain categories of prison inmates in April 2020 are still languishing in prison custody. There were 66 of them but one of has been released from prison custody. No reason has been adduced by the prison authorities for not releasing the others.”

Falana, while reacting to the release of six convicts repatriated from Thailand to complete their prison terms in Nigeria but subsequently held in Kirikiri Maximum Prison many years beyond their release dates, called for a comprehensive audit of all inmates in the nation’s correctional centres.

The released inmates are Azukaeme Henry Ejikeme, George Chibuike Onyeama, Kennedy Tanya, Yakubu Yahuza Mohammed, Mrs Gloria Ogbonna and Wasiu Amusan, alias John Smith.

He said, “Sometime in June 2020, we we were contacted by eight Nigerians who were convicted in Thailand and transferred to Nigeria on October 2, 2012 under a Prison Exchange Bilateral Programme. They alleged that they had been abandoned in the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre after they had been granted Royal Pardon by the Thai King. We confirmed the allegation and decided to launch a legal battle for their release from prison custody.

“On July 2, 2020 our law firm requested the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Godfrey Onyeama, to direct the Nigerian Embassy in Thailand to furnish us with the warrant for the release of the convicts. The minister did and the embassy procured and sent six warrants to Nigeria. The warrants were promptly forwarded to us.

“On August 25, we wrote to the Honourable Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, urging him to direct the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre to release the convicts from custody. As the request was subjected to bureaucratic hiccup we were compelled to file six applications at the Federal High Court for the immediate and unconstitutional release of the convicts. Even though the case has been adjourned to January 25, 2021 for definite hearing, the Minister of Interior granted our request last week for the release of the convicts. Accordingly, they were released on December 26, 2020. We are pursuing the case of the remaining two convicts.

“It is unfortunate that the convicts have been detained illegally since 2017 when the Thai King granted them amnesty. A few months ago, we also secured the release of an awaiting trial inmate who was charged with armed robbery and abandoned in the same correctional centre. The legal advice rendered by the Attorney-General of Lagos State to the effect that he had no case to answer, received by the police six years earlier, was not transmitted to the magistrate’s court that had remanded him in prison custody.

“Both cases call for a comprehensive audit of all inmates in the nation’s correctional centres.”

  • Maurice believes Jeremy Doku can follow in Juninho and Rai’s footsteps

Sports Director of Stade Rennais, Florian Maurice is confident Jeremy Doku can follow in the footsteps of legends Juninho and Rai.

“He got his apartment back a week ago. We are always in a hurry with the recruits, but I know that for some, it takes three, four, five, six months. And I have the example of Rai in Paris or Juninho in Lyon, where it took a year for them to perform.”

“I don’t want to talk about officiating because if I voice out what is in me, I will be paying GH¢5,000 to the GFA,” he told StarTimes in a post-match interview.

“I don’t know the crime Medeama has committed against the referees. Officiating both home and away hasn’t been good for us.”

  • Akufo-Addo thinks Ghanaians are imbeciles NDC MP

Member of Parliament for Builsa South Constituency in the Upper East Region Dr Clement Apaak is incensed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently described the just-ended elections as free, fair, transparent and peaceful.

President Akufo-Addo has described the December 7 elections as such in his Christmas message to Ghanaians.

But Dr Apaak of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has rejected results of the polls, said the president may be taking Ghanaians for fools.

“Well if true, he must think Ghanaians are imbeciles!,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

“How could an election that saw the killing of citizens, Akufo-Addo military/vigilante raids on collation centres, attacks on NDC MPs elect, padding of votes for Akufo-Addo and reducing JMs votes at regional collation centres, the changing of Presidential results 6 times, be described as such?” he quizzed.

    Find his write-up below:

Merry Christmas Is it true that Mr. Akufo-Addo described the 2020 elections as transparent, free, fair, credible and safe in his Xmas message? Well if true, he must think Ghanaians are imbeciles!

How could an election that saw the killing of citizens, Akufo-Addo military/vigilante raids on collation centres, attacks on NDC MPs elect, padding of votes for Akufo-Addo and reducing JMs votes at regional collation centres, the changing of Presidential results 6 times, be described as such?

The 2020 elections were NOT transparent, free, fair, credible and safe! The outcome of the 2020 elections are NOT credible, neither were the processes leading to the outcome transparent, free, fair and safe.

Jesus stood up against injustice! Jesus challenged exploitative temple practices! Jesus preached fairness and equity. Jesus would not accept fictionalised results of a flawed election.

    Merry Christmas!

  • Gazette of Hohoe Parliamentary results will not affect Court’s Order

Lawyer Nelson Kporha, Counsel for the applicants in the Hohoe Parliamentary election injunction case, says although the Electoral Commission (EC) has gazetted the Hohoe Parliamentary results it would not have any consequence on the restraining order from the Ho High Court.

He said restraining the EC from gazetting Hohoe MP-elect, John Peter Amewu was just one of the reliefs, disclosing that they were aware of the gazette before going to Court.

Mr Kporha, who is one of the Counsel’s for applicants, secured an interim injunction restraining the EC from gazetting John-Peter Amewu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Hohoe.

Meanwhile, Ghana News Agency’s (GNA) checks revealed that the Hohoe Constituency election was gazetted by the EC on Tuesday.

Mr Kporha said the EC’s gazette was just “a presumption of elections,” which is a periodical publication that has been authorised to publish publicly or legal notices, usually established by statutes or official action, could be legally nullified, therefore it would not have any consequences on the order they sought from the court.

He said “we are not bothered by the gazette,” we have other reliefs or orders that could make our case still hold.

Mr Kporha said to restrain the respondents, especially the MP-elect from presenting himself as such between January 7 to January 2025, still is legal before the law.

He said another is the availing himself to be sworn-in as Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency or holding himself as such.

A Ho High Court on Wednesday granted an interim injunction restraining the EC from gazetting John Peter Amewu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament-elect for Hohoe.

The Court presided over by Justice Mr George Buadi granted an ex parte application filed by Professor Margaret Kweku, National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Hohoe Constituency, Mr Simon Allan Opoku-Mintah, Mr John Kwame Obimpeh, Mr Godfred Koku Kofie and Mr Felix Quarshie.

The respondents in the case are the EC, Mr Wisdom Kofi Akpakli Hohoe Municipal EC officer, Mr Amewu and the Attorney-General.

The Court held that the EC be restrained from seeking to gazette the MP-elect with the order lasting for 10 days from Wednesday.

The Court also ordered the MP-elect from presenting himself to be sworn-in as the MP for Hohoe Constituency or holding himself as such.

The Assembly Press, a state-owned publishing company has indicated that it is ready to make copies of the gazetted 2020 parliamentary election results to the public but must be on the request of the Electoral Commission (EC).

David Asante, the Managing Director of Assembly Press told Joy News in a report monitored by GhanaWeb that his outfit has completed work on the document but is awaiting the permission of the EC to execute distribution.

He explained: “Tuesday is the next working day, we will make it available.”

David Asante hinted that the Assembly Press will ensure that copies are uploaded onto its website.
