  • Kaneshie market on fire

A portion of the Kaneshie Central Market in Accra is reported to be on fire.

It is unknown what the cause of the inferno is but this comes a few days after the Kantamanto market in the Central Business District of Accra was gutted under strange circumstances.

Some of the traders expressed suspicion that it could be a case of arson and, so, called for thorough investigations into the disaster.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been called to the scene and the situation is calm, 3news.com can confirm.

The fire at the Kaneshie market comes after similar incidents at the Koforidua market in the Eastern Region and already mentioned Kantamanto market.

The Ashanti Regional Command of GNFS, DOIII Desmond Ackah, had told Akoma FM over the week that the Service has picked intelligence that some persons are masterminding to set fire at markets, government buildings and public structures just to destabilise and to displace business entities for reasons best known to them.

  • Hung parliament bad for Ghana, it will affect multinational agreements Joe Jackson

A financial analyst, Joe Jackson has said Ghana does not need a hung parliament, a parliament in which no political party has enough seats to secure an overall majority.

Otherwise, he said, it will have dire repercussions on multinational contractual agreements that the government will need the legislature to approve.

He explained that there is going to be extreme partisanship associated with debates on such contracts with the opposition party most likely rejecting all the deals in an attempt to create problems for the government and make it unpopular.

The Chief Operations Officer of Dalex Finance added that these contracts may not be bad for the country but given the polarized nature of the country and the extreme partisanship with which things are looked at in Ghana, those deals are likely to be thrown out of the window.

Barring any litigation which could alter the parliamentary results of the just-ended elections, Ghana is going to have, for the first time, a hung parliament.

At the moment, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) each control 237 seats in parliament. There is one independent Member of Parliament.

Mr. Jackson said this is not what Ghana needs.

“We have got to take some hard decisions. We have got to call these companies and sit at the table to renegotiate.”

“This can be partisan, we have got to take hard decisions about how to balance infrastructure and consumption, we are going to take hard decisions about how to put up stimulus to deal with Covid-19 effect, we got to take hard decisions about our debt and where we are going. Truly a hung parliament may not be what we need,” said.

According to him, the police have commenced a probe into the violent incidents in places such as Techiman and Savelugu.

“The EC official was grabbed and the operatives there had to step in [at some polling stations]. They fired warning shots. Our investigations will find out who really did that,” he stated.

During the elections, at least six persons lost their lives due to the violence.

Mr. Dery insisted that, “The security operatives, did what they did within the standard operating procedures, and it would be recalled that even in any case there is injury or death, unfortunately, there are investigations.”

There were 61 recorded cases of electoral and post-electoral violence across the country.

Twenty-one of the incidents were true cases of electoral violence, six of which involved gunshots, according to the police.

Municipal Chief Executive for Kpone Katamanso, Solomon Tettey Appiah has strongly refuted accusations that he campaigned against Hopeson Adorye, the parliamentary candidate for Kpone Katamanso on the ticket of the NPP in the just ended elections.

Responding to the allegations leveled against him by the defeated NPP Candidate on the “Platform show” on Peace FM, the MCE denied all, saying his contribution to the campaign was more than any MCE did for his candidate.

He told the host that since his appointment as MCE he has never turned his back on the party and wonders why Hopeson wants to tarnish his image.

He further revealed that irrespective of Hopeson not giving him a role in his campaign, he continued to resource the party and the candidate and did everything possible to help win the seat including fueling the campaign cars of the candidate from January to November, sponsoring the only health walk organized by the party during the electioneering campaign.

He also supplied the party and candidate with 9000 LED bulbs to be shared during the house to house campaign, distributed items such as sewing machines, machetes, wellington boots, hand sanitizers, face masks, industrial driers, hand driers, cutting machines, sterilizers and motorbikes to the candidate and the party, supplied football jerseys and footballs to youth groups and local football teams at the request of the candidate, recruited 120 volunteers from the Middle and Southern belts and provided them with logistics for house to house campaign.

  • Coronavirus: Global tourism falls by more than 70% due to pandemic – UNWTO

According to the latest tourism data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), destinations welcomed 900 million fewer international tourists between January and October when compared with the same period of 2019.

This translates into a loss of US$935 billion in export revenues from international tourism, more than 10 times the loss in 2009 under the impact of the global economic crisis.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Since the start of this crisis, UNWTO has provided governments and businesses with trusted data showing the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global tourism.

Even as the news of a vaccine boosts traveller confidence, there is still a long road to recovery. We thus need to step up our efforts to safely open borders while supporting tourism jobs and businesses. It is ever clearer that tourism is one of the most affected sectors by this unprecedented crisis.”

Based on the current evidence, UNWTO expects international arrivals to decline by 70% to 75%for the whole of 2020.

In this case, global tourism will have returned to levels of 30 years ago, with 1 billion fewer arrivals and a loss of some US$ 1.1 trillion in international tourism receipts.

This massive drop in tourism due to the pandemic could result in an economic loss of US$ 2 trillion in world GDP.

Travel restrictions continue to weigh on the recovery

Asia and the Pacific, the first region to suffer the impact of the pandemic and the one with the highest level of travel restrictions to date, saw an 82% decrease in arrivals in the first ten months of 2020.

The Middle East recorded a 73% decline, while Africa saw a 69% drop. International arrivals in both Europe and the Americas declined by 68%.

Europe recorded smaller decreases of 72% and 76% in September and October compared to other world regions, following the slight though short-lived recovery in the summer peak months of July and August.

The resurgence of the virus across the region has led to the reintroduction of some forms of travel restrictions. However, Europe is the region in which more destinations (91% as of 1 November 2020) have eased such restrictions, mainly among Schengen Member States.

At the other end of the spectrum, Asia and the Pacific continued to record declines of nearly 100% in September and October, reflecting the ongoing closure of borders in China and other major destinations in the region.

The Americas has seen a gradual improvement since June with comparatively lower decreases in international arrivals through October. This reflects the reopening of many destinations in the region, including small island developing states in the Caribbean.

Secretary-General Pololikashvili adds: “A coordinated approach to easing and lifting restrictions on travel whenever is it safe to do so l is essential. This will not only open destinations up to tourism again, but clear and consistent rules between countries will go a long way towards building back trust in international travel and boosting consumer confidence.”

Demand remains weak overall despite a slight improvement in some markets
Data on international tourism expenditure continues to reflect very weak demand for outbound travel. However, some large markets such as the United States, Germany and France have shown some signs of recovery in the recent months. Furthermore, demand for domestic tourism continues to grow in some markets, including both China and Russia.

Looking ahead, the announcement of a vaccine and the start of vaccination are expected to gradually increase consumer confidence. At the same time, a growing number of destinations are easing or lifting restrictions on travel.

According to the latest research from UNWTO, the proportion of closed destinations has dropped from 82% in late April 2020 to 18% in early November (expressed in percentage of international arrivals).

The extended scenarios for 2021-2024 presented by the United Nations specialized agency for tourism point to a rebound by the second half of 2021. Nonetheless, a return to 2019 levels in terms of international arrivals could take between two-and-a-half and four years.

  • Farmers call for intervention to improve yield – GTLC

Farmers in five regions in Northern Ghana have appealed to government and other stakeholders to design more effective interventions to enable them to improve on crop yields.

The farmers further called for a ban on tomato importation and revisit initial plans to revamp tomato factories in the country, subsidise the cost of farm inputs and extend the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to cover all year round.

The farmers’ needs were contained in the Agro Policy Performance Barometer Report (APPBR 2019) of the Ghana Trade and Livelihood Coalition (GTLC), and was presented at a policy dialogue on gender responsiveness to the Planting for Food and Job programme in Tamale.

It brought together stakeholders in Agriculture from the Northern, Savannah, North East, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

The farmers further called for direct government consultancy, for proper implementation of Agriculture policies, including; investments in the Agriculture sector and the early release of subsidised fertilizers.

Mr Ibrahim Akalbila, Coordinator of Ghana Trade and Livelihood Coalition (GTLC), said the report showed that women farmers had little access to information about government’s Agricultural policies as well as the use of improved seeds and subsidised fertilizers.

He reiterated that, there was significant disparities between women and men in accessing information on improved seeds, and it was important to advocate gender responsiveness in the Planting for Food and Jobs policy.

Mr Akalbila said there was an improvement in the delivery of fertilizer to farmers, however, there was the need to do more to improve on the PFJ system to make it more impactful.

Hajia Hawa Musah, the Northern Regional Director of Agriculture, advocated collaboration from Non-Governmental Organisations, Civic Society Organisations and the media in changing the attitude of peasant farmers to appreciate the effects of climate change and the need for them to consider including; practices that would improve on the environment as well as sensitise them to adopt strategies to avoid the practice of defaulting in loan payments.

The GTLC since 2012 has conducted surveys annually on the implementation of Agriculture policies in Ghana, assessing their implementation and effects on beneficiaries.

  • Appoint technocrats, ‘real patriots’- Dr Antwi-Danso advises Akufo-Addo

Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, Dean of Armed Forces Command and Staff College, has advised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to consider appointing technocrats with knowledge in governance in his next government.

That, he said, would promote good governance and pragmatism to consolidate his legacy and gains in the first term of his administration.

Dr Antwi-Danso, also an International Affairs Expert, gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

He said, “Considering the nature of the 2020 Election results and the kind of Parliament we will have in terms of numbers and complexity…,
What President Akufo-Addo can do to consolidate his legacy is to bring on board more technocrats and people who understand governance to promote issue-based governance system.

“The kind of bickering, polemics and partisan nature of our politics should give way to consensus building and pragmatism”.

Dr Antwi-Danso, added, ” We need people who are forward-looking, real patriots and love Ghana, and not people who only shout because of their political parties’ interest.

“And when the positive result begins to show, it will shape our democracy and Ghana will be the ultimate beneficiary”.

He underscored the need to allow state institutions to work according to the remit of the law and refrain from tagging them with political colours.

Dr Antwi-Danso said appointment of heads of state institutions should also not be conterminous with the tenure of governments so that they could continue to operate even after a particular administration exited power.

Over 13 million Ghanaians on Monday, December 7, 2020 elected a President and 275 parliamentarians for a four-year term, beginning, January 07, 2021.

Incumbent President, Akufo-Addo was elected as the eighth President of the Fourth Republic after the Electoral Commission (EC) declared he got 51.3 per cent of the total valid votes cast, beating the main opposition leader and former President John Dramani Mahama, who the EC said had 47.4 per cent of total valid votes.

Mr Mahama refused to concede defeat, describing the election results as “flawed”.

Meanwhile, domestic and international election observer missions described the electoral process as free, fair and transparent.

  • GUTA laments high cost of borrowing for businesses in Ghana

The President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Dr Joseph Obeng has lamented the high cost of borrowing in Ghana.

The situation he said if not addressed by the government as a matter of priority, would edge out Ghanaian businesses by their competitors.

Speaking on Eye on Port, the GUTA President said the government should urgently compel the mainstream commercial banks to reduce loan rates, or risks having Ghanaian businesses lose out in the competition when Africa commences its free market project.

“Government has done a lot by bringing down the base rate but it is not trickling down on the commercial rates, and that is difficult for us to understand why the gap is too big,” he complained.

Dr Obeng said the banks usually explained that the high-interest rates are due to the higher risks associated with the failure of local business in honouring repayments of loans.

But, he opined that such excuse was not tenable since it is the responsibility of banks to do the due diligence needed before loan disbursements.

He said if the government failed to set in place a compelling mechanism for banks to apply flexible interest rates for businesses, it should consider the alternative of setting up parallel banks that would give out subsidised loans to support businesses.

“Government should, if possible introduce a parallel bank which would subsidise credit. So that we would be able to go into industries,” he urged.

Dr Obeng opined that the intervention by the government would alleviate the plight of businesses in financing their trade, and would go a long way to give local manufacturers the financial boost needed to augment production.

The seasoned trader explained that the “seeming banking crisis in 2018” coupled with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively affected many local traders making it the more justified for government to intervene with a drastic alleviation measure.

“Recent events have rendered many businesses challenged, and most of them are on the verge of bankruptcy,” he said.

“The stimulus package that was introduced by government which was originally intended for about 200,000 people, at the end of the day, over 850,000 people subscribed to it. It shows how much people need credit to do their business,” he added.

He lamented that currently, Ghanaians go as far as reaching out to their business partners and families overseas to access loans in such countries because of their lower rates.

He emphasised that with the advent of the Continental Free Trade Area, which is intended to promote the trading and consumption of locally produced goods, if the issue of the cost of borrowing is not addressed, the effort would be futile.

“If you import from outside, suppliers there are getting their credit for 3-5 percent, and here our credit cost is 23 percent. It means that Continental Free Trade or not, they have an advantage of about 20 percent to edge you out, even if duties are not demanded from you,” the GUTA President articulated.

  • Pay more attention to Christmas fires – GNFS cautions public

The Central Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on the public to religiously observe fire safety precautions before, during, and after the Christmas festivities.

The Service described the month of December as the peak period for fire outbreaks following the onset of harmattan and so the public should be wary and help prevent fire incidents during the Yuletide and beyond.

Divisional Office (DO) III, Abdul Wasiu Hudu, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS who gave the advice expressed concern over the reluctance of some people to adhere to fire safety measures provided by the Service.

He asked the public to be mindful of the use and management of fire and other sources of heat and warned against the practice of overloading electrical sockets, improper and careless use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naked electrical wires in homes and offices, and improper handling of flammable liquids.

He said the kitchen or the home, farms, workplaces, and entertainment joints must be well managed.

He further advised operators of drinking spots, pubs, restaurants, and nightclubs which are highly patronised in such times to be cautious and strictly monitor the systems they set up to provide food, drinks, and entertainment.

They must check leakages on their cylinders and the hoses connecting cylinders and stoves and desist from putting heavy objects such as stones on cylinders and keep lit candles away from combustible materials, stop refueling generators when in use and not dispose of insecticide cans in fires.

Touching on the sprawling high-rise buildings, he revealed that his outfit’s equipment cannot fight fires beyond the fifth floors of any building and occupants must be cautious to prevent fire.

“It is frightening considering the current increase in high-rise buildings in the Region,” he said, adding that should fire break out in any high-rise building, the fire service may not be able to save the situation.

  • Wider consultation on Public Universities Bill needed UG UTAG

President of the University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan has welcomed the suspension of the Public University Bill.

Speaking on TV3 Midday news on Thursday December 17 Dr. Nkumbaan said the Bill is unconstitutional and impracticable to apply in the universities.

The government on Wednesday December 16 suspended the controversial Public Universities Bill.

This followed a stakeholders meeting held by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on that day.
After the meeting, which had in attendance representatives of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Vice-Chancellors Ghana (VCG), among others, the Chair of Education Committee, William Agyapong Quaittoo, addressed journalists.

He said copies of the revised bill has been made available to all agitating stakeholders for their inputs for the House to resume consideration after all concerns are addressed.

Dr Samuel Nkumbaan said “The reason why we wanted to bring this bill, has to do with the fact that, there is the need to harmonize administration structures as well as to whip in line with universities that have veered off with their original mandate.”

“There is some financial issue regarding some of the offices of the universities and they are of the view that if these are reasons that are motivating the prorogation of a new law, then it is unnecessary, because we already have a mirage of legislature instrument. “

Again, he added “The basic premise of wanting to harmonize all public universities under one bill, is floored on the grounds that, the universities are unique entities and that goes against that principles of constitutional uniqueness. The universities are allowed to innovate and be competitive in terms of knowledge generations.”

“We are hoping with the current suspension of the bill, government will treat us with fate with engage of consultations that are necessary, particularly not UTAG only. We the stakeholders have submitted a memorandum for the suspension of the bill to the parliamentary select committee.

“We will hold a meeting with all UTAG bodies in the various universities to make us think about what is in the bill and we will later announce to the public what our position will on the suspension.” He added.

  • Atwea Prayer Mountain to be developed into tourist centre

The Methodist Church is working in close partnership with the Sekyere Central District Assembly to develop the Atwea Prayer mountain into a monumental sacred religious tourist centre.

Right Reverend Robert Osborn Eshun, Bishop of the Effiduase Diocese of the Methodist church, who made this known said the mountain was now one of the most attracted areas for spiritual renewal and it was important to provide facilities to help visitors.

He was speaking at a public lecture to commemorate the relevance of the discovery and existence of the renowned prayer mountain.

It is located at Abasua in the Sekyere Central district, and considered as one of the most sacred religious and spiritual renewal sites, which attracted more than 40,000 pilgrims for spiritual cleansing and prayers every year.

It was discovered by one Reverend Osei Asibey, an evangelist of the Methodist church in 1965, while he was travelling from Asante Mampong to Effiduase to preach the gospel of Christ to the people in the area.

The mountain, which was known as “Krobo Buo” by the local people, was believed to be the home of a powerful deity who was worshiped and served by a traditional priest for the people of the Abasua community.

After the death of the traditional priest, the deity was deserted and Rev. Asibey, passing through the area to Effiduase was said to have been led to the mountains by Angels of God, who charged him to develop the place into a restive centre for people to pray to seek the face of God to solve their spiritual and physical problems.

It had since become the most preferred prayer centre for worshipers and believers from Ghana and other countries, who visit there to have closer interaction with God.

Rt. Rev. Eshun said the public lecture was to create awareness for the people to know and understand the historical, spiritual and economic contributions of the prayer mountain to the nation and the world at large.
He acknowledged and commended the immense contribution of Evangelist Richard Kwasi Afriyie, Manager of the Centre, for the remarkable infrastructural development in the centre under his stewardship.

Rt. Rev. Eshun said a strategic partnership for investment with the district assembly would not only help to improve the spiritual renewal, but the socio-economic development of the people in the area and called on the people of the Abasua community to keep their environment clean to make the place attractive to the people.

  • Electoral Commission has shown dexterity in its work – Dr Antwi-Danso

The Electoral Commission (EC) has shown dexterity in its work of managing electoral issues this year, Dr Vladimir Antwi-Danso, Dean of Academic Affairs, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, has said.

Dr Antwi-Danso told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that although the EC may have made some administrative mistakes since it is a human institution, it had generally discharged its duties creditably,

Analysing the EC’s performance in the just-ended election, he said, “I doff my hat for this EC because it has improved the electoral system tremendously”.

“The EC used only the money the state gave it for this year’s elections, we didn’t go begging the international community for a dime, and that’s very good,” he said.

Dr Antwi-Danso, also an International Affairs expert, noted that the partisan nature of issues on the election had brought heavy scrutiny on the operations of the EC, …”but I think the EC has not done anything untoward because there is a big improvement in the voting system”.

Dr Antwi-Danso added that the EC had sanitized the electoral register and increased the polling stations substantially, with not more than 750 people at each polling station thus, reducing long queues and making it more convenient for people to vote.

“Even before the 2020 Election, people were making it look like the EC has some sort of predetermined results, which is wrong. In fact, since 1992 we have vilify every EC Chairperson but this EC has remained focus and I doff my hat for her.

“The political parties must have faith in our institutions and that will go a long way to improve our democracy.

“Often we say we don’t have faith in the EC, the Inspector-General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff and others, and it seems every time someone is in opposition, they don’t have faith in the state institutions, which is very bad for our democracy,” he stressed.

Dr Antwi-Danso emphasized that for the country’s democracy to grow, the citizens must have confidence in the state institutions and offer them the necessary support.

“The appointment of the heads of these state institutions should not be conterminous with the life of the government so that they will continue in the next government.

“Their work should be dictated by the Constitution, not the government that appointed them and we, the citizens, must protect them,” he stated.

Dr Antwi-Danso bemoaned the partisanship manner every issue was handled in the country.

“We’re making the EC Chairperson’s work so difficult, but I believe if anyone has issues with the work of the EC, you go to court and prove that the EC is not working according to the remit of the Constitution and not vilifying it”.

About 13 million eligible Ghanaians went to the polls on Monday, December 7, 2020, to elect a president and 275 parliamentarians.

At the end of the polls, the incumbent President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo received 6,730,413 votes (51.59 per cent), beating opposition leader and former President John Mahama, who secured 6,214,889 votes, representing 47.36 per cent.

However, the opposition leader refused to concede defeat, describing the election results as “flawed”.

Meanwhile, both domestic and international election observer missions have given a clean bill of health to the elections, describing it as free, fair and transparent.

  • Ketu South seeks election results justice on streets

Hundreds of residents have poured onto streets in the Ketu South Municipality to demand that the right verdict be delivered in the just-ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the country.

The protesters adorned in black and red attires with some in the colours of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) believed the Electoral Commission (EC) massaged the figures in favour of the ruling party.

Thursday’s protest march organised by the leadership of the NDC in the Constituency formed part of a nationwide demonstration by the party to protest some Parliamentary results for some constituencies and the Presidential result, which saw the incumbent President declared as President-elect.

Madam Jean Mensah, the EC Chairperson announced President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the December 07 polls on Wednesday, December 09, 2020 amidst concerns by the NDC of vote rigging.

Subsequently, Mr John Dramani Mahama, former President and leader of the NDC came out to say he and the party were unwilling to accept the outcome of the results disclosing there would be series of activities to ensure the right thing was done.

The Ketu South protesters through the placards they carried while they walked through the principal streets to present a petition to the Municipal EC office, called on Ghanaians everywhere to “stand and be counted” in ensuring their will regarding the leadership of the country was respected.
“I voted for freedom, not exile, Ghanaians chose John Mahama not Nana Addo, No justice, no peace, stand to be counted” we’re some of the many inscriptions the protesters carried to drive home their resolve and rejection of the announcement by the EC.

Various speakers who spoke at the protestation march reiterated their position not to accept the declaration as it currently was.
Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Member of Parliament elect for Ketu South said a lot of things were amiss with this year’s elections across the country and in her constituency in particular saying, “the election’s not free and fair.”

She blamed the Municipal EC office for deliberately disenfranchising a lot of constituents by way of removing their names from the electoral roll and failing to address challenges people faced during the registration exercise.

Madam Gomashie added that the EC itself had admitted to have some computational challenges with its declaration and called on the Commission to take steps to right the wrongs, while also calling on all well-meaning Ghanaians to impress on the EC to do the right thing and respect the will of the citizenry in the elections.

  • No lawyer yet from Legal aid for J.B.s alleged killers

Legal Aid is yet appoint a defence lawyer for the alleged killers of J.B. Danquah Adu, Abuakwa North Member of Parliament.

The Accra High Court hearing the case of the murder noted that a letter was prepared and served on the Legal Aid but unfortunately “we have not received any response.”

But at the court on Wednesday, there was one Okyere Kumah a lawyer from the Legal Aid on a different matter hence the court tasked him to inform his director to act upon its letter requesting for a lawyer for the accused persons.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to January 15, 2021.

At the last court sittings Mr. Augustines Obuor who had represented the accused over the years, withdrew his services in the murder trial.

Mr. Augustines Obuor, who had represented Daniel Asiedu, aka, sexy dondon, and Vincent Bossu, for the past four years, informed the High Court that he had received hearing notice from the Court but he was no longer going to represent the accused.

According to defence counsel, he had read and seen many videos on social media involving Asiedu regarding his admission of the crime to the whole world including jurors in the matter.

“I, therefore, find it difficult to defend this matter when accused person (Asiedu) has told the whole world, including jurors that he committed the crime.

I am aware of the law, which states that an accused in a murder trial shall not plead guilty to the hearing of the jury upon his plea being taken,” he told the Court.

Mr. Obuor said he found it difficult to comprehend the circumstances of Asiedu as how the jurors would administer justice in the light of the admissions made to the world by him.

He said for the past four years, no High Court was ready to grant Asiedu bail or the second accused, Bossu, so he could have conference with them, apart from the cumbersome procedure available for his office to meet with the accused.

“I humbly seek to state that I will not be able to represent the accused person from this point. Since the time the matter was referred to me from the Legal Aid, I wanted to do my best in achieving justice in this matter.”

The Court formally discharged Mr. Obuor and ordered that the Regional Legal Aid Director be notified for new lawyers to be appointed.

The case has been adjourned today with the view of empaneling of jurors in the presence of a new counsel assigned by Legal Aid.

Asiedu and Bossu are facing a charge of conspiracy.

Asiedu is additionally facing a charge of murder.

The two are believed to be involved in the murder of the late Legislature in his home at Shiashie, near East Legon in the year 2016.

The Court has preserved their pleas and remanded the two into prison custody.

  • 2021 New Year School focuses on global health crises

The 72nd Annual New Year School and Conference (ANYSC) was on Thursday launched in Accra with a focus on, “Building Ghana in the face of Global Health Crises.”

The conference is slated for January 19-20, 2021 at the University of Ghana, Legon.

It is being organised by School of Continuing and Distance Education, College of Education, University of Ghana.

Unveiling the event Thursday, Mr Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, Minister of Health, said the ministry would adhere to its mandate of championing the course of a healthy population to contribute to socio-economic growth of the country.

“Health is not expenditure, but an investment that yields dividends, especially when the population becomes healthy and productive,” he said.

He said since the outbreak of COVID-19 on March 12, 2020, government had rolled out pragmatic measures to respond to the pandemic.

These included; the closure of boarders, effective contact tracing, and imposition of restrictions in parts of the country and intra city movements.

The minister said government had established Coronavirus Alleviation Programme to support Micro, Small and Medium-size businesses to minimise job losses and expand industrial output for domestic consumption and exports.

Through the programme, he said the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Local Government and the Rural Development as well as other stakeholders provided food to individuals and homes in the affected areas of restrictions.

He stated that government in collaboration with the National Board for Small Scale Industries, the Business and Trade Associations and selected Commercial and Rural Banks, rolled out a soft loan scheme of GH¢ 600 million with a one year moratorium and two year repayment period for Micro, Small and Medium Scale businesses to reduce harsh economic effects on some business owners.

Mr Agyemang-Manu said government would continue to strengthen the capacity of health systems and public health to identify cases, isolate and treat them.

He added that it would continue to trace and quarantine contacts, stressing that the country’s policies would be driven by data and science.
Mr Agyemang-Manu said the pandemic had helped the country to build the necessary alliances and partnership in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, alluding to benefits of the roadmap to Universal Health Coverage of leaving no one behind.

Professor Michael Tagoe, the Acting Provost, College of Education, University of Ghana, said though the spread of COVID-19 had not been as virulent as in the Western world, African countries had struggled to improve health care for their citizens with non-communicable diseases on the rise.
In Ghana, records show that hypertension, stroke, diabetes and cancers are responsible for 43 per cent of all deaths.

Prof Tagoe said education in the era of global health crises was the best approach to dealing with the pandemic and reducing non-communicable diseases in the country.

He called for the need to ensure that more health facilities were built and investments made in health sector workforce for sustainable healthcare growth.

Dr John Boateng, Director, 72nd ANYSC, urged institutions and agencies to engage in strong collaborations and partnerships.

That, he said was crucial in finding common solutions to national problems and building resilience against global health crises.

The Annual New Year School and Conference was introduced in 1948 and attracts people from all walks of life to deliberate on topical issues of national and international interests.

  • Punish stowaways severely to deter others – Tema Port Security Manager

A law that offers a stiffer punishment for stowaways to serve as a deterrent to others is needed.

Colonel William Kwabiah, Tema Port Security Manager, who made the call, said the current laws on the act were not deterrent enough leading to a number of people trying their luck to embark on such journeys.

Col. Kwabiah added that offenders were often given meagre fines and insignificant jail terms saying “once you do not get a punishment that is punitive enough that would serve as a deterrent, we would continue to have young men who are daring to try and go on this adventure”.

He explained that stowaways were mostly fined about 500 Ghana cedis or jailed for a month or two, adding that in most cases such fines were settled for them by family and friends.

Briefing the media on a recent stowaway incident, Col. Kwabiah revealed that his outfit apprehended two suspected stowaways on December 8, 2020.

He said the two, Aaron Abeiku Taylor, 28 years old and Emmanuel Bodor, 19 years, in accordance with the laws, would be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service who would subsequently hand them over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.

He appealed to relevant agencies to join his outfit to intensify sensitization in the communities on the negative consequences of stowaway.

“The solution is to first educate our youth through formal and informal means.

We need to engage the chiefs. We have been speaking to some of the chief fishermen, to get through to the young men to stop this practice.”

Encouraging the youth to refrain from the act, he noted that the act was not as attractive as some youth perceived, stressing that the act could even lead to their death.

“Stowaway is not an adventure that people should attempt. Once you do, you do not end well. Most people do not live to tell their stories,” he said.

  • Election 2020: Some journalists were caught up in the euphoria of scoops Juliet Amoah

Juliet Amoah, the Executive Director of Pensplusbytes, a media capacity-building organisation has indicated that their findings from the just-ended 2020 elections have established that many reporters were only interested in scoops.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Juliet Amoah explained that “some journalists got caught in the euphoria of scoops…” so, most of them took their information from social media and presented them as facts.

“Of course, there came the issue of not fact-checking enough…” she said.

She further stated that there were no clear lines between the interactions on [a] traditional media and non-traditional media.

“What happens with what the online news portals were doing […] was reporting from what they saw online and [on] other blogs, and some journalists were taking information from there and passing it on,” Juliet Amoah noted.

The media, after the 2020 elections, have been accused by the opposition NDC of churning out figures which were not accurate – figures which they used to project Nana Akufo-Addo, the candidate of the incumbent NPP as the winner of the presidential election.

Due to this development, some journalists have been physically attacked or vilified.

  • If I behaved like Klopp on the touchline I’d be sent off – Mourinho

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho has suggested he is treated differently than other Premier League managers, claiming he would be sent off if he behaved the same way as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Mourinho’s side fell 2-1 to the Reds in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, as Roberto Firmino’s 90th-minute header settled the top-of-the-table clash at Anfield.

Tottenham had just 24 per cent possession and two shots on target compared to Liverpool’s 11, but they could have easily escaped with a point or even all three had Steven Bergwijn or Harry Kane have put away good chances in the second half.

At the conclusion of the match, Mourinho and Klopp exchanged words on the touchline. When asked by Amazon what was said, Mourinho said he told Klopp that Spurs deserved to win the match and that there is a double standard when it comes to coaching behaviour.

“I told him the best team lost and he disagreed, but that’s his opinion,” Mourinho said of Klopp. “If I behave the same way he does on the touchline, I do not stay there. That’s animated? For some reason I am different.”

Speaking to the BBC, Mourinho added that he felt Klopp and the Liverpool bench were putting undue pressure on the officials to show Giovani Lo Celso a second yellow, forcing him to remove the Argentine after 58 minutes.

“The game was always under control. I feel it was a very undeserved result, but that’s football,” Mourinho added. “At half-time we move a little bit the pieces, but overall the game was always under control and I am very pleased with the performance.

“The changes were to find counterattack situations which we did immediately, but with Gio’s yellow card and the incredible pressure these guys on the touchline put on the officials, I was afraid of the yellow card and I had to take him off. I am not the one to speak to my colleagues about their behaviour on the touchline.”

Spurs dropped to second place with the defeat to the defending champions, who went three points clear at the top of the table. Still, Mourinho felt his opponents on the night didn’t demonstrate their title credentials.

“Very good performance, of course some mistakes, some things to improve, a very unfair result. My team told me I am right when I say from the beginning of the season we go to every match to win. We played against the champions in their stadium and we had the best chances to win,” Mourinho added to Amazon.

“The team was brilliant. Today Liverpool didn’t look a team that is champion, European champion, world champion – that difference was not on the pitch.”

  • Nigerian teachers’ union threatens nationwide strike over increasing threats

The National Union of Nigerian Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday threatened to down tools over recent attacks on schools, including Friday’s abduction of students in the country’s northwestern state of Katsina.

Recent attacks have posed a threat to the lives of teachers and students, the NUT said in a statement, in response to the attack on the Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, in which more than 300 students went missing.

The latest attack in Katsina “sent shivers through the spine of other members” of the union in the academic community, the union noted.

On December 1, the Headteacher of a primary school in the southern state of Edo, identified as Alu Ola Paul, was kidnapped by gunmen on his way to work and released six days later, said the NUT.

On December 8, two female teachers at a secondary school in the Effurun area of the oil-rich Delta State were also allegedly kidnapped within their school premises by armed bandits and have yet to be released, the teachers’ union recalled.

“In light of these recent developments, the NUT may be compelled to down tools, pending when it is safe for our members to teach and guide our pupils and students without fear of abduction by these faceless enemies of educational prosperity of the Nigerian nation,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, the NUT called on the government at all levels to ensure adequate security and 24-hour surveillance around schools.

“These incidences are sad reminders of previous ugly events in Chibok and Dapchi, where Boko Haram terrorists had attacked and abducted students, creating a monumental disruption of school activities and impeding our nation’s educational growth and advancement while subjecting family members and relatives to unimaginable trauma,” the NUT said.

Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari on Monday confirmed that government negotiators are already in touch with kidnappers of the students, refusing to disclose details of the negotiations as the authorities were trying to protect the victims and secure their release.

A total of 10 schools were closed on Tuesday in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Zamfara, which shares borders with Katsina where over 300 students were declared missing after a recent attack on their school by gunmen.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Commissioner for Education in Zamfara, told Xinhua that the schools are believed to be vulnerable to bandits’ attack, and that measures have been taken to secure their lives, especially those located along the borders with other northwestern states.

The town of Kankara shares borders with Zamfara and that attack is also a threat to students, the official said.

  • More than 63,000 people internally displaced in Tigray – UN spokesman

A UN spokesman said Tuesday that more than 63,000 people have been recorded as “internally displaced” in Tigray, but the UN hopes to know the true number once the world body has more access.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told the regular press briefing that in Ethiopia, the UN continues to engage at the highest levels with the federal government to work out operational details “to guarantee humanitarian access.”ÿÿ

“We are also working to scale up humanitarian assistance in the Tigray region once access is re-established,” he said.ÿ

“In the meantime, our humanitarian colleagues tell us that arrangements are being made to deploy surge teams to different areas in Tigray, Afar and Amhara, and that supplies – including food, health, emergency shelter, and other items – are being continuously mobilized,” he added.

The spokesman said that in neighboring Sudan, UN humanitarian teams there have said that “there are still challenges to help the increasing number of refugees crossing the border.”

“Water, hygiene and sanitation services are extremely limited in all transit centers, as well as in Um Raquba settlement, to where over 16,000 refugees have now been relocated,” said the spokesman.

More than 50,000 people have now fled to Sudan since the beginning of the conflict in Tigray, which started in early November, Dujarric added.ÿ

The crisis erupted early last month during clashes between Tigray rebels and the federal government, cutting civilians from necessities, forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes and refugee camps running out of supplies.

  • GPL Preview: Great Olympics vs WAFA

Great Olympics are in one of their best forms of their lives but will have to punch up against WAFA on Sunday in the Ghana Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Wonder Club have been promising in their three matches played and that includes last week’s 2-0 reverse at Liberty Professionals.

Their opening day 1-1 draw at Medeama was no fluke and they followed it up with the 3-0 drubbing of Legon Cities FC.

Head coach Annor Walker is getting his troops to play the sort of football that will guarantee safety in the Ghana top-flight.

WAFA will be making their third trip and so far it has been one win and one defeat.

Last season, the Academy Boys held the joint best away record alongside Asante Kotoko before the cancellation of the league due to Coronavirus.

They seem to be getting better and that 1-0 win at Techiman Eleven Wonders will be the requisite morale-booster that will run through their veins.

  • I challenge anyone to show me one good thing about Public Universities Bill Prof Atuguba

An Associate Professor and Dean of the University of Ghana law school, Raymond Atuguba, has thrown a challenge to anyone willing to publicly point out a single good thing that the Public Universities Bill will bring to the academia.

Prof Atuguba told GhanaWeb in an exclusive interview on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, that after reading all 51 clauses of the Bill, he is convinced that the Bill, if operationalised, will spell doom for academic freedom in Ghana.

The respected law professor had earlier indicated in an article to members of the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) that government is determined to pass the bill very soon despite the resistance from the academia.

When GhanaWeb reached out to him following his strongly-worded article with some of the justification by the government on why the bill is important, Prof Atuguba said for a single positive thing that the bill purports to bring, there is a hundred-fold, hidden, negatives to the academia in the long run.

“I challenge anyone to show me a single good thing about this Bill. I am ready for a public debate,” he said.

He said upon a critical reading of the Bill, key sections reveal a hidden agenda to stifle academic freedom and politicise the governance of public universities.

“Have you seen any academic supporting this bill? There is none,” he stressed.

According to the sponsor of the Bill, the Ministry of Education, the Public Universities Bill seeks to harmonise the finances, administration and governance structure of public universities in Ghana.

The Public Universities Bill when passed, will give the government of Ghana the power to appoint the majority of members of the University Council.

The University Council will then have the power to appoint and dismiss public university officials.

It will also give the President the power to dissolve the University Council which will now have the power to appoint a chancellor.

Prof Atuguba and members of UTAG are calling for a complete withdrawal of the Bill.

Meanwhile, reports suggest the government has suspended the controversial Bill.

According to Accra-based Starr FM, Parliament has suspended consideration of the bill on Wednesday although it went through second reading on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

“The move follows a meeting with the stakeholders by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Chairman of the education committee Wednesday morning,” Starr FM reports.

Chairman for the Committee on Education, William Quaittoo, told the media that copies of the revised bill has been made available to all agitating stakeholders for their inputs, the report stated.

  • Kotoko makes U-turn; abandons plans to move to Tamale

Asante Kotoko has officially written to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to notify the Association of their decision to maintain Accra Sports Stadium as their home ground in the CAF Champions League.

The move is a swift turnaround after the Porcupine wrote to the Ghana FA of their willingness to rather use the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium as their adopted home ground.

Kotoko initially wrote to the GFA to use Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium as their home venue for their game against Al Hilal of Sudan in the CAF Champions League which is scheduled for December 23, 2020.

But after careful consideration, the Porcupine Warriors have agreed that the Accra Sports stadium will serve them best, especially because the government has refused to open the various stadia to spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to renovation works at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Kotoko opted for the Accra Sports Stadium the same home venue for four other teams including rivals Hearts of Oak.

The earlier decision to go to Tamale was conceived because the venue was seen as closer to Kumasi (the original home of Kotoko) than Accra and would have made financial sense to cut down the travel expenditure of the team.

The GFA had reached the final stages of approval the Tamale Stadium for use by Kotoko before the club wrote back to reverse their earlier request.

The Porcupine Warriors progressed from the preliminary round to this stage without kicking a ball after Mauritanian side FC Noaudibou failed to raise a team for the second leg encounter due to coronavirus infections.

CAF in a statement stated Asante Kotoko progressed at the expense of FC Nouadibou because the latter failed to raise a team.

“The match was not played because the Mauritanian team could not meet the minimum number of players required by CAF due to the positive cases of COVID in the team. As a result, FC Nouadhibou were disqualified and Asante Kotoko automatically qualifies for the next round to meet Al Hilal”.

Asante Kotoko will first host the Sudanese giants here in Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg before heading to North Africa for the second leg next year.

  • Crystal Palace ace Jordan Ayew hopes to score again against West Ham

Crystal Palace takes on West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday night with Jordan Ayew hoping to score again against the Hammers.

West Ham is Jordan Ayew’s favourite opponent since he made his English top-flight debut five years ago.

The Black Stars striker has scored four goals against West Ham – his best tally against an opponent in the competition.

Last season, Palace beat West Ham by the same scoreline, 2-1, home and away and in both games, Ayew emerged as the match-winner.

Ayew had a video assistant referee to thank for the winning goal in the first game at the London Stadium.

But he scored a remarkable goal in the second match at the Selhurst Park Stadium.

With the game in added time, Ayew danced through the Hammers defense on the edge of the box and then brilliantly beat goalkeeper Roberto with a calm chip.

The goal was nominated for the best goal of the season.

He will hope to relive the moments again, however, considering his current form, West Ham wouldn’t be too bothered about him causing any trouble.

Jordan has struggled for goals this season, netting once in nine league games.

The 30-year-old drew Jordan’s attention to the tweet by mentioning him. But the striker is yet to respond.

  • ‘Zlatan-inspired’ Jonathan Mensah is not ruling out a return to Europe

Black Stars defender, Jonathan Mensah is not giving up on a dream return to Europe after three years in the Major League Soccer.

The 30-year-old has been one of the best center backs in the MLS, leading Columbus Crew to the 2020 title with some solid displays.

Having left Anzhi in 2017 for the USA, where it’s mostly considered as a retiring league, the experienced defender rejected such statements sighting an example in AC Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“You never say never. What would get your name out there is to keep putting in solid performances week in, week out for your team and doors will open,” he told the BBC when asked if he will return to Europe.

“This league has attracted big superstars, the likes of David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Wayne Rooney, and recently Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”

“People keep saying this is a retirement league but we’ve seen it’s the complete opposite. We saw Zlatan came here at age 35 and scored lots of great goals.”

“He gave the fans something to shout about with great games, he went back to Europe and is still scoring at the top level like he never left. That tells you how great this league has been and it can only get better from here.”

  • Players affiliated to Palmer and George Afriyie blacklisted from Ghana U-20 – Abdul Salam fumes

New Edubiase president Abdul Salam Yakubu claims players affiliated to former Ghana FA officials Wilfred Osei Kwaku “Palmer” and George Afriyie have been blacklisted from the Ghana Under-20 team.

The highly experienced football administrator has taken a potshot at the Kurt Okraku administration, claiming call-ups into the team were not based on merit.

He took a subtle jab at the current administration over accusation of influence-peddling insisting any player affiliated to defeated Ghana FA presidential hopeful George Afriyie and Tema Youth owner Wilfred Osei Kwaku won’t be given a look-in.

The Black Satellites qualification to the 2021 Africa Youth Championship has been overshadowed by a sustained accusation of influence-peddling in the team.

Karim Zito’s side managed to sneak into the continental championship via the lottery of a penalty shoot-out against less-fancied Niger in Benin on Tuesday.

Bu the qualification has not stopped tongues wagging over allegations of unfair and bias call-ups.

“Your player won’t play in the current Black Satellites team if you are affiliated with Palmer or George Afriyie,” Abdul Salam claimed on Asempa FM.

Despite qualifying to the final of the tournament and booking a ticket for the 2021 CAF U20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania, Yakubu is unimpressed.

To some, it could be sour grapes since the candidate he campaigned for in the Ghana FA presidential election got defeated by Kurt in 2019.

Abdul Salam is seething with rage after his player Salim Adam was dropped for the tournament in Benin.

He feels the midfielder was given a raw deal and went on rampage on social media, accusing the current Ghana FA administration of selfishness.

The 27-man squad called up for the tournament in the neighbouring country are dominated by players aligned to Black Satellites management committee members and associates, it has been claimed in the local media.

The move has been heavily criticized amid accusation of bias and unfair call-ups into the team – an action which appears to have divided the football front.

  • “It’s such an incredible achievement for the team” – Columbus Crew skipper Jonathan Mensah

Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah says winning the 2020 Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup is ‘pretty special’ for Columbus Crew.

The 30-year-old produced a sold shift in defence to help Porter’s men keep a clean sheet in their 3-0 win over Seattle Sounders.

Mensah became the first skipper to led Crew to win their second MLS Cup having clinched their first title in 2008.

“It’s such an incredible achievement for the team because we’ve been through so much as a club, city and everyone connected to Columbus,” Mensah told BBC Sport Africa.

“The community and everyone behind the Save the Crew movement made it all happen, we the players and staff are just the vehicles that delivered it.

“Their determination, resilience and undying desire gave us the strength and determination to accomplish this mission because this is pretty special.

“When you look at life in the past three years, what they’ve done off the field and how this year has been for all, this trophy is our little contribution to say ‘thank you’ for everything.”

  • GHALCA Election: Candidates to undergo vetting process today

Candidates who have filed to contest various positions at the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) will undergo a vetting process today.

The election panel of the club’s umbrella body has confirmed that incumbent Kudjoe Fianoo and challenger Isaac Koomson will be vetted to become formal candidates after the close of nominations.

Fianoo, who is the overwhelming favourite to clock his second term, is being challenged by policeman Isaac Koomson.

Koomson, a former GHALCA vice-chairman lost to Mr. Fianoo in the last election four years ago who is still popular within the football circles.

Many had anticipated that he would contested unopposed before Koomson threw himself into the race.

Vice-chairman Alex Ackumey is surprisingly being challenged by Ebusua Dwarfs John Ansah who is gunning for another seat on the GHALCA council after spending eight solid years as a Premier League representative.

Ansah has completed his two-term mandate but shockingly keen to remain on the council for another four years to complete an astonishing 12-year period, a move which has been heavily criticized.

It’s widely believed he has the full backing of Ghana FA boss Kurt Okraku to unseat Alex Ackumey which could further polarized the football space.

Liberty Professionals dynamic chief executive Linda Ansong will contest as a Treasurer but will fend off competition from Justice Boison.

West African Football Academy (WAFA) operations manager George Ofosuhene is seeking another term as a Premier League representative on the council.

He must fend off competition from former Asante Kotoko official Edmund Ackah as well as King Faisal sporting director Nana Amankwah.

Two will be elected onto the council.

Chief Executive Officer of Danbort FC, Eugene Nobel Noel and Felix Bewu of Heart of Lions will jostle for one of the slot as representative of the National Division One.

Grassroots man Eugene Jacquaye is also contesting a seat on the council but faces competition from Emmanuel Opoku as representative of Division two.

Edna Quagrin and Anita Wiredu will be contesting for one slot on the council as well.

The candidates will undergo integrity checks by the election committee and have their nomination papers scrutinised by the oversight panel.

The election panel expects to formally admit and declare the candidates who are eligible for the office of GHALCA.

The election will be held January 21, 2021, in Accra.

The election panel is headed by former Ghana FA vice-president Fred Pappoe with Inter Allies vice-president Delali Senaye and Enam Dzakpasu as members with veteran Oduro Nyarko serving as member secretary.

  • Naby Keita better than all Asante Kotoko strikers – Agent fumes at lack of play time

Charles Kouadio, the agent for Asante Kotoko forward Naby Keita has launched a scathing attack on the team’s technical team led by Maxwell Konadu.

Kouadio in a live radio interview alleged that his client is fit and not injured but has been left on the bench due to reasons best known to the coach.

Naby Keita is yet to feature for the Porcupine Warriors in the ongoing Ghana Premier League as well as in the club’s participation in the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League.

Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu has opted to start with Kwame Opoku and Osman Ibrahim ahead of Naby Keita who seems to have fallen down the pecking order.

Kwame Opoku and Osman Ibrahim have been on target for the club since getting the nod over Naby Keita.

According to Charles Kouadio, Naby Keita is a better striker than all the current forwards the team has and has no business being on the bench.

“Naby Keita is fit and not injured but the coach has decided not to use him. For now, he is still part of the Kotoko team so anytime he is called upon he will play” Kouadio told Kumasi-based radio station OTEC FM.

“No one is begging anybody to use him (Keita), he is a good striker and I can boldly tell you that none of the Kotoko attackers are better him”, he added.

  • Hopeson Adorye was invited and not arrested – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kpone-Katamanso has called on Ghanaians to ignore media reports of the arrest of their 2020 parliamentary candidate, Hopeson Yaovi Adorye for allegedly threatening to kill the Municipal Chief Executive.

The Tema Regional Police Command had said it arrested Mr Adorye and granted him Police enquiry bail pending investigations for allegedly issuing a threat of death to the MCE, Mr Solomon Tettey Appiah.

However, a statement signed by Mr Prince Dadzie, spokesperson for Team Hopeson 2020 and released on December 15, 2020 described media reports on the arrest as false. He was rather invited by the Police.

The statement indicated that “we want to state unreservedly, that the story is false, malicious, vexatious and has no merit, whatsoever”.

“We do understand that it is an agenda pushed and sponsored in the public by the MCE of Kpone Katamanso and his cronies, betrayers of the very President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, by virtue of whose magnanimity they are surviving.

“They are aggressively seeking shelter to escape the monumental pressure upon them by the good people of Kpone Katamanso for their gross betrayal. The publication should be disregarded by all with the contempt and disgust that it deserves.”

According to the statement, “Honourable Hopeson Adorye received an invitation from the Regional Crime Officer (Tema Regional Command) with regard to an allegation of threat on the life of the Kpone Katamanso MCE, purportedly made by him. He honoured the invite by reporting personally, to the command on Monday, 14th December 2020, as a law abiding citizen”.

They further indicated that “We are fully aware of the diabolical agenda by the MCE against Hopeson Adorye and the NPP at Kpone Katamanso. Solomon T. Appiah should know that his occupation as the MCE is due to the fact that gallant patriots stayed true to the cause for NPP to win power”.

  • Election 2020: JMs children must join NDCs street protests too for their dads selfish interest NPP

The General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr John Boadu, has condemned the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership for inciting the youth to hit the streets in protest to the outcome of the just-ended general elections.

According to Mr Boadu, the children of former President John Mahama, who got defeated for the second time by President Nana Akufo-Addo, must join the street protests sparked by the NDC, since, according to him, they are meant to inure to the “selfish” interest of their father.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, 15 December 2020, Mr Boadu indicated that Mr Mahama should have asked his children, who are wallowing in comfort, to join the youth marching on the streets against the results.

“We won’t allow someone because of his selfish interest and because he wants to contest the elections again, he says children should hit the streets and make noise. Then his children must also join but they are living in comfort in this country, some of them are outside the country,” Mr Boadu noted.

“So, if Ghana burns, you and I and our children will suffer”, he said.

“I don’t think we must condone such statements,” he added.

He, therefore, called on the National Peace Council, National House of Chiefs, Civil Society Organisations and the media to tell Mr Mahama to concede defeat and accept the outcome of the polls.

“Even the media houses: don’t sit on the fence. Tell him point-blank that he has lost the elections and, so, he should concede,” Mr Boadu noted.
