Asante Kotoko will be in search of their first win of the campaign against Legon Cities in this matchday five-fixture of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League this Friday.

The Porcupine Warriors have drawn in their last two games played this season.

  • Ghana target Tariq Lamptey hailed for big Chelsea snub

Brighton and Hove Albion technical director Dan Ashworth believes Ghana target Tariq Lamptey made the right decision in ditching giants Chelsea for the Seagulls.

Having developed through Chelsea’s youth system since the age of eight, Lamptey took a brave decision to reject a contract extension at Stamford Bridge in his quest for regular first team football elsewhere.

The January move to Brighton has turned out to be one of the 20-year-old’s best decisions as he has become a regular feature in Graham Potter’s starting set-up at Falmer Stadium, churning out impressive displays week after week and becoming arguably the revelation of the season.

“I don’t want to speak for Tariq, but I think it was a case of him wanting to go and play football, his pathway was blocked by a super, young player in Reece James who was in his position. Tariq thought he might need to look to play his football somewhere else,” Ashworth said, as reported by his club’s official website.

“We were lucky enough to take advantage of that and give him an opportunity to play.

“You can only play 11 people at a time, you can only give a pathway to a certain amount of people at a time and keep a certain amount happy,” he continued. “This happens on a regular basis at all clubs, it just so happened that we had an opportunity where a couple of our right-backs were coming to the end of their contracts.

“[Ezequiel] Schelotto was out of contract and [Martin] Montoya was leaving,” Ashworth added. “We had a space coming up and maybe we had a chance to give Tariq some games and exposure and he has taken it with both hands. You don’t quite know what you have got with a young player until you chuck them in and give them a go.”

Lamptey, who made his Premier League debut while at Chelsea, has so far made 10 appearances for Brighton this season, starting in all of the games, scoring once and providing one goal assist.

“I have known about Tariq from my England days. [Albion’s head of recruitment and analysis] Paul Winstanley flagged him in the under-23s league. We knew that his contract was running down at Chelsea and we knew that they would offer him a new contract,” Ashworth added, “but it was a situation where I guess he had seen Reece James who is a similar age, who is a top player by the way and an England right-back, blocking his path.”

Born to Ghanaian parents in the UK, Lamptey’s eye-catching performances have erupted an international tug-of-war between Ghana and England, whom he currently represents at U-21 level.

Three presidential candidates have acknowledged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s projected victory at the polls and have called to congratulate him.

  • NDC’s claim that Akufo-Addo is using military to overturn election results ‘false, unfounded’ Nitiwul

The Minister of Defence, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul, has debunked claims made by the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, that President Akufo-Addo is attempting to use the Ghana Armed Forces to “steal the victory” of the biggest opposition party in the 2020 general elections.

While addressing the media on Tuesday, 8 December 2020, Mr Mahama said: “Some of what is happening is unacceptable and Nana Akufo-Addo continues to show credentials that are very undemocratic: You cannot use the military to try to overturn some of the results in constituencies that we have won and, so, we would resist any attempt to subvert the sovereign will of the people. The right thing must be done”.

The Ministry of Defence, in a statement issued by Mr Nitiwul on Wednesday, 9 December 2020, however, dismissed the claims as “false and without any foundation”.

The statement indicated that: “For the 2020 general elections, the military is deployed to support the Ghana Police Service and not to engage in politics”.

“The general public is, therefore, implored to ignore the malicious propaganda against the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) but rather co-operate with them and the other security agencies”.

The Ministry of Defence also reiterated that “the Ghana Armed Forces is a very professional institution and its members are well-respected across the entire world for their professionalism, service to mankind and neutrality”.

In view of this, the ministry noted that “it will not accept any unsubstantiated allegation against the GAF as a body or any of its members without proof”.

  • Covid-19 dominates Google searches this year

In a year dominated by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s not a surprise that the top searches on Google in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria have been dominated, according to the company’s review, by inquiries about the virus.

In South Africa, the hardest-hit country on the continent, people searched for details about the imposed lockdowns and news about cigarettes and alcohol which were banned from sale.

In Kenya, some of the questions people searched for in relation to the pandemic included: how to make sanitisers and how to boost immunity.

Searches about misleading content like the role 5G in the spread of coronavirus was among topics people looked for in South Africa.

There was also interest in the US elections in the three countries with users searching for details about president-elect Joe Biden and the incoming vice-president Kamala Harris.

Nigerians, just like users in the other two countries, searched for local celebrity news.

News about the English Premier League was popular in Kenya.

In Nigeria, Fem, a song by Afrobeats star Davido was the most searched.

Recipes for porn star martini – a popular South African cocktail made with passion fruit – was also among the top searches in Nigeria.

  • Brian Brobbey: Ajax’s teenage goal machine aiming to shake off ‘new Lukaku’ tag

For Ajax’s academy stars, it has become something of an unwritten rule among the forwards that finding the net on your first-team debut is compulsory.

Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Patrick Kluivert all completed the feat, while current teenage talents Sontje Hansen and Naci Unuvar also marked their maiden appearances with goals.

Now, another prodigy has added his name to the list, and it is hoped that Brian Brobbey’s strike against Fortuna Sittard in October will prove to be the first of many in a career that those who have monitored his development expect to be spectacular.

“At Ajax, there is always pressure, so I’m used to it,” he tells Goal in an exclusive interview. “Fortunately, I am a guy who can handle it well.

“It was nice to score in my first game. Beforehand, I was quite nervous, so it makes me feel freer in my head now. Hopefully, I will get more chances soon.”

The 18-year-old has long been marked out as a potential first-team star, with his physical gifts and eye for goal drawing comparisons to Romelu Lukaku, given he has dominated defenders with his speed and strength since entering the Ajax academy around the age of six.

However, even though the teenager admires the Inter and Belgium star, he prefers to describe himself as “the new Brian Brobbey”.

“I don’t think I benefitted much from that [excess strength], because I always played against much older opponents,” explains the Amsterdam native, who has scored over 80 club goals since debuting for the Under-17s in March 2017.

The youngest of four brothers who now all play professionally, Brobbey made his debut for Jong Ajax in the second tier of Dutch football at the age of 16, though he initially struggled with the transition to the men’s game.

“I had cramps every game for a year,” he admits, with head coach Erik ten Hag having noted at the beginning of the current season that Brobbey would only become eligible for playing time with the first team if he could regularly complete 90 minutes.

Thanks to extra fitness training, Brobbey who scored three goals to help the Netherlands win the 2019 U17 European Championship now has sufficient stamina to compete for a place among his more senior colleagues

As always, though, there are also a sprinkling of young talents already making a name for themselves at the highest level.

Brobbey’s close friend Ryan Gravenberch has been part of the first-team picture for over a year while 19-year-old Lassina Traore has become the club’s first-choice striker, after a run of form that was headlined by his five goals in October’s record-breaking 13-0 win over VVV Venlo.

Brobbey believes he has the capabilities to battle Traore for a starting berth in the coming months, having needed just eight minutes to find the net after emerging from the bench for his debut earlier in the campaign.

“Lassina is doing very well as the striker, but I know that there will be opportunities for me if I keep developing myself,” he says.

“I am good with my back to goal, I can keep the ball and I am dangerous in the box. I can also create opportunities for myself or others.”

For now, Brobbey is hopeful he can contribute to title wins for both Jong Ajax for whom he is the top scorer this season with eight goals and the first team, though in the long term he has his eyes on eventually making his mark outside of Netherlands.

“I would prefer to go to Germany [next], because I think the Bundesliga suits my game best,” he says.

“Just like at Ajax, young talents really get the chance there. In England, you can see that another new player is just bought if things go against them, rather than waiting [for them to adapt].”

Still, despite reports linking him with Real Madrid, Brobbey is keen to make his mark at his boyhood club before considering any exit. However, to do that, he needs to sign a new contract, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2021.

“I don’t know exactly when there will be white smoke on my contract, but it is going in the right direction,” he says. “I leave all that to my agent.”

Brobbey just wants to focus on his football for the time being.

“The coaches say that I am doing well and I notice myself that things are getting better and better,” he concludes. “I want people to remember me later as a top striker and a trophy winner, so I’m not there yet.”

If history is anything to go by, when it comes to Ajax players scoring on their first appearance, chances are he will reach those levels.

Mr Nketia also accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of conniving with the Electoral Commission to turn the tables round in its favour to take over Parliament.

He has therefore urged persons who have voted for NDC parliamentary candidates to ensure that ballots are protected to safeguard the seats they have already acquired in Parliament.

“I believe that the NPP is in a very uncomfortable situation because whatever they do, it is clear that NDC controls Parliament now so that is why they want the Electoral Commission to try and find ways to try to collate results that have been declared for our parliamentary candidate. That is why I am calling on the electorate to rise and protect their votes.”

Ghana’s voting ended on Monday in 38,622 polling stations within the 16 regions across Ghana.

They cast their ballots in the general election to elect a president and 275 members of the parliament.

The voting process was generally peaceful except for two persons sustaining gunshot wounds after a shooting incident in one of the polling stations in Kasoa.

The tampering of presidential ballot papers in some polling stations in two constituencies was also witnessed, but the EC reacted swiftly.

The EC has assured the public it will declare the results within 24 hours after the end of voting.

According to the Commission, the new timeline will be communicated in due time.

The Jean Mensa-led EC further reiterated its commitment to conduct an election of transparency, integrity and fairness.

“As such, to ensure that the declared Presidential results are 100% accurate and reflective of the will of the people, the Commission entreats the public and all stakeholders to exercise patience as the collation process continues in the presence of political party agents and election observers,” the statement read.

  • We have won 141 seats in parliament NDC asserts

The National Democratic Congress is asserting that they have won 141 parliamentary seats out of the total 275 constituency seats in parliament.

Addressing the media at a press conference today, the General Secretary of the party Asiedu Nketia stated that this win gives the NDC “absolute control of the House”.

He stated that as per the laws of the country, the NDC party now holds the power to select the next Speaker of Parliament, the Deputy speaker and all chairmen of the Parliamentary select committees.

“We can report that out of the 275 constituencies, the NDC has won 141 and that puts us in a clear majority…our collation so far indicates that our candidate John Mahama is ahead.”

“We are expecting the Electoral Commission to very soon come out to declare him President of Ghana,” Asiedu Nketia added.

The General Secretary said that an NDC majority in parliament will enable their presidential candidate John Mahama in governing the country if declared president of the country.

Asiedu Nketia cautioned media houses from prematurely announcing the winner of the parliamentary elections before it is confirmed by the EC.

South Africa’s grew by 13.5% between July and September this year, the country’s statistics agency has just reported.

This growth comes after a 17% contraction in the second quarter of the year, which has been put down to measures imposed to contain the spread of coronavirus.

That was the fourth quarterly contraction in a row.

Today’s figures show that the economy is bouncing back and if this rate was repeated through the year it would amount to a 66.1% increase.

But South Africa’s economy was still 6% smaller in September 2020 than it was 12 months earlier.

  • Eritrea releases 28 Jehovah’s Witness prisoners

Eritrea has released 28 members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses group after they served prison terms.

In 1994 the citizenship for all members of the church was revoked and followers are routinely imprisoned without trial.

One of the reasons given was their refusal to go on military service.

A Jehovah’s Witness statement said its members were freed from prison in Eritrea after serving sentences of between five and 26 years.

Some were detained for being conscientious objectors in a country with compulsory military service.

The organisation says 24 members are still in prison.

President Isaias Afwerki stripped Jehovah’s Witnesses of their citizenship in 1994 – the year after he became leader of the newly independent country.

Eritrea is one of the most oppressive nations in the world – with no elections or parliament and a draft constitution that has never been implemented.

Only four religious denominations are allowed – Roman Catholic, Orthodox Christianity, Sunni Islam and the Lutheran church.
