A tragic incident unfolded in Nyinahin, within the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, where tensions between civilians and military personnel escalated into violence.
The incident has left one man dead and four others injured.
The confrontation happened on the morning of Thursday, April 24, around 10:30 a.m., during the funeral of a young man being held in the town.
According to Assembly Member for the Nyinahin Bubuom Electoral Area, Clinton Darko, the trouble began when a group of young men dressed in military attire was approached by actual military officers passing through the area.
“The officers reportedly stopped and asked the young men to remove the uniforms,” Darko said. “That led to a heated exchange and ultimately a scuffle.”
What started as a verbal exchange quickly turned chaotic. Stones were thrown, shots were fired, and in the end, 37-year-old Akwasi Lala—popularly called Kushibi—was killed. Four others were caught in the melee and sustained injuries.
Of those injured, three are being treated at the Nyinahin Government Hospital, while one has been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for further care.
Darko also indicated that the military officers fled the scene following the shooting. In response, police have been deployed to the area to maintain order and begin a formal investigation into the incident.
