A devastating accident on Tuesday, April 22, around 5:00 a.m. at Amanase, near Suhum, along the Accra-Kumasi Highway has claimed the lives of 11 individuals.
The collision involved a fuel tanker, registered GR 1300-16, and a Benz Sprinter bus, registered GW 6510-23. While the exact cause is still being investigated, initial police reports suggest the driver of the fuel tanker, reportedly falling asleep at the wheel, drifted into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the bus.
The crash resulted in the immediate deaths of two women and nine men. Several others sustained critical injuries and were quickly taken to the Suhum Government Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Emergency teams from the Suhum Fire Service and Police rushed to the scene to manage rescue efforts and handle traffic along the busy highway. Their quick response was crucial in controlling the situation and assisting the wounded.
ADO1 Akonnor Opare Ohene Daniel, Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service in Suhum, confirmed that the survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Suhum Government Hospital.
Rita Akosua Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister, expressed her deep sorrow over the incident and is en route to the Suhum Government Hospital to assess the situation firsthand.
She is expected to provide additional support and help facilitate the transfer of critically injured victims to more advanced medical facilities if necessary.
