Ghanaians don’t appreciate me, I want to become a Nigerian – Shatta Wale

Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has once again stirred controversy after publicly expressing his desire to abandon his Ghanaian identity due to what he described as a lack of appreciation from his fellow citizens.

The outspoken musician, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, revealed on Instagram that he is seriously considering relocating to Nigeria, where he believes talent and success are celebrated rather than criticised.

Shatta Wale’s latest rant comes on the back of social media backlash over his decision to host popular Nigerian TikTok influencer, Peller. Many critics slammed the move, suggesting it was unnecessary for a star of his calibre to associate with someone they labelled as just an “internet personality.”

Reacting to the criticism, Shatta Wale lashed out at his countrymen, accusing them of constantly tearing down their own rather than offering support.

“Nigerians, please tell President Tinubu or your government so I get a Nigerian passport. This is a toilet country because they don’t appreciate successful people. I want to sell my house here and buy properties in Nigeria. You people should give me a Nigerian name because Ghana is a stupid country,” he wrote on April 13, 2025.

He further lamented how his achievements are often questioned or downplayed by Ghanaians, noting that even when he acquires properties or vehicles, people still claim they don’t belong to him.

“If I buy a house they will say it is not mine, even when I bought my new car, they said it’s not mine. Ghana is a stupid country and I want to relocate,” he added.

Shatta Wale’s remarks have sparked a wave of reactions online, with some supporting his frustrations, while others accuse him of being disrespectful and unpatriotic.
