GHS65m allocation to Sports Ministry inadequate – Parliament’s Sports Committee Chair fumes

Chairman of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Ernest Norgbey, has criticised the government for allocating only GH¢65 million to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

He believes the amount is too small to support the entire sports sector, which includes several disciplines beyond just football.

Norgbey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, expressed concern that lesser-known sports will be left behind since much of the funding usually goes to the Black Stars.

“As the chairman of the committee, what I’m not happy with is the GH¢65 million allocated to the Sports Ministry as a whole. While the funds allocated to the Black Stars, the national under-20 and under-23 teams, and the lesser-known sports are important, my concern is the total amount given to the Ministry, which is woefully inadequate,” he told GHOne TV.

He also called on the government to give more attention to sports, highlighting its power to unite the nation, even in tough economic times.

“I believe that sports bring us together; it unites us. Regardless of the situation, we need to allocate a substantial budget to that Ministry to keep it functioning. In fact, if the Black Stars and national teams keep winning, even if the economy is struggling, we will still find joy in having something to hold onto,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has not yet released the budget for the Black Stars’ upcoming World Cup qualifier matches against Chad and Madagascar, as requested by President John Dramani Mahama.
