Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye has urged Ghanaians to desist from drinking alcoholic beverages.
He has also asked the National Media Commission (NMC) to brief parliament on methods that have been adopted to regulate advertisement of alcoholic beverages in the Ghanaian media.
Speaking on the floor of parliament on Wednesday, 14 November in connection with the celebration of World Diabetes Day, Prof Oquaye said: “…The Media Commission exists to check certain types of untoward advertisement or media activities.”

“Through the Ministry of Communication, the NMC should come to parliament to brief the House on methods to avoid these types of advertisement, which is encouraging people to drink unduly and also in the hope that, that will make them eat better.â€
He added: “In all sincerity if a Ghanaian cannot eat normally without a drink, that person should consult the doctor because it may be due to a medical condition.”

“I will direct that the committee responsible for communication take this up with the Media Commission.â€
