Minority urges traditional leaders to intervene in removal of CJ

The Minority in Parliament is appealing to traditional and religious authorities to step in and advise President John Dramani Mahama to halt current efforts that could lead to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

At an emergency press briefing held on Wednesday, April 16, the caucus expressed concern over what it described as a flawed process driven by petitions that do not meet constitutional standards.

Legal Counsel for the Minority and Suame MP, John Darko, said the petitions were without merit and warned that proceeding with them could damage the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“To our revered traditional leaders and religious leaders, the time to call the president to advise him is now, the time to pray for our country is now. We should not wait until it’s too late,” he urged.

Darko further criticised the handling of the petitions, calling them frivolous and dangerous to the credibility of the judiciary.

“How can any serious country, mindful of its past, and desirous of improving its democratic credentials entertain such loose petitions and to orchestrate the destruction of the last bastion of the pillars our democracy,” he added.
