Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that Ghana has been selected by telecom giant MTN as the site for its second artificial intelligence (AI) lab in Africa.
In an interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, April 14, Sam George explained that MTN currently operates just one AI lab on the continent, located in South Africa.
He emphasized that bringing the new lab to Ghana highlights the nation’s growing importance in AI development and innovation.
Describing the project, he called it a “center of excellence,” expected to advance AI, machine learning, and digital transformation efforts in the region.
The initiative supports Ghana’s broader vision of becoming a key player in AI on the African continent.
The upcoming lab is also set to boost collaboration among tech experts, researchers, and innovators, strengthening the country’s digital landscape.
“MTN is building it’s second AI lab in the whole of Africa. There’s only one that MTN has right now in the South Africa. They are bringing the second one into Ghana. It’s going to be a centre of excellence,” Sam George told host Bernard Avle.
