SLTF settles unpaid allowances for teacher trainees

Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has paid all outstanding teacher trainee allowances for the 2023/2024 academic year.

A total of 65,685 students from 46 colleges of education across the country received the payments, which covered arrears for three months.

“The arrears, which cover three months, have now been fully settled. The payment is in consonance with the fund’s mandate to facilitate access to financing support for tertiary education students in Ghana,” said a statement signed by the SLTF’s Acting CEO, Dr. Saajida Shiraz.

According to the statement, the payment is also part of the government’s reset agenda, which focuses on improving support systems in the education sector and ensuring students are able to continue their studies without interruption.

The SLTF reaffirmed its commitment to providing financial support in a timely, transparent, and efficient manner to students in need.

“Robust measures are being implemented to guarantee the consistency, reliability and seamless execution of all future disbursements in full alignment with established policy directives,” it added.

Dr. Shiraz, who took over as Acting CEO earlier this year, had promised to prioritize the timely disbursement of funds in line with the President’s reset agenda. Under her leadership, the SLTF has renewed its focus on ensuring that eligible tertiary students receive financial support without delays.

During the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on March 11, 2025, Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson confirmed that funding for teacher and nursing trainee allowances will continue.

“The government remains committed to sustaining the teacher and nursing trainee allowances to support students in their professional training,” he told Parliament.

Dr. Forson also assured lawmakers that steps were being taken to prevent future delays in payments.

“The budget provides for the continued payment of allowances and the government will ensure that trainees receive their entitlements on time,” he said.

The Students Loan Trust Fund was created under the Trustee Incorporation Act, 1962 (Act 106), to offer financial assistance to students and promote national development goals outlined in Articles 25 and 38 of the 1992 Constitution. It replaced the former SSNIT Students Loan Scheme.
