Suspected cable thief electrocuted at ECG substation in Kumasi

A man in his late 30s died after he was electrocuted while attempting to steal a cable at an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation in Adoato, near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Greater Kumasi.

The incident happened early Saturday morning, April 19, 2025, when the man tried to cut and steal an earth wire.

His actions led to a power outage that affected many customers across Greater Kumasi and surrounding areas.

According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Public Relations Officer for ECG Ashanti West, cable theft and vandalism of transformers and other critical equipment are becoming more frequent in the region.

“Lately, vandalising of ECG transformers, cables, protective equipment and other installations needed for stable power supply has been on the rise in the Ashanti Region with recent acts at the same Adoato Substation, Adum Central Business District among others,” he said.

ECG is urging the public to stay away from illegal activities that threaten the reliability of electricity supply and put lives at risk.

“We humbly appeal to the general public and all stakeholders to help us protect ECG installations by reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest police station, our Contact Center on 0302611611, the nearest ECG office, lodge a complaint on the ECG PowerApp or reach us on our social media handles @ECGghOfficial,” the statement added.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has been informed and arrangements are being made to move the deceased to the mortuary.
