V/R: Police intercept bus with ammunition headed for Benin

Police at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa checkpoint in the Volta Region uncovered a large stockpile of ammunition during a routine inspection early Friday morning, April 18.

At about 3:30 a.m., officers flagged down a Hyundai bus with the registration number GR 8246-Q, which was heading from Accra to Benin.

Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered the ammunition hidden in sacks placed beneath passengers’ luggage—specifically, 60 cartons of AAA cartridges (15,000 rounds) and 72 cartons of BB cartridges (18,000 rounds).

The driver, Abasou Fousseni, 45, and his co-driver, Salisu Jalilu, 38, were arrested for further investigation.

Both denied any knowledge of the cargo at first, but according to police intelligence, “the co-driver had loaded the illicit goods into the vehicle.”
