FollowinIn the aftermath the announcement of Pope Francis’ death on April 21, 2025, the Vatican has released details of the burial arrangements, based on guidelines personally approved by the late pontiff.
In April 2024, Pope Francis endorsed a revised version of the liturgical guide for papal funerals, known as the second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis. The updated document outlines new steps for handling the body of a pope after death.
One of the key changes is that the official confirmation of death will now take place in the chapel, instead of the room where the pope dies. Once confirmed, the body is placed directly into the coffin, following a more solemn and structured process.
As a result, Pope Francis’ funeral will be carried out under the very ritual he approved, adding a final, meaningful touch to his legacy as leader of the Catholic Church.
