Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign, has taken a swipe at the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, over his emotional outburst during a recent press briefing on illegal mining.
According to Miracles Aboagye, the minister’s tearful reaction to the environmental destruction caused by galamsey sends the wrong message to Ghanaians, portraying despair instead of leadership.
His remarks follow an emotional press conference where Minister Armah-Kofi Buah, visibly overwhelmed by the environmental degradation in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, paused to wipe away tears as he described the heartbreaking scene of polluted streams and lifeless forest landscapes.
The minister painted a grim picture of what he witnessed—mud-choked water bodies and a once-vibrant forest now turned into a wasteland—prompting a heavy silence in the room.
However, appearing on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, April 22, Miracles Aboagye criticised the minister’s display of emotion, calling it a disservice to the office he holds.
“Who ever directed the minister to cry did him a disservice. We didn’t vote for you to go and cry,” he said.
“This is a man that stood in parliament and told the then president in his face that ‘his tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern a country’,” he continued.
“He is the man who said that they had the solution to dealing with this galamsey. In fact, the cabinet minister, Sam George, the communications minister said that if Nana Akufo-Addo was serious, he would end galamsey in one week.
“So, if you are in power and you are given the mandate to stop it and you come and cry, what do we do. It creates a hopeless situation,” Miracles Aboagye stated.
His comments come amid ongoing national concern over the impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment and calls for more decisive action from government leaders.
