Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has criticised the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, for his handling of Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye’s complaints about film piracy in Ghana.
Speaking on United Showbiz on April 27, 2025, Ziega questioned the minister’s competence after Sam George indicated he would liaise with a colleague minister to address Bimbo Ademoye’s concerns. According to Ziega, Sam George’s comments suggest he does not fully understand the responsibilities tied to his office.
“Which colleague minister is there to oversee television content?” Ziega asked. “It could be he meant agency and not ministry. If that is the case, he should have corrected the mistake. This is confusing because how can a minister of state do such a thing? He is responsible for such a role.”
He argued that Sam George, by virtue of his position, should have directly addressed the piracy concerns instead of suggesting a referral to another minister. Ziega noted that under recent changes, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation is mandated to handle such issues, making Sam George’s response not only inappropriate but also embarrassing.
“President Mahama has changed most of the roles and he should be aware. Our communication minister is Sam George, and therefore all these things are under him. He is embarrassing us,” Ziega added.
Background
The controversy follows an Instagram post by Bimbo Ademoye, who accused some Ghanaian TV stations of airing her movies without permission. In her post, she tagged Sam George, prompting a response from the minister.
Sam George assured her of the government’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights but added that he would refer the matter to his “colleague minister responsible for overseeing television content,” a statement that has since drawn criticism from figures like Nana Frimpong Ziega.
