Accra Academy students in court for alleged violent attack on juniors

Four students of Accra Academy Senior High School have been brought before the Dansoman Circuit Court on allegations of assaulting first-year students.

A viral video that surfaced on social media depicted one of the victims being attacked with a machete.

Among those charged, only 21-year-old Richard Ninson is an adult, though he was absent during the court proceedings. Facing two counts of abetment of crime to wit assault, he remains a key suspect in the case.

Three juveniles, aged between 15 and 17, have had their identities withheld due to their status as minors. They appeared in court and denied charges of threat of harm, abetment of crime, and assault.

In granting bail, Presiding Judge Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Basit placed the three minors in the custody of their respective guardians—a father, uncle, and aunt—who stood as sureties in compliance with the Juvenile Justice Act. A bail sum of GH₵10,000 was imposed on each, allowing them to focus on their upcoming examinations.

As part of legal proceedings, the court has instructed the prosecution to submit disclosures and witness statements ahead of the Case Management Conference. The matter is scheduled to resume on April 14, 2025.

Leading the prosecution, Inspector Esther Mensah, assisted by Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, informed the court that the complainant in the case is a 34-year-old tutor at Accra Academy SHS. His residence is located in Ablekuma New Town.

Investigations revealed that all four accused students, who are day scholars, reside in Mamprobi and Shukura within Accra. Their alleged involvement came to light after school authorities intercepted a disturbing video on January 1, 2025, showing form one students being assaulted with a machete.

Upon discovering the footage, the complainant, accompanied by the aunt of one of the minors, escorted the suspect to the police station for questioning. His statement was recorded before he was released on bail pending further inquiries.

Details uncovered during the probe indicated that on January 17, 2025, the victims had gathered at the school park for prayers when the accused students approached them.

Kneeling was allegedly demanded of the victims, with one being forced to delete all content from his phone before surrendering it. The accused reportedly instructed him to pay GH₵500 for its return.

A collective payment of GH₵10 was also forced upon the other victims, who complied out of fear.

At one point, a victim was allegedly struck in the chest, while another suspect wielded a machete to physically assault him. The entire ordeal was reportedly recorded.

Under threats of further harm, the victims were warned to remain silent about their experience.

Accra Academy student arrested, others suspended for assaulting colleagues with machete

Accra Academy has confirmed the arrest of one student and the suspension of several others in connection with a violent assault captured in a disturbing video that has gone viral on social media.

In a statement issued by the school’s management, the administration clarified the actions taken so far and underscored its commitment to addressing the situation with urgency.

“The student responsible for the act has been handed over to the police for further interrogation, while the other students have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” the statement read.

The video, which surfaced on social media, shows one student flogging a colleague with a machete, causing widespread concern among parents and the general public. The incident, however, took place on January 17, but was not reported to the school until the footage gained attention online, prompting immediate action from the administration.

“The victims did not report the issue until the video was shared online, drawing attention to the situation,” the school explained.

The students involved in the assault have been identified as Shadad Aliu (aka Kester, IVA 1), Haleem Jibril (aka Chopper, 3Bus 5), Ahmed Dauda (aka Foreigner, 3GA 5), and Richard Ninsin (aka Poisonous, 3GA 5). The school confirmed that their parents have been contacted, and statements have been taken as part of the investigation.

The students who are not in police custody, all of whom are day students, have been asked to stay away from the school while the probe is ongoing.

Preliminary findings indicate that the machete used in the assault was not sourced from the school’s premises but was instead brought from home by one of the students.

Accra Academy has reassured parents and stakeholders that the situation is being handled with the utmost seriousness. “We are committed to ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address the situation, and we will inform all stakeholders of the outcome once the investigation is concluded,” the school stated.

The school authorities also acknowledged the concerns raised by the community and assured everyone that the safety and well-being of all students remain their top priority.

  • We have lost it; conscience and character! – GNAT fumes over Accra Academy machete attack incident

We have lost it; conscience and character! – GNAT fumes over Accra Academy machete attack incident

General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, has voiced serious concerns about the decline in moral values and discipline within Ghanaian schools.

His remarks follow the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing an Accra Academy Senior High School student violently lashing two of his classmates with a cutlass.

The video has sparked national outrage and renewed discussions about the state of discipline and character formation in educational institutions across the country.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, February 2, Musah condemned the growing disregard for moral principles and self-discipline among students, warning that this worrying trend could have far-reaching consequences if not addressed promptly.

“As a nation, character and conscience, we have lost it. We are now training people with knowledge, but for their character and conscience, we have lost it. If care is not taken, we will all be in trouble in the coming years. This is something that policymakers must take a serious look at,” he stated.

Musah linked the decline in discipline to the erosion of authority in schools, highlighting how the influence of headteachers and teachers in upholding order has significantly weakened.

He reminisced about an era when headteachers had the power to enforce strict disciplinary measures, and parents worked closely with schools to address and correct their children’s behavior.

“When I was in elementary school, the headteacher was so empowered that no student could misbehave in the school. Parents could even come into the schools and report their wards to the teachers. Teachers, at the time, were empowered.

“Today, teachers have been disabled. There are instances where when things happen at the school, the children will go and inform their parents, and they will come to the school and beat up the teacher. So, when things happen, the teachers cannot talk because when they do, either the students or the parents will come after you,” he explained.

The Musah emphasized the need for a collective effort to restore discipline and moral values in schools. He called for the empowerment of headteachers and school administrators to enable them to enforce rules and maintain order effectively.

“It looks like nobody cares, and we are saying that it is free for all. The earlier we come together and empower the headteachers and school administrators like it used to be, the better for all of us,” he stated.

  • Accra Academy owes us over GHS400,000 – ECG

Accra Academy owes us over GHS400,000 – ECG

Accra Academy was disconnected from the power grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to an outstanding debt of GH¢400,000, according to ECG officials.

The disconnection, which led to a campus-wide power outage on Monday, February 19, also affected some on-campus teachers.

A teacher, speaking anonymously, clarified that the school is not directly responsible for settling the debt and that they are unaware of the specific amount owed to the power distribution company.

Paul Agraga, the head of prosecution at ECG, explained in an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM that the disconnection was part of an ongoing initiative to recover outstanding payments owed to the company.

“Normally, we have a team that goes around once a while to inform our customers of their debts so they do not accumulate and so if you take Accra Academy for example, they owe in excess of GH¢400,000 to the ECG.”

He further explained and dismissed allegations that the ECG is deliberately targeting the school. He stressed that the company also owes its partners, which it has to pay, indicating that the disconnection was part of the company’s broader efforts to manage its finances and recover outstanding debts.

“We did not specifically target Accra Academy, it is an ongoing operation we are conducting, and a number of homes, businesses, and institutions have also suffered the same fate.

“The no-free consumption does not discriminate at all and once you owe, you will be disconnected. It does not matter whether it is Parliament or a security service because we also owe people that we have to pay.”

  • You will stay in darkness unless you pay 50% of what you owe us – ECG to Accra Academy

You will stay in darkness unless you pay 50% of what you owe us – ECG to Accra Academy

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has noted that Accra Academy will remain disconnected until it meets certain conditions in line with the company’s revenue collection efforts.

ECG’s External Communications Manager, Laila Abubakari, while engaging the media, noted that one of these conditions is the settlement of at least 50% of the outstanding bills by the school authorities.

Another solution she floated would be that “someone has to guarantee for them” that “payment will be made “within the shortest possible time.”

“The problem ECG finds itself in is consistent debt. And every month, our debt profile is different. So we have to be more aggressive because we have bills to pay.

“We have issues so we have to be less compassionate, unfortunately,” she said.

Accra Academy reportedly owes around GHS500,000 in post-paid electricity bills dating back to July 2023.

The company explained that it was compelled to disconnect Accra Academy from the national grid on Monday due to unpaid electricity bills.

This resulted in a total blackout on the senior high school’s campus, forcing students to resort to torchlights for studying.

The disconnection sparked concerns among guardians and stakeholders, highlighting broader issues regarding utility payments in second-cycle institutions nationwide.

Meanwhile, a staff member of the school expressed concern about why pre-paid users were also disconnected if the issue was about arrears.

However, Mrs. Abubakari explained that this was a strange development and that ECG would investigate how it occurred.

Accra Academy Senior High School finds itself shrouded in darkness as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) enforces a power cut due to unpaid bills.

The campus, devoid of light, was reported to be reliant on torches for studying as of 08:40 pm on Monday, February 19, as confirmed by a visiting media practitioner.

An unnamed teacher, speaking to Accra-based Citi News, expressed grave concern, labeling the situation as unprecedented in their teaching tenure.

The teacher recounted learning from a colleague about the arrival of ECG officials at the school to disconnect the electricity supply over outstanding debts. Even teachers, utilizing prepaid meters, were not spared from the power outage.

Despite pleas and negotiation attempts, the ECG officials, purportedly from the head office, remained resolute in their decision to cut off power.

The teacher voiced apprehension regarding student safety and the potential adverse effects on teaching and learning, urging the Electricity Company to reinstate the school’s power supply.

Reflecting on the distressing situation, the teacher lamented, “Today is the saddest day in my life as a teacher with over 31 years of experience. I have never witnessed anything like this before. We received a call that ECG officials were on campus to disconnect the school due to some indebtedness. What pains me is that the teachers staying on campus, who use prepaid meters, have also been disconnected. Currently, we have about 3,000 students in school, and this is the situation we find ourselves in. If something happens to any of the students, who will be held responsible?”

“We called the officials, and they insisted that they were following orders from above to disconnect us due to the amount we owe. We don’t even know the exact amount, and we are not the ones supposed to pay it. Despite our efforts to prevent this situation, they never listened. I appeal to the ECG leaders to consider the students. I urge them to come back and take the necessary steps.”

The teacher highlighted worries about students’ safety and the impact on teaching and learning, appealing to the Electricity Company to restore the school’s power supply.

  • 15-year-old student allegedly behind 3 fire outbreaks at Accra Academy

A 15-year-student of the Accra Academy Senior High School has admitted to having been behind three separate fire outbreaks on campus.

The Form Two student, name withheld, has been handed over to the police for investigation. He is being charged for causing unlawful damage contrary to section 172(1) (b) of the Criminal and other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Based on a recent fire recorded on June 23, 2021, authorities of the school set up a Committee to investigate the unfortunate incidents at the school.

Upon a careful assessment, it was revealed that the Form 2 student was behind the fire recorded at the dormitories including the ones that destroyed several properties at the Alema Hall and Halm-Addo Hall.

The student who explained that he was forced to enroll at Accra Academy confessed that he secretly set the dormitory on fire intending to close down the school. According to management of the school, the boy sought to be a day student instead of being in the boarding house after the fire incident at the dormitory.

In his account, he revealed that he carries out his action while students are at prep studying adding that he buys petrol from a nearby filling station, sprinkles on plastic bottles and then set the dormitory on fire with a match.

In January 2021, GhanaWeb reported on a fire incident at one of the new dormitories at Accra Academy which destroyed several properties including food items, trucks, books, chop boxes, mattresses among other valuables. The students were at prep when the incident occurred, reports indicated that there was no power at the time of the incident, this the National Fire Service described as “strange”.

“There was no power at the dormitory and so it is strange that the building could catch fire…The first one too we were told there was no power in the dormitory so it means that the students are not monitored properly to find out whether somebody used naked flame secretly or mobile phone. A mobile phone hidden in books for a longer period of time and it becomes hot can ignite fire,” said the Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service, Robinson Okoe Ellis in an interview on TV3.

The student has however been bailed and handed over to his parents. The PRO of the Accra Regional Police, DSP Effia Tenge has stated that the matter has been forwarded to the Attorney General Department.
