Inaki Williams’ availability for Ghana’s friendlies in doubt as he picks up injury

Ghana international Inaki Williams has picked up an injury, bringing into question his availability for the Black Stars’ friendlies with Japan.

The Athletic Bilbao captain picked up the injury during Athletic Bilbao’s 3-1 win over Qarabag on Wednesday, October 22. He was substituted at the 38th minute after feeling discomfort. A post-match assessment by the medical team confirmed he had suffered an adductor injury.

The club confirmed his injury in a statement shared on their website on Thursday, revealing that it affects the adductor muscle in his right leg.

“Iñaki Williams had to be subbed off in the 38th minute of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Qarabag FK after suffering an injury to the adductor muscles in his right leg”, a statement from the club read.

However, the club didn’t specify the timeline for his recovery but noted that, he has began treatment for the injury.

This is the latest injury to a Spanish-born Ghanaian who has a reputation as an iron man. Williams missed Ghana’s 5-0 win over the Central African Republic and 1-0 win over the Comoros in the World Cup qualifiers due to a muscle overload in his left leg in October.

Ghana sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, marking the country’s fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

While they look forward to finding out who their group-stage opponents will be when the official draw is held on December 5, Ghana will take on Japan on November 14 and South Korea on November 18 in friendly games after qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Due to the unspecfied timeline of Inaki’s recovery pundits and football fans are speculating the possibility of his absence.

Meanwhile, Ghana Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, during a media appearance, called on the Ghana-Spanish-born player to adapt better to the team as Ghana gears up for next year’s FIFA World Cup.

Williams, who missed Ghana’s final two qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Comoros due to injury, has scored just two goals in 25 appearances since switching allegiance from Spain in 2022.

Speaking exclusively to Joy Sports, Addo emphasized the need for the Athletic Bilbao striker to better integrate into the team’s setup.

“We have to find a better connection with him, and he has to adapt better with the squad,” Addo said.

The coach also acknowledged that he must play his part in helping Williams thrive.

“I also have to find the best position for him. If we all work on that, we’ll benefit because he has the quality,” he added.

The first clash is scheduled for November 14 in Toyota as part of the prestigious Kirin Cup, against Japan, before they travel to Seoul to face South Korea three days later, on November 17.

Both Japan and South Korea have already booked their places at the 2026 World Cup and are expected to field full-strength lineups, providing Ghana with a crucial test ahead of next year’s continental and global competitions.

The Asian tour forms part of the Ghana Football Association’s broader plan to give coach Otto Addo the platform to evaluate his squad and fine-tune tactics before the global showpiece.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama hopes the Black Stars will aim higher beyond their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has urged the team to emulate Morocco and, in broader terms, envision doing more.

President Mahama cited Morocco as a model because they made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

Referring to an unforgettable situation in the history of Ghana football, where Asamoah’s penalty miss cost Ghana’s place in the semi-finals, he urged the team,

“We must follow in the footsteps of Morocco by going beyond the semi-finals and, who knows, with fingers crossed, bring the World Cup trophy home to make Ghana and Africa proud”.

He further went on to call on Ghanaians to support the team without any bias.

“We must all rally behind the Black Stars. We must support them to the hilt. Let’s not bring in any partisan or ethnic considerations. Let’s give them our full support,” he added.

Following a group-stage exit at their previous World Cup in Qatar, Ghana now hope to make a lasting impact in the 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated Ghana for securing its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a congratulatory message shared via video on the football governing body’s Instagram, Infantino praised the four-time African champions for their achievement and expressed excitement about their return to the world stage.

“Congratulations to the Black Stars on reaching the FIFA World Cup for the fifth time in history. Your fans will bring colours, style and passion to the greatest FIFA World Cup ever in 20226 in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We expect that your team will establish more global stars to follow in the footsteps of the famous team that made the quarterfinals of the tournament in South Africa in 2010, but for now, enjoy this special moment, and we cannot wait to see who the Black Stars will face when we have the final tournament draw on the 5th of December.

“See you very soon and well. Congratulations!”

Inaki Williams, Abdul Mumin nominated for 2024/25 La Liga African MVP award

Ghanaian forwards Inaki Williams and Abdul Mumin have bagged nominations for the 2024/25 La Liga African Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Williams’ nomination this year, along with Abdul’s nomination, raises questions about the player’s ability to defend the award he won last season, following his stellar performance for Bilbao.

He scored twelve goals for his team last season. This season, he has played a pivotal role in the club’s position and pursuit of UEFA Champions League qualification. Bilbao currently ranks fourth on the league table with 64 points.

He has also scored six goals and given six assists in La Liga, playing a crucial role in Bilbao’s push for a Champions League spot.

He also played a key role in helping the team reach the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Central defender Mumin on the other hand, had an outstanding season with his club Rayo Vallecano before a knee injury sidelined him.

Mumin scored two goals in 24 league appearances, provided one assist, and contributed to six clean sheets which earned him the player of the Month award earlier in the season.

Inaki and Mumin make up 20 nominees from 13 African countries who are selected by fan voting from Sub-Saharan Africa and assessed by a panel of 25 African sports journalists.

Other contenders for the award include Reinildo Mandava and Flavien Enzo Boyomo. Voting closes on 14 May, with the winner set to be announced on 25 May, Africa Day.

Iñaki Williams has been ruled out of Athletic Club’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Manchester United on Thursday.

The Spanish side confirmed on Wednesday that the Ghanaian forward will miss the crucial tie after picking up a muscle injury.

“Player Iñaki Williams has not been called up for the Europa League semi-final second leg match due to a muscle injury in the common tendon of the right hamstring,” the club said, adding, “His recovery will be monitored.”

Athletic Club’s 30-year-old forward was taken off after 62 minutes during Sunday’s league clash with Real Sociedad.

He shares the top scorer spot for the club in this season’s Europa League with five goals, tied with his younger brother, Nico Williams — who is also absent from the squad for the upcoming match.

With Manchester United carrying a commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg in Spain, Athletic face a steep uphill battle in Thursday’s return fixture at Old Trafford.

Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams shone brightly over the weekend, scoring twice in Athletic Bilbao‘s commanding 4-1 win over Espanyol on matchday 10 of the Spanish La Liga.

Williams’ first-half brace played a crucial role in securing the victory at San Mames. Athletic took an early lead when Daniel Vivian found the back of the net just six minutes into the game, assisted by Nico Williams.

Inaki Williams doubled the lead in the 28th minute, slotting in a close-range finish after being expertly set up by Alex Berenguer. Just two minutes later, Williams struck again, with Berenguer once more providing the assist, making it 3-0.

The Basque side entered halftime with a comfortable three-goal advantage. Shortly after the break, Berenguer added his name to the scoresheet, extending the lead to 4-0. Espanyol’s Alvaro Tejero later netted a consolation goal.

Williams’ brace marks his ninth career double in La Liga, bringing his season tally to seven goal involvements in 10 games.

Meanwhile, Clément Lenglet has suffered sprains to his left knee and ankle, according to tests carried out by the French centre-back after the match against Leganés.

He was forced to leave the match in the 64th minute due to accidental trauma received after Axel Witsel fell on his leg.

The ’15’ rojiblanco suffers from a grade I sprain of the internal collateral ligament of the left knee and a grade I/II sprain of the deltoid ligament of the left ankle.

The French defender will begin physical therapy and rehabilitation work and is awaiting further progress.

Inaki Williams undergoes operation to remove 2-year-old glass fragment from foot

Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has disclosed that Inaki Williams is currently sidelined following surgery to remove a two-centimetre piece of glass from his foot.

This development casts doubt on the 29-year-old striker’s participation in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR).

During a press conference, Valverde explained that Williams had been playing with the glass in his foot since an accident two years ago.

Although he had initially recovered from the injury, it was recently discovered that a portion of the glass was still embedded in his foot, necessitating the surgical procedure.

“We did a scan after the final, and we discovered that he still had some glass in his foot. When they stitched him up the first time, they left the glass in there,” Valverde said, as quoted by Football Espana.

“In addition, it’s not a small piece, it’s about 2cm. It was next to a bone or a tendon, but we had to extract it. The truth is that myself and the doctor were laughing because we couldn’t believe it.”

Williams, renowned for his impressive injury-free streak of 251 consecutive matches for Athletic Bilbao, has recently missed several games for both club and country. He will also be absent from Athletic Bilbao’s final match of the season against Rayo Vallecano.

The Ghanaian forward now faces a tight timeline to recover in time for Ghana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars are set to travel to Bamako to face Mali on June 6, followed by a home game against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on June 10.

Prior to the match against Osasuna, Williams had not scored in 23 games for club or country, with his most recent goal coming against Villarreal in October 2022.

However, the Ghanaian striker seized an opportunity during the game against Osasuna. Taking advantage of a loose ball after a corner kick, Williams managed to score and give Bilbao a crucial lead in the first leg of the semi-final clash, which was played at home.

The first leg had ended in a 1-0 defeat for Bilbao, making Williams’ goal all the more crucial.

Despite Williams’ efforts, fate was not on Bilbao’s side as Osasuna managed to score in extra-time, emerging victorious and securing their spot in this season’s Copa del Rey final.

After the game, the former Spain international has taken to social media to express his excitement after ending his goal drought.

“Never forget that we are living what one day we dream of. THANK YOU ALL FOR WHAT YOU MADE US LIVE 🙏🏿♥️” he tweeted.

In preparation for their two-game series against Angola in the 2023 African Cup of Nations Qualifiers, the Black Stars players on Monday begun reporting to camp.

About six of the 25 players who were named for the matches as of Monday, March 20, arrived at the teams’ camp.

Andre Ayew, the captain of the Black Stars, set an example by showing up early to the team’s training.

Andre Ayew arrived in the nation on a flight from the UK on Saturday night after taking part in Nottingham Forest’s loss to Newcastle.

Spanish-based Ghanaian striker, Inaki Williams is also among the players who have touched down in Ghana.

This will be the first time Inaki Williams plays on home soil after switching nationalities from Spain to Ghana. He has so far made 6 appearances for the Black Stars.

In-form Ghanaian winger, Joseph Paintsil has also touched base in Ghana. Paintsil is making his return to the Black Stars squad after being left out of Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The winger has scored 13 goals with 12 assists in 29 appearances at club level.

Defender Joseph Aidoo also arrived at the Black Stars camp on Monday. The Celta Vigo player is among those who have been named to the squad.

Afcon 2023: Inaki Williams to make debut for Ghana after nationality switch

After switching to play with the Black Stars last year, Iaki Williams will be making his debut in Ghana.

The Athletic Bilbao forward has been included in Chris Hughton’s 25-man squad for this month’s qualifier against Angola for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Prior to the rematch in Luanda, Ghana will play the Palancas Negras in the opening match on March 23, 2023, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The striker from Spain is anticipated to play in both contests, though.

This is will be the first time he is playing on Ghanaian soil and also in front of the home fans in Kumasi.

More so, the highly-rated footballer is yet to score his first international goal for Ghana and getting it against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium will surely be one that will forever be remembered.

In July 2022, he confirmed he has chosen to represent Ghana at the international level and received his maiden invitation in November for friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.

He was later selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after being named in the final squad list. He played all games as Ghana exited after the group stages.

Williams has been in decent form for Bilbao in the Spanish Primera La Liga this season having scored times and provided two assists in 23 appearances.

Spanish La Liga: Inaki Williams hopes to score Barcelona to boost team

When Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona face off at Camp Nou on Sunday in week 25 of the Spanish La Liga, Ghanaian striker Inaki Williams will be looking to score against Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen.

When the two teams meet this weekend, the Ghanaian international, who has already scored six goals against Ter Stegen, is eager to increase his total.

“I respectfully asked for Ter Stegen’s shirt after the Super Cup, and currently, I put it in a frame at my house,” said Williams.

The 28-year-old has been a key asset for Bilbao this season, racking up five goals and four assists in all competitions.

Williams is hoping to use the Barcelona game to give his side a boost in the race to qualify for Europe.

“I scored 6 goals against Ter Stegen, and I hope to score again in the next match because we need to win, as it will give us a strong impetus to qualify for Europe,” he said.

Inaki Williams has been named in the Black Stars’ 25-man squad for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Angola later this month.

  • Ghana vs Angola: These six strikers could be part of Hughton’s Angola squad

Ghana vs Angola: These six strikers could be part of Hughton’s Angola squad

Due to the Black Stars’ recent inability to consistently score goals in games, the team’s striking unit has become a major source of concern.

The Black Stars have scored seven goals and given up eight in their last five games combined.

At the FIFA World Cup 2022, Ghana’s goals were primarily scored by talented midfielders like Andre Ayew, Osman Bukari, and Mohammed Kudus.

Ghanaians would be hoping that Chris Hughton, the new Black Stars coach, would produce a lethal goal scorer who will enjoy the goals under his tutelage.

At Baba Yara Sports Stadium on March 23, Ghana would play Angola in the first leg of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers before facing them again days later.

Here are 6 strikers who could make Chris Hughton’s squad for Ghana’s clash against Angola.

    Ernest Nuamah:

From the staples of Right to Dream and FC Nordsjaelland comes another Ghanaian star waiting to explode. At the age of just 19, Ernest Nuamah is doing great work in the Danish league. Ernest Nuamah has scored 8 goals with 4 assists in 20 matches for his side. The youngster’s 3 goals in 2 matches for FC Nordsjaelland in February is enough to win the heart of Chris Hughton to hand him a call-up. Ernest Nuamah was named in Ghana’s provisional squad for the world cup before it was reduced to 26. He has not made any appearance for Ghana at any level.

    Patrick Twumasi

Not many remember Deportivo Alaves as a forward because of his short stint in the national team, playing just 3 matches after his 2017 debut. Twumasi, who has been away from the public buzz, has been doing the talking on the pitch. This season, though, the forward scored 8 goals with 2 assists in 21 matches for his Israeli club. Twumasi’s five consecutive goals in February are enough justification for his inclusion in Chris Hughton’s squad for the AFCON double header against Angola.

    Bernard Tekpetey

The 25-year-old Ghanaian is arguably the most in-form striker abroad. Last season he netted 10 goals with 12 assists to be awarded the Best Foreign Player in Bulgaria. This season though, the forward has already equalled his 10 goals from last season and is on the verge of scoring more. However, despite his sharp form, Tekpetey has been overlooked by the national team. Since his two appearances at the 2017 AFCON, the striker has never been given a call-up. However, coach Chris Hughton might find him worthy in his squad for the Angola clash.

    Jordan Ayew

Jordan is the most experienced striker in the Ghana national team but is experiencing a goal drought. His last goal was on the final day of 2022 when he scored in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth. Despite his deep form, Chris Hughton can count on the 31-year-old to create chances for his teammates as he did at the 2022 World Cup. Jordan Ayew has scored 19 goals in 87 appearances for the Black Stars since making his debut in 2010. Hughton might prefer to use Jordan as a substitute due to his age.

    Inaki Williams

Despite being Ghana’s lead striker at the World Cup, Inaki Williams was unable to score a goal at the tournament. However, that has not stopped him from scoring goals for Athletic Club. This season, the striker has scored five goals with four assists in 26 matches. Although he has yet to score a goal in six matches, Ghanaians are assured that Inaki will start netting goals when he finally finds his footing; maybe his first match on Ghanaian soil will break the spell.

    Antoine Semenyohttps://www.youtube.com/embed/Hu9E9vWulvg

Call him the super-sub because he knows how to score whenever he comes on as a substitute. He scored his first goal for the Black Stars as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Switzerland. The Black Stars striker is currently having a difficult time since joining Premier League side, Bournemouth. He scored 3 consecutive goals at the start of the season for his former side, Bristol City. It would be a big surprise if Hughton left him out of his squad.

  • Kudus is exceptional, I enjoy watching him – Inaki Williams

Kudus is exceptional, I enjoy watching him – Inaki Williams

Ghanaian international midfielder for Ajax, Kudus Mohammed, has received high praise from Ghanaian international forward Inaki Williams for his outstanding performances for both club and country.

For the Dutch powerhouses this season, the 22-year-old has been in excellent form, tallying 15 goals across all competitions.

Despite the Black Stars’ early elimination, the midfielder performed admirably at the World Cup, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Inaki Williams, who was a member of the Black Stars team for the World Cup, has praised Kudus Mohammed and called him an exceptional athlete.

“It’s incredible what I’ve had to experience since I decided to go with Ghana. I don’t regret anything. It’s continuous learning. I really enjoy watching young people like Kudus, who is exceptional. I’m very proud to be part of that group” he said.

Meanwhile, Inaki Williams is yet to score for the West African powerhouse since making his debut in November against Brazil in a friendly.

Absolutely no regrets – Inaki Williams on switch from Spain to Ghana

Inaki Williams, a forward for Athletic Bilbao, claims he doesn’t regret moving from Spain to Ghana.

In June 2022, the 28-year-old changed teams to play for the Black Stars. He was a member of the Ghanaian team that competed in the World Cup in Qatar.

Inaki Williams previously represented the Spanish national team before changing his nationality to Ghana.

“It’s incredible what I’ve had to experience since I decided to go with Ghana. I don’t regret anything. It’s continuous learning. I really enjoy watching young people like Kudus, who is exceptional. I’m very proud to be part of that group,” he said.

  • Inaki Williams is ineligible for the Black Stars – Charles Taylor

Inaki Williams is ineligible for the Black Stars – Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor, a former Ghanaian international, argues that Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao is not qualified to play for the Black Stars and that the nation cannot rely on him.

Inaki Williams, who switched from Ghana to the United States in June 2022, has played for the Black Stars in six matches, including three during the Qatar-hosted FIFA World Cup, but he has failed to score a goal in any of them.

And according to Charles Taylor, Spain had the option of selecting either of the Williams brothers for their national squad, but they chose just Nico since they thought Inaki wasn’t good enough.

“We always want to rely on foreign-based Ghanaian players, but the question is how many of these foreign-based players are starters in their respective clubs?

“We just like cheap things, and rejected goods seem to be our priority. It really pains me that some journalists were saying all our problems were solved after securing players like Inaki Williams,” he said on Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

He added that Inaki Williams cannot save the Black Stars and Ghana should have taken a lesson from the Europeans who didn’t fight to keep him as they did with his brother Nico.

“I only smile and also see such journalists as people whose understanding of football knowledge is suspect.”

“How can our Black Stars be saved because we have Inaki Williams? Do we have better eyes than the Europeans? His gameplay cannot guarantee us any proper title.”

Inaki Williams’ record run ends at 251 consecutive LaLiga games

Inaki Williams‘ incredible streak of 251 straight LaLiga appearances came to an end when he was forced to miss Athletic Bilbao’s match against Celta Vigo on Sunday due to injury.

Williams, a Ghanaian international, had not missed a league game since the 2015–16 campaign before his exclusion was made official by the team.

Due to the 28-year-unidentified old’s physical issue, head coach Ernesto Valverde was forced to manage without the team’s linchpin.
