It added that the value of these assets exceeds the related liabilities and as a company, they must ensure that they must keep the investments running to be able to derive the values needed to meet the needs of our customers.

“We must now forcefully make the point that some companies, individuals and institutions think that we will continue to suffer in silence and lose credibility with our customers. They are wrong. We have through a public notice given opportunity for those finding it difficult to meet their obligations to us to come and sit down and arrange periodic payments. We must meet the needs of our customers. Therefore, beginning this week, we are moving to a different level to collect money from the investments we have made. As our investments produce cash, we will continue to meet requests from customers,” the statement added.

  • California governor to halt executions

California Governor Gavin Newsom will announce a moratorium on executions and a temporary reprieve for all 737 inmates on death row in the state.

US media report he plans to sign an executive order later on Wednesday, describing the death penalty as “inconsistent with our bedrock values”.

Read: Floods and mudslides turn California wine towns to ‘islands’

California has not carried out any executions since 2006, as a series of court battles over execution methods have been waged.

No death row inmates will be released.

Governor Newsom took office in January and a death penalty moratorium was one of his campaign pledges.

Read: Plane crashes into California house killing five

“I do not believe that a civilized society can claim to be a leader in the world as long as its government continues to sanction the premeditated and discriminatory execution of its people,” he said in a statement issued with the executive order.

His move will also withdraw California’s lethal injection protocol and close down the state’s execution chamber at San Quentin prison,

    Capital punishment in the US

The death penalty is a legal punishment in 30 US states
Since 1976 Texas has carried out the most executions (560), followed by Virginia (113) and Oklahoma (112)
There are 2,738 inmates on death row in the US
California has the most prisoners on death row, 737, but has carried out only 13 executions since 1976

    Source: Death Penalty Information Center

Two voter initiatives to end the death penalty in California have narrowly failed to gain a majority in recent years, with 48% support in 2012 and 47% support in 2016. Governor Newsom supported both initiatives.

But a separate proposition voted on in 2016 won support for its demand to speed up executions in California.

The California governor does not have the power to abolish the state’s 1978 death penalty legislation permanently. A repeal would require a popular vote in favour of the change. The next opportunity for such a ballot would be at the 2020 elections.

The reprieves Governor Newsom is now issuing will expire when he leaves office; his current term lasts until January 2023.

More than 900 people have been sentenced to death in California since 1978 but only 13 have been executed.

Another 79 have died of natural causes, and a further 26 committed suicide, figures from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation show.

  • Amend Political Parties Act to tackle vigilantism Kamal-Deen

A Deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamel Deen Abdulai has suggested an amendment to the political parties act to address vigilantism.

Section three of the ACT says: “A political party may, subject to the Constitution and this Act, participate in shaping the political will of the people, disseminate information on political ideas, social and economic programmes of a national character, and sponsor candidates for public elections other than elections to District Assemblies or lower local government units.”

Mr. Abdulai said the detachment from vigilante groups must now also be required to contest in elections.

“It was my position that why not just amend that particular portion of the law to include that a political party must not be manifestly seen to be mobilising militia or vigilantes for the operation of the same.”

“When that political party does that and there is evidence of abuse then the Electoral Commission has the right not to allow a political party not to contest in a general election,” he added.

But the two parties are currently at a deadlock with the NDC saying it would prefer a third party to mediate any meeting.

President Akufo-Addo said he was dismayed by the conditions the NDC had set for a meeting to end political violence and vigilantism.

  • Parliament to summon DVLA boss over changing articulated trucks number plates

The Transport committee of Parliament has accused the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of taking decision without the input of interest groups and threatens to summon the boss to explain his decision to change the number plate for articulated trucks.

This follows the DVLA’s decision from June this year to register over 300,000 trailers and their head separately across the country .The DVLA noted that because trailers are not registered, owners do not maintain them properly. Presently, all articulated trucks and trailers have the same license plates at the front and back.

Read: DVLA to change number plate registration regime for articulated trucks

According to the DVLA ,when the new initiative is implemented, the number to be displayed in front of the vehicles will, therefore, be different from the number displayed behind the trailers.

Parliament says it’s not happy with the DVLA, and that DVLA will be summoned by parliament together with the Ministry of Road andTransport to explain their reason for the new initiative.

Read: DVLA commended for ensuring smooth vehicle registration process

In an interview with Starr news the Ranking Member of Roads and Transport in Parliament Governs Kwame Agbodza said:

”DVLA sometime ago took up a responsibility which is not theirs, saying they are selling first aid boxes to drivers and we had to threaten to go to court to stop them before they withdrew that. I don’t know why DVLA has appeared to be a unilateral organization. I’m a ranking member of the road and transport committee in parliament, why should I be hearing this for the first time? What is wrong if the DVLA administration consult the committee so we can understand whatever they are doing” .

He added: ”We are not happy with the current administration of the DVLA. We are going to summon the heads of DVLA together with the Ministry to explain this. The implementation is in June, we will have much time to come in terms with it. Drivers are already burdened with huge cost like the vehicle luxury tax, cost of fuel. The committee stands to avert excessive cost on drivers”. CEO of National Roads and Safety commission Ing. May Yeboah believes the initiative is a step in the right direction that it will prevent vehicles from crashing into trailers stuck on the road:

”It will help the police or any road user to identify who the owner of a truck is when a situation needs to be addressed. By law, trailers are supposed to be registered. If they are registered we will be able to identify them, incase a trailer is disabled on the road, the police or assembly will identify the owner to tow the trailer from the road as soon as possible to prevent vehicles from crashing into them”.

  • Man City ‘teenagers’ in Champions league – Guardiola

Manchester City Manager, Pep Guardiola says his side are “teenagers in the competition” as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Schalke today.

City came from behind to win the first leg 3-2, Raheem Sterling scoring in the last minute of normal time.

They have never won the Champions League but City are one of the favourites to claim this year’s title.

“We cannot deny how strong other teams are,” said Guardiola.

“You have to dream, to point as high as possible and at the same time accept there are other teams thinking the same.”

Last week, Manchester United produced a sensational comeback to knock out French champions Paris St-Germain – a day after holders Real Madrid were stunned by Ajax at the Bernabeu.

Roma, who were defeated in the semi-finals by Liverpool last season, were also knocked out by Porto thanks to an extra-time penalty.

But Guardiola – who said City were “still not ready to fight for the latter stages” of the competition – believes qualification for the knockout stages constituted “incredible success”.

“All the clubs that are in the knockout stages want to win this title. It is difficult,” said Guardiola. “This competition is judged that when you are out of the last 16 it is a big disaster. My perspective is completely different.

“People say it is easy. Imagine to get into the last eight teams in Europe? Of course we want to win it but the other teams also have this desire.

“People think that because Real Madrid are not there, this competition will be easy. Of course I thought they were the favourites but there still remains incredible clubs to beat.”

Schalke travel to the Etihad with head coach Domenico Tedesco being told he has two games to save his job by sporting director Jochen Schneider.

The German side have let in 11 goals in three heavy defeats to leave them just four points above the Bundesliga relegation places.

    Team news

Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte could return from a hamstring injury but John Stones, who has had a groin problem, still needs to be assessed.

The hosts are already without suspended pair Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho.

Schalke playmaker Daniel Caligiuri has been sidelined for four weeks with a leg injury and will not travel.

Forward Mark Uth and midfielder Amine Harit have been left out of the squad again for disciplinary reasons but full-back Hamza Mendyl could play.

‘There is no decision yet’ – What they said

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan on signing a new contract: “There is no decision yet otherwise I would have signed or rejected a contract. We are still in talks but I don’t feel there is much pressure. One day there has to be a decision but I am very happy here and playing under Pep.

“This is something everyone has to decide for themselves. I am 28 years old so my next contract will maybe decide where I will be for the end of my career. Maybe someone has an inner feeling to go for a new challenge or to change something.

“I am always open-minded for challenges but it is a personal situation. It is not obvious. Everyone has to make his own decision. At the moment I try to play as good as possible and after the season we are going to sit and talk again. My main target is to go for all the competitions.”

Pep Guardiola on what to expect from the game: “It is 90 minutes and still we have a job to do. One week ago we didn’t expect PSG or Real Madrid would happen. A lot of things can happen.

“Many things can happen in 90 minutes in this kind of competition. We are quite lucky because we played a long time with 10 men and 2-1 down. In normal circumstances, we would have to make an incredible effort to go through.”

    Match Facts

    Head-to-head

Of the previous 27 occasions of a side scoring three or more goals away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie, all have gone on to progress, including six after winning 3-2.

Manchester City have won each of their past three meetings with FC Schalke in European competition, including a 5-1 win in the 1969-70 Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final in their only previous home match against the German club.

City have only lost one of their 10 previous home meetings with German opponents in all European competitions (W7, D2), a 3-1 reverse in the 2013-14 Champions League group stages against Bayern Munich.

    Manchester City

Manchester City have lost both of their last two knockout matches in the Champions League at Etihad Stadium, both 2-1 defeats, by FC Basel in March 2018 and Liverpool in April 2018.

City boss Pep Guardiola has never lost to Schalke as a manager in seven previous matches in all competitions, winning five and drawing two.

Striker Sergio Aguero has scored in each of his past three Champions League games (three goals total) and is looking to score in four in a row in the competition for the first time.

Leroy Sane has scored three goals in Manchester City’s past two Champions League games, as many as he had scored in his first 17 appearances in the competition for the Citizens and former side FC Schalke combined.

    FC Schalke

Schalke have only won one of their past nine Champions League matches in the knockout stages (D1, L7), although this was their last such away match at Real Madrid in the 2014-15 competition (4-3).

Three of Schalke’s past four goals in the Champions League have been penalties by Nabil Bentaleb, who could be only the second player to score a penalty in three straight Champions League appearances in the same season – after Thomas Muller in 2014-15 – should he score from the spot again here.

Schalke have scored with each of their past three shots on target in the Champions League (Alessandro Schopf v Lokomotiv Moscow and Nabil Bentaleb twice v Manchester City), with all three coming via set-pieces (one free-kick, two penalties).

City have 98% chance of progressing

Manchester City have a 98% chance of progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals after their 3-2 win in Gelsenkirchen.

City are now up to second place in the Euro Club Index ranking, and are second favourites to win the Champions League behind Barcelona.

He, however, asked their opponent camp to expect a much dangerous Dogboe in the second fight as he believed preparations were going on as planned as they looked to snatch the title once again.

“We are preparing well for the rematch after our loss in the last fight and I can tell you that everything is going on as planned.

“All I can say is that Navarrete should expect to see a much fit Dogboe this time around and everyone knows how dangerous he is when he is in the best of conditions,” Paul noted.

Dogboe (20-1, 14 KOs) lost unanimously to Navarrete (26-1, 22 KOs) in his fourth bout of 2018 despite having the best of year when he defeated the likes of Cesar Juarez, Jessie Magdaleno and Hidenori Otake.

His surprised defeat at the hands of Navarrete in his second title defence shocked the entire nation having just held on to the title for eight months after stopping Magdaleno in 11 rounds to clinch the belt in April last year.

When asked about concerns raised by the general public and some stakeholders in the sport against Dogboe’s immediate rematch with Navarrete, Paul rubbished those claims, stating that the camp had advisors who were well placed in the sport.

He questioned why people would ask his son to go for a contest before taking up a rematch with the Mexican when Dogboe could equally lose in that bout just as they perceived.

“I don’t buy their assertions because we equally have advisors who tell us what to do in situations like this and we all concluded that this was the best decision at hand.

“Remember, what will those people say should my son lose in that preparatory contest they are talking about,” he asked.

  • Akufo-Addo not being sincere in disbanding vigilantism – Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has once again called on President Akufo-Addo to involve stakeholders in the disbandment of vigilantism in the country.

According to him, the NDC as a party has shown willingness to disband vigilantism in the country by writing to the President which till date he has refused to heed to their request.

“He is not sincere to his own words,” he slammed President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, he maintained that the NDC as a party is yet to receive an invitation from the ruling party on the way forward in dealing with the President’s call to disband vigilantism.

“The President is trying to throw dust in our eyes . . . how can such an important discussion, the invitation has to be through a mere phone call as Freddie Blay was saying?” he questioned.

He stressed that the NDC set the pace by writing to the President with the hope that the President and the NPP write them back in response, but not just phone call; wondering why it is so hard for the President to allow the Peace Council to lead the discussion.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed dismay over a letter by the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo requesting mediators and facilitators of the dialogue between the two major political parties in the country.

It could be recalled that the President in his State of the Nation Address at Parliament this year urged both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition NDC to hold a meeting towards the disbandment of vigilante groups.

President Nana Akufo-Addo noted with concern the dangers that vigilante groups pose to the lives of Ghanaians following their attacks by them since the inception of the government and so believes the two main political parties can help disband the groups.

The groups are said to owe allegiance to either the NPP or NDC and at their behest have been terrorizing people in the country.

Price of locally manufactured bread will from next week Monday shoot up by one Ghana cedis (GHC1.00), executives of Ashanti Regional Flour Users Association have announced.

  • WAEC to vary WASSCE multiple choice format

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is considering varying items in multiple choice tests in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to the examinations body, the intention is to create a situation where options for multiple choice tests in subjects during the WASSCE would vary in terms of their positioning.

Read: Five students sweep WAEC National Distinction Awards

The move, it said, was part of efforts to curb the problem of examination malpractice in the WASSCE.

This was made known at a seminar organised by WAEC in Accra recently.

It was attended by directors of education, officials of WAEC, as well as heads and teachers of senior high schools in the Greater Accra Region.

Read: WAEC to biometrically verify 2019 WASSCE candidates

The participants analysed the report of a research carried out by the Accra Section of the Research Department (ASRD) of WAEC, titled “The effect of varying positions of options in multiple choice test on performance of students in senior secondary schools (SHS) in Ghana.”

    Procedure

In an overview of the report, the Head of Department of ASRD at WAEC, Mrs Henrietta Asiedua Yarquah, said students in 33 senior high schools in the country were examined in six subjects: Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, General Knowledge in Arts (GKA) and Economics.

Thirty students in each class were made to write the same subject papers, however, the positions of possible answers in the multiple choice options were arranged differently.

Read: 2018 BECE candidates with withheld results asked to report to WAEC offices

This, therefore, meant that the students could be seated close to each other but may have different versions of the same examination paper due to the varying positions of multiple choice options.

The research disclosed that the approach did not negatively impact the performance of the students in anyway and thereby recommended that WAEC should adopt it for the WASSCE.

Mrs Yarquah urged teachers to engage in more research so that issues troubling them in the area of examinations would be addressed and discussed at subsequent editions of the series.

    Very appropriate

The Registrar of WAEC, Dr Iyi Uwadiae, described the new approach as appropriate and said he was optimistic that when implemented, it would help WAEC in its quest to enhance the integrity of its examinations.

He said the new approach would also help the council to save a lot of money that would normally have been used for printing new examination papers in the event of examination leakages or malpractices that result in the cancellation of papers.

“WAEC spends a lot of money when examinations are cancelled and we know that this approach would go a long way to address that issue,” he said.

Dr Uwadiae said the recommendations of the report would be submitted to the governing council of WAEC for approval, after which they would be implemented.

    Practice it now

Another member of the research team, Mr Kwaku Dankwa, urged teachers and heads of schools to start practising the new approach in their terminal examinations.

That way, he said, the students would be well prepared for it and get familiar with it “when it is introduced into the WASSCE by the council.”

For their part, the teachers and heads of schools who participated in the seminar expressed delight that WAEC was committed to ending examination malpractices.

They proposed that there should be more education and broader consultations with stakeholders on the initiative prior to its implementation.

    8th March, 2019

    THE CHAIRMAN,
    PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE’S PARTY
    JOMORO CONSTITUENCY
    HALF ASSINI

    Dear Sir,

RESIGNATION FROM THE PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE’S PARTY

I wish to thank all party members and executives from polling station level to the national level for accepting and using me as the Constituency Secretary and a Communication Team member for the party since I joined in 2012 till date. I appreciate whatever each of you has done for me.

It is quite unfortunate to thunder in my resignation from my position as the Constituency Secretary and also cease to be a member of the party with immediate effect.

I have for some time now realized the Regional Executives have decided already to drop me from my position in the party and also sideline me from active party activities due to an allegation that I have a link with the NPP and the MP for Jomoro Constituency and that I’ve been defending the NPP and Hon. Paul Essien on various political platforms.

The most disappointing aspect is that, it is said I am biding for him just because I had to lead the youth of my community (Nuba) to fight against certain unfortunate incidents in the community.

My disappointed is greatly in the Regional Executives for not even calling to find out from me whether what they have heard is true or not but rather take a decision for a colleague Constituency Executive to defend me before them.

To conclude, I can never sit down unconcerned for my community to face unexpected problems if the need arises for me to come in. For that matter, I’ll prefer working for my community to working for a political party which will only better my CV and not bring development to my community.

I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused due to my resignation.

    Thank you.

    Signed

  • Boeing 737: Australia joins Singapore in barring Max planes

Singapore and Australia’s aviation authorities have temporarily suspended the Boeing 737 Max fleet of aircraft from flying into and out of their countries.

The decision comes after an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing Max 8 crashed on Sunday, killing 157 people on board.

It was the second fatal accident involving that model in less than five months.

Singapore’s Changi Airport is the world’s sixth busiest and a major hub connecting Asia to Europe and the US.

But only a handful of airlines operate Max aircraft in and out of the country.

No Australian airlines operate the Boeing 737 Max, and only two foreign airlines – SilkAir and Fiji Airways – fly the model into the country.

Shane Carmody, who is in charge of aviation safety at Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, said the suspension would remain in place while the organisation awaited “for more information to review the safety risks”.

Several airlines and regulators around the world have already grounded the Max 8 model following the crash.

    Is disruption likely?

Singapore’s aviation authority said the affected airlines include SilkAir, which operates six Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, as well as China Southern Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Shandong Airlines and Thai Lion Air.

It said it is working with airlines and Changi Airport to minimise the impact on passengers. Experts told the BBC that disruption was likely, however.

Aviation consultant Ian Thomas said: “This is sure to lead to significant flight cancellations and disruption to schedules as the airlines involved switch to other aircraft types (assuming they are available).”

The BBC’s Karishma Vaswani, who is at Changi Airport, reports orderly scenes. Some flights have been cancelled but it is not known if the suspension is to blame.

In the US, the country’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told airlines on Monday it believes Boeing’s 737 Max 8 model to be airworthy, despite the two fatal crashes.

What is a Boeing 737 Max aircraft?

The Boeing 737 Max fleet of aircraft are the latest in the company’s successful 737 line. The group includes the Max 7, 8, 9 and 10 models.

By the end of January, Boeing had delivered 350 of the Max 8 model out of 5,011 orders. A small number of Max 9s are also operating.

The Max 7 and 10 models, not yet delivered, are due for roll-out in the next few years.

The Max 8 that crashed on Sunday was one of 30 ordered as part of Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion. It underwent a “rigorous first check maintenance” on 4 February, the airline said.

Following last October’s Lion Air crash in Indonesia, investigators said the pilots had appeared to struggle with an automated system designed to keep the plane from stalling, a new feature of the jet.

It is not yet clear whether the anti-stall system was the cause of Sunday’s crash. Aviation experts say other technical issues or human error cannot be discounted.

    What have US authorities said?

US aviation officials have said the 737 Max 8 is airworthy and that it is too early to reach any conclusions or take any action.

US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Monday said the FAA would “take immediate and appropriate action” if a defect was found in the Max 8.

Boeing has confirmed that for the past few months it has been developing a “flight control software enhancement” for the aircraft.

Paul Hudson, the president of FlyersRights.org and a member of the FAA Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee, nonetheless called for the plane to be grounded.

“The FAA’s ‘wait and see’ attitude risks lives as well as the safety reputation of the US aviation industry,” Mr Hudson said in a statement on Monday.

Which UK carriers are flying 737 Max aircraft?

Both TUI and Norwegian say they will continue to operate 737 Max planes in and out of the UK.

The following Norwegian flights will use the 737 Max 8 aircraft on Tuesday.

    09:20 London Gatwick to Oslo-Gardermoen

    09:50 London Gatwick to Helsinki

But there was no information about flights beyond today.

The BBC has contacted TUI and is awaiting a response.

  • Ethiopian Airlines: Who are the victims?

Passengers from more than 30 countries were on board the Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi that crashed on Sunday, killing 157 people.

Among the victims were 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians and seven Britons, according to a passenger list from the doomed flight published by Ethiopian officials.

A number of passengers are believed to have been affiliated with the UN.

Here’s what is known about some of the victims.

    Kenya

Senior Capt Yared Mulugeta Gatechew, who was of Kenyan and Ethiopian heritage, was the main pilot on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302.

He had been working for the airline since November 2007.

He had a “commendable performance” with more than 8,000 hours in the air, the company said.

A friend of Capt Yared, Hassan Katende, said his “hair just stood up” when he heard that he had died.

In a BBC Amharic interview, Mr Katende said he learned of the crash through social media.

“I can’t sleep. It’s shocking. It’s very hard to believe. It’s really unbelievable,” he said

Among the victims was Cedric Asiavugwa, a third-year law student at Georgetown University.

He was travelling to Nairobi to attend the funeral of one of his relatives, reports say.

“With his passing, the Georgetown family has lost a stellar student, a great friend to many, and a dedicated champion for social justice across East Africa and the world,” Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor said.

Mr Asiavugwa was committed to issues of social justice, especially for refugees and other marginalised groups, the university said.

He also carried out research on subjects ranging from peace to food security in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.

Hussein Swaleh, a former Kenyan football administrator, also died in the crash, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed to the BBC.

The head of Kenya’s football federation tweeted that it was a “sad day for football”.

Mr Swaleh was reportedly returning home after officiating in a CAF Champions League match in Alexandria, Egypt, the CAF said in a statement.

Tributes have been pouring in for former Kenyan journalist Anthony Ngare, 49, who was killed in the crash.

Mr Ngare had just represented Kenya at a UN conference in Paris and was on his way to Nairobi.

He was formerly an editor at local media house Standard Group and had also worked at a government agency.

At the time of his death, he was working for the UN’s cultural agency, Unesco, as a deputy director of communications.

The Kenya National Commission for Unesco described Mr Ngare as “one of its shining stars”.

    Canada

Canada has confirmed that among the identified victims was Nigerian-born Professor Pius Adesanmi, the director of Carleton University’s Institute of African Studies.

“The contributions of Pius Adesanmi to Carleton are immeasurable,” said Pauline Rankin, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

“He worked tirelessly to build the Institute of African Studies, to share his boundless passion for African literature and to connect with and support students. He was a scholar and teacher of the highest calibre who leaves a deep imprint on Carleton.”

Benoit-Antoine Bacon, president and vice-chancellor of Global Affairs Canada, said: “Pius Adesanmi was a towering figure in African and post-colonial scholarship and his sudden loss is a tragedy.”

Nigeria’s writers, scholars and journalists reacted to the news with “great shock and sadness”.

Prof Adesanmi was travelling to Nairobi to take part in a conference organised by the African Union, reports say.

Danielle Moore, 24, was travelling to a UN environment conference in Nairobi.

On 9 March, she posted a message on Facebook: “I’m so excited to share that I’ve been selected to attend and am currently en route to the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya with United Nations Association In Canada and #CanadaServiceCorps / #LeadersToday!

“Over the next week I’ll have the opportunity to discuss global environmental issues, share stories, and connect with other youth and leaders from all over the world. I feel beyond privileged to be receiving this opportunity, and want to share as much with folks back home.”

Ms Moore studied marine biology at Dalhousie University and later at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences in 2015.

She was working both as a member of the clean ocean advocacy group Ocean Wise and as an education lead at the charity Canada Learning Code.

  • Ethiopian Airlines crash: British dad’s ‘pride’ for ‘loving’ daughter

The father of a British woman who was on the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed on Sunday has spoken of his pride for his daughter’s achievements.

Adrian Toole said it was “tragic” that 36-year-old Joanna would not be able to achieve more in her career with the UN.

Tributes have also been paid to Kenyan and British dual national Joseph Waithaka, who was also among the 149 passengers who died.

The Foreign Office said at least seven Britons were on the flight.

The crash happened at 08:44 local time (05:44 GMT), six minutes after the months-old Boeing 737 Max-8 took off.

Eight crew members also died, the airline said.

Mr Toole said he last spoke to his daughter, who was from Exmouth but was living in Rome, on Friday evening.

He told Devon Live she was a “very soft and loving person” and that they were “still in a state of shock” over her death.

“Joanna was genuinely one of those people who you never heard a bad word about.”

Speaking to the BBC, he paid tribute to her 15 years working in international animal welfare organisations: “I’m very proud of what she achieved. It’s just tragic that she couldn’t carry on to further her career and achieve more.”

“She was very well known in her own line of business and we’ve had many tributes already paid to her,” he added.

“She was very well known in her own line of business and we’ve had many tributes already paid to her,” he added.

    ‘Wonderful human being’

He said he remembered when she was a small child she had tried to save badgers from being run over on a new road near her home.

Ms Toole worked for the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), was travelling to the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi.

The director of the FAO, Manuel Barange, tweeted: “So profoundly sad and lost for words at the loss of our wonderful @FAOfish officer @JoannaToole”.

“A wonderful human being, who loved her work with a passion. Our love to her family and loved ones.”

Joseph Waithaka – a 55-year-old Kenyan and British dual national – was also killed in the crash.

His son, Ben Kuria said he was still in shock after hearing that his father, who moved to the UK in 2004, was on board the flight.

Mr Kuria described him as a “generous” man who “loved justice”.

Mr Waithaka lived in Hull and worked for the Humberside Probation Trust before returning to live in Kenya in 2015.

    He had three children.

Mr Kuria said he had seen his father in Croydon, south London on Saturday when he had been in the UK visiting relatives.

They had a meal together and said goodbye before his father caught a flight to Addis Ababa, he said.

“I gave him a hug and shook his hand because in my culture it’s more about the handshake than it is about the hug,” he told BBC News.

“And I said we’ll probably see you at some point soon. We usually spend a bit more time saying goodbye, but yesterday it kind of just felt routine.”

Ethiopian Airlines said it had contacted the families of all the victims, who came from 35 nations – including 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians and eight Americans.

The cause of the disaster is not yet known. However, the pilot had reported difficulties and had asked to return to Addis Ababa, the airline said.

Another plane of the same model was involved in a crash less than five months ago when a Lion Air flight crashed into the sea near Indonesia with nearly 190 people on board.

Midfielder Richard Senanu is set to join the Asante Kotoko team for their trip to Zambia to play Zesco United in the CAF Confederation Cup after making an injury return.

The hard working defensive midfielder has been out for two weeks after sustaining the injury in the Porcupine Warriors 2-1 win over Zesco United in Kumasi a fortnight ago.

Senanu was expected to be included in the team against Al Hilal last Sunday but failed a last minute match fitness test.

  • Big Bang: K-pop star quits showbiz amid ‘sex bribery’ claims

One of South Korea’s most successful boyband stars has announced his retirement from showbiz, a day after he was charged with supplying prostitutes to business investors.

Seungri will be leaving the five-piece group Big Bang, who have sold over 140 million records since their 2006 debut and are known as the “Kings of K-pop”.

The 28-year-old wrote on Instagram: “I have decided to retire because the controversy has become so big.”

    He has denied procuring prostitutes.

Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, had already cancelled all planned engagements in February, and the March shows of his solo tour.

In a statement he apologised to his fans, and promised to “sincerely participate in investigations into all allegations”.

    What’s he accused of?

Local media reports have linked Seungri to “sex bribery” – or providing sex services to entice foreign investors in his company Yuri Holdings, which manages his entertainment and restaurant businesses.

The lobbying is alleged to have happened at nightclubs in Seoul, South Korea’s capital.

Prostitution is illegal in South Korea.

It is alleged that Seungri tried to obtain prostitutes for clients through a group messaging chat in 2015. Messages from the app KakaoTalk have emerged which appear to show him urging a staff member to make the arrangements.

The singer was also questioned by police in February over reports of drug-taking and sexual assault at the Burning Sun club, where he was a public relations director.

    How has South Korea reacted?

Seungri, who was once described as “the Great Gatsby of Korea” for his lavish lifestyle, has a gigantic fanbase – but some had called for him to leave Big Bang as the scandal swept the country.

A petition surfaced last week calling for him to step aside after causing “unrecoverable damage to the group’s reputation”.

The singer said in his Instagram statement: “I have faced heavy criticism from the public for the last month and-a-half and I’m being probed by all investigative authorities in the country.

“As I’ve been branded as a ‘national traitor’, I cannot stand the fact that I’m harming others for my own sake.”

A former supporter replied to the post saying: “I’m so embarrassed at myself for being your fan for the last 10 years.”

Others pledged to stand by Seungri and the band. Fan @_nhungnhim29 wrote simply: “We’ll never let you go.”

Shares in the Seungri’s talent agency, YG Entertainment Inc, fell 15.6% on Monday, the day his retirement was announced, reaching their lowest level since November 2018.

Seungri isn’t the first member of Big Bang to be embroiled in controversy, however.

In 2011, band leader G-Dragon was investigated for smoking marijuana, which is illegal in South Korea, but was released without charge.

Another member, rapper T.O.P, was handed a 10-month suspended prison sentence for marijuana use in 2017.

How big a deal are Bigbang?

In South Korea they are showbiz royalty – but their popularity has spread across Asia and the rest of the world.

In 2016, Forbes magazine named G-Dragon as the most influential person under 30 in Asia’s entertainment and sports industries.

An example of the band’s fame in action: G-Dragon is currently performing his two-year term of military service – which is mandatory for able-bodied men in South Korea. When it began, he got such a deluge of supportive letters that his army base ran out of paper to print them on, and fans had to be urged to show restraint.

Seungri was scheduled to start his own military service on 25 March. His agency said this week that he was still on course to join the army.

  • Frimpong Boateng commission 10 dams in four regions

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng has commissioned 10 dams in four regions across Northern Ghana.

This is to help communities have all-year-round access to water for irrigation especially during the dry season and eventually reduce the impact of climate change on their livelihoods.

Read: Government to rehabilitate 10 dams

“Our reservoirs get dried up within the year, and our women have to walk far distances in search of water. The livestock too suffer. So we are grateful for the rehabilitation,” Chief of Adaboya in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, Naa Ayidaana Atampugre noted.

The dams are expected to be constructed within 6 months.

Read: Where are the factories and dams – Mahama asks Akufo-Addo

The intervention falls within a 4-year project being implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Adaptation Fund.

The project is seeking to enhance the resilience and adaptive capacity of rural communities to climate change impacts and risks on water resources in Northern Ghana.

In this area, an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events is worsening water scarcity and impacting negatively on livelihood activities of communities.

The project is also providing boreholes to improve access to clean water in the over 50 communities being covered.

As part of the project, trees are being planted around the dams to increase the capacity of the catchment area to retain flood water, prevent erosion and siltation of the reservoirs.

“The Government is happy to be working with UNDP and other state agencies to provide these interventions, with funding from the Adaptation Fund Board. Please protect the water bodies, stop cutting the trees and replant more trees”, Minister of Environment, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng admonished.

Also, at the commissioning of the dams was the Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP, Mr. Louis Kuukpen, who indicated that giving the communities access to clean water is in line with the objective of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which aims to ensure clean water access and proper sanitation for all by 2030. He also urged the communities to own the initiatives and take care of them.

“This project is very important to us because it responds to climate action. As we invest a lot of resources in it, we will like the Chiefs and people of the communities to see the projects as their own, maintain them and keep them for generations to come”, advised Mr. Kuukpen.

The communities are also being supported with other interventions such as shea butter and groundnut oil extraction, beekeeping, fish farming, tree seedling nurseries and dry season gardening, all to help reduce the impacts of climate change on their livelihoods.

  • Nancy Pelosi: ‘I’m not for impeachment,’ slams Trump as ‘not worth it’

House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi does not currently support impeaching President Donald Trump despite thinking that he’s unfit for the country’s highest office, according to a Washington Post magazine interview published Monday.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi said. “This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before.

But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

The California Democrat also said that Trump is “ethically,” “intellectually,” and “curiosity-wise” unfit for office.

“No, I don’t think he’s fit to be President of the United States,” she said.
Pelosi’s comments published Monday are perhaps her strongest yet against the issue, but the speaker has signaled for months her resistance to pushing for impeachment.

“It’s not someplace that I think we should go,” Pelosi said on CNN’s “State of the Union” in November 2017 when asked whether Democrats would seek to oust the President if they regained the majority.

The comments come days after House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerry Nadler announced a sweeping investigation, sending letters to 81 people and entities — including the White House, the Justice Department, senior campaign officials, Trump Organization officials and the President’s sons – into possible corruption, obstruction of justice and abuses of power. Democrats say they’re conducting the rigorous oversight of the administration that Republicans refused to do the first two years of Trump’s presidency.

While Pelosi’s comments may help Democrats in competitive districts distance themselves from a divisive topic, they could frustrate some of those now in the middle of congressional investigations.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, told CNN he’d “put it differently” than Pelosi.

“The Constitution calls for impeachment in cases of bribery, treason and other high crimes and misdemeanors,” he said. “So the legal case should indeed be compelling, the evidence should be overwhelming and the politics should be bipartisan. He may not be worth it but of course that’s not the standard. The country is certainly worth it if the Constitution and the public interest demand it.”

“There have, of course, been cases when impeachment investigations have been unifying, as with Richard Nixon,” Raskin added.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff told CNN that he agreed with Pelosi and that a “failed impeachment isn’t a good idea.” The California Democrat added it doesn’t make sense to move down that road “in the absence of very graphic evidence.”

A few Democratic members of Congress have already introduced articles of impeachment. Last week, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a freshman Democratic lawmaker from Michigan, said she would file such a resolution this month, claiming “every single colleague” of hers believed that the President has committed impeachable offenses. Rep. Brad Sherman, who has drafted articles of impeachment against the President, disputed Pelosi’s comment that Trump “isn’t worth it.”

“You don’t impeach Trump for him, you impeach Trump for the Constitution,” Sherman, a California Democrat, told reporters.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat and a member of House leadership, said that pro-impeachment House Democrats “attract extraordinary amount of attention” even though there are only a “handful” of them.

“At the end of the day, there are 239 members of the House Democratic caucus and the overwhelming majority of those members have made clear that we should proceed with caution with respect to impeachment,” Jeffries said.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy embraced Pelosi’s remarks, arguing Democrats have no basis to impeach the President and are just trying to damage his political prospects.

“I think the speaker is correct in saying they won’t impeach him,” he said.

  • Osu Castle not security zone Museum Board exposes Joy News

The Ghana Museums and Monument Board has stated categorically that Osu Christiansborg Castle is a museum and not a security installation as Joy News is fighting to make Ghanaians to think.

Read: Osu Castle Militia: President Akufo-Addo was fully aware – Manasseh insists

It would be recalled that on Thursday, March 7, 2019, Joy News aired a documentary produced by its investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, claiming that a “militia” named De-Eye Group believed to be linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was training at the Castle.

The station described the Castle, the former seat of government as a security zone.

But Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah came out on March 8, 2019 to dismiss the claim that Castle was a security zone and that the group was linked to the NPP.

Joy News has remained insistent that the Castle is a security zone.

However, the Ghana Museums and Monument Board in a statement said the Castle seized to be a security zone since March 5, 2017 when President Akufo-Addo declared and inaugurated it as a Presidential Museum for leadership and governance.

The statement signed by the Acting Executive Director of Ghana Museums and Monument Board, Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah, said “the Osu Castle is not a security installation. The military and security sensitivities associated with it have since been withdrawn.”

  • Meet the fans who are standing up for Michael Jackson

“He was shy. He was also funny. He was also very sweet.”

Anika Kotecha is remembering the Michael Jackson she knew. The one she visited at Neverland, and who used to phone her up to marvel at her trips to the supermarket.

“He’d go, ‘You went to the shops? Oh wow, what was that like?’

“And for me, I just went to pick up some bread and milk, but for him that’s amazing – because he can’t go and do that.

“It’s quite sad as well, but he was just the nicest guy.”

Read: Michael Jackson ‘abused us hundreds of times’

Kotecha says meeting the Man in the Mirror singer makes it hard for her to believe the rumours and accusations of child abuse that dogged him in life and in death.

“It does put a slant on these things,” she says.

“You compare it to the person you knew, and I feel stronger in my convictions because of that.”

Kotecha is speaking to the BBC after the broadcast of Leaving Neverland – a four-hour TV documentary which laid out the case against Jackson in gruelling, graphic detail last week on Channel 4 and HBO.

It focuses on two men, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, both in their late 30s, who allege the star befriended them as children, then sexually abused them for years.

The Jackson family has already fired back at the film, calling it a “public lynching” and the “ultimate betrayal” – and they’re not the only ones to dispute the claims.

Fans have congregated around the hashtags #MJInnocent and #MJFam, posting lengthy rebuttals to the documentary on YouTube, social media and specially-constructed websites.

They’ve protested outside Channel 4’s headquarters; and even bought adverts on London buses, carrying the slogan: “Facts don’t lie, people do”.

Dan Reed, who directed Leaving Neverland, told the BBC that he and Jackson’s accusers had also been targeted by Jackson’s fans.

“There’s been a lot of horrible things said about me online and we’ve received a lot of emails, too,” he said a few days before the documentary was broadcast.

Read: Michael Jackson accuser: ‘Michael chose me’

“I’m amazed that people feel entitled to do that when they haven’t seen the film and don’t know anything about me and they know even less about Michael Jackson.”

On the last count, at least, he is wrong.

The fans behind the campaign include lawyers and journalists, who are forensically acquainted with Michael Jackson and the allegations against him.

“We surface court statements, investigations, including from the FBI, and previous statements that clearly conflict with the accusations and information presented in the HBO documentary,” says Tiffany, a US fan who posts under the name @RideTheBoogie.

“We felt very strongly we needed to be Michael’s voice,” says Kotecha, who, as an administrator of the MJInnocent.com website, helped organise the bus campaign.

“Because, ironically for someone whose entire career was based on his voice, he no longer has a voice.”

The movement to clear Jackson’s name has existed since he was first accused of molestation in 1993 (the case was later settled out of court for $23m), but it has become increasingly vocal since Leaving Neverland was announced in January.

A main thread of their argument concerns the credibility of Robson and Safechuck, both of whom previously testified that Jackson never abused them. They now say they felt pressured into supporting the singer.

Fans argue that Robson changed his story after being denied a role in a Jackson-themed Cirque Du Soleil production; and that he tried to sell a book detailing the abuse a year before he took his case to the courts.

They also note that both Robson and Safechuck have been unsuccessful in their attempts to sue the Jackson estate – although both men’s cases are now on appeal.

Read: Michael Jackson documentary on child sexual abuse shocks Sundance

    ‘Not one shred of evidence’

“If their allegations were to be true, this would be an atrocity,” says Damien Shields, an Australian fan who has written a book on Jackson’s music.

“These are very serious allegations of heinous crimes against innocent children. They [Robson and Safechuck] should be allowed to raise their voices and say what they want to say – but also, if you’re going to do that, you need to be prepared to be scrutinised.

“And there is really nothing that is convincing when you look at the whole picture, to make you say, ‘without doubt I believe these people’.”

Fans are also aggrieved that Leaving Neverland offers no right of reply to Jackson or his family.

Reed argues that the film features footage of Michael’s denials but Shields says those clips are irrelevant.

“During his life, Wade Robson and James Safechuck supported Michael Jackson. So it baffles me that [Dan Reed] says he’s included footage of Michael’s denials, when the specific allegations he’s made a four-hour film about, Michael never had a chance to reply to.”

Going back further, fans highlight Jackson’s acquittal on child abuse charges in 2005; and direct sceptics to unsealed FBI reports on the star, dating from 1993-4 and 2004-5, which found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

“Not one shred of evidence,” says Kotecha. “You’d have to be some kind of super-human to be able to hide even the slightest thing from the FBI.”

“He was under a 10-year investigation by the FBI, he had two raids on his home, he was on a very public trial,” agrees Matt Blank, a spokesperson for the Michael Jackson World Network fan club.

“All of this brought up no evidence of any abuse. So there’s a part of you that has to say, ‘With all of this scrutiny, why do we suddenly believe [these] two people… that have come forward and gone straight for the money pot?”

What about Jackson’s own admission that he shared his bed with children? Doesn’t that give him cause for concern?

“I come from a viewpoint [that] Michael lived a very different life than we could ever imagine,” Blank told BBC Radio 5 live. “And I think just as the world misunderstood him, he probably misunderstood the world as well, a little.

“There is a big difference between what we deem as odd behaviour [and] committing a crime. You shouldn’t mix those two together, because that’s a dangerous territory.”

Despite his misgivings, Blank says Jackson’s accusers “come across as very convincing” in Leaving Neverland. Kotecha also says she approached the documentary with an “open mind”.

“I am interested in what they have to say,” she says, “because if they can challenge my beliefs, then I will look into it further.”

And that’s something that stands out: Jackson’s fans are not, as Mr Shields puts it, “loopy conspiracy theorists,” but a group of people who’ve arrived at their position thoughtfully and sincerely, even if they find themselves on the wrong side of popular opinion.

    Mute Michael Jackson?

Tiffany, who is herself a survivor of sexual abuse, stresses that her defence of Jackson is not mere idol worship.

“The fact that I was abused helps me better understand people who are innocently accused, as well as the minds of those on the dark side,” she says.

“It’s far easier for many to believe accusations about a man they don’t understand or relate to. And, hey, it’s more much more thrilling to read and spread gossip than dispel myths, isn’t it?

“Missing from that equation is common sense and the review of justice system documents that contradict the accusations.

“As a victim of sexual abuse, I not only have a platform to motivate and inspire fellow victims, but I am compelled to fact-check the stories and credibility of potential victims.”

Nonetheless, defending Jackson has been a tough and, at times, lonely task.

“It’s exhausting and it affects me,” says Shields. “I can’t speak for everybody, but it definitely is taking a toll.”

And how does it change fans’ relationship to Jackson’s music?

“I have to be honest, it’s damaging it,” says Shields. “It’s putting a dampener on the pure bliss and joy and magic and escapism that artwork is supposed to provide us.”

    Tiffany disagrees.

“As fans, we’re used to the cadence of negative stories. Each passing wave grounds me to what I truly believe in.

“While others suggest that we ‘mute Michael Jackson’, I’m instead compelled to turn MJ up. I’m going to play his music every chance I get, as loud as my speakers will handle. I’ll continue to fight for what I believe is true.

“It is the least I can do for a man who means so much to me.”

  • Brexit: MPs to vote on Theresa May’s deal

MPs will vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal later after she secured “legally binding” changes to it following last-minute talks with the EU in Strasbourg.

The PM said the changes meant the Irish backstop – the insurance policy designed to avoid a hard border in Ireland – could not “become permanent”.

She insisted that she had delivered what Parliament asked her to do.

Tory Brexiteers are taking legal advice on the changes but Labour said the PM had secured nothing new.

Ahead of Tuesday’s vote, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has warned if the deal was voted down, there would be “no third chance”.

Last time Mrs May’s withdrawal agreement was put to Parliament in January, it was voted down by a historic margin of 230.

    What was agreed?

Two documents were agreed after Mrs May flew to the European Parliament on Monday with Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay for last-minute talks with Mr Juncker and EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

The first is a “joint legally binding instrument” on the withdrawal agreement which the UK could use to start a “formal dispute” against the EU if it tried to keep the UK tied into the backstop indefinitely.

The other is a joint statement about the UK and EU’s future relationship which commits to replacing the backstop with an alternative by December 2020.

The legal view of the changes taken by Attorney General Geoffrey Cox is likely to be an important factor in the lead-up to the Commons vote.

Mrs May is expected to chair a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning before the motion is debated in the Commons in the afternoon and votes are held in the evening.

Many MPs fear the backstop would keep the UK in a customs arrangement with the EU indefinitely.

After talks with Mr Juncker, the prime minister said she “passionately believed” the new assurances addressed their concerns.

“MPs were clear that legal changes were needed to the backstop. Today we have secured legal changes,” she said.

“Now is the time to come together to back this improved Brexit deal and deliver on the instruction of the British people.”

The Democratic Unionist Party, whose support Mrs May relies on in the Commons, said it would be “scrutinising the text line by line” before deciding whether to back the deal.

Monday morning government blues have been replaced by Tuesday morning nervous hopes.

The government does not suddenly expect its Brexit deal to be ushered through at speed, cheered on by well-wishers.

It does, however, believe that Monday night’s double act in Strasbourg by Theresa May and Jean Claude Juncker puts it, to quote one cabinet minister, “back in the races”.

The extra assurances wrought from weeks of talks with the EU will move some of the prime minister’s objectors from the “no” column to the “yes”.

The EU warns ‘this is it’

Mr Juncker has warned MPs they would be putting everything at risk if they voted down the deal.

“In politics sometimes you get a second chance,” he said. “It is what we do with that second chance that counts. There will be no third chance.”

He added: “Let us speak crystal clear about the choice – it is this deal or Brexit might not happen at all.”

Ministers have insisted the documents agreed would “strengthen and improve” both the withdrawal agreement from the EU and the political declaration on the future relationship.

Another document will also be put forward by the government, known as a “unilateral declaration”.

This outlines the UK’s position that there is nothing to prevent it from leaving the backstop arrangement if discussions on a future relationship with the EU break down and there is no prospect of an agreement.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer dismissed the unilateral declaration, telling the BBC “unless the other side agrees that only gets you so far”.

He told Radio 4’s Today the other announcements “were all there last time” MPs voted and “therefore there are no changes” to either the exit agreement or declaration on future relations.

He said Mr Cox, the government’s chief law officer, needed to make a statement in the Commons and take questions from MPs.

Independent Group MP Chris Leslie said the government’s “Brexit fudge fools nobody”.

Conservative Dominic Grieve, a former attorney general, said he had looked carefully at the documents overnight and concluded that the changes negotiated did not make “any significant difference” to the backstop.

“It does not allow the UK the right to terminate the backstop at the timing of its own choice,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

The UK is set to leave the EU on 29 March 2019 after voting to leave by nearly 52% to 48% – 17.4m votes to 16.1m – in 2016.

    What could happen this week?

Theresa May’s deal to face a “meaningful vote” in Parliament later on Tuesday.

If it’s rejected, a further vote has been promised for Wednesday on whether the UK should leave without a deal.

If that no-deal option is rejected, MPs could get a vote on Thursday on whether to request a delay to Brexit from the EU.

  • Ed Sheeran’s ‘wild lifestyle’ pond to be investigated by council

Ed Sheeran’s Suffolk estate will be inspected by council officials to make sure his pond is there for wildlife and not “a wild lifestyle”.

Some neighbours had been worried the pond would be used for swimming and watersports, which are against planning permission.

Suffolk Coastal District Council is to investigate to make sure the rules are being followed.

Other neighbours said they had “no problem with Ed Sheeran whatsoever”.

The wildlife pond, featuring a jetty, steps and sheds, was installed after being granted planning permission in January 2017.

But last year the council questioned its possible use for recreational purposes during an “enforcement investigation”.

That case was closed when a fresh planning application said the jetty and steps were “to form interest” and allow for emergency access and the sheds were to cover the borehole and pump.

    ‘Quite like the guy’

At the time, neighbour Tony Robinson said: “I believe that the development of the site is more about creating an environment for a wild lifestyle rather than the actual wildlife.”

The 71-year-old said on Monday that comment “still holds true”, but he doubted the pool had been used for swimming over the winter months.

Another neighbour, Kenny Cattee, said there was “no problem with Ed Sheeran whatsoever” and the matter had been settled.

“We’re not angry or furious, and we’ve got no further objections. We quite like the guy,” said Mr Cattee, 67.

A council spokesman asked for anyone with evidence of inappropriate use of the pond to provide it to the planning enforcement team.

Sheeran’s representatives have been contacted by the BBC for comment.

  • Conor McGregor: UFC star arrested in Miami for allegedly smashing fan’s phone

UFC star Conor McGregor has been arrested in Miami for allegedly smashing a fan’s phone as they tried to take pictures.

The Irish fighter is being charged with strong-armed robbery and misdemeanour criminal mischief, police said.

The alleged incident took place as the 30-year-old left the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel at 05:20 local time.

A police report says he knocked the phone out of the fan’s hand, stamped on it then picked it up and left with it.

“The victim attempted to take a picture of the defendant with his cell phone. The defendant slapped the victim’s phone out of his hand, causing it to fall to the floor,” a police report said.

“The defendant then stomped on the victim’s phone several times, damaging it. The defendant then picked up the victim’s phone and walked away with it, depriving him of it. The defendant was located and arrested.”

It added the alleged victim’s phone was valued at $1,000 (£760).

In a post on social media following his release, McGregor said: “Patience in this world is a virtue I continue to work on. I love my fans dearly. Thank you all.”

Last year, McGregor was ordered by a court to have anger management training and perform five days of community service in return for the dropping of criminal charges for attacking a bus containing rival UFC fighters.

The former two-weight champion has been in Florida preparing for his UFC comeback after losing his last fight to Khabib Nurmagomedov of Russia in October 2018.

That came a year after McGregor lost a boxing match, thought to be the most lucrative in history, to multiple world champion Floyd Mayweather.

American Mayweather earned a reported $100m (£76m) from the bout, with McGregor thought to have pocketed $30m (£23m).

  • 2nd teacher licensure exams slated for March 25, 26

The National Teaching Council (NTC) is expected to organise the second edition of the Teacher Licensure examinations on March 25 and 26, 2019.

The Council says it is expecting about 15, 000 trained teachers to take part in the exam.

This will include those who could not write the maiden exam and over 7,000 teachers who failed in the first exam.

The Trainee Teachers Association of Ghana (TTAG) has blamed the council for the failure, saying it did not prepare adequately.

The Council has however assured that adequate preparations will be made for the second edition but insists the modalities will not change.

    Initial resistance

The licensure examination was initially resisted fiercely by some teacher unions and a section of the newly trained teachers who threatened to hit the streets in protest.

While the trainees accused the NTC of devising means to deny them employment, the teacher unions described the timetable for the conduct of the examination as “hastily put together”.

However, the NTC strongly dismissed the position of the teacher unions, saying that since 2016, it embarked on sensitisation exercises to educate all stakeholders and the Teacher Trainees Association, Ghana (TTAG) on the examination.

The NTC said it engaged with the vice-chancellors and registrars of the universities, the executives of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the Conference of District Directors of Education, among other, on the examination.

However, after a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the unions, which initially expressed their reservations about the examination, later rescinded their decision.
