  • Internet banking fraud cases rise 44.6%

The number of internet fraud cases reported by commercial banks operating in Ghana to the Central Bank in 2017 increased to 1,418 from 1,001 in 2016.

Grace Akrofi, advisor at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), who stated this at a financial crime sensitization forum Thursday at Ada, said the total value reported for fraud or attempted fraud amounted to approximately GH¢190.38 million.

Read: Cyber crime rises but industry recovers GH¢160m in 2017

Of these, 16 percent, representing GH¢30.08 million, was recorded as losses while 84 percent, representing GH¢160.30 million, was recovered.

She mentioned suppression of cash and deposits, card fraud, manipulation of accounts and negotiable instruments, cheque fraud, as well as forgery and alteration of documents as some of the fraud cases.

“A key concern to us is the widening gap between the date of occurrence and detection. As you all know, fraud is a criminal offence and any delay in its detection could have a significant impact on the performance of the industry as a whole.

“In the same vein, any delay in the investigation of the cases and subsequent prosecution of culprits may also have far-reaching consequences on the stability of the banking sector.”

Read: Most banks not equipped to block cybercrime Analyst

Ms Akrofi further lamented the increasing involvement of bank staff in the reported fraud cases.

According to her, while most deposit-taking institutions were increasing their staff intake, especially at the entry level, most of them do not have the capacity to adequately vet the new employees.

She, therefore, appealed for the adoption of the most secure way to vet both contract and permanent staff, who are employed into the banking sector.

A research done in November 2016 by the African Union (AU) Commission, in partnership with Symantec, found out that Ghana was among the top most attacked countries in Africa.

Read: Urgent need to address growing cyber security challenges

The study also disclosed that in 2016, there were more than 400,000 malware incidents, 44 million spam incidents and 280,000 bots incidents in Ghanaian institutions.

Narrating news of cyber incidents in Bangladesh and Malaysia recently, which took the entire global banking system by storm, she said “the Bank of Ghana continues to receive data on the several attempted cyber incidents be it unauthorized access to bank servers, card cloning, phishing, vishing or ransomware attacks.

In effect, the fraudsters are getting more sophisticated.”

She got a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a “thief” in the loss to Naomi Osaka.

The American said it was “sexist” to have been penalised a game.

“The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women,” Simon said in a statement.

“We do not believe that this was done last night.”

He also called for coaching to be allowed “across the sport”. Umpire Carlos Ramos penalised Williams after seeing her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, making a hand gesture. The Frenchman later admitted he was trying to coach his player.

The head of the United States Tennis Association, which organises the US Open, said men “are badgering the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens”.

“We watch the guys do this all the time,” USTA chief Katrina Adams said.

“There’s no equality when it comes to what the men are doing to the chair umpires and what the women are doing, and I think there has to be some consistency across the board.

“I’m all about gender equality and I think when you look at that situation these are conversations that will be imposed in the next weeks. We have to treat each other fairly and the same.”

Those views were shared by BBC tennis presenter Sue Barker, who said: “I’ve sat courtside watching the men ranting at umpires and they haven’t been given a violation.”

Umpire should not have pushed Williams to the limit – Djokovic

Novak Djokovic was asked about Williams’ outbursts after he won a third men’s US Open title on Sunday by beating Juan Martin del Potro.

He said the interventions by umpire Carlos Ramos were “unnecessary” and said they “changed the course of the match”.

“I have my personal opinion that maybe the chair umpire should not have pushed Serena to the limit, especially in a Grand Slam final,” the Serb said.

But Djokovic said he did not see things in the same way as WTA chief Simon, adding: “I don’t understand from where he’s coming with that statement.”

The 14-time Grand Slam champion also described the situation as “tough” for the umpire and said “we have to empathise with him”.

    Controversy in women’s doubles

A day after Osaka was left in tears during an awkward and toxic trophy presentation in which Williams urged booing to stop, there was more controversy in the women’s doubles.

American CoCo Vandeweghe and Australian Ashleigh Barty said they were hustled off court shortly before the men’s final, unable to deliver a victory speech after receiving their trophy.

“We couldn’t thank anyone. I think that was poor form,” said American Vandeweghe. “Maybe they’ll do us right in Australia since the U.S. couldn’t do me right.”

Barty added they were rushed off because “the men needed to start”.

“To be honest, I don’t think they [Djokovic and Del Potro] would have worried if they were 10 or 15 minutes delayed,” the Australian said.

    Inconsistency ‘bothers’ Azarenka

Williams was given a code violation in the final after Ramos ruled that her coach Patrick Mouratoglou was signalling tactics from the stands.

After the match, Mouratoglou admitted he had been coaching, but added “I don’t think she looked at me” and “everybody does it”.

The incident has raised debate on the consistency of the coaching rules which state:

Players can not receive coaching during a Grand Slam match (including the warm-up). Communications of any kind, audible or visible, between a player and a coach may be construed as coaching.
On-court coaching is allowed by the WTA at its Tour-level events.
Coaching from the stands is allowed in the US Open qualifying rounds between points.
Simon said: “We think the issue of coaching needs to be addressed and should be allowed across the sport. The WTA supports coaching through its on-court coaching rule, but further review is needed.”

Belarusian two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka said it “bothers” her that there is “too much of a grey area” in these rules.

“The umpire can choose to exercise it or not,” she said in a live video on her Instagram page. “We either have a rule for all times or we don’t. That is my problem with it.

“Why is there so much difference? I don’t get that. There has to be a clear rule to it. If it happened in the men’s match, it would not happen again. That is the problem. It is the inconsistency.”

  • Five talking points from Ghana’s defeat to Kenya in Nairobi

Ghana lost to Kenya in their second group game in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.

An own goal from defender Nicholas Opoku gave the Kenyans their first three points in Group F.

Joy Sports Benedict Owusu who watched the game at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi has put together five key talking points from the game.

GHANA STILL IN SEARCH OF A POTENT GOAL SCORER

Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan has proven over the years that he is one of the best players/strikers Ghana has ever produced.

No need to talk too much about Gyan’s achievement for Ghana but we have still not been able to identify the next Gyan should the 32-year old finally hang his boots.

With the Kayserispor player missing in Ghana’s game against Kenya, the Black Stars after creating so many chances were hugely disappointing in front of goal.

Striker Majeed Waris and Raphael Dwamena still made Gyan look good even in his recent days of injuries and inconsistency at club level.

    2. IMPRESSIVE ANDY YIADOM HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE

Right back Andy Yiadom was Ghana’s best player on the pitch in the game. He showed a level none of the players exhibited in the game.

Read: Kenya fans tip Ghana as favourites in AFCON qualifier

The Reading player proved to be the only player with a sense of purpose in the game, was very decisive with his passes and movement was a delight to watch.

His level showed a player who has been playing week in week out for his club and when I thought he was out of gas, that was when the young man proved to be strong and quick.

If he stays fit and keeps his consistency, Andy will stay with the national team for a very long time.

    3. BEAUTIFUL FOOTBALL DOESN’T ALWAYS WIN GAMES

Often times, people who watch football will applaud to a team’s passing and ability to keep the ball more in a game, but what is the benefit if that team is not able to score on the day.

A similar thing happened to the Black Stats as the dominated the game with possession of 61%.

    https://www.facebook.com/theindependentnewspaper/videos/1172713882866694/

Coach Kwasi Appiah and the players must know that at times it is good to win ugly especially when you come up against sides like Kenya.

This is a big lesson and as midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah stated in an interview ” this is a wake-up call for the team.

    4. DANIEL OPARE WAS LOST AT LEFT BACK

Daniel Opare is known as a right back but with no natural left back in the team, coach Kwasi Appiah had to improvise and use the Belgian based player at left back.

That decision backfired as the former FC Porto player showed he would have been better off in his natural position.

Baba Rahman has returned from injury and Lumor Agbenyenu was injured prior to this game so Opare who had played that role before was handed that task, but he failed to deliver.

Opare had to be replaced in the second half by Harrison Afful, who has not played in the left back position for a long time.

    5. CHRISTIAN ATSU NEEDS TO SIT UP AND NEEDS MORE PLAYING TIME AT NEWCASTLE UNITED

Christian Atsu when Kwasi Appiah first introduced him in the Black Stars was a delight to watch, his runs and decision making brilliant, but it looks like the 25-year old is gradually losing it.

Atsu ordinarily would have carried the team and ensured at least not less than 2 goals were scored but he was just a passenger in the game as his runs and decision making were suspect.

He needs to prove at club level where it is becoming increasingly difficult to get playing time why Kwasi Appiah must overlook other players and still be inviting him into the Black Stars.

  • Kwadwo, Dwamena and Afful dropped from starting XI for Kenya clash

In-form returnee Kwadwo Asamoah and Levante striker Raphael Dwamena have been dropped from his starting line-up to face Kenya on Saturday in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Nairobi.

Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has excluded trusted right-back Harrison Afful from his team in favour of England-based Andy Yiadom for the match at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Appiah also pulled a surprise when he named Majeed Waris ahead of Levante attacker Dwamena who was recently thought to be ahead of the latter in the pecking order.

But the Black Stars manager who has recently keenly observed both players clearly thinks the Nantes in-form player deserves to start ahead of Dwamena who is also playing well.

The decision looks to have come from the fact that he is deploying just one attacker in anticipation of a big fight in midfield for the ball.

Kwadwo Asamoah’s absence has also raised eyebrows but it is clear the coach wants to give the Inter Milan player the chance to observe things from the bench before giving him the chance to play for the country for the first time in four years.

Afriyie Acquah is starting in midfield with US-based Ebenezer Ofori and Christian Atsu as well as Edwin Gyasi.

Kwadwo Asamoah who is making a return to the team after four years will start from the bench.

  • Ghana loses certified female plumber

Plumbing used to be a male-dominated profession in the country until three decades ago, when Dorothy Naana Kissiedu nee Dorothy Aikins, changed the narrative and blazed a trail as perhaps, Ghana’s first certified female plumber.

Unfortunately, the pacesetter who emerged as a role model passed on last June 29 at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital in Accra after a short illness. Naana 58, would be buried coming Saturday, September 8 in Takoradi.

These days, if you request plumbing services, chances are that a female, would come knocking on your door or ring the bell thanks to Naana.

Until her death, she was an Assistant Director of Education and also an Assistant Chief Examiner at the Technical Examination Unit, Ghana Education Service and was the first female head of the Plumbing department at Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI).

Naana did not reach the level she attained on a silver platter but through perseverance, she overcame several challenges as the only female rubbing shoulders with male plumbers.

It would be recalled that in 1986 The Mirror featured her in a front-page story headlined: Distinction Plumber Without A Job.

The story drew attention to her inability to get employed due to her gender status even though she had. passed with distinction and emerged top of her plumbing class at the Accra Technical Training Center in 1982. After graduation, she remained. unemployed for over two years because companies were sceptical of her capabilities and were often told: ” you are a woman” and sidelined. The position was given to the male colleagues she had outperformed as a distinction plumber.

    A victim of gender discrimination

Naana did not give up but pursued further studies at various institutions, at home and abroad to hone her skills.

She undertook advanced plumbing courses at the then Takoradi Polytechnic (1984), attended the University of Education, Winneba ( 2002 -2003) for a Certificate in Education and later in 2009 obtained the Bachelor of Education VOC/TECH from same college She also pursued a two year advanced plumbing and gas course in Germany.

After a stint at construction firm A Lang in 1986 following the publication she transitioned to the educational sector in 1988 and was employed as a tutor at the Accra Technical Training Center and moved to TTI in1999 where she rose to become the first female head in 2003.

Naana who hailed from Cape Coast left behind a husband Kwabena Atta Kissiedu a Takoradi based Chartered Accountant and two children Kwesi Kissiedu an oil and gas engineer with Halliburton Company Limited and Dorothy Aku Kissiedu a Graphic Designer.
