  • Hundreds escape Libya prison amid deadly clashes in Tripoli

Some 400 prisoners have escaped from a facility near the Libyan capital Tripoli amid deadly violence between militia groups in the city, police say.

“The detainees were able to force open the doors” in order to leave the Ain Zara prison, the local police said.

They added that guards, fearing for their lives, were unable to prevent the breakout following riots at the jail.

Clashes between militias in the city have led Libya’s UN-backed government to declare a state of emergency.

The incident on Sunday took place during armed violence between rival factions around the facility, which houses only male inmates.

Many of the prisoners held at the Ain Zara prison in south-east Tripoli were reportedly supporters of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and had been found guilty of killings during the uprising against his government in 2011.

Separately on Sunday, two people were killed and several others were injured when rockets hit a camp in Libya’s capital housing hundreds of displaced people, according to emergency services and witnesses.

Libya’s Ministry of Health reports that some 47 people, including civilians, have died in rival militia clashes in Tripoli over the past week, with dozens more injured.

A UN-backed government is nominally in power in the capital, but militias occupy much of the rest of the country.

    Why is there violence?

The violence broke out last week when militias from a city to the south of Tripoli attacked southern areas, leading to fighting with local militias that support the internationally recognised government, the Government of National Accord (GNA).

The GNA has described the clashes as “an attempt to derail peaceful political transition” in the country, adding that it “could not remain silent over the attacks on Tripoli and its suburbs, which is a violation of security in the capital and of citizens’ safety”.

Human Rights Watch has also condemned the violence, adding that at least 18 of the dead were reportedly civilians, among them four children.

Hundreds of migrants trapped by the fighting have been moved to other detention centres, while the city’s airport was closed for two days on Friday.

Libya has faced continuing chaos since Nato-backed militia forces, some of them rivals, overthrew long-serving ruler Colonel Gaddafi in October 2011.

What has the international community said?

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the “indiscriminate use of force is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law” and has urged “all parties to grant humanitarian relief for those in need”.

On Saturday, the US, UK, France and Italy called for an immediate end to deadly violence in Libya’s capital.

A joint statement said attempts “to weaken the legitimate Libyan authorities and hinder the ongoing political process are not acceptable”.

“We are calling on the armed groups to immediately stop all military action and warn those who seek to undermine stability, in Tripoli or elsewhere in Libya, that they will be made accountable for it,” the joint statement read.

However successive attempts at a truce have so far failed to stop the fierce fighting between several militias.

  • More injury trouble for Ghana as Adams is forced off early in Bundesliga fixture

The centre-back was replaced in the first half after picking up an injury in Die Kraichgauer’s 3-1 home victory.

Nagelsmann’s post-match comments have hung a cloud over Adams’ availability for Ghana’s Afcon qualifier, having told pressmen the club “fear the worst” with regards to the injury.

Inter star Asamoah may have returned to action on Saturday but it is currently unclear if he would be available for national assignment as it is feared he may be asked by the Nerazzurri to catch some rest during the international break after an injury concern earlier this week.

Boye, on the other hand, is reported to have no chance of making a quick return from an injury picked up while in club action on Tuesday.

The change in plans came as a result of flight issues for the team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya.

  • Uganda’s pop star, Bobi Wine arrives in US for treatment

Ugandan pop star and MP Bobi Wine has arrived in the US for medical treatment following accusations he was tortured and beaten while in military custody.

The former rapper was initially prevented from leaving the country but was cleared to fly out on Friday.

He, and 32 opposition politicians, were charged with treason last week over the alleged stoning of President Yoweri Museveni’s convoy.

Read: Ugandan MPs Bobi Wine, Zaake cleared to seek treatment abroad

Bobi Wine was later granted bail. The army denies allegations of torture.

On Friday, police confirmed that Bobi Wine had been cleared to fly out of the country for specialised treatment after the government sent a team of nine doctors to examine him.

His lawyer, Robert Amsterdam, said the pop star had also been violently re-arrested at the airport on Thursday “even though the judge had let him have his passport because he needed to leave the country for medical reasons”.

A police spokesman had confirmed on Twitter that Bobi Wine was being given a medical examination because of the allegations of torture.

Police said that another opposition MP, Francis Zaake, who was also trying to go abroad for treatment, had been “trying to flee the country and accordingly apprehended him”.

On Friday, supporters of Bobi Wine held protests in the capital, Kampala.

Pictures shared on social media showed plumes of smoke rising in the streets, with local media reporting that the protests were confined to Kamwokya slum, where the MP grew up.

On Monday Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared on crutches during a court appearance. His allies say he was tortured by elite presidential guards during his detention.

The army have described the allegations as “rubbish”.

His aides say he was later re-arrested at Uganda’s main international airport where he was planning to board a plane to Washington for further medical treatment.

“He’s in tremendous pain and suffered very serious injuries,” Mr Amsterdam had said of the star’s condition. “There’s not a part of his body that isn’t in pain.”

“His children were going to stay in Uganda. It was a brief trip, simply for a medical evaluation,” he added.

What led to the treason charges?

Before being arrested, Bobi Wine tweeted a gruesome picture of his driver, who he said had been shot dead by police thinking he was the MP.

Bobi Wine was arrested on 13 August after a campaign rally in the north-western town of Arua where the presidential convoy was allegedly stoned.

The 36-year-old musician was initially to be tried in a military court over accusations of unlawful possession of firearms but the charge was dropped. A civilian court later charged him with treason.

Bobi Wine, and the other accused, were expected to appear in court again on Thursday but the hearing has been adjourned to 1 October.

    Who is Bobi Wine?
The Afrobeats star has been a thorn in the side of Mr Museveni’s government. Since his election as an MP just over a year ago, he has backed candidates in three by-elections who have beaten those from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), including in Arua.

He was also a leading campaigner against the move to scrap the presidential age limit – set at 75 – which would have locked out the 74-year-old Mr Museveni’s bid to run for a sixth term in 2021.

Wine also joined local activists in July to protest against a social media tax introduced ostensibly to boost state revenue and to end what Mr Museveni called “gossip” on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.

  • 30 Nigerian soldiers killed in combat with Boko Haram jihadists

At least 30 Nigerian soldiers died in combat with Boko Haram jihadists who overran a military base in the northeast near the border with Niger, two military sources told AFP on Saturday.

Scores of jihadists in trucks stormed the base at Zari village in northern Borno state late Thursday and briefly seized it after a fierce battle, they said.

“They came in large numbers in trucks and carrying heavy weapons and engaged soldiers in a battle that lasted for an hour,” a military officer said.

“They overwhelmed the troops who were forced to temporarily withdraw before reinforcements arrived.

“We lost at least 30 men,” the officer said, adding that the attack took place at around 4:00 pm local time.

“They overwhelmed the troops who were forced to temporarily withdraw before reinforcements arrived,” said the officer who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak.

Boko Haram has intensified attacks on military targets in recent months.

The attacks appear to undermine repeated claims by the military that Boko Haram had been defeated.

The militants took weapons and military equipment before they were pushed out of the base by troops with aerial support, said a second military source who gave a similar death toll.

The militants were pursued and bombarded by a fighter jet, said the military sources.

“The terrorists also suffered heavy casualty from the bombardment”, one of the military officers said.

Zari is located 30km from the town of Damasak on the border with Niger.

The jihadists are thought to have attacked the base from the nearby Garunda village, where 17 troops were killed and 14 injured in an attack on another military base last month, the sources said.

In a statement late Friday the Nigerian military confirmed troops fought Boko Haram “insurgents…on rampage to loot the community and extort money from villagers”.

    Army silent on casualties
“Troops…have successfully routed Boko Haram insurgents in an encounter that ensued yesterday evening at Zari village,” the military said in the statement.

It did not speak of military casualties and the raid on the base but maintained “several Boko Haram fighters and weapons” were destroyed in the fight.

The Nigerian army has on several occasions disputed reports on losses to Boko Haram and has in some cases played them down.

On July 14 Boko Haram militants overran a military base in Jilli village, in neighbouring Yobe state when dozens of troops were said to be been killed, wounded or missing.

The army at the time conceded the base was attacked but said troops remobilised and succeeded in repelling the attackers.

In a short statement on Wednesday, IS-affiliated Boko Haram jihadists claimed to have killed “several” Nigerian troops in mortar strikes on a military base in the town of Arge in the Lake Chad area.

AFP could not independently verify the claim.

The Boko Haram insurgency which is in its ninth year has left 20 000 people dead and displaced 2.6 million.

Soldiers and civilians have also been targeted in separate attacks in neighbouring Chad and Niger.

  • Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are still doing fine, Liam confirms

This just in from Liam Hemsworth’s sporadically updated Instagram: he and his fiancée who he may never marry because they don’t need any additional symbols of commitment, Miley Cyrus, are doing fine still. Hemsworth shared a photo of his “strolls with my girls,” which is just Cyrus and their dogs. Hemsworth also shared the photo on Twitter so those followers were informed too. It is a very nice photo, after all:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BnBvy9bH3iY/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control

The couple has had a more low-key summer than most PDA-drunk celebs. They were last seen out getting lunch together at the beginning of August. A month ago, they first tactfully denied breakup rumors because of their diminished public profile and because Cyrus deleted all her Instagrams (a slightly cliché move these days; see: Taylor Swift, Pete Davidson, Zayn Malik, and Blake Lively, temporarily) to mark a new era in her career. She never unfollowed Hemsworth, and he never unfollowed her. But don’t you feel better being reassured again that these two are okay?

  • Dumsor disrupts NDC elections in Eastern Region

The Eastern Regional election of executives for the National Democratic Congress was not as smooth as was expected.

The electoral process was stalled for several hours following a collective decision by the various constituency chairmen demanding the payment of their transport fares from the election committee before allowing their members to vote.

This action by the Chairmen delayed the process until 5.30 pm before the voting process began after the intervention and sorting out of their demands by some senior national executives of the party.

In a bizarre twist, a power interruption forced the election committee and officers from the Regional Electoral Commission to conduct the process with torchlight and lights from their mobile phones after electricity supply was cut off from the Apeguso Senior High School where a total of 996 delegates were gathered and were still voting with counting expected to prolong into midnight.

  • Jose Mourinho feeling the heat at Man Utd, says Steve McMahon

Jose Mourinho is “feeling the heat” from Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp and is showing signs of “insecurity” in the way he is dealing with the media, Steve McMahon said on The Debate.

Manchester United have lost two of their opening three games of the Premier League season, including a 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham on Monday.

But Mourinho was defiant in his press conference on Friday, saying he remains “one of the greatest managers in the world”.

However, former Manchester City and Liverpool midfielder McMahon disagreed: “Presently, no. Absolutely not.

Read: Man Utd 2-1 Real Madrid Jose Mourinho unsure when Anthony Martial will return

“He was magnificent when he first came into the Premier League and he was successful, but all of a sudden it’s become about him.

“Every conversation in the last 10 days has been ‘me, me, me’ and that’s the first sign of insecurity and the pressure that he has from the new type of managers like Klopp and Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino. He can’t stand the heat.

“He is clearly not the best manager right now. Guardiola is, then it’s Klopp. Could Klopp manage Manchester United right now? 100 per cent. Could Mourinho manage Liverpool? Not in a million years.”

Monday’s loss to Tottenham was Mourinho’s worst home defeat as a manager, and he will be looking for a response at Burnley on Sunday.

Former England and West Ham defender Matthew Upson agreed with McMahon that Mourinho is finding it hard going at the moment.

“It’s driven by insecurity at the moment. Everyone has those moments where you are being doubted in a very intense way and you can only react by talking about how good you have been,” Upson said.

“At the moment they are not particularly good. His first year at Manchester United was excellent, he did a great job to stabilise the club with the group of players he had and win the Europa League.

Read: Man Utd: Jose Mourinho hoping for one more signing before window shuts

“That was a great start to his managerial career but from that point it hasn’t been good enough to put himself in the bracket of the greatest managers in the world at the moment.”

McMahon also thinks someone at Manchester United should have advised Mourinho to change his approach with the media.

“You have to give him kudos for winning the trophies he has done but I don’t think there’s any need for him to come out and give himself a pat on the back. Top managers don’t do that, they leave it to other people to gauge how successful you are or you’re not,” McMahon said.

“Someone should have reined him in. It’s Manchester United, say ‘excuse me, this is not about you, can you talk about the game or Manchester United and how you can make it better’.

“Also, he is beating the drum about how he is delighted with his players for their passion and commitment. Isn’t that a pre-requisite for any team? Let alone a team like Manchester United.”

  • Man City director, Txiki Begiristain of football on spending, players & European success

During All Or Nothing, Manchester City’s recent documentary, there was a revealing contrast between the intensity of manager Pep Guardiola on the training pitch and the coolness of the club’s boardroom, where Txiki Begiristain plotted his next move in the transfer market.

Swivelling in his white leather chair, City’s director of football gave the impression that he was several moves ahead of his opponents.

Having Abu Dhabi owners, who have spent approximately £1.4bn on players alone during their 10-year reign clearly helps, but the former Barcelona director is keen to impress that it’s money spent well.

In a rare interview, he tells BBC Sport why some people cannot be trusted to spend money wisely, why City won’t tear up the team if they don’t succeed and why they are not yet feared in Europe.

‘We want to win this race. We need to do it fast’

“You can give money to all kinds of people.

“There are people who work and they do well and they spend all the money, and for nothing. They enjoy life for three or four years.

“Then you give money to people who want to do well. Of course, they have to run and do it quick – but they spend the money and it stays there. Then you see the project, the philosophy, the way to work, a way to play. Once we get success doing it this way, we know that it is going to stay here forever.

“It is true that we have spent a lot of money – that is because we want to move fast. We want to win this race. We need to do it fast. We need to spend the money.

“The other clubs got there because they have been spending money for 50-60 years. They have been signing the best players in the world, spending a lot of money that Manchester City could not spend.”

‘You don’t need to change 11 players every year’

“I know we cannot win all the time but that is the target. Everyone coming to this club has to know that we are here to win.

“Not winning is a failure. Of course, it is going to happen. We are not here to think: ‘We won the league last year, we will win it again in three years.’

“The club stays; the people do not. People need to be successful, otherwise others will come. They are not coming here just to enjoy life – they are coming to fight to win.

“We know if we don’t win, it doesn’t mean everyone will be out. If you fight, if you play well, if people are happy, if the idea is good and the idea works, then you change a couple of pieces in the squad and you are back again.

“You don’t need to change 11 players every year. You need to change two or three.

“If you win, you need to bring someone in to create competition. If not, you have to improve some pieces, but the idea stays and the work is there to try and win again.”
