  • 2018 SHS choices of BECE candidates released

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has completed and placed all the candidates who passed their 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examinations, into the various senior high schools, technical and vocational institutes for the 2018/2019 academic year.

Results of the 509,827 candidates who sat for the exams were released by the West African Examination Council last week.

Read: 2018 BECE: 83 results cancelled, 2,061 withheld

The entire results of 2,061 candidates were withheld pending the conclusion of investigations.

Those of 83 candidates were cancelled “for bringing mobile phones into the examination hall and receiving external assistance”.

One hundred and thirty-four had their subject results cancelled for bringing foreign materials into the exams centres.

Others among the 134 had their subject results cancelled for collusion and engaging in irregular activity during the exams.

According to the Council, it is investigating the alleged malpractices after which a determination would be made on either to release or cancel those results, a statement by the Council announcing the release of the BECE results said.

Meanwhile the GES has asked the candidates who passed their exams to go to the Computer School Selection and Placement portal (www.cssps.gov.gh) to check the schools they have been placed.

Alternatively, candidates can check their placement by purchasing the CSSPS scratch card and texting the 10-digit code plus their index number to the short code 1060 on all mobile networks.

“Candidates can now print their placement forms and send them to their respective schools,” the GES said in a statement.

Mr Asiedu Nketia was reported on Rainbow radio to have sent some persons to ask Koku Anyidoho to step down.

Read: I gave Koku an option to be my deputy or contest me Nketiah

The report said he has confessed to some individuals that he [Nketiah] told Koku Anyidoho to contest because he would no longer contest the race.

But Mr Asiedu Nketia who sounded angry over the story denied sending a delegation to Koku Anyidoho. According to him, he has done no such thing and blamed some faceless individuals for orchestrating such reports.

He also revealed that Koku Anyidoho recently led a group of NDC elders to come to his official residence to apologise for claiming that he [Koku] received blessings from him [Nketiah] to contest because he was no longer interested.

I was very angry when I saw the story because I never did such a thing. I have no problem if Koku contests me. It is his right but reporting that I begged him to step down is false,” he said.

“Koku rather came to me with some NDC members to apologise for claiming that I have given him the green light to contest. I accepted the apology and asked that we move on to develop the party,” he said on Accra based Okay FM

  • Remembering Michael Jackson’s very complicated, immeasurably influential life

How does one go about distilling the memory of a man once he’s no longer here?

We eulogize, we mythologize, we grasp at ways to neatly and succinctly sum up a person’s existence; what it meant to them, what it meant to us, what it meant to the world. They become the hero or the villain. We categorize them, we need it to be neat. It’s just easier that way. But people in their truest forms are more complicated than that, their lives a jumbled confluence of contradictions, a melding of noble intentions and inherent flaws—the sinner and saint all wrapped up in one messy package.

And Michael Jackson’s life just may have been the messiest.

As we celebrate what would’ve been the King of Pop’s 60th birthday on August 29, nine years following his untimely death thanks to acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication at the hands of an enabling physician later convicted of involuntary manslaughter, one still wonders how best to consider him: the iconic, unparalleled performer or the complicated, tortured soul underneath? Can you have one without the other? And should you even want to try?

For his children, the hope is that Jackson is remembered for all he did for his fellow man during his 50 years on this rock, as son Prince Jackson, who will be with his siblings Paris and Blanket in Las Vegas with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation on their father’s birthday, told E! News at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVas in Toronto earlier this week. “They are going to be awarding him an award for his humanitarian work,” he said of the plans to celebrate Michael’s “Diamond birthday.” “And I think it’s an appropriate thing because, above all else, I think he wanted to be remembered for his contributions to humanity.”

And, frankly, that’s not a bad place to start. Widely heralded for his pioneering effort in charitable fundraising in the entertainment industry, the Guinness World Records once recognized him for supporting a total of 39 charities, more than any other performer.

Dedicated to the ideals of equality and world peace, Jackson spent much of his career donating millions of dollars to charity, penning hits like “We Are the World” explicitly to aid the poor across the globe. In 1992, he launched the Heal the World Foundation, with a stated mission of “improving the conditions for children throughout the world” by fighting world hunger, homelessness, child exploitation, and abuse. He was also one of the first artists to publicly throw their weight behind efforts to bring attention to the HIV/AIDS crisis, publicly pleading with President Bill Clinton at his inaugural gala to give more money to charities and research.

Of course, those weren’t his only contributions to humanity. One might argue that perhaps his biggest contribution to the rest of us was his artistry itself. And they might be right. Jackson was a pioneer in every sense of the world. With the release of Thriller in 1982, he became the first artist to use music videos as successful promotional tools, popularizing an art form that remains an industry standard and fan favorite to this day while almost singlehandedly making the existence of MTV possible.

And then there’s his sound, his dancing, his style, his approach to celebrity, his breaking down of racial barriers—all of it revolutionary, all of it influential to a younger generation in ways both massive and minuscule. In death, he remains the record holder for the world’s best-selling album of all time (Thriller, with an estimated 66 million copies sold). He was the first and only artist to ever have five albums sell over 30 million copies worldwide. Guinness World Records has recognized him as the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time.

Of course, there was a darkness, too. The yang to all this yin. Jackson spoke openly about the abuse he endured as a child star at the hand of father Joe Jackson, a taskmaster who pushed his family to great heights but at quite a cost. There was his ever-changing appearance, a confusing mix of plastic surgeries, posthumously diagnosed vitiligo (a disease that causes one to lose pigmentation in their skin in large blotches), and a reliance on make-up to cover up the skin disorder. There was the erratic behavior (the infamous dangling of baby Blanket off a balcony comes to mind), the eyebrow-raising romantic relationships with Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe, the Neverland of it all. And, of course, there were the disturbing allegations of child molestation that, though either settled out of court or dismissed with full acquittal, followed Jackson like a specter for the rest of his days.

And then there’s our role in all of this: A not-always-kind public’s obsession with the man they both revered and reviled with wild vacillation. We dubbed him “Wacko Jacko” in the press. We rarely stopped to consider why a painful childhood might lead a man to behave in such childlike ways that left us ill at ease, how our obsession with his greatness might lead to an acute paranoia or a drug addiction or a broken spirit. As we’ve mourned the loss of him, we’ve also eased up on this side of him, this side of us; perhaps to give him the peace he deserves or the peace of mind we think we deserve.

At the time of his death, Jackson was in the process of mounting his biggest comeback yet, a concert series eerily and rather aptly entitled This Is It. After years of negative headlines, it felt as though this was the performer’s big swing to bring the attention back to what, in his eyes, mattered most: The music, the craft, the spectacle, the art. Dying just three weeks before the first sold-out show, Jackson never got that chance.

But maybe he knew something we didn’t all along. Maybe he knew that he would live on long after he ceased to exist. “I always want to do music that inspires or influences another generation. You want what you create to live, be it a sculpture or painting or music,” Jackson told Ebony in 2007. “Like Michelangelo, he said, ‘I know the creator will go, but his work survives. That it why to escape death, I attempt to bind my soul to my work.’ And that’s how I feel. I give my all to my work. I want it to just live.” All these years later, it still does. And because of that, he does too.

    Iconoclast. Humanitarian. Father. Child.

He is all of these things and yet, on their own, he was none of them. Without one, you don’t have the other. He was man, he is myth. He was the King of Pop. And he is missed.

  • Merkel travels to West Africa for talks on migration, trade and investment

Chancellor Angela Merkel left Germany on Wednesday morning for a multi-day diplomatic mission which will take her to the West African states of Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria.

The trip follows close on the heels of an announcement by Berlin to reduce obstacles to German-African trade and underscores the growing importance which the federal government attaches to the continent in its foreign policy.

Talks between Merkel and local dignitaries in Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria are expected to focus on migration, trade and investment.

Read: Angela Merkel to visit Ghana in August

“The economic perspective is so important for most countries in Africa because there are many young people in need of training and jobs,” the chancellor said during her latest weekly podcast.

During recent years, West African countries have become a major source of irregular migration to Germany. Officials estimate that there are currently 14,000 citizens from Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal living in the federal public without a valid residence permit.

Germany is now such a popular destination for Nigerians that they accounted for seven percent of all new asylum applications filed with German authorities during the first half of 2018.

As a consequence, the country ranked third behind Syria and Iraq in a table of places of asylum seekers’ origin compiled by the government.

Merkel has come under intense political pressure to toughen her stance on asylum policy. Her own interior minister Horst Seehofer has vowed to implement a “migration master plan” which will lead to a sharp reduction in the number of asylum seekers coming to Germany.

The chancellor is hopeful that leaders in Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria will hereby cooperate with Berlin in taking back migrants who have failed to obtain residence on humanitarian grounds.

Germany is already funding so-called “migration advisory centers” in Ghana and Senegal where failed asylums seekers who return home voluntarily are offered assistance during their job hunt.

A further center is scheduled to open in Nigeria in the course of the year. Once passed, some West Africans may also benefit from new legislation which is currently being drafted by Merkel’s cabinet to attract more skilled labor from abroad.

Nevertheless, Berlin has also repeatedly clashed with local authorities in the issue area of migration.

While German authorities complain about a West African bureaucracy which they say works slowly, governments in the region have insisted that they must be completely certain that the deportees are genuine citizens of the country in question.

Aside from the sensitive topic of deportations, Merkel will also raise the G20 “Compact with Africa” initiative which it has launched to promote investment on the continent as a potential means to address the root courses of emigration.

West African leaders have previously expressed a desire to increase their volume of trade with Germany and reduce a current imbalance between high levels of imports from, and relatively small amounts of exports to, the European country.

Stefan Liebling, the president of the German-African Business Association, recently announced that German companies are planning to ramp up their investments on the African continent during the coming years.

According to his association, new investments by German companies in Africa will rise by more than 10 percent to a total of more than one billion euros.

Back in June, the federal government also eased the conditions which must be met for domestic small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access export guarantees in trade with certain African countries.

Towards this end, Berlin lowered the insurance excess shouldered by these firms or the banks they work with in international trade between Germany and African states. The new regulations apply to countries which have joined the G20 “Compact with Africa” initiative.

  • Clergy, government inching towards religious tax

Religious leaders and the Government of Ghana have agreed to set up a body that will ensure that religious institutions pay taxes on the income they generate.

On Wednesday, 29 August 2018, President Nana Akufo-Addo met with members of the clergy at the seat of government, the Jubilee House, to discuss issues of national interest and to solicit their views on government’s plans and programmes.

Read: Government to form committee to look into church tax

Rev. Victor Osei, Senior Pastor of the Family Chapel in Kumasi and Vice-President of the National Association of Charismatic Churches, addressing the press after the closed session with the president, indicated that a body is to be set up within weeks that will regulate the taxing of religious establishments.

“The religious community is much more than the Church. We tend to forget that it includes Muslims, Bahia … Eastern religions are all part of religious bodies. Normally, people just talk about the Church, but for all these bodies, some monies come out and some monies come in, so, at the end of the day, it should be all inclusive. All these things were spoken about and we know the way forward is going to be good,” Rev. Victor Osei said.

Churches, according to Rev. Osei, already pay taxes as individuals and also on businesses they run.

The task of the proposed regulatory body will be to develop measures that will rope in all other churches who may be evading the payment of statutory taxes required of them.

President Akufo-Addo, in his opening remarks before the closed door session with the clergy, said he is looking forward to meeting with the clergy on periodic basis to discuss issues of public interest.

“I am hoping that what we are doing here today is going to be a regular feature of my government, so a couple of times a year, we have the opportunity to meet and hear your considerations and you will also hear the things that are on the heart and mind of government,” the President said.

  • Photos: Aretha Franklin’s body lies in open gold coffin, hundreds pay respects

Mourners have begun pouring into a museum in Detroit to pay their respects to the body of the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.

The singer’s gold-plated open coffin was placed on display for hundreds of grieving fans at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Fans of the singer travelled from across the length and breadth of the US to see her lying in state, dressed in red from head to high-heeled shoes, legs crossed at the ankles.

Museum board member Kelly Major Green said the goal was to create a dignified and respectful environment akin to a church, the place where Franklin got her start.

“What we wanted to do is be reflective of the Queen,” Ms Green said. “It’s beautiful. She’s beautiful.”

“What we wanted to do is be reflective of the Queen,” Ms Green said. “It’s beautiful. She’s beautiful.”

Ms Green said Franklin’s attire and pose communicates both power and comfort, as she did in life.

The shoes, in particular, show “The Queen of Soul is a diva to the end,” she said.

Tammy Gibson, 49, from Chicago said she arrived about 5:30 a.m. She came alone but made fast friends with others who sang and reminisced.

Growing up, Ms Gibson said she heard Franklin’s music “playing all the time” by her parents, who, “told me to go to bed – it’s an adult party.”

Outside the museum, she said: “I know people are sad, but it’s just celebrating – people dancing and singing her music.”

Aretha has been a constant in her life.

“I saw the gold-plated casket – it dawned on me: She’s gone, but her legacy and her music will live on forever.”

Aretha Franklin’s body will be on display to the public for two days.

Paula Marie Seniors, an associate professor of Africana studies at Virginia Tech said it was a fitting tribute to the singer.

Read: Aretha Franklin will be laid to rest in Detroit following a public viewing

“I think it’s incredibly significant – she is being honoured almost like a queen at one of the most important black museums in the United States,” she said.

She said the Queen of Soul was “a singer of the universe.” She added that Franklin, who died on August 16 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76, also was “so unapologetically black – she was so proud of being a black woman.”

The museum, which had been the largest black museum in the U.S. until the National Museum of African American History and Culture opened in Washington, D.C., in 2016, also hosted similar viewings for civil rights icon Rosa Parks after her 2005 death. In further symbolic symmetry, Franklin sang at Parks’ funeral, which was held at the same Detroit church as Franklin’s, and the singer will be entombed in the same cemetery as Parks.

The women came to their activism from different places and used different techniques, but “in the long run, they were both fighting for the same cause, which is freedom,” Ms Seniors said. She added that if she could attend the viewings, she would bring her 8-year-old daughter, Shakeila, who loves singing along to Aretha Franklin’s videos.

“I want my daughter to know anything and everything about African-American culture and history,” said Ms Seniors, whose father, Clarence Henry Seniors, was roommates at Morehouse College with Aretha’s brother, Cecil. “I would want my daughter to know of the people like Aretha Franklin – to be able to listen to that voice … and hear that there is something special about it.”

  • Hassan Ayariga is shameless and uncivilised – GJA President

President of Ghana Journalists Association has descended heavily on a two-time presidential hopeful, Hassan Ayariga, for his manhandling of a journalist who had gone to his house upon his invitation to cover a story.

The GJA President described Hassan Ayariga as a ‘footnote’ in the country’s electoral history and a shameless person with no ‘iota of civility.’

Affail Monney solidarised with the victim of the assault indicating the readiness of the GJA to push for justice for him as his ordeal is considered a disregard for the profession and rule of law.

Read: Hassan Ayariga attacked in Bawku

The victim Jerry Azanduna is a Ghana News Agency reporter based in the Upper East Region, where the incident occurred.

He was allegedly brutalised almost to the point of death for reporting an alleged assault on Hassan Ayariga barely a week ago by a Batik Tie and Dye dealer who was enraged with the Former Presidential hopeful for defecting from the Peoples National Convention to form his own party.

Media reports have it that Jerry Azanduna was picked up by some men allegedly sent by Hassan Ayariga to attend a press conference to clarify the alleged assault that happened about a week ago but was instead taken to the residence of the APC Founder who ordered his beatings in the presence of security personnel.

The timely intervention of some security personnel who got wind of the incident led to his rescue from the inhumane treatment meted out to him by alleged thugs of Hassan Ayariga.

“Let me extend some few words of caution to someone who has been consigned to the comical footnote of our electoral history, someone who aspires to occupy the most consequential position in our land but who without any sense of shame, any iota of civility and without any twinge of conscience organise thugs, some ferocious beats to pounce on a journalist he has called to occupy an assignment in his own home. Jerry Azanduna had a brush with death because of Hassan Ayariga’s thuggery. Our concern is predicated on a principle that once you touch one journalist you touch all of us” the GJA President bashed.

Urging immediate action from the security agencies, without favouritism or bias, Affail Money asserted, “As we speak all of us are bleeding profusely from that attack and one of the way to staunch the blood flow is for the law to take its course. No one is above the law and certainly, Hassan Ayariga is not above the law so we expect the law to deal with him surgically”

This means all members of the Executive Committee will vacate their posts while the body to be set up by FIFA and CAF will take charge of the administration of the game in the country.

Read: FIFA to announce Normalization Committee members before Friday

The Normalisation Committee will run the affairs of the game in Ghana until their mandate expire in March next year when it is expected that elections are held.

Members of the Executive Committee seek to occupy positions within the federation must stand for elections when the statutes have been re-examined by the body appointed by FIFA.

The confirmation of the FIFA Normalisation Committee means that the work of the FIFA/CAF liaison team for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also ended.

A special FIFA Task Force will be put in place to investigate the allegations of wrongdoing against some members of the previous administration to establish the facts and prescribe punishments for those found guilty.

The decision to disband the Executive Committee is part of the agreement reached with government to stop the liquidation of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

A letter addressed to Madam Fatma Samoura, General Secretary of FIFA, by Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Dame reads; “I refer to the mutual understanding reached and signed by the President of the FIFA, Mr Gianni Infantino and the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ghana, Mr. Isaac Asiamah at the meeting on 16th August, 2018, held in Zurich, Switzerland, between representatives of Government of Ghana and FIFA.

“In demonstration of our good faith and commitment towards a realisation of decisions reached at the meeting of 16th August, 2018, the Attorney-General has filed an application for the discontinuation of the petition to wind up the GFA.

“This constitutes a notification to the High Court of Ghana of the government’s decision to discontinue/withdraw the petition for the liquidation of the GFA,” the letter read.

The letter also entreated FIFA to fasten the process of instituting a normalisation committee to replace the GFA Executive committee as they look to return football to normalcy.

“In line with the mutual understanding duly executed by FIFA and Ghana, I would greatly appreciate if the foregoing is brought to the attention of the Bureau of the council for the GFA executive Committee to be immediately replaced with the Normalisation Committee,” the letter stated.

In related development, an Accra High Court on Tuesday ordered the Registrar of Companies to stop the dissolution of the GFA and return all assets belonging to the GFA after the Attorney General filled for a withdrawal of the suit.

  • Court drama in Kenya’s top judge case

The chief magistrate of Kenya’s anti-corruption court, Lawrence Mugambi, has rejected an order by the High Court to stop the prosecution of Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.

He said the order contained a clerical error, so he has postponed the case until Friday to allow time for the High Court to clarify its position.

Justice Mwilu was arrested on Tuesday and is facing charges for abuse of office for personal gain and tax evasion and is also being accused of misconduct for accepting a personal bank loan of $120,000 (£93,000).

Her lawyers secured the court order stopping the case, arguing that the bank loan was “purely commercial transactions” and the allegations were meant to embarrass the top judge.

The arrest of Justice Mwilu is seen as part of an intensified war against corruption by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

  • Police get 100 new vehicles to fight crime

About 100 specialized vehicles with the emblem of the Ghana Police Service have landed at the Tema Port.

About 60 cars have already been parked at the Police headquarters for onward distribution to enhance police operations.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the Toyota Corolla cars were part of the bullet-proof vehicles ordered by the former President John Mahama at the tail end of his administration on January 3, 2017 for use by the new Akufo-Addo administration.

Read: Call 191 and 18555 to combat crime Ghana Police Service

However, the new administration renegotiated the deal and obtained additional 100 vehicles without paying extra money.

The Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery during the opening of the 2nd Crime Officers Conference at the Police Headquarters in July this year, announced that the police would be allocated about 100 additional vehicles.

Over 200 vehicles and motorbikes were last year allocated to the Ghana Police Service by government to resolve their logistical problems.

He said government had provided vehicles and other logistics to the Formed Police Unit to improve its operations.

    Background

The acquisition of presidential fleet sparked heated political debate during the transition in early 2017.

However, the $9.1 million deal for the procurement of 43 special vehicles with communication squadron and ambulances was renegotiated by the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, and as a result the contract sum reduced to $8.8 million.

In the end, the NPP administration took delivery of 34 vehicles instead of the original 43, and the money that was to be paid on the nine outstanding vehicles was used to purchase 100 Toyota Corolla cars for the Ghana Police Service.

Former Information Minister Mustapha Hamid, at a news conference in February, this year, said that the government was bound by the terms of the contract signed with Amalgamated Securities Limited and added that abrogating the contract may incur significant liabilities for government.

He indicated that “in doing so, government has, however, made sure to obtain maximum gain for the public and also for ensuring the security of the state.

“In place of the nine, we have acquired 100 Toyota Corolla cars for use by the Police Service in line with our commitment to retooling the Police Service to enable it play effectively, its role of protecting the Ghanaian people. We have done all this with a total amount of $8.8 million,” he underscored.

A section of the shopping centre’s open parking behind the Food Court was refit and transformed into a superb Astroturf pitch with two mini goal posts set on two ends and teams of seven players aside scuffled against one another in 10-minute-long encounters as ambient music and commentary on the action streamed across the park from a special DJ outpost.

For all the three tournaments that were held, children, parents, shoppers and tenants were signed up into different teams that subsequently played against each other on weekends in a gala which always attracted animated spectatorship from visitors and pedestrians who watched from the walkway along the Nsawam Highway.

Every shopper who made a minimum purchase of Ghc100 in any store at ARC in the course of the week, secured automatic qualification to be signed on to a team for the soccer challenge.

‘This has been a rare opportunity for me and my boys. The pitch is great, the team spirit and bonding opportunities are incredible and the atmosphere has been simply fantastic. I haven’t had this experience in ages,’ said an adult player whose two sons featured respectively in the first and second challenges.

The Marketing Manager said: “We had a total of three exciting challenges within the month involving three categories of teams and players. The first challenge comprised random visitors to the Centre and participants who signed up for their wards while the second encounter involved teenagers, most of whom were on vacation and had come to the centre to have fun.”

The final challenge which closed at the weekend, was the tenant competition, involving some ten stores from the centre and in which the food and grocery giant, Shoprite, won with ease. Other participants in the tenant challenge were Basilissa, Infinix, The Outlet, The Chop Bar, MTN, Sweet Roses, Chicken Inn and Pizza Hut.

Located at Dome, near the St John’s Grammar School on the Accra-Nsawam Highway, Achimota Retail Centre is the preferred destination for modern shopping and quality recreation in the entire Ga East Municipality of Accra. Over the past two years, the Centre has brought convenient and secured one-stop shopping to several communities in the north-eastern sector of the capital, including Dome, Tantra Hill, Ofankor, Ashongman Estates, Kwabenya and the Achimota township.
