  • FIFA’s Normalisation Committee has it all to do in Ghana

The direction of football in Ghana is about to become a lot clearer thanks to FIFA’s newly-installed ‘normalisation committee,’ following a turbulent three months which were triggered by allegations of corruption and bribery.

After 13 straight years under the leadership of Kwesi Nyantakyi, Ghana football will have new leadership in an interim capacity during the country’s most challenging sporting crisis.

The impact of the documentary “When Greed and Corruption Become The Norm” touched almost every aspect of the sport in Ghana, forcing FIFA to scrap the executive committee of the Ghana Football Association and commence plans for a normalisation committee.

FIFA has yet to spell out the composition or exact terms of the committee, but ‘reform’ has been the buzzword in Ghana since the announcement. But which issues should be addressed?

Read: FIFA to announce Normalization Committee members before Friday

    Ghana Premier League

What the new committee does with the still-suspended Ghana Premier League should be top of the agenda.

The league bagged a substantial sponsorship deal with Zylofon Cash in the final days of the Nyantakyi administration, but there are still question marks over the way the league is run, as well as the structure of the Premier League Board.

There have been suggestions that the organisation of the league be split entirely from the Ghana Football Association to reflect a growing trend worldwide to give it more leverage and independence.

    Referees…

The biggest revelation of the documentary was the dismal state of refereeing as a whole in Ghana. The Confederation of African Football has already issued long bans for many Ghanaian referees implicated in the video.

The Chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana Joe Debrah told KweséESPN that out of fourteen FIFA referees in Ghana, twelve have been indicted. David Laryea, an assistant referee, has been banned for life and six others all handed 10-year bans.

However, Debrah claims that, “If the league should start today we can get referees to officiate,” and says there is a vast pool of match officials on stand-by.

The bigger issue, though, is what calibre would those referees be, given the top echelon has been removed?

    Removal of absolute power

A major complaint under the Nyantakyi administration was how the sheer scope of power given to the GFA president made it almost impossible for checks and balances to exist.

Under the existing statutes, the president names the vice president and also names the emergency committee, which is responsible for the day to the day administration of the body.

Heart of Lions owner Randy Abbey, himself a former executive member, has suggested the practice gives undue power to the president of the football association and opens the door for abuse.

    Restore faith and reputations

In addition to laying structures and sorting out statutes, the normalisation committee simply has to restore public confidence in Ghana football. The scale of the allegations against officials and referees has left an immense reputational dent on local football.

To win back fans, sponsors, and public goodwill, there has to be a sense that things have changed for the long haul.

“If we don’t come back stronger, better organized, more determined to create a sustainable business with a great product that people can get excited and proud about, shame on all of us,” Hearts of Oak chief executive Mark Noonan told KweséESPN.

  • FIFA to announce Normalization Committee members before Friday

Deputy Attorney General Godfred Dame says FIFA will announce the members of the Normalization Committee before the end of this week.

He disclosed this to the media on Tuesday after the government officially withdrew the court action to liquidate the Ghana Football Association.

The Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo, went to court last month with a firm plan claiming that the Ghana Football Association was not fit for the purpose for which it was established.

Read: Ghana is not an island, hence, our agreement with FIFA Deputy AG

She claimed that GFA officials used the Association for some corrupt activities as captured in the 2014 World Cup Dzamefe Commission Report and a documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, an undercover investigative journalist.

But FIFA said the action was tantamount to interference and asked Government to terminate the process or risk a worldwide ban by 27 August 2018.

A Ghana government that went to Zurich to FIFA officials obliged and this has paved way for the formation of an ad hoc committee to run the football in the country.

Read: Government to halt GFA dissolution; agrees to compromise with FIFA

”Within the next two days- I’m sure about that, FIFA will constitute the Normalization Committee,” Dame said.

”It’s a decision we took in Zurich without any controversy and I’m sure it’s going to be carried out.

”In the next two days, we will have the announcement of the Normalization Committee set up by FIFA and the Ghana government and the membership will be made known to the public and then they will assume the powers of the GFA.”

  • “Frustrated’ French minister quits on air

French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot has resigned on live radio, in a dramatic announcement that caught even President Emmanuel Macron by surprise.

The former TV presenter and green activist said he had quit after a series of disappointments in attempts to address climate change and other environmental threats.

Mr Hulot said he felt “all alone” in government.

The decision was taken on the spot and, he added, even his wife did not know.

“I am going to take… the most difficult decision of my life,” the minister said in an interview on France Inter radio.

“I am taking the decision to leave the government.”

Mr Hulot said that he had not told Mr Macron or Prime Minister Edouard Philippe of his decision, because he believed they would try to talk him out of it.

Mr Hulot is a popular figure in France, and correspondents say his departure is a major blow to Mr Macron, whose ratings are currently poor.

Mr Macron responded to the news by saying he respected Mr Hulot’s decision, adding that he hoped to be able to count on his support “in another form”.

Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said he regretted Mr Hulot’s resignation.

“I don’t understand why he is stepping down when we had many successes in the first year that are to his credit,” he told BFM TV.

The resignation comes a day after the government announced it was relaxing restrictions on hunting. Mr Hulot said that this decision had made him aware of the power of lobbyists.

He also said he was frustrated by the “small steps” being taken to deal with climate change and the fact that “this subject is always relegated to the bottom of the list of priorities”.

But the minister said he wanted his resignation to be seen as a wake-up call.

“I hope that my act is not an act of resignation but one of mobilisation,” he said.

The well-known presenter of a TV adventure programme, Mr Hulot has campaigned for environmental protection for decades.

Mr Macron was the first president to successfully convince the popular environmentalist to join his government after Mr Hulot turned down previous invitations from Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande.

  • Eddie Murphy is going to be a dad for the 10th time

There’s another little one on the way for Eddie Murphy.

The 57-year-old star is going to be a dad times 10 this year as his girlfriend Paige Butcher is expecting their second child together.

“Eddie Murphy and longtime girlfriend Paige Butcher are pleased to announce that they are expecting their second child in December,” a rep for Murphy confirmed in a statement to People.

The announcement comes on the heels of recent sightings of Butcher with a visible baby bump. In 2016, the longtime couple welcomed their first child together, daughter Izzy Oona Murphy. She was also the first child for Butcher.

Murphy is no stranger to fatherhood. He is a dad to five kids with his ex-wife, Nicole Mitchell Murphy. They share four daughters—Bria, 28, Shayne, 23, Zola, 18, Bella, 16—and son Miles, 25.

The Oscar nominee also shares son Eric, 29, with Paulette McNeely and son Christian, 27, with Tamara Hood. In 2007, former Spice Girl Melanie “Mel B” Brown gave birth to their daughter, Angel, 11.

While Murphy and Butcher have been dating for years, the Coming to America star and model have managed to keep their life together mostly private save for the occasional joint red carpet appearance. That’s partly due to the fact that both of them stay off of social media.

“I’m in a relationship with a celebrity, so I felt like there’s already enough of me out there,” Butcher told Vanity Fair back in 2013. “I felt like I was giving out too much information. I was giving people too much access. I like to keep as much private as possible now.”

  • Lauryn Hill clears up all the rumors you’ve heard about her

    Lauryn Hill has spoken.

In a candid interview for 97.9 The Box in Houston, award-winning pianist Robert Glasper called out the 8-time Grammy winner with controversial claims about her behavior behind the scenes. Glasper described working with the songstress in 2008 for a 20-minute show that he was hired for as the principal piano player. Glasper noted he refused to audition in person or on the phone for Hill considering he had an album out that she could listen to. He alleged that they rehearsed roughly 10

hours a day for a week in preparation for the show and further claimed that Hill changed the show every day they rehearsed. According to Glasper, on the last day of rehearsal before the show, Hill did not come and her manager told the band that she was “not really feeling the way you guys have been learning the music” and they were going to cut their pay.

“She likes to fire bands,” Glasper alleged in the interview. “She will go on tour with a band and in the city that they’re doing a show, she’ll hold auditions for her band.”

Glasper left and said that someone came running after him to get him to come back. He said they could wire the money to his account before the show because he didn’t trust them anymore and ended up performing the show. However, in telling the story, the musician made additional claims about Hill, including that he was instructed not to look her in the eye and to call her “Ms. Hill.” He also alleged that Hill “steals music” and that her iconic album was made by other people who didn’t get their rightful credit, referencing a 1998 lawsuit filed by a group of musicians that worked on the album who similarly claimed they were not properly credited. The musicians received a settlement out of court in 2001.

Miseducation was made by great musicians and producers that I know, personally,” he said. “The one thing you did that was great, you didn’t do…She took the credit for making the classic album. Those songs were written by other people and they did not get their credit. She likes to take credit so she can become this super person.”

More than a week later, Hill fired back at Glasper in a lengthy essay she penned and published on Medium on Monday.

“The arrogance of presumption that allows someone to think that they could have all the facts about another person’s life and experience, is truly and remarkably… presumptuous,” she began. “People can sometimes confuse kindness for weakness, and silence for weakness as well. When this happens, I have to speak up.”

The star went on to address a variety of topics, including the comments made about her band selection and alleged treatment of musicians, her process and her achievements. On a logistical level, the “Everything Is Everything” star denied ever telling anyone not to look her in the eye and that the instruction may have been what someone said out of assumption. She did confirm that being called “Ms. Hill” was “absolutely a requirement.”

“I was young, Black and female. Not everyone can work for and give the appropriate respect to a person in that package and in charge. It was important, especially then, for that to be revealed early,” she wrote.

Hill also responded to Glasper’s comments about her not tuning her own guitar, stating that she “never held myself out as some accomplished guitar player,” that she never had any real instruction and that she uses it as a “writing tool.”

“Couldn’t or didn’t tune my own guitar?

That sounds like an assumption,” Hill retorted.

She also rebuffed claims that she can’t perform original versions of her songs, calling them a “myth.” Instead, she explained that she remixes her songs live because she hasn’t released an album in years and tries to keep her performances authentic.

“There’s no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I’ve been performing them without some variation and exploration,” she noted.

The star also addressed reports of her tardiness. “Me being late to shows isn’t because I don’t respect my fans or their time, but the contrary, It can be argued that I care too much, and insist on things being right,” she wrote in the essay. “I like to switch my show up regularly, change arrangements, add new songs, etc. This often leads to long sound checks, which leads to doors opening late, which leads to the show getting a late start. This element of perfectionism is about wanting the audience to experience the very best and most authentic musical experience they can from what I do.”

Hill shares a similar approach to her band. As she explained, the songstress looks for chemistry and a “particular ‘something’” that not every band has. She hires the “best” musicians and auditions them not only for talent, but also for their “vibe” and understanding of her musical direction.

He couldn’t fathom why human beings created by the image could engage in such practice when animals which do not have sense of reasoning are not doing so.

He cautioned the President against holding a referendum for Ghanaians to vote on whether to legalize homosexuality or not.

  • Pay our salary arrears by October 31 or face strike Teachers to government

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) has given government a deadline of next month October 31 to ensure that the salary arrears owed over 42,000 teachers across the country are cleared or face industrial action.

“This we will do even if only one affected person is not paid before the deadline of October 31.2018,” warned the Concerned Teachers in a communique issued on August 26 after its National Executive Meeting (NEC).

Read: TTAG denies signing MoU on licensing exams, calls for reforms

The Concerned Teachers also charged the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to exempt its members from the GES/SIC Life Group Insurance Policy as captured in an earlier letter dated August 14.

According to the Concerned Teachers, they would rather, prefer “a form should be provided for those who want to join to fill.”

On the controversial double tracking system, they said they would support fully its rollout but “will ensure teachers are not short-changed or overburdened without the necessary remuneration.”

    Below is the full communique

Government should ensure that the issue of salary arrears owed to the over 42,000 teachers is cleared latest October 31. 2018 as agreed. CCT Ghana will be left with no choice but to embark on an industrial action if this is not adhered to. This we will do even if only one affected person is not paid before the deadline of October 31.2018.

CCT GHANA is re-emphasising on her earlier stance in a letter dated 14th August 2018 to the Director-General of Ghana Education Service that, CCT Ghana members should be exempted from the GES / SIC Life Group Insurance Policy. Rather, a form should be provided for those who want to join to fill.

CCT Ghana will support fully the rollout of the Double Track Intake at the selected Senior High Schools. However, we will ensure teachers are not short-changed or overburdened without the necessary remuneration.

The National Executive Council has agreed to partner with Petra Trust to roll out a Third Tier (tier 3) Pension Scheme for members. Sensitisation will begin very soon. This scheme is however optional.

Ghana Education Service should release results of application for study leave with pay earlier before admissions are made by the universities. This will enable applicants not selected to avoid applying for admission into universities and sometimes pay admission fees due to deadlines.

CCT is not against the licensing of teachers, but we think the National Teaching Council must be cautious in the implementation of this policy.

There is no need to rush. Prospective teachers should not be disadvantaged in any way. The inputs of the Teacher Unions should be taken on board to pave way for a smooth implementation of the policy.

  • Jada Pinkett Smith gets candid about broken marriages and forgiveness

Jada Pinkett Smith is opening up about watching marriages “dissolve” around here.

The Girls Trip star took to Instagram over the weekend to share a candid family photo with Will Smith, Willow Smith and Trey Smith, taken by artist Tyler Cole. The photo shows the foursome sharing a laugh while out on a walk together.

“I’ve been watching a lot marriages dissolve around me. It’s been really painful,” Jada wrote alongside the family picture. “Marriages change. Sometimes they need to be reimagined and transformed. Sometimes they are simply over … but either way, I pray that folks going thru this painful transition find the patience and the love within to not throw the ‘babies’ out with the bath water. #family.”

Will later reposted Jada’s photo and caption on his Instagram account.

Jada has been very open about her family life on her Facebook series Red Table Talk. On the first episode, Jada sat down with Sheree Fletcher, Will’s first wife with whom he shares 25-year-old son Trey. Sheree and Will tied the knot in 1992, the same year the duo welcomed their son, Trey. Three years later, Sheree and Will divorced and Will went on to marry Jada in 1997, later welcoming kids Jaden Smith and Willow.

In a video message posted to Instagram over the weekend, Jada talked to her social media followers about forgiveness. “I’ve been sitting here just thinking about forgiveness,” Jada told her fans in the video post. “And it’s been a deep journey for me because I’ve had to look into the shadows of my own heart and understand how I’ve hurt other people, and forgive myself for any wrong acts that I might have committed or any pain that I might have caused other people.”

“I had to clear myself of my own shame, my own guilt, and have compassion for myself and forgiveness for myself, and that actually gave me the power to forgive other people,” Jada continued. “And it came through me releasing myself and having the ability and understanding of how important it is to release other people and that, you know, none of us are perfect, we’re in this together, leaning how to love. And forgiveness is not really about the other person, but it’s really about us.”

The actress captioned the video post, “Forgiveness … My power to forgive others came from forgiving myself by looking into the shadows of my own heart. But… there are acts committed against us that are so horrific our only choice is to give it to the Mother/Father to fill us with a healing needed to find the ‘God Love’ within that gives us the ‘Self Love’ we need… to forgive. It’s all a delicate process where I also had to realize that just because my heart may embrace and forgive… doesn’t mean that person should be standing beside me. Forgiveness… loving myself enough to let go #pillowtalk.”
