  • Navrongo: Residents vow election 2020 boycott over bad roads, bridges

Some communities in the Navrongo Central Constituency of the Upper East Region have given a strong word to the government, threatening they will not partake in the 2020 general election if their bad roads and bridges are not fixed in two weeks.

The communities have further warned they would resist any politician who attempts visiting their communities for purposes of political campaigns if their needs are not met.

The communities include Gingabnia, Gani, Kologo, Naaga, Biu, Doba, Anatheem and Sumbrungu.

Atea Emmanuel, a leader of the youth in Gingabnia in the Kassena Nankana West District, complained their road network, including their bridges, are not in good shape and that any time it rains, they find it difficult to cross over.

    Gingabnia

He tells our Upper East Region correspondent, Rabiu Tanko, that the situation affects maternal health since they are not able to access health care at the municipal capital during rainy days.

Mr. Atea also fears that the spillage of the Bagre Dam which is scheduled to happen soon is going to worsen their situation, hence their demand for immediate action.

Earlier in the week, Kologo and its surrounding communities were literally cut off from the Navrongo township as a result of a heavy rain which flooded most of the routes.

As at the time 3news.com visited the scene, young boys were seriously cashing in on the situation by aiding people to cross over to the other side of the flooded portions.

    Kofi Adda constructs bridges

Meanwhile, information gathered from the Office of the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda, indicates that the MP has taken an initiative of constructing bridges and culverts in some communities to save them from being cut off from the central town.

The Punyoro Bridge, which was destroyed by floods in 2016, has been reconstructed and completed by the MP. The bridge provides the easiest link to Navrongo, the municipal capital.

A resident expressed joy at the sight of reconstruction of the bridge:

“We used to pass through the river during the dry season and sometimes through the water because passing other routes is very far but now we are happy this bridge is fixed. Our women can now visit the big hospital in Navrongo,” he said in vernacular.

Another bridge, which links Nyangua to communities like Kwania, Navio in the Chiana-Paga constituency and communities in Burkina Faso, is also under construction.

A spokesperson for the MP, Achaari Wenawome Clifford, tells 3news.com, the development of the area is of utmost concern to the MP, hence his commitment to ensuring the communities are not cut off.

According to Mr. Achaari, the MP has pre-financed the bridges and culverts constructed so far up to the tune of GHȼ 58,000 from his personal coffers while awaiting his share of the  District Assembly Common Fund.

He added the projects will eventually transform the constituency into a hub of socio-economic activities, improving livelihood in the area.

  • Disconnect your ‘illegal electricity connection’ or face prosecution – Eastern Region ECG

The Eastern Regional Commercial Manager for the Electricity Company of Ghana(ECG) Mr Emmanuel Sam has cautioned members of the public who have connected power illegally to immediately disconnect it or face prosecution if they are caught.

According to him, his outfit would no longer countenance on such illegality.

He explained that ECG expects those who wants to use power to use it the right way and not illegally since it comes with huge penalties.

“It is not right to steal power. In fact it is more expensive to steal power than to use power in the manner which is allowed. Because if you steal power and you’re caught the penalty would be huge,” he warned.

Mr. Emmanuel Sam gave the warning at a press conference in Akyim Oda on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 to address some pertinent issues facing the company in the region.

It would recalled that the newly appointed Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu on Monday vowed to deal with illegal electricity connection because it had become a drain on the country’s economy.

    Avoid Middlemen

He appealed to those who want to transact business with ECG to desist from engaging middlemen for any of their services.

Mr Sam who expressed serious concern about the activities of middlemen, urged customers to deal directly with ECG instead of middlemen especially when it comes to acquisition of ECG meters.

“Using middlemen will not help you. Whatever information you need when you come to our offices we have trained staff to attend to your needs. So those who come to stand at our gates and look for middlemen to help them for any of our services should stop,” he advised.

  • Excess staff of Consolidated Bank to get alternative jobs

Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen has disclosed of an ambitious plan by the government to address issues of redundancy with the consolidation of five local banks.

He explains that the government is working to reduce the number of workers who may be laid off for one reason or another when the processes of consolidation are completed.

Read: Inusah Fuseini questions legality of Consolidated Bank

Mr. Adu Boahen made the comment at a public dialogue on the banking sector crisis organised by the Danquah Institute in partnership with Citi FM on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.

According to him, the government is considering developing alternative jobs which will absorb some of the staff of the five banks who will be eventually laid off.

“We could get some of the staff to set up a car rental company then we hive them off to run this company; lease the cars back to this back and we rent the cars. We can do same with security and catering services… before you realise, you have set up maybe five or six indigenous Ghanaian own businesses of people who are providing services to the bank and we save some jobs,” he noted.

The Bank of Ghana on August 1, 2018, revoked the licenses of five local banks.

The central bank cited issues of poor corporate governance, weak capital, severe impairments of loans, high insolvency, among others as the basis for the action.

The banks that were affected were; Unibank, the Royal Bank, Construction Bank, Sovereign Bank and the Beige bank.

Already, the management of the Consolidated bank has issued a directive indicating that the staff of all the collapsed banks currently with the new bank have till the next sixty days (ending September 2018), to undergo an assessment of their skills.

Read: Over 3,600 jobs could be hit by uniBank collapse

This means that the affected workers are currently considered on probation until the expiration of the two-month period to determine their continuous stay or exit from the Consolidated Bank.

    Weak deposit mobilization collapsed banks

Meanwhile, Mr. Adu Boahen has mounted a strong defense for the cleansing of the banking sector by the regulator.

He argues that the decision to operate a Treasury Single Account (TSA) has exposed the failure of most of the struggling banks in mobilizing deposits to sustain their operations.

“What we have done is to bring all the government deposits into one account and these are key deposits that anchored a lot of these institutions that are reeling today; but that is because they were not doing proper banking by going out to take deposits.”

He added, “As of May 2017, we had at least 10 million accounts comprising savings and cheque-in; if it is assumed that every person has two accounts that means there are about five million unique accounts.”

  • The Big Bang Theory final season to end in 2019

US series The Big Bang Theory will air its final episode in 2019, ending one of the longest-running sitcoms in US history.

The programme’s 12th and final season will premiere on 24 September and is expected to conclude in May.

Set in Pasadena, California, the series originally focused on two physicists and their aspiring actress neighbour.

The Big Bang Theory has attracted more than 18 million viewers every year since its sixth season aired in 2012.

It reportedly averaged 18.6 million viewers per episode in its 11th season, more than any other show on US television.

The production teams and CBS said in a joint statement they were “forever grateful” to the fans.

“We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close,” it read.

The series has won seven Emmys from 46 nominations, including four Outstanding Lead Actor wins for Jim Parsons, who plays the socially inept character Sheldon Cooper.

Sheldon became the major success story of the show, earning a spinoff series, Young Sheldon.

The other stars of the show are Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, and Kaley Cuoco.

In 2016, the principal cast earned about $1 million (£774,380) per episode, although there were reports they accepted a pay cut to ensure other cast members got rises.

Entertainment Weekly report that these large pay packets and the show’s many years on the air meant it was probably the most expensive show to produce on television – which may explain why it was not picked up for a 13th season.

Despite this, critical reception for the show has been lukewarm.

The social media reaction to the news was similarly mixed, with many celebrating the end of the long-running series.

  • Historian traces source of Ashanti-Akyem rivalry; lauds Otumfuo visit to Okyeman

A monarchical historian is blaming politicians from the pre-colonial era for pitching Ashantis against the Akyems.

Osei-Bonsu Sarfo Kantanka says the visit of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to Okyeman is a step to reconcile the two powerful traditional rulers.

He believes the visit will also shame politicians who have sown seeds of discord between the two rulers.

“In 1742 when the Ashanti waged the war against the Akyem by the end of the war, Asantehene Opoku Ware I had married from Akyem. Asantehene Osei Tutu II has married from Akyem.

Read: No excuses, resource universities to manage increased demand Asantehene

“We saw Asantehene Opoku Ware [II] married from Assin. So what should actually be the case if not the case of politicians coming together to actually play one against the other? So Asante and Akyem are not enemies; politicians have made them enemies,” historic Osei-Bonsu said.

He added: “Today, both have seen that they have to reconcile to put the politicians to shame.”

The comments come as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II makes a historic visit to the Eastern Region monarchy on Thursday.

Asantehene will be the special guest of honour at a durbar to mark the 75th anniversary of the late Okyehene, Sir Ofori Atta at a durbar to be hosted by Okyehene, Osagefo Amoatia Ofori Panin at Kyebi on Thursday.

Speaking exclusively to Joy News’ Ohemeng Tawiah ahead of Asantehene’s visit, Mr. Osei-Bonsu said the visit should reconcile the two people through their leadership.

“That is why it is a major occasion, a major historical event; something to be glorified. Now that Akyem Abuakwa has extended an invitation to the King of Ashanti and he is also going as a brother, we think it should end there. No politician should ever succeed in playing Akyem against Asante anywhere, anytime, any day, any longer,” he said.

According to Mr. Osei-Bonsu, pre-colonial politicians such as Captain George Maclean, Commander Hill also pitched Ashantis against the Akyem and other coastal states.

This led to the shooting to death of the killing of Opemsuo Osei Tutu II while crossing River Pra in 1717 in a war with the Akyems.

Read: Government should make chiefs key development partners Okyehene

Britain, Netherland, Denmark for instance, planned and executed a war between coastal towns on one side and Ashantis leading to the defeat of the former in 1826.

The Ashantis who were then seeking total control over trading activities at the coast saw their dominance cut in the Battle of Katamanso.

It was on the back of this war that the 1831 Treaty was drafted after Captain George Maclean had organized all coastal states, one time enemies to Ashantis into what then became known as Gold Coast to sign the treaty in 1831 with Asantehene Osei Yaw Akoto.

This was to ensure the Asante Kingdom does not stretch forth beyond the River Pra and also to keep peace with all parties involved in the agreement.

Another pact, the Bond of 1844 at Adansi Fomena supervised by then-governor Commander Hill who succeeded Captain Maclean, a merchant, was signed with between Fante chiefs. This allowed the British to usurp judicial authority from African courts, among others.

Akyem-Abuakwa, Akyem-Bosome and Akyem-Kotoku have one way or the other helped and supported opponents such as Denkyira fight the Ashanti Kingdom.

That notwithstanding, Mr Osei-Bonsu says that does not make Akyems and Asantes rivals. He insists the two tribes are brothers since they are all from one maternal grandparent.

“The people they claim are rival to Ashanti are brothers to Ashanti. Ejisu, Offinso and Abuakwa-they all hail from one maternal grandparent, Nana Dokua from Akyem Abuakwa.

“Under Nana Dokua is where we had Ejisu, Offinso and Abuakwa. They were all in Adansi Akrofrom. Then Abuakwa moved to Akorikeri and then from Akorikeri moved to Banso and from Banso moved to Abuakwa. They have always collaborated as brothers,” he explained.

  • Flood alert: Bagre Dam to spill water this week

The management of the Volta River Authority (VRA) says it has been informed by the National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL) of plans to commence the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam.

This has become necessary owing to rising level of the dam and the amount of inflows into the catchment area of the dam.

As of Tuesday, the water level at the Bagre Dam was 233.76 meters and the maximum level for spillage is 235 meters, meaning only 1.24 meters needed for the spillage.

The planned spillage which will start between August 25-30, 2018, if the current rate of rise continues, is expected to cause the White Volta to swell and most likely occupy its normal flood plains, the VRA said in a statement.

“Accordingly, all stakeholders, residents, opinion leaders, security agencies, Chiefs, and people in the above-mentioned areas, as well as the general public are to take note of this flood alert and take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected by the impending spillage from the Bagre Dam.”
