  • Ghanaians can enjoy a safer LPG regime by 2030 with Cylinder Recirculation Model Amin

Deputy Energy Minister Mohammed Amin Adam believes the roll out of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) before the year concludes will enable the Ghanaian society to by 2030 have a safer LPG regime in place to safeguard lives and property.

To that end, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has licensed five LPG marketing Companies to undertake the Cylinder Recirculation Model although the names of the companies have not been made public yet.

The marketing companies will be responsible for the purchasing and branding the cylinders as well as the distribution of already filled LPG cylinders to consumers after they have been filled at a point and transported to the marketing companies.

Mr. Amin Adam further assured: “To our LPG marketing companies, what this means is that you have no cause for alarm. Your jobs are still secured. We are only changing the manner in which LPG is distributed and consumed in the country,” adding “Cabinet directed a number of actions including the immediate commencement of the implementation of the National LPG Promotion Policy based on the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM). The policy is to ensure that at least 50% of Ghanaians have access to safe and environmentally friendly LPG for domestic, commercial and industrial use by 2030.”

A total of 510 classified high-risk LPG retail outlets representing 77.4% will have their stations converted into cylinder distribution centres under the CRM while the classified low-risk stations will be considered as autogas refilling centres with improved standards.

The CRM has gained currency following series of gas explosions which have rocked Accra and Kumasi involving human errors during discharges and leaving flammable materials in the vicinity of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) leading to sparks and fire outbreaks.

  • The best and worst of Ghanaian players abroad

Too Bad: Nicholas Opoku – Given a glorious chance to impress against big boys Juventus after losing his starting place in Udinese’s set-up, the 21-year-old’s biggest moment as a 25th-minute substitute was giving away a penalty in what ended in a 4-1 defeat for his side in the Italian Serie A on Friday. He joined The Little Zebras last summer.

Too Good: Dauda Mohammed – On his third league start for new club Vitesse Arnhem, the on-loan Anderlecht striker scored in the 47th minute to help his club snatch a 1-1 home draw against Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday. It was the 21-year-old’s second goal in five total appearances for Vitas.

Good: Kwadwo Asamoah – Largely deployed at left-back with Inter, it was refreshing to see the 30-year-old play in his original midfield position as the Nerazzurri secured a 2-0 home win over SPAL in the Italian Serie A on Sunday. It was a first full game away from the back for the former Juventus man, who joined Inter in the summer.

Asante Kotoko midfielder Kwame Bonsu has risen from the ruins and will have the privilege of wearing the national colors two years after his career appeared to be over.

Conte, as he is affectionately called, has been handed a deserved call-up into the senior national team, Black Stars for the final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya in Accra.

A remarkable story that started on 6 October 2017, when he Bonsu was sentenced to a two-year jail term by a court in Sweden for allegedly assaulting his partner in 2015. Then on the books of Swedish side Gefle IF, his contract was terminated.

  • 2nd licensure exams slated for March 25, 26

The National Teaching Council (NTC) is expected to organise the second edition of the Teacher Licensure examinations on March 25 and 26, 2019.

The Council says it is expecting about 15, 000 trained teachers to take part in the exam.

Read: 7,432 teachers fail teacher licensure exams

This will include those who could not write the maiden exam and over 7,000 teachers who failed in the first exam.

The Trainee Teachers Association of Ghana (TTAG) has blamed the council for the failure, saying it did not prepare adequately.

Read: Licensure exams: We had concerns; not opposition – GNAT

The Council has however assured that adequate preparations will be made for the second edition but insists the modalities will not change.

    Initial resistance

The licensure examination was initially resisted fiercely by some teacher unions and a section of the newly trained teachers who threatened to hit the streets in protest.

While the trainees accused the NTC of devising means to deny them employment, the teacher unions described the timetable for the conduct of the examination as “hastily put together”.

However, the NTC strongly dismissed the position of the teacher unions, saying that since 2016, it embarked on sensitisation exercises to educate all stakeholders and the Teacher Trainees Association, Ghana (TTAG) on the examination.

The NTC said it engaged with the vice-chancellors and registrars of the universities, the executives of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the Conference of District Directors of Education, among other, on the examination.

However, after a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the unions, which initially expressed their reservations about the examination, later rescinded their decision.

  • Facebook sues over ‘data-grabbing’ quizzes

Malicious quiz apps were used to harvest thousands of users’ profile data, according to Facebook.

The firm says anyone who wanted to take the quizzes was asked to install browser extensions, which then lifted data ranging from names and profile pictures to private lists of friends.

These were installed about 63,000 times between 2016 and October 2018, it says.

Facebook is suing Andrey Gorbachov and Gleb Sluchevsky, of Ukraine, who worked for a company called Web Sun Group.

    ‘Computer hacking’

The quizzes, with titles such as “What does your eye colour say about you?” and “Do people love you for your intelligence or your beauty?”, gained access to this information via the Facebook Login system – which enables connections between third party apps and Facebook profiles.

While the system is intended to verify that such connections are secure, in this case, Facebook says, users were falsely told the app would retrieve only a limited amount of public data from their profiles.

“In total, defendants compromised approximately 63,000 browsers used by Facebook users and caused over $75,000 [£58,000] in damages to Facebook,” the company said in court documents first published by online news site The Daily Beast.

The documents accuse the two men of breaking US laws against computer hacking as well as breaching Facebook’s own terms of use.

    Verification procedures

The BBC has contacted Web Sun Group for comment.

Andrew Dwyer, a cyber-security expert at the University of Oxford, said the court document suggested users who installed the browser extensions had “effectively opened up entry into their Facebook accounts”.

Facebook’s existing verification procedures would have struggled to recognise this kind of malicious activity before allowing the apps access to users’ profiles, he said.

“Fundamentally, this shows the failures of the app ecosystem – where there was little verification of what apps were doing,” he told BBC News.

“As the [alleged] malicious activity was outside of the app, the typical review process of verifying the app may not have caught this activity.”

  • Sacked Ex-UT, Capital bank workers to meet GCB bank

Some ex-UT and Capital bank workers who were absorbed into GCB Bank are expected to meet with the management of GCB after they were laid off for not possessing the minimum qualification required to work with the bank.

GCB bank last month terminated the contracts of some absorbed workers of the two defunct banks after an audit of employees of the banks exposed issues with the minimum qualification of about 160 staff.

The affected staff have since been issued with “termination of appointment” letters signed by the Head of Human Resources, Kojo Essel Junior.

The staff after the termination of their contracts threatened to petition the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and President Akufo Addo to be reinstated.

But speaking to Citi FM, on Monday March 11, spokesperson for the workers Raymond Adai Dankwa said: “first of all to have a mediation with GCB, So after the mediation with management we will know our next line of action because it could be that at the meeting issues will be thrashed out, so for us we just want to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait for them to communicate to us as to when the meeting will come on, once that is done we will know the next line of action, there is nothing like termination of contract without a reason when you go to the labour law you cannot terminate the appointment of an employee who has been confirmed without a reason.”

  • Fox News host Tucker Carlson in lewd recordings controversy

Audio recordings reveal a top Fox News host using misogynistic and offensive language on a controversial radio show.

Tucker Carlson, who speaks on the programme every week, is heard in the recordings from between 2006 and 2011 defending child marriage and making sexual comments about underage girls.

He describes women as “extremely primitive” and “basic”.

The Fox News anchor has invited “anyone who disagrees” with his views to come on his show.

Mr Carlson was hired by Fox News in 2009 and has presented an eponymously named daily evening talk show since 2016.

The unearthed recordings reveal Mr Carlson calling into a controversial show known as Bubba the Love Sponge. They were published online by the media organisation Matters for America.

What was discussed on the show?

In the recordings Mr Carlson talks to the host, Todd Clem (known as Bubba the Love Sponge), as well as his anonymous co-host, about a range of current affairs.

On several conversations, the three men discuss abuse and sexual scenarios involving children.

On two occasions, Mr Carlson lambasts charges against Warren Jeffs, who is in jail for child rape: “Now this guy may be a child rapist,” he says, “I’m just telling you that arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old and a 27-year-old is not the same as pulling a stranger off the street and raping her.”

When the show host describes 14-year-old girls at Mr Carlson’s daughter’s school sexually experimenting with each other, he says: “If it weren’t my daughter I would love that scenario.”

He also says that Bill Clinton should divorce his wife Hillary and “take up plural marriage or something with a bunch of teenagers in a foreign country”.

The three men use extremely offensive and misogynistic language against well-known female figures.

Mr Carlson refers to celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as “the biggest white whores in America”, he calls the journalist Arianna Huffington a “pig” and says that Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton are “anti-man”.

He says that “what gets women going is arguing with them”.

“You just need to be quiet and kind of do what you’re told,” he added.

When describing Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan, Mr Carlson says: “I feel sorry for her in that way. I feel sorry for unattractive women.”

    How has Tucker Carlson reacted?

Mr Carlson posted on Twitter acknowledging that he had been caught “saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago”.

He did not “express the usual ritual contrition” but publicised his show and asked his opponents to come on as guests.

In December, Fox News lost more than a dozen advertisers due to derogatory comments Mr Carlson made about immigrants.

On Sunday, Fox News rebuked remarks made by host Jeanine Pirro suggesting that Republican Ilhan Omar supported Sharia Law because she wore a hijab.

“We strongly condemn Jeanine Pirro’s comments about Rep Ilhan Omar,” the network said in a statement.

  • WAEC to biometrically verify 2019 WASSCE candidates

All candidates of this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be biometrically verified to tackle the growing trend of impersonation during examinations.

Head of Ghana National Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), Mrs Wendy Addy-Lamptey, who disclosed this, stressed that the canker is eating deep into some schools, and WAEC was now recording impersonation cases in school examinations, something that was unthinkable a few years ago, hence a stop must be put to it.

For the private examination, she said the activities of ‘soft’ or ‘miracle’ centres are becoming a source of concern to WAEC.

“We are, however, determined to intensify the fight against all forms of examination malpractices by providing further training for supervisors and invigilators.

“We will also continue to expand the scope of our sensitisation to reach many more candidates with rules and regulations of the examination and to assure them that they can pass the examination without cheating,” she said.

She said the council’s quest to deploy appropriate technology tools to check the menace will continue without let.

This year’s WASSCE will commence on Monday, April 8 and end on Friday, June 7, 2019.

  • I have forgiven Shatta Wale – Andy Dosty

Host of Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Andy Dosty, has revealed that he has forgiven Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale with whom he had been feuding recently.

The two, who had a great friendship over the years, with Shatta Wale gifting the presenter $1000 last year, had a falling out earlier this year.

Andy, on one of the segments of his morning show, had asked people to comment on a tweet by Shatta Wale which indicated that Ghanaian youth are not making money because they were lazy.

However, that did not go over well with the Chop Kiss artiste who insulted his one-time best presenter on Twitter.

A hurt Andy Dosty also recounted all that he had done for Shatta Wale and how the man was now repaying him with insults.

“I was that gentleman who came to Accra, took his CDs, went to Kumasi to share among radio stations and presenters; it was me. I drove around in Kumasi; my car, my fuel, showing him that love. Telling people there is a new kid on the block. I created a monster,” he stated.

However, it looks like Andy has decided to forget about everything and move on. At the MTN Music Festival on Tuesday, March 5, Andy, who was the official DJ on the night made a statement before dropping one of Shatta’s hit songs, My Level.

He said, “I know there have been some issues between me and a certain gentleman, well I want you to do me this favour, please tell that gentleman that I have forgiven him.”

Touching on the issue in a previous interview on 3FM, Andy explained that he bore no malice whatsoever against the musician and had thought his post was one of the usual jokes he shared with the musician because they had a good relationship until he saw a video posted by Shatta Wale of an SM fan insulting him (Andy Dosty).

“There was a video of someone insulting me left, right and centre that he (Shatta Wale) has posted. That was when I saw the intensity of the matter,” Andy Dosty told MC Bobby.

Bishop Daniel Obinim, the founder and leader of the International God’s Way Church, surely knows how to excite his followers with his antics.

As someone who owns a lot of luxury cars and even gifts some at will, one would ordinarily not expect him to hit the town without one of these cars.

But it seems Obinim likes to be cheered so much that he now rides around town with other means of transport. The ‘controversial man of God’ has been spotted in town riding a motorbike.

In a photo sighted by YEN.com.gh, a well-dressed Obinim was seen sitting on a motorbike as he looked to ride out.

Wearing a bold smile, Obinim looked quite confident on the bike suggesting that he could have been riding bikes for some time now.

  • NDC will not disband hawks today, tomorrow or ever! Yammin replies Akufo-Addo, NPP

Mr. Joseph Yammin has for the first time broken his silence on the actual role he plays in National Democratic Congress (NDC) vigilante group, the Hawks, revealing that the group officially exists in the NDC structure and will not be disbanded “today or tomorrow”.

This comes after President Akufo-Addo called on the leadership of the two major parties (NPP, NDC) to dialogue on disbanding their various vigilante groups. According to him, there is no plan to disband the NDC Hawks as they are officially recognized in the party.

Read: NDC MPs want president Akufo-Addo to resign

“The Hawks is recognized taskforce in the NDC party. They perform the roles like members of the party and providing security for the party”, he touted.

There were reports the NDC Hawks vigilante group was formed and financed by the former Deputy Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Yammin, in concert with others. While he has not shied away from his association with the group, he will not respond directly to the claims.

He disclosed that even though the group has its leadership, he is a leading member and is not ashamed to admit it publicly insisting he sees nothing wrong with the group and the role it plays in the party.

Read: Ayawaso Violence: National Security Director blames NDC’s Hawks

“I told you the other day I am not a leader of the Hawks, I am just a member and a proud one at that. The President is the Commander-In-Chief of Delta Forces, Invisible Forces, Kandahar and the rest, how can he ask us to disband our group? We are not going to disbanding the Hawks today or tomorrow”, he disclosed.

Mr Yammin, however, insists that members of the HAWKS are card-bearing members of the party who are duly recognized to perform functions of the party by providing security during elections to augment what is being given by the police which is woefully inadequate.

To buttress his point, he disclosed that even the leader of the group is a member of the security committee of the party and has been taking part in their meetings contrary to another school of thought they are not known to the umbrella family.

Speaking on Kumasi-based Pure Fm during a studio discussion, he enumerated a number of meetings they have been involved in with the current Regional Chairman wondering people will want to write them off as not members of the party.

“The Hawks is recognized taskforce in the NDC party. They perform the roles like members of the party and providing security for the party”, he insisted.

  • Mansa Musa: The richest man who ever lived

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the richest man in the world, according to the 2019 Forbes billionaires’ list released this week. With an estimated fortune of $131bn (£99bn) he is the wealthiest man in modern history.

But he is by no means the richest man of all time.

That title belongs to Mansa Musa, the 14th Century West African ruler who was so rich his generous handouts wrecked an entire country’s economy.

“Contemporary accounts of Musa’s wealth are so breathless that it’s almost impossible to get a sense of just how wealthy and powerful he truly was,” Rudolph Butch Ware, associate professor of history at the University of California, told the BBC.

Mansa Musa was “richer than anyone could describe”, Jacob Davidson wrote about the African king for Money.com in 2015.

In 2012, US website Celebrity Net Worth estimated his wealth at $400bn, but economic historians agree that his wealth is impossible to pin down to a number.

The 10 richest men of all time

*Mansa Musa (1280-1337, king of the Mali empire) wealth incomprehensible

    *Augustus Caesar (63 BC-14 AD, Roman emperor) $4.6tn (£3.5tn)

*Zhao Xu (1048-1085, emperor Shenzong of Song in China) wealth incalculable

*Akbar I (1542-1605, emperor of India’s Mughal dynasty) wealth incalculable

    *Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919, Scottish-American industrialist) $372bn

*John D Rockefeller (1839-1937) American business magnate) $341bn

*Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov (1868-1918, Tsar of Russia) $300bn

*Mir Osman Ali Khan ( 1886-1967, Indian royal) $230bn

    *William The Conqueror (1028-1087) $229.5bn

*Muammar Gaddafi (1942-2011, long-time ruler of Libya) $200bn

    The golden king

Mansa Musa was born in 1280 into a family of rulers. His brother, Mansa Abu-Bakr, ruled the empire until 1312, when he abdicated to go on an expedition.

According to 14th Century Syrian historian Shibab al-Umari, Abu-Bakr was obsessed with the Atlantic Ocean and what lay beyond it. He reportedly embarked on an expedition with a fleet of 2,000 ships and thousands of men, women and slaves. They sailed off, never to return.

Some, like the late American historian Ivan Van Sertima, entertain the idea that they reached South America. But there is no evidence of this.

In any case, Mansa Musa inherited the kingdom he left behind.

Under his rule, the kingdom of Mali grew significantly. He annexed 24 cities, including Timbuktu.

The kingdom stretched for about 2,000 miles, from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to modern-day Niger, taking in parts of what are now Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

With such a large land mass came great resources such as gold and salt.

During the reign of Mansa Musa, the empire of Mali accounted for almost half of the Old World’s gold, according to the British Museum.

And all of it belonged to the king.

“As the ruler, Mansa Musa had almost unlimited access to the most highly valued source of wealth in the medieval world,” Kathleen Bickford Berzock, who specializes in African art at the Block Museum of Art at the Northwestern University, told the BBC.

“Major trading centres that traded in gold and other goods were also in his territory, and he garnered wealth from this trade,” she added.

    The journey to Mecca

Though the empire of Mali was home to so much gold, the kingdom itself was not well known.

This changed when Mansa Musa, a devout Muslim, decided to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca, passing through the Sahara Desert and Egypt.

The king reportedly left Mali with a caravan of 60,000 men.

He took his entire royal court and officials, soldiers, griots (entertainers), merchants, camel drivers and 12,000 slaves, as well as a long train of goats and sheep for food.

It was a city moving through the desert.

A city whose inhabitants, all the way down to the slaves, were clad in gold brocade and finest Persian silk. A hundred camels were in tow, each camel carrying hundreds of pounds of pure gold.

It was a sight to behold.

And the sight got even more opulent once the caravan reached Cairo, where they could really show off their wealth.

    The Cairo gold crash

Mansa Musa left such a memorable impression on Cairo that al-Umari, who visited the city 12 years after the Malian king, recounted how highly the people of Cairo were speaking of him.

So lavishly did he hand out gold in Cairo that his three-month stay caused the price of gold to plummet in the region for 10 years, wrecking the economy.

US-based technology company SmartAsset.com estimates that due to the depreciation of gold, Mansa Musa’s pilgrimage led to about $1.5bn (£1.1bn) of economic losses across the Middle East.

On his way back home, Mansa Musa passed through Egypt again, and according to some, tried to help the country’s economy by removing some of the gold from circulation by borrowing it back at extortionate interest rates from Egyptian lenders. Others say he spent so much that he ran out of gold.

Lucy Duran of the School of African and Oriental Studies in London notes that Malian griots, who are singing historian storytellers, in particular, were upset with him.

“He gave out so much Malian gold along the way that jelis [griots] don’t like to praise him in their songs because they think he wasted local resources outside the empire,” she said.

    Education at heart

There is no doubt that Mansa Musa spent, or wasted, a lot of gold during his pilgrimage. But it was this excessive generosity that also caught the eyes of the world.

Mansa Musa had put Mali and himself on the map, quite literally. In a Catalan Atlas map from 1375, a drawing of an African king sits on a golden throne atop Timbuktu, holding a piece of gold in his hand.

Timbuktu became an African El Dorado and people came from near and far to have a glimpse.

In the 19th Century, it still had a mythical status as a lost city of gold at the edge of the world, a beacon for both European fortune hunters and explorers, and this was largely down to the exploits of Mansa Musa 500 years earlier.

Mansa Musa returned from Mecca with several Islamic scholars, including direct descendants of the prophet Muhammad and an Andalusian poet and architect by the name of Abu Es Haq es Saheli, who is widely credited with designing the famous Djinguereber mosque.

The king reportedly paid the poet 200 kg (440lb) in gold, which in today’s money would be $8.2m (£6.3m).

In addition to encouraging the arts and architecture, he also funded literature and built schools, libraries and mosques. Timbuktu soon became a centre of education and people travelled from around the world to study at what would become the Sankore University.

The rich king is often credited with starting the tradition of education in West Africa, although the story of his empire largely remains little known outside West Africa.

“History is written by victors,” according to Britain’s World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

After Mansa Musa died in 1337, aged 57, the empire was inherited by his sons who could not hold the empire together. The smaller states broke off and the empire crumbled.

The later arrival of Europeans in the region was the final nail in the empire’s coffin.

“The history of the medieval period is still largely seen only as a Western history,” says Lisa Corrin Graziose, director of the Block Museum of Art, explaining why the story of Mansa Musa is not widely known.

“Had Europeans arrived in significant numbers in Musa’s time, with Mali at the height of its military and economic power instead of a couple hundred years later, things almost certainly would have been different,” says Mr Ware.

The BBC reports that the crash happened at 08:44 local time, six minutes after the months-old Boeing 737 Max-8 took off.

Another plane of the same model was involved in a crash less than five months ago, when a Lion Air flight crashed into the sea near Indonesia with nearly 190 people on board.

Do we know how it happened?

The cause of the disaster is not yet clear. However, the pilot had reported difficulties and had asked to return to Addis Ababa, the airline said.

“At this stage, we cannot rule out anything,” Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told reporters at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa.

“We cannot also attribute the cause to anything because we will have to comply with the international regulation to wait for the investigation.”

Visibility was said to be good but air traffic monitor Flightradar24 reported that the plane’s “vertical speed was unstable after take-off”.

An eyewitness at the scene told the BBC there was an intense fire as the aircraft hit the ground.

“The blast and the fire were so strong that we couldn’t get near it,” he said. “Everything is burnt down.”

First word of the crash came when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his “deepest condolences” on Twitter.

Recovery operations were under way near the crash site around the town of Bishoftu, which is 60km (37 miles) south-east of the capital.

The plane was delivered to Ethiopian Airlines on 15 November last year. It underwent a “rigorous first check maintenance” on 4 February, the airline tweeted.

    Who are the victims?

Mr Gebremariam told the news conference that passengers from more than 30 countries were on board the flight.

He said they included 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Italians, eight Chinese, eight Americans, seven Britons, seven French citizens, six Egyptians, five Dutch citizens, four Indians and four people from Slovakia.

Slovak MP Anton Hrnko later confirmed via Facebook that his wife and two children were on the plane.

Three Austrians, three Swedes, three Russians, two Moroccans, two Spaniards, two Poles and two Israelis were also on the flight.

There was also one passenger each from Belgium, Indonesia, Somalia, Norway, Serbia, Togo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda and Yemen.

Four people held United Nations passports, the airline said, and it believed some passengers could have been heading to a session of the UN Environment Assembly which begins in Nairobi on Monday.

A UN source also told Agence France-Presse that “at least a dozen of the victims were affiliated with the UN”, and that this may include freelance translators.

The pilot was named as Senior Captain Yared Getachew who had a “commendable performance” with more than 8,000 hours in the air, the airline said.

The plane’s First Officer Ahmed Nur Mohammod Nur had 200 flight hours, it added.

    What reaction has there been?

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said he was “deeply saddened” to hear of the crash, adding: “We join the international community in mourning the loss of so many lives.”

UK PM Theresa May tweeted her condolences.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the people of Ethiopia and Kenya, tweeting: “We share their sorrow.”

African Union Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed “utter shock and immense sadness” while Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said he was “saddened”.

Mahboub Maalim, executive secretary of the East African bloc Igad, said the region was in mourning.

“I cannot seem to find words comforting enough to the families and friends of those who might have lost their lives in this tragedy,” he said in a statement.

What do we know about the plane?

The 737 Max-8 aircraft is relatively new to the skies, having only been in commercial use since 2017.

Boeing said it was “deeply saddened” by the crash and offered to send a team to provide technical assistance.

Boeing said it was “deeply saddened” by the crash and offered to send a team to provide technical assistance. Following the Lion Air crash last October, investigators said the pilots had appeared to struggle with an automated system designed to keep the plane from stalling – a new feature of the Boeing 737 Max.

The anti-stalling system repeatedly forced the plane’s nose down, despite efforts by pilots to correct this, findings suggest.

There is no suggestion that the Ethiopian Airlines jet suffered similar issues on Sunday.

What about the airline’s safety record?

Ethiopian Airlines flies to many destinations in Africa, making it a popular carrier in a continent where many airlines fly only from their home country to destinations outside Africa.

It has a good reputation for safety, although in 2010 one of the company’s aeroplanes crashed in the Mediterranean Sea shortly after leaving Beirut.

The incident killed 90 people on board.

The airline’s highest fatalities prior to this came in a November 1996 crash during a hijacking on a flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi.

One of the plane’s engines stopped when the fuel ran out and although pilots attempted an emergency water landing, they hit a coral reef in the Indian Ocean and 123 of the 175 people on board were killed.

  • Some Russians fight back as Putin cracks down on freedoms

Russian President Vladimir Putin is no slouch when it comes to geopolitics: This week, he signed a decree suspending implementation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and boasted that his security agencies had thwarted nearly 600 foreign intelligence operators last year.

But with domestic issues now driving the agenda for the Kremlin, Putin’s Russia also appears to be taking a more authoritarian turn.

This week, Russian lawmakers advanced a package of new legislation aimed at curtailing internet freedom. Among the laws awaiting the president’s eventual signature is a measure that would allow authorities to jail individuals for insulting government officials online.

Russia is not China, and the country still has a relatively boisterous online culture. But the proposed laws would widen the definition of restricted speech, calling for penalties of up to 15 days in administrative detention for those found guilty of posting information that shows “disrespect for society, the state, (and) state symbols of the Russian Federation,” – including, presumably, Putin himself.

Read: Italy halts bids for Turin-Lyon train tunnel

This latest move to curtail internet freedom in Russia builds on fairly sweeping laws that are already on the books. In 2016, a raft of anti-terrorism legislation known collectively as the Yarovaya Law introduced harsh penalties for endorsing extremism online.

According to Human Rights Watch and other advocacy groups, dozens of Russians have been jailed for simply expressing their views on blogs and social media. And Putin this week signed into law a bill that restricts the digital footprint of military service personnel.

Russian authorities may have wide latitude to restrict speech online, but it’s also worth remembering that the Yarovaya Law had a major impact on religious freedom in Russia.

A 2018 State Department report noted that Russian authorities”prosecuted individuals of many denominations for unauthorized missionary activity under the amendments to antiterrorism laws passed in 2016, known as the Yarovaya Package. Police conducted raids on the private homes and places of worship of religious minorities.

Religious minorities said local authorities used the country’s anti-extremism laws to add to the list of banned religious texts. Local officials continued to prevent minority religious organizations from obtaining land and denied them construction permits for houses of worship.”

Those practices continue, and Jehovah’s Witnesses have been some of the hardest hit by the enforcement of such laws. In one of the most high-profile cases, a Russian court last month sentenced Danish Jehovah’s Witness Dennis Christensen to six years in a penal colony on charges of “religious extremism.”

After the conviction of Christensen, allegations also surfaced of torture and ill treatment of Jehovah’s Witnesses following the searches of their homes by law enforcement officials in the Siberian city of Surgut.

And earlier this week, the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US State Department confirmed the detention of two US citizens — members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — in the southern city of Novorossiysk. Putin’s Russia may be authoritarian, but it is not monolithic: The persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses continued even after Putin in December described the inclusion of Jehovah’s Witnesses on a list of extremist organizations as “complete nonsense.”

But the move to curtail internet freedom and the crackdown on religious minorities reflect broader official paranoia about internal threats. Russia’s top leadership has a conspiratorial view of the world, with Russia opposed by foreign adversaries from without and of fifth columnists from within.

In a speech last weekend, Russia’s top military officer, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, pointed to the “aggressive vector” of the foreign policy of the US and its allies, suggesting they were employing technology of “color revolutions” and “soft power” to promote regime change around the globe, including in Russia.

“Their goal is the elimination of the statehood of unwanted countries, the undermining of sovereignty, the change of lawfully elected bodies of state power,” Gerasimov said. “So it was in Iraq, in Libya and in Ukraine. Currently, similar actions are observed in Venezuela.”

Such talk reflects wider worry about internal dissent, particularly in a country where the political opposition has no access to state airwaves and Putin has a monopoly on power.

But there are signs that some Russians resist the country’s continued slide toward authoritarianism. Earlier this week, two activists were detained briefly after interrupting a ceremony to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the death of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin on Red Square.

One protester, Yevgeny Suchkov, threw broken carnations at a bust of Stalin, shouting, “Burn in hell, executioner of the people, murderer of women and children!”

Video of Suchkov and another protester, Olga Savchenko, went viral. The two were detained but quickly released after being issued a fine of under $8, according to US-funded news outlet Current Time.

And some Russians are not ready to passively accept internet censorship. According to the news agency Interfax, authorities in Moscow have granted an application from activists for a rally against Internet censorship this Sunday. Russia’s embattled civil society, it seems, is not quite ready to give up.

  • IS brides: Two more mothers ‘stripped of UK citizenship’

Two more women from the UK who are being held in Syrian camps with their young children have been stripped of their citizenship, a report says.

It comes after the death in a Syrian camp of the baby son of Shamima Begum, who left London to join Islamic State and had her UK citizenship revoked.

The Sunday Times quotes legal sources who name the women as Reema Iqbal and her sister, Zara, from east London.

The Home Office said it did not comment on individual cases.

Decisions to withdraw citizenship from individuals were evidence-based and not taken lightly, it added.

Read: IS bride ‘should live in Holland’ – husband

The newspaper says that Reema, 30, and Zara, 28, are living in separate refugee camps in Syria along with thousands of other families who have fled from territory formerly controlled by jihadis.

Between them they have five boys under the age of eight, it says.

The parents of the sisters are originally from Pakistan, but it is not known if they have dual nationality.

    ‘Callous and inhumane’

According to the Sunday Times, the sisters left for Syria in 2013 after marrying IS fighters with “close links” to the filmed murders of western hostages.

Zara was heavily pregnant with her second child when she travelled to Syria and later gave birth to a third.

Reema has one son born in the UK and another born in Syria.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has faced criticism for his handling of the similar case of Ms Begum.

Her three-week-old son, Jarrah, died of pneumonia on Thursday, according to a medical certificate.

As he was born before she was deprived of UK citizenship by the Home Office, the baby would still be considered British.

Dal Babu, a former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent and friend of Ms Begum’s family, told the BBC: “We’ve failed, as a country, to safeguard the child.”

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said the child had died as a result of the “callous and inhumane” decision to strip Ms Begum of her citizenship while Tory MP and former justice minister Phillip Lee urged the government to “reflect” on its “moral responsibility” for the tragedy.

A UK government spokesman said: “The death of any child is tragic and deeply distressing for the family.”

Prior to the child’s death, Ms Begum’s sister, Renu, wrote to Mr Javid on behalf of the family challenging the decision to revoke her citizenship.

  • Italy halts bids for Turin-Lyon train tunnel

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has put tenders on hold for a high-speed railway to France following political clashes over the project.

The multibillion-euro TAV (Treno Alta Velocità) link has been criticised by Mr Conte’s Five Star Movement but is backed by its coalition partner, the League.

The impasse has raised talk of a government shutdown in Italy.

It comes amid diplomatic tensions with France over immigration.

    What is the project?

The TAV is a joint venture between Italy and France aiming to link Turin and Lyon via a 58km (36-mile) tunnel through the Alps.

Read: [Update] Ethiopian Airlines crash: No survivors on Boeing 737

It is expected to halve the travel time between the two cities to just two hours. The tunnel would also make it possible to travel from Paris to Milan in around four hours, down from nearly seven.

The project was launched 20 years ago and part of it has already been dug. It is scheduled for completion in 2025.

Costs were initially projected to hit €8.6bn ($9.7bn; £7.4bn), but Italy’s Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli – a Five Star member – has put the price tag at over €20 billion.

The EU first pledged to fund up to 40% of the cost, Italy up to 35% and France up to 25%.

But on Friday, France’s Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne said the European Commission offered to increase its share to 50%, leaving France and Italy to cover 25% each.

    Why has there been opposition?

The rail line has been a continual source of contention within Italian politics.

Supporters argue that it would take millions of cars and lorries off the road and drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions in the region.

But opponents say costs will be too high and the money would be better spent on upgrading existing roads and bridges.

An Italian government report last month concluded that the tunnel would be “very negatively profitable” and lose €7bn by 2059. But the methodology of its findings has been criticised.

Tensions escalated on Thursday after Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini – a member of the League – told television station Rete4 that he would continue to serve in the government coalition “unless there are too many ‘noes’” over the tunnel and other infrastructure projects.

Five Star leader and fellow Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio later hit back at Mr Salvini and accused him of acting irresponsibly by pushing for the tunnel.

On Saturday, Mr Di Maio attempted to quell concerns about a government shutdown, saying in a Facebook post that the dispute was “being resolved positively. So now let’s talk about something else and move on.”

Mr Salvini also said in an interview with news channel Sky TG24 that “Italy needs a government … there won’t be a crisis.”

Read: Stormy Daniels: Porn star’s Trump hush money case thrown out

    What happens now?

Telt, the Franco-Italian company running the project, says it plans to go ahead with tunnel construction on the French side to avoid losing millions in EU funding. But it said it but wouldn’t do so without the consent of both countries.

The firm also said it would be adding a clause in the tenders protecting it from financial penalties if plans for the tunnel are revoked.

Italy is now expected to hold further talks over the project with France and the EU.

An EU official told news agency Reuters the project could lose up to €300m of EU funding if tenders are not launched by the end of March.

  • Residents of Klottey Korley want indigene as MCE

Residents in the Klottey Korley Municipality have reiterated their call on the President to appoint an indigene of the area as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

According to them, information reaching them indicated that a non-indigene was being appointed as the MCE, hence their call on the President to reconsider the decision.

Read: Government to inaugurate Korle-Klottey, five other new districts on Tuesday

“Nobody can develop a community or a society better than the people from the community,” the spokesperson for the group, Mr Dan Taylor, said at a press conference in Osu on Tuesday.

The group said it recognised and respected the constitutional prerogative of the President to appoint local representatives within the confines of the existing local government framework, “However, we are calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to satisfy some selfish and parochial interests in the appointment, but rather look out for the general interest of the people and the residents of the municipality,” Mr Taylor added.

Read: Zanetor pioneers project to improve carbon footprints in Klottey Korle

“The MCE for La is an indigene, the MCE of Teshie is an indigene, the MCE of Nungua is an indigene, the MCE for Kpone is an indigene and the MCE for Ada is also an indigene. Why do we always have a cabal against the interest of the indigenes of Osu and Klottey Korle in general. Are we saying that the Klottey Korle people have no capable leader to lead the municipality?” the group questioned.

    Fight back

They said the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashitey, on an Accra FM radio on April 3, 2017 backed the call of the appointment of an indigene as Tema MCE.

Read: Government to create 5 new assemblies; Korle-Klottey and Ayawaso out of AMA

According to them, the minister indicated that an MCE must understand the culture of the people he or she was going to serve, he said the minister stated emphatically that he was going to advise the president to consider the plea of the Tema people.

They indicated that the regional minister had taken a contradictory move to support a non-indigene to become the MCE for Klottey Korle Municipal Assembly for his personal interest.

“We are not ready to cooperate with a non-native MCE. If after all the plea a non-native is imposed on us, we will not accord him or her the usual courtesy. We shall fight back to express our discontent,” he stated.

“It is regrettable that our forefathers gave our lands for the capital city Accra including the recent acquisition of the large stretch coastal enclave for the Marine Drive Project. It is now clear that the people of Osu, Adabraka and Asylum Down were selling their identity and treasures when their forefathers gave their ancestral home for development,” he added.

    Disrespect

They further revealed that even the NPP constituency executives, the Council of elders and patron had been marginalised and disrespected in the selection process which was against the rules pertaining to the process of the appointment of an MCE.

According to the group, the general membership of the NPP members in the municipality were not happy with the decision and the regional minister, the chief executive officer of the AMA and the Accra NPP chairman were to be blamed.

“We believe that the position of the MCE has much to do with the locals and the culture of the people than a Member of Parliament who is not an indigene, but we will reject a non-indigene as MCE,” he stressed.

  • Hudson-Odoi can be far better than Pedro and Willian – Glenn Hoddle

Former England coach Glenn Hoddle is convinced by the potential of Callum Hudson-Odoi, claiming he can be far better than Willian and Pedro.

Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to score in the 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev in the quarterfinals first leg of the Europa League on Thursday.

Several pundits exalted the 18-year old for his cameo display in the game, and Hoddle has joined them in singing his praises but says he has proven nothing yet.

“I think he’s an immense talent. What I’ve seen at youth level and when England [Under-17s] won the World Cup, he looks the part, he looks intelligent.”

“I look for intelligence in a young player, not what he can do with the ball, it’s where he will be in five years’ time.”

Read: Chelsea fans dig at Sarri for playing Hudson-Odoi from the bench

“Will he be far better than Willian? Will he be far better than Pedro? Probably, if he’s given the chance.”

“He’s got to get the chance to go in there and get the experience under his belt.”

“He looks the part. I’m very disappointed. I expected him to be playing today I must say. You know what Pedro can do, you know what Willian can do.”

Read: Selection advice for CK Akunnor ahead of Al Hilal showdown

“He’s got to be given a chance. He’s got a talent. We don’t know how far he can go, we don’t know how good he is. He hasn’t been tested against the top teams. I’ve not seen him tear Man City apart or go in Europe and tear people apart.”

“He’s got immense talent, he looks the part but he needs the time to play. He hasn’t played enough. He’s not played 20 games, the minutes equate to eight-and-a-half matches.”

“They’re talking about selling him for £40m. He’s not proven anything yet. Eight-and-a-half games is nothing.”

  • R. Kelly doesn’t think his career is over despite sex abuse charges, Lawyer says

    R. Kelly‘s lawyer says the singer does not believe his career is over, in comments made two weeks after the star was arrested and indicted for alleged sexual abuse and days after he was jailed a second time for an unrelated unpaid child support case.

The 52-year-old Grammy-winning R&B star, whose real name is Robert Kelly, posted bail on Saturday in connected to his latest arrest. He addressed reporters briefly outside the Cook County jail in Chicago, telling them, “We are gonna straighten all this stuff out” and adding that he loves his fans, before he headed to a car, according to NBC News. His attorney, Steve Greenberg, then talked to the press.

Read: R. Kelly cries as he admits he has “zero” relationship with his kids

When asked if Kelly was concerned about his career, the lawyer said, “Of course he’s concerned about his career—wouldn’t you be concerned about your career? But he’s going to go on, he’s going to continue to make music, and he’s going to perform if he can. That’s going to be up to the judge. Does he think his career is over? No, absolutely not.”

In late February, Kelly was charged with a 10-count indictment. He is accused of felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse of four female victims, including three who were between the ages of 13 and 17 at the time, between 1998 and 2010. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which came weeks after new accusations were made against him in a Lifetime docu-series, Surviving R. Kelly. Kelly could face up to seven years in prison for each of the 10 counts, if convicted.

Read: R. Kelly’s girlfriend breaks down in tears as she fiercely defends him

In an emotional sit-down with CBS This Morning‘s Gayle King last week, his first interview since the indictment, Kelly said the allegations made against him were “not true.” When asked if he ever held anyone against his will, he replied, “I don’t need to. Why would I?”

“Forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me. Hate me if you want to, love me if you want. But just use your common sense. How stupid would it be for me, with my crazy past,” Kelly said, growing more emotional. “I didn’t do this stuff! This is not me! I’m fighting for my f–king life!”

His lawyer has also said Kelly is innocent and told reporters last month, “I think all the women are lying.”

“I got criticized for saying that all the people are lying,” Greenberg told reporters on Saturday. “This is what the law tell us…people are cloaked with a presumption of innocence. Not a presumption of guilt. A judge tells a jury, you look at that man, he is presumed innocent. You can’t prejudge anything and what people are doing is they are prejudging things. The man is innocent. The presumption is that he’s innocent. As he stood here before you today, he’s an innocent man and people should just understand that.”

“We’re gonna focus on the evidence,” he said. “We’re gonna fight the case in the courtroom. The state has yet to give us on single piece of evidence. We haven’t seen an interview, we haven’t seen a police report, we haven’t seen a videotape. When we get those things, we are gonna fight this case like we fight any other case in the courtroom, based on the evidence.”

Also in February, a judge issued an order that gave Kelly a short period of time to pay $161,663 in back child support that he owes his ex-wife Andrea “Drea” Kelly, with whom he shares three children, including one minor, or face jail time. He did not pay by the deadline and he was jailed for it on Wednesday. Upon his release, bail totaling the child support sum was posted on Kelly’s behalf.

Greenberg said there is a gag order over the child support case.

“We’re really not supposed to talk about that,” the lawyer told reporters. “The man was paying $20,000 a month in child support. He paid it religiously until he couldn’t make any more money because of all of these statements that are being made and frankly, because of the charges. So he paid the child support year after year. What’s going to happen going forward—if its going to get reduced, if its going to stay the same, that’s not in my hands.”

A manager for Kelly’s ex-wife the Chicago-Sun Times earlier this week that the singer had not made any of his payments.

Kelly’s next court date for the child support case is on Wednesday, while a hearing about the sex abuse charges has been set for March 22.
