  • No Ronaldo, no fans – Real Madrid have lowest La Liga attendance in 10 years

The post-Cristiano Ronaldo era at Real Madrid began the way the pre-Cristiano Ronaldo era ended, with a half-full Santiago Bernabeu.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale against Getafe got Julen Lopetegui’s side off to the perfect start in the 2018-19 La Liga season, but the lack of home fans was as conspicuous as the absence of their former talisman.

Just 48,466 people came through the turnstiles for the first home game of the season, which should have attracted both hardcore fans and football tourists to see some of the biggest names in world football.

The last time, Real played in front of such a paltry Santiago Bernabeu crowd was the final home game of the 2008-09 season, which came during a five-game losing streak that was started by the historic 6-2 Clasico defeat to Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, who had both Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi scoring braces.

After that loss, Los Blancos slumped to second place in the table and decided to take the risk of breaking the world transfer record to sign a certain Portuguese attacker from Manchester United. Ronaldo moved to Madrid in June 2009, spending the next nine seasons at the club where he won four Champions League titles but just two Ligas.

With Ronaldo now gone to Juventus, fans failed to turn up for Madrid’s first game of the season, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s shadow cast large over the empty seats in the stadium.

No replacement has been brought in to provide firepower in attack. Nobody can replace Ronaldo’s record of 450 goals in 438 games for Real Madrid, but new head coach Lopetegui had to rely upon the familiar faces of Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema and Bale to lead the lineup front.

Bale started the season the way he started the last two campaigns – with a goal in the opening fixture – and will be expected to take on more of the burden in attack, having played just 26 Liga games last season and 19 in the previous campaign.

The empty seats at the Bernabeu were not just down to Ronaldo’s summer switch, with the late kickoff time also hindering many younger fans from attending. Perhaps more importantly were the lack of new faces on show. Every single one of the starting XI was at the club last season, while the three substitutes brought on during the second half were also Zinedine Zidane regulars.

Fans hoping for a glimpse of new goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in action will have to wait at least another week to see the World Cup Golden Glove winner, while €45 million (£40m/$51m) wonder kid Vinicius Junior was restricted to a role on the bench.

Real Madrid may not have gotten the attendance they wanted for the opening game, but they got the three points needed to ensure they compete for the title again. The fans have not yet forgotten Ronaldo, but more victories can help the transition and get the crowds back to Santiago Bernabeu.

  • Fuel price up by 2%, COPEC calls for dialogue

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) is calling for a national dialogue over the pricing formula for petroleum products in the country.

This comes after a 2% fuel price increment which took effect on Saturday.

COPEC in a statement copied to citinewsroom.com said the rate at which fuel prices were being increased in the country “cannot and should not be allowed to continue as it threatens to only worsen the plight and hardships of the ordinary Ghanaian as well as having a negative impact on all other economic activities within the country.”

Read: Fuel prices to remain stable in August—IES

It said the national dialogue with stakeholders is to create a platform for the discussion and ensure a review of the current pricing dispensation.

“We use this opportunity to call for an immediate National dialogue on these persistent but worrying increases with a stern focus on the current fuel pricing build up to discuss and review possible adjustments to find a lasting solution to this worrying trend as any further increases will be fiercely resisted,” it said.

    Read the statement below:

THE NEED TO HAVE AN IMMEDIATE NATIONAL DIALOGUE IS NOW!

Ghanaian petroleum consumers have over the past 24 hours been hit with another fuel price increases.

Fuel prices across most Major Oil Marketing Companies within the country has seen a marginal increase of about 2% from previous market averages of 4.850/litre for both petrol and diesel to now 4.950/litre for both products.

What this means is that a gallon of petrol that until yesterday sold for Ghc 21.825 has now shot up to Ghc 22.275 or a variance of above 2.%.

Read: Fuel prices to go up by 3 percent

With marginal increases on world market prices over the past two weeks, most of the major importers however attribute the latest hikes to the bad performance of the local currency- the Cedi.

Ghanaian fuel pricing formulae once again comes into question as there seems no end in sight to these rampant and sustained increases.

The frequent price increases  are known to result from two main factors

    (I) price movements on the international market

(Ii) the performance of the Cedi.

The current global and local dynamics indeed gives little or no hope at all of the Ghanaian fuel consumer getting any reliefs in the foreseeable future with these two dynamics at play.

Whiles world market prices are projected to hover above $70/barrel with a possibility of climbing up to above $90/barrel by close of the year following from activities by OPEC and other major producing and exporting countries.

The economic activities and the over-reliance on mainly imports into the country seem not to be helping us as a country too well either as the base of the local currency seem not to be doing too well as the Cedi continues to also wobble.

Read: OccupyGhana demands whereabouts of over GH₵1bn fuel money

It thus leaves very little hope of fuel prices ever coming down to reasonable limits for the ordinary pockets as prices only seem to go up currently and is likely to continue for a very long time to come.

The levels of taxes on these products which is purely within the control of Government, also leaves very much to be desired as the taxes continue to be very high though some of the taxes have outlived their justification must be scrapped immediately.

We believe the current trend cannot and should not be allowed to continue as it threatens to only worsen the plight and hardships of the ordinary Ghanaian as well as having a negative impact on all other economic activities within the country.

We use this opportunity to call for an immediate National dialogue on these persistent but worrying increases with a stern focus on the current fuel pricing build up to discuss and review possible adjustments to find a lasting solution to this worrying trend as any further increases will be fiercely resisted

It is our belief further, that the current price deregulation programme though has its positives will also need to be reviewed to arrest the current frequent price escalations.

There have been several projections of fuel price increment over the past few months. While the increments are generally thought to be marginal, the monthly price increase over the past many months suggests a heavy financial toll on consumers.

  • How Beyoncé and Serena Williams are changing the conversation about motherhood in Hollywood and its about time

Motherhood in Hollywood is a contact sport, just ask Beyoncé and Serena Williams, two women at the top of their respective industries who’ve both recently opened up about falling victim to the societal pressure put on women after they’ve become mothers. Yes, it’s hard to believe given their extraordinary talents and unstoppable determination, but Beyoncé and Williams are just human—and want you to know it on their terms.

No strangers to performing under pressure, both superstars delivered show-stopping performances while pregnant.

In 2017, Williams was two months pregnant when she won the Australian Open, her record-setting 23rd Grand Slam win, while Beyoncé’s performance at the Grammys that same year, when she was around five months pregnant with twins Rumi Carter and Sir Carter, was a tribute to motherhood that left viewers in awe.

Williams and Beyoncé, both 36, may have made it look easy, they’ve made it clear post-pregnancy that motherhood and remaining the G.O.A.T. in their respective industries is anything but, helping to dismantle the unfair expectations put on mothers, both in Hollywood, IRL and even by themselves.

After giving birth to the twins in June 2017, Beyoncé made her epic return to the stage with a historic performance at Coachella 2018. The two-hour set, which featured over 200 back-up dancers and appearances from husbandJay-Z, sister Solangeand a reunitedDestiny’s Child, will go down as one of the best live performances of all-time… but just months earlier, the superstar was on bed rest before having an emergency c-section after experiencing preeclampsia and toxemia.

“I was in survival mode and did not grasp it all until months later,” Beyoncé wrote of the experience, which also included spending “many weeks in the NICU” and led to the star taking a six month break from the public eye.

“It had been major surgery. Some of your organs are shifted temporarily, and in rare cases,

removed temporarily during delivery,” she said. “I am not sure everyone understands that. I needed time to heal, to recover.”

Time was a luxury she didn’t give herself years earlier, as this was a far cry from her first pregnancy; Beyoncé purposefully scheduling a tour soon after giving birth to Blue Ivy Carter, now 6, as motivation to return to her pre-pregnancy form.

Williams also suffered a harrowing experience giving birth to her almost one-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia with Alexis Ohanian, which she opened up about in an article she wrote for CNN Opinion.

“First my C-section wound popped open due to the intense coughing I endured as a result of the embolism,” she revealed of the near-death experience. “I returned to surgery, where the doctors found a large hematoma, a swelling of clotted blood, in my abdomen. And then I returned to the operating room for a procedure that prevents clots from traveling to my lungs.”

Williams then spent her first six weeks of motherhood in bed, making her appearance in the Wimbledon finals just 10 months later all the more remarkable.

“I remember I couldn’t even walk to my mailbox,” Williams said during the tournament. “So it’s definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final.”

Read: Serena Williams suffers worst career defeat

But to get there, sacrifices had to be made, like missing her daughter’s first steps while she trained, an experience she shared on Twitter, admitting she “cried.”

Williams’ honesty about the heartbreak she felt over missing this moment in order to focus on her game is just one example of the tennis star helping to dismantle the “having it all” myth, choosing to focus on working hard in all aspects of her life.

“In some weird way, I still want to be the best in what I do, whether it’s fashion or tennis. I just want to be the best and I want to work the hardest. I also want to be the best mom,” Williams told E! News in May after winning her first match following her return from maternity leave. “Why limit myself?”

Whether you’re a superstar eyeing a return to the stage or a world-class athlete attempting to reclaim your title as the No. 1 player in the world after giving birth, tough decisions are part of the long journey—even when it comes to breastfeeding, something Williams revealed in her Time magazine profile.

“It’s absolutely hard to take from a guy,” Serena said of her male coach Patrick Mouratogloutelling her to stop nursing when her training schedule picked up. “He’s not a woman, he doesn’t understand that connection, that the best time of the day for me was when I tried to feed her. I’ve spent my whole life making everyone happy, just servicing it seems like everyone. And this is something I wanted to do.”

Ultimately, Williams decided to stop nursing, explaining, “I looked at Olympia, and I was like, ‘Listen, Mommy needs to get her body back, so Mommy’s going to stop now.’ We had a really good conversation. We talked it out.”

In her Vogue essay, Beyoncé shared a somewhat similar experience during her tour following Blue Ivy’ birth, during which she was “still breastfeeding,” admitting “Looking back, that was crazy.”

But her drive to immediately get back to her just emphasizes the pressure and expectations put on women—especially celebrities—to bounce right back after giving birth, and both Williams and Beyoncé’s candor shows that even some of Hollywood’s most powerful women aren’t immune to society’s ideals and expectations.

Read: Beyoncé takes Blue Ivy Carter to see Frozen on broadway

Williams admitted to using a waist trainer to make her stomach look thinner in an Instagram after feeling the pressure of social media to look a certain way post-pregnancy. “I hated that I fell victim to that,” she said. “It puts a lot of pressure on women, young and old.”

And yes, even Beyoncé felt the pressure, given society’s tendency to glorify celebrities for returning to a red carpet mere weeks after giving birth, quick to highlight their enviable post-baby body.

“After the birth of my first child, I believed in the things society said about how my body should look,” she wrote. “I put pressure on myself to lose all the baby weight in three months, and scheduled a small tour to assure I would do it.”

But over five years later, during her recovery following her harrowing C-section, Beyoncé decided to do things differently, giving herself “self-love and self-care,” writing, “I embraced being curvier. I accepted what my body wanted to be.

“After six months, I started preparing for Coachella. I became vegan temporarily, gave up coffee, alcohol and all fruit drinks. But I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves,” she continued. “I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies…To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts and thighs are fuller. I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real. Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my ass off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be.”

Unparalleled work ethics are just another trait the women share, with Williams unapologetic about her professional aspirations.

“There are records out there that I want, and I’ll get there, but in due time,” she told InStyle. “I’m always in the fast lane. I’m always extra. I have to be willing to do the work, and I have been. Because, to be honest, I feel pressure to be Serena. But these days I keep telling myself I don’t have to be anything. This is for me.”

But that doesn’t mean Williams isn’t battling bouts of “mom guilt,” doubts and fear of failing.

“Some days, I cry. I’m really sad. I’ve had meltdowns” she admitted. “It’s been a really tough 11 months. If I can do it, you guys can do it too.”

As Williams preps for the U.S. Open as the latest leg of her comeback and Beyoncé continues her OTR II Tour with Jay-Z after the surprise release of their album Everything Is Love and her historic Vogue cover, it’s clear these women have no intentions of slowing down anytime soon,

providing inspiration for an entire generation of young women—including the ones they gave birth to.

“As the mother of two girls, it’s important to me that they see themselves too—in books, films and on runways,” Beyoncé wrote. “It’s important to me that they see themselves as CEOs, as bosses, and that they know they can write the script for their own lives—that they can speak their minds and they have no ceiling.”

Luckily, they have a front-row seat, whether in a concert venue or on the court, to see how it’s done.

The Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Karim Nanyua has pledged commitment to end open defecation in the local zone by 2019 by enabling households to construct toilet facilities.

The MCE is worried that while districts like Nandom was close to achieving the district-wide Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, the Sissala East Municipality was still struggling to get ten communities to move to the ODF category.

The people were urged to see the sensitization for the eradication of Open Defecation as a collective responsibility which should not be left in the hands of the Assembly alone.

  • Ghanaian players to watch this weekend

    Emma Boateng

The man Barcelona fans will not forget so easily. Last season, the 22-year-old unexpectedly seized the headlines across the globe, as his first career hat-trick for Levante UD in a 5-4 win ended Barcelona’s dream of going the entire La Liga campaign unbeaten, but although they went on to win the title. This time, all eyes will be on him in the first game of the 2018/19 season when Levante travel to face Real Betis, and he will at least, try to find the back of the net.

Read: Meet the Ghanaians who will feature in La Liga this season

    Mubarak Wakaso

The midfielder helped Deportivo Alaves to avoid relegation last season in a fashionable style. This time, they have been handed a difficult start as they travel to Camp Nou to battle title holders Barcelona. Without a doubt, this isn’t a game any side including Real Madrid will want on opening day in La Liga. Wakaso is expected to start the game and he will hope his side survives the huge task. Countryman Raphael Dwamena will hope to make his bow in this game, even as a substitute after joining the club from FC Zurich last week.

    Kwadwo Asamoah

After the expiration of his contract with Serie A champions Juventus, the Ghanaian has moved on. And of course, he is within Italy. This time around, he has joined much fancied Inter Milan and will be in line for his league debut against Sassuolo on Sunday. With Asamoah’s fine form in the pre-season, it is a certain that he will be named in the starting team of Luciano Spalletti as they head to MAPEI Stadium. He will face countrymen Kevin Prince Boateng and Alfred Duncan who are likely to also start for the hosts.

Read: Asante Kotoko confirm proposal to play FC Barcelona

    Christian Atsu

Although, the winger failed to impress as a substitute on opening day in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, it is likely he will once again lose the starting role to Matt Ritchie in the game against Cardiff City on Saturday. However, the Ghanaian will be hoping to at least, make a cameo appearance and capitalise on it to make amends to impress coach Rafael Benitez.

    Thomas Partey

Following his splendid performance in the Uefa Super Cup against Real Madrid on Wednesday and becoming the first Ghanaian to lift the title, Partey will set sights on being rewarded with a place in Atletico Madrid’s starting XI by coach Diego Simeone when they face Valencia on Monday. The versatile midfielder may partner Thomas Lemar who joined from Ligue 1 side Monaco in the summer transfer window in midfield, as Atletico want to challenge for the title this season.
