  • VIDEO: Obinim goes into “Sakawa”, aid

The wonders of the Angel of our time, Daniel Obinim will not end anytime soon as he continues to engage in things which are known to be against the tenets of the bible.

In a latest video to hit the internet, the Angel asked people engaged in internet fraud to bring photos of their clients so he works them to bring more money.

In the video, the Angel is seen inspecting the photos of these fraudsters and promising them that he will ensure that they clients bring them more money.

One of the fraudsters who he has helped in the past to get twelve thousand euros was heard asking the Angel to work so his client increases the money he brings to him.

Another internet fraudster indicated that his client owns a private jet; something that moved the Angel of our time to say he will work him so he dolls out huge amounts to him.

  • Meet the Ghanaians who will feature in La Liga this season

Ghanaians football fans will have to keep keen eyes on LaLiga this season as a host of Black Stars have made the Spanish top flight their home for the 2018/2019 season kicking off this weekend.

With the recent acquisition of Ghana striker, Raphael Dwamena on a four-year deal, by LaLiga side Levante UD, the crop of Ghanaian talent in LaLiga this season has risen to 6.

Read: Thomas Partey becomes first Ghanaian to win UEFA Super Cup

22-year-old Dwamena made the switch from FC Zurich to Levante, after just a season and a half with the Swiss Super League club.

He joins his International teammate Emmanuel Boateng at Levante UD.

Another Ghana International, Patrick Twumasi has also joined fellow compatriot, Mubarak Wakaso at Deportivo Alaves; while (and probably the most notable of them all) Thomas Partey is a key figure on the books of LaLiga giants and current UEFA Super Cup champions, Atletico de Madrid.

Dwamena scored 28 goals, and provided 18 assists in a total 56 games for FC Zurich, and has expressed his gratitude for their support of him during his time at the club. His signing comes in timely fashion for Levante, just a day after the Frogs sealed a deal to bring Nigerian International Moses Simon to the Ciudad de Valencia.

Another new recruit with Ghanaian heritage is midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey, who joined LaLiga giants Villarreal on Tuesday.

Read: Samuel Tetteh disappointed with Europa Cup elimination

The 20-year-old arrived in the Spanish city on a season-long loan deal on Tuesday morning, to begin work with his new club. Lomotey played for Ghana Premier League club Dreams FC prior to his move to Extremadura in the Spanish lower division last season.

With a whole host of Ghanaian stars plying their trade in LaLiga, it is safe to say Ghanaian fans will have high hopes for the development of their beloved national team in years to come.

With the African Cup of Nations coming up, Ghanaian fans will be hoping their international stars carry the skill sets they have gained from playing in the best league in the world with the best players, and turn it into silverware for their beloved country.

CEO of GN Group of companies, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, has stated that the reason for pulling out of an initial merger that was supposed to take place between GN Bank, Sahel Sahara and Premium Bank was due to lack of confidentiality from one of the banks.

In July, reports suggested that the three banks were planning to merge to meet the 400 million cedis minimum capital requirement.

But shortly after the announcement, Sahel Sahara was again reported to be planning a merger with OmniBank.

  • US military parade ordered by Trump postponed ‘to 2019’

US defence officials have postponed a planned Veterans Day weekend military parade through the streets of Washington DC until at least 2019.

The parade was originally conceived to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1 and to honour veterans.

But a Pentagon official said it has now been delayed at least one year.

Read: US threatens more action against Turkey

Provisional figures released earlier on Thursday said the event could cost about $90 million (£71m) – more than three times an original estimate.

US President Donald Trump requested a parade after seeing France’s Bastille Day event in 2017 and expressing a desire to “top it”.

A Pentagon spokesperson, Colonel Rob Manning, said in a statement that the Department of Defence and the White House “have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019”.

Earlier on Thursday, a US official told the AFP news agency the planning estimate for the event had ballooned to as much as $92m (£72m).

The parade’s budget director had offered an estimate of between $10m (£7.8m) and $30m (£23.6m) when the White House announced its request in February.

A memo at the time said no tanks would be used so as not to damage the roads of the nation’s capital.

The city’s governing District of Columbia Council was critical of the plan when announced, voicing its displeasure on Twitter.

Members of the Democratic party were similarly sceptical, with congressman Jim McGovern declaring it “an absurd waste of money” on Twitter and saying Mr Trump “acts more like dictator than president”.

Read: Trump lashes out at media as newsroom denounce him

The Pentagon said the parade was planned to travel from the White House to the Capitol, and would feature a “heavy air component at the end”.

It was planned to include “wheeled vehicles only”. The focus was to be on the work of US military veterans through the ages, starting with the American Revolutionary War.

US media pointed out that Donald Trump cancelled planned military exercises with South Korea in June after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the grounds it would “save a fortune”.

Critics have also compared the parade plan unfavourably to spectacles favoured by autocratic nations.

The US had a military parade in 1991 following the end of its successful campaign to force Saddam Hussein’s troops out of Kuwait.

Some social media users questioned the purpose of the parade at all, and said instead the money should be used to directly help veterans.

  • Inter Milan star Kwadwo Asamoah set to be named new Ghana captain – Report

Kwadwo Asamoah is set to be named new Ghana captain with coach Kwesi Appiah expected to call time on Asamoah Gyan’s era, widespread media reports have claimed in the West African nation.

Asamoah, who plays for Serie A giants Inter Milan, is expected to be handed the armband as he marks his return to the Black Stars after a four-year absence.

The 29-year-old has been named in Ghana’s 23-man squad for next month’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Kenya, a leaked document has revealed.

Read: Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo chose Bashir Hayford not Liaison Team Dan Kwaku Yeboah

Circling media reports claim Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has made up his mind to make Asamoah the leader of his team – and will wear the armband for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Harambee Stars in an audition role.

Gyan‘s troubles with injuries and the decision to axe brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew from his squad in recent matches, means he will build his team around the former Juventus versatile man.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey has been handed the role on an interim basis but the 25-year-old has downplayed his chances of replacing the iconic Asamoah Gyan.

Partey has also enjoyed the backing of former Chelsea legend Michael Essien for the leadership role, but it appears Appiah is determined to build a crack team devoid of ‘premadonnas’ who threaten harmony in hid bid to end the country’s 37-year wait for an African Cup of Nations title.

Read: Government calls for dialogue with FIFA over suspension threat

Coach Kwesi Appiah sees Asamoah as a leader who can inherit the armband from record goal-scorer Asamoah Gyan.

Details are sketchy as officials remain tight-lipped on the mounting reports in the West African nation.

Appiah has kept to his earth-shattering decision of dropping brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew from his squad since the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Uganda in October last year.

  • Kim Jong-nam murder: ‘Enough evidence’ for women to go on trial

A Malaysian court has ruled that the evidence against two women accused of murdering the half-brother of North Korea’s leader is strong enough for the case to go to trial.

Kim Jong-nam died at Kuala Lumpur’s airport last year after the toxic VX nerve agent was rubbed on his face.

Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong pleaded not guilty – they say they thought they were taking part in a TV prank show.

Read: Libyan court sentences 45 to death over 2011 killings

They could face the death penalty if convicted of murder.

Defence lawyers had earlier been confident that the case against their clients would be dropped, saying it was clear they had no motive to kill Mr Kim.

But a judge on Thursday ruled that the actions of the two women – which were captured on security camera footage – were enough to infer that they had intended to kill him.

    An airport ‘prank’

Mr Kim, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong-un, had been waiting to board a flight to Macau on 13 February last year when two women approached him in the departure area.

CCTV footage shows one woman placing her hands over his face before she and the other woman leave the scene.

Mr Kim sought medical help, saying a chemical had been sprayed on him. He died on the way to hospital from what was later found to have been exposure to the banned toxic nerve agent VX.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam have said they were innocent victims of an elaborate North Korean plot.

Their defence lawyers have said they believed they were filming a TV stunt – in the days before Mr Kim’s death, they had been paid to take part in pranks where they wiped liquid on people at airports, hotels and shopping malls.

Four men – believed to be North Koreans who left Malaysia on the day of the murder – have also been charged in the case, but have not been found.

Kim Jong-nam was largely estranged from his family, after being bypassed for inheriting the leadership in favour of his younger half-brother, Kim Jong-un. He spent most of his time overseas in Macau, mainland China and Singapore.

He had spoken out in the past against his family’s dynastic control of North Korea and in a 2012 book was quoted as saying he believed his half-brother lacked leadership qualities.

North Korea has denied any involvement in the killing.

  • Libyan court sentences 45 to death over 2011 killings

A Libyan criminal court has sentenced 45 militiamen to death by firing squad for killing demonstrators in Tripoli in 2011, the justice ministry says.

They are accused of opening fire on dozens as rebel forces closed in on the capital during the uprising against former leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

It is thought to be the highest number of death sentences handed out since the overthrow of the regime, AFP reports.

Libya has struggled to restore peace since the uprising seven years ago.

Aside from the 45 sentenced to death, 54 more were given five-year jail terms and another 22 were acquitted of charges relating to demonstrator deaths.

It was not known when the accused were arrested, charged or prosecuted.

The case, referred to by the Libyan Justice Ministry as Abu Salim No 2015-1477, is known locally as the Triq al-Sareeh case.

It refers to an incident when residents of the Abu Salim district of Tripoli took to the streets to prematurely celebrate the capital nearing liberation, only to be allegedly shot dead near a highway by pro-Gaddafi residents living nearby.

The death sentences announced on Wednesday are the first known to be handed down by a Tripoli court since 2015, the BBC’s North African correspondent Rana Jawad reports.

Back then, dozens of high-profile Gaddafi-era regime officials, including his son Saif al-Islam, were sentenced to death by firing squad.

Those verdicts have not been carried out and historically most death sentence prisoners in Libya have ended up sending life in prison instead.

The years since the overthrowing and killing of Colonel Gaddafi have been marred by violence and instability in Libya, with no authority in full control.

The country has splintered and since 2014 has been divided into competing political and military factions based in Tripoli and the east.

Earlier this year some rival factions agreed to hold parliamentary and presidential elections later this year.

But international observers, including human rights groups and politicians abroad, have cast doubt on whether the ballot should and will go ahead.

  • Ancient Egyptian mummification ‘recipe’ revealed

Examination of a mummy has revealed the original ancient Egyptian embalming recipe – first used to preserve bodies.

A battery of forensic chemical tests carried out on a mummy that dated from 3,700-3,500 BC revealed the recipe and confirmed that it was developed far earlier and used more widely than previously thought.

The Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy, is now home to the mummy in question.

The findings are published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

Dr Stephen Buckley, an archaeologist from the University of York, told BBC News that this mummy “literally embodies the embalming that was at the heart of Egyptian mummification for 4,000 years”.

Dr Buckley and his colleagues worked out the chemical “fingerprint” of every ingredient, although each element could have come from a number of sources.

    So the basic recipe was:

    a plant oil – possibly sesame oil;

    a “balsam-type” plant or root extract that may have come from bullrushes;

    a plant-based gum – a natural sugar that may have been extracted from acacia;

crucially, a conifer tree resin, which was probably pine resin

When mixed into the oil, that resin would have given it antibacterial properties, protecting the body from decay.

“Until now,” he said, “we’ve not had a prehistoric mummy that has actually demonstrated – so perfectly through the chemistry – the origins of what would become the iconic mummification that we know all about.”

How did scientists find the recipe?

Dr Buckley began searching for the recipe several years ago when he and his team extracted and analysed the chemicals from Egyptian textiles that had been used to wrap mummies. The textiles are part of an Egyptian collection at Bolton Museum in the north of England.

Dating to around 4,000 BC, these particular fabrics were much older than the point at which it was believed that embalming and mummification originated. “Mummification in general supposedly started around 2,600 BC – when the Great Pyramid was being built,” Dr Buckley said.

“But we observed that there was evidence that preservation of the body started earlier than this.”

This discovery led the team to the prehistoric mummy in the Turin museum collection. It has never undergone any conservation treatments, so it provided a unique opportunity to study unpolluted ancient Egyptian chemistry.

Dr Jana Jones, Egyptologist and expert on ancient Egyptian burial practices from Macquarie University in Sydney, said: “The examination of the Turin body makes a momentous contribution to our limited knowledge of the prehistoric period and the expansion of early mummification practices as well as providing vital, new information on this particular mummy.

“By combining chemical analysis with visual examination of the body, genetic investigations, radiocarbon dating and microscopic analysis of the linen wrappings, we confirmed that this ritual mummification process took place around 3,600 BC on a male, aged between 20 and 30 years when he died.”

    Why does it matter?

The fact that this same recipe was used almost 2,000 years later to embalm the Pharaohs, Dr Buckley said, means “we have a sort of Pan-Egyptian identity well before the formation of the world’s first nation state in 3,100 BC. Its origins are much earlier than we thought”.

It also reveals an insight into how and when the Ancient Egyptians perfected an antibacterial embalming recipe that protected and preserved their dead – leaving behind the iconic Egyptian mummies we are now so familiar with.

Embalming was just one step in the careful process of preserving a body. The key steps of mummification were:

Removal of the brain – possibly using a “whisking” process to cause the brain to liquefy

    Removal of the internal organs

Putting the body into a natural salt to dry it out

Coating the body in the embalming recipe to kill bacteria and to seal it Wrapping the body in linen

“It was the drying and the embalming recipe that were key to preservation,” explained Dr Buckley.

“Egyptian mummification was at the heart of their culture.”

He added: “The afterlife was just a continuation of enjoying life. But they needed the body to be preserved in order for the spirit to have a place to reside.”

  • New South Wales battles dozens of winter bushfires

Emergency crews in Australia are battling unseasonal bushfires which have erupted across drought-stricken New South Wales (NSW).

Almost 80 fires were burning along the state’s coast on Thursday, having ripped through more than 1,000 hectares in recent days.

No lives or homes were in immediate danger, according to officials.

Winter bushfires are uncommon but have flared up this year due to dry conditions, authorities say.

Last week, the entire state of NSW was declared to be drought-affected.
“It is fair to say that the fires we are seeing today is really a result of the drought,” NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said on Thursday.

He said a combination of dry vegetation, lack of moisture and strong winds over 100km/h (75mph) had caused the fires to spread quickly.

“We don’t even need the increased temperature [of summer],” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The state typically considers its bushfire season to start in the spring month of October and run until the end of March.

In addition to winter bushfires this year, however, authorities also battled blazes in late April.

Fire bans were issued across most of NSW on Wednesday – something not seen in August for almost a decade, officials said.

Mr Fitzsimmons said crews hoped to get “the upper hand” on some fires on Thursday, but efforts would be hampered by continuing winds.

In two of the worst-affected areas, near Nowra and Ulladulla, temperatures reached only 23C (73F) on Wednesday.

Speaking about the coming summer, Mr Fitzsimmons said: “If you add 15-20C on to the conditions you had yesterday, you can imagine how volatile this will be.”

He warned that forecasts of no “meaningful rain” and hotter than normal temperatures in coming months were likely to exacerbate the threat.

  • Sack Bagbin, 53 other absentee MPs Economic Fighters

The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has submitted a petition to the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, demanding that he declares the seats of 54 absentee legislators vacant.

Fighter-General Hardi Yakubu noted in the petition dated 13 August 2018 that based on the work of Odekro, it has been established beyond doubt that these MPs have violated article 97 (1) (c) of the 1992 Constitution.

According to him, Article 97 (1) of the 1992 constitution stipulates that, “A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament; (c) if he is absent, without permission in writing of the Speaker and he is unable to offer a reasonable explanation to the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges from fifteen sittings of a meeting of Parliament during any period that Parliament has been summoned to meet and continues to meet”.

He pointed out that the Speaker has adjourned sittings for want of quorum on several occasions.

“Recently, the first deputy speaker lamented this attitude of absenteeism and said that those who absent themselves should probably not be in the House. They should leave. He was right as this is the position of the constitution. Absenteeism not only deprives us, the people of proper representation in Parliament, it can only lead to poor scrutiny of bills, agreements and other Executive actions. It also costs us money.

“The records show that for the first session (January to December 2017) of the 7th Parliament, 54 MPs violated Article 97 (1) (c) by absenting themselves from 15 sittings or more without your permission. The records also show that they did not provide any “reasonable explanation” to the Privileges Committee.

  • Passport office being resourced to perform effectively Kusi Boafo

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Public Sector Reform, Kusi Boafo, says he has taken notice of the challenges posed by the centralisation of the passport office which has forced all applicants across the nation to pick up their travelling documents in Accra.

He says, as a result, plans are in place to make passport acquisition online the way to go when the National ID cards are finally released to reduce congestion in the Accra offices.

He was speaking to Adom News following reports that passport acquisition is on hold as a result of the Hajj and the failure of other public institutions to work.

His office has been blamed, especially, considering the fact that he was one of the main critics of the former government.

  • Mobile money tax may still happen in future Govt hints

Government appears to have shelved its plan to tax mobile money transactions by deferring it.

According to a Deputy Minister of Finance, Kwaku Kwarteng, “government has not made a decision in the coming budget to impose additional taxes on mobile money as has been suggested.”

The idea of taxing mobile money transactions was first suggested by the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, during her vetting in February 2017, where she said it may not be a bad option to generate revenue for government.

But Ursula at the time added that, government was yet to consider the decision.

This caused a bit of uncertainty among users of mobile money and merchants who kicked against the move.

Speaking at the launch of the mobile money month organized by MTN Ghana, the Deputy Finance Minister however made some remarks which gave the impression that government may consider taxing such transactions in the future.

He however added that, even “if at all government is minded to introduce any taxes related to mobile money, government would do so sensitive to the consequences and would make sure that the balance is right.”

“It is not possible to at this point say that government would do one thing or would not do one thing. What I can assure you is that it is with a lot of difficulty that we made those decisions to introduce the tax measures we did during the mid-year review.”

“We are in government to do what we think is right. We believe that the focus must move from taxation to production, but we do so sensitive to the very things we need to help the private sector. We think mobile money is a good development. We are happy to support it and government will certainly take into account the many concerns that have been shared here in relation to taxing mobile money transactions if at all we are minded to consider that discussion,” he added.

    Mobile money interoperability takes off

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in May 2018 launched the first phase of the mobile money interoperability system.

Mobile money interoperability, managed by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), was to eliminate the complexities associated with transfers across the various mobile money networks in Ghana, and also reduce the cost of initiating transactions across networks.
