  • Expedite action on investigations – Fianoo pleads with govt

The chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, has pleaded with the government to expedite action on the investigations being conducted on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enable operatives of football at all levels to resume work.
“Prior to the ban of football our calender for the year was late, so we were planning to synchronise it with the other international community. Already, we have lost a lot of spectators so the present situation is likely to aggravate the issue.

Read: We have not received a withdrawal letter from Kudjo Fianoo Sports Ministry

“That is why I want to plead with government, as a matter of urgency, to speed up all forms of investigations relating to the rancour with football in Ghana. We are not exclusive with the laws of Ghana, but our plea is that government should expedite action on the investigations, punish those found culpable of indulging in all forms of malpractices so we can start playing the game we adore so much”, Mr Fianoo appealed during an interview with Graphic Sports Online.

He said if the government lifted the ban, Congress could meet to decide how to meet the October 15 deadline of Confederation of Africa Football (CAF).

Describing the current friction as worrisome, Mr Fianoo said beside the investment made by many Ghanaians in football at club level, many of the youth had also made football their sole profession.

He said it was for these reasons that government should crack the whip against those found culpable of indulging in any form of malpractices in football activities, while the game to resumes.

“Laws are made for man, so we need to go back and look at the laws governing the game, fine-tune them and eliminate all forms of manipulations for the good of the players in the football industry”, he noted.

Mr Fianoo, however, acknowledged the need for reforms in football operations in Ghana to create sanity.
‘It is important to bring sanity into football and it can only happen when we reform the game to win the confidence of football fans.

“We have accepted that football is the passion of the nation, hence the need to sanitise the game with the needed reforms to win back the lost confidence of our fans”, he stressed.

  • Many dead in Italy road bridge collapse

A major motorway bridge has collapsed near the Italian city of Genoa, leading to vehicles falling some 100m (328ft).

Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli said it was likely to be “an immense tragedy”, while police sources said at least 10 people had died.

The head of the local ambulance service was quoted by one source as saying there were “dozens of dead”.

Video footage appears to show one of the towers holding up the suspension bridge collapsing in stormy weather.

The police linked it to what they called a violent cloudburst.

The collapsed section had mostly fallen onto rail tracks below, officials told the AFP news agency, adding that cars and trucks had also fallen.

One image posted by the regional emergency services shows a truck perched at the end of the surviving bridge section immediately before the drop, and says rescue workers are operating en masse at the scene.

The bridge, built in the 1960s, stands on the A10 toll motorway and is known as the Morandi bridge. The missing section was dozens of metres in length, and ran across the span of the Polcevera stream.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica described that part of the city as “densely inhabited”.

The structure collapsed shortly before noon local time (10:00 GMT) during heavy rain.

An eyewitness told Italian public television there was a queue of traffic on the bridge at the time. Initial reports indicate there may be people trapped in the rubble.

  • Adele’s support for friend’s postpartum psychosis recovery

Adele has posted a message of support for her best friend who’s recovering from postpartum psychosis.

Laura Dockrill gave birth to a baby boy who is Adele’s godson, in February this year.

She’s since battled against the condition which can lead to hallucinations and confusion, soon after giving birth.

Adele says her story is ‘intimate and heartbreaking’ and a charity has praised them for speaking out.

Adele says she and Laura have been friends since they were teenagers and her song ‘My Same’ from the album 19 is about her.

The singer has posted a link to Laura’s story, which has been written for a parenting blog.

In it, she talks about a ‘horrific’ labour which her doctor believes might have triggered the illness.

After coming home with her son, Laura describes the feeling of having fallen out of love with her life and not knowing how she would ever change that.

She says that her skin went pale, she couldn’t eat or drink and she even started getting severe anxiety attacks.

As things got worse, Laura even accused her partner Hugo of kidnapping their baby.

Laura was eventually hospitalised and spent two weeks away from her son. She struggled to recognise herself and says ‘suicidal thoughts’ became normalised.

She now describes herself as recovering more and more each day and is ‘happy confident and strong’ after getting support from family, a psychiatrist, medication and psychotherapy.

“Postpartum psychosis is a particularly serious form of mental illness,” according to Vivien Waterfield from the charity Home-Start.

“We think that it’s often very difficult for mums to talk about the difficulties they’re having.

“Anyone in the public eye brave enough to talk about this publicly helps Mums realise they are not alone.”

The NHS describes postpartum psychosis as a ‘serious mental illness that should be treated as a medical emergency’ and advises seeing a GP immediately if you think you, or someone you know, may have developed symptoms.

Adele says in the post that ‘Mamas should talk about how you’re feeling because in some cases it could save yours or someone else’s life.’

  • New season, new aspirations for Ghanaian players

With a domestic football system fractured by corruption and effectively non-functional at the moment, the start of the English Premier League provided Ghanaian football fans a timely escape from the difficulties back home.

And Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah would have been watching with an even keener sense of interest – with the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers looming large in September, every week of the new European club season will take on an added meaning for the Black Stars boss.

The Ghana Premier League has never been the backbone of the national side but now, without it, the attention on the team will skyrocket, and a lot of that will depend on how the many foreign-based players perform.

The opening weekend of the Premier League season also suggested this could be like recent ones for Ghanaian players … one of struggles and little success.

Daniel Amartey was given a massive lift after Leicester City boss Claude Puel picked him at rightback for the season opener at Manchester United, but he’ll be hoping he didn’t blow his chance after a shaky performance.

He gave away the early penalty that set the Red Devils on their way, seemed jittery throughout, before being replaced just after the hour-mark. If he gets another chance, he definitely has to do much better.

Christian Atsu started the new season on the bench, playing 20 minutes Newcastle United’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. It wasn’t the sort of start and performance to support his claim that this will be his best season ever, though he will console himself in the fact that there is still a long, long way to go in this campaign.

Jordan Ayew, Ghana‘s best player in the Premier League last season, almost has to deal with his own version of ‘second season syndrome’. After struggling to impress following his arrival in England three years ago, he made the most of his big break with Swansea last term. It wasn’t just the goals that convinced; it was the work-rate, the energy, the pace, the ability to take on defenders, and the sheer force of will he applied during his time there.

Those qualities were absent during his time at Aston Villa, but those same qualities have earned him another crack at Premier League football at Crystal Palace, where he will be hoping to find longevity after three clubs in three years.

Yet his challenge at Palace will not necessarily be just a football one. He has already shown he can compete at Premier League level. Instead, it will be how he copes with not being the main man anymore, and how he can cope with having to fight for his place every week.

It will depend on how he deals with the fact that it is Wilfried Zaha who is the main man, or that the pressure to play Christian Benteke may be as high as the pressure to give him the chance. This is an issue because Ayew has coped best when he has had a good run.

He flew out off the blocks for Swansea when it was certain he would play every week. If he is as good as he was at Swansea, there won’t be many Palace fans worried about his record of being relegated with his last three clubs.

  • How Jordan Ayew will add quality to Crystal Palace in attack

Ghanaian midfielder, Jordan Ayew has joined Crystal Palace on loan from Swansea for the 2018/2019 season. This is coming at a point Palace are on a rise as they hope to cement a regular place in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace were dubbed to be set for relegation early on in the beginning of last season only for Roy Hodgson to come help salvage the season and got vital points at top sides in the league. Given the addition of Ayew it is high time we started highlighting how serious Palace want to take the season.

Selhurst Park has welcomed top names to the club beyond many expectations. 26 year old Ayew made the move to stay in the Premier League and this is an opportunity for him to prove his worth in the top flight. His 12 goals in all competitions for Swansea made him their player of the season last season.

Adding him to the likes of Max Meyer who joined from Schalke, Palace have a set of players for the team that can push them fight for a top half finish this new season.

From the defence to the middle of the park to the attacking line, Palace are looking ready for the new season. Cristian Benteke is fit again and at his best the quality he brings is top notch. Keeping Wilfred Zaha was another decision that will help bring out the best in Ayew, as both will be flanking the wings for Palace.

This is a great opportunity for Hodgson to stake a claim among the elite managers after fluffing his chance while serving as England national team manager. He has helped reshaped public opinion that he can still take great decisions at top flight.

Read: Ayew: Jordan Ayew set for Crystal Palace medical ahead of move from Swansea City

The management at Palace has a plan for bringing the likes of Ayew to complement the attacking football the team play and it’s simple, they also want to move out of regular relegation strugglers.

However, bettors are not sure how this transfer will improve the squad capabilities, and how odds will be affected by this move.

It is interesting to note that Palace are aiming high with a relatively decent squad with most in their mid-twenties with a manager that is 71, which will no doubt increase the rate at which fans bet on Palace with various English betting sites.

Palace are planning long term but to be able to to the long term plan, a short term ambition has to be achieved and the short term aspiration is stay safe in ten league. To do that, Ayew is just a player that can complement all they got to make it a reality.

  • Police on serious manhunt for man who shot 4 officers at Tramol Junction

Some police officers have lost their lives through the actions of criminals

The Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a middle-aged man who shot at four of its officers on patrol duty over the weekend.

Acting Public Relations Officer of the Command Victor Kofi Dosoo assured that the gunman would definitely be arrested and prosecuted.

Speaking on 3FMs Sunrise on Monday, Chief Inspector Kofi Dosoo in narrating how the incident unfolded in Sukura said the police stopped short of shooting at the escaping man as a result of the densely populated nature of the area.

He said it all began on Saturday night when the man took to his heels after spotting the patrol team at Tramol Junction in Sukura.

After giving him a hot chase, the man removed a pistol and fired at the officers, injuring all four, Chief Inspector Kofi Dosoo said.

Some civilians also suffered various degrees of injury from the gunshots, he continued.

Three of the police officers have, however, been treated and discharged.

A sergeant among the three is, however, still on admission.

“As a matter of fact, he is responding to treatment,” he said.
