  • ICAG to investigate collapsed banks auditors

The Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), says it has begun an enquiry into the role of auditors in the collapse of seven indigenous banks.

ICAG says it will take appropriate action against members who are found culpable in the collapse of the banks.

In a statement, ICAG said it “has noted with great concern the current developments in the banking industry with particular reference to the collapse of seven banks. The Council of the Institute wishes to assure the general public that the Institute has a formalised procedure to handle complaints against its members.”

ICAG said “the Professional Standards and Ethics Committee of the Institute, in line with its mandate, has initiated the necessary enquiries on the matter and an appropriate action will be taken if merit to the complaint is established.”

The move by ICAG follows concerns of the general public on why the external auditors of these banks could not pick up any signal during the audit process.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) last week revoked the licences of five universal banks, namely, Royal Bank, Construction Bank, Sovereign Bank, uniBank and BEIGE Bank.

According to the Central Bank, the action was taken due to the inability of the banks to meet existing minimum capital requirement.

Some of the troubled banks also faced liquidity issues while others obtained their licences through dubious means.

  • Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly tops in open defecation in Northern Region

The Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region has taken the last position in the latest Open Defecation Free (ODF) rankings with the Tatale-Sangule and Mion districts emerging first and second on the league table respectively.

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, which was placed at the bottom of the first ODF league table, has been placed 27th with the second highest percentage of people who defecate in the open in the region.

An assessment of the practice of open defecation conducted by the sanitation units in the 28 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies for the past six months revealed that the Sagnarigu Municipality had the highest percentage of people engaged in open defecation, while the Tatale-Sangule and Mion districts had the least percentage of people who practised open defecation.

The second edition of the ODF league table also ranked Chereponi District, East Mamprusi Municipal and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba districts in the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.

This implies that the districts recorded a drastic reduction in open defecation with more than 60 per cent of households having their own toilets with hand washing facilities.

    Launch

At a brief ceremony in Tamale on Monday, July 30, 2018 to launch the fifth Open Defecation Free (ODF) League Table Awards, certificates were presented to the highly performing assemblies for working hard to achieve the ODF status while various stakeholders were also awarded for their immense contribution to the districts to achieve the status.

The Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), Mr Alhassan Issahaku, said the surest way of achieving ODF status in the country was not only about providing clean toilet facilities, but a change in the attitude of people.

He said as of June 2016, only five per cent of communities in the region had ODF status but currently data available indicated that about 4,538 communities representing 41 per cent of the total number of communities in the region had ODF status.

    Support

“ I would like to commend the Kpandai District Assembly  and the Member of Parliament for Tatale for donating  brand new motorbikes from their coffers to the Environmental Health and Sanitation Units(EHSUs) to support  the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)  activities in the districts”  Mr Issahaku added.

He urged all MMDAs to emulate the examples and efforts of these districts and support the EHSU to achieve ODF status across the region, stating that the league table was not meant to name and shame any district, but rather to encourage them to work hard to achieve ODF status.

He also called on all stakeholders, including religious leaders, traditional leaders, MMDAs, coordinating directors and assembly members to support the fight against open defecation to improve on sanitation and hygiene in their various communities.

“Defecating in household toilets provide privacy, safety, comfort, cleanliness and respect for family. All landlords and the general public in the region are encouraged to construct and use household toilets and stop the practice of open defecation” he stressed.

For her part, a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) specialist at UNICEF, Madam Gloria Nyemda, urged all districts to work hard so that the region could achieve an ODF status by December 2019.

    Rationale

The ranking, which assesses metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) on open defecation, is aimed at ensuring a positive competition among the MMDAs in the fight against open defecation. It is also intended to encourage MMDAs to implement Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS).

  • Paul Pogba posts cryptic message pn Instagram after Manchester United win

Paul Pogba has posted a cryptic message on social media after helping Manchester United to a 2-1 win over Leicester saying he will always give his best “no matter what is going on.”

The midfielder, who was named captain for the night as United’s Premier League campaign got off to a winning start, netted a penalty after just three minutes.

The 25-year-old was lauded as a “monster” by manager Jose Mourinho following the final whistle after managing 80 minutes against Leicester despite only returning to training on Monday.

But Pogba also had his say after the game, writing on Instagram: “I’ll always give my best for the fans and my teammates no matter what’s going on.”

Pogba has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this week after stories emerged that the Frenchman has grown unsettled by some of Mourinho’s comments during the summer.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Barcelona and Juventus are both interested in signing the midfielder after Mourinho claimed the £89 million man had played well for France during the World Cup because he was fully focused on his football.

However, sources close to the club insist they have no intention of listening to offers for the former Juventus star and are adamant he will still be a United player when the European transfer window closes at the end of the month.

  • Consolidated Bank overtakes GN Bank and Ecobank Ghana

The newly established Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG) has overtaken GN Bank and Ecobank Ghana Limited to become the second biggest bank by branch network in the country.

After consolidating the operations of five erstwhile banks, CBG’s branches came up to 175 in nine regions compared to 90 branches and 67 branches in 10 regions and eight regions for GN Bank and Ecobank respectively.

While Ecobank has been operating in the country since 1990, GN Bank has been in business since 1997, first as a savings and loans company before upgrading to a bank in September 2014.

Read: Consolidated Bank has 175 branches in nine regions

CBG’s branch presence across the country, however, trail GCB Bank Limited, which has 183 location points in all the 10 regions.

This means that in terms of branches, GCB Bank tops the list followed by Consolidated Bank, GN Bank and Ecobank Ghana, in that order.

However, in terms of physical presence, GN Bank leads with 298 locations across the country.

The bank operates in the nooks and crannies of the country and aims to reach 300 locations by December this year.

Unlike branches that have more employees and offer the full bouquet of banking services, location centers offer limited services, with majority specialising in taking deposits and constrained from giving loans and undertaking foreign currency transactions.

However, despite overtaking GN Bank and Ecobank Ghana, it is not clear how the ranking will play out in terms of total assets.

Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG) on Friday announced that it now has 175 branches networks and contact offices in nine regions across the country.

This is after consolidating the operations of the five banks – uniBank, Construction, Royal, Sovereign and BEIGE banks — whose licences were withdrawn on August 1 and their good assets and all liabilities transferred to CBG.

As a result, Consolidated Bank has reiterated its appeal to customers to remain calm and continue to transact business with any of the bank’s branches nationwide.

It explained that the banks starts its operations on a strong footing and thus intend to use its size as well as the knowledge and vast experience of staff “to support large and small businesses across the country, play our part in ensuring a stable financial sector and finally support the industrialisation and economic transformation agenda of the government.”

“However, as a new bank created out of several legacy institutions, there would, of necessity, be a period of stabilisation required to synchronise our operations across all our products and channels.”

“It is our intention to make this as short as possible without disrupting or diluting our commitment to providing outstanding services to all our stakeholders,” the statement added.

  • Regular exercise ‘best for mental health’

Regular physical activity lasting 45 minutes three to five times a week can reduce poor mental health – but doing more than that is not always beneficial, a large US study suggests.

A total of 1.2 million people reported their activity levels for a month and rated their mental wellbeing.

People who exercised had 1.5 fewer “bad days” a month than non-exercisers, the study found.

Team sports, cycling and aerobics had the greatest positive impact.

All types of activity were found to improve mental health no matter people’s age or gender, including doing the housework and looking after the children.

The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry Journal, is the largest of its kind to date but it cannot confirm that physical activity is the cause of improved mental health.

Previous research into the effects of exercise on mental health have thrown up mixed results, and some studies suggest that lack of activity could lead to poor mental health as well as being a symptom of it.

Exercise is already known to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Adults taking part in the study said they experienced on average 3.4 days of poor mental health each month. For those who were physically active, this reduced to only two days.

Among people who had been diagnosed previously with depression, exercise appeared to have a larger effect, resulting in seven days of poor mental health a month compared with nearly 11 days for those who did no exercise.

How often and for how long people were active was also important.

Being active for 30 to 60 minutes every second day came out as the optimal routine.

But there could be such a thing as doing too much exercise, the study concluded.

Dr Adam Chekroud, study author and assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University, said: “Previously, people have believed that the more exercise you do, the better your mental health, but our study suggests that this is not the case.

“Doing exercise more than 23 times a month, or exercising for longer than 90-minute sessions is associated with worse mental health.”

He said the positive impact of team sports suggested that social sports activities could reduce isolation and be good for resilience, while also reducing depression.

    Complicated link
The findings back up government guidelines recommending that people should do 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

But the study has some limitations. It is based on self-reporting, which is not always accurate, and there is no way of measuring physical activity.

Dr Dean Burnett, neuroscientist and honorary research associate, from the school of psychology at Cardiff University, said the link between exercise and mental health had been difficult to pin down but this large study “strongly suggests that there is a definite association between the two”.

“However, the nature of the study means it’s difficult to say more than that with any real certainty,” he said.

Prof Stephen Lawrie, head of psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh, said it indicated that social and “mindful” exercise is particularly good for mental health – but not if it is overdone.

“I suspect we all know people who seem ‘addicted’ to exercise and if this starts to impact on other aspects of life – like foregoing social activities because one has to be up at the crack of dawn to run several miles – it might actually be bad for people,” he added.

  • A secret millionaire with an MBA and a $1m home spends her days collecting cans

Lisa Fiekowski is a secret millionaire with an intriguing exercise routine: collecting trash.

The New York Post on Wednesday published a profile of Fiekowski, a 60-something resident of Brooklyn’s upscale Prospect Heights neighborhood.

Fiekowski owns more than $8 million worth of properties around New York City, including a $1 million co-op next to Prospect Park, the Post said, citing records. But at least one of her investments is uninhabitable, thanks partially to her unusual hobby – the Post reported that she had packed one residency with an old microwave, an umbrella, toys, carpets, and other trash.

Fiekowski has been collecting cans for about a decade, telling the Post she generates $20 to $30 for a few hours of work. She said she enjoys it because she can keep active, talk to her neighbors, and keep her area clean.

“Mostly, it’s physical activity,” she told the Post.

Meanwhile, Fiekowski has an MBA from the University of Chicago, and her husband makes about $180,000 a year, the Post said. She’s worked as a marketing analyst and a stockbroker, and her parents were high-ranking economists in the US government.

“My family thinks this whole thing is horrible, but I think it’s so funny,” she said.

But while her family may not be pleased with how she chooses to spend her days, Fiekowski defends her hobby. She said the outrage around it just showed how judgmental New Yorkers have become.

“I’m an old-fashioned bohemian,” Fiekowski told the Post. “To me, what’s sad is New York used to have acceptance of people being eccentric, but now it’s like, ‘Heaven forbid!’”

Last month, the report says, the city towed Fiekowski’s 1993 Toyota Camry, which is also filled with junk, dented, and covered in graffiti. But Fiekowski said she had parked it legally.

“People were so upset that this terrible car was in the neighborhood,” Fiekowski said. “It shows you how intolerant that area is.”

Fiekowski is hardly the first ultrawealthy person to maintain a frugal lifestyle. Ingvar Kamprad, the billionaire founder of Ikea, drove the same Volvo for two decades and preferred to fly coach, Business Insider’s Tanza Loudenback previously reported.

  • Consolidated Bank has 175 branches in nine regions

Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG) says it now has 175 branches networks and contact offices in nine regions across the country.

In a press statement copied to Graphic Online, the bank said “Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited is a fully indigenous bank that is 100% owned by the Government of Ghana and is well capitalised in excess of the new capital requirements of the Bank of Ghana. The bank has a stated capital of GHS450 million, a branch network of 175, with presence in nine (9) regions of Ghana,” the statement said.

It added that following the consolidation of the operations of the defunct banks, “there would be absolutely no loss of customer deposits as we are able to meet your requirements through our various branches and channels.” It explained that the banks starts its operations on a strong footing and thus intend to use its size as well as the knowledge and vast experience of staff “to support large and small businesses across the country, play our part in ensuring a stable financial sector and finally support the industrialisation and economic transformation agenda of the government.”

  • North Korea lashes out at US diplomats over sanctions

North Korea has lashed out at the US for continuing to push for sanctions enforcement.

Pyongyang said there would be no progress towards denuclearisation if the US followed an “outdated script”.

It accused US negotiators of going against the intentions of President Donald Trump and the spirit of the summit in Singapore.

Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed at the June meeting to work towards denuclearisation.

Read: US migrants: Judge orders deportation plane turnaround

But the details of that process remain vague – North Korea did not commit to unilaterally give up its nuclear weapons and the UN says its nuclear programme is continuing.

The US has insisted it is vital to maintain diplomatic and economic pressure on the North.

“As long as the US denies even the basic decorum for its dialogue partner and clings to the outdated acting script which the previous administrations have all tried and failed, one cannot expect any progress in the implementation of the joint statement including the denuclearisation,” North Korea’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The warnings come just days after North Korea’s foreign minister called US actions “alarming”.

Last month, North Korea accused the US of using “gangster-like” tactics in the negotiations.

‘Waiting for a boiled egg to hatch’

The latest statement by the North’s foreign ministry also accused US officials of “going against the intention of President Trump” by “making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the international sanctions and pressure”.

It said “expecting any result, while insulting the dialogue partner” was “a foolish act that amounts to waiting to see a boiled egg hatch out”.

The fresh anger out of Pyongyang comes as top diplomats from the US have strongly criticised the North’s commitment to denuclearisation.

National security adviser John Bolton earlier this week said North Korea had not begun the progress, while US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said Washington was “not willing to wait for too long” for the North.

Pyongyang’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho is currently on a visit to Iran where President Hassan Rouhani warned the US could not be trusted after Tehran’s experience of having the Trump administration tear up an Obama-era deal to ease sanctions.

According to Iranian media, Mr Ri said his country would seek to retain its nuclear skills for when the US would revert to a more aggressive position against Pyongyang.

“Since we know that the US will never give up its hostile policy toward us, we will hold onto our nuclear knowledge,” he was quoted by local media.
