  • Club Africain yet to settle Siedu Salifu’s entitlements TWO years after a FIFA ruling

By the decision issued on 8th September, 2016 pending debts were found sufficient and termination by the player was, thus, made with just cause.

FIFA DRC obliged Club Africain to pay to the player all the debts together with the compensation for unilateral termination of contract with just cause.

  • Singer Demi Lovato speaks out after suspected overdose

US pop singer Demi Lovato has issued her first statement after she was taken to hospital for a suspected drug overdose last month.

In an Instagram post, Lovato, 25, said: “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction”.

“This illness is not something that… fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome,” she said.

Demi has previously spoken about her struggle with addiction, bipolar and eating disorders, and depression.

In her statement, the singer thanked her family and medics at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai hospital, saying that “without them, I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you”.

“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all your love and support.”

She said she now needed “time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery”, adding that “I will keep fighting”.

Lovato has struggled with substance abuse for years, and was feared to have relapsed in recent weeks.

Last month she cancelled her show at London’s O2 arena, announcing the news on Twitter hours before the concert was due to begin.

And in a recently released single, Sober, she sings: “Mommy, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore. And daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor.”

The song ends with the lines: “I’m sorry that I’m here again, I promise I’ll get help/It wasn’t my intention, I’m sorry to myself.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BmHH69KlY3L/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control

Her fans say the singer’s battles – often documented in her music – have helped them with their own struggles.

Raised in Dallas, Texas, Lovato first entered the spotlight on the children’s TV series Barney & Friends.

She appeared alongside the Jonas Brothers in the 2008 Disney Channel movie Camp Rock.

Lovato released her first studio album, Don’t Forget, in 2008.

In a YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated, released last October, Lovato revealed her drug use began when she first tried cocaine at the age of 17.

  • Saudi Arabia freezes Canada trade ties, recalls envoy

Saudi Arabia has said it is freezing all new trade and investment with Canada over its “interference” in the Gulf Kingdom’s internal affairs.

In a series of tweets, the Saudi foreign ministry said it was expelling the Canadian ambassador and recalling its own envoy in Canada.

The move comes after Canada said it was “gravely concerned” about the arrest of several human rights activists.

Among those arrested was Saudi-American women’s rights campaigner Samar Badawi.

Ms Badawi had been calling for an end to Saudi Arabia’s male guardianship system.

    What did Saudi Arabia say?

The foreign ministry said it “will not accept any form of interfering” in its internal affairs.

It referred to last week’s statement by the Canadian foreign ministry, which urged Riyadh to “immediately release” civil society and women’s rights activists.

The Saudi ministry described Canada’s position as “an attack” on the kingdom, saying it would now:

    • Freeze all new trade and investment transactions between the two countries
    • Consider the Canadian ambassador persona non grata and order the envoy to leave within 24 hours
    • Recall the Saudi envoy in Canada
    • Reserve the right to take further action

Canada’s government has so far made no public comments on Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic measures.

The arrests are at odds with the progressive image the government has projected this year under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He drew widespread praise last year when they announced that the decades-old ban on women driving would end on 24 June.

A woman uses a driving simulator in Riyadh (13 May 2018)

Saudi women’s rights activists, including those who have been imprisoned for defying the ban, had celebrated the decision.

But they also vowed to continue campaigning for the end of other laws they consider discriminatory.

Women must adhere to a strict dress code, be separated from unrelated men, and be accompanied by or receive written permission from a male guardian – usually a father, husband or brother – if they want to travel, work or access healthcare.

The Saudi crown prince has also spearheaded a sweeping anti-corruption drive which resulted in dozens of princes, government ministers and businessmen being detained in November and generated an estimated $107bn ($80bn) in settlements.

Dhat gyal and Chikel baby who both released their newest singles “welcome to Africa” by Dhat gyal and “Free Chop” by Chikel baby have thrown shots at each on social media and fans from these young celebrities have taken up the fight.

Dhat gyal wrote on her Facebook page that, after the premiere of her new single, she refused to talk about certain things, but could not bear the weight anymore.

She says she sees a lot of hate in the Ghana music industry as most upcoming female artistes try to hate or ride on her for fame and she does not think that will help the industry.

She referenced the late Ebony Reign‘s video in which she complained bitterly about the unity among female musicians in Ghana or the lack thereof.

On her part, Chikel responded to the post with confidence and as someone who is ready for anything. She said the Ghana Music industry is not for only talented artistes and success could also be drawn out of knowing and understanding the industry.

She emphasised the importance of knowing how to play along so that no grudges were borne. Riding on others’ fame is all part of what makes the industry strong.

Yes and I think they both have a point looking critically at both posts.

Sergio Aguero scored both Manchester City’s goals as the Premier League champions beat Chelsea to win the Community Shield on a sweltering day at Wembley.

Aguero’s first – his 200th for the club – came after 13 minutes, when he collected the ball on the edge of the area after Phil Foden surged forward, and fired into the bottom corner.

His second came after the break, when he latched on to Bernardo Silva’s pass and beat Willy Caballero with another precise low finish.

Chelsea, who are less than a month into Maurizio Sarri’s reign as manager, lacked a presence in attack and managed only one shot on target, a long-range strike by 17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi which Claudio Bravo fumbled to safety.

Some of their lethargy going forward could be put down to the heat, which made it difficult for both sides to sustain any sort of tempo.

Players were allowed water breaks during the game and some City players sitting on the bench had wet towels over their heads to try to protect them from the intensity of the sunshine.

City, who won last year’s title by 19 points, were also without some of their stars, with Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all absent.

But they produced a controlled and efficient performance to secure their third piece of silverware in the past six months. The worry for the rest of the Premier League is they have the appetite for more.

  • Asphalting of Kasoa-Accra road commences on Sunday

From Sunday, August 5, sections of the Kasoa-Accra road will be closed to vehicular traffic to pave the way for the asphalting of the portions of the roads that were cut for construction works on the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) drainage project at Mallam Junction in the Ga South municipality. The asphalting of the affected portions of the roads in the area is expected to be completed by August 11, this year, after which the entire roads will be reopened to road traffic the next day.

As part of the arrangements, the section of the Lapaz-Kasoa road at Mallam Junction will be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. on Sunday August 5 to 10 a.m. on Monday, August 6.

During the period of the closure, traffic flow from the Lapaz area will be diverted to one of the lanes on the Kaneshie-Kasoa section of the road.

On Wednesday, August 8, the Kaneshie-Kasoa stretch of the road will also be closed at the same time in the night while traffic will be diverted to one part of the Kasoa-Kaneshie road.

The final phase of the asphalting process will be done on Saturday and Sunday, August 11 and 12, respectively, during which period the Kasoa-Kaneshie stretch of the road will be closed while traffic is redirected back to the asphalted sections.

    Briefing

Briefing journalists at the site of the GAMA drainage project at Mallam Junction yesterday, the coordinator of the project, Mr George Asiedu, explained that the contractors would be carrying out the exercise at night when traffic would be minimal.

He added that efficient cooling systems would be deployed to facilitate the asphalting process within five hours after it had been fixed.

“We know that for the few days that the roads will be closed, motorists and road users will go through some inconveniences but it is in the larger interest of the public. When we fully open the entire road on August 12, the travelling public will heave a sigh of relief,” the coordinator said.

He cautioned residents of flood prone areas around Mallam to stay away from the site in their own interest.

“We are cautioning them not to go back because with the expansion work that has been done on the drains, the volumes of water that will gather when there is a downpour will affect them,” Mr Asiedu added.

    Safety

A Sanitation Engineer at the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), Mr Gabriel Engmann, said safety officers would be deployed to the project site to help pedestrains and motorists.

He, therefore, advised members of the public to bear with the contractors and adhere to security arrangements for their personal safety.
