  • We will develop pharmaceutical manufacturing sub sector – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated government’s resolve to develop the nation’s pharmaceutical industry into a world-class manufacturing sector.

He said government aimed at a 60 per cent local production of needed medicines when interventions such as flexible long-term loan facilities and “unhindered access” to markets in the ECOWAS sub-region had been installed.

President Akufo-Addo said an industrial park to competitively develop the sector up to international standards was being considered with a directive to the Ministry of Health on the procurement of locally made pharmaceutical products.

This was contained in a speech read on behalf of the President by the Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia at the 83rd Annual General Meeting of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) in Ho, on the theme “Building Capacity to lead Change in Healthcare”.

President Akufo-Addo said the country’s pharmaceutical potentials were huge and could help develop a leading market in West Africa.

“With the right pharmaceutical ecosystem, we can attract many research based pharma companies around the world which are looking to establish plants in Africa.

“These would help create employment for many, and also help deepen our research skills and capabilities as a people and change the nature of our economy significantly,” he stated.

The President said the National Health Insurance Scheme would be fixed, with advancements such as drone delivery of medical supplies to be introduced by the end of the year for an effective health system.

He called on pharmacists to consider their “crucial” roles and “lead pharmaceutical care on the healthcare delivery team”.

Mr Benjamin Botwe, President of the PSGH, thanked the President for recognising the role of the industry and said, “Pharmacists will be available to you and to serve in any capacity to ensure that we achieve our collective national objectives”.

Mr Botwe said the PSGH was “strategically positioned and well prepared” to support government develop the sector and urged the implementation of the Pharmaceutical Sector Development Strategy document.

He therefore appealed for the appointment of a development executive at the National Development Planning Commission exclusively for the project.

Mr Botwe asked professionals in the industry to work towards improving the health of the people, and called on the Pharmacy Council to “crack the whip on illegalities within the pharmacy space”.

He said its Pharmacy Centre project in Accra needed support, with others such as the model pharmacy concept and the pensions fund as priorities requiring the mandate of stakeholders.

He made an appeal to government to absorb more pharmacists into the public health sector, and urged all professionals to take advantage of skills training programmes.

The AGM kicked off with a health outreach at Tanyigbe in the Ho Municipality, where hundreds were diagnosed for common health conditions including Malaria, upper respiratory tract infections and anaemia.

Over GH¢60,000 worth of drugs were also distributed.

President Akufo-Addo was awarded an honorary fellow of the Society for his efforts at transforming the nation’s economy.

The Vice President opened a product exhibition by over 30 pharma companies.

  • We’re sticking to 5-year BOOT deal AMERI to government

Dubai-based AMERI Energy has said in a letter dated 31 July 2018 that it is committed to the five-year Build, Own, Operate & Transfer (BOOT) deal it signed with the previous Ghanaian administration and denied knowledge of a renegotiated deal with the current government of Ghana.

This comes on the back of an alleged renegotiated deal under which AMERI would be bought out per the Novation and Amendment Agreement with the government of Ghana, and handed over to Mytilineos International Trading Company for 15 years.

Per that deal, Mytilineos offered to pay AMERI off with $52,160,560, while the government of Ghana would have topped it up with $39 million.

Read: AMERI deal: Resign if you were misled Namoale to Akufo-Addo

The deal was, however, cancelled by President Nana Akufo-Addo, even though he had earlier approved it through an Executive Order, while it pended parliamentary nod.

In a letter sighted by ClassFMonline.com, AMERI, however, said: “As you are fully aware, we have never been involved with your ministry in any kind of negotiations or discussions related to this Novation and Amendment agreement.

“Moreover, also never had insight of any commercial discussion between you and the new party, therefore, could not have verified that the above permissions were not obtained at the time of presentation before parliament.

“In view of the ongoing circumstance, the management of AMERI energy has taken notice of this and would like to inform you that we shall not be deemed associated with the Novation and Amendment agreement and will only remain committed to our original BOOT agreement signed on 20th of February 2015.

“Upon the completion of our five-year term, your ministry can freely decide to handover the project to any third party at a commercial arrangement you may deem right.”

AMERI also implored the government of Ghana to pay a defaulted amount of $82, 660, 560.00, warning that failure to defray the debt could spark legal action on their side.

  • Steve Jobs’ daughter recalls their troubled past amid Apple’s rise to $1 trillion

Just before Apple made history by surpassing $1 trillion in market value, Steve Jobs’ daughter opened up about her troubled relationship with the company’s co-founder.

Lisa Brennan-Jobs, the now 40-year-old daughter of Jobs, shared her story in her memoir, Small Fry. Vanity Fair published excerpts from the book on Aug. 1.

Brennan-Jobs was born in 1978—just two years after Apple’s founding. Jobs, who was only 23 at the time, denied fathering the child. However, according to the memoir, he still flew out to meet the child and help her mother, Chrisann Brennan, choose a name.

Per the book, Brennan-Jobs’ mother was on welfare, and performed jobs like cleaning houses and waitressing to make ends meet. In 1980, Jobs was sued for child support. While he continued to deny paternity of Brennan-Jobs, he was allegedly forced to undergo a DNA test. According to the published excerpt, the odds of a match came in at 94.4 percent.

Read: Apple becomes 1st private company worth $1 trillion

Brennan-Jobs wrote Jobs was ordered to pay child support and later provided her with medical insurance until she was 18.

Before the case was finalized on Dec. 8, Jobs allegedly visited his daughter for the first time since her birth.

“You know who I am?” he asked, per Brennan-Jobs’ memoir. “I’m your father.”

Brennan-Jobs said her mother told her Jobs sounded like Darth Vader when he uttered these words. She also wrote that her father told her he was “one of the most important people you will ever know.”

However, on Dec. 12, 1980, everything changed. Apple went public and Jobs became a multimillionaire. According to the published excerpts, Jobs would stop by Brennan-Jobs home and go roller-skating with her and her mother.

Brennan-Jobs admitted she would talk about her father with her mother after he would leave. In the book, she wrote that she once overheard her mother say he bought a new Porsche every time he scratched his car. After a while, Brennan-Jobs “assigned mystical qualities” to her father—his “zipper teeth, his tattered jeans, his flat palms”—and talked about him to her classmates.

“I have a secret,” she recalled saying to her friends at school. “My father is Steve Jobs.”

Over the years, Brennan-Jobs claimed she tried to will her relationship with her father to work.

“For a long time I hoped that if I played one role, my father would take the corresponding role. I would be the beloved daughter; he would be the indulgent father,” she wrote in the book, per Vanity Fair. “I decided that if I acted like other daughters did, he would join in the lark. We’d pretend together, and in pretending we’d make it real. If I had observed him as he was, or admitted to myself what I saw, I would have known that he would not do this, and that a game of pretend would disgust him.”

In the memoir, Brennan-Jobs recalled asking Jobs if she could have his Porsche when he was finished with it.

“Absolutely not,” he said, per her book. He allegedly later added, “You’re not getting anything. You understand? Nothing. You’re getting nothing.”

Despite their complicated relationship, Brennan-Jobs held onto one thing— a story that her father had named a computer after her. In the book, the author described the Lisa as a “precursor to the Macintosh” and a “commercial failure.”

In the book, she claimed she’d use this story to “bolster myself” and feel “connected to him in a way.”

“It would mean I’d been chosen and had a place, despite the fact that he was aloof or absent,” she wrote, per Vanity Fair’s published excerpts. “It meant I was fastened to the earth and its machines. He was famous; he drove a Porsche. If the Lisa was named after me, I was a part of all that.”

So, she decided to ask him. However, she claimed her father denied it, adding a “Sorry, kid.”

It wasn’t until years later when she became an adult that she would hear a different answer. When she was 27, she went on a trip to the Mediterranean with Jobs, his wife Laurene Powell and his three other children: Eve, Reed and Erin. During the trip, the family had lunch with Bono and the U2 singer asked Jobs if the Lisa was named after his eldest child.

“My father hesitated, looked down at his plate for a long moment, and then back at Bono,” she wrote in the memoir. “‘Yeah, it was,’ he said.”

Jobs died in 2011. Brennan-Jobs recalled visiting her father in the time leading up to his death.

“For the past year I’d visited for a weekend every other month or so,” she wrote. “I’d given up on the possibility of a grand reconciliation, the kind in the movies, but I kept coming anyway.”

  • Ludacris brings Georgia woman to tears in powerful random act of kindness

Ludacris is giving a new meaning to Southern hospitality and he best prepare for a massive amount of positive karma coming his way.

On July 30, a woman named Therra took to Twitter to explain and interaction she had with the Atlanta-based rapper while in line at Whole Foods, and E! News has confirmed her account. Therra called her chance encounter with Ludacris “the most amazing, infusion-of-joy thing.”

So what exactly happened at Whole Foods?

In a nutshell, Ludacris purchased Therra’s groceries. But there’s more—so much more—to this moving story.

In her first tweet, Therra wrote, “He was ahead of me in line when the food for my 4 rescued dogs & 2 rescued cats (and elderly, blind chicken named Dixie Licklighter) ended up in with his stuff.”

After Therra realized her pet food ended up in the same pile as the rapper’s groceries, she spoke up to the cashier. Ludacris told Therra that he would just pay for it. She even tried to tell Ludacris and the cashier that it was enough: “I even tried to stop the cashier at a certain amount and he stopped me, “I said I got this,” he said.”

Therra, immediately taken aback, began to cry. She compared the “Roll Out” rapper to modern-day superheroes: “I stared wide-eyed at this handsome young stranger as if he’d just dropped through the ceiling like a black James Bond, like a Batman, like the Black Panther.” (Perhaps coincidentally, Ludacris posted an Instagram earlier in the week of him holding a pair of Nike high tops with the caption “Wakanda Forever B—-ttttccchhh!!!”)

Ludacris and Therra engaged in some “small talk” after the total of the groceries ended up costing $375. “I’m talking to an angel,” she recalled.

Therra did not realize this mystery man was Ludacris, for he merely introduced himself as “Chris.” When she asked, “Who ARE you?” he replied, “Just a guy.”

This recipient of Ludacris’ generosity went on to illustrate exactly why her meeting Ludacris was such a fateful circumstance. She explained: “What Ludacris had no way of knowing is that I can’t really afford to shop at Whole Foods. Not much, anyway. I was there because my kind friend (Miracle Mary I call her) gave me a gift card b/c she knew I’d had a verrrrry rough time recently.”

Therra’s “rough time” involved many facets of her home and personal life. Her husband died of brain cancer, “and climbing out of that hole, emotionally, physically and financially, has devastated me for four years.”

Losing her husband wasn’t all that was emotionally ailing Therra. She wrote, “What Ludacris had no way of knowing is that I’m Hurricane Katrina survivor and I lost my mother because of that unnatural disaster.”

In the end, Therra hopes her moment with Ludacris will inspire others and herself. “He used his personal light to fire up my own. Isn’t that what we should be doing for each other?” she tweeted.

She has 4 words for all of us to follow: “Be like Ludacris y’all.”

  • Osama Bin Laden – Mother Alia Ghanem remembers ‘good child’

The mother of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has spoken publicly about her son for the first time, seven years on from his 2011 death.

Alia Ghanem gave an interview to British newspaper the Guardian from the family’s home in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

She told the publication her son had been a shy and “good child” growing up, but was “brainwashed” at university.

The family say they last saw Bin Laden in 1999, two years before the 9/11 attacks, when he was in Afghanistan.

By that time he was considered a major global terror suspect, after moving to the country initially to fight the invading Soviet forces in the 1980s.

Read: Russian helicopter crashes, deaths feared

“We were extremely upset. I did not want any of this to happen. Why would he throw it all away like that?” Ms Ghanem told the newspaper, when asked how she felt after learning her son had become a jihadist militant.

She also said the Muslim Brotherhood organisation, which her son became involved with while studying, was like a “cult”.

The Bin Laden family remain one of the most influential families in Saudi Arabia after gaining vast wealth in construction.

Bin Laden’s father, Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, divorced Alia Ghanem three years after Osama’s birth, and had more than 50 children in total.

After the 9/11 attacks, the family say they were interrogated by the Saudi government who then limited their travel and movement.

Journalist Martin Chulov writes in the piece that he believed the gulf kingdom granted him permission to speak to Ms Ghanem because senior officials hoped it would demonstrate that the former al Qaeda leader was an outcast and not a state agent, as some have alleged.

Two of Bin Laden’s brothers, Hassan and Ahmad, were also present for the Guardian interview and described their shock at learning of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks.

“From the youngest to the eldest, we all felt ashamed of him. We knew all of us were going to face horrible consequences. Our family abroad all came back to Saudi,” Ahmad told the newspaper.

He also said his mother remains “in denial” about Bin Laden 17 years on from the 9/11 attacks, instead blaming the people around him.

    Bin Laden timeline

1957: Born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His parents separate and his father dies in a helicopter crash in 1969. He studies in Jeddah, before going to fight Soviet forces in Afghanistan, where he forms his own armed brigade

1988: Founds al-Qaeda, meaning “the base”

Read: North Korea continuing nuclear programme UN report

1989: Returns to Saudi Arabia after the Soviets withdraw. He is expelled and he and his followers go to Sudan, then later return to Afghanistan

1993: His family expels him as shareholder in the family businesses, and the Saudi government revokes his citizenship.

1996: Declares war on US forces

1998: Issues a joint fatwa with other Islamists espousing a religious authorisation for indiscriminate killing of Americans and Jews around the world. Deadly attacks in US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam are blamed on al-Qaeda. The US authorises air strikes on his compound in Afghanistan. He begins to move around more frequently to stay safe

2000: Seventeen US sailors are killed in an attack on the USS Cole destroyer in a Yemeni port

2001: Four US commercial airliners are hijacked by 19 followers. Two destroy New York’s World Trade Centre and a third hits the Pentagon. The fourth crashes in Pennsylvania killing everyone on board. Nearly 3,000 civilians are killed. George W Bush says Bin Laden is “wanted dead or alive” and launches attacks on Afghanistan

2002-2010: Thought to have escaped into Pakistan in late 2001. Footage and recordings of Bin Laden are intermittently released by al-Qaeda throughout the decade as US continues hunting him

2011: US Navy Seals raid his compound in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad and shoot him dead. Four other people in the compound are also killed. Bin Laden is buried at sea after an Islamic funeral on a US aircraft carrier

  • Zimbabwe election: President Mnangagwa calls for unity

Emmerson Mnangagwa says he will be a leader for all Zimbabweans in a call for unity after rows broke out over his election victory.

The president appealed for peace and promised an independent investigation into the military after six people were killed in post-election violence.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has described the president’s victory as a “coup against [the people’s] will”.

This was the first election since long-term leader Robert Mugabe was ousted.

Speaking at a press conference, President Mnangagwa said that Mr Chamisa would have “a crucial role to play in Zimbabwe’s president and its unfolding future”.

Read: Zimbabwe: Gunshots, teargas fired as army clashes with opposition supporters (Reuters)

He asked the opposition leader to join him in calling for peace and unity in the country, and promised that people’s civil liberties would be protected.

Mr Chamisa had earlier called the results “corrupted” and said his MDC Alliance would pursue all legal and constitutional avenues to challenge it.

The opposition leader said he had evidence that ballot boxes were being transported in open trucks allowing them to be tampered with.

He also raised discrepancies between vote tallies, and said his election agent had not been allowed to verify the results on Thursday.

Figures released by the electoral commission say Mr Mnangagwa and his Zanu-PF party won 50.4% of the presidential vote – ensuring by only 36,464 ballots that there did not have to be a run-off.

Read: No presidential results today: Zimbabwe electoral body says

Chamisa tallied 44.3% of the almost five million votes cast, with the 21 other candidates taking up the remainder.

Results of the parliamentary election gave Zanu-PF 144 seats; the MDC Alliance, which is made up of seven parties, 64 seats, and one seat to the National Patriotic Front, formed by Mugabe loyalists.

    Test for Mnangagwa

Analysis by BBC Africa editor Fergal Keane

The political drama in this country has oscillated between euphoria, tragedy and farce – from a remarkably peaceful election day, to the shooting down of unarmed protesters, to the extraordinary sight of a president disowning the actions of his own police.

Each day has produced the unexpected and created a febrile atmosphere in which questions about who really controls this country have deepened.

Is it Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over as president after the military takeover in November and won Monday’s disputed presidential vote, or hardliners steeped in the brutal practices of the Mugabe era?

Mr Mnangagwa needs to show that he is in charge of his security establishment and that he is willing to punish those who have abused civilians.

That will be a test of his democratic credentials but also of his relationship with the generals.

If he does not the conviction will deepen – at home and abroad – that nothing has changed.

    Zimbabwe’s euphoric and tragic election

What is the mood in the capital?

A calm polling day raised hopes of a new peaceful era in Zimbabwe, but as results were counted the capital turned violent.

Police have been patrolling the streets of city after clashes between protesters and police on Wednesday left six people dead.

Authorities have faced criticism for raiding the MDC Alliance headquarters and trying to disperse journalists before Mr Chamisa gave a press conference.

They have since apologised, and President Mnangagwa tweeted that what the police tried to do had “no place in our society”.

Harare is seen as an opposition stronghold, and correspondents say the city is quieter than normal as people digest the vote.

Mr Mnangagwa has vowed to revitalise Zimbabwe’s tattered economy after decades of international isolation under Mr Mugabe.

The country has suffered from rampant inflation and high levels of poverty. The unemployment rate last year was as high as 90%, according to Zimbabwe’s biggest trade union.

  • Zimbabwe election: Opposition calls poll results a ‘coup’

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s election victory is a “coup against [the people’s] will”.

Nelson Chamisa repeated his claim that the results announced late on Thursday night were fake, and said he had won Monday’s presidential poll.

The electoral commission said “no skulduggery” was involved in the vote tally.

This was the first election since long-term leader Robert Mugabe was ousted.

Earlier, in a tweet, Mr Mnangagwa urged Zimbabweans to unite to create “a new beginning” after a vote that was intended to set Zimbabwe on a new path following years of repressive rule.

    What is Nelson Chamisa saying?
Addressing journalists on Friday afternoon, Mr Chamisa called on his rival not to accept “corrupted results”. He added that his MDC Alliance would pursue all legal and constitutional avenues to challenge the official result.

The opposition leader said he had evidence that ballot boxes were being transported in open trucks allowing them to be tampered with.

He questioned the discrepancies in the numbers of votes tallied in the parliamentary elections compared with the presidential poll. Both elections took place at the same time.

Mr Chamisa also said that his election agent was not allowed to verify the results on Thursday.

What is the situation in Harare?
Riot police initially prevented the opposition MDC Alliance from holding a press conference in the capital and chased reporters away. The authorities later apologised saying that they thought an unlawful public gathering was being organised.

President Mnangagwa tweeted that what the police tried to do had “no place in our society”.

Police are patrolling the streets of city after clashes between protesters and police on Wednesday left six people dead.

A police vehicle with a loudspeaker has been broadcasting the message: “Zimbabwe is open for business. We are here to protect you. Feel free to walk and open your business. All is well, fear not.”

The city, which is seen as an opposition stronghold, is quieter than normal as people are digesting the outcome, correspondents say.

But there were celebrations in one part of Harare. The president’s supporters in the suburb of Mbare took to the streets to welcome the news.

    How close was the result?
Mr Mnangagwa avoided a run-off by just 36,464 votes out of more than 4.8 million cast.

Official results show he took 50.8% of the vote to Mr Chamisa’s 44.3%. The 21 other candidates took up the remainder.

At the last election, Mr Mugabe won 61% of the vote, with the opposition’s main candidate, the late Morgan Tsvangirai, winning 34%.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) finished announcing the presidential election results in the early hours of Friday morning, after days of waiting.

Zec acknowledged that the wait had caused anxiety, and international observers had earlier urged the commission to speed up the announcement. Under the constitution, the commission had until Saturday to declare the result.

The results of the parliamentary election were announced earlier in the week. They gave Mr Mnangagwa’s Zanu-PF 144 seats; the MDC Alliance, which is made up of seven parties, 64 seats, and one seat to the National Patriotic Front, formed by Mugabe loyalists.

Although Zanu-PF won by a landslide, its majority has shrunk since the 2013 election when it obtained 160 seats and the MDC 49.

A respected Zimbabwean independent monitoring group has added weight to the official result.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Support Network said, according to its sample survey, that Mr Mnangagwa had probably won enough support to avoid a run-off, though it left room for some doubt.

  • Drake’s In My Feelings: What we learned from the new video

Drake’s In My Feelings is one of the biggest hits of 2018 – and now it has a big budget video to go with it.

Of course, you’ve probably watched a lot of In My Feelings videos already, because the song also sparked one of the biggest dance crazes in years.

Comedian Shiggy first invented a dance for Drake’s song, which has been attempted by some of the biggest stars in the world.

Although in many places, the police are warning people not to attempt a related “challenge”, in which people jump out of a moving car and dance alongside it while Drake’s song plays.

The official In My Feelings video is eight minutes long, so if you don’t have the time (or data allowances) to watch it right now, here’s what we’ve learned by watching it.

    1. Drake has still got the acting skills

Drake is the biggest rapper on the planet but he had some success as an actor in his early years.

And he reminds us of this with a Shakespearian introduction as he courts an elusive girlfriend.

    2. We finally get to meet Kiki

Or maybe it’s KB. Or ‘Resha. Or JT. There’s more than one girl who gets a namecheck in the song, so at this time – this lady’s name is currently TBC.

    3. Drake is not too cool to be shut down by his girlfriend’s mum

His attempts to woo Kiki (or whatever her name may be) are thwarted by the arrival of her mum.

“Get your Jordans off my lawn,” she tells him. “And when you leave, don’t forget to go.”

    4. Drake doesn’t actually do The Shiggy

Drake busts a fair few moves in the video, but the one he doesn’t do is The Shiggy – the dance that has helped rocket the song to global success.

Dancing Drake is the best Drake.

    5. But don’t worry, Shiggy turns up to do The Shiggy

Well hello there extended cameo. This video could be what takes comedian Shiggy from internet sensation to a household name.

    6. Drake being Drake, he’s not short of female company…….

What can we say, he’s a popular guy.

    7. But there are no topless women in the video

Hip hop videos have a bad reputation for exploiting women, who are often seen dancing in very little clothing.

But the only nipples we see in this video belong to Shiggy.

    8. Like all the best narratives, it was all just a dream

Things get meta. Drake seems a little shocked at the idea of dancing in New Orleans with a grill in his mouth – and even the fact that Will Smith had got involved gets mentioned in the video’s finale.

    “It was terrible,” he says.

The millions of views on the video suggest Drake might be alone in thinking this.

    9. Or was it…

That runner looks a lot like that guy off the internet who invents dance crazes, don’t you think?

  • Govt to launch national public sector reform strategy

Government is set to implement a national public sector reform strategy which is expected to transform public institutions and improve service delivery.

The five-year strategy will target institutions such as the passport office, Births and Deaths Registry among others for improving client service, turnaround time and other key deliverables.

Briefing the press, CEO of the Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo, said the strategy is critical to the Ghana beyond aid agenda which will be launched by the President next week.
Highlighting the essence of the programme, Mr. Boafo said: “I want people to know that unless the private sector improves and citizens become happy, there is no good government and that is why this government has taken it as a serious measure to ensure that with all your support and your corporation, a vibrant public institution is established.

According to Mr. Boafo, the previous government developed a national public sector reform strategy document which was to be implemented from 2017 to 2027.

He was however quick to add that the document has been reviewed by the current government to a five year period, starting 2018 to 2023.

An educational forum is expected to be held at three zones, the southern, middle belt and northern to brief the public about the new strategy.

When you visit areas that are performing well, it is not by magic; it is by people saying that we have changed our attitude and we want to build Ghana. Having an agenda of Ghana beyond aid, with weaker public institutions will get nowhere.”

  • Seventeen arrested in oil smuggling scheme

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) says it has in collaboration with National Security and the Ghana Armed Forces arrested 17 persons engaged in smuggling and siphoning of oil in two separate operations.

The first incident netted 13 persons suspected to be part of a cartel dealing in smuggling of petroleum products.

A statement issued by the NPA said the suspects who were arrested following a tip-off, were transferring fuel from a ship to drums and gallons around the shores of Aflao in the Volta Region.

“Seven drums, 76 empty drums, 32 filled yellow gallons (25 liter) of diesel and 20 empty containers were retrieved from them during the operation that lasted for about five hours.”

The NPA said investigations revealed that the suspects used only text messages to communicate with the captain of the ship and are only able to identify the particular ship they are to approach to conduct their illegalities when lights in all other docked ships are off.

In the second case, four people are in the custody of the Eastern Naval Command for engaging in illegal siphoning of fuel from two “canoe tankers” to fuel tanker vehicle.

The four suspects – Ali Christopher, Nii Armah Odatey, Richard Adjetey and Yetawell Immabasalam were arrested during their operation at the Tema Fishing Harbour around 12 midnight.

The NPA said the tanker vehicle with registration number GN 2931-12 was confiscated together with 16,000 litres of fuel, a pumping machine and fuel hose.

“Unfortunately, the tanker boats and its operators slipped away. A seaward search was mounted for the boats but proved futile”, the NPA said, adding that it is determined to sanitize the industry and therefore urged the public to continue with their support in the fight against fuel smuggling.

  • Delays in payment of book and research allowance worrying UTAG

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), are outraged over delays in the payment of book and research allowance for lecturers.

The teachers earlier threatened a strike if the government failed to pay them their 2017/2018 book and research allowance immediately. The ultimatum they gave elapsed on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

President of UTAG at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Addah Weseh, who spoke to Citi News said the government had not dealt properly with the Association. “After our press conference, we gave the government some time to respond our needs and that time has now elapsed. We are not hearing any official response from the government. We were asked to go back to consult our members on the next line of action”, he intimated.

Professor Weseh further described the silence as worrying, saying “so far the unofficial response we are getting is that our members are now getting tired every year, threatening a strike before what is due us is paid us. That is becoming very problematic.”

    UTAG meets members

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are expected to meet in all public tertiary education institutions nationwide to decide on the next line of action after the ultimatum elapsed.

The Association had set Wednesday, July 31, 2018, as the deadline for the payment of outstanding book and research allowances to lecturers.

In an interview with Citi News, President of UTAG, Dr. Eric Opoku said the allowance is a condition of service for lecturers.

“On Thursday [August 2, 2018] we are having meetings on our respective campuses. We will collate all those ideas and inform government on our next line of action. The book and research allowances are an essential part of our conditions of service”, he said.

    Book and Research allowance

The book and research allowance is provided by the government to public universities for the purpose of the funding researches in academia for national development.

But each year, it appears UTAG has to threaten or in extreme cases embark on a strike for government to meet their demands.
