  • Delays in payment of book and research allowance worrying UTAG

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), are outraged over delays in the payment of book and research allowance for lecturers.

The teachers earlier threatened a strike if the government failed to pay them their 2017/2018 book and research allowance immediately. The ultimatum they gave elapsed on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

President of UTAG at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor Addah Weseh, who spoke to Citi News said the government had not dealt properly with the Association. “After our press conference, we gave the government some time to respond our needs and that time has now elapsed. We are not hearing any official response from the government. We were asked to go back to consult our members on the next line of action”, he intimated.

Professor Weseh further described the silence as worrying, saying “so far the unofficial response we are getting is that our members are now getting tired every year, threatening a strike before what is due us is paid us. That is becoming very problematic.”

    UTAG meets members

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are expected to meet in all public tertiary education institutions nationwide to decide on the next line of action after the ultimatum elapsed.

The Association had set Wednesday, July 31, 2018, as the deadline for the payment of outstanding book and research allowances to lecturers.

In an interview with Citi News, President of UTAG, Dr. Eric Opoku said the allowance is a condition of service for lecturers.

“On Thursday [August 2, 2018] we are having meetings on our respective campuses. We will collate all those ideas and inform government on our next line of action. The book and research allowances are an essential part of our conditions of service”, he said.

    Book and Research allowance

The book and research allowance is provided by the government to public universities for the purpose of the funding researches in academia for national development.

But each year, it appears UTAG has to threaten or in extreme cases embark on a strike for government to meet their demands.

  • Apple becomes 1st private company worth $1 trillion

Apple became the first private-sector company to surpass $1 trillion in market value Thursday following its latest surge after reporting strong quarterly earnings.

Shares of Apple briefly hit $207.05 in late-morning trading, before retreating somewhat. The gains came after the iPhone maker reported strong earnings late Tuesday that prompted a two-day rally in the share price.

The company’s stock was at $206.85, up 2.7 percent near 1620 GMT. Apple said it currently has 4.83 billion shares outstanding.

As with other landmarks — such as the Dow crossing 25,000 for the first time — the Apple record is significant because of its resonance beyond the financial universe.

“The $1 trillion mark is more psychological, and sends a message of growth and size into the market,” said Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices.

But many financial insiders view the record as a non-event, despite breaching the psychological barrier.

“There’s no real excitement on the trading desk,” said Karl Haeling of LBBW. “It’s one of those things that does not mean anything by itself… it’s more a testimony of the importance of Apple on the market.”

The landmark is the latest victory for Apple chief executive Tim Cook, who faced skepticism when he took reins of the iconic technology giant in 2011.

He took over after the death of founder Steve Jobs, who was identified with launching many of Apple’s most iconic products, including the iPhone smartphone and the iPad tablet.

But Cook has gradually won accolades from investors by pumping out a series of solid financial results and further spreading Apple’s products to China and other foreign markets.

On Tuesday, Apple reported that net profit jumped more than 30 percent to $11.5 billion. Revenue in the fiscal third quarter soared 17 percent to $53.3 billion from the same period a year earlier due to sales of pricier iPhones, online services and wearable devices.

The record also cements the continued supremacy of US technology companies to the broader market, with other large technology giants Amazon, Google-parent Alphabet, Microsoft and Facebook regularly rounding out the top five in market

Apple is the first private sector company to reach this level, but state oil company PetroChina briefly broke the $1 trillion barrier in 2007 during its initial public offering, but has since dropped back down.

  • Pope Francis declares death penalty inadmissible in all cases

Pope Francis has changed the teachings of the Catholic faith to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances, the Vatican has said.

The Catechism of the Church, which sums up the teachings, had previously stated that the death penalty could be used in some cases.

It now says it is “inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”.

Read: Two university students sentenced to death by hanging

Pope Francis has in the past spoken out against executions.

Last October, he had said the Church’s policy on the death penalty was one area where teaching was not static and could change with modern concerns.

The text of the catechism was first set by Pope John Paul II in October 1992.

The teachings had earlier stated that the death penalty was “an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good”.

However, the new text says there is “an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes”.

It also argues that today’s more effective detention methods protect citizens and “do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption”.

The Church will now work with determination for the abolition of the death penalty worldwide, a statement from the Holy See said.

Historically, the Church has mostly been unopposed to the death penalty, including into the 20th Century. In 1952, Pope Pius XII said it was not a violation of the universal right to life.

Pope John Paul II argued for imprisonment over execution wherever possible, although Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI, wrote that the death penalty could be permissible.

  • Zimbabwe election: Army patrols ‘ghost town’ Harare

Businesses have shut in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, as the nation awaits the results from the heavily disputed presidential election.

Armed soldiers and police are on patrol, ordering people to “behave”.

Three people were killed in the city on Wednesday in clashes between the security forces and supporters of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

He says Monday’s elections were being rigged to give President Emmerson Mnangagwa victory.

The elections were the first since long-time ruler Robert Mugabe was ousted in November.

The polls were intended to set Zimbabwe on a new path following Mr Mugabe’s repressive rule.

However, Mr Chamisa’s MDC Alliance has accused the military of using excessive force to quell Wednesday’s protests.

Mr Mnangagwa said the government was in talks with Mr Chamisa to defuse the crisis and proposed an independent investigation to bring those who were behind the violence to justice.

“This land is home to all of us, and we will sink or swim together,” Mr Mnangagwa said in a series of tweets.

No violence was reported on Thursday. A truckload of armed policemen and soldiers were driving around the city shouting, “Behave yourself, people of Zimbabwe.”

A BBC reporter in Harare says the city centre is like a “ghost town”.

Riot police have also taken positions around the headquarters of the MDC Alliance.

    ‘No skulduggery’
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has declared Mr Mnangagwa’s Zanu-PF party the winner of the parliamentary election, with a two-thirds majority.

It has not released presidential election results, saying party agents were still verifying the result and there was “absolutely no skulduggery”.

Zec confirmed its website had been hacked, saying it took it down “within 11 minutes” of the attack.

Zanu-PF, which has been in power since the country gained its independence 38 years ago, denies there has been any rigging.

  • Government invites proposals for the establishment of Bauxite Refinery

Government is inviting corporate entities and individuals interested in setting up a bauxite refinery to begin talks over the venture.

Minister of Land and Natural Resources, John Peter Amewu who announced this says Nyinahin, Kyebi and Awaso have enough bauxite reserves that can power a long-term refinery.

It is believed the reserves from the three sites could provide the raw material needed for the refinery in 50-years.

“The good thing is that, if you combine Nyinahin, Kyebi and then this current site that we have, we have extensive reserves that will enable creations and formations of a refinery,” he said.

Parliament recently passed into law the Ghana Bauxite Integrated Aluminium Industry Act, 2018, which would be the legal framework to take advantage of the opportunity of the vast bauxite resource available to help in economic development of the country

According to Mr. Amewu, the move forms part of efforts to add value to the mined mineral to the benefit of Ghanaians.

“So I think we will call on companies that are interested to begin to talk to government and see how we can establish a refinery that will, of course, benefit the company and then Ghanaians in general rather than take it out in its current raw state. So the way forward is to go into refinery.”

Mr. Amewu who announced this during a day’s visit to the Ghana Bauxite Company in Awaso also announced a similar refinery to refine 30 percent of Ghana’s gold will be ready in November this year.

“In the gold industry, plans are far advanced to start refining 30 percent of the gold. I am sure by November, we should be able to execute that agreement where 30% of Ghana’s gold from those mining companies would be refined. So these are some of the things we are doing in terms of value addition,” he revealed.

Officials of the Ghana Bauxite Company in 2011 began talks with the government to establish a refinery.

Lack of commitment on the part of the government, reliable power supply and enough tonnage of ore to feed the refinery stalled the discussions.

Mr. Amewu, however, wants the Ghana Bauxite Company to take advantage of the recently passed law, Ghana Bauxite Integrated Aluminium Industry Act, 2018, the legal framework to process bauxite into aluminum.

  • Gabrielle Union reveals her plan to make Dwayne Wade feel ”special” on their anniversary

Better make those dinner reservations, Dwayne Wade! Gabrielle Union is already prepping for your fourth wedding anniversary.

E! News’ Zuri Hall sat down with the forever glowing celeb to discuss her appearance in Hallmark’s new docuseries, Put It Into Words, as well as topics such as marriage, dating advice and women empowerment.

Her latest project includes teaming up with Hallmark to devote a whole episode to her man in celebration of their anniversary. Gabrielle confessed that she can’t always find the right words to express her love for the NBA star, but said a heartfelt card is her typical go-to.

“It gives you a chance to show people I see you.’ it gives you a chance to show people that you put in effort to go pick out a card, the perfect card,” she reflected.

Read: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra and 6 other whirlwind A-list engagements

Her ultimate mission for their anniversary is to make Wade cry the tear of all tears. As she put it, “The Glory tear… that’s my goal!” The Think Like a Man star also acknowledged that her husband is better at card giving than she is. (We feel you Union, too many options!)

In discussing Put It Into Words, Union said the show’s appeal is based on the idea of connection through thoughtfulness. She summarized, “Especially in this day in age, we’re very careless with our words. Especially via text or email or social media. And you’re very quick to anger, very quick to wound, very quick to be a lot more harsh than you ever would in person.”

However, Union has found a way to do just the opposite in her weekly Woman Crush Wednesday posts via her Instagram account, most recently featuring the iconic Janet Jackson.

She explained, “If I can’t use my social media to amplify, uplift, inspire one woman a week.. I can’t call myself a feminist. I can’t call myself an advocate for women.” Union believes that “women uplifting other women should be the norm,” and we truly couldn’t agree more!

  • 6 Major lessons Cardi B has learned about motherhood since giving birth

July has been a hectic and powerful month for Cardi B.

Not only does the “Bodak Yellow” rapper lead the MTV Video Music Award Nominations, but she also gave birth to her baby daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus on July 10, whose arrival she announced in a stunning Instagram photograph. Cardi’s journey into motherhood, however, hasn’t necessarily been all rainbows and butterflies for her and husband Offset.

Read: Cardi B is first female rapper to get two Billboard number ones

Cardi B is known for telling it like it is. After all, we know she’s a boss and makes bloody moves. And that’s why we love her. Now, the rap superstar is getting even more candid about motherhood and the tolls this new chapter is taking on her life and body. Aside from buying matching Lamborghinis with Offset, that is.

While sometimes it can seem like celebrities have picture-perfect lives, more and more new moms are opening up about their post-partum difficulties. Just look at Chrissy Teigen and her “mom bod.” The fact that celebs like Cardi are ripping down the curtain and promoting transparency about themselves is an inspiration for new moms. Here are some of her best lessons that moms can learn from the “Bartier Cardi” rapper.

    1. Getting real about the physical toll of giving birth to Kulture: In a July Instagram live video, Cardi said, “I met my match…She is very demanding, like I can’t believe I have a boss.” Later on, Cardi explains that she can’t ever leave daughter KK’s side. “I can’t leave my baby, not for one second,” she said. In the video, Cardi spills the truth on getting her body back and how the process is taking much longer than she expected. It’s not just healing Cardi is looking for—it’s repair: “I thought six weeks was gonna be long enough. No bro! My a— is broken…she broke me. She really broke me. She took all the strength from my body.”

The Bronx native tweets all the time about how much she loves Kulture, but her baby’s sleep schedule is messing with hers, too. “My baby don’t sleep night or day” she tweeted. Baby Kulture apparently gives her mama attitude, too.

    2. Being open and honest about her career realities: On July 26, Cardi announced in an Instagram note that she had to drop out of performing with Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic Tour this fall. “I think I underestimated this whole mommy thing,” she wrote. The note continued, “Not only am I just not ready physically, I’m not ready to leave my baby behind since the doctors told me it’s not healthy for her to be on the road.”

Mars didn’t let Cardi’s cancellation go unnoticed. Mars followed suite à la Instagram note and wrote, “You are absolutely doing the right thing…We love you Cardi and we will play “Bodak Yellow” every night in your honor.

Canceling the Brunco Mars tour doesn’t mean that she’s stopping work completely. She called out doubters in her Instagram video: “My life is not over, you know.” She repeated similar sentiments from an earlier interview before giving birth when some haters told Cardi her “career is over.” In typical Cardi fashion, she let them know her thoughts: “Why do I gotta choose a career or or a baby? Why can’t I have both? I want both.”

    Both she shall have.

    3. Changing up her manicure to something more baby-friendly: Cardi B and her nails go together like Ariana Grande and her ponytail. It’s her statement. Her MO. Her look. In one Instagram video in which Cardi thanks her mom and sister, she holds a tiny toy monkey that is nearly the same size as her nails.

Don’t expect Cardi to sacrifice this style just because of her newborn. Although she won’t give up her signature nails completely, some modifications are necessary. On Tuesday, Cardi tweeted, “Ok so if you noticed I changed my nail shape from pointy to square so i [sic] won’t hurt my baby.” But there might be an exception for one nail: “I’m thinking about only changing my pinky nail shape back to pointy so i can take my babies little boogers out.”

    4. Not letting those real mommy shamers bring her down: Cardi calls out those who have suggested she hire a nanny, and she really doesn’t want to. “It’s so hard because I wanna be with my baby every second. Even when I be doing my hair in the other room I just gotta be around her,” she said on Instagram.

Just like so many moms out there, Cardi has a full-time career. After she gave birth, one source told E! News, “She loves being a mom but also wants to make sure she has a legacy, and is a very hard worker.”

    5. Allowing privacy for herself and her baby: Cardi is a glamorous superstar, which we all know, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t suffer from bad hair days either. When MTV VMA nominations came out, the honoree posted a video talking about how thankful she was, but it was more like a ventriloquist act than a selfie. With the camera pointed at a doll—and her nails, of course—Cardi left no stone unturned while describing her current look: “I wish I could show my face right now but a btch look f—ked up. My hair’s f—ked up, my eyes are so dark and puffy, I’m wild pale.”

Neither Cardi nor Offset has posted a photo of Kulture, joining the ranks of fellow music superstar moms like Beyoncéwho has been known for holding off posting pictures of her children at first. We must note, too, that Cardi’s album title is called Invasion of Privacy. It sounds like she’s giving us a bit of a hint.

    6. Learning the power of patience: Cardi doesn’t hide her love for Offset. It’s actually pretty much the opposite of that. On Tuesday, Cardi tweeted a picture of her husband with the caption “Hey cowboy, I want to take a ride on your horse.”

Cardi is literally counting down the days until she and Offset can—ahem—ride off into the sunset together. “3 weeks and 4 days Yes b-tch I’m counting, wussup!” she replied to one Twitter user who told her she “probably still gonna finish healing first.”

For now, baby KK is enough for Cardi and Offset, but she isn’t ruling out more kids in the future. “Later on in life I’ll have more babies” she replied to a Twitter user who asked if she wanted a brother or sister for Kulture.

All we can say is that Cardi B as a mother, Cardi B as a record-breaking rapper: we like it like that.

  • We can’t prosecute CEOs/MDs of failed banks BoG

The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) can step in to investigate circumstances that led to the collapse of some banks in the country, Dr Benjamin Amoah, Head of Research Department of the BoG, has said.

According to him, the BoG has no prosecutorial powers to drag directors of those banks who engaged in illegalities to court.

The BoG, on Wednesday, 1 August 2018, announced the merger of five struggling local banks into a Consolidated Bank, since they cannot meet the minimum capital requirement of GHS400 million. The newly-established Consolidated Bank is fully owned by the Government of Ghana, with a start-up capital of GHS450 million.

The banks that have been merged are The Royal Bank, The BIEGE Bank, Sovereign Bank, Construction Bank and uniBank.

According to the BoG, The BEIGE, Sovereign and the Construction banks obtained their banking licences under false pretences through the use of suspicious and non-existent capital, whereas the Royal Bank had non-performing loans which constitute 78.9 per cent and uniBank which also had a capital of GHS7.4 billion compared to the regulatory minimum of GHS400 million.

Asked whether or not the BoG will institute legal action against the directors of the banks that obtained their licences under false pretences, Dr Amoah told Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM, on Thursday, 2 August 2018, that: “The BoG has no prosecutorial powers to arrest the directors and prosecute them.

“It is the EOCO and other state investigative bodies that have the powers to prosecute, and, so, they can come in, and, if they need the BoG to assist in the investigations, we will do that.”

Touching on whether or not workers of these banks are going to lose their jobs under the management of the now Consolidated Bank, Dr Amoah told show host Chief Jerry Forson that: “Workers are not going to lose their jobs under the Consolidated Bank. I’ll urge all workers to move in to their various branches or offices to do their normal work.”

  • Former school feeding caterers to be paid soon Coordinator

The National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Program, Dr. Kwame Adu-Nsiah, has assured that all former caterers under the programme who are owed arrears by the previous government will be settled soon.

Last week, the caterers held a press conference in the Ashanti Region to relay their concerns where they renewed appeals for a quick settlement of feeding grants owed them.

Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Adu-Nsiah asked the caterers to exercise restraint as his outfit works to bring them relief.

Read: W/R: School feeding items stolen

“During the transition period, they handed over certain documents to us, but unfortunately, there was no financial provision for them[caterers]. During 2017, auditors were sent to our end for validation, after the auditing, the details were sent to the Minister of Finance for them to give the money so that we can pay the caterers. It is not the fault of current management of the school feeding,” he said.

    Protests from caterers

The basic idea of the school feeding programme has been to provide pupils in primary public schools with one hot nutritious meal every day.

It has however been battling with some challenges as far as funding is concerned.

In May, scores of caterers under the school feeding programme besieged the premises of the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, demanding the payment of their arrears.

Some of the caterers said they had not been paid for more than eight months.

At the time, the National School Feeding Secretariat said it would pay the debt by the end of May.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme has been ongoing since 2005, under the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme Pillar III, in response to the first and second Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and achieving the universal primary education.

Last year, the programme released GHc 21 million to cater for part of the debt it owes caterers.

The money was supposed to cover the first seven days of the first term of the 2016/2017 academic year.

  • Thieves snatch Swedish royal jewels in daylight heist

Robbers who nabbed two 17th century royal crowns and an orb from a Swedish cathedral remained at large on Wednesday, a day after fleeing their daring midday heist by motorboat.

The thieves, who have not been identified, and the jewels are being sought internationally via Interpol, Swedish police spokesman Stefan Dangardt said, noting the objects were a “national treasure” and would likely be “very difficult to sell”.

The 1611 gold burial crowns belonging to King Karl IX and his wife Queen Christina were originally interred with the couple but were later exhumed and had been on display in a locked cabinet in Strangnas Cathedral, located 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Stockholm.

King Karl IX’s crown is made of gold and features crystals and pearls, while Christina’s is smaller and made of gold, precious stones and pearls.

“We have as yet no value of the stolen goods, except that it is a national treasure,” Dangardt told AFP.

“Several people were seen leaving the church by boat or waterscooter after the theft. We have spoken to witnesses, but we are interested in further information from anyone that has made any observations,” he said.

Tom Rowsell, who was having lunch outside the cathedral where he is to be married this weekend, told daily Aftonbladet he saw two men dash from the building toward a motorboat waiting on Lake Malaren.

“I saw a white little boat with an outboard motor on the back. The two men hurriedly jumped on board and it sped off,” he said.

“I knew immediately they were burglars, because of the way they were behaving,” he added.

    – ‘Not possible to sell’-

The theft occurred just before noon on Tuesday, and police quickly had helicopters, patrols, and search dogs looking for the thieves but their efforts have so far proved fruitless, Dangardt said.

“There is of course going to be a lot of media interest in these types of objects. There will be pictures in the media. It’s just not possible to sell these kinds of objects,” the national police coordinator for thefts of cultural artefacts, Maria Ellior, told news agency TT.

“So we can only speculate about (the thieves) intentions,” she added.

    Similar heists have occurred before.

In 2013, King Johan III’s burial regalia was stolen from Vasteras Cathedral. It was recovered several days later in a garbage bag left on a a countryside road, following an anonymous tip.

“One can hope that something like that will happen in this case,” Ellior said.

The perpetrators of Tuesday’s heist risk up to six years in prison for aggravated theft.
