  • LeBron James opens school for underprivileged children

NBA superstar LeBron James has proved he’s a role model both on and off the basketball court by opening a school for underprivileged children.

The I Promise School will house 240 at-risk third and fourth-grade students in James’ hometown Akron, Ohio.

The school is a joint venture between the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron Public Schools.

“We just want everything for them,” the three-time NBA champion said. “Everything and more. So it’s going to mean a lot to me.”

James will serve as primary donor to help form the extra-curricular goals of the school. The school’s board will oversee the curriculum development.

The 33-year-old, who recently moved from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers on a four-year contract worth $154m (£116m), hopes the school will help kids who are falling behind in education and struggling at home.

The former Cavs star missed 83 days of school in the fourth grade because his family did not have a car.

Several other families offered care and support, and the following year he started playing basketball.

“School didn’t mean anything to me,” he said. “There were just a lot of empty days, empty nights and just kind of a no-future thought process.

“It was mentally challenging. No kid at eight, nine should have that stress… so I know exactly what a lot of these kids are going through.”

James says having a bike was a huge factor in his childhood as it offered him an escape from dangerous parts of his neighbourhood and the freedom to explore. Because of that, every student will receive a bicycle when they arrive at the school.

Students will also be provided with meals during the day, as well as services to help them deal with stress, or parents who are struggling to make ends meet.

The school will also provide services to families, which include job placement assistance for parents and an on-site food bank from which parents can take food to prepare at home.

“We want to create an environment of family where you want to always be around your family,” said James. “No matter the good and the bad, you always want to be around that support system.

“By using my voice and letting the youth know and the people that need the guidance know that I care for them and I’m going to be their voice, it’s passionate for me, because like I said, sports is just the ultimate to bring people together, so that’s what I’m here for.”

In 2015, James announced an initiative that would pay for more than 1,000 kids to attend college.

He has also funded the ‘Wheels for Education’ programme, which started in 2011 and provides kids with school supplies, access to computers, and a bike as part of a system designed to keep kids motivated to complete their homework and get good grades.

  • Man Utd 2-1 Real Madrid – Jose Mourinho unsure when Anthony Martial will return

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said he “doesn’t know” when forward Anthony Martial will link up with the squad after his side beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the International Champions Cup.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera earned United a first 90-minute win of their United States trip, but they had to do without Martial in Miami after he left the tour last week to attend the birth of his daughter.

Mourinho questioned why the French international did not return for Saturday’s 4-1 defeat by Liverpool.

Read: Jose Mourinho frustrated by Manchester United injuries, lack of signings

Asked if Martial would be part of his squad for Sunday’s game against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena – five days before the start of the Premier League season – he said: “I don’t know.”

Martial has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and it is understood the club would be willing to let him leave for a team outside the Premier League.

Mourinho did confirm attackers Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku and defender Phil Jones had volunteered to return to training three days early in a bid to ensure they are fully fit for the Premier League opener against Leicester on 9 August.

Chilean forward Sanchez impressed against Real in the final match of United’s five-game trip, scoring United’s first and creating the second when he nodded Juan Mata’s cross into the path of Herrera, who finished with a first-time shot.

Summer signing Fred started in midfield, while goalkeeper David de Gea returned in goal.

Gareth Bale started for Real but his only chance of note was a curling shot that went wide.

Karim Benzema, the single player who began the Champions League final win over Liverpool to start in Miami, pulled one back in first-half stoppage time.

Man Utd: De Gea; Darmian, Bailly, Fosu-Mensah, Shaw; Herrera, Fred (Tuanzebe 68), McTominay (Mitchell 79); Mata (Garner 82), Alexis, A Pereira.

Subs not used: Grant, J Pereira, Williams, Hamilton, Gomes, Chong, Bohui, Greenwood.

Real Madrid: Casilla (Lunin 46); Odriozola (Sergio Lopez 62), Vallejo (Nacho 77), Sanchez, Hernandez (Reguilón 46); Llorente (Asensio 77), Valverde (Isco 77); Bale (Odegaard 46, Kroos 77), Ceballos (Raul de Thomas 62), Vinicius Junior (Oscar Rodriguez 62); Benzema (Mayoral 46).

  • Stop luxury car tax Car dealer

The Akufo-Addo government must withdraw the luxury car tax it recently imposed on vehicles with an engine capacity of 3.0 and more, Mr Francis Owusu, CEO of Bestman Motors, has said.

According to him, the luxury car tax is a disincentive for people to buy cars, a situation, he said, will affect the business of car importers.

Implementation of the tax started on Wednesday, 1 August 2018 as announced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Read: Luxury Vehicle Tax kicks in today

An annual levy will be imposed on vehicles with high engine capacity of 2950 cubic centimeters and more.

    The levy is as follows:

    2950cc 3549cc GH¢1,000

    3550cc 4049cc GH¢1,500

    Above 4049cc GH¢2,000

The GRA, in a statement, said the levy shall be paid on the registration of vehicles and subsequently on or before the annual renewal of the roadworthy certificate of such vehicles, with engine capacities as listed above.

The levy is also imposed on vehicles existing prior to the passage of the law with the above listed cubic centimeters.

Vehicles whose road worthiness certificates have already been renewed prior to the passage of this law in 2018, will pay the levy starting from their next renewal date in 2019.

Read: Government to raise GH¢300m from tax on luxury vehicles

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, Mr Owusu said: “The introduction of this tax is disappointing because firstly, car dealers were not informed before the introduction.

“Secondly, people are now going to decide not to patronise luxury cars because they cannot afford to pay the tax. That means we are being taken out of jobs and that is sad.

“This is not what we were promised, the president promised he was going to introduce policies that will help businesses but that is not what we are seeing now.”

He added: “We know President Akufo-Addo is a listening president, and, so, he will listen to our cry; we plead with him to hold on with the implementation of the tax.”

He will be on interdiction and after we have concluded our investigation and there is the need for an administrative action to be taken against him, that will be done.”

DSP Ebenezer Tetteh however said the police will join the family of the late driver as they mark the one-week anniversary of his passing.

    How the death occured

DSP Ebenezer Tetteh in an earlier interview said, “A group of mourners who were on their way to the cemetery to bury their loved one [had gathered on the street]…They had blocked the road, and there was traffic on the road the bullion van was using to its destination. So the policeman came out and in an attempt to open up the road to help the bullion van come out of the traffic, because of the safety of the money on board, he accidentally fired, and the bullet hit the bullion van driver who died on the spot.”

The officer was kept in police custody after the incident occurred.

  • Andre Ayew makes big impression in his first Fenerbahce training

Ghana winger Andre Ayew made a big impact on his first day of training with Turkish giants Fenerbahce as he won over the staff supervising him.

With most of the players given a break over their pre-season friendly matches, Ayew hit the ground running on Saturday morning – less than 24 hours after joining the club.

Ayew joined two other players of Fenerbahce – Ferdi Kadioglu and Serhat Kot – as they took part in the training held under the supervision of coach Phillip Cocu.

The two-fit again players joined Ayew on their first day of return from injury as they underwent fitness and endurance training at Fenerbahce’s Can Bartu training facility.

The Ghana midfielder Ayew signed a season-long loan with the Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahce from Swansea City on Friday.

The 28-year-old, who joined West Ham United in a record transfer fee of £20.5 million from Swansea in 2016, suffered a hamstring injury on his debut game against Chelsea.

He later returned to the Welsh side after falling down the pecking order in David Moyes’ setup.

However, his move to Turkey has been greeted by many as a big move for the deputy Black Stars captain to revive his career.

  • Relieving tax burden with pension contributions

The recent announcement by the Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori Atta, about the proposed tax changes has sent shivers down the spines of many Ghanaians.

The minister, in his mid-year budget review presentation to Parliament, proposed additional 35 per cent band to be included in the graduated Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system to essentially increase the tax burden on individuals earning more than GH¢10,000. The proposal, though yet to be approved by Parliament, has left many Ghanaians talking.

As noted by the minister, one major challenge that the country continues to face is low domestic revenue mobilisation and to address this, he proposed an additional tax band to increase the tax obligations of high-income earners in Ghana as one of the numerous measures to be deployed to tackle revenue shortfalls.

Although a progressive-income tax assessment appears laudable, the populace must be sensitised to understand the reasons for this approach, in particular, why there is the need for more taxes to be paid on their higher earnings.

    Taxes

Paying taxes in itself is obviously not something people, since the days of Matthew in the Bible, feel encouraged to do, or talk less of having to pay extra on your high earnings. To encourage people to honour their tax obligations and more importantly, have the urge to pay more, it is always important to introduce incentives aimed at achieving that objective, particularly, where such incentives achieve a social goal. It is for this reason that the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766) as amended, expressly exempts pension contributions from taxation in view of the need to have adequate income security during retirement to alleviate old-age poverty.

Section 3 of Act 766 provides for 18.5 per cent of the basic salary of a worker to be mandatorily set aside to provide pension income for the worker when they retire from active work. Additionally, a worker may voluntarily contribute up to 16.5 per cent of their income into a registered Provident Fund (PF) or a Personal Pension Scheme to supplement retirement income.

These contributions by, and on behalf of the worker, qualify for tax reliefs for the worker or his/her employer to the extent of the contribution made by either the employer or the worker. The tax relief on pension contribution can substantially reduce the tax burden of a worker and, therefore, Ghanaians should take advantage of the provisions of Act 766 and contribute more towards their retirement.

    Current arrangements

Under the current tax arrangements, a worker earning say GH¢20,000 as basic salary and GH¢10,000 as allowance can make extra tax savings of GH¢1,237.50 (representing 25 per cent of GH¢4,950 contribution to a PF) if he makes an additional voluntary contribution of 16.5 per cent of his/her income alone to a registered PF.

Extending this to the new proposal by the Finance Minister means extra tax saving of GH¢1,732.50 (representing 35per cent of the GH¢4,950 contribution to the PF) can be made by this worker when the proposal is approved by Parliament.

On the basis of the above illustration, it is of prudential benefit to workers earning in excess of GH¢10,000 to take the relevant steps to identify a registered PF and make the necessary pension contributions.

  • More than 1,500 people died trying to reach Europe in 2018 – UN

More than 1,500 people have died so far in 2018 trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean, the UN International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said, adding that this is the fifth consecutive year that the grim benchmark has been reached.

The vast majority of the 1,504 deaths were drownings that occurred as people tried to cross from Libya to Italy (1,111), according to the data collected for the Missing Migrants Project.

This was followed by 304 deaths on the route to Spain and 89 on the way to Greece.

Read: Zimbabwe election: Mnangagwa and Chamisa both upbeat

In a statement on Friday, the IOM said 304 fatalities were recorded between January and July 25, “far outpacing the 124 recorded in the equivalent period of 2017 – and the 224 recorded as drowned or missing during all of last year”.

The number of people who have arrived in Europe this year is 55,001, a decrease of 50 percent compared with the same period last year.

However, on a per capita basis, 2018 is one of the deadliest years yet because the number of people trying to reach Europe is significantly lower.

    Spain more popular

The IOM said that in recent months there was a big increase in the number of people trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Spain instead of Italy.

“Arrivals to Italy trail Spain by almost 3,000; a week ago the gap was less than 200,” the statement said.

“Additionally, 3,125 migrants have attempted to enter Spain irregularly via the country’s African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta, according to Spanish authorities,” it added.

“With this month’s figures, Spain is the Mediterranean’s most-sought destination for irregular migrants travelling by sea, surpassing Italy and Greece.”

Greece, which was the main destination for many people before the European Union struck a deal with Turkey which halted the number of refugee arrivals, has seen a 50 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

In total, more than 5,000 people have arrived in Greece so far this year.

Italy on the other hand, has seen a dramatic drop in the number of migrants arriving.

More than 640,000 people have reached Italy by boat from Africa in the past five years.

    Divided EU

In recent months, Italy’s new populist government has turned away several rescue vessels patrolling the Mediterranean to save refugees crossing the sea from drowning.

Since taking up his post in early June, Italy’s far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who is also one of the country’s two deputy prime ministers, has pushed the divisive issue of migration to the forefront of the EU agenda by refusing to open his country’s ports to migrant rescue ships.

Under the European Union’s so-called “Dublin rules”, asylum seekers must be processed in the country where they first arrive – usually Italy, Greece or Spain.

In an attempt to reduce the number of refugees trying to reach Europe, the leaders of Italy and France have urged the EU to set up asylum processing centres in Africa to prevent refugees and migrants from undertaking the journey across the Mediterranean, a move widely criticised because of the often dire circumstances in those countries.

  • New AMERI deal ‘betrayal; stinks to high heavens’ Bentil

The renegotiated agreement between AMERI Energy and the Akufo-Addo-led government stinks, Kofi Bentil, private legal practitioner and Vice-President of Imani Africa, has said.

According to him, the new deal has stabbed critics of the initial deal negotiated by the Mahama administration, including himself and others such as CEO of mPedigree, Bright Simons, in the back.

He wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday, 31 July that: “This AMERI deal stinks to the high heavens and is a betrayal of all who fought against the first one.”

Read: Akufo-Addo approves new AMERI deal

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently approved the new deal pending parliamentary approval.

A statement signed by Secretary to the president, Nana Asante Bediatuo, dated 25 July 2018, stated that: “The President of the Republic of Ghana has granted executive approval for the Novation and Amendment Agreement dated July 20, 2018 between (i) the Government of the Republic of Ghana represented by the Minister of Energy (or his authorised representative), (ii) Volta River Authority (VRA), (iii) Africa and Middle East Resource Investment Group (AMERI ENERGY), (iv) Ameri Energy Power Equipment Trading LLC (AMERI EQUIPMENT), (v) Power Projects Sanayi Insaat Ticanet Limited Sirketi (PPR), and (vi) Mytilineos International Trading Company AG (Mytilineos), for operations and maintenance of the existing 250MW AMERI Thermal Plant at Aboadzi, for a period of 15 years.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration recently began taking steps to amend portions of the controversial $510 million deal signed by the John Mahama administration.

The current government believes that there was no value-for-money in the deal signed by the NDC administration, hence the renegotiations.

The renegotiated deal is expected to be approved by parliament when the House resumes from recess.

Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said before parliament rose last week, that the House needs to “interrogate the figures to know that what we are doing is in the best interest of the country, which explains why [the debate on the deal has been delayed].”

The government, on Wednesday, 25 July, laid a paper before parliament for the amendment process to start.

It was referred to the Joint Committee on Finance and Mines and Energy for consideration and report by the First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu.

  • Liverpool ‘one or two players from winning Premier League’ – Charlie Adam

Liverpool are “one or two players” short of having a team capable of winning the Premier League, says former Reds midfielder Charlie Adam.

Jurgen Klopp’s side finished fourth in England’s top flight last season and have spent nearly £170m this summer.

They also paid £75m for centre-back Virgil van Dijk in January, but Adam says they need another defender to challenge champions Manchester City.

“Liverpool have done excellent business so far,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

Guinea midfielder Naby Keita has arrived from RB Leipzig for about £50m, Brazil midfielder Fabinho has joined from Monaco in a deal that could be worth more than £40m, and Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri has come in for £13m.

Read: Liverpool manager Klopp aware of trophies pressure

Liverpool have also made Alisson the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, recruiting the Brazilian from Roma in a deal the Italian club said is worth up to £66.8m.

However, the Reds have also raised significant funds, including through the £142m sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January.

“Liverpool are one or two players from the title,” said Adam on The Monday Night Club. “He [Klopp] has added quality to the squad, I still think they could do with another centre-half.

“They have brought Shaqiri in, a good replacement if Mohamed Salah needs a rest. Daniel Sturridge is to come back in – if he stays fit he could be in that team as well.

“The goalkeeper situation was a big problem for them last season. He has seen that problem and got that deal done,” he said.

He [Alisson] is going to be worth six to eight points over the season. It adds a total belief and confidence.”

‘Shaqiri may get frustrated on the bench’

Shaqiri has arrived at Anfield from Adam’s current club Stoke, and the Scot described the deal as “a great move” for both the Switzerland international and for Liverpool.

However, Adam – who spent the 2011-12 season with the Reds – has warned that the 26-year-old may get frustrated if he finds game time hard to come by under Klopp.

“He’s got to try and replace Salah, the best player in the Premier League and has a chance for the Ballon d’Or,” said the 32-year-old.

“It’s only going to last six months and he won’t be happy sitting on bench. He’ll want to play in the bigger games.

“He might get frustrated at not playing as much as he wants – it’s how long he waits and what Klopp does with him.

“He will fit in at Liverpool, he’s a top player. He deserves to be there.”

Adam and Shaqiri were part of the Potters side relegated from the Premier League last season, and the midfielder feels the Swiss could have done more to aid the team’s fight against the drop.

“He’s a big player, at times he did well for us,” he added.

“But in critical situations, I felt tracking back and what we needed for the team in a relegation battle just wasn’t there.

“He has got it in him, but he probably knew we were going to get relegated, he was going to the World Cup and had this big move – this move was probably done three, four months ago.

“He is a match-winner, but at times it was difficult to play in the same team. The manager would let him get away with certain things. We fell short, it’s not just him, there are others.”

‘We were told to be water carriers for Shaqiri’

Adam also said that former Stoke boss Paul Lambert suggested Shaqiri’s team-mates were “water carriers” for the midfielder.

“He was the world-class player that we had in our team. Basically, we had to get him the ball to go and make something happen, which was difficult to take.

“We knew he was a match-winner, but we felt we should have had more respect from that point of view.

“When you have players that knew they were going to get a move whether they were relegated or not, it was inevitable what was going to happen.

“He felt Shaq was one who would keep us up – but we had others in teams who could win games.”
