He then proceeds by naming the people he would want to receive donations from and how much he would want each of them to pay him.

Kwame Despite, Dr Kwame Kyei, Adonko Bitters, Kennedy Agyapong and a host of other businessmen in the country, he said are the kinds of people he would want them to donate to him after he has been beaten. He wants each of them to donate an amount of GHC 10,000 (100 MILLION) to him.

“I will buy Kumasi Airport, Baba Yara Sports Stadium, and plots of land…,” he says.

  • Cedi depreciates by 5.83% in July BoG

Latest data from the Bank of Ghana dubbed the Summary of Economic and Financial Data has shown that the cedi depreciated by 5.83% by July this year compared to the same period last year.

The cedi until recently saw a sharp depreciation against the dollar, creating some uncertainty among business associations, calling for the free fall to be halted.

The Bank of Ghana attributed the situation to global trends which it said affected different economies across the world due to an increase in the Feds rate in the U.S.

According to the report, the cedi depreciated by 5.83% for the year on year bases between July 2017 and July 2018.

As a result, the cedi which was trading at 4 cedis, 37 pesewas against the major trading currency the dollar in July 2017 had hit 4 cedis, 69 pesewas by July this year.

Also, the cedi recorded a 2.0% depreciation against the British pound for July 2017 and July 2018.

By July this year the British pound was trading at 6 cedis, 8 pesewas compared to 5 cedis 76 pesewas in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the cedi depreciated by 2.6 percent against the Euro between July 2017 and July 2018 on year on year basis.

As at today,(24th July,2018), the pound is trading at 6 cedis 15 pesewas while the Euro is trading at 5 cedis 49 pesewas.

The dollar is also at 4 cedis, 69 pesewas at the interbank rate.

The Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta had stated in his mid-year budget presentation to parliament that the cedi only depreciated by 0.2 percent for the first half of the year compared to 2.0 in 2017.

According to him, the Nana Addo led administration has performed well in stabilizing the local currency.

“The Ghana cedi remained relatively stable both on the interbank and the forex bureau market largely due to improved macro-economic conditions. The interbank market, cumulatively, the cedi has appreciated by 0.2 percent against the U.S dollar during the first five months” he said.

Business operators have constantly complained for the past two months over the constant depreciation of the cedi.

But Mr. Ofori Atta believes the cedi has not seen a huge depreciation this year and as such should not be a problem to Ghanaians.

Meanwhile the minister insists that the cedi has actually performed well in the last 18 months as compared with the performance in the past 6 years.

“There has been volatilities and this was mostly due to external circumstances and speculations. The bank of Ghana has made appropriate interventions and we are confident that the cedi will be stable through the year” he assured.

  • Illicit importation of edible oil killing local industry – OPDAG

The President of the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG), Mr Samuel Avaala, has made a passionate call for the local oil palm industry to be protected.

He said local producers have more than sufficient capacity to refine and bottling crude palm oil to meet local demand.

Mr Avaala, therefore, kicked against the continued importation of finished vegetable oil into the country especially when the imports come in through unapproved routes.

The illicit importation of vegetable oil he said robs the government of tax revenues.

Speaking on behalf of local producers, Mr Avaala stated, “We have more than sufficient capacity to refine and bottle, package locally-produced vegetable oil for consumption and in so doing contribute to the sustenance and economic viability of smallholder farmers in particular and the entire value chain in general.”

  • Tape reveals Trump and lawyer discussing payoff over alleged affair

A recording of a conversation in which President Donald Trump and his lawyer discuss a payoff over an alleged affair with a model has been broadcast by CNN.

Mr Trump and Michael Cohen discuss buying the rights to former Playboy model Karen McDougal’s story.

The audiotape was recorded in September 2016, two months before the election. The affair allegedly dates to 2006.

Mr Trump’s current lawyer Rudy Giuliani says no money was paid, and the tape does not show evidence of any crime.

The tape was one of a number reportedly discovered during an FBI raid on Mr Cohen’s property earlier this year in New York.

    What’s on the tape?

The conversation jumps around, there are other voices and some of the audio is muffled.

Mr Trump and Mr Cohen, who no longer works for the president, appear to be discussing buying the rights to Ms McDougal’s story from the parent company of the National Enquirer. The former Playboy model had sold her story to the Enquirer in the run-up to the election.

Mr Cohen says: “I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend, David.”

    Who is Michael Cohen?

This could be a reference to Mr Trump’s friend, David Pecker, president of American Media Inc, the National Enquirer’s parent company.

Mr Trump says later: “So, what do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?”

Ms McDougal reportedly received $150,000 (£115,000) from the Enquirer for her story.

Mr Cohen once famously vowed he would take a bullet for the president
Mr Cohen starts to mention financing and Mr Trump asks: “What financing?”

Mr Cohen says: “We’ll have to pay”.

The next section is pivotal. Mr Trump is heard saying “pay with cash” but it is not clear if he is suggesting to do so or not do so. Mr Cohen’s response is clear: “No, no, no”.

Mr Trump is then heard saying “cheque”.

    What does it all mean?

The Department of Justice is looking into alleged hush money paid to women who claim they had a relationship with Mr Trump.

It is a potential problem for Mr Trump because undisclosed payments to bury embarrassing stories about a political candidate can be treated as a violation of US campaign finance laws.

Donald Trump has denied having an affair with Ms McDougal
At the very least, the tape shows Mr Trump was aware that discussions were taking place to buy the rights to Ms McDougal’s story.

When previously questioned about Ms McDougal, President Trump had denied the affair and said he had no knowledge of any payment.

Mr Giuliani told Associated Press news agency that he had had the tape enhanced and it clearly shows the president saying “don’t pay with cash”.

He told AP: “The president wanted to do it the right way. If you wanted to hide something, you would not do it by corporation or cheque,” he said.

Mr Giuliani said no payment was made in the end although he did not know why that was the case.

    Who is Karen McDougal?

A former Playboy model who says she had a 10-month relationship with Mr Trump starting in 2006. He was already then married to Melania and was the host of TV show The Apprentice.

She sold her story to the National Enquirer, signing a $150,000 agreement that gave the tabloid exclusive story rights and banned her from talking publicly about the alleged affair.

The Enquirer did not publish her kiss-and-tell, and she says she was tricked.

Mr Trump has denied any affair took place. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said this week “the president maintains he’s done nothing wrong”.

    What about Michael Cohen?

A former Trump stalwart, Mr Cohen once famously vowed he would take a bullet for the president.

But things changed after the FBI raided his office and home in April.

About a dozen audio recordings were seized and passed to federal prosecutors. Mr Giuliani said Mr Cohen had recorded the McDougal conversation at Trump Tower in New York using a hidden device.

Mr Cohen told ABC News this month that his loyalty to his family and country came before his old boss.

His comments stoked speculation that he might co-operate with investigators against Mr Trump, although there has been no confirmation so far that he has done so.

Mr Cohen is reportedly under investigation for possible bank and tax fraud, as well as potential violation of election law.

This relates to another woman who claims an affair with Mr Trump, Stormy Daniels, also in 2006.

In May, President Trump admitted he had reimbursed Mr Cohen for a payment he made to hush up her claims.

Mr Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the $130,000 payment as part of a non-disclosure agreement.

Mr Cohen has not yet been charged with anything.

  • Southern men luring our women with money Kpikpira chief

Elders of Kpikpira in the Tempane District of the Northern Region are accusing men in southern Ghana of luring women from the north with money to leave their husbands and marry them.

A spokesperson for the Kpikpira elders, Ali Yaro, has alleged that when women from the area travel to the south to raise money and return home to their husbands, the men come down and lure them with money to stay.

He says, as a result, lots of men up north remain, bachelors, because the women they had hoped to marry have chosen to stay with relatively richer men in Accra, Kumasi and other southern cities of the country.

He was speaking with a team from World Vision who called on the chiefs and elders as part of a tour of World Vision projects at Tempane and other districts in the north.

Ali Yaro noted that because there are no jobs, resulting to the high poverty rate up north, the women, including married ones, travel to the south in search of greener pastures, and that is how they get trapped by the men in the cities.

“The poverty level here is very high during the dry season because our lands are not fertile enough so both men and women travel to the cities to look for other alternatives for survival, and some end up doing galamsey.

“When our women go because they are new and desperate for jobs to make money they accept offers from men who promise to give them money and we the men up north suffer for it,” he lamented.

Ali Yaro is therefore happy about the intervention by World Vision, such as the installation of shea-butter machines which is boosting the Shea-butter business and addressing the poverty issue.

He is, therefore, calling on all the citizens of the area who have travelled to the south to return home and join the lucrative Shea-butter business and help to develop their communities.

  • Africa Youth Games Hockey: South Africa end Ghanas dream

South Africa denied Ghana U-17 female hockey team the opportunity to participate in the Argentina Youth Olympics Games with a 5-2 victory in their fourth game played in Algeria on Monday July 23

The Ghanaians lost their second match 2-3 to Namibia and therefore needed a win against South Africa to book a place in the grand finale but failed to glitter against their bogey side when it mattered most.

It was South Africa who opened the scores early in the fifth minute when Angel Nkosi slotted home a field goal, before Ghana reacted quickly to cancel the lead through Rebecca Donkor.

Three minutes later, South Africa increased the tally through Du Toit Jean-Leah, and continued to pile pressure on Ghana with the quest of unsettling them.

Their effort paid off in the 11th minute when Angela Welham, who scored a brace in the game, capitalised on a defensive blunder to add her name on the score sheet with a brilliant goal.

Undaunted by the display of talent by South Africa, the Ghanaians redoubled their effort with quick passes and long shots and succeeded in reducing the tally through top striker, Asana Gbatti, who has been on the score sheet in all four matches played.

Moments after the goal, however, the South Africans massed up in the Ghana goal area and scored two quick goals through Angela Welham in the 17th minute and Ramasimong Mathapelo a minute later to deny Ghana the privilege to participate in the October Youth Olympics Games in Argentina .

South Africa, who have won three matches so far, will now play Namibia in the grand finale.

In their fourth game against host nation Algeria on Monday, Namibia won by a cricket score of 13-1, with Zimbabwe defeating Nigeria 4-0.

Today, the national U-17 team will play against Nigeria in the last of the group matches. Notwithstanding the outcome of the match, they will play in the third and fourth place match hoping to win a bronze medal to compensate for the gold medal they missed.

  • Meghan Markle’s Half-Sister Addresses Concerns She’s “Cashing In” on the Duchess’ Fame

If you want to say Samantha Markle is “cashing in” on her half-sister Meghan Markle’s fame, so be it.

The older sibling of the new Duchess of Sussex addressed mounting claims that she has financially benefitted from her connection to the royal in a new Monday interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

“I worked in media most of my life and in broadcasting, so because my sister is suddenly royal isn’t grounds for me to stop doing all of that,” she said on the morning program. “Let’s face it—we all have to survive. Money makes the world go round, so if you want to call that cashing in, that’s fine, but I think no one in media would refuse a paycheck for talking about the royal and, as a family, we’re not subject to royal protocol.”

As she continued, “Why would I stop living because we have a family issue going on?”

Markle continued her debate on the topic, telling co-hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Kate Garraway that Meghan’s public profile as a member of the royal family makes her a subject of discussion within the media.

“The media makes billions of dollars off of social issues and talking about the royals, so I don’t see how were any different,” she argued. “No one has a copyright on our life experiences and so, I think the public forgets that within the family, we’re each individuals with our own life experiences. With all due respect, its not just Meghan. We’re entitled to share that. We’re entitled to be open about it and if we can shed some light on some issues for the public, then great and we can enjoy the process. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It’s not disparaging. It’s not harmful.”

As Samantha concluded, “For someone to say, ‘Oh you shouldn’t take any money. You should turn down a paycheck,’ well go tell your boss you don’t want a paycheck for interviewing me because that’s cashing in.”

Ignoring Their Dad: “Enough Is Enough”

The co-hosts then wondered if all of her remarks meant Samantha will be appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. “I would tell you, but then I would have to kill you,” she answered with a laugh.

The sibling was appearing on the show in an effort to bridge the gap between Meghan and her father, Thomas Markle, whom Samantha claims has not spoken to Meghan in months. Last week, Thomas gave an interview to The Sun in which he said he thought his daughter looked “terrified” during public engagements. Samantha said they’ve resorted to public channels of communication with the royal since “private channels have been exhausted to no avail.”

“They were texting for a while, but all of that ceased and so I think he is very worried. He feels very isolated as you can imagine any father would,” she told the co-hosts.

“The concern is he really can’t calibrate how she is emotionally, her well-being and he truly is worried,” Samantha elaborated. “He just needs to know that she’s well, she’s happy, she’s ok and to touch bases, so I hope they get to do that soon.”

“He is 74 years old and we all know that life is short,” she said. “Given the circumstances over the last several months since the wedding, I think he really just wants to embrace her and have some closure on the distance and the misperception and really let her know that he loves her and I feel that he deserves that in return.”

  • Dont be fooled, buy lands during rainy season GNFS official

The National Director of Investigations of the Ghana National Fire Service has called on property owners, real estate developers and all Ghanaians to try as much as possible to purchase lands during rainy seasons.

According to Deputy Chief Fire Officer Patrick Donkor, acquiring lands during rainy seasons is the only time prospective buyers can make informed decisions about the property they want to acquire.

Mr. Donkor gave the advice after visiting Oyoko, Aberewa Nkwanta, Bohy3, Zongo and Nkubem all flood-prone areas in the New Juaben Municipality as part of a working visit to access activities in flood-prone areas in the region.

Read: Flash floods wreak havoc in Kumasi

“I will advice that Ghanaians buy land only during rainy seasons because if you look at how people build on waterways, blocking the course of the water and even purchasing low lying areas for their projects I simply cannot understand. I do ask myself if they are sometimes misled into believing those lands are good lands during dry seasons or what”.

” We do this and create problems for ourselves after spending huge sums of money to develop the sites, so I am pleading that we buy lands during rainy seasons so when we go with agents and owners to the sites during the rainy season we turn to get a fair idea of the danger and risks we are inviting for ourselves should we buy low lying areas and swamps”.

The Ghana National Fire Service Command has dispatched a high powered delegation comprising of senior officers around the country to ascertain and furnish the service with first-hand information on flooding situation in the country.

This is part of moves to mitigate the effects of perennial flooding disasters recorded in the country to help save lives and properties.

In an interview with Citi News after touring some flood-prone areas in the New Juaben Municipality, the Director of Investigations of the Ghana Fire Service Deputy Chief Fire Officer Patrick Donkor said their reports after the tour will help the command and other stakeholders take informed decisions going forward.

“Authorities at the fire command are very much concerned about the rate of flooding cases recorded yearly in this country, we have studied and known perfectly that the floods affect us, our homes, properties and finances so we are trying to find a way of mitigating such disasters during the rainy seasons”.

“So we have been sent across the entire country to identify the common problems contributing to the floods so we find lasting solutions to it and also prompt other stakeholders to up their game to save lives and properties and this will be based on the reports we will send back to the headquarters”.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Patrick Donkor who was not happy about construction works and projects built on waterways advised the public to desist from changing the course of rivers.

“The major problem is reclamation of lands, during the rounds we saw that a number of people are constructing on waterways, changing courses of rivers and in some cases blocking the flow and this practice is not a healthy one. The most shocking of it is how some churches are involved in this same attitude, now you find churches who are supposed to also be propagating good information to the public and congregation not to acquire or put up property in certain areas are rather deeply rooted in buying low area plots.”

“I am therefore taking this opportunity to tell leaders of the churches to desist from acquiring lands in flood prone areas to avoid changing the course of rivers to help our work”.

The Accra East Region of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has assured residents of Adabraka and Asylum down in Accra that their taps will flow by close of Tuesday.

Residents in these areas have not had water running through their taps in the last 3 weeks.

The situation is a concern for the residents as school children and women are compelled to walk long distances with gallons in search of water.

But Engineer Emmanuel Johnson told Citi News brisk work is ongoing to rectify the problem.

“We are at the back of Paloma Hotel, what we are doing is we are tracing a suspected blockage through our 16 inches pipeline which is connected to Adabraka and some parts of Asylum Down, but what is hampering our efforts is the property which has been built on the pipeline, the pressure built up here is low, but we are very sensitive to their plight, I can also assure them that by close of today,” he stated.

The situation affected hundreds of residents; many of whom resorted to the use of water drawn from wells and sachet water for domestic purposes.

The Minority in Parliament have accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of making moves to influence the 2020 presidential and parliamentary polls in their favour by appointing individuals with links to the NPP to manage the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has named Mrs Jean Mensa, Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) as the new Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

The newly-appointed deputies are a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Eric Asare Bossman; Ms Adjoa Esuama Abrefa, a corporate legal practitioner with specialisation in land property acquisition, and Samuel Tettey, Director of Electoral services in charge of elections at the Electoral Commission.

Commenting on the development, the Minority Spokesperson on Communications, A.B.A. Fuseini, told Class FM’s Parliamentary correspondent Ekow Annan that: “We have no doubt in our minds that the NPP is in an attempt to pack the Electoral Commission in order to steal the verdict of 2020 because they are so hopelessly uninspiring and many Ghanaians are ready to boot them out”.

He said the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) “had problems with the IEA (Institute of Economic Affairs) at some point in time and had to boycott the IEA under her patronage, so we have issues with this, regarding the credentials of Ms Mensa.”

“Even Bossman, they have made statements to the effect that they are sympathetic to the NPP and there is no doubt about that,” he added.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu constituency further accused the government of hastening “to bundle the Commissioners out and then go ahead and immediately appoint people of their liking to those positions”.

Read: Jean Mensa is anti-NDC; Nana Addo abused his powers NDC

  • Fall armyworms return, take over 300 farms in Upper East

Fall armyworms have invaded over 300 farms in 20 communities in the Garu and Tempane Districts of the Upper East Region.

The development which is wreaking havoc on maize farms has also affected rice, groundnuts and sorghum farms as well.

Some affected farmers told Citi News that attempts to get chemicals from the district agricultural office to fight the armyworm invasion have so far proved futile.
They sai if immediate steps are not taken by the district office to solve the problem, they will record low yields this year.

A farmer, Hawa Zakari, who cultivated six hectares of maize had three hectares destroyed by the fall armyworms but has not been able to acquire chemicals from the district office of the Ministry of Agriculture to spray her farm.

Another farmer, Abudu Issah, from the Gbelinginzuus electoral area in Garu, cultivated 12 hectares of maize, but had seven hectares affected by the fall armyworms.

“I have cultivated six hectares of maize but the fall armyworms have affected four hectares. I have tried to get the chemicals from the MOFA office or the open market but to no avail” Zaratu Halida of Zamballa electoral area in Tempane stated.

The District Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the Tempane district, Denis Asampambila, explained that, although the scale of the destruction is huge, the directorate is running out of chemicals to treat the farms.

“We are recording extensive invasion. About 20 communities have reported cases of fall armyworms invasion in over 300 farms. They are in all the crops even rice, groundnuts but maize farms are the worse affected.”

However, with the chemicals we have now, we hope to arrest the situation this year, as at now we have few chemicals to spray but as time goes on it may not be enough for everybody”.

In the last year or two, several attempts have been made to fight the fall armyworms invasion, but it appears a permanent solution is almost impossible

  • VIDEO: It is clever; Prof Adei lauds double-track system for SHS

Veteran educationist, Professor Stephen Adei has lauded the multi-track system expected to be introduced into the Senior High School system in September.

The Dean of Arts and Sciences at Ashesi University said there is overcrowding in most of the High Schools and the proposed system is a very laudable one which will help to cure the issue.

“When I heard it I was so excited because I went to give a lecture at Wesley Girls SHS in Kumasi and the auditorium was so packed that about 500 students were standing outside. What will happen when more numbers are added,” he lamented.

“I believe this is doable and it is workable”, Prof Adei told Kojo Yankson on the AM Show on the Joy News TV, Monday.

The system divides the entire student body and staff into two different tracks. So while one track is in school, the other is on vacation.

Prof Adei also argued that the system is so good that the government should have come up with the idea instead of allowing overcrowding to mar the first year of the Free SHS implementation.

In 2017 when the Free SHS was implemented, a lot of headmasters complained to the media although most did so under anonymity that they have been fed with about two times more than the number of students they requested for.

This put a lot of pressure on the schools with dormitory facilities especially taking the blow.

Prof Adei argues that with the students now being expected to go to school in badges, that pressure is going to reduce and it will breed efficiency since the teacher-to-student ratio will be better than the single track system.

“Some other countries that run the free education system, like Australia, Kenya and Japan run the same double-track system too. Even in USA over 3000 [schools] run the multi-track system,” he said.

    Cost

Speaking on the effect of the programme on the taxpayer, Prof Adei noted that the cost of employing more teachers to handle the scheme should be a cause for concern.

“Also because [with] the single track system, the students are all on holidays for a longer period the facilities are less burdened but now while one badge is on holidays the other badge is still using it so there should be increased maintenance,” he added.

Prof Adei, however, added that like every new system the government should “watch and debug it if challenges occur”.

He also advised the government to engage in a lot of education on the policy and how it is going to work before it is actually rolled out.
“Especially in the local language [media] stations,” he admonished.

  • Bayern president blasts Ozil after shock retirement

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has blasted Mesut Ozil after the midfielder’s shock decision to retire from international football.

Ozil said on Sunday he was quitting the German national football team, citing “racism” in the criticism of him in the side’s World Cup debacle.

“It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at international level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect,” he tweeted.

Hoeness though has come out in a scathing attack on the 29-year-old citing his poor form for the criticism he has been receiving.

“He has been playing crap for years,” Hoeness told German publication, Bild. “He last won a tackle before the 2014 World Cup.

“All he is doing on the field is playing sideways passes. And now he hides himself and his awful form behind this photo.

“Whenever we [Bayern] played against Arsenal we always targeted him because we knew he was the weak point.

“No-one questioned that he was playing crap at the World Cup. His 35 million follower boys, who of course do not exist in the real world, believed that he has played excellently.”

Team boss Oliver Bierhoff suggested after the debacle that Germany should have considered dropping Ozil after his failure to explain himself over the Erdogan picture.

Former captain Lothar Matthaeus also accused Ozil of no longer looking comfortable in the Germany shirt.

  • First malaria drug in 60 years given approval

A drug to treat malaria the first such pill to get approval in 60 years has been given the green light by authorities in the United States.

The medicine is specifically for the recurring form of malaria, which makes 8.5 million people ill each year.

This type of malaria is a particular challenge to get rid of as it can remain dormant in the liver for years before reawakening many times.

Scientists have described tafenoquine as a “phenomenal achievement.”

Regulators around the world will now look at the drug to see if they can recommend it for their populations.
    Relapsing illness

Recurring malaria caused by the parasite plasmodium vivax is the most common type of malaria outside Sub-Saharan Africa.

Children can be particularly at risk, getting several bouts of malaria from a single bite, missing lots of school and getting weaker each time they get the disease.

And infected people can act as unwitting reservoirs of the disease because when the parasite reawakens in their bodies a mosquito can carry that parasite on to someone else.
This can make it hard to eliminate around the world.

Now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has given the seal of approval to tafenoquine, a drug that can flush the parasite out of its hiding place in the liver and stop people getting it again.

It can be taken alongside another medicine to treat the immediate infection.

There is already a medication that can be used to get rid of malaria hiding in the liver called primaquine.
But unlike the single dose of tafenoquine needed, primaquine often needs to be taken for 14 days.

Some experts are concerned that many people feel better after just a few days and stop taking the pills, allowing the parasite to awaken at a later date.

    Caution needed

The FDA says the drug is effective and approves it for use in the United States but points out that there are important side effects to be aware of.

For example people with an enzyme problem, called G6PD deficiency, should not take the drug as it can cause severe anaemia,

The regulator recommends people are tested for the deficiency for this before it is given which can pose a problem in poorer areas where malaria is common.

There are also concerns that at higher doses it can be a problem for people with psychiatric illnesses.

But despite these cautions there is hope the drug, together with bed nets and other precautions, will help reduce the amount of vivax malaria in the world.

Prof Ric Price, of Oxford University, told the BBC: “The ability to get rid of the parasite in the liver with a single dose of tafenoquine is a phenomenal achievement and in my mind it represents one of the most significant advances in malaria treatment in the last 60 years.”

Meanwhile Dr Hal Barron, president of research and development at GSK, the company that manufactures the drug, said: “The approval of Krintafel [the brand name for tafenonquine], the first new treatment for Plasmodium vivax malaria in over 60 years, is a significant milestone for people living with this type of relapsing malaria.

“Together with our partner, Medicines for Malaria Venture, we believe Krintafel will be an important medicine for patients with malaria and contribute to the ongoing effort to eradicate this disease.”

Tafenonquine has been in existence since the 1970s but working with Medicines for Malaria, GSK has repurposed the drug so that it can be used to get rid of malaria parasites in the liver.

The next step will be for the drug to be assessed by regulators in countries where this form of malaria is a significant problem.

  • IFEST backs double-tracking system for free SHS

The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) says it welcomes the decision of the Ministry of Education to adopt a double-tracking system for students who will be admitted into SHS1 in September for the 2018/2019 academic year.

“IFEST believes that the potential increase in SHS enrolments in September 2018 resulting from the high number of 2018 BECE candidates requires the government to implement innovative measures that ensure that no qualified BECE candidate is denied access to secondary education on the basis of infrastructure deficits,” IFEST said in a press statement.

The Institute says it is aware of the plethora of empirical evidence backing the system, noting the double-tracking system has improved achievement rate in many cases than the traditional calendar system.

According to the Institution, the double-tracking system reduces teacher stress and decreases the likelihood of students become over-burdened or drop out of school.

“Besides, the double-tracking system has the propensity of making optimal use of existing infrastructure,” the release signed by IFEST Founder Prof Prince Armah.

IFEST, however, called on the government to create more tracks by opting for multi-tracking system, with three or four tracks instead.

IFEST also urged the Ministry of Education to intensify its public education on the policy and continue its stakeholder consultations, whilst expediting action on recruiting adequate teachers for the smooth implementation of the new system.

“We wish to indicate our readiness to collaborate with government in any means possible o ensure an effective implementation of the policy,” IFEST said.
