  • IFEST backs double-tracking system for free SHS

The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) says it welcomes the decision of the Ministry of Education to adopt a double-tracking system for students who will be admitted into SHS1 in September for the 2018/2019 academic year.

“IFEST believes that the potential increase in SHS enrolments in September 2018 resulting from the high number of 2018 BECE candidates requires the government to implement innovative measures that ensure that no qualified BECE candidate is denied access to secondary education on the basis of infrastructure deficits,” IFEST said in a press statement.

The Institute says it is aware of the plethora of empirical evidence backing the system, noting the double-tracking system has improved achievement rate in many cases than the traditional calendar system.

According to the Institution, the double-tracking system reduces teacher stress and decreases the likelihood of students become over-burdened or drop out of school.

“Besides, the double-tracking system has the propensity of making optimal use of existing infrastructure,” the release signed by IFEST Founder Prof Prince Armah.

IFEST, however, called on the government to create more tracks by opting for multi-tracking system, with three or four tracks instead.

IFEST also urged the Ministry of Education to intensify its public education on the policy and continue its stakeholder consultations, whilst expediting action on recruiting adequate teachers for the smooth implementation of the new system.

“We wish to indicate our readiness to collaborate with government in any means possible o ensure an effective implementation of the policy,” IFEST said.

  • Mamprugu to get improved water system Akufo-Addo assures

Construction of an improved water system for the West and East Mamprusi municipalities in the Northern Region will commence in September this year to supply potable water to the people.
The water system, which will be funded under a $45m World Bank facility to provide water in rural areas for six regions, is expected to supply 35,000 gallons of water daily.

In addition, new boreholes and household places of convenience will be constructed to augment the existing water systems in the Gambaga, Walewale and Nalerigu towns.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed this at a durbar held in his honour at Nalerigu by the overlord of Mamprugu, the Nayiri, Naa Bohogu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, last Saturday during his tour of the three northern regions.

President Akufo-Addo stated that the construction of the water system was in fulfilment of the pledge he made to the people last year.

    Sanitation

The President said that the community places of convenience project, which is being rolled out by the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, would provide some 5,000 household toilets nationwide this year.

He said the Mamprugu area would receive about 300 places of convenience, each for Nalerigu, Gambaga and Walewale, to improve sanitation.

    New regions

President Akufo-Addo further said he had directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to organise referendums in all the new proposed regions this year to determine whether the constitutional thresholds for the creation of the new regions would be met by the vote of the people affected.

“My hope is that the EC will organise referendums this year so that by Christmas, the six new regions will become a reality,” he said.

He explained that at least 50 per cent of the people entitled to vote must do so in each of the different referendums, and of the votes cast, at least, 80 per cent must be in favour of the creation of a region for the demand to succeed.

President Akufo-Addo entreated the people affected, particularly the people of Mamprugu, to vote massively to meet the constitutional demand for the creation of the new regions to bring governance close to them and facilitate development.

Touching on the seismic exploration being carried out in the Voltaian Basin by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, which is negatively affecting areas in the Northern Region, including Nanton, West Mamprusi, Central Gonja and Mion districts, President Akufo-Addo explained that the purpose was to unearth the hydrocarbon potential of the basin.

“It is disturbing and I know it will disturb some people in some communities. It may even go through some farms, but I am imploring you, and all the citizenry of Mamprugu, to co-operate with these activities,” he said.

    Electricity supply

Regarding the erratic nature of power supply in the area, the President noted that work would soon begin to improve the transmission of power.

He added that out of the 434 projects ongoing in the Northern Region, the East Mamprusi Municipality was going to benefit from 80 of such projects.

As part of his tour, the President inspected the ongoing Nalerigu town road project, which is almost complete.

He also cut the sod for the construction of the 25.7 kilometre Janga-Nasia road, which is scheduled to be completed in July 2020.

  • South Africa shooting: Eleven taxi drivers killed in ambush

Gunmen in South Africa have killed 11 taxi drivers in an ambush, police say.

The men from Gauteng province were travelling to Johannesburg on Saturday night when their minibus was fired on.

The victims, and four others critically injured, were returning from a colleague’s funeral in the coastal region of Kwa-Zulu Natal, police said.

The motive is unclear although rivalry between groups running minibus taxi routes in South Africa has led to violence in the past.

Minibus taxis are the most popular form of transportation among South Africa’s population of 55 million.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the vehicle was attacked between the towns of Colenso and Weenen, in the coastal province.

“The vehicle was ambushed. There were 11 fatalities and four were seriously injured and are in hospital,” he told reporters.

“There has been a lot of taxi violence in the area but we are still investigating who the perpetrators were.”

The targeted attack comes days after deadly shootings in the capital Johannesburg, South African media reported.

In one week, a taxi owner reportedly with “no enemies” was shot dead in his vehicle, and two others were killed while travelling under a police escort.

Ten people were also killed in violence related to rivalries among minibus drivers in Cape Town over one weekend in May.

  • Ethiopian ‘prophet’ arrested after trying to resurrect corpse

An aspiring prophet has been arrested in Ethiopia after he failed to bring a dead man back to life.

Getayawkal Ayele had tried to revive the corpse of Belay Biftu by lying on top of him and repeatedly yelling “Belay, wake up”.

It was not successful, and his failure enraged family members who began attacking Mr Getayawkal.

He was saved when police arrived shortly afterwards – although it did not mean he was out of trouble.

Abusing dead bodies is a crime under Ethiopian law and a local police commander has told the BBC that the man, whose real job is as a health worker, is now in custody.

The incident was filmed and has since gone viral on social media.

Residents in the small western town of Galilee, in the Oromia region, said Mr Getayawkal first went to the bereaved family and told them the story of Lazarus – who according to the New Testament was brought back to life by Jesus.

They then appear to have agreed to dig up Mr Belay.

After the failed resurrection, several members of the family fainted on the spot while others became angry and started beating Mr Getayawkal – at which point police arrived and arrested him.

Corporal Appiah has observed that most people who ended up sending others to court or being dragged to court were as a result of unsavoury comments which led to provocation and the worse happened.

The initiative, he said would help prevent untoward circumstances caused by unpleasant remarks that can lead individuals or groups to face the law.

He added that indiscriminate and tribal statements, religious and unguarded pronouncements could also generate confusion and divide Ghanaians as a people, thus, the need to preach peace all the time.

WYT Campaign, he said was not going on only in Ghana, but also UK, Spain, USA, Dubai and called on all and sundry to support it.

He urged them to spread the “good news,” to enable them also live peacefully with the family and neighbours.

  • Police officer educates market women on the use of “the tongue”

Corporal Daniel Kwasi Ofori Appiah, Founder of the Watch Your Tongue (WYT), campaign team, has advised market women to maintain their customers and get prospective ones by improving their human relations through “watching of their tongues”.

“Watching your tongue” means using pleasant words, avoiding derogatory words, insults or name calling that demean an individual but respecting all people irrespective of their age, race or creed,” he explained.

This was during one of the campaign events by the police officer and his team with market women at the Madina Ogbojo New Market in Accra under the WYT campaign.

Interacting with the market women, he said, the tongue was a small part of the body, but was the most powerful.

“As traders, the tongue is also an essential tool in your daily transactions therefore, the need for the education. Relationship between you and your customers can be cordial and maintain them depending on the kind of words used.”

He said some people were losing their incomes and jobs due to their tongues and actions that spoke louder than words.

“Not only should you watch your tongues, but also live in harmony with your colleagues through their speeches and gestures,” he stated.

The Founder, who also works at the court of the law and a musician believes that right attitude in life and appropriate posts/inscriptions in the various media make the world a safer place.

  • Waves of plastic pollution spoil the Dominican Republic’s shores

A 500 strong team of conservationists, locals and the navy has cleared around 60 tonnes of plastic. But the waves of rubbish washed up on the shores every day. The problem could affect tourism to the island, as well as endanger marine and bird life.

The Dominican Republic is cleaning up up tonnes of plastic that has spoilt its Caribbean shores, as authorities try to stem the tide of pollution washing up daily.

A team of conversationists from the Parley group has been working with the local navy, Santo Domingo authorities and locals for the job. According to officials, they have already scooped an estimated 60 tonnes of plastic.

More than 500 people have been recruited for the job but waves of new plastic trash appear on a daily basis.

The Dominican Republic is a tourist hotspot that is famous for its golden Caribbean beaches and unspoilt natural paradise. The waves of plastic not only damage the reputation of the island nation but could kill marine and bird life who become entangled in the trash.

Not just a problem for the Dominican Republic, environmentalists say plastic is emerging as a major issue for seas and oceans across the world. Environmental group Parley estimates that at least 5 trillion pieces of plastic weighing over 250,000 tonnes are flowing in the world’s oceans.

  • SA offers compensation for Marikana mine killings

The South African government has offered relatives of miners killed in the 2012 Marikana massacre the sum of 100m rand ($7.4m; £5.7m) in compensation.

Police shot dead 34 miners on strike over wages, saying they were acting in self-defence.

The shooting at the Lonmin platinum mine was the most deadly police incident since the end of apartheid in 1994, and shocked the nation. Ten others were killed in the days leading up to the mass shooting. The violence left 70 injured, and police arrested more than 200 others.

Families of the miners are being offered the settlement for general damages.

A group called the Socio-Economic Rights Institute represented more than 300 claimants who sued the government for loss of support and shock. It says it will consult the families about the offer.

Former President Jacob Zuma established a commission of inquiry led by a retired judge.

Its findings led to the removal of a police commissioner. It also recommended investigations into police conduct and exonerated senior political figures, including current President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was a director at Lonmin at the time.

He was alleged to have called for action to be taken against the wildcat strikers, but the commission said it found there was no evidence “even on a prima facie basis” that he was guilty of such allegations.

Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor was captured in a video, violently beating up Patience Osafo who was reportedly at the bank to withdraw some money.

In the video, the police officer, who was armed with an assault rifle, is seen striking the woman, who was holding her baby, multiple times on the head, first with an umbrella, and then with his fists.

Speaking to Citi News, Director General of Police Public Affairs, ACP David Eklu said the investigations have begun.

  • Apremdo chief destooled for ‘pursuing selfish agenda’

Kingmakers of Apremdo Division in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis have destooled Nana Egya Kwamina XI popularly known in the private life as William Eghan as the Chief of Apremdo for disrespecting the stool and pursuing a selfish agenda.

The deposed chief was enstooled as the chief of Apremdo after a protracted chieftaincy dispute which had left the community without a chief for some time now.

The kingmakers as part of their customary duties, advised Nana Egya Kwamina XI to desist from engaging himself in any activities that bring the office of the stool he occupies into disrepute.

Addressing the media at a press conference on Friday, spokesperson, John Nat Panyin on behalf of the Ebusuapanyin Dominic Yalley, described the conduct of the deposed chief as uncivilized, uncultured and a total disgrace to chieftaincy in Ghana.

He alleged that the deposed chief had misconducted himself publicly by physically assaulting his subjects as well as allowing the indiscriminate sale of stool lands.

He said the deposed chief deceived him and one Obaapanyin Yaa Kwesi-Efua to subscribe their names to a writ to destool the Queen mother when they had no intentions to do so.

Ebusuapanyin Yalley, therefore, called on the security agencies not to interfere in the affairs of Apremdo chieftaincy issues in order not to create unnecessary tension in the community.

He also called on corporate bodies, various institutions and the general public not to engage the deposed chief in matters pertaining to the stool of Apremdo.
