  • Therell be no VAT increment Ofori-Atta declares

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Attah has promised that the government will not increase the Value Added Tax (VAT), contrary to earlier reports.

Presenting the 2018 mid-year budget review in Parliament on Thursday, the finance minister said the government would not increase the VAT rate despite some economic challenges.

“I wish to assure the House that VAT will not be increased, Ken Ofori-Atta declared.”

Ahead of the reading, there had been suggestions that there may be an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) and National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL).

This was after a report by a pro-government newspaper, The New Statesman, suggested that VAT and NHIL may be increased from 17.5 percent to 21.5 percent.

Though the government tried to allay the fears that the reports sparked, some Ghanaians including the Minority caucus in Parliament said the introduction of new taxes could affect businesses and the cost of living.

At a press to present its review of the economy for the year, the Minority said it only sees tough times ahead for Ghanaians.

The Minority Spokesperson on Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, predicted that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, would on Thursday announce a barrage of new taxes and reintroduce some old taxes scrapped in the 2017 budget, in his mid-year budget review.

However, Mr. Ofori Atta said the government would maintain the current VAT rate of 17.5 percent.

  • I feel like a prophet, 10 years after Ghana Telecom sale Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that the current performance of Vodafone Ghana in the telecom industry shows that he made a wise decision in selling Ghana Telecom.

According to him, the present position of Vodafone Ghana, ranked as the second biggest after MTN makes him “feel like a seer or a prophet” whose critics did not see what he intended.

This is not the first time former President Kufuor has defended the decision to sell 70 percent of the then Ghana Telecom to Vodafone in 2008.

In 2014, he reiterated that he would repeat the act hundred times if in given the opportunity again.

The deal was worth about 900 million dollars.

Speaking after he was honored at a ceremony to mark the 10th Anniversary of Vodafone Ghana, Former President Kufuor reiterated that he has proven his critics wrong.

“There was a lot of criticisms when a government I led decided to give the concession to Vodafone. Thankfully, within the past ten years, I believe that the step we took have been vindicated such that now, as I sit here, I feel a bit like a seer, a prophet for deciding on Vodafone”.

He maintained that Ghana Telecom was not operating profitably at the time and needed financial and capital injection to save it from collapse.

Meanwhile Former President Kufuor has urged Vodafone Ghana to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange to allow Ghanaians own part of the company.

  • Jose Mourinho hopes Pogba ‘understands why he was good’

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he hopes World Cup winner Paul Pogba “understands why he was very good” during the tournament.

Red Devils midfielder Pogba scored as France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final to win the World Cup for the second time.

Mourinho said the 25-year-old was “absolutely brilliant” in Les Bleus’ final three matches in Russia.

“It’s about him understanding why he was so good, especially in the second part of the competition,” he said.

“I think that’s the point, about his performance level and his contribution to a winning team.”

Pogba joined United for a then world record £89m in August 2016, but fell out of favour at times during the 2017-18 campaign.

He was left out of the starting line-up for both legs of United’s Champions League last-16 defeat by Sevilla.

After France’s victory on Sunday, former United defender Rio Ferdinand said it was “down to Jose to unlock this Pogba we saw at the World Cup because he was responsible, he stood up to a lot of hard tests in midfield, and was a talisman for this team”.

While the Red Devils have travelled to the United States for their pre-season tour, Pogba is resting after his exploits in Russia.

Mourinho, speaking in Los Angeles, said: “I did with Paul what I did with all my players.

“I sent a nice message before the World Cup and during it I did not disturb anyone. They needed to focus on the job for their national team.

“After the World Cup I sent a different message than to the other guys because he won the competition.”

Meanwhile, Mourinho said goalkeeper David de Gea, midfielder Nemanja Matic and new signing Fred are due to link up with the squad next week.

Forward Alexis Sanchez has missed the start of the tour as he has been unable to get a visa.

“He’s very sad. It’s not good for him or me, not good for anyone,” said Mourinho.

“There is no-one to blame – the club is making an effort. I have to respect the US authorities in their process of selection of visas.”

  • Sharks attack two children in New York

Two children have been injured in shark attacks off the coast of Long Island in New York in the first such incidents in the state for 70 years, officials said.

A 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were treated for puncture wounds in separate incidents miles apart along the bay of Fire Island on Wednesday.

A tooth, described as being “consistent with a large fish”, was extracted from the boy’s leg and is being analysed.

Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare in the US state of New York.

The young girl, who was later named as Lola Pollina, said she was standing waist-deep in the cold water and described seeing a fin before returning to the beach to discover “my leg was bloody”.

“I saw something, like, next to me, and I kind of felt pain, and looked and I saw a fin,” she said, adding: “We went to the lifeguards, we ran up to them and they kind of bandaged it.”

She said the shadow in the water appeared to be about 4ft (1.2m) long.

At a press conference following the incidents, chief lifeguard Craig Amarando said that the boy who was also bitten was “a brave boy” who was “very scared”.

He said that his puncture wounds were bandaged immediately, but paramedics then arrived and removed the dressings to view the wounds.

“They confirmed that not only was it a shark bite, but they found one of the teeth still inside the boy.”

Both victims are expected to fully recover.

  • Police killed 7 innocent citizens: families dispute robbery claims

Some relatives of suspected armed robbers shot and killed by the police in the Ashanti region massed up at the regional police command, Wednesday, to demand justice.

The police have maintained all seven, killed on Tuesday, were suspected robbers.

But families of three of the suspects accuse the police of wrongfully killing their relatives.

Three of the deceased have been identified to be residents of Aboabo and Asawasi in the Asokore Mampong municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Halidu Seidu, led family members of the deceased to meet with the police commander on Wednesday.

The families want in-depth investigation into the matter, insisting their relatives were not robbers.

Meanwhile, the MCE has asked the agitated youth of the area to remain calm for the police to conclude its investigations.

“Once the police has commenced investigations into the matter, we should leave the work for them to do and come out with their findings before we do a surgical analysis of the outcome. I call on all the youth in the municipality to remain calm until we hear from the police before we know what next to do”.

Regional police commander DCOP Kwesi Mensah Duku, at a media briefing, said the officers were compelled to return fire after the suspected robbers opened fire on them.

He explained that, they picked some intelligence last week that some armed men have planned to attack and rob residents and mining sites at Manso Nkwanta.

“Upon receipt of the information, the police deployed some team to patrol Anwiankwanta and Manso Nkwanta. During the patrol on Tuesday, a Toyota Corolla with registration number BA 294 15 and an unregistered motorbike driving towards the Manso Nkwanta direction were signaled to stop but the occupants refused and started firing at the police. The police also returned fire which led to the unfortunate death of the seven”.

DCOP Duku however confirmed that investigations have commenced into the killing of the suspects.

“We have started with our investigations but we will like to inform the general public and those who gave the information to us that they should continue to partner with the police to fight crime in the region”.

The police on Tuesday gunned down seven persons alleged to be engaged in armed robbery attacks at Manso Poano in the Ashanti region.

The operation comes almost a week after two police officers were shot by armed robbers who attacked a passenger bus in the Manso area.

    One of the officers died.

A team of police officers was later deployed to the area to help arrest the robbers.

On Tuesday, seven dead men packed in the bucket of a pick-up vehicle were conveyed to the Ashanti regional police command and paraded as armed robbers.

According to the police, several arms and ammunitions were retrieved from the vehicle of the deceased.

  • Why Priyanka Chopra Is Changing Her Policy on Public Relationships

The evidence is there. Should someone choose to Google Priyanka Chopra’s history, it will turn up a list of (mostly actors) she has purportedly dated over the years. And the actress herself has copped to being in a relationship at some point, telling India Today earlier this year that she was newly single.

    But that’s pretty much it.

Despite being in the public consciousness since 2000, the year she nabbed the title of Miss World, Chopra has never so much as mentioned a boyfriend by name and she certainly hasn’t gone full “We’re a couple. We’re in love,” like her pal Meghan Markle.

“I’ve never flaunted my relationships,” she told Filmfare in 2016, citing her belief in buri nazar, the evil eye. “So if something is important to you, you protect it and keep it close to your heart.” Which means she’s worked hard to prevent people from dissecting her most treasured of connections. “All my life,” she explained, “I’ve never commented on the fact whether I’m in a relationship or not.”

That’s still mostly true. In her most recent interviews, the 36-year-old Quantico alum has dodged questions about her new flame, 25-year-old former boy bander Nick Jonas. But her actions have spoken far louder than any words could. The actress, who once bragged about her ability to evade photographers while out with a significant other, has been snapped with her Jo Bro everywhere from Atlantic City to Mumbai. And while there’s certainly an argument for it being tougher to remain private when you’re dating a star of equal wattage, Chopra has also taken to Instagram Stories to share a few moments directly with her 25 million followers.

To hear pals tell it, though, this romance is worth breaking her long-held rules. Some two months in, the couple “are infatuated with each other,” one insider tells E! News. “Everyone around them thinks that they will be engaged within six months to a year.”

That falls in line with Chopra’s other relationship truism: She doesn’t date around. While she’s bristled at the idea that everyone in her native India is in an arranged marriage, she says her upbringing has dissuaded her from taking part in the casual hookup culture enjoyed by many of her peers.

“I’ve never dated. I’ve always been in relationships,” she told In Style in 2016. In India, continued the daughter of two army physicians, “It’s very different. You like someone, you court each other, you get into a relationship. You’re answerable to each other. Whereas the nonanswerability of dating, my god, I don’t know if I would ever be able to.”

Fortunately for her, just weeks in, she and Jonas have long past the casual stage. That would be those early weeks when the 2017 Met Gala dates (just pals at the time and guests of Ralph Lauren) were attending baseball games, yachting around L.A. and trying to slyly flirt through each other’s Instagram photos.

Since then, they’ve sped through the standard relationships milestones at a dizzyingly brisk pace. She met his family, attending the June wedding of his cousin in New Jersey. And that trip went so well (“They loved her,” a source told E! News at the time, “and he was very proud and excited to bring her around and give her a feel for his home life,”) she returned the favor, bringing him home to mom. (Her beloved father passed away from cancer in 2013, leaving Chopra to memorialize him with a handwritten Daddy’s Little Girl tattoo.)

“They spent time in India meeting Priyanka’s family at a wedding,” a source explained to E! News, adding her mom “absolutely adored Nick and thought he was very charming.”

Once back in New York, they celebrated Independence day with his family—including brother Joe Jonas and his fiancée Sophie Turner, who have quickly become their go-to pair for double dates—and contemplated taking the next leap in their whirlwind of a union. With Jonas already spending several nights crashing at Chopra’s NYC apartment, “The next step is him permanently moving in,” says an insider, “and it has been a discussion.”

Such a move would suggest the well-cut singer-actor has proven himself a worthy mate for the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, who boasts the trifecta of brains (she had plans to study aeronautical engineering before her film career took off), beauty (reminder: she won Miss World) and heart (her self-named foundation funds “education for kids who want to study and can’t afford it,” she noted to People). Because she doesn’t mess around when it comes to relationships.

“I don’t like liars,” she noted to Elle Canada. “When you’re scared of the truth, it’s such a turnoff. I also get upset when people try to ‘handle’ you or don’t give you credit for your intelligence and try to manage you for a desired effect. I don’t like games, at work or at play.”

So she’s upfront about what she expects in a partner. “I’ve high standards,” she admitted to Filmfare. “I need someone who keeps me engaged, is intelligent, well-spoken, well brought up. Because I’m proud of my upbringing. Being decent and courteous like my father is important to me.”

(Score one for Jonas who said of his squeaky-clean childhood during a 2016 Reddit AMA, from an incredibly religious home, growing up my dad was a pastor, and much like The First Family or people in front of the public eye, we were highly scrutinized as a family within the church and looked at as, well I guess you would call an example of what that family image should be.”)

Overall, Chopra’s ideal man, she told the site is someone who makes “my chest swell with pride” much like her mom’s once did for her father. “If he’s not cerebral, if he’s not smart and cannot engage me, then it cannot happen,” she explained to India Today. “That’s the biggest, most important thing for me.”

  • Thai cave rescue boys relive ‘moment of miracle’

The 12 boys rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand have spoken publicly of their ordeal for the first time, describing the “moment of miracle” when divers found them.

Adul Sam-on, 14, the only member of the group who speaks English, told reporters he could only say “hello” when the British divers surfaced.

The boys were trapped in the Tham Luang caves for more than two weeks.

They left hospital earlier on Wednesday and are on their way home.

The 12, who are members of a junior football team, the Wild Boars, appeared in their club’s kit at a news conference in Chiang Rai.

They were greeted by a banner that read “Bringing the Wild Boars Home” on a stage designed to look like a football pitch.

The boys sat alongside members of the Thai Navy Seals who helped rescue them.

One boy described how they had lived only on water from the stones of the cave. “Water is clean,” he said. “No food.”

Some said they would learn from their ordeal. One promised to be “more careful and live my life the fullest”. Another said: “This experience taught me to be more patient and strong.”

The team’s coach, Ekapol Chantawong, who was rescued with them, paid tribute to Saman Kunan, a Navy Seal who died during the operation.

“We are impressed that Saman sacrificed his life to save us so that we could go and live our lives. Once we heard the news, we were shocked,” he said. “We were very sad. We felt like… we caused sadness to his family.”

The boys are due to be ordained as Buddhist monks for a short period of time, a tradition for males in Thailand who have experienced a misfortune.

Chiang Rai’s provincial governor, Prachon Pratsukan, said this would be the boys’ “only official media interview”, saying that there would “be no more speaking with the press after this”.

“We want the kids to live their normal lives without having any disturbance,” a psychiatrist told reporters.

How did the boys get trapped in the cave?
They entered the Tham Luang cave in the northern district of Chiang Rai on 23 June during an excursion with their coach.

They had planned to be there for only an hour but found themselves trapped after a sudden bout of heavy rain flooded the cave complex, blocking their only way out.

Their parents soon informed officials they were missing, and a search and rescue operation began.

Nine days passed before the boys were found by two British rescue divers.

But elation quickly turned to concern as it became clear just how difficult it would be to rescue boys weakened by their time underground with no food.

The dangers of the journey were underscored by the death of the ex-Thai Navy Seal diver.

    How did they get out?
A team of expert divers guided the boys and their coach through darkness and submerged passageways towards the mouth of the cave system.

Each boy was accompanied by a diver who also carried his air supply. The boys wore full-face masks, which are easier for novice divers than traditional respirators.

Sources in the rescue operation, including divers who took part, told the BBC that the boys were heavily sedated ahead of the rescue to prevent them panicking in the dark, tight, underwater passageways.

Getting to and from the trapped group was an exhausting round trip, even for experienced divers. The process involved a mixture of walking, wading, climbing and diving along guide ropes.

The boys and their coach were rescued in three stages over three days.

All 13 were transferred to the hospital in Chiang Rai where they received medical and psychological assistance.

They will be watched for signs of psychological distress which may only become evident in the months to come.

Who are the boys and their coach?

Captain Duganpet Promtep, 13, is described as a motivator and highly respected by his teammates. He had apparently been scouted by several Thai professional clubs.

It was 17-year-old Peerapat Sompiangjai’s birthday when the group became trapped in the cave. The snacks the boys brought with them to celebrate are likely to have helped them survive their ordeal.

Assistant coach Ekapol Chantawong, 25, was said to be the weakest of the group when they were found, as he had reportedly refused to eat any of the food and gave it instead to the boys.

  • Sack incompetent IGP Pressure group tells President

A Pressure Group called United Press for Development (UPD) has called on President Nana Akufo Addo to sack the Inspector General of Police (IGP) David Asante-Appeatu for his incompetence.

Their call comes after the brutalization of Multimedia Journalist Latif Iddrisu at the Police Headquarters while covering the arrest of NDC Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho.

Read: Provide security clothes for your reporters police to media owners

The journalist was assaulted by a group of police officers when he asked one of them for the technical name for the crowd control vehicle, to aid his reporting.

The Convener of the group, Kofi Asante Mensah tells Adom News Reporter that the IGP is rather blaming non-functional CCTV instead of investigating the matter properly to bring his officers to book.

Read: Manual on effective police-media communications to be introduced- IGP

He said the president should form a committee to investigate the matter and also sack the IGP because “he is absolutely incompetent.”

Kofi Asante Mensah said they will embark on a demonstration if the government fails to sack the IGP because they cannot allow journalists to be brutalized either by civilians or even the police without doing anything about it.

  • Liverpool agree world record deal with Roma for Alisson

Liverpool has agreed on a fee with Roma for goalkeeper Alisson.

The Reds made their move on Tuesday for the Brazil international and are understood to have now had a £67million bid accepted by the Italian club.

Alisson is now free to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made his move for Alisson having decided he could no longer rely on Loris Karius.

Karius produced a disastrous performance in the Champions League final and has looked shaky on his return to action in pre-season games.

The Reds have acted fast to close out a deal for Alisson amid fears Chelsea could enter the bidding as they eye potential replacements for Thibaut Courtois, who is wanted by Real Madrid.

Should the deal for the 25-year-old go through, it will be a world record fee paid for a goalkeeper, surpassing the 53m euros (£46m) paid by Juventus to Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

  • Ethiopian Airlines makes historic flight to Eritrea

Roses and champagne have been given to passengers on the first commercial flight between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 20 years.

Ethiopian Airlines said its “bird of peace” flew to Eritrea, after the end of the “state of war”.

“I am in cloud nine,” flight captain Yosef Hailu told the BBC.

Relatives and friends are expected to be reunited for the first time since a 1998-2000 border war between the two nations shut air and road travel.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has spearheaded a peace process with Eritrea since he took office in April.

He signed a “peace and friendship” agreement with Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki on 9 July, declaring that the “state of war” was over.

The deal was signed in Eritrea’s capital, Asmara, during the first visit by an Ethiopian head of state to the country in 20 years.

Mr Isaias made a reciprocal visit to Ethiopia about a week later.

The two leaders agreed to restore diplomatic ties, and resume air and road travel.

    Who was on the flight?
Former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn was among the passengers on the historic flight.

He told the BBC’s Emmanuel Igunza that he was emotional about making the trip.

“It’s a golden moment for the two countries and the two people,” he said.

Captain Yosef said he was looking forward to meeting friends in Eritrea.

“I’m going back to the place where I grew up. I’m really happy,” he told the BBC.

Ethiopia Airlines tweeted a picture of the pilots in the cockpit before take-off.

More than 450 passengers were on board, Ethiopia’s privately owned Addis Standard news site reported.

Demand was so huge that a second flight left within 15 minutes, AFP news agency reported.

Why is this a big deal?

Eritrea seceded from Ethiopia in 1993.

Five years later, their armies fought over disputed territory along their border.

Some 80,000 people were killed in the conflict.

A UN-backed boundary commission ruled in 2002 that Ethiopia should cede the town of Badme to Eritrea.

It refused, and the two countries remained in a state of “no war, no peace”.

Mr Abiy has promised to hand over territory, but it is unclear when this will happen.

  • Police wrongfully killed our brother Family demands investigation

Relatives of one of the seven robbery suspects who were gunned down by Police in the Ashanti Region are protesting the killing as they insist that he was not an armed robber.

The family of 38-year-old Musah Seidu has accused the police of targeting innocent persons.

It is therefore calling for a forensic investigation into the matter.

A brother of the deceased, Nasir Ibrahim told Citi News in an interview that the family is devastated by the development.

According to him, they heard the news of his brother on TV and later confirmed he had indeed been killed after they followed up.

“It was made known to us by the Ghana Police that he is an armed robber. But we know he is not an armed robber. The Ghana Police Service has carved a niche of a bad image for itself that it has been killing innocent souls to please their paymaster. How can you just kill someone who we know to be the most gentle in our family? Even if he is an armed robber, the right thing you do is to cause his arrest, but the information we picked was that they were just standing there and the police began to fire at them. He can neither shoot. They were not with arms. We are suspecting foul play. We have been with him throughout his life and he is never an armed robber. I was even with him the whole of yesterday.”

“We are calling on the authority to conduct a forensic investigation, to ascertain whether or not he was an armed robber. If they refuse to do that, we the family members will take the Ghana Police and the MCE of Asawase constituency on.”

The Police announced on Tuesday that seven out of the eight suspected robbers, whose attack reportedly led to the death of a Police Officer with the SWAT Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, had been gunned down.

The deceased officer, Lance Corporal Daniel Teiku, was on duty with his colleague, Lance Corporal Eric Nsiah, when eight masked men attacked the vehicle they were traveling in at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta on July 11.

The deceased officer was on duty with his colleague when the incident happened.

The two were on board a Sprinter Benz Bus with registration number AC-644-15 when eight masked men armed with AK 47 assault rifles and a pump action gun attacked the passengers at the outskirts of Ayirebikrom on Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

The two police officers were overpowered by the masked men and were shot alongside with other passengers on board.

The masked men seized the weapons belonging to the officers in the process. The officer was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Saint Martins Hospital at Agroyesum, while the other officer was treated and discharged.

Four other passengers who sustained injuries in the process are also responding to treatment.

The Police has often been accused of killing people without proof of they being robbers. But in most cases, such issues are not investigated to ascertain the truth or otherwise.

  • Sam Warburton announces retirement from rugby

Cardiff Blues, Wales and British and Irish Lions great Sam Warburton has announced his retirement from rugby at the age of 29.

The back row forward has not played since captaining the Lions to a third Test draw against New Zealand in the summer of 2017.

Warburton has been back in training this summer after neck and knee surgery but has now decided to announce the end of his playing career.

“Unfortunately, after a long period of rest and rehabilitation, the decision to retire from rugby has been made with my health and well-being as a priority,” Warburton said.

“My body is unable to give me back what I had hoped for on my return to training.

“I cannot thank the Welsh Rugby Union and Cardiff Blues enough, who have gone beyond the call of duty in providing the support I received to help me get back on the field, for which I will be forever grateful.”

Warburton has enjoyed a glittering career and captained Wales on a record 49 occasions, leading them to a Grand Slam in 2012 and captaining the side at two World Cups.

He will also go down in history as the most successful British & Irish Lions captain of all time.

The Lions claimed a first Test series victory in 16 years when Warburton led them to victory over Australia in 2013, and he then became just the second man to captain the Lions on two tours, as they earned an historic series draw against the All Blacks last year.

Warburton has spent his entire career with the Cardiff Blues and won the Challenge Cup with them in 2010.

Warburton added: “Since I first played aged 10 at Llanishen Fach Primary School, then Whitchurch High School and Rhiwbina Juniors RFC, I always dreamed of playing for my hometown club the Cardiff Blues, Wales and the British and Irish Lions.

“To look back on my career, I’m extremely proud of what I managed to achieve.

“There are so many people who helped me along the way, from schoolteachers, to coaches, friends and family. I thank you so much for supporting my dreams and aspirations. I hope they too can take some pride from my career.

“I would like the make special mention of (Wales and Lions coach) Warren Gatland. Without the faith he had in me and his unwavering support I would never have had the career I was able to pursue.

“To my amazing wife Rachel and my close family and friends who have endured the emotional rollercoaster of my playing professional rugby, I am so lucky to have such a fantastic support network and loving family to help me get through all the testing times.

“Lastly, to all the many fans, with whom I’ve shared some fantastic memories, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for all your support. It’s been an absolute pleasure to represent you all and an honour I’ll sorely miss.

“As one chapter finishes, another begins, which I’ll enter with the same level of passion and determination as the last.”

  • Maurizio Sarri to be unveiled as Chelsea head coach

Maurizio Sarri is set to be unveiled as Chelsea head coach at his first press conference on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old was appointed Blues boss on Saturday, succeeding compatriot Antonio Conte, with the task of improving Chelsea’s league position after the club finished outside the top four last season.

Conte won the Premier League in his first season in charge, which began with many believing Chelsea were in crisis.

Sarri finds himself coming into the most turbulent period at Chelsea since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003.

The Russian billionaire’s visa dispute with the UK authorities has led to the indefinite postponement of plans to rebuild Stamford Bridge and the Blues finished 30 points adrift of champions Manchester City last term.

There are doubts over the futures of playmaker Eden Hazard, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Willian, Alvaro Morata and N’Golo Kante, among others. Captain Gary Cahill’s future was also questioned on Tuesday.

Sarri may be seeking to use his powers of persuasion with Hazard and Courtois, in particular, to stick with Chelsea. But with their contracts winding down – Courtois’ expires next summer, Hazard’s in 2020 – Chelsea’s may be forced to cash in.

There will be questions about incoming players, too. Jorginho followed Sarri from Napoli, but further reinforcements are likely.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain has been repeatedly linked with Chelsea, as has CSKA Moscow’s Aleksandr Golovin, who is attracting interest from Monaco.

In an interview with Chelsea’s official app, Sarri outlined his intention to put his own stamp on the team.

“With one or two adjustments we can try to play my football,” he said.

Watch Maurizio Sarri’s first Chelsea news conference from 2pm on Sky Sports News.
