  • Maurizio Sarri to be unveiled as Chelsea head coach

Maurizio Sarri is set to be unveiled as Chelsea head coach at his first press conference on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old was appointed Blues boss on Saturday, succeeding compatriot Antonio Conte, with the task of improving Chelsea’s league position after the club finished outside the top four last season.

Conte won the Premier League in his first season in charge, which began with many believing Chelsea were in crisis.

Sarri finds himself coming into the most turbulent period at Chelsea since Roman Abramovich’s takeover in 2003.

The Russian billionaire’s visa dispute with the UK authorities has led to the indefinite postponement of plans to rebuild Stamford Bridge and the Blues finished 30 points adrift of champions Manchester City last term.

There are doubts over the futures of playmaker Eden Hazard, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Willian, Alvaro Morata and N’Golo Kante, among others. Captain Gary Cahill’s future was also questioned on Tuesday.

Sarri may be seeking to use his powers of persuasion with Hazard and Courtois, in particular, to stick with Chelsea. But with their contracts winding down – Courtois’ expires next summer, Hazard’s in 2020 – Chelsea’s may be forced to cash in.

There will be questions about incoming players, too. Jorginho followed Sarri from Napoli, but further reinforcements are likely.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain has been repeatedly linked with Chelsea, as has CSKA Moscow’s Aleksandr Golovin, who is attracting interest from Monaco.

In an interview with Chelsea’s official app, Sarri outlined his intention to put his own stamp on the team.

“With one or two adjustments we can try to play my football,” he said.

Watch Maurizio Sarri’s first Chelsea news conference from 2pm on Sky Sports News.

  • Snail-hunting teens shot after they were mistaken for thieves

Police in Obuasi have arrested a man who claimed he mistook four boys who had gone on snail hunting as robbers and shot them.

Two of the teenagers, aged 13 and 16, suffered multiple gunshot wounds have been treated and discharged by the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi.

They are Appiah Pinkrah and David Pawla, aged 16 and 13 -JHS 2 and Class 5 pupils of Owusu Sempa Junior High and Primary in Obuasi respectively. The other two who escaped unhurt are Isaac Kotuah, also a JHS 2 pupil and Philip Dankwah, a school dropout.

The suspect whose name is being withheld was picked up Tuesday morning together with his licensed gun.

The victims left their Ehansoyewode home Monday night for snail hunting at Abompe, a suburb of Obuasi. They were spotted in a nearby bush at about 2 a.m Tuesday, by the suspect who fired several shots at them.

They received gunshot wounds on the buttocks, legs, hands and other parts of their bodies.

“We passed in front of a house while looking for a way out of the bush. My friend here poured his bag of snail onto the ground and I then decided to ease myself few meters away. Suddenly, we heard gunshots. The bullets hit me and my friend,” 16-year-old Appiah Pinkrah told Joy News.

According to him, the shots which were fired from the windows of a room were followed by shouts of “armed robbers” as they run for their lives.

“We then heard the shouts calling us armed robbers. I began to feel numbness in my legs. I couldn’t move again. Then a second shot was fired hitting my other friend. He then started crying so we all started running for our lives,” he narrated.

Doctors at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital say the children are out of danger after several tests conducted on them, including X-ray, revealed the bullets did not hit some vital parts.

Pinkrah’s mother, Yaa Akyaa, says the children left home without permission.

She has debunked the suspects claim the children were suspected armed robbers.

According to her, their attacker fired at them with the sole aim of killing them.

She wondered how unarmed children could be described as criminals.

The incident has attracted wild public condemnation from residents of Obuasi. Snail hunting, especially in rainy season is common in Obuasi.

It has become alternative livelihood for most families who were affected by folding up of AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi mine and the ban on small-scale and illegal mining activities.

The Obuasi District police command detained the suspect who reported himself to the police.

His licensed foreign gun has been seized by the police.

  • Government wont reduce cost of 4G spectrum – George Andah

Telcos, hoping for a reduction of the cost of the 4G LTE spectrum before jumping on the band may have to reconsider their decision.

This is because the Communications Ministry has reaffirmed its position to maintain the cost of the 4G LTE at 67.5 million dollars.

Presently, only MTN has been able to acquire one of the 4G spectrum from the National Communications Authority with the three remaining networks complaining that the 67.5 million dollars price is too high.

The 4G, when acquired will among other benefits ensure fast internet speed.

But Deputy Communications Minister, George Andah has maintained that not much can be done about the price of the spectrum.

Speaking at the launch of the Africa Regional Development Forum, Mr. Andah explained that the Telcos will be the major benefactors.

“In every industry, every player would want the cost of whatever infrastructure or licenses they use to operate to come down. We believe that the cost is fair, and if there is new information that requires for a relook at it, we will have a look at it,” he explained.

Management of Vodafone ruled out entering the 4G LTE space, because of the cost.

However, Mr. Andah said government is embarking on several projects to ensure that the cost of doing business in the telecommunications industry is reduced.

He said “government is putting the proper infrastructure in place so that the cost to market by the telcos is actually lowered ad once this is done, then the end price that they are passing over to subscribers will be lower.”

He cited investments by government in the Eastern Corridor and preparations to start work on the western corridor as part of efforts to improve the telecommunications industry.

Meanwhile, the Africa Regional Development Forum will be held from July 18 to July 20, 2018.

The forum will focus on the theme “ICT4SDGs: Towards the implementation of WTDC17 outcomes”. It is organized in partnership with the Ministry of Communications.

  • Ayine sues Controller, police over double salary saga

The Bolga East MP, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has sued the Controller and Accountant General, the government and the Inspector General of Police over the double salary saga.

In the suit sighted by Citi News, Dr. Ayine said the investigation into the claims serves no purpose but to “harass, denigrate and belittle the applicant for partisan political purposes.”

He also wants the court to declare that the Police cannot probe the matter in an “arbitrary and capricious manner.”
In addition, he argued that the investigation is “null and void” because the Controller and Accountant General has not furnished him with evidence of the excess payments.

Thus, Dr. Ayine wants the police to “cease and desist from taking any further action in this matter until the final determination of this case.”

    Background

Dr. Ayine is one of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs said to have received double salaries while serving as both Members of Parliament and Ministers or Deputy Ministers.

25 of the MPs were initially asked to report to the police, but 18 of them were later asked to disregard that invitation.

The Police during its investigation interrogated a number of the accused MPs.

The Minority in Parliament had earlier denied the allegations against its members, saying no crime had been committed.

Per the dictates of public service, an official who occupies both positions is entitled to a single salary, usually equal to the level of a Minister of State.

The MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, MP for Ketu South, Fiifi Kwetey, MP for Wa Central Rashid Pelpuo, among other minority legislators, were investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for allegedly receiving double salaries as MPs and Ministers.

Citi News sources at the CID have confirmed that the findings of the investigations on nine of the embattled MPs have been forwarded to the Attorney General for advice.

A source at the police CID indicated that there may be prosecutions.

  • Bismark Boateng’s switch from soccer to track starting to pay off

For a moment, the announcers at the recent Canadian track and field championships thought Bismark Boateng had won the tightest 100-metre final in the history of the meet. And so did Boateng.

The 26-year-old from Toronto let out a jubilant roar, and ripped off his race singlet in celebration.

“I took my shirt off and ran around the field like a soccer player,” Boateng said, laughing.

Boateng would end up second to Aaron Brown, just a thousandth of a second separating the two. Three-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse was third.

But Boateng’s impressive result against the country’s fastest men confirmed a choice he made a few years ago, when he decided to quit soccer and follow his heart to the track.

“I grew up playing soccer my whole life, but deep down I always wanted to do track,” Boateng said. “In elementary school I did track one time and I beat some guys who were much older than me, so deep down I knew I wanted to do track.”

Boateng’s speed at Ryerson’s open tryouts earned him a spot as a striker, and for two seasons he’d sprint onto through balls and blow past defenders.

Ivan Joseph, the Rams’ former coach and athletic director, remembers Boateng coming to him to talk track.

“He was a guy who (would) get a lot, a lot of breakaways, like he was fast. Man was he quick,” Joseph said. “I said to him ‘Bismark, I think you have a really bright future in track.”‘

Ryerson doesn’t have a track team, so Boateng transferred to the cross-town rival York Lions and

would win gold in the 60 metres at the Canadian university championships in 2015 and silver in 2016.

His big breakthrough came when he got a call to replace De Grasse, who was still rehabilitating his hamstring injury, at the Commonwealth Games in April in Australia.

Boateng’s first major international meet wasn’t worthy of any shirtless celebrations — he qualified for the 200-metre semifinals, but not the final, and he and Oluwasegun Makinde dropped the baton in the heats of the 4×100 relay. But for perhaps the first time, Boateng felt at home on track and field’s big stage.

“For some reason I wasn’t nervous or anything, I felt I belonged on the international level, so that’s what gave me the confidence. I thought ‘I think I’m good for this,”‘ Boateng said.

The five-foot-10 sprinter ran a fast 10.14 in the 100 a couple of weeks later in Baton Rouge, La.

His coach Charles Allen wasn’t surprised by the breakthrough, saying this season has been all about keeping Boateng healthy after some injuries, and exposing him to international competition.

“That (fast time in Louisiana) was the plan all along,” Allen said. “Nobody really knows what’s in the mind of the coach, other than you kind of let the athlete in on what they need to know as they’re preparing . . . and when he had the opportunity to compete at the Commonwealth Games and prepare with Team Canada that really helped his motivation and allowed him to commit more to what he is doing in terms of execution.”

Allen, a former 110-metre hurdler who was sixth at the 2004 Athens Olympics, said Boateng’s need to make a living outside track — he’s a personal trainer — has thrown a wrench in his training in the past. Boateng is at that tricky in-between stage athletes inevitably face where they need to train full-time, but aren’t quite at the level globally to make any money doing it.

“But we made a pact: you can’t sacrifice what we’re trying to get done on the track for anything, because one injury or one step backwards really takes away a lot,” Allen said. “So he made that commitment to put track first in every way. He made a heck of a sacrifice and I’m glad it’s paying off for him.”

Boateng receives some federal funding to covers expenses for things like travel and physiotherapy as a “next generation” athlete, but that “doesn’t allow him to live. He has every day bills and so forth,” Allen said.

The coach is with Boateng in Ireland this week for a pair of meets, two more opportunities to line up against international competition in preparation for the NACAC championships.

The NACAC meet, Aug. 10 to 12 at Varsity Stadium, is Canada’s major international meet of the summer, and includes athletes from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

  • Forbes: George Clooney earns more in one year than any previous actor

George Clooney made more money last year than any actor across a 12-month period – thanks in part to the sale of the tequila company he co-founded.

Forbes estimates the 57-year-old star made $239m (£180m) in pre-tax earnings in the year beginning 1 June 2017.

That puts him second in its annual list of the world’s best-paid celebrities, a place behind boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Kylie Jenner is placed third in the Celebrity 100 countdown, having made an estimated $166.5m (£125.5m) last year.

Earlier this month Forbes said the social media star was on track to become “the youngest-ever self-made billionaire”.

U2, and British acts Coldplay and Ed Sheeran are also included in a top 10 alongside global football stars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Celebrity 100 list ranks “front of the camera” stars around the globe using their estimated pre-tax earnings from 1 June 2017 to 1 June 2018.

Of the 100 top-earning celebrities, just 15 were women – down one compared with last year’s list.

Times are pretty good for those who made it to this year’s list: the world’s 100 top-earning celebrities pulled in a combined $6.3bn (£4.8bn) over the past 12 months – up 22% from last year.

Eleven superstars now cross the $100m (£75.6m) threshold – more than double the number from the last two years combined.

    Here’s the top 10:

    1. Floyd Mayweather – $285m (£215m)

Money Mayweather earned $285m in pre-tax annual earnings last year, and in doing so captured the top spot on Forbes’ 20th annual ranking of the world’s 100 highest-paid celebrities.

The boxer’s August 2017 fight versus Conor McGregor generated more than $550m (£415m) in revenue, with the fighter pocketing $275m of that.

This is Mayweather’s second number one spot on the Forbes list – the other was in 2015.

    2. George Clooney – $239m (£180m)

Clooney’s mammoth payday comes from the sale of his Casamigos tequila company to drinks giant Diageo in a deal worth $1bn (£753m).

The star, who was recently injured in a motorbike accident in Sardinia, founded the company in 2013 with friends Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman.

    3. Kylie Jenner – $166.5m (125.5m)

The youngest of the Kardashian sisters, Kylie Jenner has earned her place at number three after founding a cosmetics empire.

A family reality show and 110 million followers on social media has also done its bit to help. Forbes magazine says Kylie is now worth almost three times as much as her sister, Kim, at an estimated $900m (£680m) and is on her way to becoming the youngest self-made US billionaire.

The 20-year old was a newcomer on the list last year, but has since had quite a significant jump up from 2017’s 59th place.

    4. Judy Sheindlin – $147m (£110.8m)

Judy Sheindlin, AKA Judge Judy, comes fourth in the countdown with estimated earnings of $147m (£110m).

Judge Judy’s been on the air for 22 series and is watched by an average of more than 10 million viewers a day.

She sold the rights to her extensive library for an estimated $100m (£75m) in 2017, which accounts for this year’s high listing.

    5. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – $124m (£93.4m)

Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler turned actor also known as ‘The Rock’, is ranked fifth with an estimated pre-tax tally of $124m (£93.4m).

The 46-year-old’s acting-related earnings – the vast majority of his $124m haul – are the largest ever recorded in the 20 years Forbes has tracked the Celebrity 100.

    6. U2 – $118m (£89m)

U2’s Joshua Tree world tour in 2017 – followed closely by a second current world tour – has seen the Irish band’s earnings jump up considerably.

2.7 million fans turned out to mark the band’s 30th anniversary of their seminal album – making it the most lucrative outing for any artist last year.

    7. Coldplay – $115.5m (£87m)

Coldplay are the first British act on the list. Putting them there was their A Head Full Of Dreams Tour, which grossed more than half a billion dollars (£377m) in its two-year, five-continent run.

That total means Coldplay trails only U2’s 360 Tour and The Rolling Stones’ A Bigger Bang Tour on the list of all-time highest grossing tours.

    8. Lionel Messi – $111m (£84m)

In November 2017, Messi agreed a contract extension with his club Barcelona that will pay him an annual salary and bonus in excess of $80m (£60m), making him the highest-paid footballer.

Add to that a lifelong deal with Adidas and other sponsorship contracts, including Gatorade, Pepsi, Ooredoo, Huawei and Hawkers, and things are looking pretty tidy for Leo.

A theme park based on the Argentinian, the Messi Experience Park, is set to open in 2020 in the Chinese city of Nanjing.

    9. Ed Sheeran – $110m (£83m)

Sheeran is the world’s highest-earning solo musician on the list.

The 27-year old was the world’s most streamed artist of 2017. His album ÷ was the biggest album of the year, racking up 3.1 billion streams around the world, while Shape of You became Spotify’s biggest track of all time.

    10. Cristiano Ronaldo – $108m (£81m)

He was one of the World Cup’s top scorers, and this year also received his fifth Ballon d’Or.

Having spent a lucrative nine years at Real Madrid, the football star made a £99.2m move to Italian side Juventus earlier this month.

His lifetime contract with Nike is worth upward of $1bn (£754m).

Social media key to ‘ungodly’ sums of money

Many of this year’s best-paid celebrities have monetised their strong social media presence, and in doing so, have shot up the rankings of the top 100.

Speaking to BBC News, Zack Greenburg, Forbes senior editor of media and entertainment said: “Two of the biggest stories in entertainment this year are Kylie Jenner and The Rock, who have used their massive followings to make an ungodly amount of money.

“In Kylie’s case, she’s used it to make a business; and in Dwayne Johnson’s, he takes his followers from film to film. It makes them an incredibly attractive prospect.

“They both have among the top 10 social media followings in the world, and it’s no accident that they’re in the top five on this list.”

Similarly, Kim Kardashian West jumped from number 47 in last year’s list to 30 this year – helped in no small part by the launch of her own cosmetics brand, KKW Beauty, in June 2017.

“Social media does play a massive part, but it’s not the be-all and end-all,” added Greenburg. “George Clooney does almost no social media and he’s number two on the list.”

  • South La Estate residents on warpath with Hospital over morgue siting

Some residents of the South La Estate in the Greater Accra region are on a warpath with management of the La General Hospital over the location of a morgue.

The residents say the mortuary poses a health risk to them as they cannot bear the overpowering stench from the facility.

According to them, the stench coupled with the noise from family members and sympathisers when they are coming for bodies of their loved ones has been difficult to bear.

JoyNews’ Maxwell Agbagba visited the area on Tuesday to met angry residents whose houses share walls with the facility, which they say used to be a canteen.

Mr Garbrah alleged that the morgue which was originally built to accommodate 200 bodies is currently taking over 900 bodies.

“Dead bodies are no longer lying on benched but they are being belted with chains and removed by looking at the name tag,” he said.

Another resident said when they got wind of plans to put up the morgue, they protested the idea which made the owners stop.

He claims after the upgrade of the La Polyclinic to a General Hospital, the morgue was built at the blind side of the residents.

However, authorities of the Hospital said the reports of the stench from dead bodies and the smell of formalin are untrue.

Mr Atindana Nsobila who took the Joy News reporter around the facility said on days they expect a lot of people, they engage the services of the police to ensure order.

According to the administrator, they cannot be held responsible for what people do when they are coming to pick their dead relations or loved ones.

  • SAFA President Danny Jordaan seeking to replace Kwesi Nyantakyi as FIFA Council member

The head of South Africa’s 2010 FIFA World Cup bid and subsequent organising committee Danny Jordaan is seeking election to the FIFA General Council in September as a replacement for Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi resigned last month in the wake of corruption allegations sparked by an undercover investigation in his homeland and his vacant position on the General Council can only be filled by an African candidate from an English-speaking country.

Three candidates have emerged from Southern Africa in the form of Jordaan, Seychelles federation president Elvis Chetty and Malawi football head Walter Nyamilandu-Manda.

The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) have already stated that they will select only one candidate from the region though to ensure the best chance of success for that individual and KweséESPN understands Jordaan is the overwhelming favourite.

He is a confidante of COSAFA president Phillip Chiyangwa, who will likely make the final decision on which candidate to select, and comes with the greatest international pedigree after his years of campaign for South Africa’s 2006 and 2010 World Cup bids.

Danny Jordaan will look to leverage his close ties to COSAFA president Phillip Chiyangwa (left) and CAF President Ahmad Ahmad (centre) to further his hopes for a FIFA General Council seat. Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix
COSAFA have until Friday to make their nomination to FIFA, with the election for the vacant position to be held on September 30.

Jordaan is also the president of the South African Football Association and has previously worked on the marketing and television board of FIFA.

He is also a former member of South Africa’s parliament and ex-Mayor of the coastal city of Port Elizabeth.

With the resignation of Nyantakyi, Africa now has seven members on the FIFA General Council, including Vice-President Ahmad Ahmad, who is also president of the Confederation of African Football, and General Secretary Fatma Samoura (Senegal).

The others are Tarek Bouchamaoui (Tunisia), Almamy Kabele Camara (Guinea), Lydia Nsekera (Burundi), Constant Omari (DR Congo) and Hany Abo Rida (Egypt).

  • Nigerian league postponed indefinitely

The resumption of Nigeria’s domestic league has been postponed indefinitely amid a leadership crisis currently rocking the country’s football.

Chris Giwa, founder of a rival faction in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), armed with a court ruling from 2014, is now claiming to control the governing body.

His assertion comes despite serving a ban imposed by football’s world governing body Fifa, who recognise Amaju Pinnick as NFF president.

Domestic football was due to resume on 18 July after taking a break while the World Cup took place.

However the League Management Company (LMC) has postponed the resumption of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) indefinitely.

Read: Nigeria Football Federation boss replaces Nyantakyi as CAF vice president

“The decision is based on the current adverse circumstances in the administration of football in the country as a result of which sponsors, partners and service providers have expressed strong concerns and are reviewing their involvement in the league,” the LMC said in a statement.

Officials have announced that “organizing matches of the NPFL under the current circumstances might cause irreversible damage to the League brand”.

The current saga, which has led to Fifa president Gianni Infantino warning Nigeria to respect the Fifa recognised board or face suspension, is a story four years in the making.

Giwa has insisted since August 2014 that he was elected NFF president in a disputed vote that was not recognised by Fifa.

Fifa threatened to ban the country from international competition if Giwa did not step down, and at the end of September the NFF elected Amaju Pinnick as its new president.

Yet Giwa has consistently put up a legal challenge against Pinnick, whose NFF board’s tenure will expire at the end of September.

  • Ghana National Cathedral plan sparks unholy row

Ghana may be one of the most religious countries in the world, despite being constitutionally secular, but a project to build a new national cathedral has not met universal approval.

Plans for the building, designed by the Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye and to be located on some six hectares (14 acres) near Accra’s parliament, were unveiled earlier this year.

Designs showed landscaped gardens and a concave structure housing a chapel, baptistry and 5,000-seat auditorium, as well as Africa’s first bible museum and documentation centre.

The building is intended to be “a house of prayer for all people”, and will host state occasions which are usually held at Independence Square or the president’s official residence.

Chika Okeke-Agulu, a professor of art history at US university Princeton, wrote in The New York Times in April that the cathedral was “a huge deal”.

“It signals that the country is poised to consolidate the gains of decades of democracy,” he added, predicting it would give Ghana a “globally architectural landmark”.

He hoped it would spark similar projects across Africa but reaction has been mixed, with calls for the money to be better spent elsewhere.

“So we need to build a cathedral so we can boast that we have arrived? Rubbish,” wrote one user on Twitter.

“When did it get to the point that people would rather spend money on the way a church looks than spending money on the sick, poor, homeless and the people of the community,” wrote another.

    Religious fervour

Adjaye is certainly acclaimed: he was knighted in Britain and is best known for designing the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC.

He called it “an immense honour to be granted the opportunity to contribute something of this scale and import to my home country”.

Religion plays a major role in life in Ghana and there are churches, mosques, street preachers and shrines to traditional faiths across the country.

In a 2012 WIN/Gallup poll of 57 countries, an overwhelming 96 percent of Ghanaians said they were religious.

The last national census in 2010, 71.2 percent of Ghana’s population of 23.6 million were recorded as Christian and 17.6 percent as Muslim.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed a 13-member board of religious leaders to raise funds for and manage the new cathedral. The overall cost has not been revealed.

The government has donated land for the project and insists that is all they are contributing.

But that has not convinced some who suspect public money could be used.

“We should render under Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s,” said the general-secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Cyril Fayose.

Fayose stressed he was not against the cathedral but said more details were needed.

“The government meddling in church matters sometimes raises eyebrows to wonder why they are doing it… We are not so sure, the motives behind it are not very clear to us,” he added.

    Saturation point

James Kwabena Bomfeh junior is hoping to stop it before a stone is laid and has mounted a legal challenge to the state’s involvement, arguing it is unconstitutional.

The government should be religiously neutral but was showing preferential treatment to the Christian faith by supporting the project, he argued.

The presidential liaison for the cathedral, Clara Napaga Tia Sulemana, said Bomfeh’s court case had stalled progress on fundraising and development.

She denied suggestions of favouritism, pointing to a government donation of land for a national mosque.

The government has also funded Muslim activities, including to the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

For cultural critic, Nii Kotei Nikoi, the question was less about government involvement.

“In one neighbourhood you can have five to six churches. The fundamental problem is that Accra is saturated with churches,” he said.

He also said it showed that followers of the major religions were being catered for but those of minor faiths or none were rarely considered.

They have appealed to government to come to their aid and order the KMA to rescind its decision.

The documents include all letters written by the Public Procurement Authority in connection with Lithovit fertilizer during the tenure of Dr. Opuni, and all fertilizer contracts entered into by COCOBOD from January 2008 to 2018 among others.

The order follows the failure of the Attorney General to make available the documents as ordered by the court.

Chief State Attorney, Evelyn Keelson, told the court that her department could not help Dr. Opuni since the documents are not in their possession.

It has also been established that between 2014 and 2016, contrary to law, Seidu Agongo and Agricult manufactured fertilizer in commercial quantities when the Ministry had not registered it for Food and Agriculture.

They pleaded not guilty and had earlier been granted a GH¢ 300,000 each self-recognizance bail by the court.

  • No bed syndrome: Establish a Bed Control Center in our hospitals Dr. Anaba

The Executive Director of the African Center for Health Research Policy and Analysis, Dr. Thomas Anaba, is advocating the establishment of a Bed Control Center in all the major hospitals and or health centers in the country to manage all the beds in those health facilities.

These centers, he added, should be assigned with a Bed Manager who will link up with the National Ambulance Service for them to know which of the hospitals have available beds that could admit patients on emergency.

Further to that, these centers, running on a special developed software application, could have a centralized point in Accra where managers of all government accredited hospitals and or health centers, could at a go have access to information on the availability of beds in all the hospitals and or health centers in the country.

“With these centers, we will see a great improvement in addressing the issue of congestion in our hospitals. The national coordination body, which will be the National Ambulance Service, can from time to time link up with these Bed Control Centers to find out where beds are available for them to send patients who need emergency health care service to”, he noted.

In addition to that, he said patients who have received treatment at the emergency ward should quickly be transferred to the main ward to help ease congestion in those health facilities.
