  • Railways Minister signs MOU with Chinese engineers for Kumasi-Tamale rail lines

The China Civil Engineers Construction Corporation (CCECC) is in the Northern Region to assess the area ahead of the Kumasi/Tamale rail lines construction.

A memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed which is expected to be completed in September this year in China for a loan from the China Exim Bank for the execution of the project.

Under the railway development plan the Kumasi to Paga section is referred to as the central spin and it is divided into two sectors- Kumasi to Tamale and Tamale to paga.

The Minister for Railway Development Joe Ghartey who is with the team in the region said the Kumasi/Tamale stretch of the rail line would be funded through the China Exim Bank loan.

He said the line would be less than 400kilometers and would pass through Sunyani and Techiman.

Mr Ghartey said at the time cabinet approved the Kumasi/Tamale route it also approved the joint committee between Ghana and Burkina route which spans from Accra to Ouagadougou.

This line would pass through the Volta Region through Yendi to Tamale and to Burkina.

Mr Ghartey said when it is completed Tamale and Kumasi would have major Terminals with Techiman and Sunyani satellite terminals. He called on stakeholders to suggest appropriate rail routes that will benefit the people.

Salifu Sa-eed added that it would open up the region for more investors come to the area.

He said Tamale is not only the hub of the three regions of the north but also the gateway to the Sahel regions.

He added the rail project would open up the food growing areas to the rest of the country.

  • OccupyGhana demands whereabouts of over GH₵1bn fuel money

OccupyGhana has written to the Chief of Staff demanding investigation into how the state lost a total of GH₵1.4 billion in the loss of over 800-thousand metric tonnes of subsidized fuel.

The loss, according to the pressure group, was captured in the 2017 industry report of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD).

“If true, this is completely unacceptable,” OccupyGhana in a statement remarked, “Also worrying is the allegation that about GH₵5.2 million was lost to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) from diversions of 230 illegitimately subsidized premix trucks.”

Read: Fuel prices to go up by 3 percent

The report by the CBOD also alleges over a dozen infractions and breaches of the law and indicted unnamed officials of National Security, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Office of the President.

The pressure group insisted that persons that would be found culpable should be prosecuted to the “full extent permissible by law, no matter who these culpable elements”.

REQUEST FOR INVESTIGATIONS INTO REPORTED PETROLEUM PRODUCT SMUGGLING, RE-EXPORT AND PREMIX DUMPING, UNLAWFUL PROFITEERING, TAX EVASION AND FINANCIAL REPORTING INCONSISTENCY AT BOST.

OccupyGhana® has received and studied the 2017 industry report of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD). The report, which we believe has been submitted to the Offices of the President and Vice-President as well as Parliament alleges over a dozen infractions and breaches of the law by, and indicts unnamed officials of National Security, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Office of the President.

We note with concern the alleged revenue losses amounting to GH₵ 1.4 billion in the loss of over 800-thousand metric tonnes of subsidized fuel. If true, this is completely unacceptable. Also worrying is the allegation that about GHS 5.2 million was lost to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) from diversions of 230 illegitimately subsidized premix trucks.

The CBOD alleges losses due to increased smuggling activities along our coasts, under-invoicing, illegal tax and regulatory margins, ESLA under-reporting, Special Petroleum Tax (SPT) transfer pricing, deliberate inefficiencies and illegalities at BOST, unlawful profiteering, tax evasion and export dumping. But what we find even more troubling is the claim that these are happening with the connivance and complicity of officials in the Office of the President, in National Security, and in GRA.

In the interest of the principles of probity, accountability and transparency, we write to request that full scale criminal and highly forensic investigations are conducted into the alleged findings in the CBOD Report. If any persons are found to have engaged in these acts we would urge the prosecution of all criminally culpable elements within the petroleum value chain to the full extent permissible by law, no matter who these culpable elements may be.

  • COCOBOD refutes cedi depreciation’s impact on repayment of dollar syndicated loan

COCOBOD has ruled out any negative impact of the cedi depreciation on its dollar syndicated loan repayment.

According to the Corporate Affairs Manager of COCOBOD Noah Amenyah, due to the sale of the beans in dollars on the international market, the depreciation of the currency has no bearing on the loan which was contracted in dollars.

The loan which according to the regulator, they are on track with its repayment is expected to be fully paid by the end of the season which ends in August to pave way for the new crop season which begins in September the same year.

COCOBOD in 2017 secured an amount of $1.3 billion for the purchase of cocoa beans for the 2017/2018 crop season following an approval of a syndicated loan by Parliament.

However, there are fears looking at the current depreciation of the cedi, COCOBOD may need more cedi to pay back this loan.

But speaking to JoyBusiness Noah Amenyah, said trading in dollars protects them from the currency fluctuations.

“We took the loan in dollars and we pay back in dollars, also we trade in dollars and that is not a challenge. This is because the currency we are paid in is dollars after we have sold the cocoa. In view of that, we will not be affected at all.

Maybe when we come to the local market you will see that the cedi is weaker considering its strength against the dollar,” he said.

Mr.Amenyah further stated that “but the current trend with the Cedi would be factored into the setting of the new producer price index for the new cocoa season in 2018/2019.”

The facility was provided for by syndicate banks, comprising Natixis, Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and Ghana International Bank as the initial mandated lead arranger.

The facility, which is an equivalent of GH¢5.850 billion, will be used for the payment of produce from farmers, buyers margins, internal marketing operations, farmers services among others.

It is also expected to help increase cocoa production to more than one million tonnes per annum within the next four years.

The facility according to COCOBOD has a concessionary component of 35.97 per cent, slightly above the government concessionary requirement of 35 per cent and an interest rate of 1% per annum, a service charge of 0.75% per annum, a commitment charge of 0.5% per annum, a grace period of five years, repayment period of 25 years and a 30-year maturity period.

  • Argentina ‘mutually agree’ to terminate Sampaoli’s contract

Argentina and manager Jorge Sampaoli have “mutually agreed” to terminate his contract in the wake of the team’s disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign.

The 2014 runners-up went out of the tournament courtesy of a 4-3 defeat by France at the last-16 stage.

Sampaoli, 58, took charge of his home country in May 2017 and the team scraped through qualifying.

Physical trainer Jorge Desio and video analyst Matias Manna have also left with Sampaoli.

The Argentina Football Association said: “Today, the Argentine Football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract.”

The team only progressed from the group stages in Russia with an 86th-minute winner from Marcos Rojo against Nigeria.

That came after Argentina drew their first game 1-1 with Iceland before a 3-0 defeat by eventual group winners Croatia.

The loss to Croatia – which started with a dreadful error from goalkeeper Willy Caballero – was Argentina’s heaviest defeat in the group stage of a World Cup since losing 6-1 to Czechoslovakia in 1958.

It was also the first time the two-time World Cup winners had failed to win either of their opening two group stage matches since 1974.

  • France penalty decision against Croatia wrong, says Dermot Gallagher

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says the decision to give France a penalty against Croatia in Sunday’s World Cup final in Moscow was “100 per cent” wrong.

Croatia’s Ivan Perisic, whose visibility was blocked by Blaise Matuidi, was penalised in the 38th minute after Antoine Griezmann’s delivery from a corner struck his arm, which was by his side.

Referee Nestor Pitana did not initially give the penalty, but was asked by the video assistant referees to review the decision and, after minutes of deliberation, opted to award the spot-kick.

“100 per cent not a penalty. He’s far, far too close to the ball as it comes over the forward’s head,” Gallagher told Sky Sports News.

“It just strikes him – he doesn’t move his hand to the ball, he’s got no intention of handling the ball.

“The law says it has to be deliberate. His arms aren’t in an unorthodox position – it just doesn’t tick any boxes.”

Griezmann converted the penalty to make it 2-1 to France, who ended the game as victors with additional goals from Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba.

  • World Cup 2018: 10 memorable moments to savour

The 2018 World Cup thrilled and excited in equal measure but what were the standout moments?

France won the World Cup for the second time after beating Croatia 4-2 in a pulsating final in Moscow that included a controversial use of VAR.

Russia 2018 will be remembered as a tournament where football dazzled. Giants of the game suffered early exits, goals flew in late at an astonishing rate and England almost convinced football to come home.

Here, we take a look at the top 10 moments from a legendary five weeks but we want to hear from you, too – tweet us @SkyFootball or leave a comment below if you’re reading on skysports.com.

    ‘The Ronaldo game’

It was supposed to be all about pre-tournament favourites Spain – but the headlines were grabbed by a familiar name.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner came to the party in a big way, hitting a hat-trick, dragging Portugal to a memorable 3-3 draw in Sochi and reclaiming the centre stage for himself. Those that declared this game the greatest ever in a World Cup wouldn’t be too far from the mark.

Spain were seemingly heading towards victory after coming from behind twice to lead 3-2 with just minutes remaining, but Ronaldo, who became the first player to score in eight consecutive major tournaments, denied them right at the death with a late free-kick that got the world off their seats. The tournament didn’t look back from that moment.

    Messi melts v Iceland

After Ronaldo’s heroics on the Friday, attention turned to Lionel Messi on the Saturday.

That pressure seemed to take its toll on the Argentina maverick as he had to endure the ignominy of seeing his penalty saved as his side were held by World Cup newcomers Iceland in their World Cup opener.

When Messi stepped up, it seemed Hannes Halldorsson knew this was his moment. He grew in goal. The goalkeeper guessed correctly and dived full length to his right to keep out the penalty – the fourth time Messi has missed a spot-kick in his last seven efforts for club and country.

While Sergio Aguero scored a fine early goal, Argentina did not have the runners ahead of Messi, who had the look of a man trying too hard. Iceland got amongst him and Argentina had no answers. It set the tone for their underwhelming tournament that ended against France in the last 16.

    Kroos stunner

Knowing anything but victory against Sweden would make it difficult for Germany to qualify from Group F, their time looked up with 95 minutes on the clock and the game locked at 1-1. But one more chance would fall. Thankfully for all football lovers around the world it fell to the class act on the pitch.

From a free-kick on the edge of the box down the left, Kroos rolled the ball short to Marco Reus to change the angle. He then caressed a quite jaw-dropping strike through a crowd of Swedish players. The ball floated into the top corner and the Germans were saved.

The only way was up for the World Cup holders, surely?

    Germans crash out

The dramatic victory over Sweden had many people fearing that Germany might become unstoppable on their route to the final in Russia. However, in one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, South Korea ended their tournament before the knockout stages.

With the game locked at 0-0 and Germany needing a win to qualify, Young-Gwon Kim bundled home from a corner and although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, a VAR review showed the ball coming off the foot of Kroos and the decision was reversed. Five minutes later, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer comically sauntered upfield and was disposessed before Heung-Min Son fired into an open net.

The unflappable Germans had become a laughing stock. They were heading home.

    Batshuayi v post

Belgium’s 1-0 win over England was a meaningless final group game that will have been forgotten about instantly at the full-time whistle. But you’ll struggle to forget Michy Batshuayi’s brilliantly yet unfortunate choreographed celebration.

Adnan Januzaj scored the only goal of the Kaliningrad contest in the 51st minute but, despite his delightful finish, it was Batshuayi who dominated the post-match agenda.

The striker scooped up the ball after Januzaj’s goal and gave it a jubilant boot, possibly aiming for the back of the net. But unfortunately he missed the target from point-blank range and the ball ricocheted back off the post, before smacking into his face.

Cue an absolute slaughtering on social media, but one that the striker took well. Batshuayi immediately tweeted after full-time, as he said: “Ahahha I knew I would be f****d the minute I come to my mentions. Why am I so stupid bro s*** hurts.”

    Belgium counter Japan

It was a last 16 encounter that looked one-sided, but ended up producing one of the most exciting comebacks in World Cup history.

After an ineffective first half when Belgium’s golden generation lacked sparkle in the final third and found their best players restricted by Japan’s intensity, Roberto Martinez’s men were soon 2-0 down after a swift combo of ruthless attacks by the Japanese. It seemed yet another World Cup upset was on the cards.

Martinez turned to his bench and called for Marouane Fellaini. It was a game changer. As Japanese players began to tire, Belgium went direct and drew the game level. Surely time for Japan to shut up shop? Nope. They went for the win.

There were eight Japan players in Belgium’s final third as Thibaut Courtois launched the 94th-minute counter-attack by rolling the ball out to Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester City man led the charge before Thomas Meunier’s cross was beautifully dummied by Romelu Lukaku and Nacer Chadli slotted in the winner.

    Eric ends England’s dire run

England won on penalties at a World Cup for the first time when coming through a dramatic shoot-out against Colombia in the last 16. It had a nation waking up the morning after, asking the question: “did that really happen?”

David Ospina saved Jordan Henderson’s penalty to put Colombia on the brink but Mateus Uribe blasted his effort against the underside of the bar before Kieran Trippier restored parity. A big left hand from Jordan Pickford then kept out Carlos Bacca’s fierce effort – leaving Eric Dier to slot home. A nation went potty. Football looked to be coming home.

    Spain stunned by Russia

Every memorable World Cup needs a host nation to deliver on and off the pitch – Russia took care of that in 2018.

After winning two of their Group A encounters, a date with Spain awaited them in Moscow. Few gave them a sniff. However, a defensively-minded Russian side stifled the Spanish, whose prolonged possession was slow-paced and short on risk. Fernando Hierro’s men eventually paid the price on penalty kicks.

Igor Akinfeev saved spot-kicks from Koke and Iago Aspas during a nerve-jangling finale as the delirious hosts ousted the 2010 champions and booked a last-eight showdown with Croatia, where eventually their tournament ended in another dramatic shoot-out.

    Kane’s ‘what if’ moment

England were 22 minutes away from reaching their first World Cup final since 1996 until Croatia dashed those dreams.

Ivan Perisic’s 68th-minute equaliser forced extra time in a tense semi-final that ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. England took the lead through Kieran Trippier’s wonderful fifth-minute free-kick and looked in control of proceedings but squandered big chances to finish Croatia off in the first half.

On 30 minutes, Harry Kane was presented with the key chance when one-on-one with goalkeeper Danijel Subasic. His effort was parried out but the ball fell back to the feet of Kane a few yards out, with just Domagoj Vida on the line to beat. However, Kane could only smash the ball against the post and replays showed Subasic got the most decisive of decisive touches.

    An incredible final

A fantastic World Cup was capped off by a fantastic final, which was packed with both brilliant and controversial moments.

Croatia will have plenty of complaints about the penalty awarded against Ivan Perisic, with debate raging about whether that was the correct decision or not, despite the intervention of VAR.

But there was also brilliance from both teams, with Kylian Mbappe underlining his status as the world’s most exciting young player in the world.

A pitch invasion hinted at political problems but as a sporting spectacle, the 2018 World Cup will be one to remember.

  • No bed syndrome: Completed hospitals left to rot enough to provoke demo NDC MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa Central, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, says hospital projects that were completed and fully equipped by the Mahama administration but have since been left to rot by the Akufo-Addo-led administration should enough basis to spark an uproar.

The Ghana Health Service has issued a directive to all government accredited hospitals and clinics not to turn patients away on the excuse that they have no beds.

This directive was spurred by the outcome of an investigation into the death of a 70-year old man who was alleged to have been denied admission by seven government hospitals, including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, because of unavailability of beds.

Read: Give us a roadmap addressing no bed syndrome Jinapor to Health Minister

Since then, several patients have also gone through same ordeal with the issue provoking a national debate as to the way forward in averting such occurrence.

To Hon. Pelpuo, the situation has arisen because ever since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over the administration of the country, they have left all the projects, especially, the hospitals that were completed and fully equipped by the NDC-led government, to the mercy of the weather while Ghanaians continue to suffer.

“Some of the things that I am talking about now the Kasoa hospital is completely done; all the air conditioners have been fixed and still it is not being put to use. They are getting rotten. These are the reasons why people should gather and demonstrate. It should be politics politics every time. People should be conscious where we are spending our money; why are our resources being wasted?”, he noted.

The Wa Central lawmaker made this observation when contributing to a panel discussion on TV 3, Saturday 14, 2018, on the unavailability of beds that have hit the major hospitals in the country and the way forward.

Commenting further, Mr. Pelpuo said he does not see the reason why the Akufo-Addo-led administration will leave about ten completed hospital projects to the mercy of the weather and make Ghanaians to suffer to the extent that some have in the process lost their lives.

He attributed the neglect of those completed hospitals to policy failure on the part of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

“It is policy failure; it is laxity in implementing the health policy because there should be no reason why anybody will go to the hospital and not find a bed with increase in investment in hospitals that we have done in the past two years”, he stressed.

  • Mbappe: France World Cup star ‘taking crown from Messi and Ronaldo

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are “handing over their crown” as the world’s best players to teenage France forward Kylian Mbappe, says former England defender Rio Ferdinand.

Mbappe, 19, scored his side’s fourth goal as France beat Croatia 4-2 in the World Cup final in Moscow, and won the tournament’s best young player award.

“He is the guy who will be standing up on that Ballon d’Or podium in years to come. Easy,” added former Manchester United Ferdinand.

“I hope my old club are chasing him. He has that connection with Paul Pogba too.”

Paris St-Germain forward Mbappe is only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele in 1958.

Ronaldo, 33, and Messi, 31, have been considered the best players in the world for a decade, winning the past 10 Ballon d’Or awards between them.

Mbappe scored four goals in Russia as two-time winners France were crowned world champions for the first time since 1998.

“There is already maturity beyond his years,” added Ferdinand.

Former Germany striker and manager Jurgen Klinsmann, speaking on World Cup Match of the Day, said Mbappe looked like he had been playing in France’s team “for 10 years”.

“There is so much to come down the road,” added Klinsmann.

“He is shaking up the market. With Ronaldo moving [to Juventus] and [Paris St-Germain’s] Neymar being linked with other clubs, where is it finishing with this kid?”

    ‘Mourinho needs to unlock Pogba’

Pogba returns to Manchester United a world champion after becoming the first Premier League player to score in a World Cup final since Arsenal’s Emmanuel Petit in 1998.

The 25-year-old joined United for a then world record £89m in August 2016 but fell out of favour at times during the 2017-18 campaign.

He was left out of the starting line-up by boss Jose Mourinho for both legs of United’s Champions League last-16 defeat by Sevilla.

“Pogba was immense – especially in the second half,” said Ferdinand. “The pressure was on and he has to come to the fore. There’s a huge price tag to his name.

“He has had a tough season in terms of the media and people from within the game calling him out in a Manchester United shirt.

“It’s down to Jose now to unlock this Pogba we saw at the World Cup because he was responsible, he stood up to a lot of hard tests in midfield and was a talisman for this team.

“For some reason the jigsaw puzzle hasn’t been put together properly in a Manchester United shirt.

“The way the team plays, I think ‘are they getting the ball into him in the right areas?’ He’s not receiving the ball quickly enough.

“Is he being put in the right positions? These are the questions a manager has to work out.”

  • President convenes emergency Cabinet meeting over possible tax hike

President Nana Akufo-Addo has summoned his Cabinet to an emergency meeting Tuesday, as concerns soar over possible tax increases.

Joy News has learnt that the meeting will look at options for raising additional revenue to fund the many social policy interventions rolled out by the government.

Sources at the Presidency tell Joy News there will be only one item on the agenda, which is a proposal by the Economic Management Team to boost revenue. This is coming amid stiff public rejection of a possible increase in taxes

There are speculations that government might increase the VAT rate from the current 17.5% to 21% as Mr. Ofori Attah prepares to update Parliament on the performance of the economy in the past half year, on Thursday.

The Finance Minister himself is tight-lipped about a possible increment as he said he has “no clue where that’s coming from”. “Until I come to parliament we won’t know,” Mr. Ofori Attah told Joy News’ reporter, Kwesi Parker-Wilson.

President Akufo-Addo has not made a firm decision yet on the controversial issue of increasing VAT because of his own concerns about its implications on most Ghanaians.

The government last year abolished some eight taxes and reduced four others, many of which were introduced by the previous government.

According to Mr. Ofori Atta, many of the taxes including duties paid on the importation of vehicle spare parts, were nuisance taxes, the removal of which will ease the difficulties they imposed on Ghanaians.

Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana, Prof. Peter Quartey says a marginal increment in the VAT rate to support the ailing health insurance system is in order but says the government would have to demonstrate to the people that any increment in the tax rate would not go into the payment of salaries.

“A marginal increase in my view wouldn’t be a big deal but to what extent are we going to use it? I am for marginal increment if only it is not to use it to pay wages and salaries,” Dr. Quartey told Joy News’ Anchor, Emefa Apawu on Top Story, Friday.

He, however, said Ghanaians should “expect a good budget” on Thursday.

  • 5 Reasons Why Microwave Oven Cooking Is Harming Your Health

This common household appliance can significantly zap the nutritional value of your food and your health, leaving you susceptible to developing health complications due to continuous microwave use, and begging the question: is convenience worth sacrificing your health?

    Microwaves Zap Food Nutrition

Heating your food in the microwave can strip away its original nutrients. What may have started as a nutritious plate of food has now evolved into “dead food” due to the dielectric heating of microwaves. “They bounce around the inside of your [microwave] oven and are absorbed by the food you put in it,” writes Dr. Joseph M. Mercola, licensed physician and surgeon. The water molecules rotate rapidly in the microwave and in the food in high frequencies which creates molecular friction and heats up your food. This causes the molecular structure in your food to change, and as a result diminishes the nutrient content in the food.

Microwaves Destroy Breast Milk And Vitamin B-12

The health benefits of vitamin B-12 are instantly negated once heated in a microwave. In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers decided to examine the effects of microwave heating on the loss of vitamin B-12 in foods like raw beef, pork, and milk. The results of the study show there was a 30 to 40 percent loss of the vitamin when the foods received microwave exposure. The shift of vitamin B-12 to an inactive form of the vitamin was found in foods during the microwave heating process.

The powerful bacteria-fighting agents in breast milk are also destroyed by microwave heating. Findings published in the journal Pediatrics examined the common practice of using a microwave to heat frozen human milk for convenience in intensive care nurseries. Researchers tested 22 freshly frozen human milk samples to test them for lysozyme activity and antibodies by heating the samples for 30 seconds on either a low or high power setting. Breast milk microwaved at high temperatures was found to have greater E coli growth — 18 more times than the control (unmicrowaved) breast milk. Microwaving at low temperatures also dramatically decreased lysozyme activity and also promoted the growth of harmful bacteria for babies.

    Microwaves Create Carcinogens In Food

When you head foods that are wrapped in plastic in the microwave, you can create carcinogens in the food. Based on Russian research and German studies, the Russian government issued a warning about the health hazards microwave ovens can have on the human body and the environment. The assembling of microwavable foods are found to contain toxic chemicals such as BPA, polyethylene terpthalate (PET), benzene, toluene, and xylene says Foodbabe.com. The plastic containers used to heat these microwave meals have been found to release the carcinogens along with other harmful toxins into your food which is then absorbed by your body.

Microwaves Can Change the Makeup of Your Blood

In a Swiss clinical study, researchers found that blood changes in individuals who consumed microwaved milk and vegetables. The eight participants in the study ate a series of food prepared in different ways, including food heated in the microwave. The results of the study showed red blood cells decreased while white cell levels increased, along with cholesterol levels. The non-ionizing radiation of the microwave can affect changes in your blood and your heart rate.

Microwaves Can Change Your Heart Rate

Microwaves can produce effects on your body instantly due to the 2.4 GHz radiation — the frequency of radiation emitted by microwave ovens. A study conducted by Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University found the levels of radiation emitted by a microwave affect both heart rate and heart rate variability. These levels are within federal safety guidelines but tend to cause immediate and dramatic changes in heart rate. If you experience irregular heart beat or any chest pain and regularly eat microwaved food, it might be best to discontinue use.

  • Accra Rehabilitation Centre cries for help

The Accra Rehabilitation Centre is calling on the government and relevant ministries and institutions to come to their assistance since funds from the government have ceased for some time.

According to the centre, the government used to provide most of the finances of the centre, including the payment of utility bills and other facility user fees.

However, the costs of managing the centre has been left on the shoulders of the management and staff of the centre with little support from social groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

In an interview with The Mirror, the Manager of the Centre, Mr Churchill Darlington, said the cost of educating, feeding and taking care of the health needs of the patients was huge that sometimes the centre has to solicit for funds from churches and well-wishers.

“Running this institution without stable income and needful resources is very tedious. Sometimes we wonder how we are able to make it through the week since we do not have the constant inflow of money”, he said.

He revealed that the institutions needed over US$50,000 to manage the place and provide the needed welfare to the students admitted.

He said the Centre support people with various disabilities and cater for the needs of these people. He said that it was the collective responsibility of the country and the society as a whole.

According to him, the institution trained some patients with disability, such as blindness, deaf and physical disabilities who were of school age in sewing, beads making, weaving, leatherwork, cosmetology, masonry, carpentry, tailoring, soap making and hairdressing.

He explained that students spent almost three years at the centre and, therefore, needed special care and love in order to adapt to the rehabilitation environment.

    Challenges faced

Mr Darlington disclosed that the institution was confronted with challenges such as funds, lack of food staffs, detergents, toiletries, accommodation for patients coupled with improper healthcare facilities.

That, he said, affected the operations of the centre, adding that the centre needed urgent attention.

“Electricity bill alone cost GH¢300 a month while food cost over GH¢13,000 per month. Looking at our source of funds, it is only the support from the government, agencies and corporate Ghana that will help solve this problem.

He has, therefore, urged the government, family members, and churches; social groups, such as fan clubs, women fellowships and telecommunications providers to come to their aid.

“The activities of these students contribute to the socio-economic development of the country as well as reducing unemployment rate and relieve families of the burden to cater for relatives with disabilities, hence support for this institution should not be compromised or neglected”, he added

    About the centre

The Accra Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1962, under the auspices of the Department of Social Welfare (now the department of social Development), to train and empower all persons with disability to acquire employable skills.

The Centre trains these patients in visual art, leatherwork, masonry, carpentry, cosmetology, tailoring, and sewing.

Information gathered indicate that currently, the centre houses 49 patients with 14 being female. It has 26 staff members, including security personnel and trade instructors.

A second suspect, Francis Ahiatroga, 25, who was also planning to attack another okada rider in Ashaiman with the support of Akakpo, has also been arrested.

The two suspects, according to the police, were believed to be part of a criminal gang that had been terrorising residents of Akatsi.

    Briefing

The Director-General of the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, told the Daily Graphic yesterday, that on June 4, 2018, the victim, alias Dokye, 25, was engaged by a customer to take him to Akatsi Anyieme.

He, however, said the lifeless body of Dokye was later found on June 5, 2018 with no trace of the motorbike.

Based on intelligence, Mr Yohuno said Akakpo was arrested at his hideout at Kasoa-Opeakuma on July 11, 2018.

Until his arrest, he said the suspect, Akakpo, had been on the wanted list of the Akatsi police for the murder of Agbanu.

    Akpakpo

Mr Yohuno said police criminal records showed that Akakpo was a notorious criminal who broke jail at the Akatsi Police Station in 2013 while in police custody for stealing.

He said Akakpo was re-arrested and put before the Akatsi District Magistrate Court for escaping from lawful custody and was sentenced to two years.

On the substantive case of stealing, he said, Akakpo was sentenced to six months, having spent 13 months on remand.

He added that Akakpo was released from the Ho Central Prisons on November 24, 2017.

Mr Yohuno indicated further that it was after his release that Akakpo teamed up with two other accomplices to murder Agbanu at Akatsi.

    Ahiatroga

On the arrest of Ahiatroga, Mr Yohuno said after the arrest of Akakpo, the police detected that he was communicating with another suspected armed robber at Ashaiman to attack another person.

He stated that the police subsequently arrested Ahiatroga after a sting operation.

Mr Yohunu said Ahiatroga, who hailed from Akatsi, was suspected to be among criminals tormenting the people in the area.

The two suspects, he said, had since been handed over to the Akatsi police for further interrogation.

The faxed court decision reached the authorities too late to stop Sami A being deported, a court official said.

Sami A had argued that he could be tortured if sent back to Tunisia.

He was detained late last month after the migration authorities had decided he could be deported. But the Gelsenkirchen court had upheld his appeal against that decision.

“I can confirm that Sami A was sent back to Tunisia this morning and handed over to Tunisian authorities,” said interior ministry spokeswoman Annegret Korff, quoted by AFP news agency.

Bin Laden ran the al-Qaeda jihadist network and approved the devastating 9/11 terror attacks on the US in 2001. He was shot dead by US special forces in Pakistan in 2011.

Sami A was considered a security risk while living in the western city of Bochum, where he was receiving €1,168 (£1,022) a month in welfare payments. His asylum application was rejected in 2007.

German media have not reported his full name for privacy reasons.

He denies jihadist links. He has been living in Bochum with a German wife and four children.

At least three of the 9/11 suicide pilots were members of an al-Qaeda cell based in Hamburg, northern Germany.

According to witness testimony from a German anti-terror trial in 2005, Sami A served for several months in 2000 as one of Bin Laden’s bodyguards in Afghanistan. He denies that, but judges in Düsseldorf believed the witness.

Sami A was investigated for alleged al-Qaeda links in 2006, but he was not charged.

He had obtained a temporary residence permit in Germany in 1999 and took several technology courses. He moved to Bochum in 2005.

  • The thing is a brand, converting to mixed hall emotionally traumatising – ‘Katangees’ mount resistance

Alumni of University Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), popularly known as Katanga are resisting a decision by school authorities to assign females to the all-male hall.

They say, sharing the hall with female students will dilute the brand that Katanga Hall has built for itself for more than half a century.

“I don’t think any parent would allow the daughter to go to Katanga or Unity [Hall]; I believe strongly that,” the spokesperson for the alumni, Collins Kankam-Kwarteng, told Joy News.

Read: Katanga, Conti become mixed halls

He added, “Katanga is male-oriented or male-infested everything, the thing is a brand and the whole anthem speaks for itself…and I don’t think that any female would want to go and sleep there.”

KNUST authorities early this year announced plans to convert some single-sex halls in the school to accommodate its increasing number of female students.

There are two all-male halls in the school namely Unity (Continental) and University Halls as well as one all-female hall, African Hall.

New programmes introduced by the school in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are responsible for the increase in the female population on campus.

Soon after the announcement, members of the Continental Hall Alumni Association of KNUST (Old Continentals) said the purpose for creating the all-male hall in 1968 will be defeated if the conversion is allowed to go on.

So far, nine out of 43 females in the first batch of continuing students who are to be given accommodation, have been allocated to the hall.

But Kankam-Kwarteng said the decision will leave a lot of the male students emotionally traumatised, wondering if the authorities have plans of changing a phrase in the Hall’s anthem which that says “…a united family of brothers we wrestle…”

“I believe strongly in my heart and the hearts of the many thousands of ‘Katangees’ that are going through this emotional trauma that no lady…can go and sleep in Katanga.

“And we are waiting to see the first lady who would step foot in Katanaga, no lady can do that,” he avered.

“Whatever we want to say or whatever we want to do, we are keeping it to our chest,” he said.
