  • Political Analyst chides Freddie Blay for vote-buying moves

A political science lecturer of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Edward Brenya, says the timing of acting Chairman of the NPP Freddie Blay regarding the purchase of some 275 buses for his party is wrong.

According to him, the move is a calculated attempt to influence the upcoming election.

Freddie Blay has come under strict scrutiny following the arrival of the buses just days to the crucial national delegates congress of his party for which he seeks to chair.

The buses, worth over $11 million, were received at the Golden Jubilee Terminal of the Tema Port yesterday for onward distribution to the various constituencies.

Chairman Blay, who led the NPP to victory in the 2016 elections after the suspension of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong, promised to supply all 275 constituencies with buses to make them financially self-sufficient.

The 275 Toyota Hiace buses imported from Japan through a bank facility were handed over to the Blay Campaign Team by the agent.

But speaking on Adom News, Dr Brenya said though the reason for buying the buses might be genuine, the timing is wrong and might influence the outcome of the election.

Chairman Blay has, however, debunked the accusations, saying the delegates are worth more than $11million.

He added that he could not personally afford to finance that huge sum of amount, insisting that the initiative was funded by a bank facility.

instagram goddess Moesha Buodong has explained why she made some statements during her interview with CNN’S Christiane Amanpour.

According to Moesha, her interview with CNN was two years ago when she was naive and didn’t have control over anything she said during the interview.

” I was about twenty-four years old at that time and I had no experience about what to say or what not to say in an interview,”Moesha explained

The Ghanaian actress in an interview on ace broadcaster’s Christiane Amanpour’s Sex and Love Around the World said that in Ghana, women sleep with married men to make a living, due to hard economic conditions.

  • AIDS Commission to share condoms at NPP conference

The Ghana AIDS Commission is to distribute condoms at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national delegates conference taking place in Koforidua this weekend.

Ms. Golda Asante, Eastern Regional Technical Coordinator of the Technical Support Unit of Ghana AIDS Commission, told the media in Koforidua the move is to prevent the spread of the disease.

According to her, though the prevalence rate in the region has slightly reduced to 2.1% it translates to the fact that 21 persons out of every 1000 residents in the region have HIV/AIDS.

She said records show that new infection is recorded everyday in the region.

According to Ms Asante, new infections are generally recorded during funfairs and political gatherings hence the need to embark on such drive at the NPP event.

The Koforidua Technical University football pitch which will host the conference is undergoing reshaping and extension to enable it host the over 6000 delegates expected to elect their national leaders.

  • Laryea Kingston hopes Kwadwo Asamoah’s move to Inter will help him rediscover form

Former Ghana International Laryea Kingston believes Kwadwo Asamoah’s move to Inter Milan will offer the midfielder an opportunity to rediscover his form.

Kwadwo Asamoah joined Inter Milan on a three-year deal on Monday, after spending six years with Italian Champions Juventus where he was very successful at, winning the Serie A title in each of the seasons.

However, the offensive midfielder spent most of his days at the Turin Club playing on the left side of defense, which Laryea thinks has restricted the player. The former Hearts of Mithlodian winger believes Inter Milan will give Asamoah the chance to unleash his devastating form once again to the world.

“He has had a very good career at Juventus and the trophies show that,” Kingston told KweséESPN, “but I don’t think we saw the best of him there.

“We’ve always known that Asamoah is best in an advanced midfield position setting up chances, so while he has performed his role at left-wing back effectively, he is always at his best when playing more central.

“I think Asamoah himself will be hoping the Inter move allows him to play in midfield a lot more because that is where he is most effective.”

The former Udinese midfielder says he is ready for the new challenge and feels “better than ever” after his stay in Turin was troubled by series of injuries.

“Last season I felt better than ever, played regularly and training great,” Asamoah told KweséESPN.

“I have always said once I was fully fit I would return to the national team and that time is close.”

  • Real Madrid considering £88m Juventus bid

Real Madrid are considering an offer of about 100m euros (£88m) from Juventus for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 33-year-old Portugal forward is Real’s all-time top scorer with 451 goals.

However his age, and Real’s need to reshape a squad that finished 17 points behind La Liga champions Barcelona last season, has encouraged the Italian champions to make their move.

Ronaldo won his fifth Champions League title with Madrid in May.

Since that victory over Liverpool in Kiev, Real boss Zinedine Zidane has left the club and been replaced by former Spain coach Julen Lopetegui.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future has been the subject of intense debate over the past few years, and his relationship with Real president Florentino Perez has also been questioned.

Any move would eclipse Juventus’ record transfer fee of 90m euros (£79m), which they paid for Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain in 2016.

It would also be more than the £80m Real paid Manchester United for Ronaldo in 2009.

Time for a change of guard at the Bernabeu?
    Spanish football writer Andy West

Reports of Cristiano Ronaldo’s unhappiness at Real Madrid have become an all-too-predictable annual occurrence, and in the past they have always resulted in the Portuguese having his ego stroked, his pay packet boosted and the problem solved.

So when Ronaldo once again revealed his disenchantment with the club in the immediate aftermath of the Champions League final victory over Liverpool, at first nobody took him seriously.

But this is starting to look a little bit different, and there’s a growing sense within Spain that this might actually be the summer when Ronaldo leaves Real Madrid.

That suspicion has arisen partly because the club has not done too much – publicly, at least – to fight to keep him, fuelling speculation that all-powerful president Florentino Perez believes this is the right time to cash in.

If Real can command a fee of 100m euros from Juventus, Perez could well see that as great business for a player who will be 34 by the end of next season.

Lurking in the background is the figure of Neymar. For a long time it has appeared to be just a matter of time before the flamboyant Brazilian ends his Parisian sojourn and moves to Madrid, where his combination of prodigious footballing talent and enormous marketing power would make him a perfect signing.

If Neymar does come this summer, it’s hard to see how both his and Ronaldo’s egos could coexist happily on the pitch or in the dressing room, and the older man would need to make way.

Even if Neymar isn’t captured, Perez is also a big admirer of another PSG star, Kylian Mbappe, whose eye-catching World Cup performances have made him an even more appealing prospect.

All things considered, it could well be time for a changing of the guard at the Bernabeu.

    ‘Wages are the issue’
European football journalist James Horncastle talking to BBC Radio 5 live

It’s his wages which are the big problem because they are four times what Higuain, their current highest earner, is being paid.

Juventus are interested, they have been talking to his agent, but it looks like this will be a very difficult transfer to pull off.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says it have not approved any cream meant for bleaching of lips.

Their comment comes in the wake of news that the use of chemical concoction for lip-bleaching is on the rise among Basic and Senior High School pupils and students at Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) in the Central Region.

It has emerged that “conshore”, a term used for the mixture of toothpaste, bleaching cream and sometimes Ghanaian local alcohol popularly known as “akpeteshie”, is the formular used by the people who engage in this lip-bleaching exercise.

The pupils, both boys and girls, Adom News understands, usually apply the mixture to give their lips either pinkish or reddish looks.

The Head of Cosmetics at FDA, Emmanuel Nkrumah, has told Adom News that his outfit has heard about the situation and will investigate it.

He called on the youth to stop using the said chemical concoction because it is harmful to the body.

Mr. Emmanuel Nkrumah said they were working with the security agencies to arrest those who sell any such chemical concoctions even on social media because it was illegal to do so.

  • EC can operate without Commissioner CDD

The Electoral Commission is capable of operating on its own without a substantive chairperson or a commissioner, Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) has said.

According to Kojo Asante, the constitution that established the commission makes it possible for it to operate without a commissioner.

The comment comes in the wake of the removal of the EC chairperson Charlotte Osei and her two deputies Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaah by President Akufo-Addo.

Their dismissal was after the Committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office.

The Committee recommended their removal on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146(1) of the Constitution.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Wednesday, Mr. Asante said the image of the commission has been bruised as a result of the development.

“There is a lot that has to be done to restore confidence in the EC after what has happened. The EC was in a very difficult place after the 2012 elections. It took a while for the EC to restore confidence again and as we speak, it has dipped again. Article 44(6) of the constitution looks at what happens in the case of death or absence of the Commissioner. The Commission can operate in the absence or death of the Commissioner. The operational part of the EC has to go on despite the dismissal,” he said.

Meanwhile, a private citizen, Fafali Nyonator, has hauled the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Gloria Akuffo to the Supreme Court over the removal of Charlotte Osei.

The action of Ms. Nyonator, according to the writ filed at the Supreme Court Tuesday, is among other things seeking a “declaration that the determination by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice of a prima facie case pursuant to Article 146 of the Constitution for the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is inconsistent with Article 130(a) of the Constitution as by the said determination Her Ladyship the Chief Justice usurped the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to construe and/or define the scope of application of the provisions of the Constitution, particularly Articles 44(2) and 146 thereof.”

  • Return our lands or face our wrath Nana Konadu warned

Residents of Adoagyir, Akwamu, Owuraku and Ntoaso in the Eastern region Wednesday morning demonstrated against the former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings claiming that she has illegally given out their lands to KOANS Estate without their knowledge.

According to the angry residents, they feel cheated over the act since no consultation was done to that effect.

According to them, on 22nd February, 1977 the erstwhile Supreme Military Council compulsorily acquired a land by executive instrument E.I 31 State Lands (Nsawam site for Pineapple production) instrument, 2977 containing an approximate area of 635.20 acres at Nsawam in the Eastern region.

But the residents claim that they are being constantly terrorized by land guards since KOANS estate was given the Lands by the former first lady.

  • Freddy Blay’s buses for NPP arrive at Tema port

The first batch of 100 mini buses out of a total of 275, said to have been purchased by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for commercial purposes, under the leadership of the acting National Chairman, Mr Freddie Blay, have arrived in the country. The 100 buses are going through clearing processes at the Tema port.

The party has arranged with Intercity STC for the public transport company to use the buses and pay the party.

The proceeds are to be paid into the accounts of the party at all 275 constituencies.

Mr Freddie Blay is said to have paid $3million, representing the 30 per cent upfront payment required for the buses from his own resources.

The decision to purchase commercial buses for the political party to use as a cash cow for the running of its constituencies is one of the main campaign messages of Mr Blay who is asking party delegates to vote for him as their substantive chairman at Saturday’s congress in Koforidua.

His main contender, Mr Stephen Ntim has described the move as an attempt to “buy votes” from delegates considering the timing for the delivery of the buses.

But Mr Blay has insisted the plan for the buses is not a new thing.

In all the 275 buses is costing the NPP $11,412,500.

Mr. Blay, according to his aides is the sole “Guarantor” on behalf of constituency chairpersons of the NPP, who are Trustees of the transport facility.

Speaking to some journalists at the Tema Port after taking delivery of the buses, spokesperson for Mr. Blay, Richard Nyamah, said the decision by the campaign team of the acting national chairman to acquire the buses was motivated by his quest to ensure that constituency offices generate revenue on their own and not to rely on government and or the party leadership for their sustainability.

He reiterated that the buses would be managed by STC, a decision which is essentially to ensure that the buses are managed professionally and to guarantee maximum profitability.

The loan facility contracted to acquire the buses according to the spokesperson is expected to be paid back in full within the next two years.

The make of the vehicle is Toyota Hiace 2.5L Diesel High Roof with ABS, Manuel Transmission buses and a unit price is going for $41,500.

  • Increasing crime in Tadi, security expert charges police to be up and doing

Security expert, Adib Sani has called on the police to ensure that they are seen doing their work efficiently to court public trust in order to avoid plunging the country into a banana state.

“If you have a society where the investigation regime is not effective, it serves as motivation to criminal elements that they will be left off the hook and this creates lawlessness,” he said.

“When care is not taken, it can metamorphose into a banana republic of sorts.”

His comments follow an attack on a young man by thugs in Takoradi. The 22 year old man was attacked near Super Star hotel on Saturday, June 30, around 6:30pm.

Narrating his ordeal, the man who wants to remain anonymous says five well-built men about his age, pretended to walk past him at a very crowded area, but they suddenly circled around him like there was a confrontation.

His trousers was torn apart in a bid to destabilise him into letting go of his phone or any monies he had on him.

Two of them sunk their teeth into his neck and ribs. Tried as he did to draw the attention of those close by to intervene, none had the courage till the guys took his money and bolted. The onlookers could only offer support after his attackers had left.

He said he was given GHc5 to go back home by someone he called a good Samaritan.

Another incident happened near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital on the Nkotompo road where men with knives jumped into a commercial vehicle and attacked the passengers, injuring them and making away with their valuables.

Surprisingly, none of the victims reported the incidents to the police.

Security expert, Adib Sani wading into the issue on Connect 97.1 FM in Takoradi blamed it on mistrust of the police by the people.

He therefore challenged the security agencies to be up and doing so as to remove the apathy of the public and build mutual trust.

“We have something called situational crime prevention. The most important focus of security should be on this.

“And one of the ways to enable you do that is to have an effective investigation and prosecution regime”.

In the meantime, residents of Sekondi Takoradi have expressed worry about the situation and have called on the security agencies to take charge of situation there.

  • England end World Cup penalties pain to overcome Colombia

England won a World Cup penalty shootout for the first time on a night of high drama in Moscow, overcoming Colombia to secure a quarter-final meeting with Sweden.

Amid a fevered atmosphere inside Spartak Stadium, Eric Dier scored the winning kick after Jordan Pickford’s brilliant save from Carlos Bacca.

England’s famous victory sets up a meeting with Sweden in Samara on Saturday, a game that can be seen live across the BBC.

Manager Gareth Southgate celebrated with his staff while his players mobbed the heroes Pickford and Dier after their first win at the knockout stage of major tournament since 2006.

Southgate’s side looked to have emerged unscathed from an ill-disciplined match courtesy of Harry Kane’s penalty, only for Colombia’s Yerry Mina to equalise in the closing seconds of stoppage time to send the massed ranks of Colombia fans wild.

The extra 30 minutes could not separate the sides and led to a nerve-shredding finale that has so often been England’s undoing, with a dismal record of just one win in seven shootouts at major tournaments before this.

England looked to be set for more agony when Jordan Henderson’s penalty was saved by David Ospina but Mateus Uribe smashed the following kick on to the crossbar to pave the way for Pickford and Dier to be England’s saviours.

No previous world champions stand between England and the final. The winners of their quarter-final will face either Croatia or hosts Russia for a place in the Moscow showpiece on 15 July.

    England survive test of nerve

England’s survived a test of nerve that will prove invaluable as they drive deeper into this World Cup after a night of noise, colour and hostility in Moscow.

Southgate’s side cast off the clouds of dread that have come over England in penalty shootouts in the past, a psychological lift that may yet help them further down the line.

Colombia made their intentions clear from the off. This was going to be a scrap and Jose Pekerman’s side would be the beneficiaries if England were dragged into it.

England lived on the edge in those physical exchanges but the manner in which they survived and came through that test will add an extra layer to the satisfaction.

And within the dogged team performance, individuals once more made their mark.

Everton goalkeeper Pickford received some criticism for his performance against Belgium but was outstanding here, not only saving that Bacca penalty but producing one of the saves of the World Cup from Uribe’s thunderous drive from 30 yards – which cruelly led to the corner that brought Mina’s equaliser.

And Trippier’s measured penalty was another indication of his growing maturity at this level, the Spurs full-back having again performed solidly down England’s right.

    England edge towards glory

Southgate’s one-match-at-time mantra has been designed to keep expectations in check as his side have been presented with their best opportunity at a World Cup since they reached the semi-finals of Italia 90.

If he was listening to the England fans who gathered and sang non-stop late into the Moscow night behind the goal in the Spartak Stadium, it may have dawned on him that keeping a lid on expectations is likely to be a losing battle.

England will have taken a lot out of themselves in this physically gruelling and mentally taxing last-16 game and they now face the well-organised and resilient Swedes.

If they can overcome Sweden, the possibility of a semi-final meeting with Russia or Croatia comes into view.

England found a way to win here that has often eluded them, digging deep in the process – and they will have headed back to their Zelenogorsk training HQ in soaring spirits.

There is work to do, though, and this was not a flawless performance by any means, but England and Southgate have now regained the momentum they lost in their group-stage loss to Belgium and can look to build on that.

    Referee Geiger lost the plot

American referee Mike Geiger’s failure to clamp down on early misdemeanours led to him losing control of a game that Colombia seemed determined to turn into a battle.

Instead of imposing his authority on proceedings with firm decision-making, he instead indulged in lengthy discussion with players from both sides on numerous occasions.

It lead to Colombia, in particular, pushing him to the edge – although England were not total innocents, with both Henderson and Harry Maguire leaving themselves open to accusations of being over-theatrical and many others sailing close to the wind.

This would have been a tough night for any referee, with players clearly failing to respect his decisions, and making no attempt to make the official’s life easier, but it is to be hoped officials with a greater sense of authority are handed the huge games that remain here in Russia.

The 25th seed had to battle from a break down in the second set but went on to win five games in a row to set up a second-round encounter against either Tereza Smitkova or Viktoriya Tomova.

“I am happy to get through that,” Williams later said in comments carried by the AFP news agency.

“It’s a great feeling to be back, it’s been a couple of years since I played on grass, so it is difficult trying to find the rhythm.”

Williams, a 23-time grand slam champion, is chasing the all-time women’s record of nine Wimbledon singles titles, held by Martina Navratilova.

She is competing in her second grand slam since giving birth, having reached the fourth round of the French Open before withdrawing with a pectoral injury ahead of a match against old rival Maria Sharapova.

  • We’ll bear our teeth at Ken Agyapong after funeral of Amissah-Arthur – Chairman Azorka

The woes of maverick politician,Kennedy Agyapong seem to be coming to an end as the Northern Regional Chairman of the opposition NDC hints that,he and his boys were going to show him their teeth after the funeral of the late vice president, H.E. Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur.

In a statement challenging the Assin Central legislator to come clean,Chairman Sofo Azorka maintained that,at no point in time before, during and after the 2016 elections had his boys met Kennedy Agyapong. He debunked totally allegations that Kennedy Agyapong stopped the Azorka boys of NDC from rigging the 2016 elections.

He said the attempts by Kennedy Agyapong to divert attention as NDC is planning to hit the road on the removal of the Electoral Commissioner and her two deputies will not wash.

“I challenge Kennedy Agyapong to come clean with his diversionary allegations just because NDC is planning to hit the road on the removal of the Electoral Commissioner and her two deputies. We are unshaken with this blatant lies and will soon show our teeth after the funeral of the late Vice President,H.E Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur,”the chairman fumes.

He further pointed out that the allegation made by the Assin Central MP that Azorka boys has been rigging elections for the NDC is untenable, adding that the group is not part of the NDC Election Directorate and does not meddle in their activities.

According to him,the NPP is going through difficulties and can only take to diversionary tactics to resuscitate. The removal of the EC boss and her two deputies is giving the NPP a lot of nightmare in his view, and the only body the NPP and Kennedy Agyapong fear is the Azorka boys, hence the monstrous lies being heaped on him and his boys.

His statement was in response to an allegation by Kennedy Agyapong that he contracted the leader of Azorka boys and promised him a Land Cruiser and gifts just to influence him to control his boys on the day of the elections. He said it took his effort to tame the Azorka boys from intimidating and terrorising voters which would have paved way for the NDC to smuggle their illegally created thumb printed ballots from their disillusioned polling stations to the collation centres for counting.

  • Mikel reveals father kidnapped before World Cup clash against Argentina

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel faced Argentina last Tuesday in the knowledge that his father was being held for ransom, but did not tell anyone about it as the kidnappers threatened to shoot “instantly” if authorities were informed.

Mikel told KweséESPN that he received a call from the kidnappers four hours before kickoff in the decisive World Cup clash in St Petersburg, and they demanded N10 Million ($28,000 US) for the safe return of his father, Pa Michael Obi.

The elder Obi was on his way to a funeral in south eastern Nigeria from Jos when he was abducted along the Makurdi-Enugu expressway on June 26. He and his driver were rescued by police, after a “gun duel,” on July 2, nearly a week after the kidnapping.

Mikel’s father was then taken to hospital for treatment, with family sources telling KweséESPN that the elderly man had been tortured and required multiple stitches. He returned to hospital on Tuesday after some of the sutures broke, and Mikel is considering flying his father abroad for further treatment.

Mikel, speaking to KweséESPN after the rescue, said that he did not tell his bosses at the Nigeria Football Federation, nor did he tell his coach Gernot Rohr, but instead kept the situation to himself and opted to face Lionel Messi’s team as if nothing was amiss.

“I was confused. I did not know what to do, but in the end I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down,” Mikel said.

“I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody.

“And I did not want to discuss it with the coach because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to the coach or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. So as much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not do it.”

Nigeria lost that game 2-1 to Argentina and were eliminated from the World Cup. The midfielder flew home to England almost immediately to deal with the situation, and is scheduled to return to China, where he plays his club football, later on Tuesday.

Pa Obi was eventually rescued by the Nigeria Police on Monday at Egede, near Udi in Enugu State. The news was announced by the Enugu State Police Command via their official Twitter account, and only then did Mikel speak publicly about the incident.

Command spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Ebere Amaraizu said in a statement on Tuesday: “The abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before police operatives acted on intelligence information and swooped on them.

“In the process of the rescue, a gun duel ensued between police operatives and the kidnappers which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued.”

This was the second time that Mikel’s father had been kidnapped. The first was in 2011, where he was released after 10 days. Security will be enhanced around the player’s family in Nigeria, according to Mikel’s advisor.
