  • Well resist attempt to bury Amissah-Arthur outside Moree Family warns

The Maternal family of the late Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has hinted that the family will resist any move for the remains of the former veep to be buried in any place outside Moree in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese district of the central region.

The threat follows some reports that the paternal family and the National Democratic Congress(NDC) are making plans to have him buried at the Asomdwee Park where the late President Atta Mills was buried or be buried at the central regional capital Cape Coast where the late Amissah Arthur and his parents spent a large part of their lives due to the nature of their work.

Speaking to Kasapa News at the family house in Moree, the head of the family, Nana Sagoe Amanful II indicated it will be against their tradition for their son to be buried away from his spiritual home which is Moree.

The family welcome a possible state burial but insisted that the late Veeps remains must finally be laid to rest at Moree.

The impending tussle will be the second tussle in the region as the Otuam Family of the Late Atta Mills keep making claims of possible reburial of the late President at Otuam , the hometown of his parents despite his burial at the Asomdwee Park at the Osu Castle area.

The late Amissah Arthur lost his life at a gym last week at the military installation in Accra.

The plaintiff is seeking “a declaration that the determination by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice of a prima facie case pursuant to Article 146 of the constitution for the removal of office of the chairperson of the Electoral Commission is inconsistent with article 130 (a) of the constitution as by the said determination Her Ladyship the Chief Justice usurped the exclusive original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to construe and/or define the scope of application of the provisions of the constitution, particularly Articles 44 (2) and 146 thereof.

“A declaration that the committee set up by Her Ladyship, the Chief Justice pursuant to Article 146 of the constitution to inquire into the petition for the removal from office of the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, exceeded its powers by construing, or defining the scope of application of, provisions of the 1992 constitution, including article 44 (2) and 146, and thus acted in violation of 130 (a) of the constitution by usurping the exclusive original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to interpret the provisions of the constitution.

A committee set up by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal.

In 2017, the five-member committee investigated alleged acts of corruption involving Mrs Osei and her two deputies.

Some staff of the EC petitioned Nana Akufo-Addo to remove Mrs Osei from office over allegations of fraud and financial malfeasance as well as abuse of office. Mrs Osei also counter-alleged corruption against her deputies insisting that she has done nothing wrong and only being hounded out because she is fighting internal graft. The president, in accordance with the constitution, forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice to look into the matter.

  • Bird flu outbreak: MOFA bans movement of poultry in 3 regions

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has placed a temporary ban on the movement of poultry and poultry products in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Eastern Regions.

This follows an outbreak of Bird flu in those areas, leading to the destruction of over eleven thousand birds.

Out of the number, over five thousand died at Boankra, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, while over five thousand of the birds were killed in Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.
The National Director of Veterinary Services at the Agric Ministry, Dr. Kingsley Micky Aryee, told Citi News the affected farms have also been quarantined to avert a spread of the virus.

“We have destroyed all the animals on the farm, we have buried, we have covered, we have done disinfection, but not all the disinfection, we have to do at least three disinfections. We have also placed the ban on animals from the areas from both farms that are affected or not affected,” he said.

    Bird Flu outbreak

Confirming the outbreak to the Daily Graphic in Accra on Monday, the Head of Public Health and Food Safety, Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Dr. Boi Kikimoto, said the ministry was aware of the outbreak and had already sent samples of the virus to the world reference laboratory of the World Animal Health Organisation in Pandova, Italy for further tests.

He explained that it was a standard procedure because that was the only place with the certified laboratory to test the virus and “secondly, they will help provide the palindromic sequence of the bird flu gene for us.”

    Previous outbreaks

In 2016, more than 25,000 birds were destroyed between January and July, as a result of the Avian Influenza (bird flu) on poultry farms.

In all, 13 farms in the country were affected, out of which seven were recorded in the Greater Accra Region.

In 2015, a total of 76,326 birds were destroyed as a result of the outbreak of the epidemic nationwide.

The plaintiff also wants an order of perpetual injunction restraining President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from appointing Mr Osei’s replacement until that position has become lawfully vacant “in accordance with proper processes as by law established.”

The EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Amankwah, were removed from office following findings of a Committee set up by the Chief Justice to probe petitions of corruption and abuse of office.

  • Parliament is the most ‘disappointing’ body in corruption fight Vitus Azeem

An anti-corruption crusader, Mr Vitus Azeem, has described Parliament as the most “disappointing” institution in the fight against corruption. According to him, instead of Parliament setting good example for others to emulate, Parliamentarians have rather chosen to shield their members when accused of indulging in corrupt activites.

Mr Azeem explained that instead of Parliament allowing independent bodies to investigate its members when accused of any wrong doing, it prefer covering their own by only investigating its members and ending up allowing them to go free in a manner that seems like working for themselves and not the nation.

Mr Azeem who is a former Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) said this in an interview with Graphic Online at the sidelines of the closing ceremony of a two-day anti-corruption training and manual validation workshop for coordinators of integrity clubs at the Samaritan Village in Kumasi.

In attendance at the workshop were 20 teachers who are coordinators of the integrity clubs in their schools from all the ten regions.

The workshop was also used to validate anti-corruption manuals which are going to be the guiding and operating document for the various integrity clubs across the country.

    Background

Following the rising incidents of corruption in the country, the Forum for Actions on Inclusion, Transparency and Harmony (FAITH) in Ghana alliance which is made up of various faith-based organizations in the country teamed up with the Catholic Bishops Conference to find a lasting solution to the canker.

The anti-corruption project dubbed “ I-Shame corruption in Ghana” is aimed at educating the youth in schools to understand what corruption was all about and its effects.

For a start, 20 integrity clubs comprising two clubs from each region are being formed in the selected schools and piloted for two years before being rolled out across the country with support from Star Ghana, UKAID and other stakeholders.

    Challenge

The anti-corruption crusader, Mr Vitus Azeem questioned, “how can you pass laws on corruption and when there is a case against any member of yours, you rather want to investigate yourself.”

Adding, he said until Parliament do the right thing by allowing independent bodies to investigate them, no one would take them seriously.

He recounted the various accusations leveled against parliamentarians such as the double salary saga, the bribery allegation against the appointment committee among others which should have been investigated by independent institutions to get to the bottom of the issue.

Mr Azeem also challenged civil society groups in the country to do more by organizing the populace to demonstrate against and marching to Parliament House to protest against what was going on in the country so they would begin to do the right thing.

He asked “When was the last time they were able to come out with bad findings about a member after they investigated the person so that other institutions would emulate them.

    Commendation

Mrs Irene D. Minston-Amihere, a Civic Education Officer at the National Commission for Civic Education, lauded the FAITH alliance for the move towards the formation of the clubs since it would go a long way to put some fear in the youth to desist from being corrupt.

She said the “I-Shame corruption in Ghana project” was in line with another project being executed by the NCCE dubbed, Anti-corruption, Rule of Law and Accountability Project (ARAP) which requires people in leadership positions to be accountable to the people they led.

The Civic Education Officer reminded the coordinators to be beyond reproach by allow themselves to be influenced so others would emulate their good leadership roles.

  • ‘Aayalolo’ drivers on strike over 5 months unpaid salaries

Drivers of the Quality Bus System (QBS), popularly known as Aayalolo, have embarked on a sit-down strike over unpaid salary arrears.

The aggrieved drivers have not received salaries over the past five months, Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

Commuters who went to the various terminals including Amasaman, Ofankor, Adentan and Kasoa to board the buses to the Central Business District, were directed by staff to patronise private commercial buses.

The industrial action has contributed to long queues at most transport terminals with reports of some transport operators unlawfully charging more than they are allowed to take from the passengers.

Quality Bus System is a pioneer in the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) System introduced by the John Mahama administration.

The BRT has a 22 kilometre stretch from Amasaman to Tudu in Accra Central as well as a subjugator which separates the lane from the main traffic.

This is a developing story and will be updated subsequently.

B Danquah Adu’s widow has blamed his murder on the NPP. Ivy Heward-Mills believes her late husband was so scared about the death threats over his life by some NPP officials.

Ivy Heward-Mills prays to God for vengeance against her husband’s killers Widow of the late JB Danquah Adu believes her husband’s death was masterminded by some powerful forces of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Ivy Heward-Mills, her husband could have chalked his 53rd birthday “if those filthy disgusting ogres had not made a decision to have his life terminated”. In an open letter, Ivy Heward-Mills alleged that her late husband was very aware that his life was in danger.

There is no doubt that Ivy wrote this letter with anger and pain. The content of her letter is yet to be substantiated but it also reveals some unknown suspicions there are about the cold murder of the member of parliament. “God will not spare them. Never! Someday soon, their cups shall fill up and run over and that day, the world will see them for who they truly are. Let them rest assured that their days are numbered,” she fumed.

The death of Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu (JB Danquah) may have been a pain of the past but not for his closest family as they are calling for fresh investigations into his shocking assassination. The family of the late Member of Parliament, at a press conference, called on the government to bring all conspirators of the murder to book.

  • We ‘threw’ dying Amissah-Arthur in a pick-up bucket; there was no ambulance Okyehene

There was no ambulance to ferry ex-Vice-President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur to the 37 Military Hospital after he collapsed at the Airforce Gym on Friday, 29 June 2018 during one of his usual workout sessions, Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panin II, paramount chief of the Akuem Abuakwa Traditional Council, who was also working out in the same gym as the two “friends” had done over the past 14 years, has recounted.

“As it’s been for 14 years, any time I go there [gym], I meet my friend and we’ll talk, shake hands … and then go to our different machines…”, he told an audience.

According to him, as the two of them worked out separately, “… I heard ‘bang’! Three women in the gym were screaming, I left my machine and went and there lay my friend trying to find some air to breathe.

“We gathered around him and pumped his heart as hard as we could, yelled out his name; his wife was calling out: ‘Jesus, save him!’ I just said: ‘Call the ambulance, let’s take him to the hospital’.

“There were about seven, eight of us, and something dawned on me: When we took him out, there was no ambulance, there was no car, we threw the former vice-president in the back of a pick-up and drove off to 37.

“At this moment, I went back to the gym and everybody had departed. The place was empty. I just went and got my towel and my phone, called my driver to take me home.

“I was waiting so anxiously on the phone to hear if somebody will call and say that he’s alright. The call came, and Boakye, the trainer in the gym said Osagyefo, he didn’t make it. The vice-president is dead”, the revered chief narrated.

  • Salah signs new five-year deal with Liverpool

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has signed a new five-year contract with the club.

The 26-year-old Egypt international joined the Reds for £34m from Roma last summer and has scored 44 goals in 52 appearances for the club.

His new deal, which runs until 2023, does not contain a release clause.

“It demonstrates two things very clearly – his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him,” said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Salah was the top scorer in the Premier League last season, netting 32 goals – the most by a player in a 38-game campaign – to win the Golden Boot.

His performances also helped him win last season’s Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

‘When someone like Mo commits it speaks loudly’
“This news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season,” said Klopp.

“We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions – we are working hard together to achieve this.

“When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

“Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment.”

Liverpool finished fourth in the league last season and lost the Champions League final 3-1 to Real Madrid.

Salah had to come off after half an hour against the Spanish giants in Kiev after suffering a shoulder injury.

The problem put his participation at the 2018 World Cup in doubt and he missed Egypt’s opening game – a 1-0 defeat by Uruguay – before starting against Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Salah scored in both of those games but could not stop his country from losing and going out in the group stages.

Liverpool’s players returned to pre-season training on Monday but Salah, other players involved at the World Cup and Netherlands duo Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum were not among them.

However, German keeper Loris Karius, who made two mistakes in the Champions League final and was later said to have been suffering from concussion after a collision earlier in the game, was one of the 26 back at Melwood.

New signings Naby Keita and Fabinho were also at the club.

  • African football is retrogressing – Kwesi Appiah

Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah is of the view that African football is retrogressing following Africa’s poor showing at this year’s World Cup.

All five teams from Africa could not go past the group stages for the first time in 32 years.

For Kwasi Appiah who took Ghana to the 2014 World Cup, what happened at this year’s World Cup with the Africa teams is a sign that Africa is retrogressing on the world stage.

“It has been a difficult campaign for the African teams and we can’t run away from that,” Appiah told KweséESPN.

“With five teams you would have expected at least one through and for the continent it is just not good but you can’t judge football on the continent solely by a difficult tournament in Russia.”

“There is no African team in the next round but the margins were very small. Nigeria gave everything and left the tournament with their reputation intact,” Appiah added.

“Morocco impressed and you can make the case that maybe they were unlucky and Senegal are heading home with four points because of yellow cards so the little details for many of the African teams have.

“If you look at the way many of the African teams have gone out to late goals, it is obvious that there is an issue with concentration in key moments that have to be addressed,” he continued.

“There were also too many goals conceded from set pieces which means for us coaches on the continent these are areas to work and improve on.”

“I have enjoyed watching it. Naturally I would have wanted to be there and I hope that at the next World Cup we are there but I am learning a lot from watching on TV,” the Black Stars boss noted.

“There is so much you can pick from a game and for me this tournament has been a great learning experience.

“It has been a great World Cup and a very difficult tournament to predict because every team has improved and the games are very competitive.

“I have been impressed by Croatia and I think Belgium have done a superb job so far. England look to me like they are playing with a lot more freedom. These three teams for me are all capable of going all the way.”

“Thank you Northeast Ohio for an incredible four seasons,” said James on his Instagram account. “This will always be home.”

The three-time NBA champion was selected by the Cavaliers in 2003 as the first pick in the NBA draft and established himself as one of the league’s best players. He was named the NBA’s most valuable player in 2009 and 2010 and controversially moved to Miami in 2010.

James won his first NBA title in 2012 and added a second championship the following year.

He then opted out of the final two years of his Miami contract and returned to Cleveland.

James helped Cleveland to their first NBA title in 2016, as they overturned a 3-1 deficit in the NBA finals to beat Golden State.

Cleveland’s success also ended the city’s 52-year wait for a major sporting title.

  • Review stance on Grades D7 and E8 – Gov’t directs NTCE

The Education Ministry has directed the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to review its stance on D7 and E8 and submit a report about the possibility of getting students with such grades admitted into the university.

Professor Kwesi Yankah, Minister in charge of Tertiary Education who disclosed this bemoaned that many students could not pursue their academic ambitions and had become street hawkers due to the stance on credit passes in Mathematics and Science.

“Take the example of a candidate with D7 or E8 who has not failed in Mathematics and Science anyway, seeking to go to the university to do history or a subject in Humanities and social sciences that will need little mathematics,” he said.

“Let us encourage those who are aiming at mathematical sciences or engineering and insist that they get credit passes before they move on. But let us not insist on credit for those whose future studies have very little to do with mathematics” he added.

Prof Yankah was speaking at the sixth graduation ceremony of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana, at the weekend where a total of 37 students made up of 26 males and 11 females were awarded a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Sciences.

He said government was also sipping the structure and content of the educational system from merely passing an examination to building capacity and nurturing values to raise literates who would be confident to engage citizens and could think critically to solve problems.

“People must be equipped with the necessary skills and attitudes that will enable them to compete with the best in the World. Government believes that all the hopes of Ghanaians for a brighter future will not be successful unless the country is able to resolve its education crisis,” he stated.

He noted that government was committed to investing in education from basic to the tertiary levels for the transformation of Ghana, adding that, Education was critical in building a cohesive and prosperous nation.

Prof Yankah said Education remained a major priority of the government and for that matter was committed to raising the quality of education at the basic and secondary school levels with emphasis on Science and Mathematics, which were fundamental building blocks for success in the age of technology.

In this regard, he said the curriculum of the Colleges of Education, was being transformed to respond adequately to the needs of the nation especially in literacy, numeracy and science and technology.

He said science and technology were regarded as the international currency under which fortunes of nations would rise and fall but the engine that raised science and technology was mathematics.

Professor Edward Ayensu, Board Chairman of AIMS Ghana mentioned that the AIMS Network had graduated more than 1,300 students from 45 African countries since its inception in 2003 with AIMS Ghana accounting for over 200 of them.

He said most of AIMS graduates were contributing significantly to the development of Africa in the area of Education, research, industry and governance.

He said AIMS would continue to strengthen and improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education in Ghana and Africa for the transformation of the continent.

Prof Ayensu expressed appreciation to the Canadian Government and the Government of Ghana, the MasterCard Foundation and all other donors for their continual support.

In their Valedictory address, the overall best graduating student, Ms Dinah Norvisi Dzikpor, encouraged her colleagues to make an effort to use the knowledge acquired to effect positive change in their respective countries.
