  • Zimbabwe President says he was ‘inches’ from Bulawayo explosion

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has survived an apparent bomb attack at a rally in the city of Bulawayo.

Mr Mnangagwa said an object “exploded a few inches away from me – but it is not my time”.

Video footage from White City Stadium shows an explosion happening close to Mr Mnangagwa as he leaves the stage after addressing supporters.

Health Minister David Parirenyatwa said 15 people were injured, three of them seriously.

The exact number of people hurt by the blast remains unclear – and reports suggest it may be significantly higher.

The president was in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city and an opposition stronghold, to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of nationwide elections taking place on 30 July.

He is favourite to win the poll, but analysts say he also has enemies – both for overthrowing his former mentor, Robert Mugabe, and for being a previous enforcer of the Mugabe regime.

A spokesman for Mr Mnangagwa said that while the president was unhurt, Vice-President Kembo Mohadi suffered a leg injury. Another vice-president, Constantino Chiwenga, received bruises to his face.

Red Cross personnel rush an injured army member away from the rally
Other officials, including Zanu-PF party chairwoman Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, were also injured, as were some crew members from state broadcaster ZBC and security personnel.

Mr Mnangagwa, 75, said he had visited the injured in hospital. He condemned the violence as senseless and pleaded for unity.

“I am used to these attempts,” he told state media.

Mr Mnangagwa came to power last November after ousting Mr Mugabe.

He was evacuated from the scene soon after the blast.

“People started running in all directions and then immediately the president’s motorcade left at a very high speed,” an AFP news agency correspondent at the scene reported.

The elections are the first in Zimbabwe since Mr Mugabe was forced out after 37 years in power.

“Vice-President Mohadi is nursing some leg injuries but he is in good spirit,” he was quoted as saying.

Marry Chiwenga, the wife of Vice-President Chiwenga, was also injured and pictures on social media showed the president visiting her in hospital.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa condemned the attack.

“Political violence of any nature from any quarter is totally unacceptable,” he said.

“In the past 38 years political violence has been a permanent feature and an anticipated ritual… which we must expunge.”

The US Embassy in Harare tweeted “thoughts & prayers”.

The election – dominated by economic issues – is the first to be monitored by international observers since 2002. Mr Mnangagwa has said the vote will be free and fair.

  • The sad story of Ghana’s floods: We develop and plan later- Randy Abbey

If you live in a country where development precedes planning there will always be chaos and flooding.

That has been the sad story of Ghana, Randy Abbey a football administrator and host of Good morning Ghana show has said.

“In the developed world, planning precedes development; in our part of the world, development precedes planning. Every time you have the developers taking the lead and then you have planners having to do the catch up” he stated on news analysis programme Newsfile, Saturday.

He was discussing the perennial problem of flooding that has bedeviled the country for years.

A rainstorm Monday, drowned many parts of the country and left at least six people dead including a young medical doctor.

Aya Hayfron had her car washed away in a Teshie flood while she attempted driving through to her residence.

She was trapped and her body found two days later by some local fishermen at the Kpeshie lagoon.

That was after the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the military; police mounted a search for her after her husband made an SOS call to the institutions to help find her missing wife.

Discussing the matter on Newsfile, the panelists showed some fatigue discussing a yearly national canker.

Randy Abbey quoted portions of a Parliamentary hansard in June 1959 in which the parliamentarians then were discussing plans to desilt and dredge drains as a way of fighting the perennial flooding at the time.

“Next year 2019 will be 60-years since this statement was made on the floor of Parliament. We are still here doing the same thing. We are still being told the same thing, desilting, dredging…”

The TV show host argued dredging and desilting have been done for over 60-years but the country is always flooded anytime it rains.

“The amount of money we spent on desilting and dredging is done every year but that is not the solution…It is waste of money,” he stated and charged the authorities to do the big things.

“We have got a point where we need to prioritize; we cannot spread ourselves thing,” he stated.

The Works and Housing minister Samuel Atta Akyea had suggested the flooding menace could be solved with an amount of $700 million but Randy Abbey said the budgetary allocation by the government does not show a government committed to solving the problem.

Even if it will take five years, Mr Abbey would rather government commit to solving the matter once and for all.

A member of the panel, Isaac Adongo who is also the MP for Bolgatanga says money is partly a problem but the major problem is the political will to solving it.

  • Nigeria captain Mikel slams Croatia decision to rest star players

The Super Eagles could find themselves relying on the Group D leaders – who plan to leave big names out against Iceland – to reach the knockout stages
Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has called on Croatia to be professional and not rest players against Iceland in a match that could yet decide the Super Eagles’ World Cup fate.

Two goals from Ahmed Musa ensured Nigeria remain in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages as they saw off Iceland in Volgograd.

Gernot Rohr’s side now know that a victory over Argentina in Saint Petersburg will be enough for them to reach the last 16 for the fourth time in their history.

And though a defeat to the Albiceleste would confirm their elimination, a draw would mean they require Croatia to do them a favour against Iceland.

Croatia have already booked their place in the latter stages of the competition, and as such manager Zlatko Dalic has vowed to leave out some of his star players in a bid to conserve their fitness.

Mikel, though, does not understand the reasoning behind Dalic’s decision and feels it is unfair on the rest of the teams in the group.

“I don’t think it’s the best thing to do,” he told Goal. “This is a massive tournament – you can’t rest people and give others a chance of qualification.

“They should be professional and play their best team. This is such a big stage that you can’t rest players just to help other teams to qualify.”

Nigeria have faced Argentina four times in their previous five World Cup appearances, losing on all four occasions, but the form of the South American outfit has raised hopes that the Super Eagles can end that run.

Despite counting Lionel Messi among their number, Jorge Sampaoli’s side have picked up just one point from their two games thus far, including an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday.

However, Mikel is aware that recording the victory his side require will be no easy task.

“I think they have played well. It’s going to be a tough and difficult game for us.”

Both Nigeria’s clash with Argentina and Iceland’s match with Croatia take place simultaneously at 7:00pm BST (2:00pm ET) on Tuesday June 26.

  • World Cup: Nigeria beats Iceland

Nigeria put Iceland’s World Cup hopes in ice after substituting a purposeless first-half performance with an attacking intent to record a much-needed win in Russia.

Nigeria made up for 45minutes of lethargy with four minutes of energy and two well-structured attacks to test the goalkeeper for the first time in the game.

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood advice from inside a studio in South Africa was spot on.

‘These guys are not good at possession football. They are fast off the ball and need long passes’.

And Nigeria enacted this advice on the pitch to devastation. All goals a deadly piece of counter-attacking football.

Nigeria from defending a throw-in deep in their half, Victor Moses gained possession and pace darting along the right unhindered. His cross was plucked out of mid-air by Ahmed Musa’s foot and he allowed the ball to kiss the grass lightly before unleashing a shot into the net.

His second would come barely 20 minutes later. Once again, a pass, Stoke-City style, from the Nigerian defense that had absorbed virtually the entire Iceland team found Musa high up the pitch.

Giving the defender a run for his money, Musa run down the right and rounded up the goalkeeper for the easiest of finishes.

  • Stacy was a regular client of Obengfo Lawyer

The late Stacy Offei Darko, Deputy CEO of National Entrepreneurship Innovative Programme (NEIP) has been frequenting the Advanced Body Sculpt Centre since 2014, lawyer for Dr. Dominic Obeng-Andoh has told an Accra High Court.

According to the lawyer, Jonathan Dzansi Ankrah, who is representing the embattled director of the Obengfo Hospital, Stacy was a regular client of the hospital and had successfully undergone a similar procedure in 2017.

He told the court that because the procedure was successful, she went back to the hospital for another procedure this year which also was successful. He noted that it was during her recovery period that she passed on.

Dr Dominic Kwame Obeng-Andoh is before an Accra Magistrate Court for allegedly murdering the late Stacy Offei Darko in May this year.

His lawyers attempted to secure bail for him at the magistrate court but the court declined jurisdiction and directed the lawyers to apply at a higher court.

Moving an application at a Criminal Division of an Accra High Court yesterday, his lawyer, Jonathan Dzansi told the court presided by Justice Kofi Dorgu that Dr. Obeng-Andoh is unwell and needs medical attention.

He said his client is a qualified medical professional who has been practicing for the past 20 years at hospitals including Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as well one at Battor in the Volta Region.

The lawyer told the court that they are well informed that all the relevant persons involved in the investigation have been contacted and they had given their statements to the police. He added that it has come to their knowledge that all relevant documents in the case are also in the possession of the police.

He added that an autopsy has been conducted on the deceased and they are waiting for the results.

Mr. Dzansi told the court that the facts of the case although have been skewed so much, do not support the charges.

He stated that the accused person and his cleaner who is also standing trial for impersonation are all law abiding citizens who submitted themselves to the police when they were invited.

Mr. Dzansi added that Dr. Obeng-Andoh employs more than 100 people and all these people will struggle with their maintenance as well as their families who depend on them.

With regards to the cleaner, the lawyer stated that his offences per the charges have not been defined to be a felony and there is no prescribed punishment for it.

He, therefore, assured the court that the two will avail themselves at all times for the trial and prayed that his clients be granted bail.

  • Ghana-US military deal: Attorney General given 7 days to respond

The Supreme Court has handed the Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo seven days to file her written response in a suit challenging Ghana’s military cooperation agreement with the United States of America.

The Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Brogya Genfi is in court asking that the agreement be nullified as the ratification by Parliament, in their opinion, is unconstitutional.

The defence agreement allows the US military and civilian personnel access to certain facilities in Ghana and provide them privileges, exemptions and immunities equivalent to those accorded to the administrative and technical staff of a diplomatic mission under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of April 18, 1961.

Ghana is also expected to benefit from aid package in excess of $20 million from the USA in the areas of training and grant.

But, in the suit, Mr. Genfi says the agreement is invalid because the President of Ghana failed to execute the agreement as prescribed by Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution before sending it to Parliament for ratification.

The writ filed on Monday, March 26, 2018 has the Attorney General Gloria Akuffo and Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul as the first and second defendants.

According to Mr Gyamfi, the two government appointees breached several laws in their bid to have the controversial Ghana-US military agreement ratified.

    He is demanding nine reliefs from the court including;

“A declaration that the Minister of Defence acted in contravention of articles 58 (1), 75 and 93 (2) of the 1992 Constitution when he laid or caused to be laid before Parliament an unexecuted draft of the supposed defence cooperation agreement for ratification under Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution.”

The NDC member said neither the Executive of the legislature has the power to enter or ratify a treaty that seeks to oust the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in matters of interpretation of international agreements.

Even though the agreement was ratified amidst drama and chaos, Mr Gyamfi wants the justices to annul the agreement.

A Principal State Attorney who represented the AG on Thursday made an application for extension of time to enable the AG to file her response.

Justice Gabriel Pwamang, who is hearing the case as a sole Judge handed the AG seven days to file the statement of case.

  • FIFA fines Mexico federation $10K over anti-gay chants in Germany match

FIFA on Wednesday handed the Mexico Football Federation a $10,400 fine for “discriminatory and insulting chants” during a World Cup game against Germany.

The FIFA disciplinary committee handed down the 10,000 Swiss francs fine (the equivalent of $10.4k U.S.) on Wednesday for chants directed at Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
A source also told ESPN’s Rene Tovar that if the chants continue during matches, stadium security would begin to identify and remove the offending fans from the stands.

Mexican fans have long shouted the word, which gay rights groups argue is anti-gay.

“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) with a fine of CHF 10,000 for the misconduct of a group of Mexican fans (cf. art. 67 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code) in relation to discriminatory and insulting chants during the first half of the 2018 FIFA World Cup match played between Germany and Mexico,” FIFA wrote.

FIFA also sanctioned the Serbian Football Association $10,000 “for the display of an offensive and political banner by Serbian fans during the match played between Serbia and Costa Rica.”

The Mexican Football Federation, which began a campaign ahead of the World Cup to end the chant, was sanctioned 12 times for anti-gay slurs during the World Cup qualifying campaign, receiving warnings for the first two offences and fines for 10 more.

The chant was also widely heard at Mexico games in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when FIFA took no action, but the governing body has since launched a clampdown. Other Latin American teams, including Argentina and Chile, have also been fined.

“The decision was passed after a thorough assessment of the relevant match reports, the FMF’s precedents and the evidence provided, which included videos of the incidents as well as examples of certain sustainable actions taken by the FMF to raise awareness among its supporters,” FIFA said. “Moreover, the Disciplinary Committee gave a warning to the FMF, who may face additional sanctions in case of repeated infringements of this type.”

Although the Mexican team has appealed before for an end to the chants — the players even released a video on the subject in 2016 — some supporters have not relented.

Mexico striker Javier Hernandez on Wednesday appealed to his country’s football fans to stop their anti-gay chanting at World Cup matches, arguing it could lead to further fines from FIFA.

Hernandez posted a message on Instagram on Wednesday asking fans to end their derogatory chants during their opponents’ goal kicks.

“To all Mexican fans in the stadiums, don’t shout ‘pu’,” Hernandez said. “Let’s not risk another sanction.”

Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Marco Fabian made a similar plea via his social media on Wednesday, retweeting the Mexico Federation’s educational campaign to end the use of the chant, along with this message.

“Yes, we all know that it is not an anti-gay slur nor is it insulting. The intent is not to offend and it is meant to be teasing and part of Mexican folklore. But we also know that when we as Mexicans put our minds to something, we accomplish it. And I know that our Mexican fans in Russia will be abstaining from using this chant, correct?”

Thousands of Mexican fans have flooded into Russia for the World Cup and some chanted the abuse during the match against Germany on Sunday, prompting FIFA to announce disciplinary procedures earlier this week.

Mexico caused a major shock by beating Germany 1-0 in their opening game in Group F. They next play South Korea on Saturday. FIFA is employing three specialist observers at each World Cup match to report discriminatory behaviour by spectators.

  • Fall of cedi risks disrupting Ghanas financial market – Chamber of Commerce warns

The Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry is warning of a severe crisis in the private sector should the government fail in dealing with the fall of the Ghana cedi against major currencies.

The Ghana cedi, which depreciated against the US dollar by 3 to 4 per cent has shot up the cost of doing business in the country.

Speaking to JoyBusiness at the launch of the Chamber Business Awards 2017, President of the Chamber, Nana Dr Appiagyei Dankawoso I, stated that government through the regulator must intervene with some measures to absorb the shock of this trend.

He said, “Most of our trading and investments as a chamber hovers around the strength of the cedi. Anytime there is a fall, businesses become so much worried.

“It is the final consumer that suffers and it also affects the general economy of the country. There should be some level of interim measures. There must be some absorbers that have to be taken as a measure to make sure that at least the cedi is stabilized,” he said.

Between May and June this year, the local currency has experienced a 0.7 per cent depreciation and now sells at GHS4.44 to $1.

  • Wholesale banking licenses injurious to industry Nana Otuo

Banking Consultant, Nana Otuo Acheampong has implored Savings and Loans companies to exercise restraint in their quest to operate as banks as the implications could be dire.

The Ghana Association of Savings and Loans Companies earlier warned that unfavorable conditions in the industry is compelling most of their members to pursue universal banking status.

The companies are pursuing the move even though they do not have the capital strength to become banks.

A development, some analysts believe has partly contributed to the challenges facing the financial sector.

Nana Otuo Acheampong also maintains a wholesale leap unto banks could affect the financial industry negatively.

“Presently, with their level of capital, they will be able to quote the security because the way our cheque issue works is that once you are in clearing, when your cheque comes, whether there is money in your account or not the regulator has to pay the money and so you have to have a resizeable level of capital,” he explained.

“That is why I said once their minimum capital is increased to a reasonable level like 50 million, then they may be considered and administered into clearing” he added.

He further advises the finance institutions to equally consider lending to microfinance companies as there are opportunities for such category of persons within the financial system.

“They should not rush, because there is always room for the micro sector as well. Not everybody wants a hundred million loan, there are people who want the thousands also. So that is a niche market and they should concentrate on that,” he advised.
