Daniel Asiedu, the prime suspect in the murder of J.B. Danquah Adu has confessed that he was contracted to kill the lawmaker.

Daniel Asiedu on Wednesday said that he will name his contractors when the time comes and that they are officials of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Asiedu’s confession in court came as a surprise. When the case was called Wednesday morning, he raised his hand and indicated that he had something to say.

When he was offered the opportunity, he confessed that he was contracted to kill the former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North.

J.B. Danquah Adu was killed in his house at East Legon in February 2015. Daniel Asiedu is currently facing a committal process at the District Court for a murder trial at the High Court.

The Attorney General will therefore take account of his confession at the District Court and add it to the bill of indictment for the court to consider whether the state has a prima facie case against Asiedu for him to be tried for murder. It is at the High Court that the jury will determine whether Asiedu is guilty.

  • NPP contracted me to kill JB Danquah Suspect confesses

One of the accused standing trial in the murder of former Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North Constituency Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu, Daniel Asiedu, has told an Accra District Court that he was hired by some persons in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to commit the crime.

He said his “contractors” told him to rather say the National Democratic Congress (NDC) contracted him when asked about the crime.

He made the confession in court on Wednesday.

He told the court, presided over by judge Arit Nsemoh, that he was told to execute the plot after which he would be given whatever he asked for.

But he said after his arrest, nothing had been heard or seen from his “contractors”.

He confessed that only one person from the NPP has visited him since his arrest and stands ready to reveal the names of the persons who contracted him if he is asked to.

TV3s correspondent Godfred Tanam reported that after the judge asked whether he was making the confession because of the promise or out of a threat, Daniel Asiedu, nicknamed Sexy Don Don, said he is making the confession because he is now a changed person and wants the truth to be out.

The judge told the accused that he cannot be released for confessing because he is in a committal stage of trial.

She said he can only provide evidence on what he is saying at the High Court, where proper trial will take place.

But he was asked to return to think about what he has told the court, and to consider whether to add more or retract them.

Meanwhile, the second accused, Vincent Bosso, told the court that he knew nothing about the case and has been frustrated since his arrest.

He says his arrest has hampered efforts to take care of his only son as he has been rejected by family, who see him as a criminal.

  • Mahama can’t ‘deceive’ us again- NDC members

Following former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge at the last Unity walk in the Volta region that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will prioritise development in that region, some party executives have aptly replied him.
“Former President Mahama must remember that we are not forgetful that he gave similar promises during the previous campaigns in 2012 and 2016, which never materialised.” Wisdom Kukubor, a Communication Officer in the Ketu South Constituency wing of the NDC who was speaking in a news conference in Denu said the former President must explain what led to their failure to fulfil earlier promises before making fresh ones.
Flanked by other executives, including Christopher Mensah, a branch Chairman, Mr. Kukubor said the promise was just a ploy by the former President to win the support of Voltarians ahead of his declaration to run for the flagbearership again. “The people of this great region, who are a proud backbone of the NDC largely boycotted the 2016 election because of the betrayals suffered under the previous administration. Among the many painful memories, we remember how Mr Mahama had in 2012 promised to fix our roads and secured our votes for it, and yet did nothing after he became President.
“We remember how in 2016, when he realised that he could lose the election, he sent his brother, Ibrahim Mahama to heap gravel on the Toshiba-Dafienu road at the last hour to fool us. “As he would find out later however, the people of the Volta region were not fooled at all, which is why they largely refused to turn up to vote at the polls,” Mr. Kukubor said.
He added that the people of Volta had not lost hope in the NDC, but in the former president and his promise to prioritise Volta in his next term was an admission that he failed Volta when he had the opportunity to rule the country.  “If you admit that you failed us when you had the opportunity, then why don’t you make way for someone else to come?” Wisdom Kukubor asked.
He said the promise by President Mahama was quite an affront to the intelligence of Voltarians and urged members of the NDC in the region to rethink before selecting the next Presidential candidate.
According to the Communications officer other candidates like the Second Deputy Speaker, Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, who has made it plain that he would make the party the pivot to his administration if elected could be the best alternative.
On his part, Mr Christopher Mensah said it was regrettable that the NDC lost power in the 2016 general election, but blamed it on the Former President who alienated true party members. “We remember how President Mahama, after ignoring our calls for development in Volta, later came around to show us videos of other places, especially the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions where he had built a lot of infrastructure for the people.
We are shocked, that he admited today that Voltarians are also Ghanaians who deserve development; but isn’t it interesting that he came to that grand realisation only after he led us into opposition?”

  • Include financial education in basic school curricula Dr Asubonteng

Dr Maranda Asubonteng, a psychologist, has called for the inclusion of financial education into basic school curricula to imbibe in the younger generation financial management knowledge and skills. He said knowledge in good financial management has the potential to eliminate the challenge of poverty and build the capacity of the youth to generate and sell ideas. This would also place them in a better position and reduce their over-reliance on government for formal employment. Good and proper financial management skills, he said, would also enhance grant writing and proposal skills of the youth.
Dr Asubonteng, the Chief Executive Officer of the International Goal Achievement Science, (IGASP), made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a workshop on group dynamics and accountability held in Sunyani. IGASP, is a local NGO, linked with the National Financial Education Council in the United States and works to promote the science of creating wealth through occupational means. The day’s workshop was organised by Action Aid Ghana (AAG), an international NGO and attended by about 50 members of Activista drawn from the various districts in the Brong-Ahafo Region. Activista is a global youth network established by AAG involving more than 50 partners and thousands of volunteers in more than 25 countries.
It provides opportunities for the youth to engage in the fight for social justice and poverty alleviation. Dr Asubonteng expressed regret that many businesses were collapsing because many entrepreneurs lacked basic knowledge in financial management thus it is imperative to promote financial education. He said if financial management was made an examinable subject in basic schools, it would instil discipline in the younger generation and develop their capacity to handle and use money judiciously. Madam Melody Azinim, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Programme Manager of AAG, advised the youth to take advantage of the social media and showcase their potentials.
The youth must also mobilise themselves, identify their developmental needs and use the social media as a tool to portray such challenges. Nana Afram Denkyira, a Programme Officer at the AAG, said there is the need to equip the participants with relevant knowledge, attitude and skills aimed at inspiring and empowering them to develop effective teams and work collectively. He said there is the need for the youth to remain focused, plan ahead and work towards their goals to become useful adults.
Nana Denkyira advised the youth to shun unhealthy lifestyles that could truncate their future and channel their exuberances into productive ventures.

  • VOLTIC creates awareness on plastic recycling

Voltic Ghana Limited (VOLTIC), as part of activities commemorating World Environment Day, has undertaken a beautification project using plastic bottles, to create awareness on innovative alternatives for plastic use.
The project dubbed “Voltic Beats Plastic Pollution”, saw some Voltic employees, volunteers from Mckingtorch Creative, a plastic recycling organisation; and members of the Ga North Municipality using plastic bottles to fabricate a fence around the Ofankor roundabout, create a Christmas tree and flower pots as well as garden chairs.
Ms. Joyce Ahiadorme, the Public Affairs and Communication Manager of Voltic, said plastic management was a shared responsibility and as a result, the management of Voltic Limited has decided to reach out to communities, starting from the Ga North Municipality to sensitize and educate people on the need to recycle plastic waste in their environment.
“We need to be able to educate people and sensitise them about the alternative ways they can use plastics; even though this will not solve the plastic problem permanently, it will get them exposed to beat plastic pollutions,” she stressed.
She said it was up to the consumer to realise that once the environment was not clean, there was the need to avoid polluting it more, since it affected lives, adding that, to beat plastic pollution people must first change their mind set and begin to recognise and utilise it as a resource.
She encouraged the government to put in measures to ensure that everybody did what society demanded and treat the environment as their homes.
Ms Humu Dilley Saeed, the Assembly member for the Ofankor Electoral Area, expressed gratitude to Voltic for introducing the initiative to the Municipality. She said “all citizens must ensure Ghana is clean and this can only be achieved as a result of a collective effort, therefore as a nation trying to combat plastic pollution, citizens must come together to ensure plastic waste is collected and recycled for a secondary use”.
Mrs Moira Nancy Ewa, the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Ga North Municipal Assembly, said plastic waste had become a nuisance and a challenge to manage in Ghana, therefore everyone needed to use the initiative to recycle plastic in their little ways.
She said the re-use, reduction and recycling of plastic, had been strategies employed in other countries to improve economic stability.  “We must also try and remain committed to collaborations geared towards sustainability of our environment and advance towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 of ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns,” she added.
