Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says the Black Stars have affirmed their position as a ‘powerhouse’ in African football after beating Kenya to top group F of the Nations Cup qualifiers.

Caleb Ekuban’s solitary goal on Saturday lifted the Black Stars ahead of the Harambee Stars as Ghana qualified for the AFrica Cup of Nations for the 22nd time.

  • New Zealand orders highest-level inquiry into mosque attack

New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern on Monday ordered an independent judicial inquiry into whether police and intelligence services could have prevented the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15.

Ardern said a royal commission, the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law was needed to find out how a single gunman was able to kill 50 people in an attack that shocked the world.

“It is important that no stone is left unturned to get to how this act of terrorism occurred and how we could have stopped it,” she told reporters.

New Zealand’s spy agencies have faced criticism in the wake of the attack for concentrating on the threat from Islamic extremism.

Instead, the victims were all Muslims and the massacre was allegedly carried out by a white supremacist fixated on the belief that there was an Islamist plot to “invade” Western countries.

“One question we need to answer is whether or not we could or should have known more,” Ardern said.

“New Zealand is not a surveillance state … but questions need to be answered.”

Ardern ruled out New Zealand re-introducing the death penalty for accused gunman Brenton Tarrant, 28, who was arrested minutes after the attack on the mosques and has been charged with murder.

She said details of the royal commission were being finalised, but it would be comprehensive and would report in a timely manner.

It will cover the activities of intelligence services, police, customs, immigration and any other relevant government agencies in the lead-up to the attack.

The gunman livestreamed the attack online, although New Zealand has outlawed the footage as “objectionable content”.

Ardern reiterated her believe it should not be aired.

“That video should not be shared. That is harmful content,” she said when questioned about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan showing excerpts of the footage at campaign rallies for local elections this month.

Erdogan had angered both Wellington and Canberra with campaign rhetoric about anti-Muslim Australians and New Zealanders being sent back in “coffins” like their grandfathers at Gallipoli, a World War I battle.

New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters travelled to Istanbul to meet Erdogan and address an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Peters said OIC members were full of praise for the support New Zealand had offered its small, tight-knit Muslim community in the wake of the killings.

“A number of them were weeping and sobbing at the demonstration (of support) by non-Muslim New Zealand towards the Muslim victims,” he told reporters.

“It was dramatic and I was told by countless ministers that they’ve never seen anything of that type.”

The body of an Indian student killed in the Christchurch mosque attacks, meanwhile, was returned Monday to her grieving family in Kochi, where relatives remembered a bright young woman dedicated to her studies.

Ansi Alibava, 25, was the first of at least five Indians shot dead on March 15 to be repatriated.

The family planned to hold a funeral ceremony for the masters student in their nearby hometown of Kodungallur.

  • Claims of a rift between Ayew and Gyan banished with hearty chat

Asamoah Gyan was involved in a hearty chat with deputy Andre Ayew after Ghana’s 1-0 win over Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

This to some extent put to an end reports that the two are at loggerheads because of the armband.

Gyan, who plays for Turkish side Kayserispor, was not invited for the qualifier but showed up at the stadium to lend his support to the team.

  • Mueller report: Trump cleared of conspiring with Russia

US President Donald Trump’s campaign did not conspire with Russia during the 2016 election, a summary of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report says.

The allegation clouded the first two years of Mr Trump’s presidency and his allies see the report’s finding as a boost to his re-election chances.

But Attorney General William Barr’s summary is inconclusive as to whether Mr Trump obstructed justice.

Opposition Democrats are demanding full access to Mr Mueller’s report.

Having repeatedly described the inquiry as a witch hunt, Mr Trump said it was an “illegal takedown that failed”.

Despite the inconclusiveness of the report regarding his alleged obstruction of justice, the president said it constituted “complete and total exoneration”.

The report was the culmination of two years of investigation by Mr Mueller which saw some of the president’s closest former aides prosecuted and, in some cases, imprisoned, although not on charges related to the alleged Russian collusion.

    What does the summary say?

“The special counsel did not find that any US person or Trump campaign official conspired or knowingly co-ordinated with Russia,” Mr Barr writes.

On the issue of whether justice was obstructed, Mr Mueller’s report says: “While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

In his summary, Mr Barr said the report “ultimately determined not to make a traditional prosecutorial judgment”.

There was, he adds, insufficient evidence “to establish that the president committed an obstruction-of-justice offence”.

    How have Trump’s allies responded?

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway sent the president “congratulations” on Twitter, saying: “Today you won the 2016 election all over again. And got a gift for the 2020 election.”

“They’ll never get you because they’ll never ‘get’ you.”

Mr Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said the report had been better than he had expected while Republican Senator Mitt Romney welcomed the “good news”, tweeting that it was now “time for the country to move forward”.

    What are the Democrats saying?

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement that Mr Barr’s letter “raises as many questions as it answers” and called for access to the full report.

“For the president to say he is completely exonerated directly contradicts the words of Mr Mueller and is not to be taken with any degree of credibility,” the statement said.

Congressman Jerry Nadler, the Democratic Chair of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, emphasised that Mr Trump had not been cleared of obstructing justice.

“Barr says that the president may have acted to obstruct justice, but that for an obstruction conviction, ‘the government would need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a person, acting with corrupt intent, engaged in obstructive conduct’.”

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, said that while there was a lack of evidence to support “a prosecutable criminal conspiracy”, questions remained over whether Mr Trump had been compromised.

    What happens next?

The release of the report’s key findings on Sunday could mark the start of a lengthy battle to see the entire Mueller report made public.

Whenever further details are handed to Congress, Democrats may mount legal challenges if it is anything less than the entire report.

Jerry Nadler said he would ask Mr Barr to testify in front of the House Judiciary Committee “in the near future” over “very concerning discrepancies and final decision making at the Justice Department”.

About a dozen other investigations are continuing into Mr Trump’s activities. These include a federal inquiry in New York into possible election law violations by the Trump campaign and his businesses, and possible misconduct by the Trump inaugural committee.

Congress is also continuing its own inquiries, mostly in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.

A very good day for Trump

Attorney General Barr summarises, mostly in his own words, the conclusions of the special counsel’s investigation. In one key line, however, he directly quotes the report.

“The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or co-ordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.”

There, in Robert Mueller’s own words, is the end result of nearly two years of work, 2,800 subpoenas, hundreds of search warrants and countless hours of interviews. There were “multiple offers” of help from “Russian-affiliated individuals” to the Trump campaign, but they never took the bait.

There was, as Donald Trump might say, “no collusion”. At least, no evidence of it was unearthed.

The obstruction of justice component is a murkier matter. The decision of whether to charge Mr Trump with interference with the various investigations wasn’t Mr Mueller’s. Saying it involved “difficult issues”, the former FBI director punted.

Instead, Mr Barr – in consultation with Department of Justice staff – decided not to prosecute, in part because there was no apparent underlying crime to obstruct.

Make no mistake, today was a very good day for Mr Trump.

While a bevy of inquiries into his presidency will grind on, the shadow of Mr Mueller’s investigation – hovering over the White House since May 2017 – has been lifted.

  • Big Sean talks about struggle with anxiety and depression

Big Sean has spoken about his struggle with anxiety and depression, which forced him to cancel a tour in 2018.

Sean revealed that he went through a difficult period last year around his 30th birthday.

He says that around that time, he realised he was facing issues which needed “special attention” and had therapy for his problems.

“I wasn’t feeling like myself and I couldn’t figure out why,” he said on Instagram.

“I just felt lost – and I don’t know how I got there.”

He posted three videos on his social media, in which he spoke openly about his experiences.

He previously scrapped a US tour last year partly because of his mental health, telling Billboard magazine at the time: “I never really took the time out to nurture myself.”

Sean said on Instagram that he has used meditation to cope with anxiety and depression since he was 17 years old, but needed to get professional help.

    ‘It all started with me’

He started therapy, which he says helped him get “clarity” on his situation and was able to focus on relationships which had meaning in his life.

“I had a lot of toxic relationships around me,” he says.

“Even the relationship with my mum was getting to a point where we weren’t talking like that.

“It was just weird because it had never been like that with me and her.”

Sean says that his mental health issues meant that he lost interest in making music, saying it began to feel “like a job”. “I realised that it all started with me,” he says. “I couldn’t point the finger at anyone else, I had to point it at myself, nurture those relationships that were important to me but most importantly nurture the relationship with myself.” Sean says that spending time by himself, doing activities he enjoyed alone, helped. He even went skydiving to try and improve his mental health. “In the midst of that I definitely rediscovered myself and found a whole new energy and me being the source of it – not somebody else,” he says. “Put the energy back into yourself, be clear about what you want to do and just know that it all translates to happiness.” Sean released his fourth album, I Decided, in February 2017 but in his Instagram post suggests that his improved mental health may mean new music is on its way. “I started getting back to making music and it started being fun again and I’m making the best music of my life,” he says. “It feels good to be back at a higher level.”

  • Ebola cases in DR Congo exceed 1,000

The number of people known to have contracted Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has exceeded 1,000, making the current outbreak the second largest ever recorded, aid workers say.

More than 629 people have died since last August. New cases have increased sharply over the past week, with 58 new cases reported – the highest number in a week in 2019.

A leading aid group, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), said DR Congo had reached a “tragic milestone”.

“We are already almost seven months into this outbreak and at this stage we should be seeing the case rate declining, not on the rise,” it said.

“With an optimistic outlook this outbreak is predicted to last another six months – but realistically we could be looking towards another year of fighting this disease,” the IRC added.

Insecurity and mistrust have hampered the work of health workers.

Several treatment facilities have been attacked and infectious patients have been let out.

There are concerns that some people are staying away from treatment centres, making it difficult to prevent further spread of the disease.

  • Mali’s army chief sacked after 134 killed

Mali’s President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has replaced the army chief of staff and the head of the country’s land forces – a day after 134 Fulani villagers were killed by a rival ethnic group in the Mopti Region of the country.

The government says it is banning a militia which it says was behind Saturday’s attack – the latest in a series of deadly killings.

The first video footage from Ogossagou village shows the smouldering remains of people’s homes – the mud walled huts collapsed after they were torched by the attackers.

There are burnt out vehicles and on one side of the village the body of a Fulani child no more than two years old.

A local mayor says pregnant women were cut open with machetes and people were thrown down wells.

The Malian government says it is banning the Dan Na Ambassagou militia or self-defence group, which it says carried out the attack.

But jihadists are also active in central Mali and Fulanis have carried out attacks too.

It’s a complex conflict which the Malian army has failed to deal with.

  • Brexit: Cabinet to meet amid pressure on May

Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to update ministers on her Brexit strategy when she chairs a meeting of her cabinet this morning.

It comes after a weekend of speculation about her leadership and claims of a plot to oust her – something senior ministers have denied.

Read: Vote on Theresa May’s deal may not happen next week

There have been suggestions that naming a date for her departure as PM could boost support for her Brexit deal.

But Downing Street has refused to be drawn on Mrs May’s future.

Read: Brexit: ‘Tired’ public needs a decision, says Theresa May

The Sun newspaper has used its front page to urge Mrs May to set a date for her resignation to win over reluctant Tories and the Democratic Unionist Party in order to bolster the chances of her withdrawal agreement passing in a third vote.

Her deal has been overwhelmingly rejected in the Commons twice, and it remains unclear whether she will bring it back a third time this week after she wrote to MPs saying she would only do so if there was “sufficient support”.

Conservative MP Nigel Evans told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that that Mrs May should get her deal over the line first, and then resign so that there can be an “orderly replacement” of the prime minister, with no need for an interim caretaker.

Mr Evans, a joint executive secretary of the 1922 Committee, added: “Clearly a number of people do not want the prime minister anywhere near the next phase of negotiations, which is the future trading negotiation between ourselves and the EU.”

The cabinet meeting later follows intense speculation over the weekend about Mrs May’s premiership following a week in which she was forced to ask the EU for an extension to Article 50, and criticised for blaming the delay to Brexit on MPs.

On Sunday, amid reports of a plot to replace Mrs May with a caretaker prime minister, two cabinet ministers touted as potential successors said they fully backed the PM.

As senior figures dismissed talk of a “coup”, Mrs May summoned leading opponents of her deal to Chequers, her country retreat, to assess whether there is enough support for it to bring it back to the Commons this week.

But after lengthy talks with prominent Brexiteers – including Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Iain Duncan Smith – there was little sign of an immediate breakthrough.

This afternoon MPs are expected to back a plan to carve out parliamentary time for a series of so-called indicative votes on alternatives to Mrs May’s deal, prompting concern in No 10.

As many as six other options, in addition to Mrs May’s deal, could be put to votes to see which are most popular.

Conservative MP Sir Oliver Letwin, who is spearheading the move, told the Today programme that once Mrs May knows what it would take to get a majority vote, it would help her find “a way forward in principle”.

Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay warned on Sunday that the risk of a general election would increase if MPs took control of parliamentary proceedings and brought about a “constitutional collision”.

But Chancellor Philip Hammond said “one way or another” MPs would be given the opportunity this week to decide what it is in favour of, though he would not confirm whether Tories would be given a free vote on the options.

Boris Johnson has described some of the suggested options – including a Norway-style close relationship with the EU – as “catastrophic” in an article in the Daily Telegraph.

Accusing Mrs May of “bottling” Brexit, the former foreign secretary said the only argument for backing what he called her “rotten deal” was if every other option was worse.

Meanwhile, foreign office minister Mark Field said he would support revoking Article 50 – the two year process for leaving the EU – if it became an option in the event Mrs May’s deal was defeated and free votes granted for indicative votes.

    What’s happening this week?

Monday: MPs will debate the Brexit next steps and a number of amendments – possible alternatives – to the government plan will be put to a vote. The most important of these is the indicative votes plan.

Tuesday: Theresa May could bring her withdrawal deal back for the so-called third meaningful vote. But the government says it won’t do that unless it’s sure it has enough support to win.

Wednesday: This is when indicative votes would be held – we don’t know yet whether MPs will be free to vote how they want or be directed along party lines. The chances of any genuine cross-party consensus being achieved are not high.

Thursday: A second possible opportunity for meaningful vote three. The prime minister may hope that Brexiteers will finally decide to throw their weight behind her deal because indicative votes have shown that otherwise the UK could be heading for the sort of softer Brexit they would hate.

Friday: This was the day the UK was meant to leave the EU. The earliest that will now happen is 12 April.

  • Deposits increase at GN Savings as local & regional banking enjoys success

Management of GN Savings says customer confidence is gradually being renewed in them due to the successes the company has been recording in recent times.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Issah Adam, the recent successes can be attributed to the measures the financial institution has put in place to ensure that customers of the company are served better.

Read: Ghana Commodity Exchange signs MoU with Barclays Bank

According to Mr Adam, the difficulties GN Savings encountered as a result of the recent banking crisis demanded that they reviewed operations of the company and adopt measures that will secure the interest of depositors. This he says, necessitated the introduction of the LRB (Local, Regional Banking) concept in December 2018 which he says has chalked considerable success bringing life to most of their banking halls dotted around the country.

To him, LRB is simply a means to serve people better while the shareholders of the financial institution made efforts to inject more capital into the business to address the liquidity challenges they are currently facing.

Read: GN Bank customers frustrated with hindrance in accessing funds, declare demo

“Today, we want you to know about the strategy we have adopted to guarantee unlimited withdrawals of your deposits when the need arises. We call it LRB (Local, Regional Banking). Since we started LRB, in November 2018, we have chalked some successes. LRB assures those who bring new deposits, get unrestricted access to their funds.”

“If a customer brings GH¢1,000 on Monday, they can come back on Tuesday and withdraw some or all of it. They can ask us to send part of the money to another branch in a different region and get the money there. It is working for traders, lawyers, students, companies with customers spread throughout the country and others. This has resulted in strengthening some of our branches, making them relatively liquid. It is bringing back customer confidence step by step, one person at a time,” he said.

With the new LRB concept, Mr Adam is challenging Ghanaians especially the market women who were doing business with the company in the recent past simply because GN Savings provided convenience to come and give it a try.

“We highly recommend this to everyone. Come and give this a trial. And enjoy safety and convenience. It remains a fact that GN Savings is the only licensed financial institution in many towns across Ghana”.

He used the opportunity to thank the Ghanaian banking public for their patience during the difficult days and promised that going forward, he was going to focus on customer driven-initiatives that will ensure that whoever that saves at GN Savings and Loans leave their banking halls fully satisfied with the services rendered them.

With close to 300 locations dotted across the length and breadth of the country, GN Savings provides the safest means of transferring money as one can deposit money in Accra and readily have it available in other locations. This, some market women say have drastically reduced losses during highway robberies and other thefts while on the road to the market centres.

It will be recalled that already the like of actors Abraham Davis, popularly known as Salinko, Micheal Afrane, and a few others have contested for political offices but unfortunately, they failed to win.

  • Do something about ‘senseless’ road accidents, don’t just talk Otabil to ‘leadership’

The founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil has urged “our leadership” to act decisively to stop the carnage on Ghana’s roads and not just talk about it.

In a sermon on Sunday, 24 March 2019, the motivational speaker wondered why so many people should die on roads of a “small” country like Ghana.

    Read: Ghastly accidents shocking NDC

The ICGC head pastor’s comments come two days after two separate road accidents one in the Bono East Region and the other in the Central Region claimed the lives of close to 70 people, 35 of whom were burnt beyond recognition.

“The sad thing is lives have been lost; people parents, children have died and people have lost their dear ones in a very senseless way.

“There is no need for anybody to die on the road. Ghana is a very small country, why should travelling be hazardous it is not good, and we shouldn’t allow that to happen”, Pastor Otabil said.

Read: Black Friday: Close to 90 perish in 2 separate accidents

“Our leadership”, he said, “should take note of that and not just talk about it but really do something and intervene”.

In his view, death should happen in unavoidable circumstances.

“When we hear that people have died, it should be unavoidable; that nothing could be done, and not when someone is innocently travelling on a journey”, he noted.

  • Government begins preparation towards implementation of RTI – Minister

Government has begun preparatory work ahead of the passage of the Right to Information Bill which is expected to be passed in Parliament this week.

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic has in good time completed the Consideration Stage of the RTI bill after several policy changes, amendments and months of rigorous debates.

“Even currently there are further new petitions asking for further amendments to provisions of the bill. However, Parliament is minded to pass the bill into law this week, and send it for Presidential assent soon thereafter,” he said at a press briefing Sunday.

According to him, the bill in its current form requires the establishment of Information Units in all public offices, recruitment and training of information officers to man these units.

The Ofoase Ayeribi MP said after the establishment of the RTI Commission and the completion of various administrative protocols will be budgeted for before the commencement of the next fiscal year.

“These are necessary to ensure that there will indeed be the infrastructure that can deliver on the RTI requests filed under this new law,” he said.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah said, “the new law will be a major addition to the credential of the country as a strong democracy and President Akufo-Addo who for many years has championed the cause of enhancing the frontiers of human rights.”

The government, through the Information Ministry, which will be the implementing ministry, has already commenced engagements in preparation of a roadmap for implementation, he disclosed.

“We ask all who have followed the entire process to join in heralding the final passage and to cooperate with us in its implementation,” he pleaded.

  • NPP, NDC accused of politicising nations fortunes

Chief Operations Officer of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for deliberately working towards politicising and sabotaging the fortunes of the nation.

“Both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party have failed in finding long term solutions to the yearly depreciation of the cedi against major international trading currency, particularly the dollar and I know that the two parties have conspired to politicise and sabotage the economy,” he alleged.

Mr Jackson made the allegation on a news analysis show, the Key Points, and accused the parties of politicising the cedi issue to gain political points instead of coming up with long term measures to deal with it.

He was speaking on the back of a news conference organised by the Minority on the economy, as well as the response from the government on the issue.

According to Mr Jackson, “the two parties are always quick to speak through the media on issues of depreciating cedi instead of coming together to dialogue and come up with plans with which the issue can be solved to prevent further recurrence.

“Each time the cedi depreciates in value, it is a signal telling us there is not enough dollars to fund what we want do, it is either we export more or we consume less dollars each time that signal happens.

“Both parties are quick to use the cedi as barometer or thermometer for political performance, the action is to jump in support of the cedi, sabotage economic signal that goes to all investors, producers, consumers to take decisions that will fix it in the long term.

“Investment decisions and issues bordering on the cedi cannot be taken within two months or short term as is done by the two parties, they must pay attention to cedi signals and plan along those lines, I think by jumping and celebrating any time the cedi slides, they are actually sabotaging our long term existence.

“I want all of them, whether the script was read by Dr Bawumia a year ago or the script is being read by Mr Forson, this time or whoever it is, it is the same script, it tells us we are ignoring the economic signal the cedi value is passing, and it totally ignores how to fix it in the long term,” Mr Jackson bemoaned.

  • Church of Pentecost Chairman takes a swipe at gloating preachers, greedy politicians

The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye has bemoaned the attitude of a section of Ghanaian leaders against the ways of God.

Apostle Nyamekye also condemned the attitude of some Ghanaian pastors who spend precious time preaching about their designer shoes and jackets they bought from Western countries to show their wealth, describing the act as shameful.

He told a packed church that it was equally shameful for chiefs to sell one parcel of land to ten people.

Apostle Nyamekye made these comments on Sunday when he addressed hundreds of member of his church, chiefs and politicians at the Asokwa Area Assembly in Kumasi during the church’s launch of its Environmental Care Campaign programme in Kumasi.

He did not stop there. The revered man of God said it was shameful for political leaders to go to Europe and others to borrow huge sums of money to build roads and social amenities for the citizens only to corrupt it for their personal benefits.

The man of God said although sometimes Ghanaians blame the politicians for the wrongs in the society, many directors at public institutions who are also church leaders are also perpetrators of corruption.

He observed that about 70 per cent of Ghanaians are believed to be Christians yet corruption was on the ascendency a situation he said was indicative of the fact that the corrupt society was dominated by Christians.

There, therefore, called for a complete change of mindset to free the system of corruption and selfishness.

The campaign which was launched in Accra last year bears the slogan for the next five years as “My Environment My Responsibility”.

Apostle Nyamekye told the congregation that the church, as part of its civic responsibility, is in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited to ensure that the environment is kept clean and ensure a green revolution in Ghana.

He said the Church of Pentecost will partner with government to provide facilities to decongest Ghana’s over-populated prisons and build CHPS compounds in selected communities.

The church will also drill boreholes in another partnership with World Vision also in some selected communities across the country.

He said God created the earth and handed to humans and demanded care of it, adding this divine mandate must never be overlooked.

The Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive, Akwanuassah Gyimah, said the government was grateful to the Church of Pentecost for their innovations over the years that has been very helpful to the country and urged them to keep it up.

He said government will continue to support the church and Zoomlion’s collaboration to ensure the country becomes attractive to tourists.

He warned Ghanaians to be careful of Ponzi schemes whereby they follow mouthwatering interest rates to loose their money to such schemes.

He explained that it was untrue for people to say that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, is collapsing banks for his Databank to thrive. Mr Gyimah said it was due to the recklessness in the banking sector that government demands the GHS400 million as protection cover so that when the unfortunate happens and those banks grounds government will use such money to support the depositors.

The Asokwa Municipal Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Maxwell O. Antwi in a presentation to the congregation said Zoomlion had diagnosed and prescribed the waste bin as a one-stop solution to Ghana’s waste problems.

He said the bin when adopted by everyone including government will provide jobs for the youth, enhance tourism, ensure a cleaner environment, protect Ghanaians from communicable diseases and so, therefore, save the Nationally Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from collapsing as fewer people will use the health facilities.

He urged government, civil society groups and the individual Ghanaian to embrace Zoomlion’s one million bin nationwide distribution project to own a waste bin to ensure household cleanliness.

Zoomlion had earlier promised One Household, One Bin project. Zoomlion had assured Ghanaians that Universal Plastic Product and Recycling Plant (UPPR), one its subsidiary, had started producing a bin to supply to clients nationwide — an initiative Ecobank Ghana had bought into. Ecobank Ghana provided $10 million in loans to the company for the project.

The Chief of Asokwa, Nana Fe Asamoah who was accompanied by Kaasehene and others was thankful for the partnership between the church and Zoomlion.

He urged that the Youth Employment Authority should always engage the youth who understand current trends of environmental sanitation to keep the environment clean, instead of engaging the aged who have not enough energy to do the work.

He believed Zoomlion’s work was commendable in his jurisdiction but added that there was always room for improvement.

  • Cedi depreciation causes fuel price hike for a second time in March

Some Major Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have slightly adjusted upward the prices of petrol and diesel.

Checks at various fuel stations showed that Shell and Total have increased the prices of petrol and diesel by six pesewas.

Read: Wrong policy choices cause of cedi depreciation – Minority

The two companies are selling a litre of petrol and diesel for GHS5.24 representing a 1.16 percentage increase from the previous price of GHS5.18.

This is the second increase in the prices of fuel in a month.

The Institute of Energy Security(IES) which predicted the increase has attributed the hikes to the recent depreciation of the cedi.

“Even though we have seen the currency pick up some strength against the dollar this came a little too late and way into the pricing window after BDCs and oil marketing companies have transacted their bills in the movement of products,” Mikdad Mohammed a Research Analyst at the IES told Citi Business News in an interview.

Read: Cement prices shoot up over Cedi Depreciation

The first increment, which occurred after the first pricing window in the first week of March was also attributed to the depreciation of the cedi and the increase in the cost of Brent Crude on the World market.

“We have been monitoring the market since the first pricing window in March which we projected that prices were picking up based on the cedi fundamentals of the market as we know them to be. You look at Brent crude price, finished product price, the cedi depreciation against the dollar and we look at stock level,” said Mikdad.

However a major state oil company, GOIL is yet adjusted its price.

OMCs like Allied and Glory Oil are also yet to increase their prices.

  • Driver and mate transporting wee crash to death on Accra-Kumasi road

A mini cargo truck carrying marijuana concealed in bags of charcoal crashed Saturday morning killing the driver and his conductor instantly.

The accident happened at about 5:00am on the Accra-Kumasi highway after the driver was said to have ignored a signal by some security personnel to stop at a checkpoint around Linda Dor Rest Stop.

Witnesses say while the driver was fleeing from the security personnel, he lost control of the truck as he negotiated a curve close to Anyinam in the Eastern Region, causing the truck to crash into another truck registered AS 992-S.

The truck carrying the marijuana and charcoal was mangled beyond repairs with some of its parts, including the front axle coming off onto the road. The other truck fell on its side blocking the road.

This resulted in a gridlock at the accident scene for almost an hour as no vehicle crossed from either side of the busy highway.

Police personnel arrived at the scene later to remove the bodies of the driver and his mate and also to tow both trucks from the scene to allow traffic to flow.

A search conducted on the vehicle, which many thought was transporting charcoal, revealed bags of marijuana, popularly known as week, had been concealed under the charcoal.

  • Trade war: US-China to resume face-to-face talks next week

US officials plan to travel to China next week to resume face-to-face talks aimed at ending a trade war between them, the White house has confirmed.

And Chinese officials will travel to the US for further talks in Washington in early April.

The US and China have imposed tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of one another’s goods over the past year.

A truce at a G20 meeting in December made way for talks, but negotiations have at times been rocky.

Despite that US President Donald Trump has cast talks in a positive light, saying they are going “very well”.

Read: Donald Trump asks China to lift all US agricultural tariffs

    Official parties

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will fly to Beijing to start talks with Chinese Vice-Premier Liu He on Thursday, 28 March.

The US principals will be accompanied by deputy trade representative Jeffrey Gerrish and other senior officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative and the Department of the Treasury.

The Chinese delegation led by Mr Liu will visit the US on 3 April with the aim of closing a deal by late April.

The talks have taken longer than some had expected, with officials at times making contradictory comments on their progress.

Previous US and China talks broke up without a deal on 15 February, with the US warning “very difficult issues” remained unresolved.

Even though by the end of the month Mr Trump said the two sides were “very very close” to signing a trade agreement, a deal has not yet been forthcoming.

He also delayed a 1 March deadline for raising tariffs last month citing the progress being made.

    What’s being discussed?

The US accuses China of stealing intellectual property from American firms, forcing them to transfer technology to China.

Washington wants Beijing to make changes to its economic policies, which it says unfairly favour domestic companies through subsidies and other support, and wants China to buy more US goods to rein in a lofty trade deficit.

China accuses the US of launching the largest trade war in economic history and is unlikely to embrace broader structural changes, which are seen by some as a way to contain its rise.

Important sticking points in negotiations include how to enforce a deal and the pace at which the US and China will roll back tariffs imposed over the past year, the Wall Street Journal said.

Read: Donald Trump asks China to lift all US agricultural tariffs

Chinese officials say President Xi Jinping does not want to participate in a summit with Mr Trump unless the main issues in the trade talks are agreed to avoid a situation where Mr Trump could walk away at the last minute, according to the Financial Times.

    What’s at stake?

Failure to achieve a deal would likely see the US more than double the 10% tariffs on $200bn of Chinese goods and impose fresh tariffs.

Mr Trump has in the past threatened to tax all of Chinese goods going into the US.

The US has already imposed tariffs on $250bn (£188.6bn) worth of Chinese goods, and China has retaliated with duties on $110bn of US products.

Mr Trump has also threatened further tariffs on an additional $267bn worth of Chinese products – which would see virtually all of Chinese imports into the US become subject to these tariffs.

The damaging trade war has cast a shadow over global trade and is contributing to a slowdown in the world economy.

  • Ronaldo’s Portugal return ends in draw

Reigning champions Portugal were held to a frustrating goalless draw in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Ukraine as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the side.

Ronaldo had missed the past six internationals after Portugal were knocked out in the World Cup last 16.

Ukraine keeper Andriy Pyatov made two strong saves to deny Ronaldo and also kept out Andre Silva’s curling effort.

Portugal had 18 shots in Lisbon while Ukraine managed just two.

William Carvalho thought he had put Portugal in front with a close-range header after 16 minutes but it was ruled out for offside.

There was also a penalty appeal from the hosts in stoppage time when substitute Dyego Sousa appeared to be bundled over in the box as he tried to get on the end of Ronaldo’s low cross.

Portugal will host Serbia on Monday in Lisbon. Luxembourg beat Lithuania 2-1 in Friday’s other Group B match.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the Euro 2020 finals but if Portugal were to miss out, they are guaranteed a play-off place after reaching the Nations League semi-finals.

  • Sterling scores hat-trick as England thrash chech

Raheem Sterling scored his first England hat-trick as their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign started in hugely impressive fashion as they outclassed the Czech Republic at Wembley.

Manager Gareth Southgate gave Jadon Sancho his first international start and Borussia Dortmund’s 18-year-old repaid his faith with a fine display.

But it was Sterling who stole the show as England built on the development that saw them reach the World Cup semi-finals in Russia and the finals of the inaugural Nations League.

Sancho showed his quality with a perfect cross for the stretching Sterling to open the scoring after 24 minutes and captain Harry Kane added the second in first-half stoppage time after the Manchester City forward was bundled over by two Czech Republic defenders.

Read: Chelsea whiz-kid Hudson-Odoi breaks 64-year-old record in England victory

England survived minor scares at the start of the second half but reasserted their vast superiority when Sterling scored on the turn just after the hour and completed his hat-trick six minutes later when his 20-yard shot deflected in off Ondrej Celustka.

Sterling was then given a standing ovation as he was replaced by debutant Callum Hudson-Odoi, with another of England’s young brigade Declan Rice having already been given his first Three Lions cap as replacement for Dele Alli.

And Hudson-Odoi, making his England debut before his first Premier League start for Chelsea, had a hand in the fifth when his shot was saved by keeper Jiri Pavlenka, only for Tomas Kalas to turn the rebound into his own net.

England’s victory sees them top Group A after Montenegro drew 1-1 against Bulgaria earlier on Friday.

When Sterling scored twice in England’s 3-2 win in Spain in October, their first win there for 31 years, the goals ended a three-year barren international sequence, stretching back 27 games.

No-one questioned Sterling’s ability or his attitude but this was clearly a flaw that needed addressing, although the feeling remained that he simply needed one goal to open the floodgates and replicate his club form at Manchester City.

    And so it has proved.

The burden, such as it was, lifted off Sterling’s shoulders on that stellar night in Seville and Wembley witnessed a player in prime form and confidence.

Sterling, in tandem with Kane and Sancho, terrorised the Czech Republic defence, stealing in for a poacher’s first goal before a driving run into the area brought England a penalty.

He showed great awareness to score his second on the turn before getting a deserved slice of good fortune with a deflection for his hat-trick.

Wembley rose to Sterling as he went off – his status as a player crucial to England’s future underlined.

Southgate gives a glimpse into the future

England manager Gareth Southgate said he would have no hesitation in blooding the talented band of youngsters he has at his disposal and he was as good as his word in this thrilling glimpse into the future.

Sancho, on his first start, was brimming with confidence, running at the Czech defence as he set up the first goal and only being denied a goal himself by a desperate goalline clearance after the break.

Rice was given a run-out for a taste of the full England experience while Hudson-Odoi also showed the fearlessness of youth in his cameo appearance.

This young group, alongside the established figures such as Kane and Sterling, delighted England’s fans and added to the growing excitement and expectation surrounding Southgate’s side.

Yes, the Czech Republic were mediocre opponents but England put them away with so much to spare that one can only admire this performance as Southgate’s men now prepare to face Montenegro in Podgorica on Monday.

  • This is the world’s busiest airport

Once again, Atlanta rules the world.

    At least its airport does.

More than 107 million passengers flew through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport last year, making it the busiest passenger airport in the world for the 21st year in a row.

Atlanta also saw a 3.3% increase in passenger traffic, according to Airports Council International’s preliminary world traffic report, which was released on March 13.

Globally, passenger traffic increased to 8.8 billion last year, an estimated 6% increase, while air cargo shipments increased by 3.2%.

Passenger traffic at the world’s 20 busiest airports grew by 4.7% in 2018 with more than 1.5 billion passengers flying through those airports.

Read: Thriving in Aviation – Meet Sylvia Baah; Emirates Airport Services Manager

“It is heartening to see that global passenger traffic growth has remained resilient in the face of an increasingly tense and challenging geopolitical climate,” said ACI World Director General Angela Gittens in a news release.

“With the cost of travel decreasing in many markets, and a burgeoning middle class growing in emerging markets, passenger traffic growth has remained irrepressible,” said Gittens.

“Indeed, ACI’s global medium-term forecasts reveal growth in demand for air services between 2018 to 2023 will grow by almost 30%. This means many national governments face the predicament of demand outstripping available airport infrastructure.”

But Gittens warned of the impact of protectionist policies around the world.

“Aviation is strongly linked to the global economy and to local development, however, and the protectionist rhetoric that has swept several Western countries will continue to restrain growth in the efficient flow of people, goods and services,” she said. “The ongoing trade war between the United States and several of its closest trade partners was a shock for the industry and global supply chains.”

    Major connecting hub

Atlanta continues to dominate the passenger market because of its location as a major connecting hub and port of entry into North America. It’s within a two-hour flight of 80% of the United States population of more than 300 million people.

The airport could be facing some bumps in the road, however, as the Georgia State senate recently voted to take over control of the airport from the city of Atlanta. It’s not clear that the Georgia House of Representatives will follow suit. The CEO of Delta Air Lines, the dominant tenant at the Atlanta airport, which is its hub, has expressed opposition to a state takeover.

Coming in second place, Beijing Capital International Airport passed the 100 million passengers mark in 2018, hitting nearly 101 million passengers and growing by 5.4%. Third place Dubai Airport handled 89 million passengers, increasing by only 1%. (Dubai was also the top-ranked airport for international passenger traffic, followed by London’s Heathrow Airport and Hong Kong International Airport.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport knocked Atlanta out of the No. 1 spot for most aircraft movements, which is airport language for takeoffs and landings. O’Hare handled nearly 904,000 movements in 2018. Atlanta handled more than 895,000 movements, and Los Angeles International Airport handled nearly 708,000 movements.

The top 20 airports for aircraft movements grew by 2.4% in 2018.

Hong Kong remains the largest air cargo airport, handling more than 5.1 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2018, a 1.4% increase over the previous year, followed by the Memphis International Airport (Tennessee, US) and China’s Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

    Rapid growth

India overtook Japan to become the world’s third-largest aviation market in terms of passenger throughput, behind the United States and China, according to a new ACI analysis. Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is evidence of that trend, leaping from 16th place to 12th place in the latest rankings, with 69.9 million passengers.

  • Importance of living a healthy lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle may mean something different from one person to the next. For some, health is defined by living a disease-free life. For others, healthy is being able to play with grandchildren or perhaps adhering to a weekly exercise schedule. Though the definition of healthy may differ between people, living a healthy lifestyle is a fundamental component to achieving your optimal mental and physical well-being.

    Disease Prevention

    (Image: -lvinst-/iStock/Getty Images)

An inactive lifestyle is a prominent cause for chronic diseases. Fortunately, many of these conditions are manageable and can be prevented by engaging in physical activity most days of the week and by being mindful of your food and lifestyle choices. Your diet also impacts your risk of developing diabetes. In a hallmark 16-year study published in March 2001 by “The New England Journal of Medicine,” participants who maintained a body mass index of 25 or less were found to have a significantly lower risk for developing type 2 diabetes compared to people with higher BMIs. Diets high in saturated fat, sugar and processed foods will quickly lead to added pounds. Being overweight increases your risk for high blood pressure, arthritis and certain forms of cancer.

    Longevity

    (Image: Rafal Olkis/iStock/Getty Images)

Focusing on a healthy lifestyle not only improves your quality of life, but it may add years as well. Authors of a June 2002 article published by the “American Journal of Public Health” concluded that smoking cessation before age 35 adds 6 to 8 years of life, while quitting at age 65 still adds 1 to 4 years of life expectancy. Being mindful of your diet, physical activity and stress levels allows you to effectively balance all aspects of your life and might increase your life span. Maintaining regular physical examinations aids with early detection and treatment of medical conditions. In addition, your doctor can recommend lifestyle habits that contribute to a longer and healthier life.

    Mental Health

    (Image: Purestock/Purestock/Getty Images)

Learning how to effectively deal with stress plays a significant role in maintaining your health. In a September 2012 article published by “Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine,” the authors concluded that leading a healthy lifestyle by engaging in regular physical activity and eating a balanced diet promotes low levels of stress, especially in women. Finding ways to release anxiety and handle daily pressures can keep stress levels low. Some people find participating in yoga or breathing techniques each morning helps them mentally prepare for the day ahead. Spending a few minutes in thoughtful reflection before going to bed may help improve your quality of sleep. And regular exercise increases your brain’s ability to memorize and learn.

  • Osaka left to regret ‘immaturity’ in loss to Hsieh

World number one Naomi Osaka berated herself for a lack of maturity and focus Saturday as she fell in three sets to Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei in the third round of the Miami Open.

The Japanese star was left floored by the battling instincts of the world number 27, who brilliantly came from a break down in the final two sets for a 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 victory, making amends for losing a dramatic encounter at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Osaka was dejected but, to her credit, laid bare her frustrations afterwards, insisting she lacked mental clarity and the ability to deal with the pressure of being the best in the world.

Read: Injured Williams pulls out of Miami Open

Hsieh, who completed one of the best wins of her career in two hours and 18 minutes, will now play Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki for a place in the quarter-finals and put to rest memories of being a set and 4-1 up at Melbourne before losing to eventual champion Osaka.

For two time Grand Slam winner Osaka, however, there was only severe disappointment.

Osaka had won the first set and gone up a break in the second when Hsieh rallied.

Osaka had complained about “getting too emotional” in a less than impressive second round win over Belgian Yanina Wickmayer on Friday and admitted history repeated itself at the Hard Rock Stadium just 24 hours later.

“I don’t know why this is happening,” the 21-year-old said.

    – Just not thinking –

“It’s unusual for me, I got ahead of myself. There were some times when I was returning I felt myself getting relaxed because I thought I would be able to serve it out anyway. I just need to focus more and know that I can’t just turn it on or off.

“I knew it would be a tough match playing her. She is unpredictable, hitting down the line when I thought she would go cross court.

“I was kind of immature because I was thinking too much, like everything was on my racquet.

“Of course I want to win every match and I think I have dealt with people always asking me if I am going to win because I have number one next to my name.

“I thought I was doing fine with that but I guess I am not,” she added. “I didn?t underestimate her, maybe overestimated myself. All the times I played her was three sets. In Australia, honestly, she should have won but I found a way to win it.

“I think there’s a difference between having confidence and getting ahead of yourself,” she said. “It wasn’t that I had a big head, I just wasn’t thinking about everything that was happening.”

Read: Naomi Osaka blames scrutiny over coaching split for Dubai defeat

There were, however, some pluses for the Japanese to take moving forward to the clay court season and preparations for the French Open.

“I think my serve has improved,” Osaka said. “I have been working on it and was counting on it today which is a big plus.

“She was being aggressive on my second serve which is something I need to work on.

“I think I played pretty good if I get over the fact that I lost.”

Hsieh, however, knew this result was possible and her delighted reaction at the end said it all.

“She has enough experience to stay strong and you saw that,” French coach Frederic Aniere, who has worked with Hsieh for the last two years and is also her boyfriend, told AFP.

“She was very happy but before this match she knew she could win. Yes it’s huge, but for her it’s not a big surprise.”

  • Brexit: May urged to quit to help deal pass

Theresa May could gain support for her Brexit deal if she promises to stand down as PM, senior Conservatives have told the BBC.

MPs in the party have said they might reluctantly back the agreement if they know she will not be in charge of the next stage of negotiations with the EU.

It comes as newspaper reports claim cabinet ministers are plotting a coup against her.

No 10 has dismissed reports that Mrs May could be persuaded to stand aside.

Read: Brexit march: Thousands join referendum protest

The prime minister has come under growing pressure to quit following a week in which she was forced to ask the EU for an extension to Article 50, and criticised for blaming the delay to Brexit on MPs.

It remains unclear whether she will bring her withdrawal agreement back to the Commons for a third vote next week, after she wrote to MPs saying she would only do so if there was “sufficient support” for it.

    ‘Caretaker leader’
According to reports in some of the Sunday papers, cabinet ministers are planning to oust Mrs May as prime minister and replace her with a “caretaker leader” until a proper leadership contest is held later in the year.

But there were differing accounts of who the preferred candidate is, with the Brexiteer and Remain wings of the party said to favour different interim leaders.

Read: $1.3 trillion and 7,000 finance jobs leaving Britain because of Brexit

The Sunday Times reported that Mrs May’s defacto deputy, David Lidington, who voted Remain, was being lined up to replace her, while the Mail on Sunday said the Brexiteer Environment Secretary Michael Gove was the “consensus choice”.

But one senior backbencher told the BBC’s Iain Watson that even standing aside would not be enough for her deal to be voted through – having twice been defeated by large margins – and that Mrs May might as well “dig in”.

No 10 dismissed suggestions that Mrs May could be persuaded to stand aside, or that she would agree a “job share” arrangement where senior ministers would be given extra responsibilities.

The BBC’s political editor, Laura Kuenssberg said there was “serious manoeuvring” going on.

  • Sydney Aiello, a survivor of the Parkland school shooting, dies by suicide

Sydney Aiello, who survived the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, has died from suicide, people close to the family told CNN.

Her mother, Cara, told CNN affiliate WFOR that Aiello suffered from survivor’s guilt after one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history and had recently been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Aiello, a student at Florida Atlantic University, died Sunday. Her funeral was Friday in Davie, Florida.

Read: Christchurch shootings: New Zealand falls silent for mosque victims

Aiello had been on campus the day of the mass attack but was not in the building where the shootings took place, her mother said, according to WFOR. Aiello, a cheerleader in high school, graduated just months after a troubled teen gunned down 14 students and three teachers there.

The family of Parkland school shooting victim Meadow Pollack described Aiello as “someone dear to Meadow.”

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School this week sent an email of bereavement about Aiello’s death to staff, a teacher told CNN.

A former history teacher described Aiello as “nice and always smiling and talkative.”

Read: John Legend on US gun culture: ‘It’s insane, it’s radical and it’s terrible’

“She was always eager to say hello to everyone in the hallway,” the teacher said.

The February 14, 2018 massacre was carried out by former Stoneman Douglas student Nikolas Cruz, then 19, who confessed to being the gunman and was indicted on 17 counts of murder.

In the weeks after the carnage, grieving students launched a nationwide movement calling for public policy changes that would prevent a similar tragedy.

Gun safety advocates credit those efforts for state legislation enacted last year across the country, including 67 new gun laws approved by both Republican and Democratic legislators in 26 states and Washington, DC, according to a year-end report by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

  • Mueller report: US Congress awaits key findings from Attorney General Barr

US congressional leaders are awaiting conclusions from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, with early findings expected Sunday.

The long-awaited report was submitted on Friday to Attorney General William Barr, who spent Saturday at the justice department poring over the document.

The report is the culmination of two years of investigation by Mr Mueller.

A justice department official said it did not call for new charges.

Read: Donald Trump launches furious attack on Robert Mueller

In the course of their investigation, Mr Mueller and his team have already charged 34 people – including six former Trump aides and a dozen Russians – as well as three companies.

None of those charges directly related to the allegations of collusion between the campaign and Moscow – allegations that President Trump has always denied.

Mr Mueller reportedly also examined another question: whether Mr Trump committed obstruction of justice in an effort to curtail an FBI investigation into connections between his campaign and Russians.

It is not yet known how much of the report – if any – will be made available to the public. Mr Barr will decide initially how much information to share with Congress.

Mr Barr, who was appointed by Mr Trump, told congressional leaders on Friday that he was “committed to as much transparency as possible.”

    ‘Watch and wait’

Mr Barr spent nine hours at the justice department on Saturday before leaving at around 19:00 (23:00 GMT), US media reported.

The president, meanwhile, travelled to his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, where he played a round of golf and ate lunch with the rap-rock artist Kid Rock.

He was uncharacteristically silent on social media – posting no remarks on the news that the Mueller report had been submitted.

The president has in the past repeatedly lashed out at the special counsel investigation, branding it a “witch hunt”. Asked about the president’s mood over the weekend, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley replied simply: “He’s good”.

Read: Ex-Trump aide should be jailed for 19 – 24 years – Mueller

Mr Gidley said that the Trump administration had not received a copy of or been briefed on Mr Mueller’s report.

Mr Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told the Washington Post that the president was in “watch and wait” mode.

“We’ve all waited this long. Let’s just await the reading of what’s disclosed,” Mr Giuliani said.

Despite all the attention is has received since it was submitted on Friday, the special counsel’s investigation is not the only probe that could threaten Mr Trump’s presidency. About a dozen other investigations are being run independently of Mr Mueller’s office.

They include a federal investigation in New York that is looking into possible election-law violations by the Trump campaign and his businesses and possible misconduct by the Trump inaugural committee.

What happens next with the Mueller report?

Legally, the attorney general is under no obligation to release the report publicly, and his copy to Congress could contain redactions, but during his confirmation hearings before senators Mr Barr vowed to release as much as he could.

A number of senior Democrats, including presidential hopefuls Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Julian Castro, have called for the full release of the report.

The House of Representatives, newly controlled by the Democratic party following last year’s mid-term elections, will also continue to investigate the Trump administration and could ask Mr Mueller to testify or instruct Mr Barr to provide relevant materials.

  • Historic royal visit to Cuba at odds with US stance

Royal visits overseas always attract a great deal of scrutiny, but none in recent memory has been quite as politically sensitive and potentially inflammatory towards the UK’s closest ally than this one.

When Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, set foot in Havana Sunday, they’ll be making history by embarking on the first ever official visit to Cuba by members of the British royal family. But they’re doing so at a time when much of the western world is denouncing Cuba’s role in the unfolding political and humanitarian crisis in its close socialist partner, Venezuela.

It’s a trip that would have seemed impossible only a handful of years ago, before former US President Barack Obama and former Cuban President Raul Castro thawed more than half a century of tense relations between the North American neighbors and their allies. But since that 2016 breakthrough, the world is a very different place.

Read: Islamic State group defeated as final territory lost, US-backed forces say

President Donald Trump has reversed many of the Obama-era policies toward Cuba, reinstating travel and trade restrictions. His sharp rhetoric has only become more aggressive since the presidential crisis unfolded in Venezuela. The role of Cuban military and intelligence advisers serving the disputed regime of President Nicolas Maduro is one of the main concerns of the US administration and its allies.

“For decades, the socialist dictatorships of Cuba and Venezuela have propped each other up in a very corrupt bargain,” Trump said in February, adding: “Maduro is not a Venezuelan patriot; he is a Cuban puppet.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went further earlier this month: “No nation has done more to sustain the death and daily misery of ordinary Venezuelans, including Venezuela’s military and their families, than the communists in Havana.”

It’s against this backdrop of American hostility that Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will spend four days in Cuba highlighting “the growing bilateral relationship with the UK and showcasing some of the cultural links between the two countries,” according to a royal spokesman.

But while Charles and Camilla are the ones who’ll have to navigate dinner with politicians in Havana’s Palacio de la Revolucion, it’s the British government who is responsible for sending them there.

“The royal family don’t make these decisions,” points out Andrew Lewer, a member of the UK Parliament for the governing Conservative Party. “It’s the Foreign Office, so the royal family themselves shouldn’t be blamed for this. Our friends in the United States, the many Cubans in Florida, will rightly be perplexed at the sight of the British royal family making a visit, going on tour, looking around the place, at a time when these despicable acts are taking place.”

Another Conservative MP, Julian Lewis, says the visit will be awkward for the heir to the British throne: “It is not for a constitutional monarch on a royal visit to get sucked into political confrontation. He will constantly have to balance the need to behave diplomatically with the danger of seeming to endorse the regime and being used as a propaganda tool by it.”

Read: German police arrest 10 people on suspicion of planning terror attacks

The fabled “soft power” of the royal family has long been used as a diplomatic tool by the British government and in this instance, the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office confirmed the strategic value of the visit: “This is part of our longstanding approach towards Cuba of engagement and frank dialogue over the issues that divide us like human rights, but also the engagement towards progress on the matters that bridge us together,” a spokesman said.
This approach to relations with Cuba could not be more different than that exhibited loudly in Washington.

Former Florida governor and now US Sen. Rick Scott has written to British Prime Minister Theresa May to protest the royal visit and is perplexed by the timing: “Why would the British government want to recognize Juan Guaido as the new President of Venezuela when we all know the Castro regime is the one propping up Maduro, dictator in Venezuela… and then at the same time have the Prince, who has unbelievable worldwide influence, go prop up the regime?”
Sen. Scott suggested that while in Cuba, Prince Charles should meet with dissidents and take a leaf from President Trump’s book: “He says ‘I’m going to stand for freedom and democracy’ and that’s exactly what Prince Charles ought to do.”

No such meetings are planned during the tour, but neither are there any planned encounters with Castro, who continues to serve as first secretary of the Communist Party. The Prince and Duchess will meet current President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who recently described Trump’s rhetoric towards Cuba as “warlike and dirty.”

It is, of course, a sensitive time for the UK as Theresa May navigates the endgame for Brexit. Royal visits are likely to continue to play a key role in Britain’s international relationships, especially in the years immediately following its departure from the European Union.

But it’s the timing of this historic royal visit that makes it so contentious — especially as the UK seeks post-Brexit trade deals. Trump is unlikely to warm to images of one of the UK’s most senior representatives enjoying the hospitality of Havana.

  • 2019 Africa Cup of Nations: Burundi seal historic qualification

Burundi qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time in their history on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at home to Gabon who have been eliminated.

Cedric Amissi scored in the 76th minute as Burundi, who only needed a draw to qualify, looked to have sealed their place at Egypt 2019.

An own-goal from Omar Ngando eight minutes from time made it a tense finish as Gabon searched for the victory they needed.

  • Injured Williams pulls out of Miami Open

Eight-time champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Miami Open because of a knee injury.

American Williams reached the third round on Friday by beating Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson, only the seventh match she has completed in 2019.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner was set to face Wang Qiang in the last 32 but the Chinese 27-year-old now gets a bye.

Williams, who said she was “disappointed”, has now withdrawn from two consecutive WTA events, following her retirement from last week’s tournament in Indian Wells because of a viral illness.

The 37-year-old last claimed the Miami title in 2015, with her last Grand Slam win coming at the 2017 Australian Open, a triumph which moved her one behind Margaret Court’s record of 24 major singles titles.

“I hope to be back next year to play at this one-of-a-kind tournament in front of the incredible fans here in Miami,” she said.

Japan’s Osaka, 21, has won the past two Grand Slam tournaments – the 2018 US Open and the Australian Open in January – but went down 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 to Hsieh on Saturday.

“This was a very emotional win for me,” said the 33-year-old Taiwanese, who will now face either Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark or Romanian Monica Niculescu in the fourth round.

    The letter

The letter was in response to an earlier letter written to the party by the leadership of the NPP regarding the need for the two parties to meet within this week and commence discussion on the disbandment of political vigilante groups associated to them.

The NPP, in a letter dated March 15, 2019, proposed that the NDC choose a date, venue and the relevant stakeholders it deemed appropriate for the meeting.

In response to the aforementioned request, the NDC in its letter expressed appreciation to the leadership of the NPP for corroborating its position that the discussion had to be a multi-stakeholder engagement.

    Recall

It would be recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his third State Of the Nation Address on February 21, this year, directed the two parties to meet within the week of his speech to dialogue on disbanding party vigilantes.

He added that if the dialogue failed, he would initiate legislation on the matter.

After almost a week of not hearing from the NPP, the Chairman of the NDC, Mr Ofosu Ampofo, wrote to the President.

In his letter, Mr Ofosu Ampofo suggested that other political parties, civil society and the media should be invited to join the dialogue.

In his response, President Akufo-Addo said he saw no basis for the request given that the suggested groups did not have any “vigilante” groups.

As a result of the delay by both the NPP and the NDC to meet over the matter, the President has since directed the Attorney-General to draft legislation to tackle the menace of political vigilantism.

Rescuers are working to airlift 1,300 people stranded on a cruise ship off the west coast of Norway.

The vessel has since restarted three of its four engines and is moving towards the nearest port with the assistance of tugboats.

So far, more than 300 passengers have been rescued. Most of those on board are said to be British or US citizens.

“During the night, the sea was very rough. The boat rolled and rolled. And then we went to breakfast. And then we were going for the afternoon film show, and then the lights suddenly went out,” said Derek Browne, from southern England, who was on board with his wife Esther.

“We were airlifted on the helicopter, which was quite a frightening experience.”

Another rescued passenger, Janet Jacob, told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK she had “never seen anything so frightening”.

The Viking Sky suffered engine failure on Saturday afternoon while en route to Stavanger from Tromso.

Five helicopters and several rescue ships were called in for the rescue.

One of the rescue ships also lost engine power and a local paper said the “brutal” conditions meant lifeboats were forced to turn back.

Fisherman Jan Erik Fiskerstrand, whose boat was one of the first to come to help Viking Sky, told Aftenposten newspaper, “it was just minutes before this could have gone really wrong”.

The ship could have hit the rocks “if they had not started the engine and fastened the anchor”.

Olav Magne Stromsholm, who captains tourist vessels in the area, told the VG newspaper the Viking Sky had been “near disaster”, calling the waters there a “shipyard cemetery”.

Those brought ashore are being taken to a local sports complex and accommodation had been found for them in local hotels.

Seventeen people have been taken to hospital.

The Viking Sky is a Viking Ocean Cruises ship, which had its maiden voyage in 2017.

Speaking at the presentation of the Organised Labour Pension Committee report, General Secretary of TUC, Yaw Baah noted that his outfit was pacing up with its dialogue with SSNIT before January 1, 2020 when a lot of workers would be moved to the second tier without qualifying for anything from SSNIT, bemoaning that “there are a number of issues on the computation of SSNIT on the first tier”.

He stated that the core mandate of TUC was to protect the interest of its members, stressing that “it is sad to see that people have worked all their lives and what is due them is not coming”.

Read: Government targets effective labour regime

The chairman of the committee, Dr Justice Yankson, said that “the solution is to ensure the right interpretation of the Labour Act, such that when you put the figure into the formula as predetermined by law, the pensioner will end up with the right amount of money to be paid”.

In furtherance, he pointed out that according to the union’s understanding of the provisions of the act, the workers should be earning more as their pension than they are now, emphasising that “that is why we engaging the various stakeholders to ensure the right things are done”.

“From January 1, 2020, the first batch of workers who will benefit from tier three arrangements will get a lump sum paid to them from their tier two.

“Because you have contributed some money to SSNIT before the new act in 2010 came into effect, those monies that you have contributed is the component that is supposed to go into the lump that is supposed to be put on whatever money you will be getting from the tier two,” he averred.

Dr Yankson appealed to SSNIT that TUC wants those computation issues settled before January 1 because whatever tier two would pay was half of the component of what was due the pensioners.
