  • CAF CC: Kotei, Asante shine in Simba win

Ghanaian pair of James Kotei and Akwasi Asante were in fantastic form for Simba FC on Tuesday at the Tanzania National Stadium where they defeated Al Ahly by one goal to nothing in Group D of the 2019 CAF Champions League.

Kotei marshaled the Simba midfield and was able to put the brakes on Hossan Ashour and others. He was a delight to watch with his surging runs and ability initiate attacks.

Asante was also splendid on the left rear where his overlapping runs caused problems for the Al Ahly defenders.

  • Missing Kenyan activist Caroline Mwatha found dead

Missing Kenyan activist Caroline Mwatha has been found dead, police have told the BBC.

Ms Mwatha worked for the Dandora Community Justice Centre (DCDJ), documenting extra-judicial police killings on the Dandora estate in the east of the capital Nairobi.

She disappeared last Wednesday and efforts to find her spawned the trending hashtag #FindCarolineMwatha.

No more details about her death have been made public.

Amnesty International had tweeted about its concern for Ms Mwatha on Monday and said it had still hoped to find her alive.

The BBC’s Ferdinand Omondi says sources indicate that Ms Mwatha’s body is at the City Mortuary in Nairobi.

Her relatives had been searching the city’s hospitals and morgues over the past few days hoping to find her. A vigil was also held for Ms Mwatha in Nairobi on Monday.

Kenyan rights group Missing Voices called her a “gallant human rights defender”, and said she was last seen on Wednesday afternoon by a friend going into her home in Dandora.

Another friend said she did not pick up the phone when called that evening.

  • Catalonia independence leaders on trial in Madrid

A dozen leaders of Catalonia’s failed 2017 independence bid have gone on trial in Madrid, facing charges including rebellion and sedition.

If convicted, some could face up to 25 years in prison.

The semi-autonomous region of Catalonia held an independence referendum on 1 October 2017, and declared its independence from Spain weeks later.

But Spanish authorities declared the vote illegal, and the national government imposed direct rule.

The Catalonia crisis is considered the most serious to hit Spain since the era of fascist dictator Francisco Franco, who died in 1975.

Nine of the defendants have spent months in pre-trial detention, and arrived at the court on Tuesday morning under guard. The remaining three had been free on bail.

The most high-profile of the Catalan leaders on trial is former Vice-President Oriol Junqueras. His superior – former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont – fled abroad and remains in exile.

Mr Junqueras faces the longest potential sentence for the alleged crime of rebellion, at 25 years. Others accused of the same charge, including former speaker of the Catalan parliament Carma Forcadell, could receive sentences of 16-17 years.

They also face the lesser charge of sedition, as do several former ministers.

There is also the accusation of misuse of public funds, in organising a referendum that had been declared illegal by Madrid.

    Violence or voting?

In Spanish law, the charge of rebellion involves a public violent uprising – something those accused deny ever happened.

Some of the accused, speaking to the BBC ahead of the trial, said the proceedings were political in nature. Any violence, they said, was on the part of police and was committed against voters in a crackdown which made headlines around the world.

As the trial began, one of the accused, Jordi Sànchez, tweeted: “the trial against the vote begins”.

“I am going with my head held high, convinced that self-determination is not a crime,” he wrote.?

Outside the court, crowds of supporters and opponents of Catalonia’s independence bid gathered.

Spain’s El Pais newspaper reported that many were blocked from entering the Supreme Court by police – including, briefly, family members of the accused, until some confusion over who was permitted to enter was cleared.

Cries of ‘terrorists’ and ‘political prisoners’

This trial has fed into the already febrile atmosphere surrounding Spain’s longstanding territorial crisis.

Outside the supreme court, a group of unionists were demonstrating as the trial got under way. Most of them waved Spanish flags, although some held up a pre-constitutional symbol from the Franco dictatorship era.

They chanted “Catalonia is Spain”, called the defendants “terrorists” and demanded they be given lengthy jail sentences.

Just 20 metres away, across the road, another protest was being held, by leftist Spaniards and pro-independence Catalans. Brandishing Catalan independence symbols and flags representing the Spanish republic, they chanted their support for the 12 defendants in the trial, who they called “political prisoners”, and in favour of the right to decide for Catalonia.

A heavy police presence ensured that the two groups did not clash but tensions around the supreme court are running high.

    Political confrontation

High-profile politicians from both sides also made an appearance – Catalonia’s current President Quim Torra waved to his colleagues from the back of the court before proceedings began.

Tweeting from outside the court, he said: “We are in the Supreme Court to accuse the Spanish state of violating the civil and political rights of all Catalans.”

Spain’s far-right Vox party, which has been a fierce critic of the separatists and is also a third party to the case, was also present. It is calling for far longer sentences than the public prosecutors have asked for.

Iván Espinosa from the party told the BBC: “The most heinous crimes are going to be prosecuted… the most heinous crimes to have been committed in Spain with no bloodshed.”

“And what we expect is very heavy sentencing,” he added.

Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont – the architect of the disputed vote – told a press conference in Berlin that his former colleagues should never have been put on trial.

He said the trial was a “test for the whole judiciary Spanish system”, and therefore “a stress test for the Spanish democracy”.

“The image of our civil and political leaders on trial” concerns everyone who lives in a strong democracy, he said.

The trial begins almost a year and a half after the failed independence bid – which remains controversial.

In Madrid on Sunday, thousands gathered in a pro-unity demonstration against Catalan independence.

Yet the separatists retain significant political power. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez needs votes from pro-independence politicians to pass his government’s budget bill through the Spanish parliament.

If that bill fails, it could collapse the government and result in a snap election.

  • Messi wants Kevin-Prince’s contract cancelled?

Barcelona pair Jeison Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng will be frozen out of contention at the club ahead of their run-in by the orders of Lionel Messi, says Don Balon.

The duo have failed to impress since their arrival at Camp Nou and the Argentine sees them as potential dead weight with the Catalan outfit chasing a potential treble.

Murillo, who joined on loan from Valencia in January, has only made two appearances for Ernesto Valverde’s team, playing both legs against Levante in the Copa del Rey round of 16, and according to Don Balon, there are doubts within Barca’s locker room about the quality of the Colombia international.

Meanwhile, Boateng has featured just once since making a shock loan switch from Sassuolo. The Ghanaian has remained rooted to the bench since playing 63 minutes at the Sanchez Pizjuan in an uninspiring 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

Both players only arrived in January but Messi is said to want them gone at the end of the season, having not met his standards.

  • Nigerian widow testifies against Shell in The Hague

The widow of a Nigerian activist suing oil giant Shell over the execution of her husband says his death left her “traumatised” and “poverty-stricken”.

Esther Kiobel is testifying in court in The Hague, demanding compensation from the Netherlands-based firm.

She is among four women who accuse Shell of being complicit in the hanging of their husbands by Nigeria’s military in 1995. Shell denies the allegation.

The activists led mass protests against oil pollution in Nigeria’s Ogoniland.

The protests were seen as a major threat to then-military ruler Gen Sani Abacha, and Shell. They were led by author Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was among nine activists hanged by the military regime.

Their executions caused global outrage, and led to Nigeria’s suspension from the Commonwealth for more than three years.

Two of the widows were in court, but two others were denied visas to attend.

What was the atmosphere in court?

More than two decades later, memories of the executions still move the widows to tears, reports the BBC’s Anna Holligan from court.

Mrs Kiobel wiped her eyes, and in a quivering voice described her husband, Barinem Kiobel, as “kind-hearted”, our reporter adds.

Representatives of Shell looked on. At one point, the phone of one them rang as the widows wiped their eyes, prompting judges to remind everyone to keep their devices on silent, our reporter says.

What else has Mrs Kiobel said?

In a written statement, she said she had lost a “wonderful husband” and a “best friend”.

She added: “Shell came into my life to take the best crown l ever wore off my head. Shell came into my life to make me a poverty-stricken widow with all my businesses shut down. Shell came into my life to make me a refugee living in harsh conditions before l came to the United States through [a] refugee programme and now [I am a] citizen.

“The abuses my family and l went through are such an awful experience that has left us traumatised to date without help. We all have lived with so much pain and agony, but rather than giving up, the thought of how ruthlessly my husband was killed… has spurred me to remain resilient in my fight for justice.

“Nigeria and Shell killed my late husband: Dr Barinem Kiobel and his compatriots Kenule Tua Saro Wiwa, John Kpuinen, Baribor Bera, Paul Levula, Nordu Eawo and the rest [of the] innocent souls.

“My husband and the rest were killed… The memory of the physical torture my family and l went through has remained fresh in my mind, and whenever l look at the scar of the injury l sustained during the incident, my heart races for justice all the more.”

    What is Shell’s response?

In a statement, the firm said the executions were “tragic events which shocked us deeply”.

The statement added: “The Shell Group, alongside other organisations and individuals, appealed for clemency to the military government in power in Nigeria at that time. To our deep regret, those appeals went unheard.

“We have always denied, in the strongest possible terms, the allegations made in this tragic case. SPDC [the Shell Petroleum Development Company] did not collude with the authorities to suppress community unrest, it in no way encouraged or advocated any act of violence in Nigeria, and it had no role in the arrest, trial and execution of these men.

“We believe that the evidence clearly shows that Shell was not responsible for these distressing events.”

    Why were the activists hanged?

Saro-Wiwa and the eight other activists were executed after a secret trial in which they were convicted of murdering four Ogoni traditional leaders.

They denied the charge, and said they were framed.

Then-UK Prime Minister John Major described the trial as “a fraudulent”, and said it had led to “judicial murder”.

At his trial, Saro-Wiwa said the case was designed to prevent the Ogoni people from fighting against oil pollution which had devastated the region’s environment and had caused poverty and disease.

Saro-Wiwa had co-founded the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (Mosop) in 1990, launching mass campaigns to win compensation for environmental damage and to demand that the region be given a fair share of oil profits.

  • Venezuela crisis: Maduro condemns ‘extremist’ Trump

Venezuela’s embattled President Nicolás Maduro has called Donald Trump’s government a “gang of extremists” and blamed the US for his country’s crisis.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Maduro said he would not allow humanitarian aid into Venezuela as it was a way for the US to justify an intervention.

“They are warmongering in order to take over Venezuela,” he said.

The US and most Western governments have recognised opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim President.

Mr Maduro is under growing internal and international pressure to call early presidential elections amid a worsening economic crisis and accusations of widespread corruption and human rights violations.

Meanwhile, Mr Guaidó has called for new anti-government protests later on Tuesday.

    Maduro on Trump: ‘Extremist group’

Relations between the US and Venezuela were already fraught before President Trump’s administration became one of the first countries to back Mr Guaidó as interim leader.

Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations in response while Mr Trump said the use of military force remained “an option”.

In a rare interview, Mr Maduro said he hoped “this extremist group in the White House is defeated by powerful world-wide public opinion”.

Speaking in the capital, Caracas, he told the BBC’s Orla Guerin: “It’s a political war, of the United States empire, of the interests of the extreme right that today is governing, of the Ku Klux Klan, that rules the White House, to take over Venezuela.”

The US, which accuses Mr Maduro’s government of human rights violations and corruption, has led the international pressure on the Venezuelan president to step down.

It has imposed a raft of economic measures on the country, including against the state-owned oil company, PDVSA, aiming to hit Venezuela’s main source of revenue.

In recent years the US has frozen Mr Maduro’s US assets, restricted Venezuela’s access to US markets and blocked dealings with those involved in the country’s gold trade.

It has also criticised Mr Maduro’s increased use of the courts and security forces to suppress political opposition.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called the government a “disastrous dictatorship” while National Security Advisor John Bolton said Mr Maduro was holding an “illegitimate claim to power”.

When asked, in response to his Ku Klux Klan comment, if he believed Mr Trump was a “white supremacist”, Mr Maduro said: “He is, publicly and openly… They hate us, they belittle us, because they only believe in their own interests, and in the interests of the United States.”

Maduro on humanitarian aid: ‘A charade’

The president has rejected allowing foreign humanitarian aid into the country, a move that is being organised by the opposition. He said Venezuela had “the capacity to satisfy all the needs of its people” and did not have to “beg from anyone”.

But for years Venezuelans have faced severe shortages of basic items such as medicine and food. Last year, the inflation rate saw prices doubling every 19 days on average.

Three million people, or 10% of the population, have left the country since the economy started to worsen in 2014, according to the UN. And Mr Guaidó says more than 300,000 Venezuelans are at “risk of dying”.

Mr Maduro, who has blamed US sanctions for Venezuela’s economic woes, said the US intended to “create a humanitarian crisis in order to justify a military intervention”.

“This is part of that charade. That’s why, with all dignity, we tell them we don’t want their crumbs, their toxic food, their left-overs.”

Maduro on calling elections: ‘What’s the point?’

Mr Maduro, in power since 2013, was re-elected to a second term last year but the elections were controversial with many opposition candidates barred from running or jailed, and claims of vote-rigging.

Head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, Mr Guaidó declared himself president on 23 January, saying the constitution allowed him to assume power temporarily when the president was deemed illegitimate.

Mr Maduro – who still has the support of Turkey, Russia and China and, crucially, of the Venezuelan army – said he did not see the need for early presidential elections.

“What’s the logic, reasoning, to repeat an election?” he asked.

He also said only “about 10” governments supported Mr Guaidó – in fact, more than 30 have announced their support for the opposition leader – and that they were trying to “impose a government that nobody has elected”.

“The extremists of the White House have taken it upon themselves to carry out a coup in Venezuela.”

  • Gordon Banks: World Cup-winning goalkeeper dies aged 81

England’s 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks has died aged 81.

Regarded as one of the game’s greatest in his position, Banks was named Fifa goalkeeper of the year six times and earned 73 caps for England.

He is perhaps best known for his wonder save from Pele during the 1970 World Cup against Brazil.

Born in Sheffield, he won the League Cup with Stoke and Leicester, before retiring in 1973.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight,” his family said.

“We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.”

Sir Bobby Charlton, who was part of the team alongside Banks that won the World Cup in 1966, said: “Gordon was a fantastic goalkeeper, without doubt one of the best England has ever had.

“I was proud to call him a team-mate. Obviously we shared that great day in 1966 but it was more than that.

“Even though I was on the pitch and have seen it many times since, I still don’t know how he saved that header from Pele.”

Banks is the fourth player of the England team that started the 1966 World Cup final to have died, after Bobby Moore, Ray Wilson and Alan Ball.

Another of that XI, Sir Geoff Hurst, tweeted: “One of the very greatest. Thinking especially of Ursula, Julia, Wendy and Robert. Sad for football, Stoke City and for England fans.”

Stoke chairman Peter Coates said Banks, who made almost 200 appearances for the club, had been “poorly for a number of weeks”.

He told Radio 5 live: “He made his home in Stoke, and was very much part of the fabric of the club. You don’t get too many like him, and he was immensely modest for all his talent.

“He was England’s greatest goalkeeper when they had their finest hour.”

England and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was among the first to pay tribute, tweeting: “Of course there was that save, but it’s so much more we are mourning today. RIP Gordon Banks. England legend, your legacy will live on.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker said: “An absolute hero of mine, and countless others, England’s World Cup winner was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and such a lovely, lovely man.”

Ex-England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who replaced Banks at Leicester, tweeted: “I’m devastated – today I’ve lost my hero.”

“A World Cup winner, a legend. RIP Gordon Banks,” tweeted Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire, while Watford keeper Ben Foster said: “Had the pleasure of meeting you as an 18-year old-with my Dad, and him being completely star struck by you. Total gent. You will always be a member of the Goallys Union.”

‘I said ‘why didn’t you catch it?’

Former England midfielder Alan Mullery played with Banks in the 1970 World Cup match against Brazil, and described to 5 live the famous save that denied Pele.

“Jairzinho was flying down the wing, and he clips the ball to the far post, and Pele – who climbed to such a height better than anybody else – headed the ball and Gordon went from one post to another and he flicks the ball with his fingertips and it just goes over the crossbar,” he said.

“I patted him on his head, and I said ‘why didn’t you catch it?’ and the abuse that came back was unbelievable.

“He was the best at that time. We had some great goalkeepers in those days, and the only person I can think came near was Pat Jennings.

“He was an absolutely marvellous goalkeeper. He was a likable man, and when it came to business, he was probably the best there has ever been.”

England manager Gareth Southgate paid his tributes, saying: “An all-time great for England, I was privileged enough to be in his company on a number of occasions.

“It was particularly special to be with him at a Football Writers’ tribute dinner last year and wish him well on his 80th birthday.

“Gordon spoke to the room about that incredible save from Pele and moments like that from his remarkable World Cup-winning career will continue to linger long in the memory.

“On behalf of everyone connected with England, I send my condolences to his wife Ursula, his family and friends.”

Banks started his career at Chesterfield, before joining Leicester in 1959 for £7,000, and it was at the Foxes that he established himself as England’s number one, earning his first international cap in 1963 against Scotland.

He played in every game of the 1966 World Cup campaign, culminating in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the final at Wembley.

In eight years at Leicester, he was runner-up in two FA Cup finals and won the League Cup in 1964, before joining Stoke in 1967.

He stayed at the Potters until his retirement from professional football, winning the League Cup again in 1972, the club’s only major honour.

Later that year he lost the sight in his right eye after a car crash.

  • GFA elections: Kurt Okraku denies alliance with Palmer

Derrick Okraku, Special Aide to Dreams FC Executive Director Kurt Okraku has vehemently denied reports of an alliance with Tema Youth President Wilfred Osei Kwaku for the presidential race of the Ghana Football Association.

In a Press Release signed by Derrick Okraku, the reports are palpably false and are carved out of frivolous imaginations and must be discarded.

Read: George Afriyie, Palmer, others should stay away from GFA post – Abbey Pobee

    Below is the full statement:

    • My attention has been drawn to a publication by a website named 442gh.com suggesting a merger between Kurt E S Okraku and Wilfred Osei Kweku (Parma) as presidential hopefuls for the Ghana Football Association.

    • I wish to say that this palpable falsehood is deeply rooted in frivolous and factual inaccuracies and should be treated with disregard.

    • It is shocking that while Mr Kurt E S Okraku has not declared intentions to vie for the position, attempts would be made to align him with an individual who has publicly affirmed his stance for polls with several campaign trails already attached to his credit.

    • Key stakeholders and the general public who have faith in the capabilities of Kurt E S Okraku and yearned for his candidature would be duly informed with much more decorum and perspicuity on an ultimate decision which would be deemed to be in the best interest of Ghana football.

    Thank you.

  • Kotoko’s Danlad Ibrahim should have been Black Satellites No.1 goalkeeper – Damba

Former Black Stars goalkeeper, Abukari Damba says Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim should have been the No. 1 at the ongoing Africa Youth Championship in Niger for the Black Satellites.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko shot-stopper Danlad Ibrahim should have been the first choice goalkeeper of the Black Satellites team at the ongoing 2019 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Niger, according to former Ghana international Abukari Damba.

The enterprising glovesman left his mark with the national U-17 side by clinching silver medal during the 2017 Africa Junior Championship in Gabon. He later guided his side to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in India following an impressive performance in between the sticks with the Starlets.

This, the former Real Tamale United goal post custodian, believes has positioned the 16-year-old goal tender to man the post for the Black Satellites side during their campaign at the biennial tournament in Niger.

Read: Current crop of Black Satellites players not good enough – Augustine Arhinful

“where was his starting point, is it not from Kotoko? He built on and you saw him, then took him to U-17 and he performed marvelously well,” Damba bellowed in an interview with Kumasi-based Otec FM

“What again makes him young! What again! He has had the exposure and what has then left?,” he continued ranting.

“We were all looking up to this young man and if it could be recalled, l made a whole lot of analysis on Danlad so far as his career is concerned when he was with the U-17 side. I talked about his future goalkeeping career with regards to his progression to the senior national team,”

“I said we should help him by making sure that we raise him systematically but very, very cautiously. They should not rush in his progression from U17 to U20 and then to U23. But then we will see progressively what we are supposed to do,”

“We have been complaining that we do not have very good keepers and with this young chap l look at him and l picture Ali Jara, l look at him and l see Samy Adjei and Osei Kwame and co. at their youthful ages,”

“You took the young man to the tournament and you say he is young. Danlad should have been the number at the tournament or at least the starter for the last game. He should have been given the nod and now look at the mess being caused and why?”

  • Navarrete: I will knock out Dogboe in rematch

WBO World super bantamweight titlist, Emanuel Navarrete, is confident he will knock Isaac Dogboe out in their supposed rematch which could take place at the Madison Square Garden in New York on April 20.
Navarrete, who dethroned Dogboe in their first fight on December 8 at the same venue, anticipates a very tough clash against the Ghanaian but believes he has a better chance of stopping his opponent should they engage in exchanges.

Dogboe (20-1, 14 KOs) is looking forward to avenging a painful defeat to Mexico’s Navarrete (26-1, 22 KOs) and is ready to activate an immediate rematch clause in their contract.

Read: Dogboe, Navarrete rematch set for May

The Ghanaian lost a unanimous decision to Navarrete in a bout that shocked the entire boxing world especially when Dogboe has earlier destroyed the likes of Cesar Juarez, Jessie Magdaleno and Hidenori Otake.

In an interview with ESPN, Navarrete noted that his chances of knocking Dogboe out will be greater than it was last December when the fight travelled the entire distance. He explained that the Ghanaian desire to come after him in the next fight would be to his advantage in the rematch.

“In the first fight with Dogboe, I think he was confident because maybe he saw me and felt that I’m not really a fighter but nobody looks at my body as being that of a boxer. Because I do not look like that but I feel very strong, I feel like that affected him a lot, when he could not hurt me and he started to decline,” Navarrete told ESPN Deportes.

Read: Commey ruled out of April 12 unification bout with Lomachenko

“In the next fight, I think Dogboe will come in with more desire, he will want to make it more of a fight, but that is my comfort zone. They come to me and I take them in. I feel better when they come to me because I make them fail and I take advantage.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, because he’s a good puncher, he’s tough, it’s going to be difficult, but I think I will have a better chance of knocking him out,” he added.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Brito, Operational Director of Zanfer Promotions, promoters of the Mexican puncher said the rematch between Navarrete and Dogboe was yet to be confirmed but there was talk of the possibility of adding the fight to the pay-per-view undercard of Terence Crawford’s WBO welterweight title defence against Amir Khan which takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York.

  • Channel 4 rejects Michael Jackson estate complaint over documentary

Channel 4 is to air a controversial documentary about Michael Jackson, despite receiving a letter of complaint from the late singer’s estate.

Leaving Neverland focuses on two men who claim the pop superstar abused them when they were children.

The family of the late singer have asked the broadcaster not to show it, saying the film-makers did not ask them for a response to the allegations.

In a statement, Channel 4 said it had followed the right response procedure.

“Channel 4 viewers will make their own judgement about the testimony of the two victims interviewed in the film,” it said.

In the letter, which was released to the Associated Press, the Jackson estate claimed the documentary’s makers broke programming guidelines by failing to get a response from the singer’s family and friends.

“I think we can all agree that the false allegations being made in your ‘documentary’ are ‘significant allegations’,” the letter said.

“It is hard to imagine more significant accusations that can possibly be made against anyone.”

A similar letter was also sent to US broadcaster HBO, which co-produced the documentary.

    Jackson denials

It includes interviews with Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who were aged seven and 10 when the singer befriended them and their families.

“The documentary deals with the criminal trials and civil court cases and any involvement our principal interviewees had in those,” the broadcaster’s statement said.

“It is not unusual for victims of child sex abuse to only feel able to disclose what happened to them in later life.”

The documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, has also been defended by its director, Dan Reed.

“Anyone who sees the film will know it is solely about hearing the stories of two specific individuals and their families in their own words, and that is a focus we are very proud of,” he said.

  • Trump supporter attacks BBC cameraman at El Paso rally

A supporter of US President Donald Trump has attacked a BBC cameraman at a campaign rally in El Paso, Texas.

Sporting a Make America Great Again cap, the man shoved and swore at the BBC’s Ron Skeans and other news crews before being pulled away.

Mr Skeans said the “very hard shove” came from his blindside. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Read: Ivanka Trump hits back at hoovering lookalike artwork

Mr Trump saw the attack and confirmed Mr Skeans was well with a thumbs up after it happened.

The president has had a fractious relationship with the media from the very start of his time in office.

He has claimed journalists are “the enemy of the people” and slammed the “fake news” for reports he deems unfavourable.

Mr Skeans said the man almost knocked him and his camera over twice before he was wrestled away by a blogger.

President Trump checked they were well with a thumbs up, and continued his speech after Mr Skeans returned the gesture.

BBC Washington producer Eleanor Montague and Washington correspondent Gary O’Donoghue were sitting in front of the camera.

Read: Trump sees total rout of Islamic State group as imminent

Ms Montague said the protester had attacked other news crews but Mr Skeans “got the brunt of it”.

A campaign official for Mr Trump afterwards suggested the attacker was drunk.

The president went to El Paso, on the US border with Mexico, to campaign for a border wall, a divisive issue which caused the longest government shutdown in US history.

Ms Montague said the president had spoken of “fake news” and how the media misrepresented him in the run up to the assault.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Mr O’Donoghue said it was “an incredibly violent attack”.

“This is a constant feature of these rallies – a goading of the crowds against the media,” Mr O’Donoghue said, who added that he had been “spat at before”.

Last August UN experts warned Mr Trump’s attacks “increase the risk of journalists being targeted with violence”, calling his rhetoric “strategic”.

New York Times publisher AG Sulzberger has urged the president to stop his media assaults.

CNN meanwhile filmed supporters of Mr Trump yelling abuse and swearing at reporters covering a rally in Florida last year.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci condemned Trump’s supporters at the Florida rally on Twitter, saying the behaviour was “not who we are”.

  • DreamOval Foundation to train young girls in STEM fold

With a significant drop-out rate of girls from primary school to secondary school and college, one new initiative in Ghana aims to improve the country’s innovation, competitiveness and productivity by bringing more girls into the formal digital fold.

A report by the World Wide Web foundation reported that women in poor urban areas in developing countries are 50% less likely to use the Internet than men.

Femi TI is a project initiated by the DreamOval Foundation that aims to train young girls to develop problem-solving skills through coding and robotics and empower them to facilitate technology creation to generate opportunities for Societal Transformation, thereby ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. The first edition of FemiTI has just been concluded in partnership with SAP.

According to reports, 75% of girls in Ghana attend primary school, but there’s a significant drop in girls in high school and college. The DreamOval Foundation believes this gap can be bridged through the active development of women by introducing them to STEM-related programmes.

Francis Ahene-Affoh, Senior Vice President at the DreamOval Foundation, said: “We believe in empowering women in the 21st century as they play a key role in the development process. We identified these girls from underprivileged communities who can be empowered digitally to become problem-solvers for their communities.”

Cathy Smith, Managing Director at SAP Africa, said this has implications for efforts toward building peaceful, prosperous and sustainable communities.

  • Why men pull away

Do you feel as though your man is growing distant? Does he seem cold, closed off, or uninterested in you? There are many different causes behind why men pull away, and if you’re noticing that your man is shutting you out, these six key reasons can help clue you in as to why he’s suddenly growing apart from you.

    1. He’s Emotionally Unavailable

If you notice that your man has a hard time opening up to you, is uncomfortable showing his emotions in public, and never wants to appear weak or vulnerable around you, it’s clear that he’s unavailable emotionally.

Read: Is there a right age to lose your virginity?

Men who are emotionally unavailable can end up pulling away from their partner and growing distant because they are unwilling or unable to be totally forthright and honest. If your man never lets his guard down around you and never wants to divulge anything personal, he’s going to shut you out because that’s how he handles personal relationships.

    2. He’s Distracted

Men often pull away because they’re emotionally distracted or preoccupied. For instance, if he’s dealing with a friend issue, stress at work, or other personal problems, he’s not going to be able to devote his full time and attention to you. When your man has other matters on his mind and different issues to tackle, he’s likely going to keep you at a distance in order to prevent feeling overwhelmed or overextended. When he’s under a lot of pressure or dealing with disappointment or loss, being more closed-off can be a way for him to manage his stress before he’s able to put his attention back on you.

    3. He Wants to Be With Someone Else (Or Already Is)

If your guy forms a crush on someone else, is involved in an emotional affair, or is cheating on you, it’s not uncommon to notice him growing distant and cold. A man who is vague about his whereabouts, is suddenly demanding his privacy, and seems to be texting or messaging another person can often be devoting his attention elsewhere while simultaneously putting up a barrier between the two of you.

In these situations, it’s important to trust your gut and your heart when trying to determine if your man is losing interest in you or has moved on to someone else. If something seems off, the very act of shutting you out can help to clue you in that he’s not the man you thought he was.

    4. He Doesn’t Want to Commit

Has your man ever been described as a player? While you may think that your relationship with one another is progressing at a good a pace, a man may pull away when he senses that things between the two of you are getting too serious. If he’s interested in more of a fling than a committed, long-term relationship, he may put up a wall in order to stall or stop whatever’s progressing between the two of you. At the same time, if he’s feeling a lot of pressure from you to commit or your relationship is moving at a rapid pace, he may also choose to act in a distant manner in order to slow things down and take the time he needs to figure out what he really wants going forward.

    5. He’s Constantly Arguing With You

Conflict is a part of any happy and healthy relationship, but if you’re having argument after argument with your guy and can’t see eye to eye, a common consequence is that he’ll choose to shut you out.

When he’s feeling frequently put down, rejected, or demeaned, it’s not uncommon for him to act in a cold and distant way because he doesn’t want to engage with you at the risk of having another argument. Rather than fighting all the time, it’s important that you and your man work on your listening and communication skills in order to handle your arguments in a constructive way that brings you closer together—rather than farther apart.

    6. He Senses That You’re Pulling Away

If you think your man is pulling away from you, it’s imperative that you take a moment to reflect on your own actions and behavior. After being completely honest with yourself, you can see if you’re the one who’s actually growing distant and shutting him out, and he’s simply reacting to your behavior. If he’s feeling unappreciated, unimportant to you, or taken for granted, he may pull away from you because he’s not getting what he needs from you as a partner.

Before you focus on your man’s behavior, it’s important to look at yourself as well and see if you’re being the best partner you can be. In effect, what’s causing him to shut you out may be his way of dealing with feelings of neglect or rejection in your relationship.

  • Lampard plays down talks of Chelsea return

Chelsea’s 6-0 defeat at Manchester City at the weekend left Derby County coach Frank Lampard shocked but the former midfield great has distanced himself from talks of returning to Stamford Bridge as a possible replacement for manager Maurizio Sarri.

Chelsea suffered their worst-ever Premier League defeat at City on Sunday and Sarri is now the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next Premier League manager to be sacked, with Lampard and Zinedine Zidane the favourites to replace him.

Lampard, Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals, said he was focused on doing his best for Derby and backed Chelsea to bounce back quickly from the defeat, which pushed them down to sixth in the table.

“It’s certainly a club I respect and a manager that I respect so it wouldn’t make me smile or anything different because my job is here,” the former England international told British media.

“I’m working very hard and my whole thoughts are with Ipswich Town away on Wednesday, and travelling down to Brighton in the FA Cup (fifth round) at the weekend.”

Lampard, whose team are seventh in the second-tier Championship, said Chelsea had been beaten by a ‘great team’ in champions City.

“It’s not nice and it doesn’t happen to Chelsea much, so when it does it’s a shock,” he added.

“With all top teams, the important thing is that you come back strong, no matter what type of defeat. It is what makes top teams, resilience, and Chelsea as a club will have it.”

  • Desalination Plant to resume operations March

The Director of Communications of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Stanley Mantey, says he is optimistic that the Teshie Desalination Plant, which treats sea water for domestic and commercial use, will resume operations by the end of February.

He said that was premised on the possible successful conclusion of the renegotiation of the agreement between the GWCL and Befessa, owners of the plant.

In an interview in Accra last Sunday, Mr Mantey also promised that the outcome of the renegotiation would be made known to the public.

Read: PUWU urges Nana Addo to convert desalination plant to standby facility

The Teshie Desalination Plant Agreement was signed between the GWCL and Befessa on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis in February 2011.

The plant was built in February 2015 to address water supply shortfalls, particularly in the Teshie-Nungua area.
In spite of its construction, some residents still complain of water shortages.

    Residents

Some residents of Teshie who spoke to the Daily Graphic appealed to the government and the GWCL to speed up negotiations and find a permanent solution to their water supply challenges.

They explained that since January last year they had been experiencing water supply disruptions, which had since not improved.

One of the residents, Ms Joyce Amponsah, explained that the Teshie community had not experienced frequent flow of water for two years now, a situation she described as worrying.

Read: GWCL operates at full capacity

Another resident, Gifty Appiah, said since 2017 they had had water flow through their taps only on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“There was a time in December last year when we did not have water flow through our taps for weeks and we did not receive any information as to what the problem was,” she said.

Another resident, Mr Desmond Adjei, appealed to the government to address the water treatment plant issue to save the GWCL from accruing more unnecessary debts.

    Petition

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), a stakeholder, sent two petitions to the government in 2015 and January this year to propose a new agreement.

According to the petition, the GWCL bought water from the plant at GH¢6.75 per cubic metre, which was against the PURC approved tariff for water which was GH¢1.47 per cubic metre, a huge tariff differential of GH¢5.28 per cubic metre.

It described the agreement as needless, stating that the Kpong water expansion works were started at the time the desalination plant was introduced, which should have been sufficient to meet the deficit required to improve the supply of water for Accra.

It explained that the GWCL had, since the operation of the plant, been incurring debt under the contract signed in February 2011 with Befessa.

Checks from the GWCL show that in the absence of the desalination plant, the people of Teshie-Nungua take their supply from the Kpong and the Weija treatment plants.

According to the PUWU, the plant, which began operations in February 2015, had since its operations brought about a major drain on the coffers of the GWCL.

The GWCL buys water produced at the plant for distribution to residents of Teshie-Nungua and surrounding communities.

The water was sold in bulk to the GWCL, the offtaker, at $1.50 or GH¢6.75 per cubic metre as of 2015.

The GWCL was also to pay a monthly capacity charge of GH¢5.82 million to Befessa, even during periods when the plant was not in production.

The petition said from February to August 2015, the GWCL received GH¢5.72 million from the sale of water from the plant, as against an expenditure of GH¢48.68 million.

    PUWU

The General Secretary of PUWU TUC, Mr Michael Adumatta Nyantakyi, told the Daily Graphic that the plant had also not contributed any positive outcomes to the operation of the GWCL but rather piled up debt and losses on the company.

He stated that the GWCL had accumulated debt of $10 million that needed to be paid.

“As key stakeholders, we have observed this trend and we think that the rate at which the debt is piling up has the potential to affect not only the plant but also other supply systems of the GWCL, which can lead to a major water crisis across the country,” he said.

“In 2015, just about six months after it started operating, we sent a petition to then President John Dramani Mahama, drawing his attention to the bills and debts that were accumulating and for him to take some action.

He explained that, on the average, the monthly cost for the operation of the desalination plant was equivalent to GH¢11 million.

“The whole agreement, when you look at it, was skewed to favour the private operator and the debt from the desalination plant continues to pile up on the GWCL.

Funds which are mobilised from other operational regions of the GWCL are being used to pay the debts,” he lamented.

He said the agreement was flawed technically and financially and urged that some serious investigations be conducted to find out if the country was shortchanged.

    Rehabilitation

Meanwhile, the plant is undergoing a major rehabilitation for it to produce at maximum capacity.

When completed, the plant, which has been shut since January 2018, is expected to produce about 60 million litres of water per day to serve the water supply needs of more than 250,000 residents of Teshie-Nungua and surrounding communities.

A team from the Daily Graphic which visited the plant saw some workers of Abengoa, the Spanish multinational company in charge of operating the plant, working on the intake valves.

A source at the plant that declined to be named because he did not have the authority to speak explained to the Daily Graphic that the workers were undertaking rehabilitation works and not producing water.

Led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Emmanuel Lamptey, the team inspected construction works at the Kwashie-bu Electoral (Racecourse, Rasta Junction) and the Tabora-Chantan roads (Chantan six to six and Chantan Market roads).

    Cost

The project, which is 40 per cent complete, covers a road distance of 13.3km estimated at GH¢39 million and a 2.5km drain stretch at a cost of GH¢1.8 million.

According to Dr Lamptey, the 13.3km road is divided into four units which included a 3.1km stretch from the Chantan electoral area; 4.1km within the Kwashie-bu electoral area while the remaining 6.1 was within the NIC electoral area and Nii Okaiman West.

He commended the contractors for the quality of work done so far.

The chief executive observed that even though the municipality boasts a 405km road network, only 23 km was tarred as at the time he assumed office with the exception of the Awoshie-Pokuase main road.

Dr Lamptey, therefore, expressed his commitment to ensure massive infrastructural development in his municipality.

He, therefore, entreated his constituents, including businesses to endeavour to pay their property rates and taxes regularly.

    Assurances

The acting Head of Department, Ga Central Urban Roads, Mr John Armah, and the Resident Engineer in charge of the Chantan roads, Mr Carlos Mensah, were both optimistic that the project would be completed on time.

Some residents, particularly commercial drivers, also expressed their appreciation to the assembly for the construction works, adding that the poor quality of roads had over the years affected their businesses.

  • Arsenal ‘s Ramsey signs Juventus deal worth £400k-a-week

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Juventus in the summer in a deal that will earn him over £400,000 a week.

The 28-year-old has agreed a four-year contract that will see him join the Italian champions as a free agent, ending his 11-year spell with Arsenal.

Ramsey passed a two-part medical in January, having picked Juve following talks with a host of European clubs.

He will be the highest-earning British player ever based on basic salary.

The Wales international’s Arsenal contract expires on 30 June and the Gunners will receive no fee when he leaves.

Ramsey, who joined Arsenal from Cardiff City in 2008 for a fee of around £4.8m, held preliminary talks with Barcelona and also received an offer from Paris St-Germain.

Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Real Madrid also showed interest, with Real forward Gareth Bale understood to have encouraged his Wales team-mate to link up with him in Spain.

Arsenal did present Ramsey with the offer of a new deal in September but it was turned down and the club were not prepared to meet his salary demands.

Head coach Unai Emery had reservations about Ramsey’s role in his squad.

Ramsey’s desire to play as a number eight, running on to the ball from an advanced central midfield position, clashed with Emery’s vision.

In his 11 seasons at the club, he has struck double figures in a season three times, with a best mark of 16 in all competitions in 2013-14.

Some beneficiaries of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo) programme, who were previously engaged in the Youth In Afforestation programme, will be demonstrating for their allowance arrears for the past four months.

Ellen Acheampong, the spokesperson for the Disgruntled NaBCo recruits, told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday, 12 February 2019 that they have worked in various fields for the past four months without any stipend.

Ms Acheampong noted that most of the affected recruits were previously engaged under the Youth In Afforestation programme and were receiving their allowances promptly from the Forestry Commission.

However, after they all resigned from the afforestation programme and joined NaBCo, they have been worse off.

Opposition sources in Cameroon say government soldiers were responsible for the burning down of a hospital in the restive South-West region.

At least three people were reportedly burned alive.

  • United a ‘laughing stock’ under Mourinho – Jones

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has said the club were a “laughing stock” under Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was sacked on Dec. 18 with United 11 points adrift of the Champions League places. However, eight wins from nine under replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seen the club climb up to fourth place for the first time since the opening day of the season.

And Jones, who signed a contract extension this week, said there had been a complete turnaround in recent weeks.

Read: Man Utd legend Scholes takes on first managerial role at Oldham

“Everyone’s got to take us seriously now,” Jones said. “We might have been a bit of a laughing stock at the beginning of the season but we’re certainly not now.

“We’ve proven that in the last 10 or 12 games. We’re improving, we’re still getting better. It was tough for everyone involved.

“The club, the supporters, everyone. But it’s about becoming stronger and seeing that through. I’ve said it in the past: we’ve not achieved anything yet, we’re under no illusions but we’re heading in the right direction.

“We knew we could get into the top four. It’s a big statement from where we were. Consistency is key in any sport and it’s no different here. We’re putting a run together, we need to keep momentum going and pick up points.”

Stand-in captain Ashley Young said that, despite the impressive form under Solskjaer, the United boss has needed to raise his voice towards the players — much like Sir Alex Ferguson was famous for doing during his time as manager.

Asked if Solskjaer had shouted at the players, Young told L’Equipe: “That shows you’re not in our dressing room, because I can tell you that we’ve had some hairdryer treatments recently.

“When Ole Gunnar arrived, in a kind of way, I got the impression that Sir Alex was back, because he was accompanied by Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick. But also because Ole Gunnar knows exactly what it means to play for the club.

“He is obsessed by winning, and — at the same time — with his players enjoying themselves on the pitch, like Sir Alex.”

Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof has trained ahead of United’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The defender missed the 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday with a minor injury but was fit enough to train at Carrington on Monday morning.

If the Sweden international is passed fit he is likely to start against the French champions at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

A civil court case is getting under way in the Netherlands, brought by Nigerian Ogoni activists against The Hague-based oil company, Royal Dutch Shell.

The firm is accused of having been complicit in the executions of nine Ogoni men during a Nigerian military crackdown in 1995.

Four of their widows are suing Shell for compensation and demanding an apology.

Shell denies any wrongdoing, saying it never colluded with Nigerian authorities or advocated any act of violence.

Ogoniland in the Niger Delta has long been blighted by environmental pollution blamed on oil production.

In the UK, Shell fought a legal action against Nigerians complaining their fishery had been affected.

  • British government sued over no-deal ferry contracts

The government is being sued for its decision to charter firms to run extra ferries, including one with no ships, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel, said the contracts, revealed after Christmas, were decided in a “secretive and flawed procurement process”.

The move comes days after Seaborne, one of the firms chosen, had its contract axed after its funding fell through.

The government said it had carried out a “competitive procurement process”.

“The Department for Transport acted transparently and competitively throughout the process of securing extra freight.

“This was done by approaching ferry operators and encouraging bids that could be fairly assessed against each other,” a spokeswoman said.

At a High Court hearing in London, Eurotunnel claimed the government contracts, announced on 29 December, were awarded without any public notice.

Eurotunnel’s barrister Daniel Beard QC said Eurotunnel only found out “when contract notices were published three days after Christmas”.

He said it was “quite remarkable” his client had not been informed given its recent history in running cross-Channel services.

Ewan West, representing Transport Secretary Chris Grayling in court, said the government’s procurement process was only for “maritime freight” services and that Eurotunnel “could never have provided that capacity” and “could not have complied” with the terms of the contracts.

Judge Peter Fraser ruled a four-day trial will begin on 1 March given the “obvious” urgency of the case and the “very important public interest matters” involved.

When the Department for Transport announced the contracts in December, in documents outlining the agreements it stated that an “unforeseeable” situation of “extreme urgency” meant there was no time for the contracts to be put out to tender – the standard practice for public procurements.

However, the BBC understands that a number of firms were considered and there was a private negotiation process.

Three suppliers were awarded a total of £102.9m in late December, aimed at easing “severe congestion” at Dover, in the case of a no-deal Brexit:

    * £46.6m to the French company Brittany Ferries

    * £42.5m (€47.3m) to Danish shipping firm DFDS

    * £13.8m to British firm Seaborne Freight

The decision to award a contract to Seaborne, a firm with no ships which the BBC found had never run a ferry service before, has been heavily criticised.

After Seaborne’s contract collapsed Mr Grayling faced calls for his resignation, with Labour accusing him of “rewriting the textbook on incompetence.”.

But Prime Minister Theresa May has said she continues to have full confidence in him.

  • Policewoman loses GHC60,000 to fraudsters

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded two persons for allegedly defrauding a policewoman of GH?60,000 under the pretext of clearing her two vehicles from the port for her. Foster Afomale, a mechanic, was charged with obtaining electronic payment falsely and defrauding by false pretence whilst Kwaku Agbetor, a mason and Togolese was charged with abetment of crime.

Their pleas were not taken as prosecution prayed for time to do further investigation. They will return to court on February 18.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Nyamekye told the Court presided over by Mrs Ruby Naa Aryeetey that the complainant, Florence Antwi is a Police officer stationed at the Kotoka International Airport.

According to ASP Nyamekye, in October 2018, Madam Antwi received a text message from a US sim number by which the sender introduced himself as one Captain Richmond Tawiah, a Ghanaian military officer on a UN mission to the United States.

The Prosecution said the complainant and the alleged military officer became friends and exchanged messages and pictures.

He said the said military man shared his desire of buying himself a car and another one for her.

The Prosecution said the complainant showed interest and the alleged officer sent pictures of some cars to her which made her believe that he had bought those cars.

ASP Nyamekye said the alleged military man proceeded by sending the contact of a supposed clearing agent, who the complainant contacted.

The suposed clearing agent asked the complainant to pay GH?60,000 for that purpose.

He said a GCB account bearing the name of Agbetor was given to her and she deposited the amount for clearing the cars after conferring with the said military man.

The prosecution said after the money was deposited, the phone lines of both “the soldier” as well as “the agent,” were blocked and the cars too were not sent to her.

ASP Nyamekye said when the ‘pictures’ of the soldier were used to trace him at Burma camp, the real Captain Randy Tawiah showed up but denied taking part in the scheme and revealed that other ladies have also fallen victim to such scams with the perpetrators using his pictures.

He said investigations revealed that the pictures were downloaded from his Facebook wall to perpetuate the crime.

The prosecution said on January 14, this year, the suspects were arrested and in their statements, Afomale claimed he received a message alert when the money was deposited so he called Agbetor who came to Aflao to withdraw the money for him, for which he gave Agbetor Gh?1,500 as his fee.

The Prosecution said Afomale claimed he transferred the money via mobile money to one Daniel Dumenu, the brain behind the crime who is currently serving a jail-term at the Ankaful Prisons.

  • Brexit: Theresa May says MPs must hold their nerve

Brexit talks are at a “crucial stage”, Theresa May will tell MPs later when she updates them on the negotiations.

The PM will say “we now all need to hold our nerve” to get the changes needed to get her Brexit deal through Parliament by the 29 March deadline.

She has been trying to secure changes to the backstop arrangement – the “insurance” policy to avoid a return to border checks on the island of Ireland.

The EU has reiterated it will not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement.

Read: Brexit: Theresa May ‘determined’ to leave EU in March

Mrs May is continuing to seek backing for her deal. She will tell Parliament she still believes it is possible to get a deal that MPs can support.

“By getting the changes we need to the backstop; by protecting and enhancing workers’ rights and environmental protections; and by enhancing the role of Parliament in the next phase of negotiations I believe we can reach a deal that this House can support,” she will say.

Mrs May is due to make a statement to MPs – a day earlier than had been expected – ahead of a debate on Thursday on the next steps for Brexit.

It comes after Parliament voted last month for the PM to find alternatives to the current backstop arrangement.

Speaking after a dinner with Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay on Monday night, EU negotiator Michel Barnier said the talks had been “constructive”, but added it was “clear from our side we’re not going to reopen the withdrawal agreement, but we will continue our discussions in the coming days”.

Read: Brexit: Theresa May faces ‘meaningful vote’ on her deal

Mr Barclay and Mr Barnier had agreed to further talks “in the coming days”, a statement from the Department for Exiting the European Union said.

Their teams would continue to work in the meantime “on finding a way forward”, it added.

    Analysis

By Laura Kuenssberg, BBC political editor

Look away now if you are of a nervous disposition.

This week’s Brexit votes may not come to much.

The prime minister is essentially asking for more time to get something to show for her promise of changes to the controversial backstop.

That might mean that she’s back before the end of this month with something concrete to vote on.

    Or it may well not.

I know that sounds nebulous, a word you might choose to use.

But there’s a building impression in Westminster, and in Brussels, that there simply won’t be a resolution to these months of indecision until weeks before, maybe even days before we are due to leave (that’s why some cabinet ministers believe that, even though it’s not desirable, the government may end up asking to extend the whole process as we discussed here before).

It also follows an exchange of letters between Mrs May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The Labour leader wrote to the PM on Wednesday with a list of five demands to secure his party’s support for her deal, including a permanent customs union.

The prime minister has struck a conciliatory tone in her response and said she looked forward to the two parties meeting again “as soon as possible” to discuss ways forward on Brexit.

But No 10 said it rejected any proposals to remain in a customs union with the EU.

Some of Mrs May’s cabinet colleagues also quashed the idea, with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox calling Mr Corbyn’s proposal a “dangerous delusion”.

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom said there was “no chance” of Mrs May accepting Labour’s Brexit vision, adding that the prime minister had been “absolutely clear” the UK was leaving the customs union.

Mrs May told the Labour leader: “It is good to see that we agree that the UK should leave the European Union with a deal and that the urgent task at hand is to find a deal that honours our commitments to the people of Northern Ireland, can command support in Parliament and can be negotiated with the EU – not to seek an election or second referendum.”

This is despite Mr Corbyn repeatedly saying there should be a general election if Mrs May cannot get a deal through Parliament. He has also faced pressure from some of his MPs to push for another public vote on Brexit.

Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said his “key question” about Mrs May’s response was: “Is she prepared to move her red lines and find a consensus?”

“I don’t see that in the letter,” he said.

“The point of the exercise was to say, look, there is a majority for a close economic relationship, if you’re prepared to try to find it, and I’ve said for some time we should test that by having a vote on a customs union.”

Labour MP Lisa Nandy told the BBC’s Politics Live that there were between 40 and 60 of her colleagues “who are actively looking for ways to support” a revised Brexit deal.

She said the government needed to “get serious” about policy on a customs union and guarantee to “legislate for the protections around workers’ rights”.

Mr Corbyn’s letter to the prime minister was “interesting in tone and substance”, Mr Barnier said.

Mr Barclay met a group of Tory MPs on Monday, ahead of his trip to Brussels, who are working on possible alternatives to the backstop.

Members of the Alternative Arrangements Working Group – including Conservative MPs Steve Baker, Marcus Fysh, Owen Paterson, Damian Green and Nicky Morgan – attended the meeting.

Mr Baker said the talks had been “constructive”.

  • Hakeem al-Araibi returns home to Australia after Thai detention

Refugee footballer Hakeem al-Araibi has returned home to Australia after two months of detention in Thailand.

The Bahraini citizen was detained in Bangkok in November while on honeymoon, at the request of Bahrain authorities.

Following international outcry and diplomatic pressure, the Arab kingdom ended its extradition attempt on Monday.

Hundreds of supporters cheered the arrival of the 25-year-old footballer at Melbourne Airport on Tuesday.

Wearing his team’s football jersey, al-Araibi told the crowd: “I would like to say thanks to Australia. It’s amazing to see all of the people here and all of the Australian people who supported me.”

The professional footballer and vocal critic of Bahrain authorities had fled to Australia in 2014 where he was granted political asylum.

Bahrain had sentenced him in absentia to 10 years for vandalising a police station, charges which he has denied.

The Arab kingdom had sought his extradition, but human rights groups warned that he risked torture if he was sent back.

    ‘Nightmare is over’

Hours before his return, his wife told the BBC she was deeply thankful for the lobbying efforts of the Australian government and public, and the international football community.

“I have had a smile all the time on my face and I can’t stop crying – I am just so happy,” said the 24-year-old, who does not wish to be named.

“I prayed and prayed that he would come back to me, and finally our nightmare is ending.”

Denied contact with her husband during his 10-week detention, she said she planned to “buy flowers and cake” to celebrate their reunion.

She also thanked Craig Foster, a TV host and former Australian national football captain who rallied the international football community, and sports bodies including Fifa and the International Olympic Committee to help secure a release.

Mr Foster, who escorted al-Araibi on his arrival, said the human rights victory marked “the beginning of a broader fight for the values of sport”.

“We fought for one soul because Hakeem represented everyone who suffers under tyranny,” he said in a statement.

The footballer plays for Melbourne team Pascoe Vale FC. Many of the team’s members were at the airport on Tuesday.

    ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

Hywel Griffith, BBC News in Melbourne

As he walked out of the airport arrival gates, Hakeem al-Araibi seemed astounded by the welcoming party that had gathered to greet him.

Some supporters had banners and posters baring his picture, others wore T-shirts with the campaign slogan #SaveHakeem.

They cheered as if greeting a cup-winning captain and sang one of football’s most poignant anthems, You’ll Never Walk Alone.

His case has shown the solidarity that exists across the game, as players and fans lobbied for his return.

But the apparent delay by Fifa in becoming involved has left the game’s governing body open to accusations of neglect and failing to stand by its own policy on human rights.

  • French media execs accused of cyber-bullying feminists

Several French media executives have been suspended or fired for allegedly co-ordinating online harassment through a private Facebook group.

The largely-male League du LOL (League of LOL) targeted women writers and feminist activists among others.

Dozens of people have shared their experience of cyber-bullying by the group since it was uncovered by the French left-wing newspaper Libération.

Two Libération journalists are among those suspended.

One, freelancer Vincent Glad who founded the group in 2009, apologised on Twitter (in French), saying that he now realised that “such practices were unacceptable and ‘LOL’ was not funny at all when it is done in a pack”.

Using mostly anonymous Twitter accounts, members of the group mocked fellow journalists – many of whom were women. They also made rape jokes, and shared pictures of individuals photoshopped over pornographic images.

Prominent journalists and writers including Nora Bouazzouni, Slate France reporter Lucile Bellan, and podcaster Mélanie Wanga all say they were targeted by the League of LOL.

In a tweet, science presenter Florence Porcel said that a group member called her phone, posing as an editor of a “prominent” news programme.

He interviewed her for a non-existent job and shared the audio of their conversation. “When the recording was made public, I cried of shame for three days,” said Porcel.

David Doucet, editor of French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, confessed to being behind the interview and publicly apologised to Ms Porcel.

Others implicated in the scandal include senior journalists and executives from major outlets including Slate France and public relations firm Publicis.

In a tweet, Libération’s online editor Alexandre Hervaud issued an apology for his involvement, but in a later post he attacked “those who jump with joy” at his predicament.

Liberation have suspended both Hervaud and Glad pending an internal investigation.

France’s minister for digital affairs, Mounir Mahjoubi, has described members of the “League of LOL” as “losers”.

“It is a group of guys high on their power at being able to make fun of other people. Except that their mockery had an effect in real life,” said Mr Mahjoubi.
