  • Haiti protesters call on President Jovenel Moise to quit

Opposition demonstrators in Haiti have burnt tyres and thrown stones, urging President Jovenel Moise to step down.

At least four people have been killed and dozens injured in four days of protests in the capital Port-au-Prince and other cities.

Many Haitians accuse Mr Moise and other officials of corruption. Thousands have taken to the streets this week.

The unrest has forced mayors in several cities to cancel carnival festivities due in early March.

Mr Moise – who has been in power since 2017 – has called for talks with the opposition, to no avail so far.

Opposition groups called for protests after a court report alleged that officials and former ministers had misappropriated development loans made by Venezuela to Haiti after 2008.

The report also suggested that President Moise had been involved in irregularities.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean and 60% of the population live on less than $2 (£1.53) a day.

  • Nissan cuts forecast in first results since Ghosn arrest

Japan’s Nissan has cut its full-year profit forecast in its first results since former chairman Carlos Ghosn’s arrest for financial misconduct.

The carmaker lowered its operating profit estimate to 450bn yen ($4.1bn; £3.2bn) from 540bn yen previously.

It comes as the Nissan-Renault alliance is being tested by the scandal surrounding Mr Ghosn.

The 64-year-old has been in prison since November after Nissan accused him of understating his pay.

Read: Japan court extends ex-Nissan chief Ghosn’s detention by 10 days

The cut to the full-year outlook came despite a rise in operating profit to 103.3bn yen for the three months to December, up from 82.4bn yen a year earlier.

But the Japanese carmaker revised its full-year forecasts “given the performance in the first nine months of the year”.

Over that period, it said global sales fell 2.1% “with growth in Japan, China and other markets offset by decreases in North America and Europe”.

    Post-Ghosn era

The results are the first to be published since the arrest of its former chairman.

Read: Carlos Ghosn: Former Nissan chair charged with financial misconduct

Mr Ghosn, the architect of the Renault-Nissan alliance, has been charged with financial misconduct and breach of trust.

He was sacked by Nissan after his arrest last year and resigned from Renault.

Renault and Nissan have pledged to continue their alliance. The new boss of Renault Jean-Dominique Senard will meet Nissan’s boss Hiroto Saikawa in Japan this week.

The BBC’s Tokyo correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes said all indications are that the Mr Senard and Mr Saikawa have very different views of what direction their post-Ghosn alliance should take.

  • British government sued over no-deal ferry contracts

The government is being sued for its decision to charter firms to run extra ferries, including one with no ships, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel, said the contracts, revealed after Christmas, were decided in a “secretive and flawed procurement process”.

The move comes days after Seaborne, one of the firms chosen, had its contract axed after its funding fell through.

The government said it had carried out a “competitive procurement process”.

“The Department for Transport acted transparently and competitively throughout the process of securing extra freight.

Read:U.S. lawmakers reach tentative deal to avoid government shutdown

“This was done by approaching ferry operators and encouraging bids that could be fairly assessed against each other,” a spokeswoman said.

At a High Court hearing in London, Eurotunnel claimed the government contracts, announced on 29 December, were awarded without any public notice.

Eurotunnel’s barrister Daniel Beard QC said Eurotunnel only found out “when contract notices were published three days after Christmas”.

He said it was “quite remarkable” his client had not been informed given its recent history in running cross-Channel services.

Ewan West, representing Transport Secretary Chris Grayling in court, said the government’s procurement process was only for “maritime freight” services and that Eurotunnel “could never have provided that capacity” and “could not have complied” with the terms of the contracts.

Judge Peter Fraser ruled a four-day trial will begin on 1 March given the “obvious” urgency of the case and the “very important public interest matters” involved.

When the Department for Transport announced the contracts in December, in documents outlining the agreements it stated that an “unforeseeable” situation of “extreme urgency” meant there was no time for the contracts to be put out to tender – the standard practice for public procurements.

However, the BBC understands that a number of firms were considered and there was a private negotiation process.

Three suppliers were awarded a total of £102.9m in late December, aimed at easing “severe congestion” at Dover, in the case of a no-deal Brexit:

    * £46.6m to the French company Brittany Ferries

    * £42.5m (€47.3m) to Danish shipping firm DFDS

    * £13.8m to British firm Seaborne Freight

The decision to award a contract to Seaborne, a firm with no ships which the BBC found had never run a ferry service before, has been heavily criticised.

After Seaborne’s contract collapsed Mr Grayling faced calls for his resignation, with Labour accusing him of “rewriting the textbook on incompetence.”.

But Prime Minister Theresa May has said she continues to have full confidence in him.

He, however, lauded the government on starting the debate on the reviewing the curriculum of education in the country rather than dwell on the number of years spent at the university by students for their first-degree programmes.

  • Medical drone centre to be sited in Suhum

The first drone centre for the distribution of essential medical supplies including blood, will be sited in a town 5km from Suhum by March 2019.

Dominase, the town to house the drone centre, will house 148 essential medicines and blood.

The Head of System Integration at Zipline Ghana says 20 operational drones will be used to serve health facilities within Eastern, Central and some parts of Greater Accra Region.

Read: Ace Ankomah writes on medical drones

“Once we have the center built up and ready. We hope to be able to do an official launch and start offering the service to the facility within the vicinity sometime before 2020,” Daniel Marfo told a team of journalists including JoyNews’ Matilda Wemegah, who were given a guided tour of the drone programme in Rwanda.

The government has often cited Rwanda as a successful test case for the implementation of the drone delivery of essential medication and blood to rural areas.

This is because, the company behind the innovation, Zipline, implemented the project first in Rwanda where the supply of medication in some areas has been reduced from 5 hours to 20minutes.

Mr. Marfo debunked suggestions that the done project will replace existing medical shipment and supply chain. In his words, it will “complement it.”

“The drone service does not replace anything within the health service. It complements it and brings further improvement.”

Read: Kennedy Agyapong rubbishes medical drones

He explained this further: “So, for instance, all the health facilities in Ghana receive periodic shipment of medicines and supplies. We are not replacing that process. It is an existing supply chain.  But what happens is that despite your best planning there are times you run shot of a product for various reasons.

There could be bad weather, rainfall, where the road becomes so bad and unmotorable. These are the points where you need supplies to come to you on an emergency basis. So that you can fill in the gab while you await your regular supply.

however, the project which is expected to cost 12.5-million-dollars has come under intense criticism from even the Ghana medical Association who claim that they were not consulted. While the Association insists it is not against the use of technology in its service delivery it insists the drone delivery services are not a priority.

In a statement they argued, “The proposed services to be provided by the drones do not conform to the primary healthcare policy in Ghana where different levels of care have different capacities to perform specific functions.

“The use of drones without the necessary improvement in the human resource capacity will not inure to the benefit of the country in its quest to improve healthcare delivery,” The GMA said.

The clash has raised tensions in the area, as some residents fear there may be reprisal attacks.

The Upper West Regional police commander, DCOP Otchere Boapeah, in an interview with Citi News said three people have been picked up by his outfit in connection with the incident.

He further revealed that the Wa East District Security Council has convened an emergency meeting to find a lasting solution.

“We have taken steps to restore calm in the area. As I talk to you there is an emergency meeting going on at Funsi. We expect that the outcome of the meeting will calm the tension in the area”.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the two dead persons have been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Rosewood logging is banned in the Upper West region. However, illegal logging is currently ongoing in almost all the eleven districts of the region.

The practice is being led by Chinese nationals who contract locals to illegally harvest the product for a fee. Officials of the Forestry Commission will not comment on the menace.

Citi News can report that the clash in Funsi is but one of several unsuccessful community agitations to halt harvest of rosewood in the Upper West Region.

Most community members argue that the region is ecologically fragile, hence the harvest of rosewood is increasingly exposing the region to desertification.

  • Asamoah Gyan is my idol – Dauda Mohammed

Ghanaian forward Dauda Mohammed has picked Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan as his football idol.
The former Asante Kotoko forward says he learns a lot from the ex-Sunderland attacker and wants to follow his career footpath.

Read: Asamoah Gyan rubbishes reports he will buy a club in native Wenchi

Dauda joined Vitesse Arnhem on loan from Belgium giants Anderlecht in the winter transfer window, where looks to get more play time.

“My big idol is Asamoah Gyan, the captain of the Ghanaian national team. He was the African with the most goals at the World Cup and is the top scorer of all times of the Ghanaian team,” he told the De Telegraaf.

My game is similar to his. He is also a fast, easily scoring player. I like to watch his matches, because I can learn a lot from that. I hope to be able to follow in his footsteps,” he added.

Despite struggling to break into the first team of Anderlecht, the striker explains the Purple and White rather went with the more experienced players.

“I made 29 goals in 25 games, but I did not play a lot in the first. Some coaches have the principle that they prefer to work with experienced players. As a young player you will then have difficulty playing minutes. At Vitesse I hope to get it now. I am not only a fast player, but also an attacker who easily scores.”

  • Hundreds demonstrate in Nkoranza over siting of Regional capital

Hundreds of protestors in the Nkoranza Municipality of the newly created Bono East Region on Monday hit the streets to register their protest over what they described as “sidelined of the Nkoranza township as the capital of the new region”.

There is an uneasy calm over the siting of the capital town of the newly created Bono East Region.

Clad in red armbands and head gears, the demonstrators held placards with inscription such as “Dan Botwe you are bias”, “this is elimination by rough tactics”, “Nick Danso Abeam you are our only hope”, and “Nkoranza Traditional Area has the highest votes in the referendum”.

According to the protestors, they did not understand why the Ministry of Regional Re-organisation and Development and the Brong-Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council failed to invite the Nkoranza Traditional Area to several meetings organised in connection with the siting of the capital.

They believed the purported sidelining of Nkoranza was orchestrated by politicians well connected with the creation of Bono East region.

Addressing the protestors at the Nkoranza old lorry station, Nana Okofo Agyapong IV, the Adontenhene of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, commended the government in her bid to create the new regions in the country, which would push development.

But he emphasised that “if the capital of the Bono East region was not located at a place convenient for the chiefs and people of the region, it would have serious consequences on the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party in Election 2020”.

Flanked by other members of the Nkoranza Traditional Area, Nana Agyapong IV regretted that although the issue of the siting of the regional capital was not discussed before the referendum, Osaedeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw II, the Paramount Chief of Techiman Traditional Area made many public statements to the effect that Techiman was going to be selected and named as the regional capital.

This is because the chiefs and people of Techiman touted in social and some traditional media outlets that they initiated the idea of the proposed creation of the Bono East Region.

“It is important to note that 14 paramountcies signed the petition for the creation of the Bono East region. Although all the paramountcies are traditionally equal, Nkoranza paramountcy is the biggest in terms of population, polling stations, and land size” Nana Agyapong IV explained.

A UN judicial expert says the Nigerian President broke international rules when he recently suspended the country’s Chief Justice.

President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Walter Onnoghen last month over allegations that the judge had failed to declare his assets.

The UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Diego Garcia-Sayan, said such a decision should be taken by an independent judicial council or a court.

He said dismissing judges without following legal procedures was incompatible with the independence of the judiciary.

The suspension of the Chief Justice has drawn international criticism.

As Nigeria’s top judge he could play a key role in any disputes that arise from this weekend’s elections.

  • US shutdown looms as border talks stall ahead of deadline

US congressional talks over a border security deal have stalled raising the chances of another government shutdown.

Negotiators were hoping for a deal by Monday to give Congress time to pass legislation by Friday, when the federal funding agreement runs out.

They remain divided on how many undocumented immigrants can be detained and funding for President Trump’s promised border wall with Mexico.

The previous shutdown, lasting 35 days, was the longest in US history.

Hundreds of thousands of workers were furloughed while others in essential services, such as hospital care, air traffic control and law enforcement, worked without pay.

Read: US shutdown talks stall ahead of deadline

The cost to the US economy was estimated at $11bn (£8.5bn).

It was unclear how the negotiators would try to reach a deal as no further talks were scheduled, Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed source as saying.
What is the latest impasse about?

The 17 Republican and Democratic negotiators from the Senate and the House have been holding talks to reach a border security agreement that can be accepted by Congress.

The latest impasse seems to be centred on a Democratic demand to limit the number of undocumented migrants already in the US who can be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Democrats planned to cap the number of beds at detention centres at 16,500.

By doing that, they hoped to force ICE to focus on detaining irregular migrants with criminal records instead of those who have overstayed their visas and, Democrats say, are productive and offer no threat.

They had also been looking at between $1.3bn and $2bn in funding for Mr Trump’s proposed border wall, a long way off the $5.7bn the president has been demanding.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, President Trump said the Democrats were “behaving, all of a sudden, irrationally.”

Read: Trump announces deal to lift shutdown

Lead Republican negotiator Sen Richard Shelby told Fox News: “I’ll say 50-50 we get a deal… The spectre of a shutdown is always out there.”

However one of the Democratic negotiators said there was still hope that a deal could be reached in time to avoid a new shutdown. Jon Tester told Fox News Sunday: “Negotiations seldom go smooth all the way through.”
Why is there a risk of another shutdown?

On 25 January President Trump agreed to a three-week spending deal to end the shutdown and allow Congress to reach an agreement.

That funding ends at midnight on Friday. Another short-term deal could prevent a new shutdown, according to the New York Times.

Mr Trump – who has suggested the talks are a “waste of time” – made building a wall on the border with Mexico one of his key promises in the 2016 campaign.

He has backed away from his calls to make Mexico pay for a concrete wall but during his State of the Union speech last Tuesday – delayed because of the previous shutdown – he insisted on a “smart, strategic, see-through steel barrier”.

The president has previously threatened to declare a national emergency and fund the wall without Congress. But the idea is disliked even by some fellow Republicans.

Mr Trump said on Saturday the wall would “get built one way or the other!”
What would happen in a shutdown?

Federal agencies including the Homeland Security, State, Agriculture and Commerce Departments could lose access to money and begin to close down again, affecting about 800,000 federal employees, who would go unpaid.

During a shutdown, essential services – including border protection, hospital care, air traffic control, law enforcement and power grid maintenance – continue to operate, with workers being required to show up.

Last time, some employees continued to work unpaid but many others called in sick.

  • What’s next for Abdul Baba Rahman?

Not long ago Abdul Baba Rahman was considered as the hottest young talent when it came to the left back position. His services were in high demand and Chelsea considered themselves lucky to win the fight for his signature. They paid a reported fee of £22 million, which made him one of the most expensive purchases in the 2015 summer transfer window.

However, the full back didn’t live up to his potential and after a series of injuries and poor performances, he lost his place in the Chelsea side once Conte was appointed as manager.

From then on it was rough sailing for the talented Ghanaian who must have felt like he was playing a game of roulette with injuries. The rupture to his cruciate ligament which he suffered while playing for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations against Uganda was particularly serious and could have left him crippled for life. He would have been happier to play here that game of roulette, but luck has not been on his side and he made only a handful of appearances after that injury back in early 2017.

    Record Breaking Numbers

But it was not always like that. When Baba Rahman transferred to Germany early in his career to play for Greuter Furth and then Augsburg, many saw that raw potential in his game. In his second season he had sensational numbers while playing on the left flank for Augsburg, a team that, much like Baba, was surprising everyone with their performances.

Augsburg had their highest ever Bundesliga finish that year and managed to climb all the way to 5th spot. Most of the credit for those superb performances was laid on Baba Rahman’s door step.

That season, Rahman was making scintillating runs down the left flank and was a constant danger with his pin point crosses. In addition to that, Baba also pitched in with a terrific successful tackle rate of 83%, one of the highest in the Bundesliga. Out of the 108 tackles he attempted he won an amazing 90. When you add the 83 interceptions and overall quality aerial play for a full back, you could see why so many people got so excited about Baba’s future.

Can He Recapture His Early Career Promise?

Those numbers may not have been replicated in resulting seasons with Chelsea and Schalke 04, but it is clear that the potential is still there for Abdul Baba Rahman.

He is still relatively young and if he avoids injuries and looks after his body, he can hope for at least 10 years of top quality football. However, for that to become a reality, the Ghanaian international will have to work his socks off to get to his previous levels.

He has already spoken about his intentions to become the best left back in the world so he is not lacking ambition, that’s for sure. All he has to do now is work hard, something that he has already promised to do and then hope that that game of roulette with injuries will finally favour him.

To achieve even the smallest of goals, and to get through life’s daily duties and responsibilities, you have to have some self-confidence. The importance of developing a self-confident attitude allows you to wade through the push and pull of different voices and opinions telling you, “yes, no, maybe, do this, do that”, etc. Relying on other people to guide you and following their opinions robs you of your individuality, makes you unsure of yourself and can lead to depression.

Self-confidence is an attitude that you hold about yourself that allows you to move forward and achieve your goals. An article on self-confidence from the counseling center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign defines self-confidence as having a positive attitude, but with realistic views. They note that a self-confident person has a general sense of control of her own life, and can do what she wishes, plans and expects. Self-confidence means that even if things don’t go your way, you still believe that eventually, somehow, some way, they will.

    Developing Self-Confidence

The University of Illinois article notes that your parents may have instilled self-confidence in you by encouraging self-reliance and giving you love even when you made mistakes. If you did not have your parents’ help, you can accomplish this yourself. Anthony Robbins states in his book, “Awaken the Giant Within,” that developing his confidence comes from mastering his ability to feel certain that he really could achieve something. His rule is, “If I decide to be confident, then I’ll feel that way toward anything, and my confidence will help me succeed.”

    Visualize

Sitting quietly with your eyes closed and mentally visualizing yourself in great detail as a confident person is a great way to start being confident. In his book, “Unleash the Champion,” Denny Dicke says that visualizing is the most effective tool for building confidence and belief. After repeatedly visualizing yourself being and acting confident, and achieving what you wish by confidently going after it, Dicke notes that when it does come time to move with confidence, you will act confidently because your mind sees this as familiar ground.

    Overcoming Negative Thoughts

There are several strategies to overcoming those negative thoughts that keep you trapped in lack of confidence. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign article cites four tips. First, emphasize strengths by giving yourself credit. Second, take risks by looking at new experiences as a chance to learn, not win or lose. Third, use self-talk by stopping in the middle of a negative thought, and reframing it with a positive thought or words. Fourth self-evaluation allows you to gain a stronger sense of self, and stop giving away your personal power to others.

    Move Forward With Confidence

Becoming self-confident does not mean you are unrealistic about yourself and your situation. You understand that you are not Superman, but being confident means still moving forward toward your goal achievement and desires even when things don’t seem to be going your way. Using positive self-talk such as that of 1992 Olympic gold medal winner in singles tennis, Jennifer Capriati who said to herself, “I can do this! I am the best!”, can really help get you through times of doubt, and help you to maintain that feeling of self-confidence.

The Black Satellites of Ghana are expected to arrive in the country on Tuesday from Niger after they were eliminated from the on-going Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

The team exited their hotel base on Sunday as stipulated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rules and have lodged at a new hotel where they have been waiting for their departure.

Footballghana.com understands the team was expected to arrive on Monday but there have been difficulties in getting a flight to Accra.

  • Black Satellites team should not be condemned – Frimpong Manson

Former coach and player of Asante Kotoko Frimpong Manso has come to the defense of Head coach Jimmy Cobblah and the Black Satellites team after their abysmal performance in the on-going U-20 AFRICA Cup of Nations which saw the team exit the competition.

The Black Satellites needed at least a draw to qualify for the last four of the competition when they engaged Mali in the final round of the group.

Jimmy Cobblah’s side, however, failed to do the needful as Mali beat them 1-0 to dash their hopes of qualifying for the U20 FIFA World Cup in Poland.

Several football pundits have chastised the team for their display at the mundial, but Frimpong-Manso has leaped to the defense of the team claiming that they are not the worst squad ever.

“I will agree with the coach in a sense that, his preparation started during the WAFU and he realised some of the players were not fit during the WAFU so he had to invite new players, he told Asempa FM.

“With the new set of players he had to start new preparations. In a way I will agree with him in a sense that he didn’t get ample time to prepare the team. In football, if the results are not positive, you are going to be blamed.”

“We cannot say this team is the worst U-20 team. Some coaches were not able to qualify the team to the tournament.”

“We have to look at the individual qualities in the team and promote those players to U-23. They shouldn’t be neglected. We shouldn’t condemn the players and the team, he added.

  • Kotoko coach C.K Akunnor demands improved defending in Zesco clash

Asante Kotoko coach Charles Kwablan Akunor says his side must put up a better defensive performance in their game against Zesco United on Wednesday.

The Porcupine Warriors host the Zambian champions at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi after losing their first game to Al Hilal in Sudan.

A defeat that left C.K Akunnor furious, following the poor defending that led to Hilal’s goal.

“I’ve discussed our defensive frailties with our defenders but it’s not their sole duty to defend. When the opponent has the ball, the ability of players upfront to defend without the ball can be equally crucial to the team’s resistance to conceding goals,” he told Sikka Sports.

Kotoko have signed two more players for the group stages of the competition.

Striker Zabo Teguy joins from Manzini Wanderers with Habib Mohammed joining from Ashantigold.

Coach Akunor is unsure if both will be available for selection on Wednesday.

  • Grammy highlights: Steamy duets and Dolly’s delights

This year’s Grammys were dominated by Lady Gaga, Kacey Musgraves and Childish Gambino, who won four awards but was absent from the ceremony.

Musgraves won the coveted album of the year and best country album for Golden Hour while Gaga got two prizes for Shallow, from the movie A Star Is Born won two.

Gambino’s powerful This is America won song of the year and record of the year.

There was also some British success with Dua Lipa winning best new artist and Ella Mai winning best R&B song for Bood’s Up.

Here are some other stand out moments from the awards.

Camila kicks things off in style

Demonstrating the power and prominence of Latin Pop, the opening number was a huge, West Side Story-inspired extravaganza, starring Camila Cabello, Ricky Martin, J Balvin and renowned Cuban-American trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

Cabello got the party started, performing Havana in a mock-up of her grandmother’s childhood home in a canary yellow two-piece dress. After an intricate piece of handkerchief choreography (yes, that’s a thing) Cabello ceded the stage to Martin, who performed his 2006 hit Pegate, followed by international sensation Balvin, with his smash Mi Gente.

Flanked by dozens of dancers and a full Cuban salsa band, the performance sizzled and sparkled – throwing down a gauntlet to every other artist on the bill.

If only the Grammys had scheduled it a year earlier, when Cabello and Balvin’s songs were current and award-eligible, it would have been a masterstroke.

    Kacey Musgraves tops the leaderboard

For the dual crimes of being musically progressive and female, Kacey Musgraves was essentially frozen out by the country music establishment, which makes her album of the year win at the Grammys all the more delectable.

The victorious album, Golden Hour, is a sensual and emotionally-candid record, written as she fell for her now-husband, Ruston Kelly, who she says opened her mind “to a kind of love I never really envisioned for myself”.

Although the record flirts with other genres, incorporating elements of psychedelia and disco, it’s the timeless songcraft that will have won over the voters.

“I would have nothing without songs,” said the star. “It’s all about the songs.”

Drake finally appears – and rejects the concept of awards shows

Image result for Drake finally appears - and rejects the concept of awards shows

Drake notoriously boycotted previous Grammy ceremonies, withholding his records from consideration because he felt he was being unfairly sidelined in the rap categories.

This year, he declined to perform despite an invitation from producers, so it must have seemed like a coup when he agreed to turn up on stage to accept the best rap song (natch) award for God’s Plan.

    Think again.

“I want to take a moment to talk to the kids who want to do music,” he said. “I want to let you know that you play in an opinion-based sport. This a business where it’s sometimes up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed-raced kid from Canada might have to say.

“The point is, you’ve already won if people are singing your songs word for word. If there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain and the snow to see your show, you’ve already won.” (There may have been more but he was cut off mid-speech.)

I bet he puts the award on his mantelpiece anyway.

    Women take centre stage

Following criticism that women were sidelined at the 2018 Grammys, this year’s ceremony established its feminist credentials right from the beginning.

Host Alicia Keys invited “my sisters” Lady Gaga, Jada Pinket-Smith and Jennifer Lopez onto the stage, alongside Michaelle Obama, who towered over them all.

They each told a personal story of how music changed their life, with J-Lo saying it “kept me moving from the Bronx to the big screen and the even bigger stages.”

When it came to her turn, the former First Lady was drowned out by applause, and had to restart her speech.

“From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side, to the Who Run The World songs that fuelled me through the last decade, music helps me tell my story,” she said.

“Music helps us share ourselves, our dignities and our sorrows. Music shows us all of it matters, every story with every voice, every note in every song.”

“Put your hands back in the air, don’t be lazy”

Once a diva, always a diva, forever Ms Ross.

Dua Lipa and St Vincent get steamy

The pop stars’ erotically-charged, serpentine performance gave off more sparks than a toaster on the fritz.

St Vincent took to the stage first, showing off her inestimable guitar skills on a solo version of Masseduction. When Dua emerged from the shadows, they tarried on an excerpt of Aretha Franklin’s Respect, ending with the British star purring “sock it to me” and launching into One Kiss.

St Vincent scrawled fuzztone guitar over the formerly-pristine club hit, and it all got rather hot under the collar. Though not too hot as to trouble the censors.

Bebe Rexha manages to get a dress

Two weeks before the Grammys, best new artist nominee Bebe Rexha publicly criticised a number of designers for refusing to dress her because she was “too big”.

In a candid Instagram video, the star said fashion houses wouldn’t work with her because she’s a size 8 (UK size 12). In the aftermath, she received offers from Karl Lagerfeld and Monsoori, who she wore on the red carpet on Sunday.

“I feel like a princess,” she said. “I just did the video because I was heart-broken and I was really bummed out. I love my body and I want other girls to love their body.”

According to Google, Rexha’s dress was the most-searched gown of the night.

    Alicia Keys shows off

What’s the point of hosting an awards show if you can’t use it for ridiculous wish fulfilment.

Alicia Keys opened the second half of the Grammy ceremony sandwiched between two grand pianos, (one black, one white) playing Scott Joplin’s Maple Rag Leaf with one hand on each keyboard.

“I always wanted to play two pianos,” grinned the irritatingly dextrous star, before playing some of the songs that have inspired her through the years, including Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable, Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly, Ella Mai’s Boo’d Up, Lauryn Hill’s Doo Wop (That Thing) and Kings Of Leon’s Use Somebody.

“Who doesn’t wish they’d written this song?” she asked of each of song.

“And then finally, you write the song you wished you’d wrote,” she added, launching into Empire State Of Mind, her hit single with Jay-Z.

    Cardi B makes history

A former stripper and Instagram personality, Cardi B arrived at rapping late in the day – but she grasped the opportunity with both hands. After scoring major crossover hits with Bodak Yellow, I Like It and the Bruno Mars collaboration Finesse, she made history on Sunday by becoming the first solo female to win best rap album.

As she says on the single Money – which she performed on Sunday – “I heard that Cardi went pop / That’s me bustin’ they bubble”.

    Gaga chokes back the tears

The first televised prize of the night went to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, whose song Shallow (from A Star Is Born) won best pop duet.

Holding back tears, Gaga paid tribute to her co-star “who’s over at the Baftas in the UK” – where A Star Is Born also won best music.

“I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” the star added.

“A lot of artists deal with that and we gotta take care of each other. So if you see someone that’s hurting, don’t look away.”

    Dolly’s all-star tribute

Image result for Dolly's all-star tribute

A who’s who of country music joined Dolly Parton, who’s been named the Grammys’ “person of the year”. Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Little Big Town, Katy Perry and Parton’s goddaughter Miley Cyrus took the stage for a feel-good run-through of her biggest hits, including 9 to 5 and Jolene.

The highlight was a cover of Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, with Parton, Cyrus and Morris harmonising flawlessly in a spine-tingling a capella breakdown.

But why did no-one consider calling the segment “Dolly’s mixtures”?

    J-Lo’s monstrous Motown mash-up

With a stunning acrobatic display, Jennifer Lopez paid tribute to the iconic US record label Motown with a medley of hits, including Dancing In The Street, Do You Love Me and Papa Was A Rolling Stone.

She was joined briefly by Smokey Robinson (for My Girl), Alicia Keys and Ne-Yo but this was entirely J-Lo’s show, dazzling in a diamante leotard and a feather-trimmed dress, as she pulled off a series of death-defying lifts and kicks.

“This is the music we listened to, me and my mom and my sisters,” she said, recalling how they used to dance around the house, pretending to be The Supremes.

“I grew up on Motown and the musicals. I think that’s why I’m the performer I am today.”

The late singer’s children, Toni and Christopher, took to the stage early on in the evening to accept the award for When Bad Does Good which won best rock performance.

Wearing a t-shirt with her famous father – who took his own life in 2017 at the age of 52 – Toni said: “I never thought we’d be standing here without my dad, he’d be proud and honoured, he was many things, a rock icon, the godfather of grunge”.

Christopher called his “one of the greatest poets of his time, the voice of a generation”.

  • Black Satellites coach Jimmy Cobblah blames lack of domestic football on early exit at AYC

Black Satellites coach Jimmy Cobblah believes his side suffered early elimination at the Africa Youth Championship because of the lack of domestic football in Ghana.

  • Rastafarian ‘god’ Haile Selassie gets African statue

A statue of Ethiopia’s last emperor has been unveiled outside the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The likeness of Haile Selassie is being given pride of place outside the $200m (£154m) building in recognition for his role in establishing its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

But that might not be the first thing that springs to mind on hearing the name Haile Selassie. The name is perhaps more easily connected with Jamaican singer Bob Marley and Rastafarians.

So who exactly is Haile Selassie, and how did he come to be worshipped as a god by people living thousands of miles away?

First things first: why is he getting a statue?

Haile Selassie was more than 30 years into his reign when he helped establish the OAU. Its first meeting, in May 1963, was held in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia – which has never been colonised although it was subjected to a five-year military occupation by Mussolini’s Italy – had served as a symbol of African independence throughout the colonial period.

Now other countries were finally gaining independence, and this was a chance to bring nations together to fight against colonisation and white minority rule while also co-ordinating efforts to raise living standards and defend their sovereignty.

“May this convention of union last 1,000 years,” Selassie, who spent a year preparing the city for the meeting, told the gathered delegates.

As it happened, the OAU ceased to exist in its original form in 2002, replaced by the African Union (AU).

But his role in establishing the union has not been forgotten, and the statue is a way for the AU to recognise Selassie’s contribution.

So, how exactly did he come to be seen as a god?

Haile Selassie was Ethiopia’s last emperor

It all comes down to his coronation in 1930, and a “prophecy” made by a Jamaican black rights campaigner, Marcus Garvey, a decade earlier.

Garvey had told his followers in 1920 they should “look to Africa, when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand”.
So, when a black man called Ras Tafari was crowned in Ethiopia, many saw that as a sign the prophecy had come true.

In East Africa, Ras Tafari (“chief” Tafari) became Haile Selassie (“power of the trinity”). Almost 8,000 miles away in the West Indies, Haile Selassie became God (or Jah) incarnate – the redeeming messiah – and Ethiopia, the promised land.

In short, the Rastafari movement was born.

Did Selassie believe it himself? Well, he certainly didn’t try to dispel the belief when he visited Jamaica in 1966. The emperor was greeted by thousands, desperate to get a glimpse of their god. Among the devotees was the wife of a young Reggae musician, Bob Marley, who was away in the US.

Rita Marley would later describe how she saw nail marks on Selassie’s palm as he waved at her. It was a moment of religious awakening, and when her husband returned, they embraced the belief.

Three years earlier, Rastafarians had begun to move to Ethiopia and a piece of land Selassie had put aside for black people from the West in 1948. After the visit, the numbers grew larger. Today, the community numbers about 300 people.

But followers were presented with a conundrum after Selassie died in 1975, a year after he was deposed in a Marxist revolution. After all, gods cannot die.

This was resolved after it was argued Selassie’s body was just his earthly body.

Also, it should be noted, Garvey was never a believer. In fact, he was a critic of Selassie.

    What was he really like?

Rastafarians believe Haile Selassie was the messiah

Opinion is still split over whether Selassie was good for Ethiopia or not.

A Human Rights Watch report accuses him of acting with “official indifference” to famines in various regions of the country and attempting to conceal the famine of 1972-72, in which an estimated 200,000 people died.

He is also known to have violently cracked down on people who opposed him during his reign.

Marcus Garvey was unimpressed after he fled Ethiopia in 1936 following the invasion of Benito Mussolini’s troops a year earlier, describing Selassie as a “coward” and calling him out for “the terrors of slavery”. The practice was not outlawed in Ethiopia until 1942.

Academic Dr Yohannes Woldemariam has gone as far as to argue that Selassie should be remembered as a dictator. Indeed, he created a constitution which placed all the power in his hands and those of his descendents.

But his supporters argue he was a great leader and moderniser, who was one of the first African leaders to become a figure on the global stage.

Selassi’s statue joins that of Ghana’s President Kwame Nkrumah, another AU founder

His appeal to the League of Nations after his country was invaded is still remembered today – not least because it forms the basis of Bob Marley’s 1976 song, War.

What’s more, he was not made emperor through a chance of birth. Although born into a noble family in 1892, he was only named leader after impressing Menelik III with his intelligence.

And – as the AU’s statue to him reminds people – he was a great advocate for pan-African cooperation, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to have an effect on millions of people across the continent today.

Indonesian police have apologised for using a snake to terrify a suspected thief after footage appeared online.

The local police chief said it was unprofessional but defended the practice, saying the snake was tame and non-venomous.

“We have taken stern action against the personnel,” Tonny Ananda Swadaya reportedly said in a statement, adding that the officers had not physically beaten the man.

They had acted on their own initiative to try to draw a confession from the suspect, he said.

Human rights lawyer Veronica Koman tweeted footage of the event, claiming officers had recently put a pro-Papua independence activist in a cell with a snake.

A voice in the video reportedly threatens to put the snake in the man’s mouth and down his trousers.

  • Hungary tries for baby boom with tax breaks and loan forgiveness

Hungarian women with four children or more will be exempted for life from paying income tax, the prime minister has said, unveiling plans designed to boost the number of babies being born.

It was a way of defending Hungary’s future without depending on immigration, Viktor Orban said.

The right-wing nationalist particularly opposes immigration by Muslims.

Hungary’s population is falling by 32,000 a year, and women there have fewer children than the EU average.

As part of the measures, young couples will be offered interest-free loans of 10 million forints ($36,000), to be cancelled once they have three children.

Mr Orban said that “for the West”, the answer to falling birth rates in Europe was immigration: “For every missing child there should be one coming in and then the numbers will be fine.

“Hungarian people think differently,” he said. “We do not need numbers. We need Hungarian children.”

While Mr Orban was delivering his state of the nation address, the latest demonstrations were being held in Budapest against his government’s policies.

About 2,000 people gathered in front of his office and others blocked one of the main bridges across the Danube river.

Correspondents say the biggest applause during his speech was for his announcement of a seven-point plan to increase the fertility rate.

Other points in the government’s plan include:

    * A pledge to create 21,000 nursery places over the next three years

    * An extra $2.5bn to be spent on the country’s healthcare system

    * Housing subsidies

    * State support for those buying seven-seat vehicles

Mr Orban finished his speech with: “Long live Hungary and long live the Hungarians!”

The average number of children a Hungarian woman will have in her lifetime (fertility rate) is 1.45. This puts the country below the EU average of 1.58.

France has the highest fertility rate in the EU – 1.96 – and Spain the lowest at 1.33.

Niger in West Africa has the highest fertility rate in the world, with 7.24 children per woman.
