  • Reddit: Censorship fears spark criticism of Tencent funding reports

A reported investment by Chinese tech giant Tencent in Reddit has sparked a backlash on the popular community news site over censorship fears.

Last week reports said that Tencent would be investing $150m (£115m) into the platform.

China has a strict internet censorship regime known as the Great Firewall and Reddit is among the sites it blocks.

The proposed funding prompted a wave of criticism on Reddit, which many of its users see as a bastion of free speech.

Most analysts agree that it is unlikely Tencent or any other such investor would be able to control what content is posted on the site but that hasn’t stopped a stream of memes and protest messages appearing in the past few days.

The Reddit platform allows users to share links on any conceivable subject, which are then up-or down-voted, meaning the most popular content surfaces to the top and is more prominent.

The platform has 330 million active users and describes itself as the “Front Page of the Internet”.

Along with sites like Facebook and Twitter, Reddit is inaccessible in China as part of the country’s Great Firewall.

The government’s internet censorship regime uses a series of technical measures to block foreign platforms and controversial content.

China-based messaging services -including Tencent-owned WeChat – and social media are restricted, with key words and expressions blocked if they express dissent or ridicule senior political leaders.

So the report prompted some concerns among the Reddit community that the site may even face content restrictions outside China in the future.

    Winnie the Pooh memes

In recent days Reddit users shared images of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protest and Winnie the Pooh in reference to concerns a tie-up with the Chinese firm would lead to stricter content controls.

In the past, Chinese authorities have blocked information related to the crackdown against protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on the anniversary of the event. Search terms such as “six four” – a reference to the date of the event 4 June and “never forget” when typed into Chinese search engines have not returned any results.

Winnie the Pooh has also been blocked at times on Chinese social media sites as bloggers compare the cartoon character to the country’s President Xi Jinping.

One popular post by FreeSpeechWarrior featuring an image of a man stopping tanks in Tiananmen Square was up-voted on the site more than 200,000 times.

A separate post from user BonZZil17 said: “Thanks for the money Tencent, now here’s Tank man from the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989.”

Another, posted by ChristopherVDV, shared an image of Winnie the Pooh citing Tencent’s investment had been up-voted more than 37,000 times.

“Given that Reddit just took a $150 million investment from a Chinese censorship powerhouse, I thought it would be nice to post this picture of Winnie-The-Pooh before our new glorious overlords decide we cannot post it anymore,” the post read.

Still, the level of Tencent’s proposed funding falls far short of full control. A $150m investment represents a fraction of the site’s value, which is thought to be worth as much as $2.7bn.

Taipei-based independent tech analyst Sam Reynolds said while some scepticism of Chinese technology firms was “warranted,” Tencent did not pose any risk to Reddit.

“Tencent has invested in hundreds of companies and there’s been little involvement or interest from China’s state apparatus.”

Mr Reynolds added that Reddit “simply isn’t on the radar of censors”.

  • NDC Council of Elders express disgust at brutality

The Council of Elders of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed disgust at the unprovoked brutality unleased on supporters of the party at the residence of the parliamentary candidate of the party, Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong, in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Read: CHRAJ, Ghana Armed Forces dump tortured boy 3 years after ‘military brutality’

“The NDC is horrified by the unprovoked brutality unleashed by the operatives of the National Security on NDC supporters at the residence of the NDC parliamentary candidate during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election held on January 31, 2019,” a statement signed and issued by the Vice-Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, said.

    Blaming the NDC?

The statement added that the council was equally scandalised by attempts to blame the NDC for the mayhem, saying that it defied logic and common sense.

It asked: “How could the NDC unleash such savagery on its own candidate and supporters?

Read: ‘Irresponsible Akufo-Addo should’ve visited Ayawaso victims before travelling’ – Agalga

According to the party, brutalities of that nature devalued the image of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and bastardised his commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

“They post definite threat to the nation and its fledging democracy and lay the foundation for mayhem in future elections. They undermine investor confidence that would lead to economic stagnation,” the statement said.

    Rein them in

The Council of Elders of the NDC, therefore, called on President Akufo-Addo to rein in and disband vigilante groups as a matter of extreme urgency and to do everything in his power to preserve peace in the nation.

“The President must allow the established security services of the nation to do their professional work,” it said.

It also called on the IGP to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and redeem the image of the Police by ensuring maximum punishment for those involved.

  • Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga and Kacey Musgraves dominate Grammys

Dua Lipa won best new artist, and Kacey Musgraves took home album of the year at a female-first Grammy Awards.

Musgraves won four prizes in total for Golden Hour, her critically-acclaimed third album, which blends country with elements of psychedelia.

She dedicated the award to “my sweet husband” with whom she fell in love as she recorded the album.

Dua said she was “nervous and grateful” as she accepted her award, one of the night’s four biggest prizes.

The 23-year-old paid tribute to the “incredible” line-up of “so many female artists” in the category, adding: “I guess this year we’ve really stepped up.”

The comment was a dig at Grammys president Neil Portnow, who last year tried to deflect criticism of the lack of female winners by saying women needed to “step up” in order to be considered.

He appeared on stage at this year’s ceremony to apologise, saying: “This past year I’ve been reminded that if coming face to a face with an issue opens your eyes wide enough it makes you more committed to bring change.”

Speaking backstage, Dua said: “Being in the new artist category and having so many female artists nominated is a big change and it’s a change we want to see for many years to come, it’s a big difference from previous years, it only felt right because there were so many artists on there that I love and admire.”

This year’s ceremony certainly appeared to be at pains to make amends, with lifetime achievement prizes for Dolly Parton and Diana Ross, and scores of female performers throughout the night.

Brooklyn rapper Cardi B became the first solo female to win best rap album, for her debut Invasion of Privacy.

Accompanied on stage by her husband Offset, Cardi thanked her daughter Kulture Kiari for giving her the impetus to finish the record on time.

“When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete,” she said. “So I was like, ‘I have to get this album done so we can shoot these videos while I was not showing.’”

Speaking in her dressing room backstage Cardi said she shared her award with late rapper Mac Miller, whose family were in attendance at the awards.

Lady Gaga won three prizes, including best pop performance for Joanne and best pop duet for Shallow, from the Oscar-nominated film A Star Is Born.

Holding back tears, the star thanked Bradley Cooper, her co-star and director, who missed the Grammys to attend The Baftas in London.

She also used her speech to highlight the film’s mental health message, telling the audience: “If you see someone that’s hurting, don’t look away.”

Elsewhere, Ariana Grande, who pulled out of a planned performance after a dispute with organisers, received best pop album for Sweetener – her first ever Grammy Award.

“This is wild and beautiful,” she tweeted. “Thank you so much.”

But while the Grammys has made strides with female artists, it still needs to repair its image amongst the hip-hop community.

This year, major stars including Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino declined invitations to perform, amidst concerns their music is being relegated to the rap categories (no hip-hop record has won album of the year since Outkast’s Speakerboxxx / The Love Below in 2004).

The absence of Childish Gambino – aka actor Donald Glover – was particularly notable on Sunday. The star won four awards, including record of the year and video of the year, for This Is America, his scathing critique of US socio-politics.

At one point in the proceedings, host Alicia Keys had to awkwardly fill time when no-one came forward to accept the song of the year award on his behalf.

    Obama surprise

Pop star Camila Cabello opened the ceremony with a colourful – and expensive – staging of her smash hit Havana, set in a replica of her grandmother’s childhood home in Cuba.

The sizzling performance also included fellow Latin performers Ricky Martin and J Balvin, as well as a full Cuban salsa band, setting the tone for a night that was full of elaborate sets and pyrotechnics.

However, some of the most powerful performances were the most simple – including Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes’ powerhouse performance of In My Blood, album of the year nominee Brandi Carlile and a rousing tribute to Aretha Franklin by Audra Day, Fantasia and Yolanda Adams.

Former first lady Michelle Obama also made a surprise appearance, giving a speech about the unifying power of music alongside Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Alicia Keys.

“Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys,” she said. “It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in.”

Diana Ross also spoke of the power of music as she performed her own tribute (possibly the most perfect diva moment in a career full of them), just weeks before turning 75.

“When I was a little girl, I thought the joy of singing made me happy, it made my parents happy and it led to this day and it brings me joy,” Ross said.

Parton’s tribute was more inclusive, with fans and friends Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Little Big Town, Miley Cyrus and Maren Morris joining the star on stage for a joyful medley of her biggest hits.

“I’m just internally freaking out,” said Morris before the show. “I met her and I was just trying not to quote Steel Magnolias at her.”

Dozens of awards were handed out before the televised ceremony kicked off, with The Greatest Showman winning best soundtrack; and British singer Ella Mai scooping best R&B song for the slinky summer hit Boo’d Up.

“I’m legit trying to take it all in,” said the singer, who was nominated for song of the year. “I’ve dreamt of this moment ever since I was a little girl.”

    Is Quincy immortal?

At the age of 85, country star Willie Nelson won best traditional pop vocal album for My Way.

Fellow octogenarian Quincy Jones was honoured in the best music film category, for the Netflix film Quincy.

The award was accepted by his daughter, actress Rashida Jones, who said: “When he first saw the film he said, ‘I wish I could live forever – and I think he could be the first person to do that. I hope you do, dad.”

Neither Quincy nor Willie is close to being the oldest-ever Grammy winner, though. That accolade is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won best traditional blues album in 2011, when he was 97.

  • Hypertension, leading cause of death in Eastern Region – Dr Kwame Anim-Boamah

Hypertension emerged top of the 10 causes of death at the Eastern Regional Hospital in 2018, according to statistics provided by the facility.

Out of the 943 deaths recorded at the hospital last year, hypertension accounted for 210, as against 139 in 2017.

Deaths due to HIV and AIDS and retroviral infections were 207, making it the second cause of loss of lives, while cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) accounted for the demise of 107 people.

Read: Obesity increased by 40% among women from 2003 to 2014 Study

Eighty-one others died from birth asphyxia; 77 from chronic liver cirrhosis; 69 from septicaemia/sepsis and 61 from pneumonia.

The rest were kidney diseases, 44 deaths; diabetes mellitus, 43, and prematurity of babies, 37.

In a media interaction to highlight some of the successes and challenges encountered at the facility in Koforidua last Friday, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Kwame Anim-Boamah, said the facility also recorded 36 maternal deaths in 2018, compared to 39 in 2017.

Read: BCI organizes free screening for staff and inmates of Kumasi Children’s Home

“Out of the 36 maternal deaths, 31, representing 86.1 per cent, were cases referred from other health facilities in the region, with two expectant mothers brought in already dead,” he added.

    Admission cases

Touching on the leading causes of admission to the hospital in 2018, Dr Anim-Boamah mentioned malaria, which accounted for 1, 521 cases; anaemia,1,422; sepsis/septicaemia, 1,145; hypertension 1,131; pneumonia 960; jaundice 703 and 640 urinary tract infections (UTIs).

The others, he said, were 628 gastroenteritis cases; 623 hernia and 445 cases of prematurity.

    Advice

Dr Anim-Boamah advised Ghanaians, including hypertensive patients, to have regular check ups and also adhere strictly to their medications, since the disease was a silent killer.

He also asked some male patients who had the perception that regular intake of their medications could reduce their libido to disabuse their minds of that.

“If you do not take your medication, you may die from hypertension, even though you may think you are enjoying sex now.

“If you have hypertension, it is not a disease that just goes away by taking any medication within one week. It stays with you for a long period of time and so it is important for you to regularly take your medicine,” the director emphasised.

Dr Anim-Boamah said efforts were being made by the management and staff of the hospital to improve on healthcare services in the region.

“We will continue to strive for excellence and quality, in keeping with our motto, and continue to make our patients our focus,” he said.

    Initiatives

Dr Anim-Boamah further indicated that although the hospital was yet to receive its National Health Insurance claims for the past eight months, it had been able to use its internally generated funds to successfully expand the male medical ward.

It had also reduced congestion at the adult Outpatients Department (OPD) and the Casualty Ward, he said.

  • Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo named Woman Entreprenuer of the Year

Invest in Africa has named Mrs. Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo, Founder and Executive Director of Georgette Barnes Limited, as the Woman Entreprenuer of the Year at its SME Excellence Awards.

The awards ceremony held late last month recognized the role played by Mrs. Sakyi-Addo in establishing an astute owned Mine Support Service business, which provides key exploration and drilling supplies to mining clients in West Africa and represents six (6) internationally known sector brands.

The Executive Director of Georgette Barnes Limited described the recognition as an “exciting experience.”

Read: Emulate Ocloo’s can-do spirit Nkrumah to entrepreneurs

“We have been working since 2009 and we are a bit secluded from mainstream general business, and so I was also very surprised that our business was chosen being a female owned business working in the male mining dominated sector,” she said.

A citation in honour of Mrs. Sakyi-Addo said she has been able to rise from the position of Administrative Assistant to various director-level positions in her illustrious career before establishing her own firm.

While she remains grateful to Invest in Africa for the Award, she opined that this award would not necessary give her company any special boost regarding its clients.

“What matters is that you deliver what you are supposed to deliver in the manner it was approved to deliver. Having said that, it is a great for building our corporate brand and also a validation of what our clients have always believed and seen in a company as small as ours,” she stated.

On her advice to young people seeking a career in the extractives sector, she argued that there are a lot of opportunities for young people in the sector and they need to explore the subject area and disciplines that would give them the competitive advantage to work in the sector.

“Along the mining value chain, we have all the regular jobs that are available in general industry and then we have specialised roles as well. I would encourage them to explore all these opportunities.

A lot of the large scale mines are looking for top notch requisite skills and talent and I believe Ghana has them but young people have to be prepared to learn, acquire skills, be prepared to be inconvenienced, be patient and grow over time,” she added.

  • Automated tax collection processes imminent – GRA

Plans are far advanced to enable the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) begin utilizing fully automated systems to improve the efficiency of domestic revenue mobilization collection.

The measures include an electronic filing and payment system, introduction of Fiscal Electronic Devices (FEDs) and a software revenue collection application. These measures are all expected to begin this year.

Read: Ghana Revenue Authority gets 10,000 NABCO personnel for tax collection

The move has become necessary as the Authority seeks to remove all bottlenecks associated with tax collection processes and takes advantage of technology to enable taxpayers file their tax returns and make payments without having to go through the arduous manual process.

Business automation process systems will streamline and bring transparency in the operations as the GRA seeks to meet its set target of over Gh¢44 billion for 2019 fiscal year.

Read: GRA resorts to prosecution as Tax Amnesty slows revenue

When fully introduced, prospective taxpayers would have the convenience and comfort of filing their tax returns and actually making payments using the electronic filing and payment systems from their homes and offices instead of having to go physically to the various domestic tax offices in the country where at times people have to queue for quite long before accessing services.

According to the Authority, the modalities of the automation process will commence from the Large Taxpayers Office (LTO) who will have their returns filed electronically and payment done in similar fashion before moving on to the Medium Taxpayers Office (MTO).

The Authority has also served notice to the public that the FEDs will be made available to all potentially VAT registered persons in the country to be used for the supply of goods and services.

Read: GPHA cannot be blamed for revenue shortfall – Director-General

The devices will issue fiscal receipt invoices after every business transaction. Immediately invoices are issued, it will notify the GRA server of all transactions.

What this means is that even before the taxpayer goes to make a declaration of the transaction, the Authority would already have fore knowledge of how much sales and transactions have transpired within stipulated periods of time.

It is expected that the introduction of the FEDs will eventually maximize revenue mobilization as their use will enable the Authority to track and validate all sales transactions. A Legislative Instrument is expected to be enacted to also enable other persons and enterprises who do not charge VAT to use the devices as well.

Parliament in May 2018 enacted into law the Fiscal Electronic Device Act, (Act 966) to promote non-cash sales transactions as well as provide for mandatory use of the device by specified categories of taxpayers at every point of sale on the premises of the taxable persons.

To enhance voluntary tax payment and reduce the cost of mobilizing funds, the GRA will soon start to develop a mobile app for taxpayers to file their tax returns and make payment through their mobile money accounts. This follows an urgent directive by the Vice President, Mahamadu Bawumia last year.

  • Levante demand $16m for Emmanuel Boateng from Chinese side

Spanish side Levante have asked Chinese top-flight club Dalian Yifang to pay $16m as the transfer fee for Ghana international winger Emmanuel Boateng, Ghanasoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

Boateng is on the verge of sealing move to Chinese side Dalian Yifang as exclusively revealed by Ghanasoccernet.com on Sunday.

The La Liga side started negotiations for the player to leave on Sunday by mentioning $16m as the transfer fee for the player to move to the Asian club, agents close to the deal revealed to Ghanasoccernet.com on Sunday.

But the Chinese are holding out as they want to pay $12.5m as the transfer fee for the player but negotiations will continue until a deal is reached.

The 22-year-old is expected to leave the Spanish city by Monday morning to seal the deal with the Chinese Super League side.

The deal will massively improve the earning of the Ghana international winger as the salary will be eight times more than what he currently earns at Levante.

Boateng has had limited playing opportunities in the ranks of Granotas this terms and will try his luck in the Asian country while massively improving his bank balance.

With the transfer window in China closing on February 28, the Ghana international is well within time to seal the deal.

The man, who shot international prominence by destroying Barcelona last season with a hat-trick that broke the unbeaten record of the Catalan giants, the midfielder has drawn admiration from several clubs in Spain and abroad.

This season however, Boateng is not counting for much for coach Paco López which has prompted the Ghanaian’s decision to seek for playing time elsewhere.

With the Ghanaian not having playing time and the African Cup of Nations looming in Egypt in June, Boateng is making the decision to attract the attention of Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah.

  • Kintampo Waterfalls now enhanced and safe Afeku

The Tourism Minister Catherine Afeku has told Parliament that the Kintampo Waterfall has now been secured and enhanced to avert any future disasters.

She said her ministry had undertaken various works to renovate the site and make it more exciting and appealing to tourists.

Twenty students died, and 21 others sustained varying degrees of injury when a tree, broke off, at the top of the waterfall and fell on the students who were then, swimming beneath the waterfall.

The March 2017 disaster prompted a parliamentary investigation which revealed that a lack of early warning mechanisms and an emergency response team was among the challenges that accounted for the high casualties recorded.

The waterfall was temporarily closed down while renovation and other developments were undertaken at the site to make it better upon its reopening.

Months later in November 2017, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia reopened the refurbished site with a charge to authorities to exhibit good maintenance and accountability culture, as a way of demonstrating appreciation to God for the gift of the waterfalls.

The Parliamentary Committee on Trade and Industry and Tourism after a presentation of its own report on the incident recommended amongst other things an immediate afforestation exercise be carried out to improve the diversity of the flora at the waterfall.

Catherine Afeku after the presentation of the report assured the House that the site was safe and urged MPs to endeavour to patronize the site.

“We have a mesh wall to avoid encroachers, we have a security fence and gate. Trained tour guards paid by Ghana Tourism Authority. We have instituted a first aid building right at the foot of the falls and also renovated a weak staircase that was constructed in the 1970s.

“As of last week, we have added a canopy walk to enhance the attractions of Kintampo. There are now more activities with areas such as camping sites. Trees have also been planted. What is important is that, Kintampo Waterfalls is safe and it is back and we entreat all members to patronize our tourist sites,” she said.

  • Aguero nets hat-trick as Man City humiliate Chelsea 6-0

Sergio Aguero was Manchester City’s hat-trick hero again as they returned to the top of the Premier League in scintillating style by outclassing Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool’s win against Bournemouth meant Pep Guardiola’s side needed victory to return to the summit, albeit having played one game more.

Read: Liverpool back on top after comfortable win over Bournemouth

And their job was done after a sensational opening burst brought four goals in the first 25 minutes as Chelsea were left bedraggled, humiliated and on the receiving end of their worst defeat since they lost 7-0 at Nottingham Forest in April 1991.

The rout started after four minutes when Chelsea were caught napping by Kevin De Bruyne’s quick free-kick which left Raheem Sterling to fire in at the far post before Aguero, who had already missed an open goal, curled a magnificent right-foot finish past the stretching Kepa Arrizabalaga from 25 yards.

Chelsea’s embarrassment was symbolised by Ross Barkley’s inexplicable header straight to the feet of Aguero to poach his second and Ilkay Gundogan capped that early blitz with a low drive.

Aguero completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after 56 minutes following Cesar Azpilicueta’s foul on Sterling, his 15th treble for City and a record-equalling 11th in the Premier League, an honour he shares with Alan Shearer. It was also his second in successive home games after his hat-trick in the 3-1 win against Arsenal.

Sterling then piled on the agony for Chelsea with the sixth, turned in from six yards after David Silva’s threaded pass released Oleksandr Zinchenko down the left.

  • Liverpool back on top after comfortable win over Bournemouth

Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League with a composed display at Anfield that sent Bournemouth to an eighth successive away defeat.

Three days after Manchester City moved top on goal difference, Jurgen Klopp’s side responded to talk of the pressure of a title race showing in their performances in emphatic style.

After a fairly cagey opening which saw Ryan Fraser test Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Sadio Mane settled any nerves by powerfully heading home James Milner’s cross.

Moments after the break, Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino combined stylishly to present Mohamed Salah with a simple finish from 10 yards, his 20th goal in all competitions this season.

Klopp’s side never looked in danger of losing their lead and moved on to 65 points, a tally which would have been enough for at least a nine-point lead in the title race in any of the last five seasons after 26 games.

  • Haile Selassie; Rastafarian ‘god’ to get African Union statue

A statue of Ethiopia’s last emperor is to be unveiled outside the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The likeness of Haile Selassie is being given pride of place outside the $200m (£154m) building in recognition for his role in establishing its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

But that might not be the first thing that springs to mind on hearing the name Haile Selassie. The name is perhaps more easily connected with Jamaican singer Bob Marley and Rastafarians.

So who exactly is Haile Selassie, and how did he come to be worshipped as a god by people living thousands of miles away?

First things first: why is he getting a statue?

Haile Selassie was more than 30 years into his reign when he helped establish the OAU. Its first meeting, in May 1963, was held in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia – which has never been colonised although it was subjected to a five-year military occupation by Mussolini’s Italy – had served as a symbol of African independence throughout the colonial period.

Now other countries were finally gaining independence, and this was a chance to bring nations together to fight against colonisation and white minority rule while also co-ordinating efforts to raise living standards and defend their sovereignty.

“May this convention of union last 1,000 years,” Selassie, who spent a year preparing the city for the meeting, told the gathered delegates.

As it happened, the OAU ceased to exist in its original form in 2002, replaced by the African Union (AU).

But his role in establishing the union has not been forgotten, and the statue is a way for the AU to recognise Selassie’s contribution.

So, how exactly did he come to be seen as a god?

It all comes down to his coronation in 1930, and a “prophecy” made by a Jamaican black rights campaigner, Marcus Garvey, a decade earlier.

Garvey had told his followers in 1920 they should “look to Africa, when a black king shall be crowned, for the day of deliverance is at hand”.

Rastafarian Reggae fans take parts in the Bob Marley "One Love" Festival and Rasta Fair to commemorate and celebrate the life of Bob Marley at the North Beach Amphitheatre in Durban, South Africa on February 3, 2019

Rastafarians believe Haile Selassie was the messiah

So, when a black man called Ras Tafari was crowned in Ethiopia, many saw that as a sign the prophecy had come true.

In East Africa, Ras Tafari (“chief” Tafari) became Haile Selassie (“power of the trinity”). Almost 8,000 miles away in the West Indies, Haile Selassie became God (or Jah) incarnate – the redeeming messiah – and Ethiopia, the promised land.

In short, the Rastafari movement was born.

Did Selassie believe it himself? Well, he certainly didn’t try to dispel the belief when he visited Jamaica in 1966. The emperor was greeted by thousands, desperate to get a glimpse of their god. Among the devotees was the wife of a young Reggae musician, Bob Marley, who was away in the US.

Rita Marley would later describe how she saw nail marks on Selassie’s palm as he waved at her. It was a moment of religious awakening, and when her husband returned, they embraced the belief.

Three years earlier, Rastafarians had begun to move to Ethiopia and a piece of land Selassie had put aside for black people from the West in 1948. After the visit, the numbers grew larger. Today, the community numbers about 300 people.

But followers were presented with a conundrum after Selassie died in 1975, a year after he was deposed in a Marxist revolution. After all, gods cannot die.

This was resolved after it was argued Selassie’s body was just his earthly body.

Also, it should be noted, Garvey was never a believer. In fact, he was a critic of Selassie.

Read: Two Kenyan Airways planes collide at Nairobi airport

    What was he really like?

Opinion is still split over whether Selassie was good for Ethiopia or not.

A Human Rights Watch report accuses him of acting with “official indifference” to famines in various regions of the country and attempting to conceal the famine of 1972-72, in which an estimated 200,000 people died.

He is also known to have violently cracked down on people who opposed him during his reign.

The Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie (C) and Ghana"s founder and first President Kwame Nkrumah (L) during the formation of the Organization of African Unity in Addis Ababa. Ghana

Selassi’s statue joins that of Ghana’s President Kwame Nkrumah, another AU founder

Marcus Garvey was unimpressed after he fled Ethiopia in 1936 following the invasion of Benito Mussolini’s troops a year earlier, describing Selassie as a “coward” and calling him out for “the terrors of slavery”. The practice was not outlawed in Ethiopia until 1942.

Academic Dr Yohannes Woldemariam has gone as far as to argue that Selassie should be remembered as a dictator. Indeed, he created a constitution which placed all the power in his hands and those of his descendents.

But his supporters argue he was a great leader and moderniser, who was one of the first African leaders to become a figure on the global stage.

His appeal to the League of Nations after his country was invaded is still remembered today – not least because it forms the basis of Bob Marley’s 1976 song, War.

What’s more, he was not made emperor through a chance of birth. Although born into a noble family in 1892, he was only named leader after impressing Menelik III with his intelligence.

And – as the AU’s statue to him reminds people – he was a great advocate for pan-African cooperation, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to have an effect on millions of people across the continent today.

  • Kanye West sued by the parents of 4-year-old

Kanye West’s lawyers may have to skip this weekend’s Grammy pre-parties and head to the office instead.

Just days after it was revealed a former pal and associate stole ‘Ye’s identity to bilk Philipp Plein out of nearly $1 million, the adoptive parents of a little girl the rapper sampled on his 2016 release, “Life of Pablo” are coming after him — and his wallet.

TMZ reports Andrew and Shirley Green have filed suit over Kanye’s use of their daughter’s 4-year-old, pulpit-ready preaching voice at the beginning of “Ultralight Beam.”

The sample came from a social media video that went viral at the beginning of 2016 and features Natalie Green serving up a prayer with the refrain, “we don’t want no devils in this house.”

Natalie’s parents, who adopted her in 2012, claim Kanye got permission from her biological mother, Alice Johnson, rather than from them. They say Alice had no legal right to grant such permission. They also maintain they never got a “written license of payment for the use of Natalie’s voice.” according to TMZ.

They’re reportedly demanding a cut of the profits from sales and royalties for the song, plus damages.

As of Saturday, Feb. 9, ‘Ye’s team had not responded to requests from multiple outlets for comment.

Meanwhile, Philipp Plain and presumably Kanye’s reps were busy mitigating the messy situation that ensued after Plein sent out invitations to his upcoming New York Fashion Week event that promised a performance by Kanye. In fact, Kanye had never agreed to perform and the advance Plein thought he sent to the rapper had actually gone to the account of a fraudster.

The sample isn’t the first controversy to surface around “Life of Pablo,” either; the same album features the now infamous Taylor Swift dis on the track, “Famous.”

  • Im still with Alabi, ignore Goosie rumors Namoale

Former Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon Nii-Amasah Namoale has dismissed reports that he has switched camps in the upcoming presidential primaries of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He says claims that he has now moved from the camp of Professor Joshua Alabi to the Goosie Tano are untrue and mischievous.

In a statement, the former lawmaker said: “I write to dispel an erroneous and diabolic impression, created and widely as well as wildly being circulated on social media that seeks to create the impression that I have switched camp from Team Alabi to rally around the bid of Mr. Goosie Tanor for the flagbearership race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“My checks indicate that the platform that generated this diabolic move is owned by Mr. Tanor. I am personally shocked at this move and would classify as dishonest, the machinations by Mr. Goosie Tanor to use me as an endorsement in a campaign that appears to lack the momentum it requires.

“I must put on record that the picture in circulation which had me speaking in front of Mr. Tanor, was taken at his meeting with the La Dadekotopon Constituency, a constituency I am a key stakeholder of, and had represented as its Member of Parliament on three consecutive occasions,”.

He further explained: “My appearance on the platform is to show comradeship and solidarity to his campaign, and I never would have expected that Mr. Goosie Tanor would act in this desperate manner in need of my endorsement.

“I wish to reiterate the point that I am fully in support of Professor Alabi and his vision for the great NDC. I have no regret nor any reason to switch camp from Team Alabi to support Mr. Tanor.

“I ask all supporters of Professor Alabi to disregard the dishonest impression being created by Mr. Goosie and stay focus for the victory we much anticipate on the 23rd of February”.

  • Brexit: May to make plea to MPs for time to change deal

Prime Minister Theresa May will ask MPs to give her more time to secure changes to the controversial part of her Brexit deal – the Northern Irish backstop.

Mrs May is due to report back to MPs this week, after trying to persuade the EU to make last-minute changes.

According to the BBC’s Iain Watson, the PM will promise Parliament another vote on other Brexit options if a deal is still not ready by the end of February.

Labour wants to hold Mrs May to her word and make sure the vote is held.

The shadow Brexit secretary, Sir Keir Starmer, has said Labour has drafted an amendment which, if passed this week, would guarantee a vote by the end of the month.

Read: Special place in hell for Brexiteers without a plan – Donald Tusk

He accused the prime minister of “running down the clock” so that Parliament will only have a choice between her Brexit deal, and a no-deal exit.

There are fewer than 50 days until Brexit. The law is already in place which means the UK will leave the EU on 29 March 2019.

Mrs May’s Brexit deal – which she spent months negotiating and had agreed with the EU – covers the terms of the UK’s divorce and the framework of future relations.

But it was rejected by the UK Parliament and if it is not approved by Brexit day on 29 March, the default position would be a no-deal Brexit.

Last month, Parliament voted in favour of an amendment that supported most of the PM’s deal but called for backstop – which is a last-resort option to prevent a hard border in Ireland – to be replaced with “alternative arrangements”. The prime minister is now in talks with Brussels to seek these changes to the backstop.

But if no changes are agreed by Wednesday, which is likely, Mrs May will address MPs and say more time is needed. She will then table a “neutral motion” for debate.

On Thursday, MPs will debate the motion – and potentially any amendments, such as Labour’s – in a series of parliamentary votes.

According to the BBC’s political correspondent Iain Watson, some ministers have considered resigning so they could support backbench proposals to force Mrs May to delay Brexit.

However Downing Street’s message to them is not to do anything hasty, he said. To reassure them, Downing Street is promising that if there is still no deal by 27 February, MPs will have another opportunity to table amendments setting out alternative options.

These options could include extending article 50 to allow more time to reach an agreement with Brussels.

A number of government ministers will also be meeting their counterparts across the continent this week, in order to underline Mrs May’s determination to achieve a deal.

‘Pretending to make progress’ Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer has told the Sunday Times that Labour plans to force another vote on her deal anyway.

He accused the prime minister of “pretending to make progress” over issues such as the Irish border.

He said that Mrs May intends to return to Parliament after the 21-22 March European summit – with just one week before Brexit – and offer MPs a choice between her deal and a no-deal Brexit.

“We can’t allow that to happen. There needs to be a day when Parliament says ‘that’s it, enough is enough’,” Sir Keir said.

Sir Keir called the prime minister’s approach “reckless” and “blinkered”, blaming “tunnel vision” for the defeat of her Brexit deal by a record 230 votes in January.

Labour intends to put forward an amendment that will require the prime minister to hold a new vote on her deal by 26 February.

He said: “We have got to put a hard stop into this running down the clock. And that’s what we want to do this week.”

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Tony Blair – who wanted the UK to stay in the EU – has told Sky News that a no-deal exit could be “devastating” for Northern Ireland’s peace process.

He told the Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme that it would lead to a “very hard border” on the island of Ireland and is contrary to the Good Friday Agreement, the peace deal he helped negotiate which brought an end to The Troubles.

Critics of the backstop in Mrs May’s current deal say they could tie the UK to EU rules indefinitely or mean Northern Ireland ends up under a different system to the rest of the UK.

But the Irish government and the EU have repeatedly rejected calls for changes.

  • Thomas Partey red-carded as Real win Madrid derby

Ghana star Thomas Partey was sent off as Real Madrid beat Atletico 3-1 in the Madrid derby to overtake their city rivals into second place.

Gareth Bale scored his 100th Real Madrid goal in the game as Real revived their chances of winning the La Liga title.

Casemiro put Real ahead with a volley but Antoine Griezmann equalised after scoring a one-on-one.

Sergio Ramos restored the visitors’ lead with a penalty and Bale converted from Luka Modric’s pass to ensure the win.

Read: Thomas Partey named in La Liga Team of the month for January

Atletico ended with 10 men after Thomas Partey was shown a second yellow.

    Real revival continues

In-form Real Madrid have now won six of their past seven games, having drawn 1-1 with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Wednesday and this deserved derby win moves them to within five points of La Liga leaders Barca.

Santiago Solari’s side opened the scoring when Casemiro was left unmarked and he sent an acrobatic volley flying past Jan Oblak as Atletico failed to clear a corner.

Atletico levelled as Griezmann chased onto an Angel Correa through-ball to slot under Thibaut Courtois, who had toy rats thrown at him by Atletico fans. The Belgian spent three seasons on loan at Atleti from Chelsea earlier in his career.

But Ramos scored his eighth penalty of the season to restore Real’s lead after Vinicius Jr had been fouled by Jose Maria Gimenez. Four of his previous seven had been ‘Panenkas’ – chipped down the middle – but this time he drove the ball into the bottom left-corner.

Vinicius was replaced by Bale in the second half and the Welshman smashed a low shot beyond Oblak for his landmark Real goal in his 217th game.

Atletico fail to turn up in poor performance

Atletico were lacklustre as they conceded two goals in the first half of a home game for the first time since moving to the Wanda Metropolitano in 2017 – and the fastest in La Liga at the venue.

Griezmann’s goal, their one good moment of the game, came after a long video assistant referee delay, but he had timed his run perfectly.

Atleti had thought they had levelled for a second time when Alvaro Morata, facing his former club, chipped Courtois brilliantly from outside the box – but the VAR team correctly ruled he was offside. Atletico had been unbeaten in 19 games before his loan arrival from Chelsea, but have lost both matches with him in the team.

A red card seemed inevitable for Diego Simeone’s side, who had six players booked and it eventually came when Partey fouled Toni Kroos for his second booking.

  • Shaanxi mining pit collapse: Perpetrators must be severely punished Talensi Chiefs

The Talensi Traditional Council has called for severe punishment for persons found responsible for the recent mine accident at Gbani in Talensi in the Upper East Region.

The Council in a statement copied to citinewsroom.com expressed regret about the accident that resulted in the death of some 16 people and left about 15 others injured.

The Talensi Traditional Council said it sympathizes with the families of the deceased persons and regrets the development.

Read: An MoU to govern the impact of Golden Star Wassa Mines on Mining

It also urged the government agencies looking into the matter to do so thoroughly and “deal with the perpetrators firmly without fear or favour.”

The mine accident occurred in January 2019 when a tunnel with dozens of miners in it belonging to a small-scale concessionaire, Kwesi Appiah, also known as Kwesi Bantama caved in as a result of a blast from Shaanxi Mining company.

The incident led to a government order for Shaanxi Mining Company to suspect its operation with some miners arrested by the police to assist in investigations.

There has since been accusations and counter-accusations between some townsfolk, the mining company and Kwesi Appiah over who is responsible for the accident.

But according to the Talensi Traditional Council, the peace and harmony in the area must not be destroyed over the incident.

Read: An MoU to govern the impact of Golden Star Wassa Mines on Mining

The chiefs said it had taken note of “misguided” comments by some persons who are accusing the Traditional Council of being culpable in the accident and is advising that “such persons should cease forthwith and the politely cautioned not to go beyond their bounds.”

“The Council gathers information about an intended demonstration by some so called concerned citizens. Whereas we do not stand in the way of any such demonstrations, we caution that any such demonstration should not be violent or go against any taboos of the traditional area or likely to incite the public so as to promote violence.”

The Council further pledged its support for the committee of enquiry set up by the government to investigate the matter, urging it to speed up its work and also ensure that the report is made available to all concerned parties.

  • CAF president Ahmad allegedly involved in shady deals

Caf President Ahmad is facing a threat to his reign after being accused of violating the statutes of African football’s ruling body.

Executive Committee (ExCo) member Musa Bility called for an urgent ExCo meeting on Friday.

He wants Ahmad’s decisions to redistribute the 2021, 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and sign a commercial deal without ExCo approval to be assessed.

“It is my fervent hope that you will (agree) to investigate these matters of gross statutory and financial procedural violations by the President for appropriate actions,” said Bility.

Read: SAFA President Jordaan says SA can never say no to CAF despite 2019 AFCON snub

“I defer to you to take the appropriate actions to save the increasing decline of our statutory governance system by exerting your authorities given you by the Caf Statutes,” the Liberian wrote in a letter to his fellow ExCo members on 8 February.

Caf’s statutes rule that only eight of the ExCo’s 23 members need to be present for such a meeting to go ahead.

Should the ExCo find Ahmad guilty of breaching Caf statutes, which state that moving any Nations Cup requires the approval of the ExCo, the former Madagascar FA president could be suspended from his role and, ultimately, expelled.

The BBC has contacted Caf for comment from Ahmad but has yet to hear back.

Bility maintains that the Malagasy violated Caf statutes when choosing to reassign hosting rights for three Nations Cups without ExCo approval.

Shortly after Cameroon was stripped of hosting the 2019 edition in November because of slow preparations, Ahmad offered the same country the chance to stage the 2021 finals – which Ivory Coast had been set to stage.

The Caf president revealed the offer on 3 December, prompting Ivory Coast to launch a legal challenge with the Court of Arbitration for Sport just days later before Caf itself issued a statement to say that no decision had been made with regard to changing the 2021 hosts.

“We confirm no decision was taken by the executive committee,” the African body stated on 17 December.

Cameroon eventually accepted to host the 2021 finals, with Ivory Coast then agreeing to stage the 2023 edition (instead of 2021) and Guinea also choosing to stage two years later (2025 instead of 2021.

Yet Ahmad’s ability to re-order the competitions has not impressed Bility, who has also taken issue with the recently-announced partnership deal between Caf and betting company 1XBET.

Read: U-20 AFCON: Ghana suffers 2-0 defeat to Senegal

“Again, contrary to Caf Statutes, the signing of such a major sponsorship deal with a huge financial and regulatory implication without the approval of the Caf Executive Committee is a serious violation,” Bility wrote.

Last week, the former Liberian FA president resigned from two positions with Caf as he launched an initial attack on Ahmad’s leadership.

Ironically, the Liberian played a key role in Ahmad’s election in 2017, when the Malagasy dethroned long-standing Caf president Issa Hayatou.

However, as Bility’s recent statements have made clear, there are clear divisions among those leading the African game.

Caf’s first vice-president Amaju Pinnick acknowledged the differences earlier this month.

“When you start at an organisation which has been in the hands of someone for 29 years, you are definitely going to see things like this. Change is very difficult,” Pinnick told BBC Sport.

“We are doing everything to reduce those cracks. We’re doing everything.”

Ahmad’s term of office is set to expire in 2021.

  • Ayawaso violence: IGP must resign over unanswered questions Ras Mubarak

The Member of Parliament, MP, for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak is asking the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu to step down over the violence that marred the by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency last week.

He said the IGP must resign honourably because he has been unable to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the disturbances at the by-election.

Read: U.S visa sanction: Ghana must retaliate Ras Mubarak

According to the MP, the most appropriate thing the IGP is supposed to do is to resign since he has been unable to bring to book all the unidentified men who were using the police vehicles and weapons during the by-election.

“Speaking of the Ghana Police Service, I think the IGP would do the honourable thing and tender his resignation because his continuous stay as IGP has become very untenable, especially in the light of conflicting reports between the police and National Security,” he said.
Speaking on the Eyewitness New on Friday, Ras Mubarak said the position the minority is taking on the commission of enquiry probing the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, is in the interest of Ghanaians.

Read: I will ‘kill’ you if you dare me – Ras Mubarak to NPP ‘thugs’

It has not been an easy few months for the Inspector General of Police, David Asante Apeatu as the country has been beset by a plethora of violent incidents that have citizens worried about their general security.

The current state of distrust and worry was heightened recently by the incident at La Bawaleshie on the day of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election where clashes between the security team and some NDC supporters led to the shooting of one person who is currently on admission at the 37 military hospital and injuries to several others.

The initial response from the Ghana Police Service over the activities of several hooded and heavily armed individuals, purportedly deployed from the offices of the national security to wreak chaos during the election was denial.

Subsequent events supported by video footage from the scene, however, indicates that denial is not enough and the police command, headed by the IGP have questions to answer.

Government subsequently set up a commission of enquiry chaired by former Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Emile Short to probe the violence.

The commission has just a month to finish the investigations and present its report.

  • Duration of University education to be reduced to three years NAPO

The Minister for Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh has hinted that the government will soon engage universities for the possible reduction in the time spent on pursuing an undergraduate degree program.

He said the government is looking at reducing the duration from the current four years to three years.

According to him, in most countries all over the world, it takes three years to complete an undergraduate degree program.

“Everywhere in the world, undergrad is three years not four years, why should we spend four years doing undergrad? We will sit down with the university lecturers and start challenging them because Ghana is not an island,” the minister said.

Speaking at the 2019 Danquah Institute Leadership lecture under the theme: “World Class Education and Imperative for the Next Generation of Leaders,” Matthew Opoku Prempeh said he gathered that the University of Ghana originally ran three-year-long degree programs with the first year dedicated to general studies whose exams are non-scoring while the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology also take three years.

“Because we have learnt [from] our history, they took two years in doing a degree in the University of Ghana. KNUST took three years because in the University of Ghana, they had a first university exam that was non-scoring and still came out with PhDs,” the minister explained.

Currently, all public universities and most private universities run a 4-year first-degree system for most programs, a development some say is not in conformity with global standards.

Matthew Opoku Prempeh said the government is currently working to review the existing curricula for the various levels of education in the country to ensure that graduates can compete favourably in the 21st-century world of work.

He said government is committed at enhancing technical and vocational education as it has outlined in its campaign manifesto.

  • The Ultimate Postpartum Guide: What happens after you give birth

Nearly 90 percent of women will have a child. Yet for an event so common-and dramatically life-altering-its striking how rarely we discuss what happens to us. Forget diapers and pacifiers. We want to talk about how motherhood transforms our minds, our bodies, and our health. (And why talking about it just might save our lives.) Welcome to the WH unfiltered reality guide.

    Motherhood is magical

Really, thats the only word that can describe the act of creating, delivering, and raising a child. But theres another sleight of hand at play, one thats rarely discussed: the mysterious power to make the woman who endured nine months of pregnancy, hours of labor, and birthing a baby the size of a small pumpkin (according to the fetus-size-as-produce chart) feel virtually invisible after birth.

Dont get us wrong-few things in life are sweeter and more rewarding than a babys gummy smile. But while newborns are doted upon, moms are often relegated to the background, with limited help or resources as they navigate one of the most profound physical and psychological shifts a woman can experience. Indeed, nearly three-quarters of mothers say society doesnt understand or support them, according to a recent survey.

One reason: Theres a myth that motherhood comes naturally and that were completely fulfilled just by taking care of our babies, says Elizabeth Fitelson, MD, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. So why would we need help or-gasp!-make ourselves a priority?

Let’s bust that misconception wide open. Yes, motherhood can be joyous. But it can also be full of angst, sadness, and confusion. Most often, its a shifting maelstrom of all those emotions and more. And, oh yeah, physical and mental changes that last a lifetime-not just the six weeks after delivery (the clinical definition of the postpartum period).

We say: Eff the unrealistic expectations that women should heal from giving birth, master breastfeeding, and return to work in less time than it takes to train for a half-marathon! We need a postpartum revolution-to say the unsayable and acknowledge the hard truths about modern-day motherhood. Celebs like Chrissy Teigen, Cardi B, and Serena Williams are already leading the charge by publicly sharing their postpartum struggles. Netflixs raw sitcom The Letdown vividly busts new-mom stereotypes. And women are using hashtags like #TakeBackPostpartum and #MotherhoodUnfiltered to inspire and encourage others with stories of the less-than-picture-perfect side of momming.

It takes a village to raise a child. But moms are equally in need of a community of support. Enter ours. Its about to get very real.

Why didn’t anyone tell us about this?

You knew delivering a human was going to be tough, but guess what: That was just the beginning. Some crazy sh*t happens to your body after delivery. Fortunately, weve got the remedies for your postpartum parts.

Your ass, not your vagina, will hurt the most. Between stretching, pushing, and tearing (most women do), your perineum-i.e., the vagto-anus zone-may feel battered and bruised. Nab a few padsicles (maxipad icepacks) from the hospital.

You might get rrhoids. Another pain in the butt? The stress of carrying, then pushing out, a baby can cause veins in or around the anus to pop out, throb, and itch. Soak in a sitz bath or send your S.O. to the store for an OTC cream. (Its the least he can do.)

You’ll have the period to end all periods. Lochia-gory postpartum blood-can flow for up to six weeks. Disposable mesh panties are unsexy but comfy and can hold the ginormous pads (tampons can irritate healing tissue) youll need.

You’ll have contractions. This is a good thing! Its your uterus shrinking back to its normal size. Nursing moms: Expect them when your baby feeds; a chemical released during breastfeeding triggers the contractions. Get help in the form of a heating pad.

You’ll be scared to poop. Narcotic pain meds can stop you up, as can the sheer fear of having a BM when everything down there hurts like, well, a mother. We promise, it wont be that bad, but lots of water and fiber-rich foods will help get things moving.

The gash in your gut is going to hurt. A C-section is major surgery, so expect serious soreness. Take any pain meds your doc prescribes (theyre safe, even if you breastfeed), and hold your hands over the area when you cough or laugh.

    Feeding Frenzy

At first, nursing can-pun intended-suck. But conquer these challenges and you’ll reap health perks for yourself and your baby.

You dont have milk straightaway. Dont panic. For a day or two, your body produces colostrum, a highly concentrated fluid made of antibodies. Be patient-and prepare. When your milk does come in, your girls may go up a few cup sizes until your supply settles.

You feel like a 24/7 milk factory. Because you kinda are. Newborns need to nurse 8 to 10 times in a 24-hour period, for as long as 40 minutes at a time. That adds up to as much as seven hours-almost a full workday. Enlist your partner, friends, and family to take care of diapering, burping, or meal prep. Your nipples hurt as if they have rug burns. Repeatedly putting your nips in a wet mouth can make them dry and cracked, which equals toe-curling pain when baby latches on. Apply a drop of olive oil or an OTC nipple cream after each feeding and call a lactation specialist if pain persists. Your babe might have an easily fixed issue.

You woke up with jugs the size of basketballs. Hallelujah! Baby started sleeping through the night. Too bad no one told your boobs, which prepped milk at the normal feeding times. Pump or hand-express just enough milk so youre comfortable. If you fully deflate the breast, your body will keep making milk at that time.

Your breasts can get backed up. Leftover milk can gum up the ducts that channel milk to the nipple, causing a tender lump, and potentially mastitis, a painful infection. Have baby feed on the side with the blockage while you massage it. Vibration, like from a kids toothbrush, may also help. To prevent future milk jams, dont skip feedings.

    The Politics of Breastfeeding

The debate on breast is best versus formula feeding distracts from the real problem: Doctors heavily promote breastfeeding, but the government doesnt fully support moms efforts. Breastfeeding in public wasnt legal in all 50 states until this year. Inadequate paid leave forces many mothers to return to work before they can establish a milk supply (it can take up to six weeks), and 60 percent of working moms dont have a safe, private place to pump. Is it any wonder two-thirds of moms dont reach their BF goals? Here’s what you can do to take action.

Ask your congressional leaders to back the Supporting Working Moms Act, which would provide workplace protections for pumping and breastfeeding.

Have your colleagues backs (or, er, fronts). To new moms who are breastfeeding, support from female coworkers is even more important than that from their significant others, friends, and relatives. Offer encouragement so she can take pumping breaks.

Petition local public venues (like stadiums and arenas) to install freestanding lactation pods, like those made by Mamava. No woman should have to pump in a port-a-potty.

A Matter of Life or Death

Babies have a flurry of checkups in the days and weeks after leaving the hospital. Though moms are also at risk during this period, most wont see a doctor until their six-week checkup. An estimated 700 women die in the U.S. every year from pregnancy- and childbirth-related causes-thats more than in any other country in the developed world. Another 65,000 nearly die. And women of color are particularly vulnerable, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More devastating, research says that half of these deaths may be preventable. Why: New mothers arent told of the risks and problematic signs, and postpartum nurses dont receive enough education on symptoms that could indicate life-threatening complications, one study found. Whats more, women living in rural maternity care deserts dont have enough access to obstetric services, says a new March of Dimes report.

To address the unacceptably high maternal-mortality rate, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently released guidelines suggesting that a moms first doc visit should come within three weeks of delivery, with follow-ups as needed. When women are seen sooner, doctors are more likely to spot cardiovascular problems, hypertension, and mental health issues that are big factors in these mortality rates, says ob-gyn Tamika Auguste, MD, a coauthor of the ACOG opinion.

If youre expecting, schedule an appointment within a few weeks of your due date. And if worrying symptoms (swelling, headaches, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulties) crop up before this visit, call your doctor, stat.

    Who Am I Now?

The seismic identity shift experienced by freshly minted moms can be disorienting, slightly terrifying, and bittersweet. We sat down to get real about this transition with reproductive psychiatrists Alexandra Sacks, MD, and Catherine Birndorf, MD, authors of the forthcoming What No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions From Pregnancy to Motherhood .

Why do women often feel a loss of identity after having a baby?

Sacks: Its a wild change thats actually analogous to puberty. Just like how a child evolves into a teenager and an adult, theres a period of body morphing and hormone shifts that a woman goes through when she becomes a mother. Plus theres an identity transition: You go from living a life where you are at the center to waking up and realizing you are responsible for, and in love with, a completely dependent human who now runs the show.

What do you wish more women knew about this metamorphosis?

Birndorf: That almost every new mother is ambivalent in some way about becoming a mom.

Sacks: Exactly. Women come to me and say, Today I felt like I wanted my old life back, or, Did I make a mistake having a baby? They are afraid to admit it and think something is wrong with them. Thats why talking about the highs and lows is so important. Knowing youre not alone can be incredibly powerful.

What can women do to find themselves again?

Sacks: Write down everything that was most pleasurable to you before you became a mom-what made you feel balanced and well. Then put the list on your refrigerator so you can check in and see how much of it you have cut out in the craziness of early parenting. Were often too busy in the transition to motherhood to put ourselves first, and this list can be an important reminder.

    The Politics Of Paid Leave

The U.S. is the only developed country in the world without mandated paid family leave, and policies created by individual states cover just 15 percent of workers. As a result, one in four women return to work just two weeks after giving birth. Whats most frustrating: Research shows paid leave policies would benefit everyone. They increase productivity, reduce reliance on government subsidies, and lower infant mortality rates.

Take Action: Urge your elected officials to vote for the FAMILY Act, which would create a national program providing all workers up to 12 weeks of partial income to deal with pregnancy, caregiving, or health issues.

    Trying NOT To Conceive

Post-baby, changes to your repro goals may lead you to rethink your birth control. Let us help you guide your choices, whatever your situation.

Best for Women who are still breastfeeding Progesterone-only contraception such as the mini-Pill, intrauterine devices (IUDs), the shot, or an implant. Combined hormonal methods-those containing estrogen-may hurt moms milk supply. Best for Women who want to get pregnant again soon Condoms, cervical caps, and diaphragms. Theyre commitment-free, so you can toss them whenever youre ready to try again.

Best for Women who are on the fence about having more kids LARCs (long-acting reversible methods), including an IUD, an implant, or a shot. Theyre 99 percent effective, and once theyre in place you dont have to think about birth control again until youre ready to try for another baby.

Best for Women who are over it Vasectomy. And after years (maybe decades) of handling the birth control in your relationships, youve earned a break. It can take three months to be effective, so if you dont want an oops baby, use condoms until you get the green light from the doc.

Im exhausted and hormonal. My giant breastfeeding boobs hurt 24/7. I pee a little every time I do a jumping jack.

    Beyond the Blues

As many as 15 percent of new moms develop a post-partum mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD)-yet only half of sufferers are identified. The key to getting help: spotting the red flags that signal the shift from normal woes to a serious problem.

B onding Difficulties Baby Blues: Your connection is a slow build, not love at first sight. PMAD: Youre indifferent to or ambivalent about your child, or you actively dislike them. Mood Swings Baby Blues: You ugly-cry one moment and belly-laugh the next. PMAD: You have severe emotional shifts that last longer than three weeks.

Anxiety Baby Blues: You feel unsettled and on edge. PMAD: Obsessive fears make it hard to function. E.g., You stay up all night to compulsively check on the baby.

Scary Thoughts Baby Blues: You worry about accidents (like dropping the baby). PMAD: You persistently think about harming your child, even if you never would act on it.

    For the Long Haul

Six months after giving birth, writer Sara Gaynes Levy is still navigating fitness as a new mom.

At my postpartum checkup, I asked my OB if there was anything I needed to be careful about as I got back into working out. Her vague response: Dont do anything that doesnt feel comfortable.

Um, what? My entire life is uncomfortable! Im exhausted and hormonal. My giant breastfeeding boobs hurt 24/7. I pee a little every time I do a jumping jack. (People: A warning would have been nice!) And Im still recovering from the last year of my life: the first-trimester nausea that left me so weak I could barely stand up to take a shower; the third-trimester belly that let me drop down only an inch during modified pushups; the baby that compressed my lungs for a quarter of a year.

Theres a mental shift too. Ive spent years trying to get comfortable with discomfort. Running long distances, holding deep yoga poses, lifting heavy weights-none of that necessarily feels good in the moment, but Im stronger for it. In fact, thats always been the point of exercise for me: It helps me feel powerful, awake, on top of my game. But now that my body is in something of a state of disrepair, Im no longer always able to tell when discomfort is building it up or breaking it down.

It only gets more confusing when I have to choose between taking care of my body by sleeping and taking care of my body by exercising. I want to be the best version of myself for my daughter, but I dont always know which one to pick. Its a new kind of challenge, one without a clear finish line.

Most days I choose the physical discomfort (although, I promise, if I have a day where I feel like its punishing me, I back down) because I want my daughter to see that every drop of sweat on my face is proof of a victory. I want her to share in that strength and see exercise as something to be proud of. Im pushing through the aches-for both of us.

    Lets Talk About Sex

And how almost a quarter of women still find it painful a full 18 months after childbirth. Overcome these issues and the only thing standing between you and a stellar romp will be the kid who wakes up just as you get your groove on.

Scars: If you tore or had an episiotomy, still-healing tissue can be sore. Add bedroom activities that dont involve penetration. C-section incision still itchy and sensitive? Avoid positions that put weight on your stomach.

Leaks: Chemicals released during sex can trigger letdown, even if youve stopped breastfeeding. Meaning: Your boobs may spray. And with your weakened pelvic floor, pee might also trickle out. Keep a towel (and a sense of humor) close by.

Hormones: Still breastfeeding? Low estrogen levels can make the vagina less elastic and cause it to dry out. Plus, nursing curbs testosterone (the mone that amps up desire). Lean on lube and longer foreplay.

Libido: Dissatisfaction with your body and sheer exhaustion can make you feel meh about getting down. Spend time with your guy without sex being the sole goal. Tell him: Netflix, sans chill.

    The Politics of Childcare

Talk about sticker shock: The average cost of childcare in the U.S. is $8,700 a year. That price tag, combined with a lack of family-friendly work policies (e.g., flex time), drive many women out of their jobs, which can create financial hardship. Having a baby is one of the leading causes of poverty, says Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, cofounder and CEO of MomsRising.com and author of Keep Marching: How Every Woman Can Take Action and Make Change in Our World.

Take Action: Urge your elected officials to vote for the Child Care for Working Families Act, which would limit childcare costs to 7 percent of low- and middle-class parents income. If youre in need of financial help, contact advocacy group Childcare Aware (childcareaware.org). It can connect you with assistance resources in your state.

    Rethinking Mom Brain

Forgetting appointments or even (occasionally) your own name-the mental struggle is legit. As in scientifically proven: Brain scans show moms have less gray matter. But that could be a good thing. It may be our brains version of nesting-a streamlining and restructuring that helps us adapt to the extra skills and attention needed to nurture another human being, says Kelly Lambert, PhD, a professor of behavioral neuroscience at the University of Richmond. In which case: Embrace these new superpowers.

Mad Multitasking Skills: Moms have increased activity in their prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain associated with decision-making. That quick thinking comes in handy when juggling the demands of motherhood.

Enhanced Empathy: Youll feel for your kids, even during the most epic tantrum, because the part of your brain linked with understanding others emotions grows.

A Shield Against Stress: Maternal brain changes may make you less likely to lose your sh*t in tense situations, preliminary research suggests. Call on this prowess when your preschooler flips out over the seam in her socks.

A Razor-Sharp Memory: Changes to the hippocampus may boost your powers of recall. The catch: It pertains only to info about your kids. Youll remember exactly where your toddler left his monster truck, but you still might scramble for a coworkers name. Womp.

  • Ayawaso violence: IGP must resign over unanswered questions Ras Mubarak

The Member of Parliament, MP, for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak is asking the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu to step down over the violence the marred the by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency last week.

He said the IGP must resign honourably because he has been unable to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the disturbances at the by-election.

Read: IGP asked to resign or get fired

According to MP, the most appropriate thing the IGP is supposed to do is to resign since he has been unable to bring to book all the unidentified men who were using the police vehicles and weapons during the by-election.

“Speaking of the Ghana Police Service, I think the IGP would do the honourable thing and tender his resignation because his continuous stay as IGP has become very untenable, especially in the light of conflicting report between the police and National Security,” he said.

Speaking on the Eyewitness New on Friday, Ras Mubarak said the position the minority is taking on the formation of the commission of enquiry to probe the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, is in the interest of Ghanaians.

Read: GP reshuffles 122 police officers

  • GHC54m judgment debt hits Ghana Railway

Ghana Railway Company Limited is on the verge of losing some of its properties in Sekondi in the Western Region after a High Court hit it with a GHC54 million judgement debt.

Ghana Railway Company Limited in 2006 laid off about 674 workers without recourse to due process.

The workers who were not pleased with the layoff filed a suit against Ghana Railway Company Limited in September 2010 after all alternative dispute resolution strategies had been exhausted.

Ghana Railway Company subsequently failed to settle these workers even after both the High and Appeal Courts ruled the case in favour of the aggrieved workers against the government which has accrued into a Judgment debt of GHC 54million.

The Sekondi High Court presided over by her Ladyship Sophia AB Akuffo, on Friday ruled that some properties of the Ghana Railway Company Limited be auctioned to make up for the GHC54 million judgement debt.

The order prohibits Ghana Railway Company Limited from alienating the property by sale, gift, or in any other way. The general public is hereby prohibited from receiving the said property as gift, by purchase or otherwise.

  • Minority wants National Security, Interior Ministers hauled before Parliament

Some Minority Members of Parliament are calling on the leadership of the House to summon the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah and Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery before the House to brief them on the level of security in the country.

The Member of Parliament for Adaklu constituency, Governs Kwame Agbodza, while making a contribution on the Floor of Parliament on Friday, said it is important for the two ministers to among other things formally brief the House on the violence that marred the by-election held in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

“I want the business committee to consider scheduling the Minister responsible for National Security, and Interior to brief Parliament on all allegations of brutalities that took place at Ayawaso Wuogon,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak also backed the call.

The Majority Chief Whip and MP for Sunyani East, Kwesi Ameyaw Cheremeh, in a response to the call indicated that the House will consider the submission by the Minority.

The Minority believes that the sector Ministers owed the House some explanation as to why some armed masked men unleashed mayhem on civilians during the by-election.

The identities of the masked men and whose instructions they were working under was not known until the Minister of State in Charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong disclosed in a Citi News interview that they were security personnel sanctioned by the state.

Before then, the police hierarchy had denied knowledge of the security force.

The masked and armed men were captured on video physically assaulting the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George during a heated altercation.

There were also reports of sporadic gunshots by the men at the La Bawaleshie Presby school polling station.

    Committee set to probe violence

Meanwhile, the government has inaugurated a commission of inquiry to look into the matter.

The commission is being chaired by Justice Emile Short. Other members are Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Patrick K. Acheampong.

It also has former Dean of the Faculty of Law of GIMPA and private legal practitioner, Mr. Ernest Kofi Abotsi as its Secretary.

  • The presidency is not for people who want to correct their mistakes – Sly Mensah jabs Mahama

An aspiring presidential candidate hopeful, Sylvester Mensah says the presidency is not an avenue or a place where you go to make mistakes and return to ask for another chance to make amends.

He told host of Frontline Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, we cannot allow people to use the presidency as an avenue for try and error hence the need for delegates to vote massively for him to win the presidential election for the party in 2020.

Although he did not refer to anyone, his jabs appeared to be directed at former President John Dramani Mahama who is asking delegates to vote for him to come and amend his mistakes.

But Mr Mensah says the presidency cannot be used for such activities.

    Read: Akpaloo ‘bashes’ Mahama

The former National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) boss said, “the presidency is not a place where you go and make mistakes, come back and ask to be given another chance to amend your mistakes. I think that, you must be ready and prepared to get to the seat of the presidency, and when you are there, there should be minimum errors but if you go there and commit errors and just come back to the public and say that, I made mistakes, I am now coming back to correct my wrongs, it simply means you were not prepared then and even now you are not prepared.”

Delegates he noted have bought into his message and was optimistic of victory come February 23, 2019 when delegates go the polls to elect a presidential candidate.

He is also preaching for unity in order to help them win the polls massively.

Read: Cool chop for Mahama? I laugh enter my bedroom Joshua Alabi

Ghanaians he noted are extremely disappointed and encountering insecurity under the incompetent NPP administration led by President Akufo-Addo.

Meanwhile, he has described the number 4 ballot he picked as a miracle and prophetic.

He is looking forward to be the fourth president to have emerged from the NDC after former president Rawlings, the late John Evans Attack Mills and former President John Dramani Mahama.

  • Our demands to make Gambaga capital of NER unchanged – Youth to Government, Nayiri

The youth of Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipal in the Northern Region have reechoed their demands for the area to be made the capital of the newly created North East Region.

According to the group in a latest statement copied to MyNewsGh.com, claims they never petitioned for the area to be made the capital are untrue insisting that series of demonstrations as well as press conferences extensively covered points to this fact.

They insist that some individuals within the area are bent on usurping on the rights of majority of residents of the area and therefore wants the Minister of Regional Reorganization and Development, Hon. Daniel Kweku Botwe to ensure that the rightful place is made the capital

Nayiri Naa Bohigu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga , they pleaded must as a matter of urgency call to order those individuals within his kingdom who have set out to create chaos and to mar the beauty of his rule.

Read: New regional capitals to be named on February 12

“Their actions are a threat to his rule and the peace of the entire north east region”, they warned.

Gambaga for several decades, they argued has been regarded as the administrative capital of the East Mamprusi Municipality and Gambaga equally respect Nalerigu as the traditional capital of Mamprugu.

“This mutual role of the two towns should be maintained for the good of the entire North East Region. The ministry for regional reorganization should not leave the issue of siting the capital of the North East Region to only the chiefs as it is increasingly becoming clear that there is some compromise being made of the chiefs in the case of the North East Region”, it stated.

Read: Government consulting over selection of capitals for new regions – Dan Botwe

Continuing their request, the group stated “The ministry should stick to its earlier idea of consulting technocrats to aid in a proper siting of the capital. It is our hope that such technocrats will meticulously and patiently sift through all matters without succumbing to the whims and caprices of interested parties within the North East Region. In the face of political history, centrality, available existing infrastructure and administrative resources, security and defence and land and other natural resources to kick start as capital of the NER, Gambaga is unmatched and indeed stands very tall. Finally, we call on His Excellence Nana Addo who is a man who stands for truth and justice and a lawyer who respects the tenets of democracy to ensure that people with parochial interest do not tarnish his reputation through this issue of siting the capital of the North East Region. It is our hope and expectation that all relevant stakeholders will be consulted and all reasonable factors will be considered in siting the capital of the NER. This will ensure that the new region will bring the needed development to the area in an atmosphere of peace”
