  • Saudi Arabia ‘curtailed’ Jamal Khashoggi murder probe – UN expert

Saudi Arabia “seriously curtailed and undermined” Turkey’s ability to investigate the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a UN expert has said.

A preliminary report says it was 13 days before Turkey was allowed into the consulate where the journalist was killed.

Khashoggi was last seen alive entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

The 59-year-old was a prominent critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

US officials have reportedly said such an operation would have needed the prince’s approval.

But Saudi officials insist he was murdered by a “rogue” team of Saudi agents not acting on Prince Mohammed’s orders.

Read: Emiliano Sala: Body identified as Cardiff City footballer

The country has put 11 people on trial for the murder and is seeking the death penalty for five of them.

Saudi Arabia has refused to extradite its citizens to Turkey after the country issued arrest warrants for several Saudi officials.
    What does the report say?

UN Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard, who is leading an international human rights inquiry into the murder, visited Turkey between 28 January and 3 February.

The preliminary report on the inquiry says Khashoggi “was the victim of a brutal and premeditated killing, planned and perpetrated by officials of the State of Saudi Arabia”.

Turkey’s ability to investigate this murder though was “seriously curtailed and undermined by Saudi Arabia’s unwillingness, for some 13 days, to allow Turkish investigators access to the crime scenes.”

While the murder took place on 2 October, authorities only got access to the consulate on 15 October, and not to the residence there until 17 October – which in particular affected the forensic investigation, she wrote.

Ms Callamard also attacked Saudi Arabia’s trial of 11 suspects in the case, saying it raises “major concerns” about transparency and fairness.

“I have requested an official country visit to Saudi Arabia so that the authorities there can directly provide me with relevant evidence,” she wrote.

The fact Khashoggi’s body still has not been found is causing “even greater suffering” to his loved ones, the report adds.

The final report will be presented to the UN human rights council in June.

What’s the latest in the Khashoggi case?

Saudi Deputy Public Prosecutor Shalaan bin Rajih Shalaan said investigators had concluded an intelligence officer ordered Khashoggi’s murder, applying a lethal injection inside the consulate.

Read: UN team probing Jamal Khashoggi killing arrives in Turkey

The officer had been tasked with persuading the dissident journalist to return to the Gulf kingdom, he added.

Khashoggi’s body was dismembered inside the building and the body parts were then handed over to a local “collaborator” outside the grounds, according to Mr Shalaan.

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Saudi finance minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan told delegates the country was “absolutely sad about what happened to Jamal Khashoggi”.

Turkey meanwhile has identified 15 men it believes to be Saudi agents arriving at and departing from Istanbul’s international airport around the time of the killing.

It is unknown if any are now on trial in Riyadh.

The US has imposed sanctions on 17 Saudi officials, including Saud al-Qahtani, a former adviser to the crown prince who it alleged was “part of the planning and execution of the operation” that led to Khashoggi’s murder.

It is unclear if any of the 17 are on trial.

  • Venezuela crisis: Aid lorries stuck in Colombia border city

The first lorries with US humanitarian aid for Venezuela have arrived in the Colombian border city of Cúcuta.

The vehicles are currently parked near the Tienditas bridge, which remains blocked by Venezuelan troops.

President Nicolás Maduro, who has the support of the army, has rejected letting it into the country.

Opposition leader Juan Guaidó, who has declared himself interim president, has warned many Venezuelans are in danger of dying without international aid.

Mr Guaidó is head of Venezuela’s National Assembly and says the constitution allows him to assume power temporarily when the president is deemed illegitimate.

Read: Venezuela blocks border bridge where aid is set to arrive

He has secured the backing of over 40 countries, including the US and most Latin American and European nations. Mr Maduro still has the support of China and Russia.

    In other developments:

    * The US announced new sanctions on members of the Maduro administration, saying visas for members of the government-controlled Constituent Assembly would be revoked

    * European and Latin American members of the so-called International Contact Group said it was crucial to restore full democracy in Venezuela, saying they would push for new elections as soon as possible

What’s the latest on the US humanitarian aid?

On Thursday, several lorries with food and medicine arrived at a collection centre in Cúcuta.

The vehicles were escorted by Colombian police motorcycles.

It was not immediately clear how the humanitarian aid would be delivered across the border.

The Venezuelan military had earlier placed cargo containers and a tanker lorry across the Tienditas bridge, which connects Cúcuta and the city of Ureña in Venezuela.

Mr Maduro has refused foreign aid supplies, saying they would open the way for US military intervention to oust him.

He said that “no-one will enter, not one invading soldier”.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is demanding that Venezuela re-open the bridge, saying “the Maduro regime must let the aid reach the starving people”.

A number of Venezuelan leaders have also appealed to the military to allow the aid lorries to cross into the country.

How could the aid scheme work?

Mr Guaidó does not control any territory in Venezuela so, instead, he is planning to set up collection centres in neighbouring countries to which Venezuelans have fled.

He said he wanted to set up an international coalition to gather aid at three points, and press Venezuela’s army to let it into the country.

In a tweet last Sunday, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said plans were being advanced.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said in an interview the use of military force remained “an option”.

Read: Gucci withdraws jumper after ‘blackface’ backlash

In his Tuesday State of the Union speech, he reiterated his support for Mr Guaidó, saying: “We stand with the Venezuelan people in their noble quest for freedom.”

What’s the background to the crisis?

Venezuela has suffered economic turmoil for years, with hyperinflation and shortages of essentials such as food and medicine. Millions have fled.

In January, Mr Maduro was sworn in for a second term following disputed elections which many opposition leaders did not contest because they were in jail or boycotting them.

Mr Guaidó, who is head of Venezuela’s National Assembly, declared himself president on 23 January.

He says the constitution allows him to assume power temporarily when the president is deemed illegitimate. On Saturday he said protests would continue until his supporters had achieved “freedom”.

  • Emiliano Sala: Body identified as Cardiff City footballer

The body recovered from the wreckage of a crashed plane is that of Cardiff City player Emiliano Sala, Dorset Police have said.

Sala, 28, was travelling to Cardiff in a plane piloted by David Ibbotson, which went missing over the English Channel on 21 January.

The Argentine’s body was recovered late on Wednesday after the wreckage was found on Sunday morning.

Dorset Police confirmed the identification on Thursday night.

In a statement, the force said: “The body brought to Portland Port today, Thursday 7 February 2019, has been formally identified by HM Coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala.

“The families of Mr Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.”

The body was spotted in the wreckage of the plane on Monday and the authorities were able to recover it two days later, despite “challenging conditions”.

The Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) said the operation had been carried out “as dignified a way as possible” and the men’s families were kept updated throughout.

The Geo Ocean III, which was involved in finding the wreckage, took the body back to the nearest port of Portland in Dorset, where the body was formally identified.

The Piper Malibu N264DB was en route from France to Cardiff, after the Argentine striker made a quick trip back to his former club Nantes two days after his £15m transfer to Cardiff was announced.

Cardiff City, issued a statement shortly after identification was confirmed, saying: “We offer our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family of Emiliano. He and David will forever remain in our thoughts.”

Some of the club’s players reacted via Twitter. Full back Joe Bennett wrote “RIP Emiliano”, while centre-half Sol Bamba posted a black-and-white image of the team-mate he never got to play alongside.

Stars from the wider footballing world also paid tribute.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger wrote: “Heartbreaking to hear the news about Emiliano Sala. Rest in peace! Thoughts go out to the family and friends of Emiliano and the pilot.”

Read: Emiliano Sala plane wreckage found in Channel

And Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil tweeted: “No words to describe how sad this is. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and also to the family of the pilot.”

Mr Ibbotson, 59, from Crowle, North Lincolnshire, was at the controls when the flight lost contact with air traffic controllers on 21 January.

He is yet to be found.

An official search was called off on 24 January after Guernsey’s harbour master said the chances of survival were “extremely remote”.

But an online appeal started by Sala’s agent raised £324,000 (371,000 euros) for a private search led by marine scientist and oceanographer David Mearns.

Working jointly with the AAIB, his ship and the Geo Ocean III, began combing a four square mile area of the English Channel, 24 nautical miles north of Guernsey, to make best use of the available sensors.

Mr Mearns said the plane was identified by sonar, 67m (220ft) below the surface, before a submersible with cameras was sent underwater to confirm this.

Following the confirmation, he also tweeted his tribute.

“I was glad to provide some small comfort to Romina, Mercedes and the whole Sala family during the past two weeks but my heart goes out to the family and friends of David Ibbotson whose loss is the same,” Mr Mearns said.

  • Ayawaso violence: Commission of Inquiry set up to whitewash government Otokunor

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Peter Boamah Otokunor has said the opposition party is not going to take any verdict from the commission inquiry set up by the government to investigate the disturbances that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election last week.

To him, the commission is only a cover up to absorb government from blame.

“We have also taken notice of the wishy-washy cover-up commission that was set up by the vice president yesterday [Wednesday], if you look at the members of the commission nobody would tell you this group of people are just going to sit there and do cover up for the president,” he said in an interview on Eyewitness News on Thursday.

Stalwarts of the NDC joined hundreds of Ghanaian on Thursday to demonstrate against the level of security in the country especially with the by-election violence.

According to Otokunor, the purpose of the demonstration was demand clear answers from the government about the violence at Ayawaso West Wuogon.

He said the party is giving the president up to one week to come up with a better explanation and answers to what happened at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia had made similar pronouncements where he said the Commission of Inquiry is only a ploy to protect perpetrators of the violence.

According to him, the whole idea of the Commission is flawed at birth because the president did not follow the right procedure in setting up such commissions.

“I am surprised and even confused because there is a procedure for the setting up of a Commission of Inquiry, which procedure has not been followed at all. This Commission of Inquiry has been flawed at birth, so I want to believe it is a smokescreen move which the president is using to protect its own appointees,” he told Umaru Sanda on Eyewitness News on Wednesday.

The Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced that government had set up a Commission of Inquiry to probe circumstances that led to the violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

The Commission was set up with the consent of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who is out of the country.

  • Princess Ubolratana: Thai royal to stand as PM candidate

The sister of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has joined the race to be the country’s next prime minister.

Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, 67, will stand for a party allied to divisive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, according to registration papers.

The unprecedented move breaks with the tradition of the Thai royal family publicly staying out of politics.

Read: Thailand says Australia to blame for arrest of refugee Bahraini footballer

Thailand’s election is scheduled to take place on 24 March.

The election is being closely watched as the first chance for Thailand to return to democracy after five years under military rule.

    Who is Princess Ubolratana Mahidol?

Born in 1951, Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi is the oldest child of Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

After marrying an American in 1972, she gave up her royal title and moved to the US. After her divorce she returned to Thailand and once again started participating in royal life.

The princess engages actively in social media and has also starred in several Thai movies.

She had three children, one of whom died in the 2004 tsunami while the other two still live in the US.

The princess has registered for the Thai Raksa Chart party, which is loyal to the controversial Shinawatra family that has dominated Thai politics for years.

Who else is running in the election?

The country’s current prime minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, also announced on Friday that he would be running for prime minister in the current election.

The army chief, who seized power in a military coup in 2014, will be running as a candidate for the pro-military Palang Pracharat party.

But the royal family is revered in Thailand and there are questions around whether any other candidate would want to challenge a member of the royal family.

What does this mean for Thai politics?

The March vote will be the first since Mr Prayuth took power in 2014, overthrowing the democratic government and ousting ex-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the younger sister of Thaksin Shinawatra.

Both Mr Shinawatra and his sister currently live in self-imposed exile but still remain a powerful force in Thai politics, with many in the country remaining loyal to them.

The election is viewed as a battle between Mr Thaksin’s allies and the military, but the princess’ decision to run is likely to strike at the heart of the military’s strategy to remain a force in politics, according to the BBC’s Bangkok correspondent Jonathan Head.

The Kwesé TV presenter in a tweet has registered her concern of how female wards are brought up in an African home saying, they are normally thought to marry rich men.

She stressed that African mothers usually put pressure on their daughters to get married to richmen instead of goodness or love and barely instill independence in daughters making them rely on men financially each day.

She has therefore admonished African mothers to teach their daughters to be indepent.

    She writes:

“At a young age, most African daughters are taught to marry a rich man. Mothers usually putting pressure on the marriage of richness, not goodness or love. Barely instilled independence in daughters, everyday depend on a man for financial means. Teach your daughters independency.”

Born Andrea Owusu, Efia Odo is a Ghanaian budding actress and TV presenter who hails from Juaben in the Ashanti Region.

Efia hit the limelight about a year ago when she started posting sexy photos of herself on Instagram.

  • Anthony Joshua close to deal for ‘iconic’ New York fight – Promoter

Anthony Joshua will get the chance to create an “iconic moment” in New York as a deal to fight Jarrell Miller draws closer, says promoter Eddie Hearn.

The unified world champion was due to fight at Wembley on 13 April but the date will almost certainly be scrapped.

Instead, Hearn says facing New Yorker Miller at Madison Square Garden on 1 or 8 June is “likely”.

Read: Anthony Joshua to face Alexander Povetkin in September

“I really believe it will be a major moment for Joshua’s career,” Hearn told BBC Sport.

“Legacy is about creating iconic moments and Joshua in New York is an iconic moment.

“He is going to go there and completely turn the US boxing scene on its head as they are going to see a real star.”

Taking an unforeseen opportunity Any bout at Madison Square Garden will see Joshua follow in the footsteps of fellow heavyweights Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis in headlining at the prestigious arena.

Hearn says he is in “deep negotiations” with Miller but admitted the bout was “not the intention” several months ago. Some fans have already criticised the move.

December’s draw between WBC champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury is set to lead to a rematch, consequently tying up two opponents who would have inevitably created a buzz among fans of the sport had they agreed to face Joshua at Wembley on 13 April.

Hearn concedes Fury and Wilder likely have bigger profiles in the US market after their Los Angeles contest but said he is “excited” about the opportunity which has now “presented itself”.

“Right now we have got our heads around this happening,” Hearn told BBC Radio 5 live.

“For many years people have said AJ needed to fight in the US.

“He definitely needs to build his profile in the US but knowing how he looks, behaves and fights he will be a superstar in America.

“We are not done with a deal yet but there is a strong chance.”

Local media said rescue efforts were being hampered by dangerously high levels of toxic gas.

He said that engineers would join the rescue efforts by rigging up lighting in the mine shafts.

  • Emiliano Sala search team recover body from plane wreckage

A body has been recovered from the wreckage of the plane which crashed with Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said specialist contractors joined the operation in “challenging conditions”.

It was carried out in “as dignified a way as possible” and the men’s families were kept updated throughout, it said.

The wreckage of the plane, which vanished two weeks ago over the English Channel, had been found off Guernsey.

The Piper Malibu N264DB was en route from France to Cardiff, after the 28-year-old Argentine striker made a quick trip back to his former club Nantes two days after his £15m transfer to Cardiff was announced.

Mr Ibbotson, 59, from Crowle, North Lincolnshire, was at the controls when the flight lost contact with air traffic controllers on 21 January.

The body that was recovered from the wreckage was being taken to the Isle of Portland to be passed to the Dorset coroner. No details have been released concerning its identification.

An official search was called off on 24 January after Guernsey’s harbour master said the chances of survival were “extremely remote”.

However, the wreckage was located thanks to a privately-funded operation led by marine scientist and oceanographer David Mearns.

He called in the AAIB after using sonar and a submersible device fitted with cameras to confirm it was the plane.

Speaking to Argentine broadcaster Cronica TV on Monday after the wreckage was discovered, Sala’s father Horacio said: “I cannot believe it. This is a dream. A bad dream. I am desperate.”

The AAIB used a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to aid the search, and was able to recover the single body previously seen in the wreckage.

It said efforts to recover the crashed plane as a whole proved unsuccessful, before being abandoned due to poor weather.

“The weather forecast is poor for the foreseeable future and so the difficult decision was taken to bring the overall operation to a close,” it said in a statement,

However, the AAIB said video footage captured by the ROV would provide “valuable evidence” for its safety investigation.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Sala’s former club, French Ligue 1 side Nantes, has demanded Cardiff City pay his £15m transfer fee.

Sala, 28, was Cardiff’s record signing but never played for the club.

The fee was due to be paid over three years but Cardiff have withheld the first scheduled payment until they are satisfied with the documentation.

  • Gucci withdraws jumper after ‘blackface’ backlash

Luxury fashion brand Gucci has withdrawn a woollen jumper from sale after the item was criticised for “resembling blackface.”

The black “balaclava jumper” covered the lower half of the face and featured a red cut-out around the mouth.

The item prompted a backlash on social media by users who claimed the design was offensive.

In a statement, Gucci apologised for any offence caused and said it would be removed from sale.

The brand said it would turn the incident “into a powerful learning moment for the Gucci team” and was committed to increasing diversity.

Blackface has a history of perpetuating offensive and racist stereotypes of African Americans dating back more than 200 years in the United States.

On social media, many criticised the design for invoking such stereotypes.

Gucci’s troubles mark the latest in a string of missteps by luxury fashion brands.

Last month, Prada withdrew items over concerns it had depicted blackface imagery. The label pulled products from a line of goods called Pradamalia which appeared to resemble black monkeys with large red lips.

Dolce & Gabbana cancelled its Shanghai fashion show amid accusations of racism.

The brand posted videos of a Chinese model eating Italian foods like pizza and pasta with chopsticks.

Widely seen as offensive, the campaign led to a severe backlash in China with several retailers pulling the brand’s products.

D&G also caused controversy in 2016 when it called an item of footwear in its spring/summer collection a “slave sandal”.

  • Why Ariana Grande won’t be at the Grammys

Ariana Grande has said thank you, next to the Grammy Awards.

A source close to the singer tells CNN that Grande has decided not to perform at Sunday’s event — or attend — after a dispute with the show’s producers.

“The producers were dictating what songs she could sing,” the source said.
CNN has reached out to the Recording Academy for comment.

Grande, whose album “Thank U, Next” drops Friday, is nominated for best pop vocal performance and best pop vocal album.

Grammy producers initially rejected Grande’s choice to perform her new single “7 Rings,” then later agreed on the condition they chose her second song, according to the source.

Grande had been included in promotions for the Grammy Awards on billboards and buses around Los Angeles in recent weeks.

Despite her absence, there will be a slew of artists taking the Grammys stage, including Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Janelle Monáe, Post Malone, Dan + Shay, Kacey Musgraves and Shawn Mendes.

Alicia Keys will host the show which airs February 10 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

  • Grammys find balance between awards and performances

The Grammys return this weekend, facing some of the same challenges as those confronting its movie-industry counterpart, the Oscars, but with at least one significant advantage: the music world’s top prize has already found a balance between handing out awards and delivering entertainment.

Like the Oscars, ratings for last year’s Grammys fell sharply, dropping by roughly 24% in total viewers (to 19.8 million) and in key young-adult demographics that advertisers sell against compared to the previous year.

Also like the Oscars, the presentation will shake up aspects of the broadcast.

Alicia Keys will serve as host, after CBS late-night star James Corden filled that role back-to-back years; and there will be an expanded field of competitors, from five to eight, in the four major categories: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

In one key respect, though, the Grammys have seemingly become the enviable model of a modern awards ceremony, largely because the awards themselves co-exist more organically with entertainment and live performances. Although the Recording Academy presents more than 80 awards each year in a wide variety of categories, the telecast that airs on CBS features only about 10 of those presentations, squarely putting the emphasis on a concert-like atmosphere that highlights unique combinations of talent and tributes.

Other major awards, by contrast, present two dozen or more trophies, as well as honorary awards. With the pressure to keep viewers engaged, that has produced tension about streamlining the process by racing through it or even presenting awards off air during commercial breaks in order to squeeze what is theoretically more engaging content into the presentations.

Unlike other major award events, the Grammys have considerable entertainment value baked into the format, which is significantly different than stars (and in the case of the Oscars, technical talent) parading to the stage giving speeches. The Grammy format has “evolved over the last decade or so, as audience desire has changed and shifted,” said Jack Sussman, CBS’ executive vice president of specials, music and live events.

Sussman acknowledged that the overall surplus of award shows is a likely factor in declining ratings, diluting the experience. But he stressed that a few major awards presented by industry peers — the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys being the others — still possess a level of prestige that sets them apart.

Although the number of on-air awards has declined, the Grammys remain committed to providing a broader celebration of the year in music, as well as tributes that offer performance opportunities. This year, the latter includes segments devoted to Motown’s 60th anniversary (the subject of a stand-alone special that will be taped next week and broadcast in April) and Dolly Parton.

According to Sussman, the balance that must be struck involves highlighting the year’s award-worthy artistry — with Kendrick Lamar and Drake leading the way in terms of total nominations — and still putting on a show that’s mindful of the viewer at home.

“You need to maintain that integrity, and give the audience something that entertains them and keeps them watching,” he said. “And they’re not mutually exclusive.”

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards air Feb. 10 on CBS.

  • Facebook ordered by Germany to gather less data

Germany’s competition authority has told Facebook it can only continue gathering so much data about users from beyond its app and website if it gets individuals’ consent.

The watchdog has carried out a probe into the social network following concerns that members were unaware of the extent of the firm’s activities.

It covered data gathered from third-party sources as well as via Facebook’s other apps, including Instagram.

The US firm has said it will appeal.

Specifically, the FCO has ruled that:

Facebook’s various services can continue to collect data, but they cannot combine it with the user’s main Facebook account unless the member gives their voluntary consent
collecting data from third-party websites and assigning it to a Facebook user’s account is likewise only allowed if that member has given the firm permission
The watchdog added that an “obligatory tick on the box” to agree to all the company’s terms was not a sufficient basis for “such intensive data processing”.

The ruling only applies to the firm’s activities in Germany, but is likely to influence other regulators.

Facebook claims the Federal Cartel Office has overstepped the mark by pursuing a data privacy matter that Facebook says falls under the remit of another regulator.

It has one month to challenge the ruling before it becomes legally effective.

If the order is upheld, the company must develop technical solutions to ensure it complies within four months.

    Data sharing
The FCO’s justification for the case is that it believes Facebook abused its market dominance to gather the data.

“In future, Facebook will no longer be allowed to force its users to agree to the practically unrestricted collection and assigning of non-Facebook data to their Facebook user accounts,” explained Andreas Mundt, the FCO’s president.

“The combination of data sources substantially contributed to the fact that Facebook was able to build a unique database for each individual user and thus to gain market power.”

The ruling could affect the firm’s use of the Like and Share buttons on external sites, which lets Facebook track each visitor’s internet protocol (IP) address, web browser name and version, and other details that can be used to identify them. This is true, even if users never click on the buttons.

Likewise, the Facebook Login, which lets users avoid having to type in a unique username and password for each service, shares similar device-identifying information.

In addition, the company runs a scheme called the Facebook Pixel, which adds code to a third-party site to let its owners track whether ads run on Facebook converted the people who saw them into buyers.

The FCO was also concerned by the fact that Facebook shares some of the data gathered by Instagram, WhatsApp and its other services with its namesake platform.

The firm recently announced plans to go further and integrate the technology behind the chat services of Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Facebook defends such practices on the grounds that:

they help it show more relevant ads to consumers

they help advertisers measure how successful their campaigns are

they make it easier for Facebook to identify fake accounts, combat terrorism and otherwise protect its users

In a blog, it added that the FCO had overlooked steps it had already taken to be compliant with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, which came into force last year.

“The GDPR specifically empowers data protection regulators – not competition authorities – to determine whether companies have lived up to their responsibilities,” it said.

“And data protection regulators certainly have the expertise to make those conclusions.”

“The [FCO] order threatens to undermine this, providing different rights to people based on the size of the companies they do business with.”

The German watchdog is also pursuing a separate probe into Amazon. It is exploring whether the retail giant has acted illegally in its relations with the third-party sellers who use its platform.

  • Special place in hell for Brexiteers without a plan – Donald Tusk

European Council President Donald Tusk has spoken of a “special place in hell” for “those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan of how to carry it out safely”.

He was speaking after talks with Irish leader Leo Varadkar in Brussels.

Brexit-backing MPs reacted with anger to the comments, accusing Mr Tusk of “arrogance”.

Downing Street said it was a question for Mr Tusk “whether he considers the use of that kind of language helpful”.

The prime minister’s official spokesman said: “We had a robust and lively referendum campaign in this country. In what was the largest democratic exercise in our history, people voted to leave the EU.”

He added that everyone should now focus on delivering that.

Mr Tusk’s Twitter account tweeted his comments immediately after he made them in a news conference.

And at the end of their news conference, Mr Varadkar was picked up by the microphones telling Mr Tusk: “They’ll give you terrible trouble in the British press for that.”

Mr Tusk nodded at the comment and both laughed.

Brussels officials were quick to clarify Mr Tusk’s remarks, stressing to BBC correspondent Adam Fleming that the Brexiteers’ special place in hell would be for when they are dead and “not right now”.

Jean-Claude Juncker tried to laugh off the comments at a later press conference with Mr Varadkar, saying the only hell he knew was doing his job as the president of the European Commission.

And Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s chief Brexit negotiator, referencing Mr Tusk’s comments, later tweeted: “Well, I doubt Lucifer would welcome them, as after what they did to Britain, they would even manage to divide hell.”

But leading Brexiteers in the UK took to social media to express their anger at Mr Tusk’s remarks.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who is now an independent MEP, tweeted: “After Brexit we will be free of unelected, arrogant bullies like you and run our own country. Sounds more like heaven to me.”

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom, who also campaigned for Britain’s exit from the EU, said Mr Tusk should apologise for his “disgraceful” and “spiteful” comments.

“I’m sure that when he reflects on it he may well wish he hadn’t done it,” she told BBC Radio 4’s World at One.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis, when asked on ITV Peston’s programme how he felt “when President Tusk practically reserved your place in hell?”, said: “Perhaps he’ll join us there.

“When people throw insults around it says more about them than the people they’re insulting.”

The Democratic Unionist Party’s Brexit spokesman Sammy Wilson said: “This devilish Euro maniac is doing his best to keep the United Kingdom bound by the chains of EU bureaucracy and control.

“It is Tusk and his arrogant EU negotiators who have fanned the flames of fear in an attempt to try and overturn the result of the referendum.”

But Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald backed Mr Tusk, arguing that it was the position of “hardline” Brexit-supporting MPs like Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg that was “intemperate” and “untenable”.

And Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, who supports having another EU referendum, said Mr Tusk was “absolutely right” and it was “painful” for leading figures in the Leave campaign, such as Boris Johnson and David Davis, “to have the truth pointed out to them”.

Theresa May – who supported the UK staying in the EU during the 2016 EU referendum but has always insisted that Brexit must be delivered because that was what people voted for – is due to arrive in Brussels on Thursday to seek legal changes to the withdrawal deal she signed with the EU. She hopes these changes will help her get it through the UK Parliament.

BBC political correspondent Iain Watson said the government was likely to publish a new employment bill before the next vote on Mrs May’s deal, with the aim to maximise support for it from Labour MPs.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has set out five demands for his party to support a Brexit deal – calling for them to be enshrined as objectives in domestic law.

In a letter to the prime minister, he said Labour wanted a UK-wide customs union, close alignment with the single market, “dynamic alignment” on rights and protections, “clear commitments” on participation in EU agencies and funding programmes and “unambiguous agreements” on the detail of future security arrangements.

He said Labour did not believe that “simply seeking modifications” to the backstop was a sufficient response.

Mr Corbyn added that EU leaders had been clear that changes to the political declaration were possible if a request was made by the UK government “and if the current red lines change”.

    Still open to a solution?

By BBC Brussels reporter Adam Fleming

The EU has been absolutely scathing about some of the British political class today.

The dam broke on Donald Tusk’s pent-up feelings about the leaders of the Leave campaign.

The Irish prime minister suggested that MPs either didn’t know what they were doing or were misled when they voted to look for alternatives to the Irish backstop.

But – and it’s a big but – they have all been open to the prime minister coming to Brussels with a solution to break the deadlock.

And while Jean-Claude Juncker ruled out the idea of the UK having the right to pull out of the backstop if it were ever needed, he didn’t say anything about the other idea doing the rounds – a time limit.

Donald Tusk said that the other 27 EU members had decided in December that the withdrawal agreement was “not open for renegotiation” – a message echoed by Mr Juncker.

Mr Tusk also had a message for Remain supporters in the UK, with 50 days to go until Brexit happens, with a deal or without one, saying: “I have always been with you, with all my heart”.

But he added: “The facts are unmistakable. At the moment, the pro-Brexit stance of the UK prime minister, and the Leader of the Opposition, rules out this question.

“Today, there is no political force and no effective leadership for Remain. I say this without satisfaction, but you can’t argue with the facts.”

Mr Tusk said the Irish border issue and the need to preserve the peace process remained the EU’s “top priority”.

He hoped Mrs May would “give us a deliverable guarantee for peace in Northern Ireland and the UK will leave the EU as a trusted friend” that can command a Commons majority.

Mr Varadkar said that while he was “open to further discussions” with the UK government about post-Brexit relations, the legally-binding withdrawal agreement remained “the best deal possible”.

And the backstop was needed “as a legal guarantee to ensure that there is no return to a hard border on the island of Ireland”.

He later said he will meet Theresa May for talks in Dublin on Friday.

Jean-Claude Juncker said alternative arrangements – the form of words backed by MPs in a vote last week – “can never replace the backstop”.

  • Trump sees total rout of Islamic State group as imminent

US President Donald Trump has said territory held by the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq could be “100%” liberated as early as next week.

“It should be announced, probably some time next week, that we will have 100% of the caliphate,” he told a gathering of coalition partners.

However, he also cautioned that he wanted to “wait for the official word”.

US military and intelligence officials say IS could stage a comeback without sustained counter-terrorism pressure.

Read: State of the Union: Trump announces second North Korea summit

Mr Trump shocked coalition allies in December when he declared that the group had been defeated, amid reports he wanted to pull out US soldiers within 30 days.

But he later slowed the withdrawal after several resignations from key defence officials and strong criticism from Republicans and allies abroad.

The global coalition against IS, now numbering nearly 80 nations, was formed in 2014 after the group overran swathes of territory and went on to launch terror attacks outside the region.

How does Trump view the battle against IS now?

“Their land is gone,” he told Wednesday’s conference in Washington. “The Isis [IS] caliphate has been decimated.”

But the group still had “tiny sections that can be so dangerous”, he said, and “foreign fighters must not gain access” to the US.

Read: Trump again weighs national emergency before SOTU speech

He also referred to the IS propaganda machine, which recruited fighters from Europe and other regions.

“For a period of time they used the internet better than we did,” he said. “They used the internet brilliantly but now it’s not so brilliant.”

The US leader thanked coalition partners, saying, “We will be working together for many years to come.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pledged the US would continue to fight IS, despite withdrawing troops from Syria.

He called the troop pullout a “tactical change… not a change in the mission”, and said the world was entering an “era of decentralised jihad”.

    Has IS really been defeated?

It has certainly lost control of most of the territory it overran, including its strongholds of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria.

However, fighting continues in north-eastern Syria, where the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) say they captured dozens of foreign fighters in recent weeks.

On Tuesday the head of the US military’s Central Command, Gen Joseph Votel, told a Senate committee up to 1,500 IS militants remained in a 20 sq mile (52 sq km) pocket on Syria’s border with Iraq.

The group, he said, still had “leaders, fighters, facilitators, resources and the profane ideology that fuels their efforts”.

Meanwhile, a report by a US defence department watchdog cited Central Command as saying that without sustained pressure IS “could likely resurge in Syria within six to 12 months”.

Another challenge is what to do with the hundreds of foreign fighters captured by the SDF, as well as their families.

Governments in their home countries are reluctant to take back radicalised militants who swore allegiance to Islamic State.

How will an IS comeback be stopped?

By Barbara Plett Usher, BBC state department correspondent

President Trump’s comments were more than a month late, as he did not consult his allies about his decision in December to withdraw US troops from Syria. The shock from the surprise announcement has settled, but coalition members want to know how this is going to play out. It’s not clear that the administration has sorted that out.

Both Mr Trump and Mike Pompeo called on other nations to take on more commitments for the continued campaign against the IS group, but said they were still in the fight – America would continue to lead it, Mr Pompeo said.

Mr Trump had previously suggested that some of the troops in Syria could be moved to American bases in neighbouring Iraq, from where they could launch commando operations across the border as necessary.

But there are still no official details about how the US will continue the counter-terrorism pressure Mr Trump’s generals and intelligence officials have said is necessary to stop IS militants from staging a comeback.

  • EOCO has not received any cash or phone from NAM1 Executive Director

The Economic and Organised Crime Office has denied allegations circulating on social media that the Executive Director and staff had received cash amounts and mobile phones from Nana Appiah Mensah (NAM1), the Chief Executive of Menzgold.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Madam Jacqueline Avotri, the Head of Public Affairs, EOCO, for the Executive Director, Mr K.K. Amoah disclosed that, the attention of the Office had been drawn to a video circulating on social media to the effect that, “NAM1 bro mentions names of top officials who took money, phones from Nana Appiah”.

According to the statement, the video is malicious and slanderous with the main aim of destroying the image of the Office and the reputation of the Executive Director.

It stated that the supposed brother (KOD) of Nana Appiah had no basis for his allegations, adding that, “We wish to state clearly that the statement is totally false”.

The statement noted that the Executive Director nor any member of staff of EOCO has in no time received cash of any denomination, mobile phones nor 4×4 Land Cruisers from Nana Appiah.

It said the Office is of the opinion that the freezing of the assets of Menzgold Company Limited and its Associated Companies had incurred the displeasure of some beneficiaries of the assets of the Company, which might have prompted the video in circulation.

“The video and its alleged content will not deter the Office from retrieving and preserving the assets owned by Menzgold and its Associated Companies,” the statement said.

“The Office is further assuring the general public that we have a duty to perform and would continue to secure the asset of Menzgold Company Limited and its associated companies in accordance with our mandate as confirmed by the order of the court,” it added.

The statement, therefore, advised the public to disregard the video in circulation.

  • Brexit: UK will not be ‘trapped’ in backstop, May to tell EU

Theresa May will return to Brussels later to press EU leaders for legally binding changes to the Brexit deal.

The PM will insist the UK will not be “trapped” in the backstop – the plan to avoid the return of Irish border checks should no UK-EU trade deal be in place.

She will say the deal must change if it is to win the support of MPs who urged her to seek “alternative arrangements” when rejecting the deal last month.

However, the EU has repeatedly ruled out changing the withdrawal agreement.

And Mrs May’s visit is being overshadowed by the row over Wednesday’s outburst by Donald Tusk, who declared there was a “special place in hell” for those who campaigned for Brexit without a plan to deliver it.

Read: Brexit: Theresa May ‘determined’ to leave EU in March

MPs who backed Leave in the 2016 referendum reacted with anger to the comments, accusing the European Council president of “arrogance”.

Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has set out five demands for his party to support a Brexit deal – calling for them to be enshrined as objectives in domestic law.

In a letter to the prime minister, he said Labour wants a UK-wide customs union, close alignment with the single market, “dynamic alignment” on rights and protections, “clear commitments” on participation in EU agencies and funding programmes and “unambiguous agreements” on the detail of future security arrangements.

He said Labour did not believe that “simply seeking modifications to the existing backstop terms is a credible or sufficient response” to the scale of defeat suffered by Mrs May on her deal last month.

Mr Corbyn added that EU leaders had been clear that changes to the political declaration were possible if a request was made by the UK government “and if the current red lines change”.

Analysis: What awaits Theresa May in Brussels?

By BBC Europe editor, Katya Adler

There’s pretty much zero expectation that any real progress will be made on Thursday when Theresa May comes back to Brussels looking for changes to the backstop.

Mr Tusk is not alone in Europe in his frustration at leading Brexiteers’ unrealistic promises…

EU leaders are irritated too that – as they see it – the UK voted for Brexit but keeps looking to Brussels to come up with ways to make its exit workable and painless.

But most senior European politicians are keeping those thoughts quiet – in public.

Considering the tortuous political dance Theresa May is trying to pull off in Westminster, they realise outspokenly critical EU opinions may not be helpful if, in the end, they want to get this Brexit deal done with the UK.

Read: Donald Tusk: Special place in hell for Brexiteers without a plan

Where are we in the Brexit process?

The UK is due to leave the EU at 23:00 GMT on Friday 29 March, when the two-year time limit on withdrawal negotiations enforced by the Article 50 process expires.

In January, MPs overwhelmingly rejected the withdrawal deal that the government had negotiated with the EU, backing an amendment for the government to seek “alternative arrangements” to the backstop.

The backstop is an “insurance policy” designed to avoid “under all circumstances” the return of customs checkpoints between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic after Brexit.

Many fear creating physical infrastructure along the border could threaten the peace process.

But the Democratic Unionist Party and Brexiteers believe the proposed temporary single customs arrangement could threaten the integrity of the UK, leaving it bound by EU rules if no trade deal is agreed.

Mrs May is due to meet European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council president Donald Tusk and other senior figures on Thursday.

Downing Street said one of the Mrs May’s key messages will be that the Commons has now made it clear it could support the withdrawal agreement, as long as concerns about the backstop are addressed.

    ‘A trusted friend’

The prime minister will use the meetings to state that Parliament has sent “an unequivocal message that change is required”.

Mrs May is “open to different ways” of achieving her objectives on the backstop, Downing Street said.

She will also stress that Mr Corbyn shares the concerns about the backstop, saying that it is not just an issue for the Conservatives and the government’s DUP allies.

Both sides must “show determination” to get an exit deal “over the line”, Mrs May will say.

Downing Street said the government wanted to bring back a “meaningful vote” on a Brexit deal to the Commons as soon as possible.

On Wednesday, Mr Tusk said the Irish border issue and the need to preserve the peace process remained the EU’s top priority.

He hoped Mrs May would “give us a deliverable guarantee for peace in Northern Ireland and the UK will leave the EU as a trusted friend” that can command a Commons majority.

Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar said that while he was “open to further discussions” with the UK government about post-Brexit relations, the legally-binding withdrawal agreement remained “the best deal possible”.

And the backstop was needed “as a legal guarantee to ensure that there is no return to a hard border on the island of Ireland”.

He is due to meet Mrs May for talks in Dublin on Friday.

  • Ghana Link, UNIPASS dragged to court

The controversy surrounding the UNIPASS National Single Window is far from over, with West Blue Ghana Ltd, an IT solution firm, suing the operators of the system for allegedly pirating its software for the project.

The suit, filed at the Commercial Division of the Accra High Court, is against Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, Customs UNI-PASS International Agency of Korea (CUPIA, Korea) and Word Smart Ltd.

West Blue is seeking an order from the court to restrain the three companies, their directors, agents or anyone acting in their names from using its software as part of the UNIPASS system.

It also wants the court to award damages against the defendants for infringing its copyright by cloning its software without authorisation.

The suit comes barely two months after the Economic Management Team (EMT), headed by the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, directed the suspension of the UNI-PASS port clearing system which was scheduled to commence on January 1, 2019.

In the statement, EMT tasked CUPIA Korea and Ghana Link Network Services to provide a demonstration that they had developed a “full end-to-end Customs Technology Solutions Systems, successfully tested, and provide a comprehensive implementation plant to the EMT by the end of January this year.

    Background

On August 4, 2015, West Blue entered into an agreement with the government to provide a single window government as part of efforts to integrate the systems of the service provider at the country’s ports and facilitate the dazing of goods without voluminous paperwork while reducing transactional time.

The contract was to expire in 2020 after which Wet Blue would hand over the system to the government of Ghana.

However, in March 2018, the Ministry of Trade signed a 10-year sole-sourced contract with Ghana Link Network Service Ltd and its overseas partner, CUPIA Korea Customs Service, to oversee the implementation of the National Single Window Project, including the paperless system, at the ports.

Ghana Link, with its overseas partners CUPIA Korea Customs Service, will provide the trade facilitation and Customs Management System at a 0.75 per cent fee per chair contract with the Ministry of Trade.

This figure is higher than what the existing vendors, West Blue and GCNet are currently receiving as a fee.

West Blue Consulting currently earns 0.28 per cent, while GCNet earns 0.4 per cent. So, the two existing vendors providing single window operations in Ghana together are taking 0.68 per cent which is below what UNIPASS is going to take (0.75 per cent).

  • Venezuela blocks border bridge where aid is set to arrive

The Venezuelan government, led by embattled President Nicolas Maduro, has blocked a bridge connecting Venezuela to Colombia, according to Colombian officials and a CNN photojournalist at the scene.

The move effectively blocks the passage of humanitarian aid called for by Venezuela’s opposition, should it be delivered via this route.

New images show an orange oil tanker and two large blue containers positioned midway across the three-lane Tienditas Bridge, which connects Cucuta, Colombia, with Venezuela.

Read: European nations recognize Guaido as Venezuela’s acting president

Cucuta is one of three collection points for international humanitarian aid called for by Venezuela’s opposition leader and self-declared president Juan Guaido amid Venezuela’s debilitating economic crisis.

Last week, Guaido identified the three collection points: the Brazil-Venezuela border, an as-of-yet unidentified Caribbean island, and Cucuta.

Maduro has rejected the international aid, saying, “We are not beggars.” Juan Caicedo, a spokesperson from Migration Colombia, Colombia’s Ministry of Immigration and Immigration Control, said the Venezuelan military put the blockade into place on Tuesday afternoon, adding that there are cameras monitoring activity on the bridge.

It’s possible the Venezuelan government fears aid crossing the border could be used as cover for an invasion to depose Maduro.

Maduro has faced intense pressure since Guaido declared himself acting president on January 23, invoking a constitutional rule to open a rare challenge to Maduro’s presidency.

Read: Venezuela crisis: US sending aid ‘at Guaidó’s request’

Guaido, a previously largely unknown opposition leader, has been recognized by Australia, Canada, a group of major European nations, a number of Latin American countries and the United States, which have upped sanctions on the country.

Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry has denounced any international support for Guaido, suggesting that European governments were acting as part of a US-led effort to topple Maduro, who has showed no signs of relinquishing power.

On Monday, Canada hosted a meeting of the Lima Group regional bloc to discuss how the international community can further aid the people of Venezuela, including through immediate humanitarian assistance.

Opening a session in Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a contribution of 53 million Canadian dollars ($40.4 million) in aid to Venezuela.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also said Germany had earmarked €5 million ($5.72 million) worth of assistance for Venezuela. Later on Monday, Guaido said Germany had pledged €6 million ($6.86 million.)

USAID has begun packaging pallets of foodstuffs after national security adviser John Bolton’s announcement last week that it would send humanitarian aid.

Guaido called the situation “an emergency … a crisis,” on Monday and said humanitarian aid will begin to flow into Venezuela in the coming days, defying Maduro’s repeated refusal of assistance in the face of food and medicine shortages. He outlined the move as part of a plan to push the military into cooperating with the opposition.

On Wednesday, Guaido once again called on the conscience of Venezuela’s military — which has so far been loyal to the government — to permit aid into the country from neighboring Colombia, which is run by a right-wing government critical of Maduro.

“Brother, let the aid in. Do not stop it,” he said, appealing to members of the country’s armed forces while speaking at a meeting with farmers in Caracas.

“The end of the usurpation will be the end of hunger,” he said, and called on Venezuelans to reject the Maduro government.

  • Commission probing Ayawaso by-election violence a smoke screen Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said the Commission of Inquiry tasked by the presidency to investigate the violence that occurred at the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election is only a ploy to protect perpetrators of the violence.

According to him, the whole idea of the Commission is flawed at birth because the president did not follow the right procedure in setting up such commissions.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the NDC scribe said the constitution states clearly that, a constitutional instrument is to be laid before Parliament before a commission is established saying as far as he is concern nothing of that sort has been done.
Asiedu Nketia argued that such an important committee cannot be established by just issuing a statement.

“I am surprised and even confused, because there is a procedure for the setting up of a Commission of Inquiry, which procedure has not been followed at all. This Commission of Inquiry has been flawed at birth, so I want to believe it is a smoked screen move which the president is using to protect its own appointees,” he told Umaru Sanda on Eyewitness News on Wednesday.

The Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced that government had set up a Commission of Inquiry with the consent of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo who is out of the country to probe circumstances that led to the violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Former Commissioner at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short has been appointed as Chairperson of the Commission while former Dean of the Faculty of Law of GIMPA and private legal practitioner, Mr. Ernest Kofi Abotsi has been appointed as Secretary to the Commission.

Henrietta Mensah Bonsu and Patrick K. Acheampong have also been appointed as members of the Commission.

The setting up of the commission followed the shooting incident that occurred near a La Bawaleshie polling centre that temporarily disrupted the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and resulted in at least 13 persons sustaining injuries.

  • Emmanuel Boateng returns from injury to make squad for Alaves clash

UD Levante forward Emmanuel Boateng is expected to make a swift injury recovery ahead of Monday’s La Liga clash against Deportivo Alaves.

Boateng’s name was conspicuously missing the Frogs 18-man squad for their goalless draw with Getafe last week.

The decision to omit the Ghanaian’s name form the squad list was however not technical, but due to some discomfort in his right knee.

The injury was not the first setback the striker has suffered in the current campaign as he missed Paco Lopez side’s encounter against Real Betis and Celta Vigo.

Tough there is a sense of worry amongst the club’s fans, sources close to the club suggest that he is expected to join his colleagues in training later this week to prepare for the Alaves clash as they aim to upset the hosts at the Mendizorroza.

Boateng has had a somewhat disappointing campaign after hitting just once in 19 appearances in all competitions for the side, unlike last term where he managed to finish the season with 6 goals in 22 games.

Jimmy Cobblah’s outfit suffered a 2-0 defeat in the hands of their Senegalese counterparts in the second group B game in the ongoing continental youth championship.

The Senegalese created the first meaningful chance of the free-flowing encounter when the exciting Ndaw beat his marker for pace and delivers a cross for Youssouph Mamadou Badji who headed past goalkeeper Nurudeen in the 11th-minute mark.

Senegal settled by their one goal cruising started to build from the back to attack with slick moves in the middle of the park to pin the Ghanaians in their own half.

  • STAR Ghana Foundation calls for active citizenship

The STAR Ghana Foundation has called for active citizenship in order to ensure a strong and healthy nation.

Mr Ibrahim-Tanko Amidu, the Acting Executive Director of STAR Ghana Foundation, said active citizenship was the willingness of citizens to stand-up and be part of any action to improve the society.

He said citizens acting individually could not be as effective as when they came together to pursue common objectives.

He said it was important to have effective civil society organisations (CSOs), adding that, CSOs required resources to act, so they needed the kind of philanthropy and grant making that supports CSOs action.

He said for citizens to be active, they need to work in groups, adding that, “we need active CSOs”.

“For us to achieve change it is important to have active citizens,” he reiterated.

Mr Amidu made the appeal in his opening remarks at the STAR Ghana Annual Strategic Learning Event in Accra.

The three-day workshop on the theme: “Lessons for Active Citizenship”, is being attended by over 70 participants.

The Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Responsiveness (STAR) in Ghana programme is a governance and accountability programme, supported by UK Aid, DANIDA and the European Union, and aims at strengthening engagements between civil society organisations and state actors to promote increased transparency and accountability in governance.

The goal is to develop a vibrant, well-informed and assertive civil society, able to contribute to transformational national development for all Ghanaian citizens in an inclusive manner.

Mr Amidu said there was the need for all people to see themselves as part of the process to address issues.

He said extreme partisan politicisation of issues drew a lot of citizens out of the process, adding that, the tagging of civil society as belonging to a particular political party was a way of stiffling their activities.

“Increasingly, we are seeing problems and solutions in terms of which party is proposing or which party is in favour; that is making a lot of people step back,” he said.

“If your child fails his exams, it has nothing to do with NPP (New Patriotic Party) or NDC (National Democratic Congress), it has everything to do with the quality of education,” he said.

“If there is a cholera outbreak, it doesn’t ask for party membership, it attacks people. So we should look at it that way and begin to see how we can support citizens to work together outside of this partisan interest to address our common problems.”

Madam Hamdiya Ismaila, a Member of the Governing Council of STAR Ghana Foundation, said part of their intention for holding the workshop was to showcase the newly launched STAR Ghana Foundation, as a national centre for civil society, active citizenship and philanthropy and inform the deliberations of its new Governing Council.

Madam Taaka Awori, Executive Director of Busara Africa, urged STAR Ghana to redefine what was meant by philanthropy.

“For a long time philanthropy has been defined simply as a worthy person or a worthy organisation or country giving to somebody who has less or a poorer person or country. But what we have started learning is that philanthropy in the African is quite different. It is a lot more of social justice.”

Other speakers at the event included Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, a former Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana.

  • Ignore malicious, slanderous video accusing Ex. Director, staff – EOCO

Anti-corruption agency, Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says people should ignore a video circulating on social media aimed at damaging its Executive Director and staff.

In a statement signed by Jacqueline Avotri, Public Affairs Director of the Office, the Office described the video as “malicious and slanderous.”

The Office said at no time did K.K. Amoah nor any member of staff receive any gifts from the embattled CEO of gold dealership firm, Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah.

“The video is malicious and slanderous with the aim of destroying the image of the Office and the reputation of the Executive Director. The supposed brother (KOD) of Nana Appiah Mensah has no basis for his allegations. We wish to state clearly that statement is totally false,” the statement said.

The statement is in response to a video which has gone viral by one KOD who alleges that EOCO and its head has no moral right to seize the assets of Nana Appiah Mensah aka NAM1.

This was after the Office froze the bank accounts of NAM1 and proceeded to also seize all other assets.

But the EOCO denies this saying neither Mr Amoah nor any member of the staff “has in no time received cash of any denomination, nor mobile phones, nor 4×4 Land Cruisers from Nana Appiah.”

According to EOCO, the freezing of assets belonging to the gold dealership firm and its associated companies has incurred the wrath of beneficiaries of the assets which might have prompted such action.

“The video and its alleged content will not deter the Office from retrieving and preserving the assets owned by Menzgold and its Associate Companies,” it said.

Economic and Organised Crime Office assures the public that it has a duty to perform and would continue to secure the assets of Menzgold and its associated companies in accordance with its mandate as confirmed by the court.
